It didn't seem fair that things should be going so well in one area of Jonathan's life and so badly in another. Well, not badly. A man who founded a company worth nearly a trillion dollars could not ever claim that business was going badly. But Jonathan Hart Industries was going through a slightly rough patch at the moment. The trip to London had been a good one, all things considered, but the effect on the company was not all that was anticipated. There were multiple sectors of the company that were thriving and unfortunately many more that were starting to stagnate. The benefit of a huge company like this was that Jonathan could see to a number of different industries that all could benefit each other. The drawback was that the resources needed to be allocated in a very delicate balance. For years, that balance had been struck. Things were starting to look a little shaky right now. But while all that was going on at the office, Jonathan had more joy and happiness at home than he could have ever dreamed.
Jennifer. Beautiful, brilliant Jennifer. She was so perfect, and Jonathan had to pinch himself at the thought of her sometimes. Even now, staring at her, he could hardly believe she was real. The soft angles of her cheek, the dusting of freckles on her skin, the gentle flutter of her slightly red eyelashes as she slept entirely barefaced. Her auburn hair was a little frizzy from moving around in her sleep—and probably from the more active activities before they fell asleep last night. It almost didn't make sense that this wonderful woman had fallen as in love with him as he had with her. It was even more implausible that she was lying here in bed beside him in the early hours of the morning, engaged to marry him.
She made a little noise in her sleep and stirred. He watched as she rolled onto her back and stretched. The sheet came down to reveal more gorgeous freckled skin, bare from Jonathan's eager attentions just a few hours before.
Her eyes eventually opened and sought his out. "You're awake already," she said in a slightly hoarse voice.
"Yeah," he answered simply. "I like getting to wake up first." He didn't need to tell her that he had barely slept with the way his mind had been racing about work. And once dawn came, he was able to see her while she slept, and watching her calmed him down.
"Why do you like getting to wake up first?" she asked, gazing up at him curiously.
"Because you're usually awake before me, and I like watching you sleep." As the words came out of his mouth, Jonathan realized that might be a creepy thing to say. He tried to explain himself. "You're beautiful when you sleep. No makeup, hair all loose, perfectly at rest. Beautiful."
The way Jennifer's eyes sparkled with her bright smile at his words let him know he'd not missed the mark there. In fact, she rolled over and pushed him onto his back and started kissing him deeply.
Perfect way to start the morning.
Eventually, they decided to actually start the day. The sun was much higher in the sky and the smell of breakfast started wafting into the bedroom. Jennifer sat up and pushed her hair out of her face. "What time do you have to go into the office today?" she asked, still a little breathless.
Jonathan smirked, excited by the surprise he had planned for her. "I'm not going into the office today," he said simply.
She whipped around to look at him, clearly delighted. "Really?!"
He had felt bad for bringing her to LA and then spending every single one of the last six days working. After all, he'd been to London on business and the adventures with Jennifer were not really on the agenda. He had come back to Los Angeles as a man head over heels in love but with a job to do still. So now he wanted to take more time with her when he could. He could manage one day away.
He grabbed her by the waist and pulled her back down onto the bed. He was rewarded by a little yelp and a giggle. Jonathan buried his face in her neck. God, he loved her neck.
"I'm going to turn off the email notifications on my phone and delete the Zoom app so no one can message me. Whatever happens today can wait until tomorrow. Today is just for you and me. And I've got a surprise for you," he murmured against her skin. Taking the day off of work was one of the surprises, but not the one that he really wanted to give her.
She gasped when he sucked hard on her pulse point, but managed to recover just enough to say, "I love surprises."
Jonathan grinned. He had a feeling she would love this surprise.
