Anger

Ray is fuming when they find Sasha, or, rather, the shell of her, laying against the tree. He knows it's his fault, only his, no one's, but it was his decision to trust Saguru this one last time.

Saguru! The thought of him makes his blood boil like lava. The man has had his reasons, however... However what, exactly? Nothing can justify stealing the Heart of Light, basically killing someone for it, and giving it to the Choten, giving a green light to the beginning of the apocalypse. Nothing! Or is it really the truth ..?

He decides he will deal with those thoughts later, shoving them deep into his conscience, just like many of them before. The priority for now is trying to console Gabe and thinking of a way of getting back to San Champion - it won't be easy without a gauntlet, but he already has an idea.

Curiosity

He spots a broken pair of googles on the floor, left carelessly - he might have not seen them without speck of green light the glass left, but then again he's known for spotting tiny details and things that might make a difference. He crouches to take the googles into his hands, and once he has them, he starts studying them. The dark leather, cut in a sturdy way, is worn out heavily, but well maintained as well. In fact, he realises after a second, the googles aren't broken - the other glass had only slipped out, or had been taken out on purpose.

Recognition

Ray takes his pendant from under the shirt, and places both objects next to each other. Both glasses, or crystals in fact, have the same distinct shade of green, similar to his mother's irises but not quite, the same round shape and, last but not least, both of them sport identical claw casing.

He sees it clearly - they were once a set.

Realisation

He stops dead in his tracks, everything falling into place at the same time.

The familiarity of the Nature civilization.

His mother's words, loud and clear in his head.

The disappointment far stronger than it should be when he betrayed them, and the strange emptiness every time he saw him go away.

The déjà vu feeling from less than an hour, when he saw his face without Humonculon inside the eye socket. That face... It was familiar because he's seen it so many times before.

The explanation about memories held hostage by the Choten, him being "one of them". He had a master's glove, he felt it in his hands.

Saguru is no longer an enemy or an unpredictable unknown. His name is Ken Okamoto.

His father.

...

Choten made him fight his own son.

Breakdown

His friends are too distracted to notice when he starts to shake uncontrollably, or the way his hands are clutched around the mirror glasses.

It's not every day that someone learns that their father is, in fact, alive, nor that said father involuntarily backstabbed them and by now should have regained his memory. All of it. And is probably already in a dungeon or God knows where else, kept to be mocked and destroyed later.

Ray doesn't know what he should be thinking. He never thought such situation could be possible, hell, the thought of his father being alive after all these years never crossed his mind. All he knew was that his father died some time after he was born, that he was an orphan from a war he never knew about... And now? All has changed. The man he knew only from photographs is alive.

His head is spinning. How is he going to tell his mother? Or grandpa? Is he ever going to share this information with them? No, probably not, DEFINITELY NOT, at least not until he gets around this mess and understands at least some of it. And if he sees Sag-his father again - autocorrection gets easier with each second, honestly, not that it will help for now - how will it go? After all, he betrayed them, with a reason but betrayed them. The conversation won't certainly go like "Hi! I know you're my dad, and I know you've betrayed me, but I don't know what to think about you at this point". He has no idea whatsoever. Also, now that his father definitely recovered his memories, how awful the meeting could go for him? The guilt and shame must be eating him alive.

He starts drowning in his own thoughts.

Resolution

Bob's tail finds its way from distance, bringing Ray back to the reality. The boy realises his giant friend doesn't understand yet what is going through his head (and does his best not to show his anger, bless his trying), he will always have his back. No matter the decision he takes.

The past cannot be changed - it's the universal truth. But one can try to atone for the sins of the past and try to create something new from the ashes, just like one can forgive instead of seeking revenge.

Ray carefully puts both glasses into the front pocket of his vest, and puts himself together. He needs to be strong, for his friends and for himself, but now, he has hope.

He always had.
