Luke was closing the Diner slowly. He kept waiting to hear from Lorelai or hoping she would walk in the door. He was waiting to hear how her talk with Chris went. He knew it would be hard on her, but selfishly he was excited to finally have Christopher Hayden out of Lorelai's life as much as possible considering he was Rory's Dad. From what Lorelai told him, Rory and Emily were supportive of her cutting all ties with Chris and that the two of them were almost as furious about this lie as he was. He wanted to have food and coffee ready for her, but the later it got the more he realized she would likely not want to eat. So he closed up and was going to head up to his apartment, waiting for her call. Before heading up he grabbed the bags of garbage to put out in the dumpsters. He stuffed three bags into his packed dumpster and grunted when he realized there was no room for the other two.

"Ah, crap," he sighed as he stepped out from under the alley's overhang. He was almost instantly soaked from the downpour of rain. He started a light jog across the street to Doose's when suddenly he noticed headlights coming towards him quickly. He squinted to try to recognize the car as he picked up his pace. The car screeched while taking a turn too quickly. Luke threw his bags in Taylor's dumpster and began to run back to the diner. The rain was pouring down so hard, it was loud against the road and sidewalks, Luke jumped at the loud crack of thunder.

Miss Patty rushed to the studio door, she had gathered a few people who were walking around the Town Square when the rain began. She stopped her class and began an impromptu party. People were talking and laughing as the music played. But when the wind shifted Patty went to close the door completely so the rain wouldn't come in, but what she saw caused her to scream.

It was eleven pm and Lorelai had locked the door behind Chris, changed the sheets on her bed while she cried to mourn the loss of a lifelong friend. She washed her face, and decided to go to Luke's instead of calling him to come to her. She quickly threw on her tight jeans (that he loved), her 'Porn Star" t-shirt that always made him roll his eyes and grabbed her Yale hoodie on her way out the door. When she reached her porch and she saw the rain, she sighed and went back in to find her raincoat. Just as she came back into the house the phone began to ring.

"Hello?" She answered on her way to the closet. "Hey Patty!"

Lorelai's Jeep sped into the hospital parking lot. She got soaked running from her parking spot to the emergency room doors. She shook herself off before heading to the nurses' desk to get answers about Luke.

"Hi! Could you please help me? I need to see Luke Danes right now. I mean, can I please see Luke Danes?"

The nurse smiled when Lorelai amended her demand into a request. "Are you family?" The nurse asked.

"LORELAI! Have you seen him?" Liz yelled as she ran towards the desk.

"This is Luke's sister! She's family!" Lorelai pointed.

The nurse looked at the computer and typed a few things, "Okay, Mr. Danes was brought in by ambulance. He was struck by a car. He just arrived about twenty minutes ago so he's back in O.R.3 you obviously can't go in, so please take a seat over there and I'll keep you posted."

"Miss?" Liz sniffed.

"Janet, my name is Janet," the nurse smiled.

"Could you tell me anything? I have a baby at home that I'm breastfeeding. My husband accidentally dropped my last batch of pumped milk, so I need to go home soon. Please! Anything."

"I'll tell you what, go sit down with your friend. I'll pop into the O.R. and see what I can find out."

"Thank you so much," Liz smiled.

Lorelai and Liz wandered over to the emergency room waiting area and sat together.

"So," Liz smirked, "The rumours that you were hiding in my brother's apartment for two days?"

Lorelai nodded.

"I hate to ask, cause Lord knows I'm no angel, aren't you married?"

Lorelai scoffed, "Chris lied."

"What?"

"Yeah, I found out that my so-called marriage was never legal."

"Wow, really?" Liz gasped.

"Yup. I went to have the licence translated as a gift to Chris and it was a job application form. When I called the guy in France he was under the impression that I knew. He thought he was part of a sweet proposal and that we planned to legalize it once we got home. But Chris saw on my face that I had second thoughts, third, fourth and fifth, thoughts all within the first day that I thought we were married. So he just let me believe that the marriage was -"

"Miss?" The nurse tapped Liz's shoulder.

Liz jumped to her feet, "Janet, hi!"

"I looked in on the surgery, they're almost done. The doctor will be out in a minute"

"Can you tell us anything?" Liz practically whined.

Janet looked sympathetically at Liz, "He's going to be okay, eventually."

A doctor then came up to them, "Are you the family of Lucas Danes?"

Liz, grabbed Lorelai's hand, "Yes. We are."

"Okay, he has a set of broken ribs, a broken ankle and a possible concussion. There was some internal bleeding but we've repaired all of that with the surgery. Considering he was hit head on he's very lucky. We'll know more about the head injury once he's awake."

"Thank you so much Doctor," Liz said through her tears. "Can we see him?"

They were finishing up when I left. Once they have him settled in a room, Nurse Janet will let you know."

"Thank you" Liz and Lorelai said in unison.

The doctor smiled and left, then Liz grabbed Lorelai into a big hug.

"It sounds like we have some time," Liz said. "I'm going to run home and pump. My boobs are killing me. I'll come right back. But I told them you're family so they should tell you everything. If they don't, call me. But I should be back in about an hour."

"Okay. See you soon," Lorelai smiled.

Liz hurried off and Lorelai pulled out her cell phone as she walked to the vending machine. "Hey Sweets. So here's the update," Lorelai caught Rory up on everything to start a phone tree. They agreed on which people to call immediately and who could wait until it wasn't in the middle of the night.

When she got off the phone, Lorelai stuffed the goodies from the vending machine in her purse and ducked into the washroom. She pushed the door closed and locked it. Then she slumped against the door and began to sob. The extreme level of fear and heartache she had from the thought of losing Luke finally overcame her. She was an utter mess, tears all over her face, snot dripping from her nose, her eyes swollen and red, and she couldn't catch her breath. She gasped, trying to take in big gulps of air as she tried to steady herself, holding onto the sink. She turned the water on to cold and tried to clean herself up, hoping the freezing water would reduce the puffiness. She then looked at herself in the mirror, combed her fingers through her hair, and let out a big sigh. She smiled at Nurse Janet as she emerged from the washroom.

"I was just coming to look for you," Janet smiled. "He's been taken to room 925 East. Would you like me to take you there?"

"Yes, please." Lorelai smiled weakly.

"Are you Lorelai?" Janet asked.

"Yeah."

"Good. He's been asking for you."

Lorelai was in Luke's dimly lit room, she could tell his head was hurting by the way he was squinting.

He opened his eyes with a groan. His head hadn't throbbed this much since the time Liz and Rachel managed to convince him to have Patty's Founder's Day Punch. When his eyes adjusted to the light and took focus on his surroundings he panicked.

"You're here," he said in a hoarse voice.

"You're awake!" Lorelai smiled, she was sitting in a chair that she had pulled up right beside the bed. His hand was sandwiched between hers and he could tell by her face that she was up and crying most of the night.

"Did you talk to him?" Luke asked.

"What?" She asked, trying to figure out which 'him' he meant. The doctor has implied that memory loss could be a factor and when he woke up to give him information slowly to figure out what he knows.

She squeezed his hand and reached her other hand to caress his face, "What do you remember?" She whispered.

Luke tried to sit up, but got hit with a dizzy spell, "Woah, I guess I have a head injury. Aaah, and it feels like my ribs - wait. Was I hit by a car?"

Lorelai got up from the chair and helped him shift into a better sitting position. She sat on the bed facing him and took his hand back in hers. She seemed to have a need to be touching him at all times. "Yeah, you did. Apparently someone sped through town, lost control, hit you and then took off. Patty got a quick look, but not good enough."

"Are you here alone?" He croaked.

She grabbed the pitcher of water the nurse left a little while ago and filled a cup. She moved the straw close to his lips, "Take a sip. Who do you want to see? I can call anyone you want. But yeah, I'm here alone now."

He took a small sip, "I was waiting for your call last night. Did you talk to him?"

Lorelai nodded and stroked his cheek, "Of course I did. He's gone. I packed his stuff myself when he refused to leave."

"He refused? You should have called me!"

Lorelai smiled and placed her hand over Luke's heart, "I love you so much. I know that you come running to my rescue, but what would that have accomplished? You two would have just gotten into a fight and it would have gotten physical."

"Maybe his ribs would have been broken, not mine," Luke smirked.

There was a small knock on the door and it opened slowly.

"Hello?" Liz whispered.

Lorelai smiled, "Hey Liz! Get in here, Luke's awake."

"Yay! Hey Big Brother, how do you feel? Can I hug you?" Liz squealed as she bounced into the room.

Lorelai got off the bed, "Stay away from his left side. Come here, I'll go out on the hall and call Rory, I want to keep her posted."

"Hey!" Luke grabbed her hand before she could get too far, "We're not leaving each other anymore without a kiss."

Her smile lit up the room, "I like that rule," she kissed him sweetly, hugged Liz and headed out the door.

"Is she gone?" Luke asked.

"Yeah, why?" Liz nodded while taking Lorelai's spot on his bed.

"She said they don't know who hit me."

"I'm so sorry."

"I know who it was. I saw the car!"

"Who was it?"
"It was Chris."
