Chapter 03: Sumire

July 7 2005

I watched as Mikey walked over to my stunned cousin, who had fallen on the ground, eyeing the situation warily. I wondered if there was a need for me to let Mikey know that the beaten-up idiot was my cousin. Draken, who'd noticed my unease, placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. I nodded, showing him that I understood that whatever decision Mikey came to was final and nothing I said would change his mind.

"What's your name?"

"Ha-Hanagaki Takemichi," my cousin replied, eyes widened. I wouldn't be surprised if he was shaking from fear, ever since we were kids, Michi was fast to cry. That was one of the reasons why I'd tried to avoid bringing him into my world - the world of delinquents wasn't as forgiving as they thought it to be.

It was unforgivingly cruel and cold, showing no mercy to those who were weak and had no will to fight back. Our world left a mark in people's memories, be it a good or a bad one. But not many came out of it unscratched.

"Okay, Takemitchy," Mikey said, briefly glancing at me before he looked down at my cousin. I could feel Draken's eyes on me, likely making a connection between us due to our shared family names. The only similarity we shared was our blue eyes, something that I didn't even share with my older brother.

It sometimes made me wonder if Michi was actually my brother, instead of Masaru. I would've liked that a lot more.

"Huh?"

I sighed and dragged a hand over my head. There's a limit to how dumb you can get, Michi!

"If Mikey says so, then that's what it is. Takemitchy," Draken clarified, still glancing between me and Michi. I could almost hear the gears in his brain turning, he'd heard me talking with Michi on the phone enough times but had never met him until now.

"Huh?"

I approached my cousin, leaned down to his eye level and poked him in the forehead, "What Mikey and Draken mean is that's how you'll be called from now on, Michi ," I said, standing up to go and see how his friends were doing.

I wanted a full report of this Fighting Club, using it as an excuse to ignore the fact that Mikey was going to make my cousin stick around.

There was no room for him to refuse, that's just how things were when it came to the Commander of Toman.

"M-Mire-nee!"

"Are you really in middle school?" I heard Mikey asking. "From now on, Takemichy - you're my pal, 'Kay? " I ignored the flinch of my heart at Mikey's words.

Maybe Mitsuya was right after all, that having Michi around would make it easier for me…that I wouldn't have to hide things from my cousin anymore, and we could hang out like we used to. Ever since Toman was founded, ever since I became involved with the gangs, I never knew how to properly talk to Michi without letting the truth slip. I'd promised my parents that I'd keep both Masaru and Michi out of it…and here we are, with me having splendidly failed in that promise.

However, was I going to explain that shit to them?

"Are you the one organising these matches?" Mikey asked from Kiyomasa, watching around the crowd, taking note of me going around and asking the names of the idiots involved with it. I'd pulled out a notebook and a pen, writing down their names, school and class.

Draken called my name, beckoning me over. I'd gotten enough, but not without me telling Akkun and others that they were no longer Kiyomasa's slaves nor involved with Toman if that's what they wanted.

I ignored the sight of Mikey beating up Kiyomasa, demanding to know who the hell did he think he was to do something like this, showing the Vice-Leader my notes and who here was a member of Tokyo Manji Gang, and who had been dragged to this shit show.

"Okay," Mikey said, catching our attention. "Let's go, Kenchin, Umi-chan," he turned to us with a smile, there was blood on his cheeks from beating the shit out of Kiyomasa. "Fighting rings are stupid."

"Don't ruin Toman's reputation," Draken added, glaring at the crowd.

I waved the notebook in my hand, "Everyone, who got their names written on this notebook can consider themselves kicked from Toman!" I called out, making eye contact with Kiyomasa, who was on the ground, before calling out the main group in charge of this shit. I sent the list of the members, who were kicked from Toman to Pah and Peh-yan, notifying them of the situation since it was their division fucking things up. "Be grateful it's only the idiot over there, who got their ass handed to them."

"Takemitchy! See ya! " Mikey turned to look back at my cousin, who'd stood up. The three of us turned around, getting ready to leave, when I gave my cousin a wink and a wave. He stared at us, unable to say anything.

"Quit staring and disperse already, you idiots," Draken waved the stunned crowd off.

卍…

"So, that was your cousin, huh, Sumire?" Draken asked the moment we'd left the guys behind, resting his hand on my shoulder. The sudden force made me stumble a bit, his weight nearly pushed me forward.

"Mh?" Mikey glanced at me, before grinning as I shoved the tall giant off of me.

"He's talking about Takemitchy," I told to Mikey, snickering at the lame nickname he'd given my cousin. "...You've got a shitty naming sense as ever, Mikey-chann ," I added, knowing how much he disliked being called like that, making Draken laugh and Mikey pout.

"I do not! And don't call me that!"

"Yeah, you do," both Draken and I said in chorus, thinking back to the day Toman was formed, the consensual agreement that Mikey's chosen name was lame.

"You bastards!" Mikey grumbled under his breath.

"But still, is he really your cousin, Sumire?" Draken inquired, scratching the back of his head. Draken's known me far longer than Mikey has, making it easier for him to understand the differences between me and Michi. "The only resemblance I saw was your eyes."

I shrugged, "You've met my brother, right?" I referred to that one time when Draken, Mikey and Mitsuya had picked me up from my home, and had run into both my brother and dad. And then the time when Draken and Mikey barged into my house, all panicked when I wasn't picking up my phone, thinking that something had happened. Only to discover I was grounded and in the middle of a family dinner.

The two nodded, "Apparently, we got our looks from my dad and his mom since they're siblings. When we were younger, I used to joke that Michi was my real brother, instead of Masaru."

"...Takemitchy does look like he's more guts than your brother," Draken commented, chuckling when he remembered how scared my brother had looked upon realising who they were. Whenever Masaru came up in our chats, we liked to joke about the time he wet himself (not that I knew for sure if he did or didn't).

Mikey nodded, "There aren't many, who would refuse to back down when facing an opponent much stronger than they are," he said, referring to Michi challenging Kiyomasa despite knowing he would lose. "I can respect that in a person."

I sighed, "I had wanted to keep him out of gang life," I admitted, quietly, staring up at the darkening sky. "I wanted him to enjoy living a peaceful life without having to look over his shoulder, without facing the same burden we do."

A small silence fell at my words until Draken sighed. He ruffled my dirty blond hair, which was pulled into a ponytail, blatantly ignoring my protests. "If he's anything like you, Sumire, he'll be fine."

"Kenchin's right, plus it's gonna be fun to see what he's made of," Mike grinned, joining Draken in on messing up my hair even more.

Later on that night, I lay on my bed, texting Mitsuya the events of what had transpired today and notifying him how Michi had caught Mikey's interest. I hadn't seen my brother, making me scowl at his door before I slammed my bedroom door closed.

Masaru seemed to have heard about what went down and that he was in for it, somehow he'd managed to avoid me. It's not like the dumbass didn't know the consequences for letting Michi, and his friends, to challenge Kiyomasa while thinking he was the boss. So much for him wanting to pretend to be a hot-shot figure, when I exactly how bad of a fighter he was.

Out of the two of us, my brother's always been a bit of a wimp. The only time, he tried to show off was when we were kids and he was able to chase away some bullies, who thought it was cool to pick on a pair of kids. Since then, he tried to pretend to be strong, but I wasn't fooled. Unlike Michi, I lived with him and could see my brother for who he was.

When I was six, I met Mitsuya in a park. I'd separated from my cousin and brother, not liking the way Masaru kept picking on Michi for his tendency to cry so much. And ever since then, we'd been practically inseparable. That was also the year I started to attend Sano Dojo and the year when I met the people important to me.

"I'm at my wits end with him," I admitted to Mitsuya, running a hand down my face. "It's not like either Michi or Masaru talks to me about this kind of stuff, ya know?"

On Mitsuya's end, there was a sound of something scuffling and two familiar voices protesting against something he told them. I glanced at the phone, wondering if he'd managed to get his sisters to bed in time or if he was still having some difficulties as he told me before.

"It's a guy thing," Mitsuya managed to say, making me roll my eyes. "They'll come to you when they're ready."

I sighed, "When they're beaten up to a pulp and laying in the hospital bed, ya mean?"

Mitsuya chuckled, "You said that Mikey took an interest in your cousin, didn't he?" I hummed in confirmation. "Then don't worry too much, he'll be fine. He'll have us watching his back until Mikey says otherwise."

There was another sound of running and a squeal when Luna was apparently picked up by disgruntled Mitsuya. I could just about imagine my best friend's face, one that was on the thin line of snapping.

"Ya good there, Mitsuya? Need me to lend you a hand with them?" I asked over Luna's protests in telling him to put her down while glancing at the clock on my nightstand.

It wasn't too late, just barely past eleven at night.

I could sneak out by the window, wouldn't be the first time nor the last.

"Nah," Mitsuya denied, his voice briefly disappearing on me before it got steady again. "It's late and we've got school tomorrow, plus I don't want you to get in trouble."

"I wouldn't mind it," I said, absently playing with a stray lock of my hair. "Plus our parents know where I'd be."

Over the years, it had become a long-time tradition for one of us to spend the night at the other's. Most of the time, I spent it at Mitsuya's. I helped him out with the girls, and watched him learn how to cook and do some sewing while I distracted Luna and Mana long enough. His mother had joked about how we'd end up getting married if we carried this on, jokingly telling the girls to call me 'nee-chan' which they did.

To this day.

My dad hadn't been happy when he first met Mitsuya, or when he first spent the night over at us. But had warmed to him, when he learned Mitsuya's interest in fashion and bikes. My dad was a closeted bike fanatic, often stopping to admire Mitsuya's Impala or even Mikey's CB250T whenever they stopped by to pick me up. My mom would snort at his not-so-subtle behaviour, mumbling something about guys and their bikes.

"Aren't you already on a thin line for skipping out on school today?"

"Nah, that's for almost failing a class." I lied, thankful he couldn't see my face, nervously biting my hair.

Mitsuya chuckled, "Sorry, I gotta go and put the girls to bed." He said, mumbling something about girls and their pride. "I'll come by and pick you up tomorrow, Sumire."

"The same time as always?"

"At least get up a bit earlier, you almost made us late the last time."

"It happened once!"

"More than once, you mean."

I groaned, "I'll need to re-stock Dorayaki since Mikey ate them all today.

"Sure, good night, Sumire. Sleep well."

"Mhmh, you too Mitsuya. Love ya ."

There was a sound of Luna trying to let Mitsuya give the phone to her, before he replied, "Love you too, Sumire. Sleep well ."
