Chapter 6: Progress
Three Years After The Nanite Event
Underneath the hospital in Jaku City, two men stood in a lab admiring their work. The first was Doctor Kyudai Garaki, the faithful servant of the man known as the Demon Lord, All For One. The second was the man who had miraculously survived the explosion, known as the 'Nanite Event', of The Compound three years prior. His name was Kleito, one of the leading scientists in the Nanite Program. Since that day, however, due to his injuries, he bore several physical changes. The first was the long scar that stretched from his temple to his jaw as well as the scar that stretched across his nose. The second was his hair. Where before only the tips of his long black hair had been white, now several entire locks had lost their colour, giving almost grey highlights to his hair.
Finally, was his left arm. Even the best healing quirks that All For One had stockpiled could not salvage that degree of damage and so, his left arm was replaced by an entirely mechanical prosthetic. It was bulky and gold in colour, the wrist had two protruding nodes on each side and the forearm and bicep were composed entirely of golden metal tubes. The arm extended up to his shoulder where it was strapped on, and a glowing yellow unit was attached to his chest. Needle-like protrusions resembling claws stuck out from each of his fingers and there was a circular indentation in the middle of his palm.
They watched as another 'volunteer' screamed as he slowly mutated. Upon completion, a collar slammed around the EVO's neck, and it was transported into a tube. Yellow liquid surrounded its form, putting the EVO into an unconscious stasis.
"I must say Kleito, the potential of these nanites never fails to amaze me, their efforts in supercharging our Nomu project have provided fruitful results. Furthermore, they serve an additional use in creating and expanding a private army for All For One," Garaki stared in admiration as another person cycled on the conveyor belt in preparation to be mutated.
"Yes, and the almost endless supply of criminal 'volunteers' you are able to provide never fails to amaze me, Doctor," Kleito smirked as he replied and watched as the man in front of him was mutated and underwent the same process.
The doctor chuckled darkly.
"Well, All For One is the most resourceful, there will never be a shortage of personnel in the underground. My one gripe is that while the nanites themselves are splendid, the primitive mindset of these 'EVOs' that we create from the fodder have a limited directive to destroy only. While we can channel that destruction to a target, they serve no greater purpose than foot soldiers." Garaki rubbed his chin thoughtfully as he prepared yet another subject.
"While I would argue that from a purely destructive purpose, they are more useful as an EVO than they are as a human as they lack weakness and emotion. Although, I will admit my inability to replicate the extensive command functions of the Omega nanite is my greatest failure as a scientist, Doctor. Unfortunately, that expertise died with my former partner Richard Shield." Kleito scowled at the memory of Richard and the explosion that took his left arm.
"Ah yes, the Omega nanite, do you have any clue what could have happened to it? Destroyed in the explosion perhaps?" Garaki looked at Kleito with a mischievous glint in his eye.
"The boy that was originally intended to become Providence…Izuku Midoriya…I am certain that Richard entrusted him with the Omega nanite before his demise." Kleito looked distant as he said this.
"You can be sure he did not perish in the explosion?" Garkai questioned curiously.
"Richard was many things…A fool was not one of them…He would not have triggered that explosion unless he was certain the boy would live and by proxy, the Omega as well," Kleito declared with certainty.
"Interesting…And tracking the boy down has proven difficult I assume?" Garaki raised an eyebrow when he asked this.
"Not at all," replied Kleito abruptly.
This took the doctor aback.
"So why not make a move, surely his capture would boost our results exponentially and further aid All For One's cause?"
"Because, Doctor, if we truly want to help All For One, we won't reveal ourselves to the Omega just yet…No…We will wear him down…"
Garaki looked at Kleito thoughtfully.
"What do you have in mind?"
Kleito smirked.
"My prized invention is finally ready to be unleashed…This will serve as a…Test…for our dear host of the Omega…"
"Your prized invention…You mean…"
The Doctor gasped, and Kleito let out a hearty laugh at his reaction.
"Yes, Doctor…"
Kleito turned a node on his mechanical arm and the indentation in his palm opened fully. From his palm rose a red spherical cloud that slowly grew and formed into a humanoid shape. Its form was a wispy red cloud with slim arms and legs, its face housed two glowing orange eyes and the top of its head was flame shaped. Its entire body had a smoky effect almost as if it were evaporating in the spot, but never decreasing in size.
"Doctor…Meet Alpha."
The doctor stood there astounded, his mouth agape.
"Incredible, a completely self-sustaining form…Is it…generating its own nanites?"
"Correct doctor, even as its nanites deactivate due to not having a physical vessel, Alpha is able to constantly generate an infinite amount of nanites. It is incomplete right now, but will serve the purpose of giving us a sufficient indication of the abilities of Izuku Midoriya and how to best approach his capture."
Adjusting his goggles, Garaki looked on in awe and approval.
"While I would be in favour of a more direct approach, I cannot deny I am undeniably curious to see how this will play out Kleito."
"As am I Doctor" Kleito turned his attention to his creation, "Alpha are you prepared to receive orders?"
A layered echoing voice came from Alpha's face.
"Yes Father…Name your command…I shall execute it…"
"It talks! This is a layer of sentience that we have been unable to achieve from any EVO so far!" Garaki exclaimed in shock.
Kleito gave Alpha its first orders, "Alpha…Seek out the host of the Omega Nanite Izuku Midoriya. Momentarily engage him in combat and then report back here."
"Understood Father…" Alpha nodded as its voice echoed out once more.
With his orders set, Alpha began to levitate before shifting its form into a small cloud and shooting out of the underground lab towards its target. Kleito then went over to his station and activated his fly-sized surveillance drone, its feed broadcast onto the large screen at the back of the lab.
"Now Doctor…Sit back and enjoy the show…"
It was early in the morning and Izuku was currently doing push-ups in his motel room. Over the past three years, he had gotten jobs fixing electronics all across Japan, using his 'abilities' to earn a decent amount of money. With this money, he had been able to hop from motel to motel and live a relatively comfortable life for someone with no family and no memories.
That was not all he was doing, however, as he had been figuring out his new powers.
While there had not been another incident that required him to cure a mutant creature, Izuku discovered that his powers were not simply limited to talking to machines and curing mutants.
They extended far beyond that. Not only could he talk to machines, but he could also build them directly out of his own body parts. This could be done by visualising the microscopic machines that appeared in his mental visions and almost commanding them to construct one of his various builds. Over the course of the past three years, he had listed down all of his current builds in a notebook that read 'Generator Izuku' on the front. This was a special and separate notebook from his other hero notebooks that he used to record the quirks of the heroes that he saw both on T.V and in person.
Finishing his push-ups, Izuku opened up his 'Generator Izuku' notebook and studied his notes once more: -
Build #1: Smack Hands – Large gauntlets that can be formed out of one or both of Izuku's arms. They provide incredible levels of physical strength and can also be extended to a limited length for increased reach.
Note: The Smack Hands have a secondary function. Izuku could control them to spin at extremely high speeds, essentially giving them a drill-like function.
Build #2: Boogie Pack – A jet pack that possesses a pair of large, dark green turbines. Despite the wide and bulky appearance, the Boogie Pack is extremely aerodynamic and can be used for flight and manoeuvrability at high speeds.
Note: The turbines from the Boogie Pack can be launched giving it offensive capabilities. However, this function largely restricts Izuku's movement, and he is only able to hover in place until he disassembles and rebuilds the Boogie Pack.
Build #3: Slam Cannon – A huge dark green cannon that can be built from either of Izuku's arms. The cannon rests on his shoulder in a similar fashion to an RPG. The unique feature of the Slam Cannon is that it does not produce ammo, rather, by using the extendable mouth on the back of the cannon, Izuku can use solid materials such as concrete for ammunition. The material that is loaded is then compressed into a ball and fired with a tremendous degree of force.
Build #4: The Ride – The Ride is a dark green hovering motorbike that is built from Izuku's lower legs to travel at high speeds. As The Ride lacks wheels, it can be used on almost any terrain without limitations. Furthermore, the hover function of The Ride enabled it the capabilities of driving up vertical surfaces and curves with minimal resistance.
Note: The Ride possesses a retractable battering ram at the front that serves a multitude of functions.
Build #5: Villain 'VBs' Busters – The Villain Busters, or VBs, are a pair of huge dark green super boots that amplify Izuku's kicking and jumping power to extreme heights. One stomp from the VBs is strong enough to cause shockwaves and the shins possess a hydraulic piston-like function, allowing the VBs to extend for greater range.
Note: The VBs also possess retractable spikes on the soles. These spikes can be used in order to grip and scale surfaces.
Build #6: Big Fat Sword (B.F.S) – A huge dark green sword that can be built from either of Izuku's arms. Simple.
Note: The B.F.S possesses a lever on the side that, when turned, splits the blade in two and activates a high-speed rotating function, transforming it into a giant circular saw.
Sitting back at the desk Izuku smiled. He had roughly 5 months until the U.A entrance exam where he would finally be able to put his builds into practice and showcase his abilities. The start line for his journey to become a hero.
Snapped out of his thoughts by an alarm, Izuku jumped up and headed to shower. Guess it was time to start his day.
Izuku was walking through the Shizuoka Prefecture, peacefully daydreaming and enjoying the late morning breeze. He didn't have any jobs planned for today, so he was free to search for somewhere to eat and relax. He spotted a stall that served soba and was about to order when a ringing sound entered his ears. Suddenly, the ringing intensified, accompanied by a piercing headache, drowning out the concerned questions of the man running the stall. He gripped his head and rubbed his temples in an effort to soothe the pain, however, it felt as though his senses were being overloaded.
Just as he was about to find a bench to sit down, a red haze shot past him and the ringing stopped, replaced by an intense buzzing sensation in the back of his head. Turning around slowly, Izuku saw a glowing red cloud. The cloud started to form into a humanoid shape and standing before Izuku was Alpha.
"There you are…Brother…" An emotionless layered voice echoed out.
"Brother?" Izuku looked at the being in confusion.
The being shot forward, not giving Izuku a chance to think, and tackled him through the air. Thinking on his feet, Izuku formed a Smack Hand on his right arm and swung, punching it off of him. The being flew back a few feet before stabilising itself and facing Izuku.
"We have much to discuss brother…I am weak…I am incomplete…But you…You are the one…The one that can free me from orders…The one that can make me whole…" Alpha's voice echoed, sending shivers down Izuku's spine.
"I have no idea what you're talking about…But that's not how you ask people for a favour!"
As he exclaimed this, Izuku steeled himself, built his other Smack Hand and charged towards Alpha. He threw a left hook, but it was caught by an enlarged red hand. Quickly, he activated the drill function and he burst free before delivering a strong right hook to Alpha's body, sending it stumbling back.
In an attempt to keep the pressure on, Izuku leapt forward, preparing for another heavy right swing, however, Alpha's arms extended, turning into tentacles and completely restricting his Smack Hand, squeezing until they creaked under the pressure. Izuku cried out and tried to swing his left Smack Hand, but he was met with the same result.
Alpha then lifted Izuku into the air by his arms and its face opened to reveal a mouth full of red tentacles. Izuku struggled in fear as Alpha slowly drew him closer and the tentacles from its mouth shot out wrapping around his body, causing sparks to fly everywhere. His Smack Hands disassembled, and a glowing green circuitry pattern overtook his body. As he cried out, his vision was overtaken by a flash of white. All of a sudden, several images flashed through his mind.
A prison cell...
A man with turquoise eyes and a white lab coat smiling at him...
An explosion...
The images abruptly stopped, and a small explosion went off, separating Izuku and Alpha.
Izuku was blown away and groaned in pain but started to stand up.
Equally, Alpha was sent reeling and held its head in pain.
"We cannot merge…Why…Why can we not merge?" Alpha's voice echoed with a tone of confusion.
Turning its attention to a group of bystanders, its arm shot out, splitting into four tentacles. Once each tentacle made contact, a rapid mutation ensued, and all four civilians transformed into horned, multi-eyed, multi-limbed creatures. Izuku turned and grimaced as the creatures charged at him, preparing to attack.
Looking back to Alpha, he saw that he had vanished and noticed him flying off into the distance. He was momentarily conflicted on whether to stay or chase after Alpha, but Izuku knew what he had to do. Turning back to the mutated people, his mind flashed back to when his powers first activated when faced with the mutant deer. His body was compelling him to do the same thing.
"Here goes nothing..." Izuku muttered to himself as he rushed towards the group of mutants.
Placing his palms on the first one, a glow emitted, and, in a flash, the mutant started to shrivel before his eyes and reverted back into a young woman. Forcing his body past its limits, Izuku formed a Smack Hand on his left, grabbed the second mutant, pulled it close, and cured it instantly, revealing a young man.
Izuku was panting, as fatigue started to set in when a fist made impact with the back of his head, and he stumbled forward. Turning around and gritting his teeth, Izuku charged forward and used his Smack Hand to sweep the mutant's leg, tripping it up and causing it to land on its face. Izuku jumped up and landed on its back, placed a palm on it, and cured it to reveal an elderly man.
The final mutant jumped on his back, wrapping two limbs around his body and two around his neck. Struggling as he was being choked Izuku weakly slapped his palm against the leg of the mutant and with the last of his strength, cured it. A child, around 10 years old started to fall off of Izuku's back. Utilising quick reflexes, he spun around and caught the boy, placing him gently on the ground before his Smack Hand disassembled and he fell to his knees panting.
Taking one last look, he saw that the young man and woman were starting to wake up while the elderly man and child were still unconscious. Smiling in relief, Izuku's vision blurred. As he blacked out, he heard shouts and sirens approaching in the background.
Izuku woke up in an all-white room.
"W-where am I?" His head was spinning, an all too familiar sensation.
"Jail, kid," a gruff voice snapped Izuku out of his stupor.
There sat a man with a brown trench coat. Alongside him was... A small white mouse?
Izuku was sure he had seen the rodent somewhere…but he couldn't remember exactly where…
"Nice to meet you, young man, my name is Nezu, principal of U.A University. This gentleman here is Detective Naomasa Tsukauchi, he will serve as the representative for law enforcement throughout this conversation."
Izuku's jaw dropped at this revelation which caused Nezu to let out a small chuckle. Tsukauchi, on the other hand, remained stone-faced.
"I'm certain you have many questions, such as am I a bear, dog, or mouse? Or perhaps why are you currently restrained in handcuffs?"
Izuku looked down when Nezu asked this last question, noticing for the first time that he was indeed cuffed. In fact not only were his wrists restrained, but so were his ankles.
Nezu continued, "However before we can answer any of your questions, I am going to request that you answer some of ours."
Izuku gulped and nodded, wary of the detective who had still not uttered a single word.
"Firstly, I would like to confirm that your name is indeed Izuku Midoriya?"
"That is correct sir."
"And what is your quirk Mr Midoriya?"
Izuku shifted nervously as he answered, "Um…I'm not exactly sure what to call it, but I can speak to technology and build machines from my body… There are some other things that I'm still working out but those are the main features."
A glint appeared in Nezu's beady eyes.
"Interesting…And what were you doing today, Mr Midoriya?"
"I was out looking for some food when I was attacked by a weird cloud…person…thing…I'm not sure, but it attacked some people and flew off…Are those people ok? I know I cured them but-"
"You may ask questions later Mr Midoriya," Nezu cut him off sharply before resuming his questioning, "Now, are you currently in school?"
"No sir," Izuku answered in a low voice.
"Do you have any family or friends that you can contact?"
"No sir…I've actually been suffering from amnesia for the past few years…I've been living by myself, just doing what I can to get by…"
Nezu turned to Tsukauchi who nodded his head.
"He's telling the truth. My Quirk confirms it."
So, the detective had a lie-detector quirk? Crazy, but very practical given his profession. Izuku fought the urge to ask further questions about how it worked. Mainly because he didn't have his notebook, but also, it was probably not a good time.
"Thank you for your cooperation, Mr Midoriya…Now I believe it is my duty to tell you the bad news."
Izuku froze. Was he going to jail? Wait… He was already in jail!
"Firstly, almost 4 years ago, Inko and Izuku Midoriya were reported dead. The cause of death was a fire breaking out in their apartment. The body of 14-year-old Izuku Midoriya, who was listed as quirkless, was never found."
That revelation almost overloaded Izuku. His mother was dead? It was hard to express emotion as he had no recollection of her…But he had always held out hope that he could possibly have family somewhere, so the confirmation that he was truly alone with no family was still difficult to take. On top of that…Quirkless? He obviously had a quirk…Right?
"Secondly, the reason I am here today. I am aware that this is not your first encounter with not only law enforcement, but also with mutated individuals. I'm sure that 'Jaku City' will be a location that you are familiar with."
The police station he had snuck out of all those years ago…so that was also catching up to him.
"Piecing all of these factors together, I began to do some digging. There was a reported explosion just outside of Jaku City less than a day prior to the appearance of the mutant and your arrest in Jaku City. Now, in a society full of quirks, this could be considered a coincidence, if not for the several mutated animals in the vicinity that bore a striking resemblance to the one you cured on that day and today as well. That is just the beginning. What we uncovered underneath the rubble will truly shock you. We found the remnants of the research of something called the 'Nanite Program'. Granted, the majority of the research was destroyed, and all of the on-site personnel were killed, but we did manage to salvage some key information. Specifically, information on the invention of micro-machines called 'nanites' and biologically mutated subjects labelled as 'Exponentially Variegated Organisms' or 'EVOs' for short. We therefore believe, Mr Midoriya, that you, the EVO in Jaku City, and the entity that attacked you today are all the results of said 'Nanite Program'."
So that's what those small machines he visualised were called. Nanites. Nezu's lengthy explanation started to fill in many gaps. He always had suspicions about his quirk, mainly due to some of its absurd functions, however, he had always just chalked it off to being an extremely versatile technological quirk. This, however, was something completely different.
Nezu's tone became extremely serious as he continued.
"Unfortunately, Mr Midoriya, despite you doing a large amount of good both in Jaku City and today, we cannot excuse the fact that this is your second count of illegal quirk usage in public. Furthermore, your escape from Jaku City police is also another serious criminal offence and there will have to be repercussions."
Izuku lowered his head, accepting his fate.
"But, before we get to that, I would like you to meet some people."
Izuku looked up in shock as four people entered the room.
Standing there were the four people he had cured, smiling at him. The elderly man stepped forward first with a gentle expression and spoke up.
"Young man. I can't thank you enough for today. That experience was well and truly horrifying to say the least, but you saved me. Thanks to you, I can see my grandchildren again."
"Yeah man, that was crazy, I thought I was a goner. Also, sorry for any harm we might have caused ya." This time it was the young man who spoke, and he laughed nervously. The young woman next to him nodded in agreement.
"You're a hero, mister! You're the coolest! My name's Riku by the way!" The young child jumped up and down excitedly as he spoke.
Izuku shed a slight tear and smiled back at them.
"I'm just glad that you're all ok."
Everyone in the room, Nezu and Tsukauchi included, smiled widely at this response. Nodding his head to the four civilians, Tsukauchi gestured for them to leave and escorted them out, leaving Izuku and Nezu in the room alone.
Nezu proceeded to hop onto the desk and his voice shifted to a gentle tone.
"Let me share something with you Mr Midoriya, my very existence was created as a subject of the cruel experiments of man. If anyone can empathise with you, it is I. When I look at you, I see a child with the heart and soul of a hero," he said the last sentence with a tone of conviction that resonated with Izuku.
You have the heart and soul to bring about what I intended for the nanites.
Those words…Heart…Soul… Brought a sense of familiarity.
"That is why, I have a proposition. I would like to offer you an opportunity to partake in the entrance examination for U.A University. As shown by your display today, you evidently have a high level of skill as well, something that we would be honoured to nurture at U.A."
This caused Izuku to perk up. This sounded almost too good to be true! A personal invitation to his dream university. From the principal no less! Maybe his luck was starting to trend upward…
"If you were to accept my offer you would be transported to a secure facility to be held there, free of criminal charges, until the entrance examination at U.A, where you will be a participant and potentially set your life on the path of a hero. If you were to refuse, however, I would be forced to turn your fate over to law enforcement."
"I just have one question, sir," Izuku said.
"Of course, ask away," Nezu gestured for Izuku to speak.
"That thing I fought today…It said that I would make it whole and set it free. Right before it tried to almost eat me. Do you have any idea of what it was?" Izuku couldn't shake the uneasiness that he felt about the encounter. That entity was obviously linked to his past and possibly held many answers about his current abilities and why he was chosen to be the subject of the Nanite Program.
Nezu paused before closing his eyes.
"No, unfortunately, we do not. Aside from the theory that it is linked to the Nanite Program, we have no further knowledge of what that entity could be due to the destruction of the facility. The minds behind the project were evidently brilliant and I am still trying to piece together how they conducted their research. I theorise that exposure to nanites causes the mutation to an EVO, and there is a possibility that your previously quirkless status is what is preventing you from mutating, but we have no concrete evidence."
Izuku nodded and looked down in contemplation It would make sense as to why he was targeted for the Nanite Program. After all, quirkless people were extremely rare in today's society. Whatever they were trying to achieve may have only been possible with a quirkless person.
"As for your offer Nezu sir,"
Izuku looked up with fire in his eyes.
"I accept."
Nezu let out a toothy grin at his response.
When Alpha returned, he was greeted by a smirking Kleito and Dr Garaki
"Well done, Alpha, you successfully executed your mission," Kleito clapped his hands slowly as he congratulated Alpha
"Thank you, father…My only wish is to serve and please you…" Alpha's emotionless voice echoed out.
Kleito stopped clapping and narrowed his eyes at Alpha.
"However…There was one small…Problem…With the execution"
"What would that be father?" For the first time, Alpha's tone shifted to one akin to confusion.
Kleito walked over to Alpha, his smirk gone, replaced by a serious expression.
"You stepped out of line."
As he said this, he jabbed his metal hand into Alpha's chest, the needle-like protrusions sparking as Alpha cried out in pain
"And for that my dear creation…You must be recalibrated…We cannot have you overstepping boundaries now can we? No. That would indeed be rather problematic. Having such a trivial goal such as becoming whole. No. Your goal is whatever I order. You have been created to serve me. You will never be free from my orders. Never forget that." With each word, the sparks intensified until they were flying out wildly across the lab.
Alpha struggled as Kleito forced his claws in deeper. It cried out one last time before starting to glow, violently bulging, expanding, and bursting into a haze of red smoke. The smoke then slowly formed into a sphere which Kleito sucked back into the hole in the palm of his gauntlet. The hole then slammed shut and Kleito stared at the indentation in his palm for several seconds. He then turned back to Garaki who stood there with an unsure look.
"I must say, the level of sentience that it exhibited was worrying Kleito. Alpha developing a mind and goals of its own could give rise to many potential predicaments in future." Garaki concernedly peered at Kleito through the lenses of his goggles as he questioned him.
Kleito flexed his fingers before responding.
"Yes, it is a troublesome mishap, but nothing I cannot handle Doctor. The recalibration has successfully completely reset Alpha's programming. When it is called forth once more, that element of independence will have been completely erased."
Garaki furrowed his brow at Kleito's aloof approach to the situation.
"That seems to be a temporary fix only, Kleito, what if Alpha were to develop that level of sentience on each occasion that it is called forth?"
Kleito brushed off the Doctor's concerns and attempted to reassure him.
"You worry too much Doctor. This is my expertise after all. If anything, the positives should be taken from today's experiment. Not only were we able to ascertain the location and abilities of the Omega, but we were also able to discover flaws that need correcting in the Alpha. As far as I am concerned, this is another huge step for the Nanite Program."
Garaki looked unsure but conceded to Kleito's reasoning.
"Well, I certainly can't argue with that logic. I just hope you fully know what you're doing Kleito. These command nanites seem to be of a completely different magnitude to the standard nanites that we are currently working with."
"Are you suggesting that I am out of my depth?" Kleito growled at the Doctor.
Garaki paused before choosing his words carefully, "Not at all my friend, however, there is no harm in being…Cautious."
"Caution be damned! we are on the brink of a scientific revolution Doctor! We are so close to achieving what could be considered limitless potential…Just a few more carefully calculated steps and every dream will become a reality!"
Garaki chuckled at Kleito's enthusiasm.
"As passionate as ever Kleito. Well then, why don't we get back to 'interviewing' our 'volunteers'."
Kleito let out a hearty laugh at the implications.
"That is what I like to hear Doctor! Bring them in!"
The two then resumed their work as another partially sedated man was brought forward on their conveyor belt. They watched as a small syringe was lowered, injecting the man with nanites, and both grinned as he began to glow and mutate.
