Chapter thirteen:
Don't Freak
To say Ellie was surprised to see Danny as a (very) nervous Phantom, talking to Valerie's dad, while Jazz was sitting on the couch with her face in her hands was an understatement. The boy's green eyes met hers for a moment before focusing back at the older man. Luckily for her, the conversation seemed to have come to an end because Damon said his goodbyes and left back to his work.
A silence hovered over the room as Danny turned to his family members, who met his gaze.
"This stays between us."
Both the girls nodded.

With that incredibly awkward moment over with. The siblings' attentions went back to the blueprints. With blank papers that Jazz brought with her, they shared ideas on how to modify the portal if they needed.
That along with Damon's help. Danny was now looking at a corkboard with The Fenton Portal Blueprints stuck onto it with added papers messily scattered around. Two distinctive handwriting along the sheets; one was neat, while the other was messily written (but surprisingly legible). The two would hop back and forth on ideas and write them down.
The actions reminded Danny of how his- their parents were. The many times he heard Jack ramble about new inventions and watched his m- Maddie make the blueprints. The building portion would be the job for both of them ninety percent of the time. They always did big projects together. Right? Yeah. Big projects.
Big.. (Danny struggled to keep his eyes open. Everything hurts. His throat was sore. And his father wasn't helping the situation. Not from his point of view. Yet his eyes stayed on his mother, or more like the recorder in her hand. He could pick up only two words from reading her lips. And shivered.)
Danny's lips twitched downwards as the back of his head started to throb in pain.
"Danny," his sister called out. "Are you okay?"
"'M fine." He muttered back. It's best to stop thinking about them for now. "What were you saying again?"
Jazz shot him a a weird look, but continued nevertheless. "I was just saying the spot on where we do this would determine how big this would have to be. And we'll need a power supply, a big one at that. Remember how the third try knocked out the power?"
He nodded. It was blurry, but he remembered that night.. mostly because it took out half the block.
"So, we need a lab or something?"
Jazz stared at him. "It would be easier that way.."
The urge to scoff was forced down. She was right, it would be easier that way. But Danny and labs didn't seem to mix well often. Unless..
No, that would be dumb.
"I'll ask Val about it later." He told her. Danny then blinked and turned his head to look at Jazz, "What time is it?"
"2:30," Jazz replied after looking at the time herself. She had opened her mouth to say something, but her face morphed into horror at a realization. "The kitchen's still a mess!" She called out to Ellie as she hurried out of the living room.
Danny huffed in amusement. An hour. He turned back to the board. He could figure something out in an hour.

Valerie sighed as she opened the door, her conversation with Paulina replaying in her head. She was thoroughly surprised at how much she changed these past years. Even if it was Star's influence or not. It was nice talking to her again. Though she didn't bring up her plan to her. It wasn't the right time to. 'I'll text her later.' She nodded at her thoughts and walked in the apartment.
The first sight she saw was Jazz hunch over on the kitchen counter with Ellie frantically apologizing. And, sheesh, was she glad that Jazz told her what happened ahead of time. She gotta ask how Ellie manages to wreck her kitchen while trying to make simple stuff.. or at least set a camera.
It didn't take long for the two to notice Valerie and greet her with warm and bright smiles.
The least expected was seeing her dad's cork board in the living room with her guest floating in front of it…as Phantom.
She turned to Jazz and Ellie with a raised eyebrow as she pointed to Phantom-Danny. Only to narrow her eyes when she received shrugs back.
With a sigh, she placed her bags on the counter and made her way to the living room. The first thing she noticed was the blueprints on the cork-board. Which explained why Phan- Danny was staring so intensely at it. So, that was one question answered. Second question: was he so focused that he didn't realize she was here?
"You know it's rude to stare, right?" She heard him speak with a very familiar smug tone, but he kept his eyes on the board.
Okay... She can take that as an answer to that question.
"I've heard." She responded blankly, earning an amused huff from the halfa. "What are you doing?"
Ph— Damn it. Danny hummed. "Thought it would be obvious. But I'm trying to figure out if I can modify the portal so we can get all we need before putting it toge—"
"No, I mean," she interrupted, then sighed. "I mean what are you doing as Phantom?"
That made him finally take his attention off the blueprints and turn to look at her. "What? I'm not."
"You are." Valerie said. She dug into her pockets and pulled out a compact mirror, opening it and facing it towards Danny. "See for yourself."
"..oh."
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Lo and behold, to Danny's surprise, when he looked in the mirror he didn't see his normal regular blue eyes, instead, he was met with his glowing green ones.
"Oh." Was all he could muster out.
When did he change (back)? Did he?
Danny tried to show no emotion as he realized. He was so focused on getting things prepared that he forgot to change back after Damon left. Was this why Jazz was looking at him so weirdly? How (Lame. Pathetic. Useless.) embarrassing.
"I didn't realize.." He muttered before raising his voice for her to hear. "Sorry."
Valerie stared at him. "It's okay." Pause. "Are you.. going to change back?"
"Change back," Danny parroted. "I can do that now, can't I.."
As if to check, he looked down at his empty wrists. There were no inhibitors. His neck was still sore from the collar. He was free. So, yes, he could change whenever he wanted now. He can change back.
His eyebrows pressed together.
"Danny?"
Danny couldn't pay attention to the stares, his own being caught at his hands. Only one thought in mind: 'Something's wrong..' Another quickly followed. 'Could he not-?' Danny quickly shook off the thought before it could finish and forced himself to calm down. The inhibitors are gone. He can change back.
Once he was hit by the warmth he was searching for, a ring of light enveloped around him. Danny watched as his rubber gloves seemingly disappeared, but looked in the compact mirror. He was back to regular old Danny Fen- Danny. Just plain old Danny.
He let out a sigh then met Valerie's gaze with a tight smile. "So, how was your day?"
Maybe Phantom deserves a well needed break.
That was a doozy huh? This chapter was honestly not in my plans.. I wrote the summary of the last chapter half asleep and it was my.. downfall. (I actually enjoyed writing it more than what I had planned)
Speaking of Plans, I have finished the "first" chapter Valerie's mini series as well as another one that I have brought up a lot. There's also a lot that I'm working on..
But that's all I have to announce for now.
Hope you all have a wonderful day/night! Remember to eat and hydrate yourselves!
Next up: «So, he gave her a soft smile and said to her in a softer voice than before, "it wasn't your fault."»
(Do you guys like the sneak peeks better than the next chapter summary btw? Let me know)
