Derek's Denial:
Derek Faye was in his late fifties and was a carer for his elderly mother. Derek had shown several signs of being gay but he was in denial about his sexuality and became extremely offended and defensive when people assumed that him and his friend Leonard Minchin were gay. These people included his GP, the shopkeepers at his local newsagents, the taxi driver on his holiday, a man in the gents toilets, members at his drama group, his niece Tonya, the lady at the travel agents, a masseuse, and celebrity Bonnie Langford.
Derek often exclaimed by saying "How very dare you!" or "Who, dear? Me dear? Gay dear? No dear!" If Leonard was with him Derek would say "Come on Leonard we're off!"
In his eyes Derek couldn't understand why people assumed that he was gay and that Leonard was nothing more than a close friend. He just couldn't believe that people thought he was gay!
One day Derek would probably prove everyone's assumptions to be wrong by getting married to a woman and settle down and have family.
