Summer Grounds Challenge 4b (Writer's Choice) - Bad Girl
Taking in a deep whiff of her tobacco, Korra exhaled a huge puff of smoke as she flicked off the ashes from her cigarette into the provided ashtrays. She stared out the window, watching the bustling city life of Republic City flourish and thrive. A small part of her was enjoying the view but the rest of her was disappointed. She didn't plan to get her hopes up this early in the day but this job had been the best choice of her long and ongoing hunt for a new chance to start fresh.
A reception job at Future Industries.
It was the first good candidate that contacted her back, which was a first, and she was ready to give this interview to her all but the moment they actually read her resume, seeing her criminal record, they pulled back. So, even after the effort she put into getting here, in the middle of the city despite living in the sad outskirts of town, she was basically rejected on the spot.
They shouldn't have called her in the first place if they were going to do this. She took in another deep whiff before staring at her reflection. She swore she cleaned up nice enough not to be that judged in public. Her tattoos were hidden (minus the one on her neck), albeit they were sticking out the top of her collar and the edges of her sleeves. She even wore her most neutral lobe earrings and bar earring. Her hair was even nicely combed and styled at the beginning before she tied it up into a messy wolf tail after being rejected. She took another whiff, a small one this time, before frowning at her reflection.
"Why is my luck so shitty…"
Sighing to herself, she finished the rest of her cigarette before discarding the bud and checking the time to look up the bus schedule.
"Tch… still got like thirty minutes…"
Sighing yet again, she decided to light another cigarette to kill time. It wasn't as if she had anywhere to go let alone afford anything in this side of town. Besides, Korra had to admit, this small smoking area was quite nice. As expected from a company like Future Industries. That's when she took a whiff and heard the door open. Damn. There goes her alone time but right when she turned around, she blinked before noticing a small figure in her peripheral vision. She looked down to make eye contact with a kid.
"Oh, shit—"
Korra quickly turned around, putting out her hardly-touched cigarette in the ashtray while simultaneously blowing out a puff of smoke and fanning it away. She breathed out again for safe measures before flicking the rest of the smoke the best she could before turning again and squatting to be at eye level with the kid.
"Mommy says that's a bad word."
Raising an eyebrow at that, Korra winked at the little boy while putting her hands together apologetically. "Sorry, I'll be more careful from now on. What's your name?"
The little boy stared at Korra with those vibrant light green eyes. "Mommy says I shouldn't give my name to strangers."
Blinking at his response, Korra cracked a smile before laughing. "You have a very smart mommy."
The little boy gave her a big grin.
Korra smiled before offering her hand, "My name is Korra."
He stared at her hand before bringing up his hand to shake hers. He ended up grabbing Korra's index and middle fingers to shake them. "I'm Touji."
"Nice to meet you Touji, what are you doing here alone? Where's your mommy?" Korra asked before looking past him and out into the hallway she came from.
"Mommy's in a meeting." He immediately huffed with a frown. "I got bored so I left."
Humming at that comment, Korra propped her elbow onto her knee before resting her chin on her fist. "Well even if you're bored, you shouldn't leave like that. You'll worry your mom and it's dangerous. What happens if you run into a bad person?"
Touji blinked before tilting his head. "Are you a bad person?" He then stared at Korra's neck, taking in her tattoos.
Humming in deep thought, Korra rubbed her cheek. "Only if you're mean."
That comment made him giggle before he gave her another big grin. "You're funny, I like you!"
Korra grinned back, "Why thank you, what an honor!"
They bumped each other's fists before Touji grabbed hold of Korra's fingers. "Come on let's play!"
That made Korra hesitate. "That's—"
He then gave her the biggest puppy-dog eyes out there. "Pretty pleaseeeeee."
"..." Korra glanced at the clock on the wall before letting out a breath. "Alright, I got about twenty-five minutes. I'm all yours."
"Yay!" He then pulled Korra outside the room, leading her down the hallway. "I wanna show you something!"
"Okay okay! Slow down there buddy, you're gonna trip and fall!"
He actually listened and slowed down a little. "Come on let's hurry hurry!"
As they walked down the hallway, holding onto each other's hands, Korra felt out of place. For one, she was with a little kid, and two, she was the only one underdressed. If someone were to ask Korra, she would say she looked hot but in this professional setting, she looked like an outcast, a rebel, a sore thumb. This was a subtle reminder that she wasn't meant for this elite company.
Eventually, they made it to some remote room, a mini-workshop Korra would say, which was quite nice for what it was. However, one thing Korra noted was that this room seemed more childish, and by childish, more equipped with child-friendly objects. That made a thought run through Korra's brain. Was this kid a child of someone influential in the company? Otherwise, why would there be a room dedicated to kids in a multi-million yuan company?
Touji interrupted her thoughts with an excited cheer. "Look look! Look at what I made!" He led Korra over to a counter top which was perfect for his height, meaning Korra had to hunch over.
"Ohhh, cool. What is it?" Korra leaned in to take a closer look.
"An RC car! I made it!" He then brought it up for Korra to hold.
Korra carefully took it from his hands before grinning. "Whoa, you made this? This is super cool! How fast is it?"
"Super fast!" He exclaimed with pride. "The fastest of my entire class!"
"Really? That's super dope buddy!" Korra then held out her fist which he quickly tapped.
"Oh oh! Can I show you my secret collection too!"
Korra carefully set down his RC car before answering, "Sure."
He quickly dragged Korra across the room but right before he let loose like a wild cannon, someone interrupted them by coming inside without knocking.
"Young Master Touji, your mother is calling for you."
Korra raised an eyebrow. Well, his attitude is weird. Aside from the way he said that phrase, he hadn't knocked on the door prior to entering which was… suspicious. Normally servants or employees would knock first unless they're just disrespecting this kid… right?
"What?" He seemed surprised even though it was technically good news. "But mommy said she wouldn't be done until lunchtime."
Korra glanced at the clock on the wall, there was still a little more than fifteen minutes until noon.
The guy was quick to respond. "She finished the meeting early."
Korra stared at him closely before eyeing him up and down. From what she remembered, the security guards (she assumed that was what he was) at the front all wore the same branded attire yet this guy's shoes were different. He had tall combat boots compared to the standard ones the others had. That made an eyebrow go up before she stood up to her full height. For some reason, an uneasy feeling filled her gut.
"Really?" Touji sounded skeptical as he tilted his head. "Well okay…" he sounded a little disappointed before looking at Korra. "Well, it was nice meeting you Korra! Will I see you around?"
"..." Korra looked back and forth between the two. She then gave him a small grin before rustling his hair and asking, "Maybe kiddo, what did you say your name is again? Your full name so I can come find you when I visit later."
"Touji! Touji Sato."
"Sato," Korra repeated with curiosity. Wasn't Sato the CEO's last name? She shook off her funky assumptions before speaking up. "Cool," she held out her fist again, "Korra Arlook, don't be a stranger if you see me around."
"I won't! Bye-bye Korra!" He gave her a big wave with those innocent, bright eyes of his.
"Bye kiddo," one wave later, Korra excused herself while eyeing the security guard on her way out. Once she was out the door, she turned back around to look at it. "I must be imagining things right…" She scratched the back of her head before shaking it off. "There is no way something dangerous would happen here…" She took a few steps before pausing. "Urgh, what am I doing… It's fine. This place has good security."
Sighing again, Korra shook it off before making her way toward the exit, however, she paused when she turned the first corner. Grumbling to herself, she ended up looking at the time on her phone, noting that she missed her bus before taking a deep breath. "Jesus…" She rubbed her face before turning back around. "He's fine. You're just being paranoid…"
She started making her way back. "Just one peak and then off you go." By the time she was back in the room, they were gone.
"What the… where'd they go…"
She looked around in the hallway, not noticing any particular places they could have gone until she noticed the fire escape door. She then cocked an eyebrow before making her way over there.
"There is no way that…" She pulled the door open before looking down the stairwell and lo and behold, there Touji was, being carried away like a side bag. "Fuck."
Her body twitched into action and she began running down the stairs.
"God dammit."
She jumped down a few steps before pivoting at the corner of the stairwell.
"You gotta be kidding!"
She ended up jumping over the side railing here and there until she was finally close enough within reach. She then shoved her hand into her pocket before pulling out a lighter and quickly throwing it at the kidnapper.
"Hey, asshole! Put the kid down!"
Within that brief moment, he stopped in place, he was nailed right in the face with her lighter before Korra scaled the last railing and jumped down from the floor above. He barely had time to yelp let alone react when Korra rammed into his body with a heavy thud.
"Touji, can you hear me?! You alright?"
"M-Mommy?!" He sounded panicked and scared and that only pissed Korra off.
Korra quickly pulled Touji aside before covering him with her body.
The intruder groaned before getting up with a pained grunt. "Who the fuck are you bitch?"
Korra shot him a glare before commenting, "Watch your language you prick." She then quickly turned around and kneeled before giving him a reassuring smile. "Why don't you go through that door and call for help? I'll teach this bad guy a lesson for doing naughty things."
He was shaking slightly but managed to nod before bolting for the door. Once it clicked close, Korra faced the guy.
"So, who the fuck do you work for to kidnap a kid?"
"That's none of your business you cunt," he cracked his neck before continuing, "You're gonna regret messing with me."
"Who? Me?" She pointed at herself before pointing at him, "Or you?"
He grunted before lunging forward. He quickly threw a punch which Korra smoothly avoided before socking him in the face. That only aggravated him more before they exchanged several blows. Korra dodged a majority of the punches before getting nailed in the face really hard. She ended up sitting out some blood before taunting him.
"Is that all you got?"
He threw himself forward and within seconds, Korra stepped in between his legs, tangling her arms around his body before slamming him on the floor. He fell with a heavy thud and Korra quickly straddled him and clasped her hands together before driving her hands down. She slammed his head against the floor before throwing in a series of punches. By the time he was officially down for the count, Korra's knuckles trickled with some blood.
She spat out some blood again before getting up. "That's what I thought."
Breathing heavily, Korra huffed and puffed to regain her breath. Her body was shaking with adrenaline that when the door clicked open, she immediately assumed it was back up and went for a punch.
"Another one? Fuck—"
Whoever was behind that door was good. They deflected Korra's punch and immediately slammed her against the wall with her arm twisted up against her back.
"Don't move."
Oh. It was a woman.
"Mommy no! Korra's a friend!"
"Touji? I told you to stay away!" Her grip tightened even more and Korra felt like her shoulder would snap.
Mommy? Meaning… "Argh fuck— ow ow ow, I'm innocent, can you please me let go?"
Whoever she was seemed annoyed but complied anyway. She released Korra's arm before immediately ordering people around. "Guards, detain them both for investigation."
"But mommy!"
When Korra turned around, her eyes widened when she had a face to that authoritative voice, because fuck, was Touji's mom hot as hell.
"No buts. You almost got kidnapped in my company so I need to understand what happened." She then eyed Korra like a criminal. "That includes her too and whether or not she is involved, that doesn't explain how she got in here in the first place."
Okay.
Fair.
If Korra was in the same position, she'd probably do the same if her son almost got kidnapped in the company she worked at even if it was strange for him to be there in the first place. Trust no one as they say… So, that's where Korra found herself. In an empty 'investigation room,' on a boring chair, with an ice pack on her face. Whoever was interrogating her was obviously looking at her record which harbored various accounts of assault charges (for good reasons Korra would argue).
It didn't look good.
She wasn't dumb, but hey, she wasn't behind whatever this was. She didn't know who Touji was and barely even met him today for the first time. If they were going to press charges or make a scene, she was sure as hell gonna fight it. Tapping her fingers on the table, Korra switched the hand she was holding the ice pack with. She then slumped down before tapping the table again. Her leg started bouncing up and down and she had to admit, she was growing impatience.
No matter how much experience she has had dealing with authority, it didn't make her any less patient. Korra ended up sighing before leaning back in her chair. "Dammit… I'm hungry…"

"Miss Arlook seemed to have come for an interview although it seems the interviewer had rejected her resume application."
Humming in deep thought, Asami closely watched the surveillance cameras before looking at her head of security. "What are the chances she is involved with the instigator?"
"We are still checking her background but it stands, it seems highly unlikely Miss Sato."
Asami hummed again, before noting Korra in the smoke break room. When her son, Touji, walked in, Korra quickly turned away and put out her cigarette before fanning the smoke away. She then watched the footage of their interactions up until the moment Korra left the room. She seemed hesitant and restless and Asami wondered why Korra chose to go back to the room.
"I'll have to talk with her…"
"Please Miss Sato, leave it to us. There is no need for you to deal with this personally."
She casually dismissed him with her hand. "It is alright, I can handle Miss Arlook myself since my son seems quite infatuated with her… however, I will leave the intruder to you. I believe Chief Beifong should be arriving anytime soon so if you can find anything out until then."
"Yes ma'am," he bowed before making his way.
Asami's eyes trailed off to Korra's profile. She picked up the resume before skimming the pages. "Hmm… assault charges…"

Drumming her fingers on the table, Korra sighed before sitting upright. She crossed her arms and leaned back in the chair before aimlessly staring at the ceiling. "I could seriously use a cheeseburger…"
The door clicked open and right when Korra was about to give them a piece of her mind, she made eye contact with familiar light green eyes.
"Oh, hey Kiddo how you doing?" She then shifted in her chair before staring at him. "You're not hurt are you? Have you eaten or had a snack yet? It's quite late in the day."
Touji walked over before sitting across from Korra. He started swinging his legs back and forth as he started fiddling with his hands and Korra couldn't help but smile at him. "Did you get scolded by your mommy?"
Immediately pouting his lips, he nodded. "Yeah… mommy was mad I left the conference room."
Korra chuckled at that. "Well, she is right, even if…your mom owns the company, it's dangerous to go around alone."
"I wasn't alone! I have my bodyguard when she isn't around!"
Shooting him a look, Korra stared at him without saying anything.
Eventually, Touji cracked. "Okay well… I might have snuck away…"
Shaking her head softly, Korra gave him an understanding smile. "Well, I hope you will take this opportunity to not sneak off anymore. If I wasn't here, that bad man would've taken you somewhere you wouldn't be able to see your mommy anymore." His face fell as he took in those words. "And you wouldn't want to not see your mommy anymore right?" Hell, Korra wanted to see his mommy again.
He quietly shook his head. "No… I want to see Mommy."
"Alright, atta boy. What did we learn today?"
"To not sneak off alone…" He sounded quite dejected but was still an adorable kid nonetheless.
"Good," Korra nodded in approval.
Touji finally looked up before looking at Korra bashfully. Korra noticed and raised an eyebrow before asking, "What's up kiddo?"
He fidged in place before asking, "How are you so cool?!"
Not expecting that comment, Korra laughed. "Cause I'm bad." She then teased him by pulling down her collar and showing more of her tattoos. "See?"
His eyes were practically sparkling as he was awed in admiration before the door clicked in. Korra flinched when she made eye contact with his mom. His mom who was eyeing her exposed tattoos before looking at her son. Shit.
"Touji. What are you doing here?"
Her son quickly froze before slowly turning around. "Uhh…" He shot her a big grin, "I wanted to say thanks?" She shot him this look before he quickly cleared his throat and shot up out of his seat. He then ran over to Korra's side before giving her a hug. "Thank you for saving me!" He squeezed her real good before running for the door but, just before he left, he hugged his mom too. "Love you Mommy!"
Her face softened up and she patted his head. "I love you too."
"Bye!" Touji finally ran out of the room, leaving the two of them alone.
Korra tensed up again as a flat smile landed on her face. This woman was… frankly intimidating and she really didn't want to fuck with her. Well… she did want to fuck her but not in this sense. When this boss lady sat down across from her, she clasped her hands together on the table. She shot Korra this unsettling look as if she was gauging her, sizing her up for whatever punishment she was going to give.
This tactic wasn't something Korra wasn't unfamiliar with. She had sat through enough interrogations to have the perfect poker face, so she just sat there with a small smile, waiting for her to make the first move. Touji's mom ended up sighing before speaking up.
"I read your profile Miss Arlook."
And there it was. Her profile.
Korra shifted in her seat before giving her a courteous smile. "Please, just Korra is fine."
Touji's mom stared at her before correcting herself, "Miss Korra." She paused before continuing, "And I must say, it is quite… intriguing."
Scoffing lightly, Korra shifted in her seat, leaning forward slightly. "Please cut to the chase Missus Sato, I, unfortunately, failed an interview today and missed lunch so I am having quite a shitty day. If you want to press charges, by all means, do send me an email or whatever you have to do but if that is all, I'd like to go home now."
She blinked before staring at Korra. After a second, she straightened in her seat before correcting herself. "It's just 'Miss' by the way and as the CEO of Future Industries, I do not condone the actions you did in my building. If you had a mishap, you could have hurt my son and yourself or even worse."
Korra was about to glare at her when she added an extra comment with a soft smile.
"But as a mother, I am thankful for the help. Thank you for helping my son. From what I've seen, you seem to have a good heart beyond your…" she eyed Korra's appearance, "Naughty appearance."
Naughty? Well, that was a first, and for some reason, that made Korra blush.
"Oh, it's no problem." Korra tried saying to save herself from gay panic and embarrassment. "He's a good kid, as adults we have the responsibility to protect them."
Touji's mom smiled before offering her hand. "Asami. Asami Sato."
Korra eyed her hand before smiling and shaking it back. "Korra, Korra Arlook."
Asami smiled back and they gave each other a firm shake but right when Korra was about to let go, Asami held onto her hand a little longer than comfortable. When they parted, Asami crossed her legs before asking.
"You said you missed lunch, correct?"
Not knowing where this was going, Korra nodded. "Yes?"
"In that case, perhaps you would like to join me and my son for lunch? Think of it as an apology and thanks for this mess and from what I've seen on the camera footage, he seems to like you too."
Oh. A lunch. Was this a lunch date? No that wasn't possible, she said it herself, it was an apology and thanks meal. Nothing more, nothing less. What did she have to lose?
"Sure, sounds perfect."
"Great," Asami uncrossed her legs, grazing Korra's along the way. "Shall we?"
Korra stared at her before suspiciously following her. "Lead the way, Miss Sato."
When Asami was at the door, she turned back and eyed Korra up and down. She then smiled before correcting her again, "Please, just Asami is fine."
Huh. Korra blinked repeatedly before watching her saunter away, swaying those sexy hips side to side. Huh… oh…oh? Was this what she thought it was? No way…hah!
As if… unless?
As Korra followed Asami, little did she know that Asami Sato, the CEO of Future Industries, was very much into bad girls and Korra just about checked off every box on her list. She had a hot and tough-looking exterior, all muscle, and tattoos. She also was misunderstood often thanks to her criminal record but had a heart of gold. That was a hard combo to come across and Asami wasn't about to let Korra go so easily, especially if she was the CEO of the place she was trying to work at. Even if she didn't pass the interview for whatever reason, Asami was sure she could hire Korra for several other positions.
