Little Miss Music was stuck at her house, sick. She felt miserable. She had a headache, her whole body hurt, and worst of all she couldn't stop sneezing and coughing.
She's been sick since yesterday morning and she was hoping it was just a 24 hour bug but she woke up still sick, even though she's been taking medicine.
She groaned and rolled over in bed, but then she reached over her nightstand to get a tissue and blow her nose. As she tossed it into the trashcan she was surprised to hear a knock at her door.
Who could that be? she thought as she dragged herself out of bed. She had told her best friend, Little Miss Calamity, that she was sick so she couldn't go out and she said she'd tell a few others so they wouldn't bother her.
In the living room, she spotted her cat, Jingle stretched out on the sofa. For a moment she stood there and watched her sleep peacefully, envying her a little because ever since she's been sick, she has not been sleeping well.
Then she heard another knock at her door and went to answer it. She was surprised to find her Senpai, Mr. Grumpy, standing on her doorstep.
"I heard you aren't feeling well, Miss. Music," he said with concern in his eyes.
She was about to reply when she was overtaken with a coughing fit. Quickly Mr. Grumpy guided her over to the sofa where she sat down, which made Jingle jump up and meow indignantly.
"Sorry, Jingle," she murmured, reaching over to pet her but her hand shook as she coughed again and Jingle hopped off the sofa, meowing complaints.
"That cough doesn't sound good," Mr. Grumpy observed, looking down at her. "Are you taking anything for it?"
"Cough syrup," she replied. "And also cold medicine. I'm sure it's just a cold and it'll go away in a day or two." She broke off in another coughing fit.
Mr. Grumpy eyed her. "Are you drinking enough water? And eating? Have you been to the doctor's?"
Little Miss Music stared at him, wondering why he looked so worried and why he was asking her all this. It almost seemed like he… Oh my! He cares that I'm sick!
Love swelled in her heart and she barely noticed when she started coughing again. But clearly Mr. Grumpy noticed and seemed very worried about her silence.
"You need someone to take care of you while you're sick," he suddenly announced, surprising her.
"But… But what if you get sick?" she asked.
"I have a strong immune system," he assured her. "I never get sick." He turned toward the kitchen. "When was the last time you took some medicine?"
She tried to stand up but he turned back and gently pushed her back down. "You shouldn't be standing or walking around when you're this sick," he told her.
She was torn. She felt warm happiness that he seemed to care so much about her, but she also didn't want to be completely useless. She's able to do some things and she'd feel bad if she let her Senpai do everything for her.
But the stern look he was giving her made her sigh and reluctantly sat back. "I took some about 30 minutes ago," she said.
"Okay, so you're probably good on that. What about fluids? You need to drink plenty of water when you're sick."
"I have a bottle of water by my bed," Little Miss Music replied, and she watched as Mr. Grumpy disappeared into her bedroom, reappearing again with her bottle.
"Here." He handed her the bottle and she drank a little. She turned back to Mr. Grumpy when he asked again," Have you been to the doctor's?"
She nodded. "I went this morning. Mr. Happy just told me to drink water and continue to take medicine like I've been doing." She coughed. "I've been drinking and taking medicine," she told him. "But I haven't been able to eat much because just the thought of food makes me feel sick to my stomach."
"Do you have soup?" he asked. "You should eat something."
Little Miss Music, suddenly very exhausted, laid down on the sofa as she answered. "I have soup in the pantry." Her eyelids became heavy, and she tried to murmured a "thank you" to her Senpai, but she wasn't sure if she actually formed any words before she dozed off.
Someone shaking her gently woke her and she opened her eyes to find herself staring up at Mr. Grumpy. She was confused at first; then she remembered that he showed up and offered to look after her while she's sick.
Yawning, she sat up and saw that he held a bowl in his hand. She realized she was covered with a blanket, and she guessed he had covered her up. He gave her the bowl and she smelled something delicious. It was chicken noodle soup.
"Thank you," she said, picking up the spoon and eating some. It tasted so good. She didn't realize she was so hungry. She really haven't been able to eat much for the last two days, and she eat half the soup before turning back to Mr. Grumpy, who had settled himself in the chair next to the sofa.
"How'd you sleep?" he asked.
She blinked, realizing she felt more rested than she's felt since she got sick. "Really good," she answered, and then she ate a few more spoons full.
"That's good," Mr. Grumpy said.
When she finished the soup, Mr. Grumpy took the bowl and went into the kitchen. As she waited for him to return, she drank out of her bottle until it was empty. She felt like she had a bit more energy and she was about to go get more water, but Mr. Grumpy came back and told her to rest, and he went to fill up her water bottle.
A short while later, Mr. Grumpy announced that he was going home and asked if she needed anything before he left.
She shook her head. "No, I'm good." She added," Thank you so much, Mr. Grumpy. I feel so much better already."
"Glad to hear that." He headed toward the front door. "Call me if you need to. I'll come back tomorrow to check on you."
"Thank you," she said again, and he left.
For the rest of the day, Little Miss Music listened to music, daydreaming about her Senpai and how sweet he had been today. At bedtime, she took more medicine and laid down.
In the morning, she woke, feeling more like herself. She wasn't coughing. She didn't have a headache nor did her body hurt. She was sure she was over her sickness, and it was all thanks to Mr. Grumpy. She couldn't wait to tell him when he came over.
But the day went on with no sign of the grumpy Mr. Man. By noon, she was getting very worried. She thought about calling him, but she wanted to see him, so she decided to go to his house to check on him.
She walked through town, and when she got to his house, she knocked on the door. But there was no answer. Now fearing the worst, she slowly opened his door and poked her head in. The living room was empty.
Heart racing with fear, she walked farther into the house. She heard someone coughing and followed it to the bedroom where she found Mr. Grumpy in bed, covered up and coughing and sneezing.
"Senpai!" she gasped and ran over there.
He looked up, fever clear in his eyes. "Miss. Mu–" He broke off in a coughing fit.
"Oh, Mr. Grumpy, I'm so sorry I got you sick," she said, frowning.
He weakly waved his hand. "No big deal." He coughed. "How are you feeling?"
She honestly half expected him to be mad or annoyed that he got sick taking care of her, but she didn't see those emotions on his face. "I'm not sick anymore, thanks to you."
He made an expression that looked like relief. But then he started coughing again.
"And now," she went on," I'm going to take care of you."
"But–"
"No 'but's, I'm taking care of you, like it or not, because you took care of me." She looked around. "Are you drinking water?"
He shook his head. "I haven't been able to get out of bed today," he replied, coughing.
"I'll get you some." She left his bedroom and found a bottle in the kitchen. She filled it with water and returned to him, handing it to him.
"Thanks, Miss. Music." He sat up enough to take several long gulps before putting the bottle on his night table and laying back down.
"Do you want to eat or rest?" she asked.
He coughed. "Rest. I can't eat right now. I feel too sick."
"Okay. I'll let you rest. But I'll be in the living room so yell if you need something."
She turned to walk out of the bedroom, but stopped when Mr. Grumpy called her back. He smiled slightly and said," Thank you, Miss. Music."
She smiled back. "You're welcome, Senpai."
Then she left the room to let him rest and went to the living room. She decided to watch TV instead of putting on music in her headphones so she could hear if he called her. As she settled in his chair, she felt bad that she got him sick, but now at least she can take care of him like he took care of her.
