SONG OF THE HUNTERS

A Percy Jackson Fanfiction

The Spear of Destiny

CHAPTER 1

INERTIA

Alaska a.k.a. The Land Beyond the Gods, USA

The night is very cold.

The moon shines its light brightly.

Perfect for hunting.

Deep within the woods near the frozen lake lies a cottage, its age is apparent with the cottage's abnormal shape, a lullaby breaks the shivering silence of the night. A beautiful young woman sings a tune at the edge of the frozen lake, her voice is like an alluring siren, her hair was as black as the night, skin so fair that moonlight makes her shine, her eyes were white like the snow, as if she had no soul. She looked ethereal in the whiteness of the moonlit night.

However, her lullaby was interrupted when she heard the crunching of snow. She was not alone.

"The moon is beautiful isn't it?" said the stranger. It was the voice of a young man, his accent was british, he came out of the shadows of the woods sporting a red winter coat, green cargo pants, and black boots, he had a quiver of arrows on his back, a short sword hanging on his side, and two daggers at his back. His hair was of a reddish-auburn color, his skin was a light tan, and his eyes were silvery-gold, glowing like a predator. His face however, was beautiful like Adonis.

"It is…" replied the young woman.

"They say that the strangeness of our world comes alive when the sky is shadowed and the night rises"

"Strange like you?" retorted the stranger.

"Me? Strange? Oh my, it is you good sir who is strange, stalking me alone at night, I am but just a humble young maiden enjoying herself" the young woman smiled and did a curtsy, the stranger stared at her, looked around his surroundings and bluntly replied, "You know I'm here to kill you…right?"

The young woman's smile faded from her face, her eyes shifted from white to pitch black, she tilted her head to the side and she began to twitch.

"Well, well, it seems that the great and infamous Tristan Theron has finally found me" said the woman, whose voice has now taken a darker tone.

"I was not aware my name would have such value for it to reach something like you" replied Tristan, his words laced with a bit of sarcasm.

"Why of course your name is of such high value, who wouldn't want to have the chance to KILL YOU" screeched the monster, the formerly beautiful young woman tore her clothes off, her skin decayed into a ashen gray, her body deformed like a corpse, and her face was… not so beautiful anymore.

"Say your last prayers hunter, for you will now befall before me! BABA YAGA!" the terrifying witch of slavic tradition screamed, lunging at him.

Tristan moved quickly and rolled to the side, dodging Baba Yaga's attack. Tristan took out two silver daggers and took his fighting stance. The two circled each other, waiting for the other to show a weak point. Baba Yaga seemed to have found one on Tristan as she moved too quickly for Tristan to dodge it, she attacked him on his side and threw him onto the frozen lake.

Tristan got up on his knees, clenching his teeth in pain as he retook his stance, his side was gashed but he paid no heed to it. His senses began to be on hyperfocus, in his perspective of everything seemed to slow down a bit, each step and movement of his target was perceived to slow down by frames of images, images of what Baba Yaga's moves was and what her next move might be, Tristan predicted Baba Yaga's next attack and dodged it, he made a counter-attack by slicing her side in return for the wound she gave him.

Baba Yaga ferociously swung her arms at Tristan who continued to dodge and parry her attacks. The witch's patience was beginning to falter and was being replaced with irritation and rage, she then began chanting a spell in russian.

"огонь, огонь, горящий огонь" fire began forming in her hand, Baba Yaga then slammed the palm of her hand into the frozen lake, creating a giant blast of a fireball. Tristan was thrown back once more, landing on his back, Tristan groaned in pain as Baba Yaga slowly walked up to him.

"Бедный мальчик, did you really think you stood a chance against me?" She grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up to his toes, "I will taste your blood!" Baba Yaga bit on Tristan's neck sucking blood from it, but as soon as she tasted first blood, she let go of Tristan, her face contorted into one of disgust, spitting out the blood and coughing.

"*cough* *cough* Какого черта? Your blood, it is stained of divinity *cough*..." She looked at Tristan regaining his feet before coming to a realization.

"You…YOU! You are Half-Blood! A Greek demigod no less! Your blood is poison to my tongue!" She exclaimed, "However, you are not the first half-blood I have faced, but there is something strange about you, oh great hunter… something, unholy…"

Tristan paid no attention to what Baba Yaga said, instead his reply was to pull up his sleeve, where a beautiful silver bracelet was adorned on his wrist, he rubbed it and a mighty recurve bow appeared in his hand. He took an arrow and notched an arrow aimed at Baba Yaga, the arrow glowed brightly as his magic was being infused into the bow and arrow, creating a sonic arrow. He took aim and fired the arrow.

The sonic arrow blasted Baba Yaga straight into the front door of her cottage, where she seemed to disappear on entry. Tristan calmed his magic down and headed straight for the cottage. But suddenly the ground started to shake, the cottage began to grow chicken legs and seemed to come alive.

"Behold, DOOM! Prepare to die hunter, for tonight is your LAST HUNT!" The living cottage began to attack Tristan by stomping where he was, each stomp was avoided by Tristan by keeping his distance from the cottage, Tristan then had a brilliant plan.

Tristan fired several volleys of arrows at the living cottage, provoking it to follow him, The living cottage kept attacking him until Tristan just kept shooting at the ground instead of the cottage. The living cottage looked below to see what he was shooting at, and saw that it was in the middle of the frozen lake and the arrows he had been shooting were explosive arrows. Using its confusion and distraction, Tristan moved to the edge of the lake and armed the arrows to explode, the ice began to break and the cottage sank to the bottom of the lake.

Baba Yaga quickly climbed out of the freezing water of the lake, hanging by the edge of the unbroken layer of ice, she then looked up to see Tristan standing on top of her with his sword pulled out of its sheath.

"Вот дерьмо…" was the last word Baba Yaga said before being beheaded by the hunter.

6 hours later

Anchorage, Alaska, USA

Tristan drove for hours going back to Anchorage after his errand involving Baba Yaga, his wounds from his latest hunt still stings of pain.

Tristan was a mercenary for hire, he moved from the UK to the US not too long ago and found the Guild of Clear-Sighted Mercenaries, an organization founded by ancient mercenaries that can see through the mystical barrier that separates the mortal realm from the divine and magical world, the Mist. Their main purpose is mainly to deal with problems that involve the gods, magic, and monsters and make a living out of it. They mainly consist of clear-sighted mortals who can see through the mist, most of them being younger than 25, but rarely has anyone who is a *magician or a half-blood. Tristan was one of those rarities, when he first entered the guild, many were appalled that a half-blood was joining them, he was the first Greek half-blood to join the guild in 500 years, since the fall of the Byzantine Empire. However, despite his bizarre heritage, at just 19 years old he was respected and well recognized around the guild.

As soon as he found the place he was looking for in Anchorage, he parked his 1980 Cadillac outside the building of his desired destination… the pub. As he entered the bar, all eyes were on him for a brief moment before the pub's customers went back to their personal business. Tristan went to the bartender who welcomed Tristan, "Hey there friend, what can I get ya?"

"Nothing at the moment I'm afraid" Tristan replied.

"Oh, you're British? You came a long way from home then, let me get you something" offered the bartender.

"No need, I'm just here to drop by *Uncle Ned here" the bartender stopped what he was doing and whispered, "*Hammer and tack, I'll open it up for ya" the moment Tristan turned, the bartender said, "Welcome back Mr. Theron" Tristan simply nodded and headed towards the back of the pub.

The bartender discreetly pulled a lever beneath the bar top.

Once Tristan exited to the back, he faced the wall of the back of the establishment, the wall in front of him collapsed into a stairwell leading underground. Tristan walked down the stairwell and entered one of the many hideouts of the infamous Guild of Clear-Sighted Mercenaries. The room was huge, it contained a large billboard where mercenaries can take jobs, a lounge where they could rest, another bar where they could order a drink and eat, and a receptionist at the end of the room. Tristan passed by many well-armed and well-dressed mercenaries who were either looking up the giant billboard of available jobs, chilling at the lounge or simply speaking with fellow mercenaries at the bar.

Tristan reached the end of the room where the receptionist was, the receptionist greeted Tristan upon seeing him.

"Ah Mr. Theron, welcome back to Anchorage, how may I help you?" Tristan simply put a large bag on top of the desk, the bottom of the bag was soaked and leaking what appeared to be blood, he then opened the top of the bag to reveal the head of Baba Yaga.

"Ah, yes, the bounty for Baba Yaga. Wanted for the disappearance of a dozen children and murders for 6 young women. Placed around 5 days, 7 hours, and 38 minutes ago by an unnamed Russian couple living here in Anchorage. I might say, you have outdone yourself this time Mr. Theron" remarked the receptionist.

"Your reward, placed by the client will be… $500,000" Tristan simply nodded and took the check field by the receptionist.

"Enjoy your holiday break, Mr. Theron" Tristan couldn't help but smile. This was his last hunt before his yearly break from hunting monsters all-year. He deserved it after all. Before leaving the hideout, Tristan wanted to get a drink at the bar in the underground hideout.

"Big game?" asked the bartender while cleaning one of the used mugs.

"Yeah, Baba Yaga," replied Tristan.

"Damn, you must have quite the night, didn't ya?" Tristan nodded and asked for a shot of whiskey.

"So, are you finally getting your holiday?" asked the bartender as he poured some whiskey into Tristan's shot glass, "Yeah, it's been a long ass year bruv" Tristan replied as he took a shot of whiskey. Before Tristan left the bar, he noticed a figure in the background, a hooded man, under the hood was dark-curly hair and blue eyes, even in a different form, Tristan recognizes him, just from the blazing hot aura he emits.

Tristan exited the underground hideout and thanked the bartender in the pub as he left the building.

A few days later…

San Francisco, California, USA

Evening had arrived after Tristan took a plane to travel back to San Francisco, his holiday was something he looked forward to every season, it was a time to take a rest from the problems of the world and focus on himself for the time being. He took a cab going to his current home, Hôtel du lac, a 60-storey building in the San Francisco skyline. He entered the building being greeted by staff and took the elevator going to the 60th floor at the penthouse. He entered his home, it was a large room, the fireplace made the room look like it was made in gold, there was a large half-round couch in the middle with a round coffee table, a full round table in the dining room, marble walls, glass stairs, many renaissance styled paintings hanging on the walls, medieval and ancient artifacts on display in glass, and a huge window overlooking the city outside.

Tristan was living in paradise. Until said paradise was interrupted by the mysterious hooded figure from before. However, Tristan simply walked past the figure and slumped on his couch, the figure was appalled by being ignored.

"Uh hello?" said the hooded figure.

"Goodbye" was Tristan's response, muffled by his face buried into the couch.

"Wow, I didn't expect this much disrespect from you"

"Me? Disrespecting you? I'm the one being disrespected here, your very appearance is an insult to my eyes, it's a miracle that the hood is hiding all that ugliness" Tristan harshly replied. The hooded figure gasped dramatically.

"How dare you!" The figure then glowed brightly, changing from his previous form into that of a perfect physique, blonde golden hair, and sky blue eyes. It was the Sun God Apollo, who appeared previously as the form of Lester Papadopoulos.

"I will let you know that I nearly died in that form and was distraught that the scars of my journey as a mortal have simply vanished. Do you know how hard it is to… you… you got me rambling about myself again didn't you?" Apollo may not see it, but Tristan smiled under his buried face.

"Why? Just why?"

"It's for my sick amusement you golden bastard. Now tell me, what the fuck do you want?" Tristan asked rather harshly.

"Hey! Language!"

"I'm 19, killing monsters, and drinking, I can do whatever I want, go fuck yourself" Apollo just rubbed his hand over his face.

"Okay, look, I was just coming over to, you know, check on you…" Apollo said, "...and besides, you're injured" Tristan groaned and sat up straight, he showed his wounds to Apollo who then placed his hands above his wounds. His palm glowed a bright gold and the wounds started to heal rapidly.

Once Tristan was healed, Tristan asked, "Thank you, now that you healed me, is there anything else that you are here for?"

"No"

"Okay then, I would like to be left alone"

"But, I just got here—"

"Please Apollo, just… leave" Apollo looked defeated and was about to leave.

"Look, ever since I got back from being mortal, I was taking my responsibility as a father to my children more seriously now, I just thought that, ever since you came up to me 3 years ago I needed to make sure you stayed safe by not seeing you that much, but now I believed that maybe I needed to take you more seriously now. But I understand if you wanted to be left alone. Goodbye Tristan, and… Merry Christmas" Apollo left with a large golden flash of light before disappearing completely.

Tristan just sighed, he thought he may have been a bit too harsh on Apollo, but what is done is done. He laid there in silence, doing nothing as time ticked by. His eyes began to become heavy and his senses tiring, he began to fall asleep, and as he slept, a raven outside of his window, watching him, as Tristan began to fall into the darkness of sleep.

~~Dream Sequence~~

Tristan suddenly got up, something didn't feel right, he looked around and he confirmed his suspicions, he was not home.

He was in… actually, he doesn't know where he exactly is, he was nowhere he recognized. The sky was a pale blue, the ground was filled with tall grass which reached his waist, based on his environment, it was a steppe.

He walked for a bit, moving through the grass as the wind blew past him, hoping that if he moved from his original position that something might happen. Then suddenly, he spotted something in the distance, it was… a cross? Tristan approached it with caution and moved towards the cross.

When he was at a reasonable distance, he inspected the cross in the middle of nowhere, the cross had dried blood on some of its parts, at the bottom of the cross was a piece of paper nailed on the cross. Tristan approached it and took the paper opening it. It only had one word.

Destroy it

Then all of a sudden, the cross was lit into flames, Tristan backed away quickly as the cross was burning.

Then out of nowhere, there was a wolf at the bottom of the cross, its silhouette was shadowed by the burning cross, the wolf was then attacked by an eagle from the sky, the wolf and eagle fought in front of the burning cross as the fire began to spread onto the grass.

Tristan began to run away from the burning grass until he bumped into a tree that wasn't there earlier, he looked around to see that his environment changed into that of a forest.

The burning cross was still there and the wolf and eagle continued to fight until a large pack of black wolves came, surrounding the eagle and the wolf, the eagle and the wolf stopped their fighting and began to back each other up for a fight against these black wolves.

From the bushes jumped a bear with scars on its body,

a lion falling from the sky in red lightning,

a fox with a ghost following it,

and a black horse coming to life from water.

They came to aid the wolf and the eagle in their fight. Within the forest there was a pack of white wolves watching, the largest of them leaving the scene.

Then the burning cross began to be lifted up from the ground and was now floating up into the air, the cross then transformed itself into a massive burning sword as it reached a high enough height to come down crashing into the earth, destroying everything.

Before the destruction reached Tristan, a dark figure phased into existence in front of him and approached him slowly, it was a female, her voice was low by calming when she spoke these words.

"Awake" was what Tristan heard before he was engulfed in the *flames of peace.

~~End of Dream Sequence~~

Tristan suddenly gasped for air after having that dream. He looked around before looking out his window to see that a raven had just left, he checked his clock and it read 8:38 p.m. That was when the silence was broken by the sudden ringing of a rotary dial phone on the round coffee table in front of the couch. Tristan annoyingly answered the phone where a man's voice spoke through it.

"Hello, is this Tristan Theron the Hunter I'm speaking to?" asked the caller.

"Sorry bruv, I'm on vacation right now" Tristan was about to hang up the call until the caller quickly said, "Wait! Just a moment of your time, it will be worth it" Tristan rolled his eyes and put the phone back into his ear.

"Well?" Tristan asked.

"How willing are you to steal a recently displayed artifact at the Legion of Honor Museum for 500,000,000 US dollars?"

Meanwhile…

Tilden Nature Area, Oakland, California, USA

Deep within the forest at night resides the legendary Hunters of Artemis, an elite group of young warrior maidens who serve the Goddess of the Moon and of the Hunt, Artemis.

The hunters had taken respite within the forest after a long month of hunting. Their tents were in the style of yurt tents. Their camp was busy with some of the much younger hunters either playing with each other or practicing to hone their skills, the much older hunters were busy cooking food for the whole group, making new arrows, and patrolling the edge of their camp.

But among these hunters is not like the others, within the second largest tent in the group resting on her bed was the famed and fearsome Thalia Grace, Daughter of Zeus and Lieutenant of Artemis. And she was drooling. It was looking to be a good night's sleep for Thalia, until Reyna entered her tent.

Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano, Daughter of Bellona and former Praetor of New Rome and Camp Jupiter, now Hunter of Artemis, stealthy held a bucket of water in her arms, some of the younger hunters that were watching her outside the tent.

"Reyna, are you sure this is a good idea?"

"Yes, we tried everything to wake her up, we tried calling her, shouting at her ear, shaking her bed, nothing. Besides, she hates getting wet" the other hunters giggled and watched Reyna intently.

Just as she was at the right distance, threw the water in the bucket and splashed it onto Thalia. Thalia screamed at the top of her lungs as she was soaking wet from Reyna's prank.

"WHAT THE HADES?!" Thalia shouted. She heard laughter coming from the entrance of her tent, Thalia at that moment knew who was the culprit of her situation.

"REYNAAAAA! I'M GONNA SHOVE MY SPEAR UP YOUR ASS SO HARD YOU WILL REGRET THIS" Thalia roared.

Thalia, filled with rage, took out her spear lying on the floor and chased Reyna out of her tent. The younger hunters parted to give Reyna an escape path while Thalia jumped out of her tent, lightning dancing around her skin. Reyna was gaining lead and getting farther away from Thalia until she had a brilliant idea, she stopped running and pulled her arm back to throw her spear at Reyna (without the intention of killing her, of course). The spear went through Reyna's hood and stuck itself on a tree trapping her.

Thalia with pride and amusement skipped to Reyna and placed her arm on the tree forcing Reyna to back up against the bark.

"So, how are we doing this?" Thalia asked as electricity pulsed around her as her face was very close to Reyna's face. Reyna blushed and looked away, that was when Thalia was ordered to stop what she was doing by someone she knew very well.

"Thalia Grace, please stop what you are doing immediately, I asked Reyna to wake you up as I have an important task for you" said the very matron of the Hunters, Artemis, the Goddess of the Moon and Hunt herself, in the form of a child.

"Yes Lady Artemis" Thalia immediately stopped and pulled her spear out of the tree. Artemis nodded and went back to her tent, the largest one in the camp, bearing a crescent moon on top of the entrance.

"Sorry Reyna" Thalia apologized, but Reyna laughed and patted Thalia's back.

"Haha, its okay Thals. Besides, Lady Artemis needs you, something private and of utmost importance" Thalia raised an eyebrow at why Artemis needed her so late at night. She looked at the goddess' tent and, through the power of the mist, saw the magical barrier that keeps the sound inside the barrier, meaning no chance of eavesdropping.

Thalia looked at Reyna, "That important?" she asked after seeing the sound barrier.

"That important" Reyna simply replied.

After a while, Thalia returned to her tent to dry herself from the prank earlier, her tent was filled with lots of memorabilia from her past. On the left side of the tent was her extra clothes that were hanging on strings and a large pile of laundry, she really needs to get them cleaned soon. On the right side was a large assortment of pictures of her, Percy and Annabeth, Grover, and… and her other friends, it was there where her bed is. In the center pole of the tent that keeps it up is where her weapons rest, Aegis, her shield, is leaning against the pole, her celestial bronze daggers and bow are hanging on the pole, a mirror nailed on the pole, and a quiver of arrows placed at the bottom, she placed her spear back to its earlier position. And lastly, the front side of the tent was a large trophy of animal pelts and spoils of war from monsters she killed during her time as a huntress. It was a mess, but hey, it was Thalia's mess, so that makes it home.

Right after she dried herself, she put on a new set of clothes, a black t-shirt with the album cover for Green Day's 'American Idiot', a silver jacket, fingerless gloves, green camo pants, black combat boots, and lastly, her tiara that marks her as the lieutenant of the hunters.

Once ready, she exited her tent and entered Artemis' tent. Once she entered, the first thing that greeted her was a scent of incense, and light smoke from the center of the tent. Even though Thalia had been a member for a few years, she still feels awe when she sees the contents of Artemis' tent. Surrounding the tent were pelts from all the animals significant to Greece, and many of them were animals that have been extinct for sometime, they are used as decoration for the walls of the tent, as well as carpets and furniture, there were displays of monster spoils as well. The center of the tent had a fire pit that lit up giving the space light. On the edges of the tent were incense candles that gave a pleasing smell to whoever entered. On the walls were also weapons used for hunting, such as spears, daggers, some short swords, and lastly, Artemis' iconic silver bow, which sits on a crescent moon-shaped stand.

In the center of the room was the goddess herself.

"Sit sister, we have much to discuss" the goddess told Thalia, she sat down on the animal pelt carpet and made herself comfortable.

"I am sure you are wondering why I needed you now this late at night" Thalia listened intently.

"Recently, we received word that a very powerful artifact was found and brought here in San Francisco, while it may seem like an ordinary object from the ancient days, it is by far too dangerous to be left in mortal hands. Our father, Zeus, had vouched for you to find and deliver this artifact to Olympus as soon as possible" Artemis told Thalia what she is tasked to do. But Thalia had several questions that needed to be answered.

"What is this artifact I'm looking for and why is it that much of a threat to get father this paranoid?" Thalia asked. Since

"The artifact you are looking for is a broken spear, you will know it once you find it. As to why it is a threat, I… I wish I could tell you, but father had ordered us to swear, on the river Styx, to not tell what it is until the quest has been fulfilled and delivered safely to Olympus" Artemis said, apologetically.

Thalia then asked, "When do I leave?"

"Tonight, in the Legion of Honor Museum," Artemis replied. Thalia seemed taken aback when she heard that she needed to leave tonight, but she was determined to fulfill the quest.

"Understood Lady Artemis" Thalia stood and left the tent to gather her things, Artemis looked at Thalia and smiled with pride knowing her lieutenant would not fail this mission.

"Godspeed sister, may Lady Tyche be on your side"

Thalia returned to her tent to gather her weapons and a backpack full of essentials. Once she was sure she was ready, Thalia went out to look for Reyna. She found her tent right next to hers. Thalia called out to her and Reyna stepped out of the tent.

"Yes Thalia?"

"Lady Artemis has ordered me to leave tonight, while I'm gone, I need you to be acting-lieutenant for a while" Reyna nodded and understood Thalia's request.

"Good luck Thalia" Reyna told her.

Thalia left the camp that night and disappeared into the woods, to go to the city of San Francisco.

6 hours later…

Legion of Honor, San Francisco, California, USA

Tristan watched from the trees in a safe distance to observe the pattern of the guards, the Legion of Honor security was heavy and he needed a plan to go in quietly to avoid getting caught or starting a fight. He just wants to get this over with quickly before it can get ugly.

Once Tristan figured out a pathway in, he jumped from the trees and began sprinting towards the east wing wall and climbed it, he was using special shoes that dampened any footsteps he made. He parkoured his way through the rooftop of the building, he had to find the security room to eliminate the security footage. He then used a special device that was fitted into a ring to turn himself invisible for a very short limited amount of time, he spotted one of the higher ranking guards and tailed him whilst being invisible.

Once the guard had reached the security room, Tristan knocked him out by locking his arms around the guards neck, putting him to sleep. Tristan quickly scanned the room to see if there were more guards, thankfully, there was none. He approached the terminal and eliminated the security systems and purged all the security footage and used a lopping clip to hide his tracks and safely tread through the museum.

Tristan then left the security room to search for the artifact in the museum, he was told by his client that the artifact was in the Hall of Antiquities in the lower level. Once he entered the Hall of Antiquities, he found what he was looking for. An old rusty broken spear in a glass display. Why it was in an art museum, is something Tristan will never know.

Tristan slowly approached the spear with caution and pulled out a vial with green acid, he splashed the green acid onto the glass display and it dissolved the glass for him to take the spear with ease. Tristan held the spear in his hand, it was light weight, rusty, and it had a faint aura to it, an aura he hasn't seen since…

Tristan's senses went wild as everything seemed to slow down. His instincts made him step to the side where he saw a bronze spear fly past him, the hostile spear then pierced itself into the white walls of the room.

Tristan turned to the entrance to find out who his attacker was, as he turned, he saw a woman who looked to be around 15 years old, had pixie black hair, and was wearing a tiara on her head. She had a shield on her left arm that bore the image of medusa.

Thalia had arrived at the Legion of Honor and used the power of the mist to "convince" the guards to "take a break", and those who resisted, well, let's just say getting 5,000 volts wasn't a very nice experience. But when Thalia entered the Hall of Antiquities, she found a mysterious stranger taking hold of the artifact he was sent to retrieve and deliver. In order to stop him, Thalia threw her spear at him, but the stranger dodged her attack and turned to her direction. She pulled up her shield to petrify him in fear with her shield's magical properties.

But Trisan stood there defiant, as he took out his daggers and prepared for a fight.

Thalia was shocked to see that this stranger resisted Aegis' magic. He had no fear.

Both looked at each other, both ready for a fight, and both asked the other, "Who are you?"
