Kolds' Gym Battles

The Kankers and the Kolds entered the Rustboro Gym. Once inside, the Kankers looked around. They saw bleachers on one side of the gym and a battle arena with large rocks on it in the middle of it.

"So, this is a gym, huh?" asked Lee.

"Yes, it is." said a female voice. The Kankers and Kolds turned to see a girl with brown hair with two pigtails tied with a red bow, wearing a gray, uniform skirt, a white undershirt, pink tights, and a pair of black shoes.

"Who are you?" asked Marie.

"I'm Roxanne, the Rustboro Gym leader." replied the girl, now identified as Roxanne. "Are any of you here to challenge me to a gym battle?"

"Yes. We all are." replied Burt.

"Very well." replied Roxanne. "So, which one of you will be challenging me first?" Bret stepped forward.

"I'll take you on first." said Bret, stepping forward.

"Very well." said Roxanne. She turned towards the Kankers, Bart, and Burt. "The rest of you can watch from the bleachers if you want."

"Sure." said Bart. Roxanne and Bret walked to the arena while the rest of the Kolds and the Kankers walked to the bleachers and sat down. As Bart was sitting down next to Lee, he accidently puts a hand on one of Lee's hands. He quickly pulls his hand away and he and Lee look away, blushing. As Bret and Roxanne stood on opposite ends of the arena, two boys were setting up a video camera outside the arena. Bret notices it.

"Hey, what's with the camera?" asked Bret.

"Well, you see, besides being a gym leader, I also teach beginning trainers at the Trainer School here in Rustboro City." said Roxanne. "I show the gym battles to my students so they can learn more about them. I hope you don't mind."

"Sure, I don't mind." replied Bret. Burt Kold turned towards the Kankers.

"This is an excellent opportunity for you three to learn how gym battles work too." said Burt. "Maybe even learn more about Pokemon."

"I guess." replied Marie. Back at the arena, another boy walks to the side of the arena.

"This will be an official gym battle between Roxanne, the gym leader, and Bret Kold, the challenger." said the boy who was acting as referee. "Each side will use two Pokemon. The battle will end when one trainer's Pokemon are unable to battle. Let the battle begin." Roxanne and Bret each pull out a pokeball.

"Geodude, go!" said Roxanne, throwing a pokeball and releasing what appeared to be a gray rock with eyes, mouth, and arms. Lee points the pokedex at the Pokemon.

"Geodude, the Rock Pokemon. When Geodude sleeps deeply, it buries itself halfway into the ground. It will not awaken even if hikers step on it unwittingly. In the morning, this Pokémon rolls downhill in search of food." said the pokedex.

"Let's go, Chinchou!" said Bret, throwing a pokeball that had a blue top with a red 'V' in the middle of it with three yellow vertical lines (Lure Ball), releasing a round, blue, fishlike Pokemon with large yellow eyes, and a pair of antennas with yellow teardrop-shaped orbs at the end of them. Lee points the pokedex at the Pokemon.

"Chinchou, the Angler Pokemon. Chinchou's two antennas are filled with cells that generate strong electricity. This Pokémon's cells create so much electrical power, it even makes itself tingle slightly." said the pokedex.

"Okay, Geodude, use Rollout!" said Roxanne. Geodude begins rolling towards Chinchou and rams it, knocking it back.

"Chinchou, use Water Gun!" said Bret. Chinchou shoots a stream of water from its mouth, and it hits Geodude, dealing super effective damage to it.

"That looked like it hurt." said May.

"Yes. Water type moves are strong against rock Pokemon." replied Burt.

"Are there any other moves that are strong against rock Pokemon?" asked Marie.

"Yes. Grass, ground, fighting, and steel type moves are also strong against rock Pokemon." replied Burt. Marie looks at Burt with a dreamy look on her face.

'He's so smart.' Marie thinks to herself before shaking her head. "Are there moves that aren't strong against rock Pokemon?"

"Yes. Normal, Fire, Flying, and Poison aren't effective against them." replied Burt. Marie then returns her attention to the gym battle.

"Geodude, use Rollout again!" said Roxanne. Geodude rolls towards Chinchou again and rams it harder than it did the first time it used Rollout, knocking Chinchou to the ground. Geodude begins rolling in place.

"Rollout gets stronger after every time it's used." said Burt.

"Bubble!" said Bret. Chinchou releases bubbles from its mouth and they hit Geodude, dealing super effective damage. Geodude begins to roll a little slower.

"Bubble has a chance of decreasing the speed of the Pokemon it hits." said Burt.

"So Geodude's slower now?" asked Marie.

"Precisely." said Burt.

"Water Gun!" said Bret. Chinchou sprays water out of its mouth, and it hits Geodude, dealing super effective damage. Geodude falls to the ground with swirly eyes.

"Geodude is unable to battle. Chinchou is the winner." said the referee.

"Way to go, Chinchou." said Bret. May stands up and begins cheering out loud, getting Bret's attention. May realizes what she was doing and sits back down, looking down at her feet, blushing. Bret smiles in response. Roxanne returns Geodude to its pokeball.

"You did great, Geodude." said Roxanne. She puts Geodude's pokeball away and pulls out another one. "Nosepass, go!" She throws a pokeball and releases a blue, rocklike Pokemon that looked like an Eastern Island statue with a red nose.

"What is that?" asked Lee as she points the pokedex at the Pokemon.

"Nosepass, the Compass Pokemon. Nosepass had been said to be completely unmoving, with its magnetic nose pointed due north. However, close observation has revealed that the Pokémon actually moves by a little over 3/8 of an inch every year." said the pokedex.

"Nosepass, Rock Throw!" said Roxanne. Nosepass slams itself onto the arena, making rocks fly out of it and they hit Chinchou, damaging it.

"Chinchou, Water Gun!" said Bret. Chinchou shoots a stream of water out of its mouth, and it hits Nosepass, dealing super effective damage to it.

"Use Tackle!" said Roxanne. Nosepass flies at Chinchou and rams it, knocking it to the ground, unconscious.

"Chinchou is unable to battle. Nosepass is the winner." said the referee.

"Great job, Nosepass." said Roxanne. May glares at Roxanne. Bret returns Chinchou to its Lure Ball.

"You did great out there, Chinchou." said Bret. He puts Chinchou's Lure Ball away and pulls out a regular pokeball. "Bayleef, let's go!" He throws the pokeball and releases a quadrupedal, pale yellow Pokemon with a long neck, a large leaf on its forehead, and curled up leaves sticking out from around its neck. Lee points the pokedex at the Pokemon.

"Bayleef, the Leaf Pokemon and the evolved form of Chikorita. Bayleef's neck is ringed by curled-up leaves. Inside each tubular leaf is a small shoot of a tree. The fragrance of this shoot makes people peppy." said the pokedex.

"Looks like Bret's Chikorita evolved." said May.

"Bayleef, Growl!" said Bret. Bayleef emits a loud cry, releasing soundwaves from its mouth and onto Nosepass, weakening its attack strength.

"Nosepass, Rock Throw!" said Roxanne. Nosepass slams onto the arena floor, making rocks fly out and onto Bayleef, but not doing much damage due to Nosepass' attack power being weakened.

"Bayleef, Razor Leaf!" said Bret. Bayleef swings its leaf and releases green leaves from it towards Nosepass.

"Harden!" said Roxanne. Nosepass glows white and its body shines before Razor Leaf hits it, dealing super effective damage to it, but Nosepass was still standing. "Now use Tackle!" Nosepass flies towards Bayleef and rams it, but not doing much damage.

"Use Razor Leaf!" said Bret. Bayleef releases more leaves from its leaf, and they hit Nosepass, dealing super effective damage to it.

"Rock Throw!" said Roxanne. Nosepass slams itself onto the arena floor and makes rocks fly out of it and they hit Bayleef, but not doing much damage to it.

"Razor Leaf!" said Bret. Bayleef swings its leaf and releases leaves from them, and they hit Nosepass, dealing super effective damage. Nosepass stood there for several seconds until it falls backwards and hits the arena floor.

"Nosepass is unable to battle. Bayleef is the winner. The winner of this gym battle is the challenger, Bret Kold." said the referee.

"Way to go, Bayleef!" said Bret.

"Bay!" cheered Bayleef. May jumps up and down, clapping and cheering until she suddenly stops and looks away, blushing. Roxanne returns Nosepass to its pokeball.

"You were great, Nosepass." said Roxanne. She puts Nosepass' pokeball away and walks to Bret. "That was an excellent battle, Bret. I'm sure my students will learn a lot from it." She reaches into her pocket and pulls a rectangular badge out of it. "As proof of your victory here, I reward you with the Stone Badge." She gives Bret the badge, along with pokedollars. The Kankers look at the money with looks of interest.

"I guess you win money in gym battles, too." said Lee.

"Indeed." said Burt.

"Now I'm looking forward to my gym battle." said Marie.

"Me too." said May. Roxanne walks to the Kankers, Burt, and Bart.

"Which one of you will be facing me next?" asked Roxanne. Burt stands up.

"I shall battle you next." said Burt.

"Very well. Once I get my Pokemon treated at the Pokemon Center, we will have our battle when we return." said Roxanne.

"I look forward in providing information for your students." said Burt. Roxanne smiles in response and walks out the gym.

"I'm going to get my Pokemon treated too." said Bret and he runs off. Burt steps out of the bleachers and stands on one end of the battle arena to wait for Roxanne to return for their gym battle. Soon, Bret and Roxanne return from the Pokemon Center. Bret joins the others in the bleachers and sits next to May; Roxanne walks over to the side of the arena she battled from before.

"I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long." said Roxanne.

"I'm good." said Burt.

"Let us begin, shall we?" says Roxanne. The referee steps to the center of the arena.

"This will be an official gym battle between Roxanne, the gym leader, and Burt Kold, the challenger." said the referee. "Each side will use two Pokemon. The battle will end when one trainer's Pokemon are unable to battle. Let the battle begin." Roxanne and Burt each pull out a pokeball. Roxanne throws hers, releasing her Geodude; Burt throws his, releasing a small, tan, mushroom-like Pokemon with green spots on it. Marie takes the pokedex from Lee and points it at the Pokemon.

"Shroomish, the Mushroom Pokemon. If Shroomish senses danger, it shakes its body and scatters spores from the top of its head. This Pokémon's spores are so toxic, they make trees and weeds wilt." said the Rotom Phone.

"Geodude, use Rollout!" said Roxanne. Geodude rolls at Burt's Shroomish and slams into it, making spores come out of its body, and waft into Geodude's face. All of a sudden, the Geodude gets drowsy and soon falls asleep.

"Hey. What's with that Geodude? Is it sleeping on the job?" asked Lee.

"My Shroomish has the Effect Spore ability." said Burt. "If he's hit with a move requiring physical contact, there's a chance that the attacking Pokemon will be poisoned, paralyzed, or in this case, fall asleep."

"Wow." said Marie. "Burt is so clever."

"Shroomish, get some of your stamina back with Absorb!" said Burt. A green stream of energy comes out of the top of Shroomish's head and hits Geodude, doing super effective damage, as well as healing the damage he took from the Rollout attack a few seconds ago.

"Geodude, wake up!" said Roxanne in an attempt to wake Geodude from his sleep; but it didn't work.

"Shroomish, finish this with Tackle!" said Burt. Shroomish jumps at Geodude and slams into it, and even though it didn't do a lot of damage, it was still enough to knock it out.

"Geodude is unable to battle. Shroomish is the winner." said the referee.

"Way to go, Shroomish!" said Burt.

"Great job, Burtie!" said Marie.

"Burtie?" replied Lee. Marie blushes as she realized what she just said. Burt blushes as well.

"I meant, uh, Burt!" said Marie with a blush still on her face. Roxanne returns her Geodude to its pokeball.

"You did your best, Geodude." said Roxanne. She puts Geodude's pokeball away and pulls out her last one. She throws it, releasing her Nosepass.

"Get that Nosepass, Burt!" said Bart from the stands.

"Shroomish, use Stun Spore!" said Burt. Shroomish releases yellow spores from his body which drift over to Nosepass and covers it, making it shudder as it's inflicted with paralysis.

"Nosepass, use Rock Tomb!" said Roxanne. Nosepass manages to fight through paralysis and drops a bunch of rocks onto Shroomish, pinning it to the floor, and reducing his speed.

"Shroomish, use Mega Drain!" said Burt. A larger stream of green energy than the one from the Absorb attack comes out of Shroomish's body and hits Nosepass, doing more super effective damage than from Absorb, and heals Shroomish completely. Roxanne looked a little nervous.

"Hurry, Nosepass; use Rock Throw!" said Roxanne. Nosepass drops a bunch of rocks onto Shroomish, damaging it.

"Shroomish, use one more Mega Drain!" said Burt. Shroomish hits Nosepass with another Mega Drain, this time knocking it out.

"Nosepass is unable to battle. Shroomish is the winner. That means the winner of the battle is the challenger, Burt Kold." said the referee.

"Good work, Shroomish!" said Burt. Shroomish turns towards Burt and nods.

"Way to go, Burt!" cheered May. Burt looks at her and gives her a thumbs up, making her blush. Roxanne returns her Nosepass to its pokeball.

"You did your best, Nosepass." said Roxanne. She puts Nosepass's pokeball away and walks over to Burt. "You trained your Shroomish well."

"Yeah, I know." said Burt. Roxanne hands Burt a Stone Badge, along with some pokedollars. She then looks over at Bart.

"I will return for our gym battle after I get my Pokemon treated." said Roxanne.

"Okay, I'll wait." said Bart. She and Burt leave the gym and head for the Pokemon Center while Bart sits in the challenger side of the arena and waits for Roxanne to return.

"How do you think Bart will do, Lee?" asked May.

"Who knows?" replied Lee. Half an hour later, Burt and Roxanne return. Burt joins the Kankers, and his cousins in the bleachers, while Roxanne goes to the side of the field opposite from Bart.

"Are you ready for your gym battle?" asked Roxanne.

"I've been ready since I got here." said Bart.

"Then I won't keep you waiting anymore." said Roxanne. The referee steps to the center of the arena.

"This will be an official gym battle between Roxanne, the gym leader, and Bart Kold, the challenger." said the referee. "Each side will use two Pokemon. The battle will end when one trainer's Pokemon are unable to battle. Let the battle begin." Bart and Roxanne each pull out a pokeball, and throw them, releasing Roxanne's Geodude, and a small, quadraped, with a shiny, metal-plated body with eyeholes on its face plating, revealing blue eyes, some holes on its back along with a protrusion sticking out of it, and a dark gray underbelly from Bart's.

"What's Bart's Pokemon?" asked Marie. Lee pulls out the pokedex, and points it towards Bart's Pokemon.

"Aron, the Iron Armor Pokemon. Aron has a body of steel. With one all-out charge, this Pokémon can demolish even a heavy dump truck. The destroyed dump truck then becomes a handy meal for the Pokémon." said the pokedex.

"Sounds tough." said Lee. Back at the battle, Geodude and Aron were staring each other done.

"Aron, use Mud-Slap!" said Bart. Aron flings some mud at Geodude, and hits it in the face, doing super effective damage, and reducing its accuracy.

"Geodude, use Rollout!" said Roxanne. Geodude rolls at Aron, but unfortunately, thanks to the lowered accuracy from Aron's Mud-Slap, it misses.

"Aron, use Metal Claw!" said Bart. Aron swings one of its feet at Geodude, and hits its face, doing super effective damage. A surge of energy rises up from Aron.

"What's with that Aron?" asked Marie.

"Metal Claw has a chance of increasing the attack power of the Pokemon that uses it." explained Burt. Back at the battle, Geodude was struggling to stay afloat.

"Geodude, use Tackle!" said Roxanne. Geodude leaps towards Aron, and manages to hit it, but not doing a lot of damage.

"That Tackle didn't look like it did a lot." said Lee.

"Aron is part steel type, and part rock type; normal type moves won't do much damage to him." said Burt.

"Aron, use your Tackle!" said Bart. Aron runs at Geodude, and slams into it, and even though it didn't do much damage, it was still enough to knock it out, thanks in part to the power up from Metal Claw.

"Geodude is unable to battle. Aron is the winner." said the referee.

"Yes! Way to go, Bart!" said Lee. Bart looks over at Lee and smirks, making her blush a little. Roxanne returns her Geodude to its pokeball.

"You did your best, Geodude." said Roxanne. She then pulls out her last pokeball, and throws it, releasing her Nosepass. "Nosepass, use Tackle!" Nosepass floats quickly at Aron and slams into it, not doing a lot of damage.

"Aron, use Metal Claw again!" said Bart. Aron strikes Nosepass with another Metal Claw attack, doing super effective damage. Roxanne was starting to look nervous.

"Nosepass, use Rock Throw!" said Roxanne. Nosepass summons up a bunch of rocks, and launches them at Aron, not doing a lot of damage.

"Rock type moves don't do much against steel types." said Burt.

"It's time to end this." said Bart. "Use Mud-Slap!" Aron flings more mud at Nosepass, hitting it, doing super effective damage, and knocking it out.

"Nosepass is unable to battle. Aron is the winner. Which means the winner of the match is the challenger, Bart Kold." said the referee.

"Yes! We did it, Aron!" said Bart. Aron runs to Bart, leaps into his arms, and starts nuzzling his chest, making him chuckle.

"I wish I was in Bart's arms, nuzzling his chest." said Lee. Realizing she said that out loud, she looks to see his sisters, Burt and Bret Kold giving her looks. She blushes and looks up at the ceiling. Back on the arena floor, Roxanne returns her Nosepass to its pokeball.

"You battled bravely, Nosepass." said Roxanne. She puts Nosepass's pokeball away and walks over to Bart. "Your Aron is quite strong, Bart."

"I know." said Bart as he rubs Aron's head. Roxanne pulls out a Stone Badge from her pocket.

"As proof of your victory, I present you with this Stone Badge." said Roxanne as she hands Bart the Stone Badge, along with some pokedollars.

"Thanks." said Bart. Roxanne and Bart head for the Pokemon Center to get their Pokemon treated. Meanwhile, the Kankers were talking with Bret and Burt Kold.

"So, where are you guys gonna go now?" asked Lee.

"There's another gym on Dewford Island." said Bret.

"We're gonna challenge it for our next badges." said Burt.

"Well, now we know where the next gym is after this one." said Marie.

"So, that's where we'll go next." said May.

"We're gonna head to the Pokemon Center, and wait for Bart to get his Pokemon treated." said Bret.

"Okay." said May. Bret and Burt exit the gym to go to the Pokemon Center, leaving the Kankers to themselves.

"So, who's battling Roxanne first?" asked Marie.

"I wanna!" shouts May, resulting in a punch in the face from Lee.

"Then get down there and wait!" said Lee. May punches Lee on the shoulder and heads down to the arena floor. The Kolds have won their Stone Badges from Roxanne. How will the Kankers fare in their gym battles? Wait and find out.
