AUTHOR'S NOTE:
This is a refurbished, expanded version of the original "Genesis of a Hero" story. Mostly conceived since I was told by a reader to try and polish it up instead of going for a zone per chapter. But yeah...now we're back in action, being co-written by my friend and fellow fanfiction alumni, PerkyGoth14.
So get comfy, grab a chili dog, and let the fun begin!
Designs were inspired by JorDanGo from DeviantART.
And for obvious reasons, I had to recast Kyle Massey. It was a difficult decision, but I had to make the choice.
Also, Happy Birthday to Me! 22 years old today!

In a dimension similar to our own, there exists a planet, like our Earth...called "Mobius". Like Earth, it acts as a home and habitat for living creatures of many species, all from different walks of life...even humanoid animals! Of course, they're called "Mobians", and boy-howdy, are they PLENTIFUL! As are the non-humanoid animals, known as Mobini.
But today, I'm here to tell you all a story…of a man and his dream, six unusual gems, a team of rebels, and a trio of teenage hedgehogs who were destined to become champions…
PROLOGUE: A Speedy Beginning
The ear-piercing wail of an electric guitar's strings being struck rang loudly through the suburban community of Acorn Acres. Many of the adult denizens of the neighborhood would be seriously pissed off and demand the noisemaker to knock it off.
But the younger residents, namely kids and teenagers, enjoyed listening to the sweet, sweet sounds of the local garage band...the Sonic Underground.
On the drums was a green hedgehog with a spiky mohawk, a pierced ear, and a snappy red vest with a matching fanny pack. This was Chauncey Cobalt, but he preferred to be called "Manic", due to his frenzied drumming style. Most grownups thought it referred to his odd fixation on taking minor, useless items like paper clips, condiment packets, discarded keys, and other such things.
On the keyboard was a magenta female hedgehog wearing a red shirt, purple pants & boots, accompanied by a pair of purple opera gloves. This was Sonia Cobalt, who fancied herself to be quite refined, as well as a major fashion expert, which put her in charge of designing the band's outfits if they ever got booked for a gig. In her spare time when she wasn't practicing with the band, she attended judo classes.
And on the guitar (and lead singer) was a cobalt-blue hedgehog with spiky mohawk-aligned quills, and a pair of red sneakers with a white stripe across their width. This was Maurice P. Cobalt, but to fans of the band, he was known as "Sonic" the Hedgehog. The reason for that was because of his super-speed, which he'd demonstrated plenty of times on the Mobotropolis High track team.
And as the triplets finished their latest jam session, there was no doubt Sonic had earned his title of "Fastest Thing Alive", as he topped off the song with a sweet guitar solo.
"...you know I'm Burnin' Way Past Cool!~" he finished, striking one last chord. "Not too shabby, eh, sibs?" he asked, turning to his brother and sister. "Were we great, or what?"
"Coulda used more drums, but I still call it a win," Manic replied, putting up his feet. "All we need is to get booked for a gig, and we'll be rakin' in the Mobiums!"
"Your giant egos aside, this was a pretty good practice," Sonia nodded to her brothers. "Maybe we will be booked...as long as we keep out of trouble," she tacked on, remembering an incident from a couple years back where they were chewed out for 'noise pollution'.
"Hey, so we were just beginners; cut us a break!" Manic insisted. "Even Alex Duper started out soundin' like nails on a chalkboard!"
"Anyways, all this rockin' hard has got the ol' stomach rumbling," Sonic remarked as he placed his guitar aside. "Time for a chili-dog break!"
And kicking his feet into blurry, spinning wheels, Sonic revved up and zipped into the house—VA-ROOOOM!—leaving a dust cloud in his wake.
"Boys…" Sonia rolled her eyes as she brushed her hair clean of the dust. "You better not make a mess everywhere like last time, or you're gonna have trouble, Maurice!" she yelled.
"Cool off, sis," Manic smirked as he got out a deck of cards. "In the meantime...wonder if you're up for a low-stakes game of poker?" he whistled innocently as he tossed the cards between his hands.
"...well, I guess a quick game couldn't hurt," Sonia shrugged. "At least it's some way to give my fingers a rest." she added, heading over to her green brother.
... ... ...
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Sonic was zipping around the kitchen, grabbing every ingredient he could find to prepare the coveted treat he enjoyed; while he was, his adopted cousin Muttski came into the kitchen to grab some corn chips.
"Ah, Sonic!" he commented as he watched the blue blur putting together a plateful of chili dogs. "Making some lunch, right? I just came in for some o' my corn chips."
"Uh, yeah…" Sonic said before smirking. "I don't suppose you'd like to join me?" he queried.
"Perish the thought," Muttski replied as he pulled his chips from the pantry. "I'll be in & out before you've topped your chili dogs with onions and extra cheese."
"Oh, you are so on," Sonic smirked as he narrowed his eyes in determination. "Just hope that you're ready to lose!"
Muttski shrugged. "I never said it was a competition," he responded. "But hey, whatever works for you, really."
"Meh, I just though I'd make things more interesting for us, buddy," Sonic smirked. "You don't got a problem with that, do ya?"
"No, I suppose not," Muttski replied as he got some chips from the bag and popped them into his mouth.
"Then it's on," Sonic decided with a nod. "Sonia and Manic are in the other room too."
"Knowing them? They're probably doing their own thing," Muttski replied. "So what exactly is the competition here? Refresh me on that."
"Eh, well, Manic suggested a card game and it seems like Sonia's gettin' in on it," Sonic replied with a small shrug. "Just thought it might be interesting, especially after a pretty long day."
"Well, it's nice to see they're keeping busy when they're not jamming out," Muttski nodded. "I've got my apprentice duties, Uncle Chuck has his alchemy, your parents have their jobs, and you've got your music...and your running."
"Yeah, it's a cycle for all of us…just how it goes," Sonic replied with a small shrug. "Nuthin' wrong with that. Plus we also always got Tom and Maddie and Jojo's way cool whenever she visits too," he then mumbled and rolled his eyes as he thought about the family who were like an extension of the Cobalt clan...including a certain family member they had. "Except for maybe 'Rancid Rachel'." he then scoffed about Jojo's mother and Maddie's sister.
"Ah, yes...Rachel the Roach…" Muttski rolled his eyes with a look of disgust. "...some branches just need to be totally clipped from the family tree."
"Yeah, you ain't kiddin'," Sonic rolled his eyes as well, just thinking about Rachel. "Anyway, feels like a pretty good day. How about ya come and join us?"
"I guess I could," Muttski relented. "Uncle Jules and Aunt Bernie are coming back from Station Square in an hour, and Mr. Chuck is taking a nap in his workshop, so that guarantees my itinerary is clear for the rest of the day."
"Come on then, bud," Sonic nodded in agreement. "Let's go hang out and enjoy the rest of what today has to offer."
And so, the two adoptive cousins headed off to have some fun with their free time. It felt like one of those days where nothing could go wrong.
Alas, the thing about days where nothing can go wrong is...sooner or later, something DOES go wrong.
The following hour, the Cobalt parents' car pulled into the driveway and parked outside.
"Well, here we are, m'dear," Jules smiled warmly at his wife. "Home sweet home."
"It's always good to be home again." Bernadette [or "Bernie", as she preferred sometimes] agreed with a nod as they disembarked from the car after a long time away from home. "I wonder what the kids are up to?"
"Knowing them, they've found something to do with their time," Jules replied as he headed up to the front door. "They've probably been having so much fun that they lost track!"
"Well, let's just hope they don't have too much fun and forget all about us." Bernie smirked playfully as she came to join him, putting her hand over the knob.
As the door opened, the two parents came inside and saw Sonic and Muttski, sound asleep on the couch.
"Well, I'll be…" Bernie said, surprised.
"Have they finally worn each other out? Especially Maurice?" Jules added.
"I suppose it was only a matter of time," replied Bernie. "Everyone has their limits...even kids."
"Then we'd better go to the kitchen and put everything away," Jules suggested as they walked by quietly so that Sonic and Muttski wouldn't be disturbed. He then chuckled. "At least even Maurice knows to take a break once in a while."
Bernie went over to the prone form of her sleeping son, and kissed his forehead before she joined Jules in the kitchen.
"Think maybe we should surprise the kids with a treat?" Jules suggested.
"Good idea," Bernie nodded. "What would be a nice surprise for all of them?"
Jules smiled warmly. "We'll get it together while we still have some free time, and then come get the kids to show them!" he then suggested.
"OK then!" Bernie replied as she put away the last of the items they purchased.
Jules smiled warmly at Bernie as he helped her sort out the groceries before picking out possible ingredients to use for their surprise for the kids.
"Ma?" Manic's voice spoke as he yawned and walked into the house, rubbing his eyes. "What's goin' on?"
"Oh, it's a secret, Chauncey," Bernie smiled before turning over. "Your father and I will be very busy here for a little while, so maybe you should go wait in the other room until we're done? You look so tired." she then suggested maternally.
Manic smacked his lips a few times, before he conceded. "Well...okay…" he replied, before he walked a few feet, and then collapsed on his face, sound asleep.
"Alright, that bought us some time to get things ready," Jules whispered. "Let's make the most of it."
"Come along then, dear." Bernie smirked as she followed Jules into the kitchen so that they could sort something out for their young ones.
A FEW HOURS LATER...
Soon, Sonic, Manic, Sonia, and Muttski woke up after a rather long rest and stretched as they got up from where they had collapsed into.
"Man, I never realized I was so tired," Sonia said sleepily. "I guess I just needed some extra beauty sleep."
Manic got up and stretched in the spot he'd passed out in. "I think I saw Mom an' Dad earlier…'' he yawned.
"Clearly, you must've dreamt it," Sonia rubbed her eyes.
"I must've?" Manic blinked, rubbing his eyes. "But it seemed so real…"
"Dreams can do that to ya sometimes," Sonia said before looking around. "Maybe we should go look for them since we're up now."
"Yeah…they gotta be home by now, right?" Sonic added with a yawn, once he sat up on the couch.
"Well, c'mon then, guys, let's go see what's going on." Sonia smiled before she decided to go on ahead of them.
Sonic and Manic smiled back, agreeing with their sister, and soon came to go with her to see what was going on.
"Hello? Is anyone out there?" Sonia called as she came with her brothers to see their parents.
"What do you guys have to eat?" Manic added with a chuckle.
"Hey Mom, Dad! One or both of you here?" called Sonic.
It seemed to be deathly silent for a while. The triplets made it into the kitchen and looked around, smelling something that was indeed cooking, but their parents were nowhere to be found. This concerned them and they even flinched as the doorknob in the room jiggled, and they braced for a possible fight…luckily, a familiar face was soon shown.
"Ah, there you three are!" Bernie smiled as she came through the door suddenly. "Have a nice little nap?"
"It was very refreshing, Mother," Sonia replied. "Did you bring anything back from your trip to Station Square?"
"Oh, maybe a little something special, but that depends…did anyone get into any trouble today?" Bernie said before she gave a playful smirk at her two sons as she put her hands on her hips.
"Who, us? Never!" Sonic replied with a small smile.
"Yeah, would we ever do that?" Manic added innocently.
"Well, I certainly wouldn't." Sonia said as she looked around peacefully.
"Good," Bernie nodded. "I don't think we're forgetting anything. Now let's wash up for dinner. Remember, scrub your hands for 20 seconds before rinsing!"
After washing their hands, the triplets all took their seats at the dinner table with their parents, settling in for suppertime. As they talked, laughed, and ate their dinner, it seemed like the peaceful times would last forever.
…but sadly, these times never last too long.
The following morning, after breakfast was eaten, Uncle Chuck got to his feet.
"Kids?" he asked. "There's something that I've been meaning to give you three for awhile."
"What is it, Unc?" inquired Sonic.
"Just something very special I've been keeping for years; I thought it was best to wait until you were all ready," Uncle Chuck said before smiling. "I just hope that you all treat it with the respect it deserves."
"Tell us, please!" Sonia urged before grinning a bit. "I hope it's something valuable."
"I want you all to have this," Uncle Chuck soon told the triplets and gave them a weathered old book, with some sticky notes jutting out from between a few of the pages. Even though it didn't look like anything special, it was clear that this little tome meant quite a bit to him.
"What's this?" asked Manic.
"It's…a book," Sonia commented as her tone seemed to deflate.
"It's my old journal from my days in scientific research," explained Uncle Chuck. "Within these pages is a peek into my past, which might hold secrets that could help you in the present."
"So it's kinda like a guidebook or somethin'?" Sonic asked.
"You could say that, yes," Uncle Chuck nodded.
The triplets all looked at each other before looking back at the older hedgehog rather curiously.
"I know that you kids will take very good care of this…and I know you'll do just fine on adventures of your very own," Uncle Chuck said, handing the book out to the triplets, though his hands went to Sonic's instinctively; he sounded almost paternal in his speech to the young hedgehogs. "I also know that you three will make me proud; you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it. Ever since you were born, I've had a sort of feeling that you three would do amazing things. What those things are remains to be seen…but I know you've got the capabilities."
Sonic, Manic, and Sonia all looked at each other before looking back at their uncle.
"That's a mondo-big responsibility, but we won't let ya down, Uncle Chuck." Sonic promised.
Uncle Chuck smiled. "I know ya won't, Sonny," he said, ruffling the quills on Sonic's head. "Now, could you three take care of some errands for me?"
He gave the triplets a small list that had been jotted down a little while ago.
"Just a few things I need for some experiments o' mine, that's all."
"Sure, Uncle Chuck. Anything." Sonic nodded.
"What is it?" Sonia added curiously.
"I'll need you to head out to Green Hills and go to the Lake of Rings," instructed Uncle Chuck. "Once every hour, a Power Ring emerges from its depths. If you could grab it and bring it back, I could find a way to alter its energy output and if I did, then it would provide power to an entire block…maybe even the whole neighborhood for five years!"
"Really?" The triplets asked, all agape in a rather simultaneous fashion.
"Really, really." Uncle Chuck nodded proudly and truthfully.
"Right… Check for Power Rings…" Sonic nodded. "That sounds manageable, Unc."
"I know you won't let me down." Uncle Chuck said, smiling proudly and almost paternal. "Now, before you go, be sure to take one of these."
He went over to a crate and pulled out a gray, square-shaped computer monitor.
"So…what exactly IS that?" inquired Sonia.
"It's a Monitor Unit," explained Uncle Chuck. "They may look cumbersome, but they're made of a very lightweight material. And, they can transform objects into data so that they're easier to carry around. Back when I first made 'em, I figured they'd revolutionize camping; no more struggling with your supplies when you're packin' up to go home!"
Manic picked it up and pressed a button on the side; with a bright, rainbow-colored flash, the Monitor Unit shrank down and reformatted itself into a wristwatch-size, straps and all!
"Now THIS is most awesome!" he gushed as he picked it up and strapped it to his wrist. "OK, sibs, let's get to the Underbus!"
The Underbus, in question, was an old camper van that Uncle Chuck and Jules had fixed up back in the day, as a present for Sonia when she passed her driver's test. She DID complete it, but she preferred to get around using her motorcycle. But then, Manic had the idea "Hey, what if we made this our tour bus?"
"We could do that?" Sonia wondered.
"Why not?" Manic replied with a shrug. "I think it sounds like a pretty cool idea…"
"Brother, when you make a point, it's a GOOD point!" Sonic chimed in. "Besides, I got super-speed, not super-strength. And it would be much easier to carry our band equipment that way."
And to sum it up, that was how they got the Underbus. Of course, they hadn't been booked for any big shows apart from a gig at Jojo's birthday party a few months ago, but they didn't give up hope.
"Are you all set to go?" Sonia asked as she narrowed her eyes in determination.
"All set, and ready to jet!" Sonic replied as he got into the Underbus, with Manic following behind and carrying his hoverboard.
"Let's hit the road, boys!" Sonia proclaimed as they soon took off for their brand new adventure off into the unknown.
Uncle Chuck waved to the triplets as they exited the driveway, and once they reached the street, they turned right and drove off.
However, none of them noticed a bulky-looking figure emerging from the bushes as they left. It was a humanoid-shaped robot, with a shiny metallic gray-and-white paint job. It was roughly six feet tall, with a single red-tinted optical visor, which seemed to blink. Melee spikes protruded from the joints and head, while large "fins" occupied the forearms.
It turned its head towards the Cobalt home, as its red visor glowed with a scanning light.
"PRIORITY ONE: HEDGEHOG DOMICILE LOCATED." it said in a robotic monotone as it began to move towards the house, its metallic footsteps clanking all the way...
END OF PROLOGUE.
Now the true game begins…
