Ladybug was pacing back and forth across the platform near the top of the Eiffel Tower. 'Patrol' was a strong word for what was happening. Sure, it started as patrol, but ever since they got all the Miraculouses back, they had been hanging out a few times a week, getting to know each other as people before they were planning to reveal their identities.
She'd asked for the reveal soon after they'd gotten the jewels back, but Chat Noir had turned down the idea. He gave her about half of an excuse, but if he wasn't ready, she wasn't going to try to force him to be.
He hopped across one of the final rooftops to their meeting point and was almost entranced by her pacing. They were heroes, they saved the city if not the world- what did Ladybug still have to be so stressed about?
"Evening, little bug," he greeted when he landed a few meters from her. "Is everything okay?" She turned toward him and stopped her pacing. She opened her mouth, thinking that she was ready to say something, but she closed her mouth soon after.
Now that he was closer, he could see how bright she was. She'd looked stressed before he arrived, but she was so happy. That made him feel better. He didn't want to distract her if she had something serious that was worrying her.
"Everything is great," she assured honestly. "Better than great, actually." She looked away from him slightly and the smile on her face was one he hadn't seen since she first started dating her 'other boy.' She started dating him around the same time as he began dating Marinette and he couldn't be happier for his partner.
"I do have something that I want to talk to you about, though," she added after a brief pause. He felt himself almost wince. He knew that she just said everything was great, but those words left a bad taste in his mouth, the 'we need to talk' that tv shows seemed to always show as the beginning of an end.
He knew that there was no more need for Ladybug and Chat Noir, heroes of Paris. That didn't mean that he was ready to introduce himself as Adrien Agreste, former male model and son of their decade-long nemesis. He was hopeful that his engagement would mean he could introduce himself as Adrien Dupain-Cheng without garnering any strange looks.
Marinette said yes when he asked her the previous week and neither of them wanted a big ceremony, but she did mention that she had someone in mind to officiate the ceremony. He was almost surprised it wasn't Alya, but he understood that Marinette, no matter how small the wedding, would want Alya at her side as her Maid-of-Honor.
"Of course," he agreed, "What's on your mind?" He sat down, dangling his legs off the side of the platform. He hoped that sitting would help her calm down- it would at least stop her pacing and maybe lower her heart rate a bit. With his increased senses, he could practically hear her heart pounding in her chest and he wondered, briefly, if Marinette could hear his heart race before he popped the question.
She sat next to him with a quiet 'plop', dangling her legs in the same direction. She took a deep breath and he wondered what was going on in her mind- this was less confident than he had seen her since they first started out as heroes.
Ladybug brought her hands together, idly fiddling with her fingers as he could practically see the gears turning in her head. "Okay, so," she exhaled, "I've been thinking about this for a few days and I know this might be… uh… unexpected because we haven't revealed our identities yet." She closed her eyes in preparation, opening her eyes to say her next words.
"Will you marry me?" He wasn't certain he heard her correctly. No, he was certain he hadn't heard her correctly. There was no way that 'better than great' led to her asking him to marry her, especially the same week that he'd asked Marinette the same.
"What? No." She looked disheartened by his answer. He didn't know how she was so saddened by his answer. The last thing she'd mentioned about her relationship, she and her boyfriend had just signed a lease on an apartment together, and he was sure that he'd told Ladybug the day he bought Marinette's engagement ring.
If Ladybug and her boyfriend broke up, he would be the best friend to her that he could, but he wasn't going to call off his own engagement, especially for a girl he'd had feelings for when he was younger. She curled her knees to her chest and laid her head on them, looking smaller than he'd ever seen her.
She knew the chances of him immediately saying yes were low, but figured the two of them would at least be able to have a discussion about it rather than just shutting her down. She blinked once, twice, taking a deep breath in and out before she offered a response. "I know you still need time before the reveal, but I thought it would be really special to have you be part of my wedding."
"Yeah," he agreed, "I think I could be part of your wedding, but I'm pretty sure my fiancée might have some issues with me being the groom in someone else's wedding. She's a bit jealous in that way." He chuckled a bit at his own comment.
"Groom?" Her question was asked through a laugh. "I have that much handled without your input, at least. Why would I need you to be my groom when I already have the most loving man I could ask for?"
"I don't know. You tell me- you just asked me to marry you!" She paused again, thinking through what she said and her face went pale- even paler than her natural complexion.
"I did," she admitted in surprise. "Oh, kwamis, I did just ask you to marry me." She shook her head. He was able to figure out what she meant 99% of the time, but this. The silly 1%. "Okay, reset. Chaton, will you marry me to my fiancé? Will you act as our officiant?" With the clarification, he smiled.
"Probably," he said with a shrug. "When is the wedding? My princess said yes last week, so I don't want to commit myself to your wedding when I need to prioritize my own."
The usage of 'princess' gave Ladybug a moment of pause. He'd never used that nickname to refer to his girlfriend before, but she did recognize it as the nickname he'd always used when Chat Noir talked to her as Marinette. It made her feel strange that she'd had the same nickname as his now fiancée.
"In November," she informed him, "The 17, it's just going to be a small wedding, so we don't need a lot of time to put together a big celebration. Hopefully, you'll be able to help with ours and still have time to plan your own." It was his turn to go pale.
He exhaled the words, "I can't," before giving her a sad look all his own. "We're getting married the same day." Her shoulders fell at the realization that he wouldn't even be able to attend her wedding, let alone be part of it. "But I'm ready for an identity reveal, if you and M. Ladybug would be interested in a double date before the big day."
She nodded. "Yeah," she agreed. She knew she would have to find a new officiant, but that was something to worry about as Marinette when she next talked to Adrien. She told him she had an officiant in mind too quickly for him to even share his thoughts on the matter, maybe he had a suggestion. "Yeah, we'd love to meet you and Mlle. Noir before the weddings."
The two of them stood wordlessly. Something about standing up just felt more appropriate for the reveal that they'd both been anticipating for as long as they'd known each other. "So, eyes open or closed for the transformation?"
She considered the question before answering. "Closed." They stood about a meter from one another before each closing their eyes and saying their detransformation phrases. He saw the colors of their transformations flash through his eyelids. Seconds, almost a minute, passed before she spoke again. "Have you opened your eyes?"
"No." Given that she didn't have any reaction to seeing him, he'd guessed the same of her. "Okay," he breathed, "we'll open them on the count of three. One…"
"Two…"
"Three." Their voices were perfectly unified for the end of the count, and they both opened their eyes, staring at their respective significant others. A grin grew across his lips as he looked at his fiancée. "I guess I will marry you after all." All cards on the table, the two of them stepped towards each other to share the first kiss of the rest of their lives.
