Chapter 02: Sumire
July 7 2005
I let out a yawn, eyes slightly watering due to lack of sleep, feeling the boredom threatening to overtake me as Yamaguchi-sensei's lecture was even more monotonous than it normally was. He seriously had nothing new to tell us, repeating the same stuff he said two weeks ago even if it was in preparation for the upcoming exams. My mind was drifting off, and my eyes were ready to close.
Should I go and bother Chifuyu? Or maybe find either Ryusei or Baji? That would be more interesting than … huh? I blinked at the sudden groans coming from the hallway, someone let out a pained shout and there was a familiar chuckle that I recognised from anywhere coming from outside my classroom.
The classroom's door was pulled open, revealing an unfazed Draken standing in the doorway, glancing around before his eyes rested on me. There was a small twinkle in them, my lips pulled into an involuntary smile when he tilted his head backwards.
"Mikey, I found Sumire," he said, pointing a lazy thumb in my direction, blatantly ignoring Yamaguchi-sensei's protests and demands to know who they were, why they were invading the school and what school they were from.
It was as if the older man was an empty air to him, I thought with amusement.
"Umi-chan !" Mikey popped into the doorway, forcing Draken to take a step back, grinning at me.
My eyebrow twitched, I picked up an eraser and threw it at him, "What have I told you about calling me Umi-chan in public, huh, Mikey?" My eraser hit Mikey's head, making Draken chuckle and Mikey pout.
"What was that for, Umi-chan?" He demanded, easily catching the eraser before it fell on the floor. I groaned, planting my face on my desk, mumbling a few colourful words they couldn't hear. Why did I even bother?
"Maybe it's 'cause she's told you one too many times to stop calling her that, Mikey," Draken suggested with a light chuckle, there was a sound of footsteps approaching my desk, referring to the fact that he also disliked being called Kenchin in public.
I didn't mind it when we were amongst ourselves, those were the moments when we could all be who we wanted. Without any kind of responsibilities or expectations.
"But that was a good throw, Sumire."
Weakly, I raised a hand and flipped them both off, while glaring at the wooden desk. My phone vibrated in my pocket, indicating someone had sent me a message. My classmates broke into badly covered whispers, barely masking their dislike of seeing an infamous delinquent duo invading our classroom.
"Hanagaki-san!"
"Ne, why are Toman's top two here?"
"I thought it was weird Hanagaki's good at fighting…"
"Yeah, but Toman?"
"She's friendly with Matsuno."
"Hanging out with delinquents, scary."
At the last remark, I raised my head and threw a glare at them, daring them to say anything more about the people I called my friends. They flinched, instantly pretending they hadn't said anything. I knew what the students thought about me hanging out with delinquents, saying things like how a girl should know better instead of getting involved with questionable folks. I'd heard unpleasant whispers in the hallways, and seen how Chifuyu happened to hear them too.
I had to stop him from making a scene more than once, and still heard how he'd beaten someone up for badmouthing me. I'd always known how people viewed delinquents, and despite it all, I still chose this life.
"Come on, Umi-chan," I turned my attention back to Mikey, who was now standing in front of my desk, his black jacket wrapped around his shoulders. An air of authority oozing from him, and a fake smile donning his face, "You're free, right?"
His tone was cold, lacking the usual warmth.
"We got some intel about Kiyomasa's Fight Club you've been hunting for," Draken added, smirking as he knew I'd been feeling stressed about that shit-face dragging Toman's name down.
'Toman's Fight Club' had started to gain some popularity among certain groups, I'd first heard about it from a couple of guys in my class but upon further investigation, they knew nothing of importance. I did ask Baji and Chifuyu to keep an eye out for any weird rumours, telling them to notify me immediately if the mastermind was discovered. However, they had no luck either.
What we did know was that some questionable members of Toman were going around, beating up guys and forcing them to fight while betting money. A never-ending circle.
"Mh? Kiyomasa…?" I repeated, looking up at Draken, intrigued. Then my eyes widened as I realised the two had gotten the information we needed to shut that shit down. "You mean you found out?!" I stood up, and the sudden act caused the chair to land on the ground with a loud thud.
"Yeah, you in?"
"Hell yeah!" I nodded, instantly grabbing my bag and shoving everything on the desk into my bag. "You know I've been waiting to deal with those shits."
Mikey chuckled, "Kenchin's more than enough for them, but we're taking you along to make it more formal. For sullying Toman's name," he said, making his way out of the classroom. Draken scowled at the nickname, throwing a fist on my head for daring to laugh at his expense. I muttered a series of 'ouch, that hurt'.
"W-wait, Hanagaki-san?!" Yamaguchi-sensei blurted out, eyes widened into saucers, as he tried to stop us from leaving. We paused at the doorway, the other end, and I glanced at him. "Where do you think you're going?!"
"Somewhere, where I don't end up falling asleep since your voice's soooo boring, sensei ," I replied with a grin, and a wave, before I was pulled away by my two best friends. Yamaguchi-sensei attempted to follow us after his initial shock was over, but by the time he caught up to the front doors, we were long gone.

The air felt nice on my face, my hands were clutched around Mikey's waist, as we cycled towards the park where the Fight Club was taking place. Draken hadn't wanted to use their normal bikes, the sounds being a dead giveaway to them approaching, wanting to catch them red-handed, and despite the ride being much slower than normally, I still found myself enjoying it.
The times spent with just Draken and Mikey were rare, and while I knew today's reason, I still decided to take the best of it. Especially, since Mitsuya had texted me telling me that he was a little busy today with his club matters, and couldn't meet up until late in the day. I'd sulked for the majority of lunch much to Chifuyu's amusement, his laugh had earned a chopstick being thrown at him and Baji and Ryusei making fun of him.
I'd sent them a quick little text, mentioning that it was just Mikey and Draken who'd invaded our school this time around and I was gonna head out with them.
"So, do we know anything about the fight club?"
"Yeah, apparently it's Pah's division arranging it," Draken answered, glancing at me. "By that Kiyomasa and Red guy, or whatever their names are."
I hummed, "Let me guess, Pah and Peh-yan don't know about it?"
"Yeah."
"Pachin and Peh-yan are stupid, after all," Mikey said, smiling in memory of his Third Division's captain and vice-captain. The number of times their stupidity had gotten either them or all of us in trouble…were ridiculously large. "No wonder their division is acting like this."
"True, but I doubt they'd let it slide if it sullies Toman's name," I said, knowing just how loyal the two were to Mikey, and Toman. Pah was, after all, one of seven founding members.
Both Draken and Mikey nodded in agreement.
I glanced at Mikey's back, watching the way the wind was playing with his blonde hair. There was something about Mikey that kept pulling me to him - commanding me to follow him and seek approval. But I knew, just as Draken knew, that Mikey was hiding his inner conflicts from us.
He expected us to open up to him, but he didn't do the same with us, and that worried me. More than I wanted to admit.
…卍…
If there was something I didn't expect to find in that 'Toman Fighting Club' then it was to see my year younger cousin, Takemichi, and his four best friends being part of the shit-show. I frowned, remembering the conversation I'd happened to over-hear between my mother and aunt, discussing how Michi had been coming home covered in bruises but he refused to tell them anything.
My mother had asked me if I knew anything, but I was just as surprised as they were. On the other hand, I'd noticed my poor excuse of a brother, Masaru, flinching slightly before he scurried away. Somehow, Masaru seemed to know that I wanted to ask him what was up with that but whenever I attempted to approach him, he was fast to disappear.
He wouldn't even let me into his room and would refuse to be around me for more than absolutely necessary. It had started to annoy me to the point that others had taken notice of my growing irritation and bad mood.
But this? My eyebrow twitched, as I stared at the scenery where Kiyomasa (I only knew it was him since I'd seen him during meetings, and didn't like his presence) was beating down on my cousin. I never expected Michi to have gotten caught in whatever shit my brother was involved with.
I ignored the questioning looks my irritation had gained from both Draken and Mikey, "...He's dead…"
"Mh? Who?"
"The kid?"
"Kiyomasa," I growled out, something in my tone caused Draken to stop me.
"Not worth the trouble that comes with it, Sumire," he said, shoving me towards Mikey, who had somehow found a dorayaki in my bag and was calmly eating it.
At the same time, the ass-shit shouted something about someone handing him a bat causing his audience to fall back in shock. There were whispers about how this was supposed to be one-on-one, a fight without weapons. Truly, how did such a disgusting idiot end up in Toman?
"Oi, Kiyomasa!" Draken called out, we'd finally managed to approach the duo in the circle. My eyes scanned my cousin, inspecting him for any injuries that would need immediate attention. "You're losing the audience. Calm the hell down, you're the organiser."
There wasn't a hint of amusement in Draken's voice, making the guys stare at our sudden appearance in shock. I walked a bit behind him, mentally doing a rough counting of how many were there and seeing if I saw any familiar faces or not. I found a few, recognising them from Pah's unit. Pah's not gonna enjoy this, I thought with a promising glint in my blue eyes.
I was suddenly hungry for blood.
"That blond braid," I heard Michi's friend, Akkun, say. Stunned and shocked at seeing someone he considered a legend, how many times had I walked in on them talking about my friends without them knowing my connections to the lot? One too many times. "And the dragon tattoo on his temple…no friggin' way…The Vice-Leader of the Tokyo Manji Gang - Ryuguji Ken aka Draken!"
"Heeyy, Kenchin, Umi-chan?"
"Huh?!"
"Don't call us by that nickname, Mikey!" Draken said, not liking how Mikey was constantly ruining our public image with those nicknames of his. Then again, there weren't many who dared to call us with the same names. A guy, once, tried to call me Umi-chan only to instantly end up beaten up by Mikey, and telling him not to call me so casually. Before he was dragged away by Mitsuya's unit.
"Ya want another eraser thrown at you? Or maybe a rock?" I asked, pointing at the random pebble on the ground near my feet, feeling my eyebrow twitching.
"I'm all out of dorayaki ," Mikey said, with a grin, mouth covered with pieces of pancakes. My eyes widened and I started to search my bag, finding it empty of treats.
"HUH!? MIKEY YOU FUCKER - THEY WEREN'T ALL FOR YOU!" I snapped, gaining the crowd's attention. I could hear someone's astonishment at why a girl was there. I made a swing at Mikey, which he playfully dodged, making me growl.
"M-Mire-nee? Why is she here?" Someone from Michi's friendship group asked, stunned.
"You idiot, that's Toman's Vice-Assistant, Hanagaki Sumire!"
"Huh?"
"Mh? Wait a minute - Hanagaki?"
As if in realisation whose presence they were standing at, the entire crowd instantly bowed down, with a loud good afternoon greeting. Draken had let Mikey walk ahead of him, the two of us walking side by side as we did whenever attending official matters. I hadn't wanted my cousin to find out about my involvement with the Tokyo Manji Gang. I hadn't wanted him to know about this part of my life, I thought with a hint of regret in my chest. I wanted him to keep thinking that I was his slightly tomboyish cousin on whom he could rely.
"Good afternoon, Commander!"
"Looks like they do know their manners," I whispered to Draken, who smirked at me. "But everything else is severely lacking."
"Mi-Mi-...Sano-kun!" I glanced at the guy, who was closest to Mikey, trying to gain his attention. "I… I ride with the number 3 biker gang! My name's Akaishi."
I shook my head, grinning when his words fell on deaf ears.
"Move it," Draken said, and I knew he was secretly enjoying it just as much as I was. If not more. "Mikey doesn't talk to people who don't interest him."
"Unlucky for you," I piped up, faintly recalling Pah telling this Akaishi or Red to shut the fuck up during the last meeting. "You're far from interesting."
"Ah," he looked taken aback. "S-Sorry."
"Even Red-kun didn't talk back to them." I looked up to where Akkun and Makoto were standing, too stunned to properly register what was happening. The other two, who weren't bowing, were Takuya and Yamagishi.
I remembered Takuya hanging out with Michi since they were kids. I knew the five of them had been pretending to be delinquents when they couldn't even hold up a proper fight for long. I sent a questionable look at Akkun, who caught it, but instead of saying anything, he looked away. As though in shame. I sent them a small wave, hearing Michi shockingly exclaim my name.
Completely missing out on when exactly Draken kicked Kiyomasa but liking the sight of him being in pain.
" - That's how low you should bow when greeting the president," was all I managed to catch from Draken, sniggering when the idiot muttered in confirmation of understanding.
The dumb-shit watched us passing him, while Mikey was approaching my cousin, I turned to the person in charge of this dumb fight club.
"We still have business to discuss, so don't take off, ne, Bakamasa ." My words were goated in promising threats if he dared to disobey me.
