That seemed to be all that was cluttered around on this beach front: sand, pebbles, and larger stones. Pyrrha, Penny, and Yang had split off from their two other team members and had landed themselves on the coastal shores of this small island. They had separated further by having Penny go off alone while the other two stuck together. The sands and the waters shone brightly from the overcasting sun, allowing the three to define the land with their eyes. It was a shame that the people that once populated this place had disappeared. Even remnants of old structures remained: mud bricks along a dirt path leading into the forest, old wooden shakes that had long since collapsed, and even a sunken ship in the deeper parts of the coast.
"It really is surreal," Pyrrha would comment as they moved closer to a small line of houses. "All of these people…vanish without a trace…allowing nature to take back and build over everything they built."
"Maybe they just moved on?" Yang would reply back, offering an explanation for why the Amosian Isles were abandoned. The tall redhead seemed to ponder on it…
"No…that doesn't seem right. Wouldn't we have seen them in kingdoms and around the continents?" She eventually retorted back.
"Hm. Maybe they're just super stealthy nomads? Unofficial huntsmen working to secure towns outside the kingdoms?"
"That…also doesn't seem right…"
"C'mon Pyrrha- they can't just up and disappear! There's gotta be more avian Faunus on Remnant somewhere!"
The Mistrailian woman stayed silent from there as they began to walk past the line of accommodations that were once built here. There were four in a row, only one of them still standing despite the damage done to it. Broken windows, a smashed-in door- even torch marks on the walls and roof.
Both Pyrrha and Yang nodded at each other and began to approach the building, the blonde planting a foot onto the first wooden step- only to have it snap in half and crumble around her. This caused her to trip and nearly fall onto the other steps, which also proceeded to splinter apart or simply come loose and fall to the sandy ground beneath it. Pyrrha stood back in shock with a small gasp before letting out a bit of a laugh. Yang seemed to join in with her before getting her foot untangled from the wooden mess. The crimson-haired warrior stepped forward and helped Yang up to her feet before boosting her up onto the porch landing, being pulled up by the blonde soon after.
The interior was as wrecked as the outside: decaying floorboards and carpet, destroyed furniture and pottery, shattered windows and the door barely on its hinges. Plants and fungi had begun to creep in, showing that nature was slowly taking back what these people had made.
Yang stepped inside and began looking around, checking under tables and in small cabinets to find anything. That was when she dropped the question. "Something eating at you, Pyrrha?"
The Mistralian took a moment to find her words before responding, having to think about how to phrase her words. "I…I believe in the concept of 'seeing is believing'. And while I'm more than happy to meet Penny for the first time, I am…still uncertain if she is ready for our kind of work."
Yang perked up when Pyrrha spoke, making sure to divert her attention solely to her. "That makes sense. You wanna see them protect themselves, not just hear about it second-hand. Even so, you did trust us when we say Penny kicks some serious ass?"
"I do, but- …I just feel safer knowing she'll be safe when I see her fight."
"Mmm….then maybe you two should spar together sometime. Or even watch her fight Grimm while we're here. I promise you: you'll be very impressed."
The crimson-haired woman smiled widely, a little bit of sadness and hope in her emerald-green eyes. "Thank you, Yang."
"Any time, Pyrrha," said the blonde, giving back an encouraging smile before moving back to searching the nearby cabinets. She found a set of small double doors near the foot of the house, possibly a storage area connected to the house. Yang tugged on the handle but the slab didn't budge, even with a good pull. "Hey, could you-"
"Alright, give it here." Pyrrha replied with a laugh, walking over next to her partner and used her semblance on the door itself. There was metal fused inside the wood, thus making it heavier and much harder to move. But with the power the warrior had, it was heaved up quicker- especially so with the aid from the blonde. They looked inside and found….nothing. Again.
Before either party could comment on it, they heard a tree collapse nearby. Which shifted their attention to the windows, looking out to the forest nearby.
"You think Ruby is alright?" Yang would ask Pyrrha, a look of subtle worry on her face.
The redhead nodded in response. "We probably should rendezvous with them."
Back with the rose-tinted huntress, her and Lance had just begun ripping and tearing through the hoard of Grimm that surrounded them. Ruby had slammed her scythe into the ground and used her rifle extension to fire upon the pack moving towards her. Lance, instead, lunged opposite of Ruby's front and dove directly into a Beowulf coming towards him. His dagger had plunged into its chest upon impact as it was knocked over from the force of the impact. The Beowulf attempted a swipe at the huntsman atop itself but was delayed by a second dagger slicing its neck open. As it evaporated, the plunged dagger was thrown at another Grimm charging towards Ruby. The small blade pierced into the creature's eye, making it howl in pain and skid itself on the grass. Lance continued to fight the other Grimm around him like he had before: acrobatic to evade, martial arts to combat, and his weaponry skills to slay. Each Grimm around him fell with ease, others taking quite a far bit of damage before being felled all the same.
With Ruby, her own skills were being put to the test. After taking potshots at the Grimm pursuing her, she would pull Crescent Rose from the ground and twirl around to slash a Beowulf coming from her left side. From there, she'd continue to spin and swipe with her scythe. Each hit seamlessly landed, cutting through the pitch-black bodies like a hot knife through butter. She even connected rifle shots with some of her kills, managing to kill two or more Grimm in a single strike. Cutting heads, slicing abdomens, tearing off limbs- Ruby Rose was ruthless when it came to slaughtering soulless beasts. Once she decapitated the last wolf beast with a well-placed slash, she reverted her weapon back to its rifle mode and scoped out where her partner was.
Lance was continuing to slash through his own hoard of Grimm, narrowly avoiding some of the clawing attempts from hitting him. Strangely enough, upon observation, his aura didn't seem to flare up as a preventative measure to being damaged. The rose-tinted huntress decided against questioning it further and simply fired upon the other members of the pack in order to free up some space for her teammate. Lance performed one more stab into his target's chest before it dissolved into dust.
The winged huntsman was left panting, visibly sweating from the amount of work he just put into killing these creatures. He sheathed both his daggers, standing up straight as he calmed his breaths. "Nicely done, miss Rose. You certainly have proven your worth to me."
"Ah, well- heh- I guess that's what happens when you have one of the best huntsmen teaching you at the basic academy," Ruby would respond, a very light blush coming across her cheeks as she swaddles her weapon.
This comment made Lance raise an eyebrow and tilt his head. "Wait, who-"
Before he could properly reply in full, a scream could be heard blaring from the forest. Both teammates turned with their weapons drawn.
"Someone's in trouble!"
"Shit! Did Penny-"
Once again being cut off, the distinct roar of an Ursa cut through his words. A very chaotic and loud rustling from the treeline was heard shortly after, a towering pitch-black bear with loads of boney-white protrusions coming off of its back emerged. It appeared to be alone, having possibly scared off the other hoards of Grimm. Lance now moved closer to Ruby, making sure to inform her on what kind of Grimm it was. "It's an Ursa Major, Ruby- we don't need to worry about any other Grimm showing up for a while."
"You can tell just by looking at it?!" Ruby postulated, taken aback by how Lance could just assume it was.
"I'll explain later, just hold onto me." Lance responded quickly, grabbing Ruby by the waist and pushing off the ground with his wings. He made a tight turn, picking up speed as he flew in a circle. The raven-haired huntress, picking up the signs of what Lance might have been planning, used her semblance to speed them both up in a flurry of rose petals. She stopped short once their turning got considerably tighter, building up enough speed to launch herself towards the Grimm. She spun in like a buzzsaw with Crescent Rose fully unleashed, shredding through the Ursa Major's arm like it was nothing. And she couldn't fully stop herself, going further into the forest and cutting down multiple trees as she went. The slashing and crashing of the trees along with the Grimm roaring in pain shot far into the air and outside of the forest.
Lance didn't stay idle, though. He had regained his composure using a flash of his aura and charged at the weakened Ursa with his daggers. His blades cut across its large belly, roars and pained sobs coming from the beast. The huntsman then lowered his stance and brought a strong upper-knee to the Grimm's jaw, sending it flying upwards and flipping backwards. It was fully upside down with its belly facing towards the line of ruined forest trees, Crescent Rose flying like a saw blade flying the wreckage and stabbing the Ursa in the chest. Ruby came flying in using her semblance shortly after, grabbing ahold of her weapon before pulling the trigger. The blast from inside the Grimm splattered its fur and shattered its lower spine, sending parts of its spiky boney exterior out towards the clearing. And as it came flying down, Lance charged one of his daggers with aura and sliced its blade upwards. The back of the Ursa's neck collided with it, carving through its fur and flesh with ease. The now decapitated beast fell with the rest of its body, fading into dust like the other creatures.
The clearing was mostly silent now, no longer filled with the grunts, cries, and gunfire that filled it mere moments ago. It was now filled with the faint sound of hissing as the Grimm bodies disappeared and the shaking pants of both Ruby and Lance as they stood victorious over their adversaries. The boney spikes that had shot out from the Ursa's back had landed all across the clearing.
Ruby, still somewhat out of breath, was the first to give out the first shout of victory. "THAT WAS AWESOME!"
"Beautifully done, miss Rose!" Lance would say with a hint of laughter in his voice, a very impressed smile dragged across his face. He sheathed his daggers once more, just in time to be tackle-hugged by the young huntress-in-training once more.
"Did you see that?! We just made such a great team attack- us speeding up, you sending me flying, me slicing the guy, then you coming in to set up another attack for me! OH, that was so fun!" Ruby would ramble all in the same breath, the excitement bleeding from each syllable she spoke. Lance could only laugh at how absurd it was that she had this much lung capacity despite being mildly winded from the past few fights.
"And you knew exactly what to do when I grabbed you as well! Didn't even need me to explain!" The feathered Faunus replied in sync, the smile on his face showing just how his appreciation for Ruby had come forth.
"Speed is kind of my thing," Ruby said back in agreement, making both of them laugh as they let go of each other and started to move back into the clearing.
"RUBY!" Called out a voice from the forest line again, the two turning to look at whomever approached. Ruby was the first to react and dashed to the duo entering the clearing and entered the blonde woman's arms.
"Yang!" The ravenette called out, twirling in her half-sister's grasp. The two began to converse on what all just recently happened, the younger of the two siblings exaggerating her movements. Meanwhile, the brilliantly red-haired woman stepped past the duo and instead went to see Lance himself.
"Are you two okay? We came as quick as we could," Pyrrha would ask with a touch of concern, looking her team leader over to see if he had been nicked in any sort of way.
Lance chuckled as he shook his head. "I told you I had it covered. It was just…a few too many for me to handle on my own."
This made Pyrrha crack a smile, adding a bit of laughter to her next sentence. "And did Ruby simply stand and watch?"
"Oh-ho-ho-ho-ho, no! She definitely came in handy with taking out the Grimm. You should've seen us take down that Ursa over there."
Pyrrha would blink twice before turning to her left, seeing the decaying body of the demonic bear. She also looked around to see the boney spikes in the clearing, now realizing what kind of Grimm it was. "…how did you-"
"Ruby and I can elaborate later tonight. I think Penny and I ca-" Lance stopped mid sentence, trying to find the second redhead in his squad. "Uuhhh…where's Penny?"
"She's probably still walking the coast," Yang responded as she approached the other two. Ruby was still excitedly bouncing on her heels, holding back the urge to retell the fight she and Lance had against the Grimm. Now all three sets of eyes were on him again, making him feel that nervousness and paranoia take him over again.
"Uuh- you know what? I'm gonna go find Penny. You guys can…set up camp, or…something." And with a few quick steps backwards, a spin, and a sprint forward- he crouched and leaped off the ground with his wings thrusting down to give him lift. This left the three women on their own for now, all with the instruction to make camp.
And Ruby was the first to jump on that order. "Oh yeah, we were allowed to bring our bags with us! We left them in the landing area!"
"Yeah! We can set up camp and get some food going!" Yang enthusiastically agreed.
"Wouldn't we need to hunt some game here on the island?" Pyrrha would ask, unsure of what they would even cook.
This made the sisters laugh softly. "You'd be surprised what our dad taught us in regards to packing," the golden-haired brawler would then retorted.
"I'll go get our stuff!" And Ruby sped off like a bullet, a flurry of rose petals being left in her wake.
