"Damn it!" Neji swore, tossing the screwdriver aside. For the better part of an hour, Naruto had been watching him try to assemble a cot. He couldn't help but laugh, it was so rare that Neji wasn't good at something.
"It's just four sides and a base, how can it possibly be so difficult?" Neji frowned.
"Maybe it's time to admit defeat?" Naruto suggested. Neji looked over at him, scandalised.
"I hate losing," he pouted.
"I know you do," Naruto smiled sympathetically. "Come here, utsukushii."
Neji sighed and crawled over to him, resting his head on Naruto's thigh. Naruto stroked Neji's silky hair.
"Neji, what's the best tactical response here?"
"Well, if we don't possess the skill to complete the mission, we add someone to the team who can."
"Right," Naruto agreed, pondering their options. "So, who do we know that's good at this stuff?" Iruka sensei is pretty handy with practical things like this, but… "Wait! I've got it! It's so obvious. Why didn't I think of it before?"
"What?" Neji questioned, raising his head curiously. "Who?"
"Captain Yamato, of course! I'll bet he could whip up some awesome nursery furniture, no sweat. Pack this stuff up, Neji. We'll dump it off on Tenten, let it be Guy's problem."
Neji smiled and cupped his face.
"You are utterly brilliant sometimes."
"Sometimes?"
Neji smiled wider and kissed him happily.
After they had donated the unbuildable cot to the newlyweds, they tracked Captain Yamato down. He was working with the Hokage these days.
"Naruto, hey," his old captain greeted with a smile.
"We were wondering if you could do us a favour?" Naruto requested.
"Sure. How can I help?"
"Well, we need some baby furniture. We tried store bought stuff but it wasn't for us."
"It was a nightmare," Neji admitted. "Please help us."
"I'd love to," Captain Yamato agreed. "I have some time now, if you like?"
"Yes, please…" Neji accepted. "That would be wonderful."
They walked back, catching up with Yamato on the way. He was working for Kakashi now, pretty much just taking care of anything the Hokage couldn't be bothered to do himself, and he had started dating Shizune. He also told them how he was free to do so because his mission was over. Orochimaru had finally let go of his selfish aims, and had aligned himself with Kabuto.
"Do we need to be worried about those kids?" Naruto checked.
"No. Kabuto would never let anything happen to them. And besides that, I think Orochimaru finally realised just how precious Kabuto is to him. I'm sure he won't do anything to hurt or upset him. I think this could be a way for him to begin atoning…"
Well, if Yamato could find it in himself to let Orochimaru be, then it must be alright.
When they arrived home, they showed Yamato to the nursery, where he admired Sai's paintings. Then it was time to get to work.
"Any requests?" Captain Yamato asked.
"Nope," Naruto smiled. "Whatever you think is good."
"Right," Yamato said, summoning his chakra. Watching him work was always amazing, he was so powerful, and wielded his jutsu like a true artist.
The crib he created was incredible, Yamato had adorned it with the whirlpool of the Uzumaki as well as leaf insignia that was woven into a forest pattern to match the murals that Sai had painted.
"Oh wow!" Naruto marvelled. "It's beautiful! Our baby is so lucky. Don't you think so, Neji?"
"Yes. It's perfect. Thank you, Yamato."
Captain Yamato looked around the room thoughtfully.
"I suppose you'll need a change table too…" He expertly conjured one, followed by a highchair and more, each piece created to complement Sai's art and celebrate the Land of Fire.
They looked around the room in wonder when Captain Yamato was done.
"Thank you so much," Neji offered appreciatively. "This is incredible."
"If you ever decide to quit being shinobi, you could totally do this for a living," Naruto praised.
"I don't know if I could do this full time," Yamato said nervously. Obviously, it would take a fair bit of chakra.
"Oh wait," Naruto said, leaving the room and coming back with a blanket. It was the one Sakura had brought back from the Sand Village. He laid it in the crib as the finishing touch.
"Perfect," Naruto assessed. "Thanks heaps, Captain Yamato."
"You're very welcome," Yamato smiled. "And now I better get back before Kakashi makes too big of a mess of things..."
Once Yamato had left, they looked around the room in wonder. It was really real, very soon they were going to be bringing their baby back here. Naruto tucked himself under Neji's arm.
"Are you excited?"
"Yes," Neji said, kissing his hair. "Very much so."
"Me too. I can't wait to hold him and know he's ours."
