Chapter 04: Sumire

I couldn't sleep that night.

Sure, I'd often told Mitsuya I love him, he's precious to me and all that but something about his tone got me all worked up. All sorts of scenarios ran through my mind, heating up my cheeks and making me slap them to shove such unsavoury thoughts out of my mind.

It's not like we haven't kissed before, we have.

The kiss happened a few months ago and was yet to be addressed, even more so since it was initiated by Mitsuya himself during our last sleepover. I don't remember saying or doing anything other than blushing and having lost my ability to talk, watching Mitsuya walk away with that smug look. I can't even remember what had caused him to do it.

It had caused some awkwardness in our …friendship? Relationship? That even Draken noticed and after a bit of interrogation, he forced me to admit what happened. The dumbass had laughed so much that his stomach hurt at it, calling me an idiot. It ended up with me chasing the asshole down, a heavy dictionary book in one hand and a slipper in another. I don't know what he and Mitsuya talked about, but somehow, we'd returned to how we were prior to the kiss.

At least on the surface, mostly to satisfy Draken.

Since the kiss, I'd been spending more time hanging out with either Emma or Yuzuha, depending on which one was free and available. I'd also started to re-visit my old gym, punching away my frustrations and refusing to tell anyone where I disappeared. And I spent a lot of time hanging out with both Mikey and Draken, constantly ignoring the knowing look I got from the Vice-Leader.

Okay, so I was, maybe, avoiding being alone with Mitsuya for longer than it was absolutely necessary. He'd noticed it and I could see him becoming frustrated with me.

"Sumire, get up," my mom called in the hallway, opening my door and peeking in. Her face went blank upon seeing me with my face planted on my desk, and how I was repeatedly banging my head on it. "Is it going to be Mitsuya-kun, who picks you up today? Or Baji-kun and Matsuno-kun? Also, stop hitting your head, honey, you'll lose whatever brain cells you've got left."

"Moooooooom," I whined, turning to stare at her. "Mitsuya's picking me up, we need to drop by a shop to buy more Dorayaki since Mikey got into my bag."

She chuckled, walking in to grab the basket of my dirty clothes, passing past me, she ruffled my hair making me whine. "How did he get into your bag?"

I shrugged, "It's Mikey, he's like a sniffer dog - knows exactly where I've hidden my stacks."

"Good thing Mitsuya-kun's here then," she grinned at her, blinking when I groaned. "Now get to moving, grab some breakfast if you want to make it to school in time."

"Has Masaru already left?" I asked, remembering my promise to talk with the little shit. My mom nodded, adding he'd left a few minutes ago, before exiting my room. Damn it, that slippery fool.

卍…

I stood outside the gates, waiting for Mitsuya to show up with his Impala, scrolling through my text messages. Draken had asked me if I wanted to come with him and Mikey to pick up Michi, saying how Mikey wanted to hang out with my cousin. I stared at the screen a bit, before denying his invitation, telling him that I was going to hang out with Mitsuya after school.

Or if he was busy, I'd go to the gym. Not that they'd need to know that tidbit.

It didn't take long for Mitsuya to show up, an involuntary smile crept on my lips as I looked up from my phone to see him approaching me. I could recognize his Impala from anywhere, same with Mikey's CB250T.

"Yo, you're awake earlier than I thought," Mitsuya said, stopping the bike right before me, his lavender eyes looking me up and down. I didn't know what he was searching for, a sign of distress?

I snorted, "Yeah, I said I would be on time. Didn't I?"

He raised his hands in mock surrender, "I was only joking, Sumire." I made an attempt to whack him which he easily dodged. Mitsuya's hand stopped my wrist, grinning lightly. "Did you sleep well?"

I pulled my hand away, looking slightly sheepish, "Somewhat, you? Were the girls alright?"

I felt his lavender eyes on mine, frowning when he saw the small bags under my eyes. "Yeah, my mom dropped them off before she headed to work."

"Good," I curtly nodded, inwardly cursing Draken for whatever chat he had with Mitsuya. Or Emma for making me realise things about Mitsuya. Things I didn't notice about Mikey and others. But with Mitsuya? It had always been different, I remembered the day I first met Mikey.

The way Mikey had claimed me as his only to be turned down. I faintly remember Mitsuya's stony face, and Draken's wide eyes, Baji and Tora choking on their drinks, Pah gawking at us before I told them that I was already tied down to a promise I made with Mitsuya. A silly promise we made as kids, not that they had to know what exactly it contained.

Mikey looked surprised, before muttering how he had the same shit luck with his brother, Shinichiro, and asked me to stay with him as a best friend. I agreed with a chuckle, winking at suddenly blushing Mitsuya. That day had ended with the boys making fun of us, jokingly calling me 'ane-san'.

"Say, Sumire, you free after school?" Mitsuya suddenly asked, watching as I put on my helmet, startling me out of memories.

I blinked, and nodded, "Yeah, I'm free. Why?"

Mitsuya nodded, he scratched his cheek, "Let's go somewhere, just the two of us."

I blushed, "Sure," I climbed on the bike, wrapping my hands around Mitsuya's waist, feeling the erratic beat of my heart.

"I'll text you details," my face felt hot, and I used his back to hide myself in his jacket. The scent of Mitsuya's cologne hit my nose, including the scent of various different fabrics, I knew to lay in his room.

I don't know whose heart beat faster, mine or his, and that made me weirdly happy. Damn you, Emma. Damn you, Draken.

Mitsuya took my silence as confirmation and the engine switched to life.

We didn't make it to the shop to buy more Dorayaki but agreed to do that after school. Mitsuya dropped me off at my school, ignoring the looks we got from my classmates, and after he gave me a quick hug, he took off to his own school.

Somehow, I managed to walk to my classroom, despite my body being as stiff as a stick. The sight had made Ryusei laugh like a mad dog, and Chifuyu's eyes nearly bulged out when he saw me. Baji had paused in his steps, blinking at me before he shook his head and took off to his class.

"So, I was right after all," Ryusei said, hands on his back, walking with me to the lockers. He cheerfully greeted a few of his classmates and winked at the girls, who were blatantly staring at him. "Mitsuya's the reason behind your irritation."

"I don't know what you're talking about," I instantly denied, pretending to read my day planner, not liking the tone in his voice. I damned Baji for finding an annoying lot like both Ryusei and Chifuyu to join his division.

Ryusei seemed to have a knack for wherever I was frustrated, and whenever I was lying to them. At least with Chifuyu, I could distract the Baji-obsessed kid with manga or show him pictures of a cat I saw in the park.

"Sure, you don't," he snorted, staring at Chifuyu's messy hair when the kid approached us. "Hahahahahaha! What's with the hair, Chifuyu?"

The First division's Vice-Leader scowled, looking as though he wanted to kick the laughing idiot, "I slept in, didn't have time to work on it."

"Ya stayed up and read manga, again?" I asked, walking the boys to their lockers, grinning at the blond.

Chifuyu grinned, "Yeah, I finished the volume - it was incredible!"

"Huhuh," Ryusei said, glancing at me with a knowing look. "Don't think you're off the hook, Sumire-san."

I nearly paused, hand flinching at the invisible threat in his words. Chifuyu's green eyes glanced between us, "Huh? What's going on?"

"Nothing at all!"

"She was being all weirdly awkward with Mitsuya when he dropped her off," Ryusei replied, fully enjoying the show. "Probably also why she's been avoiding him, and others."

"I haven't avoided them."

"Huh? Even Baji-san said you've been weird, Ane-san," my heart felt stabbed at Chifuyu's innocent betrayal. "Said the guys have started to take notice."

My fingers clutched Chifuyu's ear, pulling him a bit, making him yelp in pain, "What have I told you about calling me Ane-san? Mh? Chi-fu-yu?"

"Sor-sorry! Sorry! It's a force of habit!" Chifuyu attempted to unlock my fingers on his ear. "Ryusei, you bastard, stop laughing and help me!"

"Nop, this is fun !"

In the end, Chifuyu was saved by the bell ringing. With his hand on aching ear, he sulked off to his class, and Ryusei, who was still laughing, followed him.
