Six months have passed. The wedding will take place today. My parents wanted something big and expensive and I had to beg them to keep it simple, with close friends and family only. Heiji is my best man and Sonoko is Ran's maid of honor. This day is going to be perfect.
Of course, the only thing that could make it even more perfect would be the bride's father to be here with us. But what can I do? He's been refusing to see Ran or take her phone calls. Sonoko tried to knock at his door to calm him down and came back with Ran's clothes in a garbage bag. Agasa was also unsuccessful. Eri Kisaki didn't even try. Even Yoko Okino sent him a message to tell him she would sing at our wedding and she would like him to attend, too. He didn't even bother to answer.
Ran pretends that she doesn't care but I know she does. She cried every day for a week after he turned her back to her. I even suggested cancelling the wedding so he would start talking to her again but she refused. She says he will eventually change his mind. And today is the day. Our very special day. Let's try to make the best of it.
The room is ready, big and light, with flowers everywhere. The guests are chatting before the ceremony. I'm hiding in a corner, phoning the Detective Boys and pretending to be Conan. They sound so happy to hear me.
"Ran is getting married today!" Ayumi says. "I'm the flower girl!"
"I'm the ring bearer!" Genta says.
"I'll read a text in front of everyone!" Mitsuhiko says.
"I saw Ran in her wedding dress!" Ayumi says. "She looks like a fairy tale princess!"
Yeah, I know, she looks perfect all the time.
"She marries that young detective," Genta says. "You know, the one who looks a little like you."
"Yeah, but you're so much smarter than him," Mitsuhiko says.
Thanks, Mitsu. I'm not sure how I feel about this.
"We miss you and we miss Ai, too," Ayumi says. "Did you hear of her lately?"
"I had her on the phone yesterday," I say into my bow tie.
"Well, I'll send you both a ton of photos!"
"Pity you can't be on the pictures with us!" Genta says.
Actually, we will and they'll never know. I hang up, I walk to Pr. Agasa and I drop Conan's bow tie into his pocket when no one is looking. Later, he'll give it to Shiho so she can phone our friends and pretend to be Haibara during the dinner party. I can't believe our three tiny friends are eleven now. They grow up so fast.
People start sitting down. Heiji walks to me and asks if I'm nervous. I shrug.
"I'm ok, I guess. I don't know why, I have the feeling something will go wrong."
"There are several brilliant detectives and several black belts here. What could go wrong, Conan?"
"What did you call him?" someone asks.
He stutters that he pronounced Kudo wrong. The ceremony starts eventually. I have butterflies in my stomach. The fluttering intensifies when I see Ran walk down the aisle in her white dress, alone. Ayumi was wrong, she doesn't look like a princess. She's an angel.
Then there's a wild shout:
"STOP THIS NOW!"
Everyone turns their head. It's Kogoro, wearing his best tux and looking angry. Yoko stops singing and everyone freezes except the bride who runs to him angrily.
"Dad, what are you doing here?!"
"What are YOU doing here?!"
"I'm getting married, remember? I sent you an invitation!"
"Yeah, I know, now take my arm!"
"You won't make me leave, dad. I'm getting married, whether you like it or not!"
"Yeah, I know, you stubborn kid! Now take my arm! I cannot walk you down the aisle if you don't take my arm!"
She stares at him.
"Are you drunk?!"
"Ran, take my arm now, I'm not joking! I still think you're making a terrible mistake by choosing that jerk but I'm not a deadbeat dad and I'll walk you down the aisle if it kills me! Now come!"
She takes his arm, stunned, and smiles embarrassedly. He practically drags her to the officiant while people are trying hard not to laugh. I think Yoko Okino never sang that badly before: she's trying too hard to suppress her laughter to put a decent performance. Kogoro eventually stops in front of the officiant, puts a kiss onto Ran's forehead, stares at her with misty eyes and says something that sounds like: "you look beautiful in this dress". Then he sits down while glaring at me. Before the ceremony starts, he manages to whisper to me:
"I you ever make my precious daughter cry again, I will kill you and no one will ever find the corpse!"
That's how I married the love of my life.
The end!
