Walking Dead: Forging a New Path

A little short start to introduce a new Walking Dead story, just something I'm doing for fun, not quite so drastic as my other stories, but still should have a few dramatic moments, anyway, enjoy.

Disclaimer: I don't own Walking Dead or its characters.

Chapter 1

It was the start of another day that saw the teenage girl getting ready for school. Said girl was sixteen and of medium height with long dirty blonde hair, brown eyes and fair skin with a slender slightly curvy build, she had just finished getting dressed, a pair of simple jeans and a dark green long sleeve T-shirt, a pair of dark sneakers finished the casual look off but she wasn't quite ready yet. She had her schoolbag already set up, but it was another bag, a sports bag, that she was in the process of putting a few more things into, notably two water bottles, a pair of cleats and a towel. With that all packed in addition to what was already there, the girl zipped the bag closed, slung the strap over her shoulder, picked up her school bag and headed out of her bedroom.

Living in a small apartment, she didn't have to walk pretty far before she was in the kitchen where her mother was making breakfast. Her mother, a gray haired middle-aged woman with blue eyes; her hair medium long and rather pale and slender, smiled at her as she sat down, setting her bags down too.

"Morning mom." The girl greeted.

"Good morning, Sophia, how are you?" Her mother replied.

Smiling at her mom, Carol, Sophia Peletier shrugged.

"Ah, you know, another day."

Carol just nodded and brought the plates over to the table, the two of them starting their breakfast, enjoying the moment of contented peace. It was still a novelty to them, having such a quiet moment, after their past until at least a year ago now.

Finally, after a while just eating, Sophia spoke up.

"So um, mom...Will you be able to come to my game today?" She asked.

Carol paused, then sighed sadly. "I'm sorry sweetie, I won't be able to. I have an interview set at that time, and a few others throughout the day."

That instantly caught Sophia's attention. "You do, that's great!"

She was a little disappointed her mom couldn't come to the game, but hearing why certainly lessened the sting. The prospect of her mother finally getting the job she had her heart set on, one she so richly deserved, filled Sophia with hope.

Carol was a little more grounded though. "It's not certain yet Sophia, don't get your hopes up."

"They'd be mad not to hire you." Sophia proclaimed.

Carol just smiled, touched by her daughter's support.

Finally they finished breakfast and washed up. Carol then turned to Sophia.

"I still have some time, want me to give you a ride to school?" She offered.

Sophia smiled and nodded. "That'd be great, thanks mom."

So together, with Sophia picking up her bags, they exited the apartment and headed out to the apartment blocks parking lot. There they approached Carol's car, an old, somewhat beat up model. All she could afford, especially due to the rough situation the ladies had gone through getting to this point.

'After everything, after Ed, I'm just glad to have a car at all.' Carol reflected. 'Sophia doesn't mind at least.'

As she thought that she got into the car as Sophia finished putting her school and sports bags in the trunk. Once Sophia got in the passenger seat and they had their seat belts fastened, Carol started the car up and they pulled out, beginning the drive to Sophia's school. Things had been rough, they were still trying to make them better, but the two Peletier females knew they had each other and for them, that was enough.
