Chapter 1 Sloughed, and Far
"You never walk alone. Even the devil is the lord of flies." – A Loving Father
"Never give up! No matter what. That was the true choice that I was supposed to make. Naruto, you are the child of prophecy. I'm sure of it now. I leave the rest to you." -Jiraiya, The Toad Sennin,
He felt horrible. But how could he not?
He cried. But how could he not?
He felt their despair. But how could he not?
How,
Could,
He,
Not?
If his ward Kurama still lingered he was sure the fox's more negative side of abilities would shine brightly.
But alas, he was here, lost, and alone. Without anyone. Hell, he didn't even know how the fuck to get back. You may be wondering. how had he ended up in this predicament? Naruto Uzumaki, that is, the Child of Prophecy.
It turned out Black Zetsu didn't spend the many millennium just plotting after all. He had techniques honed to far beyond perfection and posed an even greater challenge for them to face with the combination attacks he could pull off with his mother.
But who the fuck taught him Fuinjutsu? His clan's main roster of abilities were thrown around left and right by the damn thing? Creature? Spectacle? Who the fuck knew what Black Zetsu was.
But he had chakra, and he knew how to use it, that much was plainly obvious. His thousands of years of time spent improving his mastery of the art held much power over them. From sealing each and every attack they could think of, to sealing them. From Sakura to Kakashi.
Naruto was bound to be subjected to the same technique, which counteracted against his own seal present on his body, sending them tunneling through a rip in existence itself, showcasing just how retarded Fuinjutsu in itself, was, and why you should never clash the two powers.
And by them, he meant all.
The rip wasn't small. And ended up swallowing the entire dimension, and everything linked to it. Including his home world.
At the time, he still held dominance with negative sensing energies, and he had never felt so much death.
Absolute carnage, ranging from the oldest civilians, to the youngest baby.
All of his friends, his people, his village, home.
There was nothing left.
He had nothing left to fight for, much less anything left to live for.
Everything he had done up until this point, what was it all for? His entire life amounted too... nothing? If he could still cry, he probably would have.
But that well dried up a hour ago.
It was too overwhelming to take. It just seemed impossible, just not real, was this really his future? His friend's future?
They deserved none of it.
His hand patting down on the dirt slowly and gently, placing the last rock, with the names of each and every single comrade he could possibly remember. Ending with Sasuke Uchiha.
He could never forget them. He never would.
They would forever live on in his heart.
Why was it that he was the only one that survived the ordeal? Only him. Alone. All over again.
And wherever he was it was pretty clear this was another dimension entirely.
He found out that much from the natural energies of this dimension. They felt nothing like his own, yet familiar in a way, like a lost cousin. Mostly due to the fact the Natural energy held little to no chakra at all, if you could call it that.
With the awakening of the Sage of Six Paths chakra's within himself he gained an extremely deep understanding of Chakra, to the point he was sure he could control any element with it.
There was no use to this revelation, he felt. It did nothing to bring his friends back.
Naruto felt hesitation to even continue. If a Kunai could pierce his skin he might've done it right there and then.
And yet he walked.
T.L.S
The last Uzumaki wasn't sure where he walked. But he arrived upon a civilization shortly. It was 'Loud'.
If this was even a day ago, he would've probably jumped in surprise at the tall and unfamiliar buildings, the extreme amount of noise the city had produced as well. He hadn't felt this numb since he were a kid. As if his emotions were stripped from him.
As though someone physically gripped it, and tore it asunder.
He was all too familiar with this feeling. Having felt it everyday for all of twelve years of his life. Some days even after.
But to this state? He couldn't remember, he didn't want to.
He just wanted his friends.
More then that he wanted to die. To see them, and be with them all over again.
Though he knew without a doubt there was nothing that could kill him, not even himself.
The Child of Prophecy had his healing factor bolstered far too many times. He could even survive biting his own tongue off. He was definitely sure he would die from decapitation though, but who could do it?
Everyone here felt extraordinarily weak. Zero chakra at all even, but they were another dimensions humans, so there was that explanation. Even a villager would seem like a hulk to these guys.
He hadn't a will to do anything. And so he walked.
Because what else was there to do.
Naruto could only imagine his friends calling out to him to keep going forward. And that's the only reason he did. Even if they were uneasy, hesitant steps.
Not that anyone could tell, being far less observant than even average villagers.
It seemed as though time slowed down as he moved among them. He had garnered a lot of attention at first for his wear, the folk took him as some type of 'Dragon Ball Z' cosplayer, whatever that meant, and people lost interest in him in mere minutes.
It became apparent to him that the population held zero external or internal abilities, judging from the lack of energy sources within their own bodies, and over abuse of technology.
The whiskered teenhadn't walked past a single person with a average build, or in their case, probably lean with muscles and the not. They were mostly skinny, out of shape, or simply just fat.
This detail told him that this world was at some sort of peace? Perhaps? Or at least the place he was at.
The urge to run around and marvel at the many new sights was heavily outweighed by grief and pain within his heart. The only benefits he saw being the use of his national language in the area.
Pulling a signless Henge for his clothes to take the appearance of what seemed normal in the populace, he strutted around to find something to do. Or more like, what should he do?
Taking a moment to think he knew he at least needed money and a place to stay, he had seen many billboards with the word 'Kuoh' on it, with other diversities added onto of course, like Kuoh's Best Beef Restaurant, that obviously showed that wherever he was, it was this Kuoh.
Coming up with plans of what to do next and dealing with extreme loss weren't a good combination but he saw he had no choice. He knew he needed more time to grieve.
If there was one thing Naruto was best at was bottling emotions. Hell, he even created a entirely different person inside of himself due to that.
Still, why him? Why was he the only one left? Brought to a peaceful world... Was this some cruel reward for his efforts? He couldn't even feel happy about surviving the destruction of everything he knew.
The blonde was brought out his more sensitive thoughts by the smell of something familiar. 'Ramen?' He was pretty sure he could pinpoint the location too, a perk of having permanently enhanced senses due to his past Jinchuriki role.
His walking sped up, getting to the destination nearly a mile away in a minute. He wasn't moving too fast, but he moved fast.
Seeing the ramen shop brought a flicker of light back to the blondes eye. At least there was something here like at home.
He quickly sat down and ordered a few bowls of miso, confused of how he couldn't read the menu's. How could they have the same language yet different writing?
T.L.S
Naruto ate the entire store out. To the point of it needing to be closed four hours earlier. Normally he'd eat a couple bowls to feel content, but he couldn't stop.
While ate with his eyes closed, imaging himself sitting at Ichiraku, speaking with Teuchi and his daughter, he wasn't shy to say a few tears had dropped at the ready, but it was the only thing that made him feel at home again.
And it honestly felt good.
Well, up until the owner started screaming insults and the not for not having the money to pay, even going as far as to attempt to call whatever authorities they had, quickly snatching the phone, he ushered for the owner to relax, which he did not, reasonably so, mostly because Naruto had worn out the entire cooking team, himself included, and not paid for a single thing.
They eventually reached the conclusion of him working there until he could pay off anything, for free. And while Naruto could quite easily displace himself from this situation, he didn't feel the need to ruin this peaceful town's peace, especially to a popular restaurant.
Shit, peace was all he wanted anyways, no need to start problems with the authorities and become a potential criminal.
What was the harm when a clone would most likely be working in his stead.
T.L.S
He eventually secured a place to stay, that being through the use of genjutsu and the not. Now by all means Naruto wasn't a expert in genjutsu by any means, it required injecting your chakra into another's chakra flow and controlling their... thought process? Or something, he couldn't really remember.
With the humans from this dimension not having a chakra flow to control though, he quite literally manipulated them like puppets, they didn't even have a chakra system to fight back against it with.
The blonde vowed not to abuse or even use this ability again though, the blonde only needed a place to lay his head for a couple months until he got ready to leave, and gathered money of his own of course.
Though his boss grilled him about going to school, which he declined, multiple times at that. That is until the police got involved. That was a problem he didn't want at all, but not really, he didn't really care. But it did give him something to do. Other than work at a nonpaying job, oh and did he forget to mention his second job?
He was sort of a junior construction worker. They needed the numbers, he could do the lifting. At night he worked with building houses with multiple teams of people, and while they mainly relied on fancy devices and 'cranes' as he was told, he did most of the work with his hands and a hammer, something they all wondered how he did, chalking it up to just not seeing it due to the time of day they worked, but in the evening, he worked at the trusty noodle shop.
Dedicating the rest of his time to continue his training, not wanting to spend even a moment thinking of the past, even though it still heavily affected him. This left him with a good four hours of sleep, more than enough for a man of his profession, or, old profession at least.
This lead him to where he was today, three months later. And yes, this happened over the span of that time. Obviously.
Naruto's first day of school, or more like, the first day he would show up.
He could never bring himself to truly try to jump back into any type of normal lifestyle. Only reason for showing up? Failing a bet with one of his co-workers.
They knew he worked there, and he knew they were somewhat friendly to him. Leading to a neutral, somewhat nice relationship. Naruto couldn't really bring himself to befriend them, not yet at least.
The pain of losing every single friend he'd ever had was still very much present on his mind.
Becoming a recluse.
And he was all too fine with it, no one tended to bother him, he bothered no one.
He took to studying up on the worlds history in some of his free time, becoming interested in the progress of this world, disappointed as well, mostly with the wars.
The death rate was unfathomable, in the wars, and it seemed crime was somewhat around too, judging from the news he saw from time to time.
It was nothing compared to feeling every living thing die on a planet, but it didn't change the facts.
This also explained why the world was so angry, its natural energy a far more negative version than his own.
Looking over himself in the bathroom mirror of his poor apartment complex he nodded with what he saw, donning the school's uniform as it was made to be worn, taking hold of his newly purchased orange headphones, he slipped them on before pulling out his iPhone, he needed some music to play, switching through different music playlists he saw on Spotify.
Now it wasn't that he was shy of people or anything, he simply wanted them to ignore his existence as he much would them, he hadn't been around anyone his age in a while sans customers, and could do without them commenting on his hair every two seconds.
Seeing the time he was definitely late, probably by twenty or so minutes. That didn't matter.
Walking out the door he sighed, already missing his only comfort zone. Naruto wouldn't say he was depressed, but he was more then sad. And he doubted he would ever feel full again, the hole that incident tore in his heart was far too big to fill.
With the use of chakra far enhancing his normal capabilities he took a leap that sent him spiraling out the hallway window landing onto the rooftops, taking this method of getting to his destination.
T.L.S
"You're 30 minutes late!"
Yeah, he spent the last 10 minutes waiting outside the door, no doubt enjoying the last few minutes enjoying his freedom.
"Sorry." Most of the other students were unnerved by how dead the voice sounded, reminding them of one of their own classmates. He took that chance to glance around the room to make it at least seem like he was interested in the class.
"Sorry? That doesn't excuse anything! Much less explain you're being not present the last couple weeks either!" The teacher as obviously fuming, probably having a bad day. That much he could tell from what little negative emotions he could sense.
If Kurama were here though, he'd be able to sense the man's emotions down to a T, to the point of almost able to read his mind. Sorta. Naruto had originally gained the ability from the chakra mode provided by the Nine-tailed beast, taking a hit with his disappearance into the tear caused by those two dumbass Otsutsukis.
He felt at his best in talking shit about them.
They definitely deserved it.
"I have... problems at home." The blonde said, a complete lie, though he said it as vague as possible in hopes of the teacher assuming he truly did and took pity on him. And it worked.
Always did, even on Iruka, cracking an unnoticeable slight smirk at the prank. This was nostalgic at least. Reminders of his life back at home. He took note of everything that resembled anything, including moments like these. It would become a habit to prank this guy, whatever his name was.
The next ten minutes of class were spent organizing groups for some project, he hadn't cared to listen. Basking in the feeling of everyone seemingly not wanting to speak to him.
"He's probably some kind of delinquent!"
"Shhh! Don't let him hear you!"
This was due to his blonde hair, it seemed. Most in this area called him that for that simple reason. He hadn't felt the need to confront them for this although, just civilian gossip. He almost frowned at the reminder he was a civilian now too.
Just walking amongst them was difficult. Back in his world, everyone learned to walk silently initially, almost like it was built into them, even the heaviest footsteps made the lightest noises.
Here? It almost sounded like five ninjas tussling in a room with the way they moved, especially their running. He had grown used to it rather quickly though, the ninja's ability to adapt coming into full play.
Back onto topic though, this group stuff, seemed there was two people to a team, and they were drawling animals that resembled how they felt explaining their feelings on the matter, then showing it to their partner who then wrote what they thought about the comparison.
This was his first day though, so how could this possibly be something he could even do? Unless he got to know someone here and now. A false friend if you asked him. Glancing around to see mostly everyone had partnered up he looked at his options.
There was a black haired girl, with black eyes and glasses, looked pretty normal and stuttered a lot from what he could see. Now he would've gotten up and probably gone right to her, to ask for her aid on the work given to them, there was already another guy making his way there.
A heavy blush on his face, Naruto was most definitely not going to ruin this little thing the guy had going on by butting in. He already felt what that was like once before, even if it was mostly one-sided, a dry chuckle escaping his mouth at the thought.
Next was a guy who wore clothes all too tight and worn a fuck ton' of make-up, now don't get him wrong, he had nothing wrong with the ones who liked those of the same sex, he just wasn't going to put himself in front of that potential danger when he obviously wanted a piece of him, judging from all the winks and kisses blown. 'Yeah... no.'
Last was probably what looked to be the youngest girl in the room, basking in the glow of the sun from the window, merely sitting and minding her business. He thought she was the most interesting. Reason being she had a small well of chakra.
Her white hair reminded him distinctly of his late Senseis'. You didn't see many with it after all, especially from what he'd seen in the area.
The fact that her eyes kept darting to him every five seconds had nothing to do with it. Or maybe it did. It wasn't everyday that a girl even showed that she even wanted to look at him other than for talking shit and saying something along the lines of 'Yakuza', or 'Delinquent.'
Even here it was nothing special, especially because he found his whiskers bothered most of this dimension's females, taking them as tattoo's, and another sign of his made-up role of a yakuza.
So maybe he did at least try to reach out to someone, even if that was moping around in a bar to find something to relieve his stress with. What? He learned something from Jiraiya, other than throwing rasengans around all day. Though blonde didn't get very far before getting kicked out due to some weird age requirement.
Now that never existed in his world. You just became an adult as soon as you picked up a headband.
Taking a minute before giving a annoyed sigh at the yell of his teacher to move faster, he stood before moving his desk and chair over to the younger girl. "Yo." Now that was dry, he could've did better than that.
"Yo." Ok, so she was just as dry as him.
"Partners?"
"Sure."
He inwardly cringed at himself, he didn't even feel like himself, but he knew these feelings holding him back would blow over soon. "So, whaddya' wanna draw?" The teen tried to say it in the most friendly way he could. She merely frowned at him, as slight as it was, time around Sasuke and Gaara would making you damned good at being able to tell.
"Names first." Oh, oh yeah. He kind of forgot. He never really went out of his way to talk to people anymore. God, was he becoming Sasuke?! This attitude was most definitely not acceptable, "Yeah yeah my fault, not really thinkin' y'know?" He had to fix this.
Thumbing a fist at himself, "My name's Naruto Uzumaki and I'm going to be the-" Yeah, no Hokage. Old habits die hard huh? "Manager of the store I work for?" He finished mainly as a question to himself, it was something he thought of on the spot.
A blatant and obvious lie, one that it seemed she could tell it was, judging from the tilt of her head and frown. "No you're not." What? How would she know that? "How would you know that?"
She gave him a confused look, "I go there often." What? A customer? He was a goddamn ninja, he was pretty damn sure he'd notice if he'd seen her multiple times. Perhaps he let his guard down far too much during his time in this peaceful town.
But why was he talking to her so much? He hadn't spoken this much words nor showed this much of his self to anyone, this highly unnerved him, then he felt it.
It was as though their chakra's were connecting and feeding off of each others presence, as though they coddled and wrapped around each other. "What the hell're you doing to me?" He said in a hushed whisper, "I don't know, it just happened."
Little did he know she held similar thoughts to him, why did she feel the need to do this? Why did it feel terrible when his bright and warm chakra displayed the hurt of a man who had been through far too much. More importantly why did it feel as though his chakra was trying to embrace her very being? How could one hold so much chakra in the first place? It was like a vast ocean, partly why she was so intrigued with his appearance in the first place.
She held no fear, it was hard too with such a lovely energy around her, except when it was obvious the person who held it was going through something horrible it seemed. It reminded her of herself, and how she needed the same treatment before Rias stepped into her life.
"I'm sorry if it bothered you, Naru, my names Koneko Toujou." She quickly covered her mouth feeling the same surprise the whiskered teen had, she had said more then she intended too, that being the little nickname she had thought of in her head. What could you even call this spectacle occurring, a fusion of chakra? Acceptance? She'd go with that, maybe this acceptance of the two's chakra exposed more of their inward selves to each other, and honestly, she had never felt this much happiness before, not since she was a child.
Though there was a distinct feel of sadness wrapped underneath and she could feel that it was what was eating at the boy. "Just don't do it again." He said, to him it felt like damn near a violation of his privacy, she brought out more in him then he even wanted too, but then again she said she didn't know, so why was she even apologizing?
And why did he feel like a dick seeing the hurt in her eyes? "Look, I'm sorry if I'm coming off as rude or somethin' right now. I'm just dealing with a lot of shit right now." Had anyone been paying attention to the debacle they would've been shocked at the emotional conversation between the two, and majorly confused. Luckily, the classroom was too loud for them to even be heard.
Koneko then gave him the most cute look he'd ever seen. Even cuter then Sakura, "I forgive you. But I don't want to stop." He'd admit, it wasn't the worst feeling, it actually made him feel more at peace then he had the last three months. "It's fine. Lets just do the project." He just didn't like his feelings being forcefully brought out, especially when that was something he felt was a violation.
Naruto would let it slide cuz' she was cute, and for that reason only.
T.L.S
They basked in the feeling of each others chakra being caressed as they worked, taking it in with nothing but silence between the two, a peaceful one though.
She drew a bird, it looked like she drew it straight out of a goddamn movie or something, the girl was definitely talented, he drew a Nine-tailed creature, with a blonde stickman on top, upon seeing the others drawling they both were interested in what made the other articulate what it was they felt.
If his ears weren't as sharp as they were, he would've missed her chuckle at his project, "Hey, it ain't that bad y'know." He wasn't that confident in his drawling skills, but he was sure they weren't that bad. "Pfft." Her smiling proved that she didn't agree with that assessment.
"So how does a bird explain you?" He had to ask, the teacher never said they couldn't after all, quirking a eyebrow at her, "Free." Free? So she felt free at the moment huh? He thought she would make cat or something, meh. He gave her a shrug before writing it down on the separate paper given to them,
The white-haired teen held up his beautiful masterpiece, "So you're a fox yokai?" A fox who now? "Wha-?" He asked incomplete confusion. Naruto had never even heard the word before.
"You smell strongly of foxes, usage of chakra, its quite obvious."
Wait, she could smell Kurama on him? How? It had been months since his death, "Well I'm gonna say no, I'm just as human as the next guy, my buddy Kurama just used to be inside of me." Wait, wait wait, that sounded too fuckin horrible, "Hold up now, I meant sealed, like sealed inside of me.
Judging from the shock that crossed her face he could tell just where her mind had went with that statement. "Used too?" His grimace told her all she needed to know, "I'm sorry."
"No, it's fine, I've bitched about it for ninety-one days straight, they would've wanted me to move on by now." He gave her another look, "So what's a Yokai?" She gave him the same look he gave her, "You don't know of Yokai?" She then felt as though she made a big mistake, "So you don't know of the supernatural?"
Naruto definitely knew of the supernatural, hell he fought many demons already, ranging from tangling with Mōryō to defeating the Nine-tailed demon himself. "Of course I do, demons and all that." He saw her body tense up and then relax with this revelation.
"So how can a human use chakra? Much less the amount you have..." So she knew how much chakra he had, or at least knew that he had a huge amount of it, "I'm somewhat from a different dimension, everyone had chakra there." Koneko took notice of the use of the word 'had'.
Giving a nod she accepted his answer, everyone in the supernatural at least heard of other dimensions, from certain spells to books written in history. "You can use chakra, what're you? Yokai?" He wasn't about to rule out him being the only non-Yokai capable of wielding chakra.
The neko raised her hand issuing him to wait before they continued their conversation, before she released it and paid him more attention, "I cast an illusion." To them, they would appear as if they were just working along.
He nodded feeling as much, it was kind of crazy seeing someone that wasn't the average human, after months of seeing nothing but the norm, but there was no way in hell he was the only one with any type of power here. He wasn't that naive for a second. "I'm a Devil."
Now that was something he didn't expect, at all actually. Was devil some type of high tier demon? or low tier judging from how she wasn't even near Mōryō in terms of power, or was it the generalization of the race? He'd find out in time.
"Cool." That comment only came because of the bat-like wings that sprung out of her back.
They then quickly vanished upon realizing where she was. She had quickly lost herself in the moment, it was to the point where everyone had exited class. In-fact, lunch period had just started, even the teacher had left.
It seemed her partner realized the same and quickly made himself scarce, without so much as a goodbye. She frowned at that realization, before her face turned a burning pink.
She actually held a conversation with a boy she was interested in. She hadn't had a conversation with well, anyone!
Now let it be known deep down she was actually just like any other girl, there were boys she was intrigued with in the past, it had just never worked for her, everytime she said more than three things they were immediately disinterested, saying she was boring.
Every single time.
She couldn't help it that she was, she thought it was just something that she had to accept and no one was truly interested in her for anything other than her body, and she didn't even have much of that.
Yet he came over to her, not anyone else, but her, she even watched him look at everyone else before turning to her, and actually appearing interested in what she had to say, not if she wanted to come over and have some 'fun'.
The look in his eye was unmistakable, even if it was hidden behind pain and unease. He was interested.
And that was all the go she needed to at least try.
She could almost squeal to express the amount of joy she felt. But she heard people walking by and had to save face. It wouldn't do for her, to attract literally everyone in the school's attention because she felt a emotion. They seemed to think she was emotionless.
It was something she had tried many times, in her own way, to fix. It turns out the trauma from her past left permanent scars that wouldn't heal though, it still posed no problem for the boy to notice if she frowned or smiled, even laughed.
That was all Koneko ever wanted. For someone to notice. Not Akeno, not even Rias.
No one could blame her if she decided she wanted the new boy, right? She had never wanted much of anything before, but this? Sweets couldn't compare. Maybe.
T.L.S
It was a long day. From working jobs to going to school. Frankly? He was looking forward to it. He had been so out of place in life because of the past, with good reason, and felt nothing. Laying in his bed it felt as though he was working toward nothing. He had no goals. He was just moving, just doing. But now he felt even at least a little different.
He thought he'd made a false friend but maybe... maybe a new friend. Or something else entirely. It wouldn't do to even think that far ahead, but when there was nothing else to think about, it was hard not to.
She understood, he had no clue if it had to do with the bonding between their chakras, which it most likely did actually, never mind. But the feeling of someone actually understanding, someone to talk to, even if it was just a simple "Hello."
Was better than the hell that was loneliness. He had tuned out and allowed himself to shrink back into his cage of guilt, allowed it to twist and turn him from the person he truly was. He could never be the same, no, the loss hurt too much, it did something to him.
But that wasn't to say he couldn't be healed. It felt like he felt better than he had in his entire life in that moment. He hoped it wasn't just hormonal teenage urges pushing this forward, no, it wasn't he couldn't even think like that about this.
It was better to just accept and stop second guessing, yes, discard this shell that he let himself shrink into, to never give up and keep moving. That was who made Naruto... Naruto.
He sat up, eyes wide, He had given up.
Tears rushed to his eyes, 'Guys..!' He promised them he never would.
Yet he did, he given up and shut himself off from the world, cut himself off from the world, contemplated ending his own existence, the existence they fought so hard to protect.
The entire reason he was here... was because of them. And he sat here and took it all for granted and bitched about it.
'I'm sorry guys... My closest friends!' The tears held back from all the pain he let bottle up broke the emotional barriers he put up like a dam. They all gave it up for him, just for him to almost give it up for them.
He let them flow this time. For them. One last time. For every single one of them. He'd live.
