"Alright."
The Lion sighed as he walked back over to Rafiki. Being requested to tell everything that he knew was a challenge for him. Scar had confided in him during the first few years of his rule. He was told a great many things about his motives for seizing the throne. But he also forced him never to reveal what he told him.
Even as a young adult, Kanuk had no power to rise up against him. The words the tyrant used against him could break his spirit like the bones the Hyenas would chew on. And it was even worse when…
No, no. One thing at a time.
"Rafiki…" Kanuk sighed. "Before I start, I have to tell you that I had nothing to do with anything that happened."
"I know, my friend." The old Mandrill placed a hand on the Lion's shoulder. "Scar's tragedies are his own, not yours. Rest assured that nobody holds you accountable for what happened during his reign. The order was that no one was to speak to you about what it was like for you."
"Order? But who-"
"Simba, of course." Rafiki smiled. "He knows that just like the Pridelands, you deserve a second chance. He and the Pride are meeting with some of the animals that have fled during Scar's reign and informing them of his defeat. He's already brought back the Impala and Wildebeest. Currently, he and Zazu have ventured to the Theluji mountains to speak with King Sokwe of the Gorilla tribe."
"Gorillas?" Kanuk looked quite shocked at what Rafiki had told him. It was one thing to hear that Simba had commissioned for him to be treated like a guiltless member of the community, but that said king was also conferring with other species such as the Gorillas. "Well that's a new one. I appreciate everything Simba's doing, I really do. And you're right, I should tell you everything about Scar. It's also my way of thanking you."
"Why think nothing of it, my friend." Rafiki patted the Lion on the head.
Kanuk sighed as he slowly closed his eyes. A moment of silence came from this small exchange. The lion needed to collect his thoughts for what he had to say. Oh boy, where to begin?
The truth was: Scar was such a horrible person, there was some trouble as to where to start on talking about his horrible deeds. As a cub, Kanuk came to hate Scar more than any Lion he ever met. And it was even worse when the villain confided in him about his past. And when he didn't tell him anything, it was the Lionesses who told him and vowed to tell no one else.
He sighed as he looked down. "Well... I guess I should see where I should start off at. First off, I suppose everyone in the Pridelands knows how Scar became, well, Scar."
"A fiendish plot." Rafiki spoke with a tone of disgust. "His heart was always full of jealousy and hatred for Mufasa. And it even worsened when he was betrothed to Sarabi. During a hunting party with Sarabi, Scar led Boma, the oldest of Varuga Varuga's herd into their crossfire with the intention of rendering his brother unable to walk again, making him next in line. But Boma had one thing on his mind: a beating to the one who scratched his rear end. Fortunately, Scar's subordinates were there to put a stop to it all. The Lion Guard, if only there still was one today."
Rafiki sighed as he shook his head sadly. Kanuk took notice of this and listened on without a word. "We never heard of what happened to the Lion Guard, only what Scar told us."
"What did he tell you?"
"That a fierce Monitor Lizard had incapacitated him and did away with them. He could only watch as they-"
Laughter. That is what caused Rafiki to stop. Laughter from Kanuk. No, that's not true. He wasn't really laughing. It was more like Chuckling. "Heh, that's funny, Rafiki. He may not have been an upstanding citizen, but Scar was a pretty good jokester. Sorry, Rafiki. I know I shouldn't be laughing here. But the very idea that ANYONE would believe something from Scar's mouth." He then cleared his throat after a moment of silence.
"Lemme tell you what really happened."
The four lions made it to the Outlands at least ten minutes earlier. Chako, the Strongest, was always prepared for a fight. Even if he didn't know how exactly to fight the adversary, being a lion who used his muscles before using his head. Landric could've been there at the drop of a hat, being the fastest lion within 100 miles of African ground. Vistar had eyes good enough to see all the way to Mount Kilimanjaro. And then, there was Rudu.
Whenever you wanted to find the bravest animal on the Savanna, you could always call upon Rudu. Of all lions in the Pridelands, none held the land more to the heart than he. He grew up by the side of the youngest prince of the Royal family and had been his closest friend since they were cubs. He always stood by Scar when he needed comfort. When his parents spent more time with Mufasa, Rudu was always there to listen to Scar's complaints and offer his best advice.
But what advice could he give his best friend after the offer he just gave them?
"Say what?!" Vistar blinked those useful eyes in shock.
"You wanna do WHAT?!" Chako gasped. He may not have been sharp, but he had enough sense to detect something out of the ordinary.
"You can't be serious, Scar!" Landric exclaimed.
"Oh, but I am." Scar said, his eyes narrowed. "You see, every since my mother and father revealed their intention to make Mufasa king, problems had begun to arise in the Pridelands. Have you not noticed that the other animals had begun to speak? How they had begun to whisper? Yes, I know you have. I see it in your eyes. It scares you."
"If you're talking about the incident with Boma," Chako said. "That was basically your fault. You got on the guy's bad side that day, Scar."
"I hate to say it, but Chako's right." Vistar said. "You poke a Buffalo, all you're gonna get is trouble."
"Boma attacked me because he felt like he could," Scar said in a much colder tone. "He believed that since I was not the king, he had the freedom to speak his mind and therefore, he wanted to lash out. Had the four of you not been there, the situation could not have been neutralized. But what did Mufasa do? Nothing. My brother has always been too pacifistic when it comes to problems such as that. But if I were king, I would stamp out any and all resistances, even before they begin."
"IF you were king," Landric said simply. "And we're all fortunate that you are not."
"Careful, Landric," Scar growled at the fastest of the Pridelands. "One may think that you are speaking ill of your future king."
"Scar, what're you talking about?" Vistar asked.
"It is time a new regime for the Pridelands begins," Scar answered in a low voice. "Mufasa has proven to be a weak and inexperienced heir. He has failed to show strength when it comes to serious problems. And the other animals know it. They have begun to lose faith in their golden child. But what they truly need is a king that stands forth and above them."
"That's what dictators do, Scar!" Rudu said, completely against this talk.
Scar glared at his closest friend. "I am giving all four of you a chance. A chance to stand with me. Enforce your kings' laws or be left behind with Mufasa."
The four of them glared at their former leader with a glare they hadn't even given to their worst enemies. For most of their lives, they had defended the Pridelands and the laws of the Circle of Life. And even to their enemies in the outlands, they would show mercy. They once saved the Hyena Queen Zuhour when she was stuck in the raging rapids of a river.
"What happened to you, Scar?" Vistar asked. "You used to be one of the best Lions out there, albeit with a reckless spirit."
"Yeah." Chako nodded. "Even more than me!"
Scar narrowed his eyes at his allies. The only way that this glare he emitted could be any colder would be if his eyes were blue. "That lion woke up. How is it that with those keen eyes, you could not see the greatness of a king?"
Vistar blinked in a confused expression. He had never been insulted when it came to his useful eyes. Rudu noticed this and stepped in. "Listen, Scar. I know that you might feel right now. Boma hit you really hard that day. You felt humiliated, and you felt angry. Don't you remember what Vistar told us that one time? Anger is normal, but temporary."
"Rudu is correct." Vistar agreed. "And I have to butt in, forgive me. But Mufasa is YOUR brother, Scar. How could you even entertain the thought of killing him?"
Scar rolled his eyes at the keenest of sight. "And here I thought you were the smartest one of us, Vistar. The life of the royal family isn't as cut and dry as yours. You may have loved your sister, rest her soul, but that only left a new position for you to inherit, Vistar. With her dead, you have an opportunity, Vistar. You can be your parents' new favorite."
Vistar was usually the calmest and most collected of the Guards. There was hardly a time he had ever shown his temper, even to the enemies the guard fought. It was required for someone with brilliant eyesight to have a clear mind, so they have a clearer path forward. But what Scar said about his late older sister made him so angry, Chako had to hold him back. And it was Vistar who always restrained the Strongest's bad temper.
"Ok OK!" Rudu quickly got between his friends. But that did not stop the burning glare from coming through him by Vistar's furious eyes. "Let's just try and break it up here, shall we? Scar, you need to get your head out of whatever clouds you think you're on and back on earth where it belongs. Think about what you're saying, Scar."
"Oh I am." Scar said. "I've been thinking for a long time. Thinking that I cannot bring this new age about alone. Join me, my friends. Long have you stood by my side defending these lands, ensuring its safety for the royal family. Well I beseech you now. Join me. I call upon all four of you to fulfill your oaths to the land. Bring forth this new age, and you will be highly rewarded. What say you?"
Now Scar was always an ambitious lion. He never took no for an answer. This lion lived up to his name as the fiercest of the Pridelands. And what he wanted was the submissiveness of his four subordinates. He wanted them to stand with him. With their power behind his own, Mufasa would never stand a chance. But what he saw was just the opposite.
Rudu was the first to step forward, glaring Scar in the face. There was only so much that the bravest could try and turn around. But with him, enough was enough. "Scar, we agree that our oaths are to the Pridelands. We have sworn to protect it at all costs. And we will do so from even you. You have become a threat to not only the kingdom but to yourself as well. We are prepared to defend the land from you, and any plan you have for your brother. You are under arrest."
Scar narrowed his eyes coldly at his former best friend. "So that's it then? You're going to take me before the family and tell them what I've revealed to you? I must say I am disappointed, Rudu. In all of you. What about my generous offer?"
"We will die before we betray the Pridelands, Scar," Vistar said coldly.
"Is that so?" Scar questioned. As noticed by a confused Landric, a quiet smile formed on Scar's face.
"Well, if you insist."
And it happened so quickly. A flurry a roars and growls erupted like a chorus of horror. Over a dozen lionesses emerged from behind the rocks and bolted towards the Lion Guard. Their fangs bright and their claws sheathed. It was the kind of expression they used when hunting prey.
Chako was the first they attacked. The first Lioness opened her jaws wide and pounced towards him. His mighty paw swatted her hard, sending her ten feet away. More came against the strongest, but he held his own. He must've beaten at least seven back before he saw the ambush.
Her red eyes were like looking at the eyes of the devil. Insane. Cruel. Evil.
She leapt at his throat as her subordinates advanced on the other three. Landric had attempted to flee with those nimble legs, but he was no match for three stronger lionesses. He could only watch as they knocked him off his paws and approach him, those fangs gleaming with the intent of tasting his blood. He struggled to fight against them, but they claws and fangs ripped into his skin before he could spill their own blood.
Rudu gasped as he watched the fastest be mercilessly slaughtered before his eyes. He did not even wish to see what they were doing to Vistar now that CHako was down. The Bravest knew that bravery was not the same as bravado. He was no use to his friends or the Pridelands dead. And he could let Scar and his Lionesses continue with their plans. More would lose their lives if Scar was put into power. He knew what he had to do.
He rammed a Lioness off of him and sped in the direction of the Pridelands. But another Lioness was waiting in the rocks above, he could see her. Her fangs dripping with Chako's blood. He knew her name well. He watched as she leapt down between him and the Pridelands, with Pride Rock in sight.
"Zira..."
"Oh, so glad you remember my name." Zira said with a malicious grin. "It almost makes me ashamed of what's about to come next."
"I never trusted you, Zira." Rudu panted as he stood his ground. "You spend more time with Scar than you should. He's a bad influence on you and those others back there. Why are they fighting for you two?"
"We made them the same promise we shall make the other Lionesses of the Pride." Zira growled. "No longer shall the huntresses eat after the king and other males. We will hunt solely for ourselves, whenever and whatever we want."
"I knew it." Rudu glared at the lioness. "You're just another version of him. I'm no killer, Zira, but you and Scar plan on tearing down the circle of life. The only way you and Scar are getting to Mufasa is over my dead body."
A devious smile crept over the mouth of the Lioness as her eyes narrowed with sadistic glee.
"Well... if you insist."
That was enough warning Rudu needed to stay on top of his guard. When ZIra made her move, he slashed her across the cheek, sending her to her side. She bit down on his forearm, pulling him down with her. The two of them swatted and slashed at each other, ramming and shoving. Never had a lioness fought like this before. Not against a stronger male.
Rudu sent another mighty blow that sent Zira into the wall. She grunted in pain as blood dripped down her cheek, glaring up at her enemy, who stood above, her. His eyes staring down at her, just daring her to try something else. He raised his paw, just about to strike her when-
WHAM!
The boulder rolled by so quickly, knocking Rudu out of Zira's sight. She got up and heard her enemy yell in pain. Suddenly, a shadow jumped down from the wall where the boulder came from. Scar glared a cold eye at Zira. "Your technique is terrible."
She rolled her eyes at him with a scoff. "You're welcome." But her sarcasm was replaced with fear after a snarl coming from his lips.
He then turned his attention to the lion who was in agony underneath the boulder. Rudu's leg was trapped under the large rock, crushing it completely. His screams were anguished and full of pain. He struggled to remove his leg from underneath the rock, but he was unable to move. And being the lion of opportunity that Scar was, he wasted no time.
"S-scar, please..." Rudu gasped as he watched his former best friend place his paws on the rock. "You wouldn't."
"Watch me." Scar said as he rolled the boulder forward a pace.
Now the entire lower half of Rudu's body was underneath the boulder. The last true-hearted member of the Lion Guard's screams echoed through the Outlands. Scar began to move the boulder forward one more pace, knowing this would be the one to end his friend's life. The one to cut his ties with the past. All hope for redemption within Scar's heart was lost now. Now that he was about to hear Rudu's final words.
"Ade-ADEA!"
Before I bring this chapter to a close, I want to address this one user below who refuses to be named, and only goes by "Guest." It is true, I am in contact with Jacob Lorenzo. I am online friends with him, but I have not heard from him in some time. If you want me to actually talk with you, I need a way to find your Fanfic profile. Just using guest isn't going to work.
Since the roar of the elders doesn't exist in this TLK universe, I needed to find a more realistic way from Scar to wipe out his old Lion Guard. And a little tie-in to the new Scar comic from this summer, in which Scar has the Lionesses hunt for themselves rather than the males of the Pride.
Stay tuned for more!
