In a world full of heroes and villains, there is one group of people constantly ostracized for something they can't control. Being quirkless. Around two percent of the population is quirkless and they are treated like trash. I am one of those people. Or, at least, I was but more on that later. I'm Izuku. No surname, I hate it.
When I was four years old, the doctor told me to give up on my dream because I couldn't be a hero if I was quirkless. After that, my family treated me differently. My sister would bully me with the people I used to call friends. My parents acted as if I never even existed after they learned about me.
My life was a living hell. There's only a few people in the world that I actually care for and that's the ones who took me in after I ran away at seven years old, Ryuko Tatsuma and Rumi Usagiyama. They've been so nice to me, taken care of me, treated me as if I was their own child. Neither of them officially adopted me but they treat me like a son.
Since then, I've been happy. I went to a new school. I didn't make any friends but at least they don't beat me for wanting to be a hero. When I go home, I watch the news and see if there's anything on about Ryukyu or Mirko.
When my twelfth birthday came around, I felt different. Like something was wrong. I told Ryuko about it and she had me stay in bed and she took off work just to take care of me. The whole day, I was unbearably itchy, like something was trying to break through my skin.
After a few hours, Ryuko's friend, Rumi, came over to check and see how I was doing. She was just as nice as Ryuko but also more… intense. She has been helping me train for years and she doesn't sherk on the training one bit.
When she came over, she saw me and immediately became worried. Eventually, when I got up, Ryuko and Rumi both stayed by my side to make sure nothing bad happened. As I was walking to the kitchen, a sharp, stabbing pain shot through my skin. Every inch. I closed my eyes as I screamed in pain.
When it stopped, I was panting and out of energy as I noticed that Ryuko and Rumi both had worried expressions but also shocked faces. I also felt a lot heavier. I was confused until I looked down and saw it. My whole body was covered in scales. I had grown a tail, wings and horns. My hands and feet had also changed and were replaced by shard claws, the only thing left was my face. My face was the only part that, for the most part, didn't grow any scales. My teeth and eyes had also changed.
I no longer had my normal, green eyes. They were changed to draconian slits like Ryuko. My teeth had also been altered and became pointed. When I saw this, I immediately knew that I had gotten my quirk.
That was six years ago. I had learned that with that change came an alteration to my body as well. I was stronger, faster, and I could see from a great distance perfectly. My sense of smell and hearing also increased. I could hear someone whisper from the opposite side of the house. Which, by the way, was huge. It took a lot of training but I managed to tell the differences between scents and could track them.
Right now, I'm in class as the teacher is having us fill out career forms. I know exactly what I want to do. I want to be a hero like Ryuko and Rumi. I want to help everyone and bring a smile to those who need it most. When I turned in my paper, the teacher gave me a weird look but I ignored it. I walk back to my desk, the claws on my feet clacking against the tile floor since I can't wear shoes anymore. They'd just get torn to pieces by my claws.
When everyone was done, the teacher gave us the rest of the period off. I sat in my chair, writing in my notebook about different ideas about my quirk until class ended. On my way home, I saw a store that had tv's showing the news. Looking at one, I saw some sort of slime villain had a hold of a few hostages. Curious, I continued watching and saw a familiar looking explosion from the slime.
It was then that I realized he had a hold of Izumi, Katsumi and Katsuki. I may hate them but they don't deserve to die like this. Hoping that someone will come and rescue them, I noticed a familiar shadow flying over the scene on the tv. "Ryukyu!"
She landed in her dragon form in front of the slime and grabbed a hold of everyone trapped in the slime. When the slime refused to let go, she began to breathe fire on him. When she was done, he was steaming and unmoving. She had knocked him unconscious.
After that, I headed home and relaxed on the couch. Seeing Ryuko breathe fire is always the coolest thing. "Hmm, maybe I should cook dinner for when Ryuko gets home. Yeah. I'll make her her favorite."
I got up and prepared everything I'll need to make her steak. After everything was prepped and seasoned, I went to the grill and began to cook. By the time I was done, Ryuko had walked in the door and looked tired. "Ugh, so many villain attacks today. Izuku, are you here?"
"Yeah, I'm here. I'm just finishing dinner for you since I figured that you were tired from all the fighting and saving you do. Head to the table and I'll bring it out to you."
She did and I set her plate in front of her. "Oh, steak, medium rare, just the way I like it." She took a bite out of it and smiled. "Mmm, it's so good."
"So, I saw your rescue with the slime villain."
"Oh? How did you see that? You should still have still been on your walk home."
"I passed a tv shop that was showing the news. I also saw that… the people you rescued were my old tormentors. I also saw some heroes standing around doing nothing. I hope you told them off."
She put her fork down and gave a serious look. "You know Izuku, you're going to have to face them eventually. It will most likely be at UA. If you don't want to see them at the entrance exam, I can always give you my recommendation."
"I know but… I want to prove to myself that I can get in with the skill you and Rumi taught me. If I meet them there, they will most likely not recognize me."
"Remember what I told you. Forgiveness is hard but hold onto anger is harder. Please give them a chance to redeem themselves. That's all I ask."
"*sigh okay Ryuko. I'll give them a chance. How were they?"
"They seemed thankful to have been saved. Most of them anyways. That Bakugou boy is a real short fuse. Any little thing sets him off. He kept shouting about how I didn't save him and he didn't need help in the first place, how he had everything under control. I can see why you didn't like him very much."
"Heh, yeah. Wh-what about Izumi?"
"She seemed… lost. Like she was missing something. I think she regrets what she did to you, Izuku."
I looked down and began to think. 'Could she really be sorry about what she did?'
After Ryuko finished her dinner, we sat on the couch and watched some old game shows for the rest of the night. Later on, Rumi arrived since she had moved in with us so she could train me better but I think she just wants to be closer to me and Ryuko and I know Ryuko has a thing for her so she had no problem with it.
Since school was out, I had plenty of time to train for the entrance exam to UA and make sure both my body and skills were up to the task. Thankfully, Ryuko let me come to her agency to work out and train with her everyday and when she was busy on patrol or doing paperwork, I would train by myself.
Rumi wanted me to come to her agency as well but since there was no one else there, if a villain attacked while she was out, I could get hurt so I always went with Ryuko. Rumi would sometimes visit and help me train but that was rare since she was usually pretty busy.
When the entrance exam was almost here, I took a look at my progress and saw that I had grown quite a lot of muscle. I have also grown in height, standing at 6'4" tall. My scales act as armor and are almost impenetrable. My claws are razor sharp and I have to wear special gloves over them so I don't cut everything I touch.
I was confident that I could do it with this. I just wanted to prove I can to them. "You're taking the day off today, Izuku." I looked over and saw Ryuko in the doorway.
"Oh, okay. Are you sure?"
"Yes. Tomorrow is the exam. You need your body to be well rested if you wish to perform at your best. You want to impress, right?"
"Heh, alright. You know, I can't thank you enough for everything you've done for me, Ryuko."
"I only did what I thought was right. I saw a child living on the streets with nowhere else to go and helped him. It's what a hero does." She smiled at me. "So, are you gonna wear that mask you were talking about?"
"Yeah. I don't want them recognizing me just yet. I want to wait for school to start."
"Okay, it's your choice. Just be careful."
"Don't worry. My scales are as tough as ever!" I gave her a toothy smile.
"Hmhm, good." She looked at the time and looked upset. "Late."
"What?"
"Rumi is late. She said she was gonna take me out for dinner but she's late."
"Maybe there was a big villain attack." I suggested.
"If there was one, I will personally fly down there and tear them apart." I saw her eyes glow a bit.
Right after that, the door shot open and Rumi came running in. "Ryuko, I'm so sorry I'm late. I had to deal with this stupid villain on my way home."
"Did you make him pay for making you late?" She asked, eyes still glowing.
"Oh, he won't be walking for a while." Ryuko gave a small smile at that. "Come on, we don't want to be late to our reservation."
Ryuko got up and got her things. "Remember Izuku, take the day off. No training."
"Yes ma'am. You have my word."
She smiled and nodded. "Okay. I'll see you later Izuku."
"Okay, bye, have fun!" I said as they left. "…mom." I whispered once the door was closed.
——
The rest of the day I spent looking through hero news or writing in my hero notebooks. Not much really happened.
When Ryuko and Rumi came home, they were both blushing but smiling. They came and sat down on the couch next to each other. "So the date went well?" I said in a teasing tone.
"I-it wasn't a date!" Ryuko said.
"Rigggght. Whatever you say~." I said with a sly smirk. She ignores me and we watch tv the rest of the night.
