Lena felt the air rush out of her when she got the call from Henry Reagan. Her son-in-law was in the hospital after getting shot and things didn't look good. She felt herself get unsteady and had to be helped into a chair by Armin and their chef. Henry said that they didn't know much past that but that he felt that it would be best for them to come and support Eddie, who was really broken up with what was going on. Her and Armin quickly made their way over to the hospital, and were met outside by one of Frank's security detail.
Their hearts broke when they finally laid eyes on their daughter. She was sitting in the corner of the waiting room with Henry Reagan protectively by her side. Her face was blotchy, which told them everything they needed to know. She seemed surprised to see them, but immediately melted into her father's arms when he hugged her.
"Jamie is going to be okay, honey," he whispered gently as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
"I can't lose him, Dad," she said shakily. "I can't. He's everything to me."
Armin nodded as he hugged her tighter, "I know he is. He's a fighter, he's going to pull through."
It was breaking him seeing his daughter like this. She was a grown woman now with her own life but it was taking everything in him to not want to wrap her up and protect her from whatever news was coming her way.
His relationship with Jamie has always been a tricky one. It's gotten better over the last year but he knows that his son-in-law is still a little skeptical of him, which he understands. Jamie is the one who's seen first hand of how his crimes have affected Eddie. What guts him the most is knowing that Jamie has been the one to hold her and dry her tears while she's cried over him. Despite that, he's grateful to have him as a son-in-law. His daughter is happier than he's ever seen her and as a father, that's all he could ever ask for.
Lena sat clutching her daughter's hand as they waited. She wasn't the most demonstrative when it came to emotions but today had really taken her for a loop. She had grown to love Jamie like a son. Their relationship had started out on rough waters but he quickly won her over. He actually had brought her and Eddie closer than they'd been in years. He always checked in with her every week, just to see how she was or if she needed anything. He was truly the dream son-in-law that others wished they had.
"Edit," Lena said gently. "You need to eat or drink something, sweetheart. To keep your energy up."
Eddie shook her head sadly, "I don't have an appetite Mom."
"At least drink something," Armin added from his place on the other side of Eddie. He offered up his water bottle. "I know you're worried about Jamie but you need to take care of yourself too."
Lena nodded and squeezed her daughter's hand, "Knowing him, he would probably be more worried about you than himself right now."
Eddie gave a small smile and nodded as she took Armin's water bottle. She took a long drink. "Thank you," she responded as she handed the bottle back to him.
"With whatever the outcome is today," Armin began. "Your mother and I are here to help you and Jamie. Whatever you need, we're here."
"I know that," Eddie said. "And I really appreciate it. I know Jamie does too." She looked towards the double doors ahead of them. "I wish they would come out and let us know something already. This surgery is taking a lot longer than I expected."
"You heard the doctor when he came out earlier," Armin replied. "It's going to take time to remove the bullet. I'm sure they'll be out sooner than later."
Eddie stood up and went to converse with the Reagans who were scattered around the waiting room. Being with them for the last few hours had really changed their feelings about them. At first, Lena and Armin had certain perception of them due to their status. They were the "high and mighty" of the NYPD and felt like no one could live up or even compare to them. But now, they saw them in a different light. They were a family just like anyone else. They had given their daughter alot of things that they weren't able to. Mainly, a stable family life.
A little while later, the doctor came out and gave them the news they'd all been waiting for. Jamie was out of surgery and was stable. They wouldn't know about any spinal damage until he actually woke up but overall, everything was looking in his favor.
It took some time before he was moved to the ICU but even then, only one person was allowed to see him at a time. Eddie went first, followed by Erin, Henry, and Frank. Lena didn't think she could handle seeing him in that state so she decided to wait and see him until he was moved into a regular room. Armin wanted to see him so a nurse led him over.
He was slightly overwhelmed at all the tubes and monitors connected to his son-in-law. His complexion was paler than he'd ever seen him. The bed seemed to be swallowing him. As a parent, he couldn't fathom what Frank must be going through right now. If it was Eddie in the bed… he didn't know what he'd do.
"Hey Jamie…" he said gently, patting a free spot on his arm. "I don't know if you can hear me but I'm glad you're okay. Today really scared the hell out of all of us. When Lena told me what happened, my heart dropped. I hate that this happened to you but I know you're going to get through it. Seeing my Eddie broken up like she was today… that really hurt. Look… I know you and I haven't always seen eye to eye but today showed me one thing… I saw how much my daughter loves you. I've always known it but seeing it really changes my perspective. I'm proud to have you as a son-in-law. You always have her best interests at heart and I'll always be grateful for that."
The next day, Armin and Lena returned to the hospital to find their son-in-law awake and alert with their daughter at his side. He was weak due to everything he had been through but looked better than they expected. Thankfully, there was no spinal damage done so all of his limbs were intact. He seemed surprised to see his in-laws but happy that they were there.
"We're so glad to see you up," Lena said as she gave him a hug. "You really scared us yesterday."
"I know… I'm sorry," Jamie replied tiredly.
"But we're glad you're okay," Armin added.
"Me too," Jamie said with a slight rasp in his throat. "Thank you for coming to visit. I really appreciate it." He pointed to the chairs. "Do you guys want to sit down?"
Lena shook her head, "No, we aren't staying long. We know you need your rest. We plan to be back tomorrow anyways."
"How do you feel Jamie?" Armin asked.
"Like I got shot," Jamie joked. "Honestly, I don't feel much right now. I just feel really sore… and tired."
"Whatever you need, Armin and I are here to help," Lena said seriously. "I know it's going to be awhile before you can go back to work."
"They said that it'll probably be three weeks or more until he can go back," Eddie informed her parents. "That is if he recovers well and there's no hiccups."
"Well… I think there is something you guys can do for me…" Jamie began.
"Anything," Armin said.
"This is a feat that I haven't been able to accomplish yet but can you try and get your stubborn daughter to go home and rest for awhile? She's only gone home to change but that's about it."
Armin and Lena chuckled. "I couldn't even get her to eat her vegetables when she was little, dear," Lena said. "I don't think she'll listen to us."
"She's right," Eddie replied, crossing her arms over her chest as she flashed a pointed look at her husband. "You're not getting rid of me, Bub."
"Do they have you on a specific diet, Jamie?" Armin asked. "We would love to order you guys some lunch."
Jamie's eye brightened, "That would be great. Thank you. Anything's better than hospital food."
"Besides the jello," Eddie added. "That stuff… I don't know what they put in it but it's delicious."
Jamie shook his head at his wife, "The nurses bring her some all the time now."
Armin smiled, "Well, I'll get the food ordered and they should deliver it here. Eddie will just have to go get it downstairs."
"We'll be back tomorrow," Lena reminded them. "Can we bring you guys anything? Jamie, do you want some of my lasagna? I know how much you love it."
"That would be great, Lena," Jamie replied. "Thank you so much."
Armin and Lena quickly bid their goodbyes to the young couple and started to make their way out of the hospital. Lena was pensive as they waited for their car. She knew that this hospital stay for her son-in-law was going to be quite costly for them and wondered if there was something they could do to ease the financial burden a little bit.
"Armin…" Lena said. "I have an idea."
One month later...
"Babe!" Jamie called out as he walked through the door of the apartment. "Where are you?"
"In the room," she responded.
He quickly rushed over to their bedroom to find Eddie sitting on the bed, folding their clothes. "What's wrong?" she asked. "Where's the fire?"
"Someone paid for it," he let out.
She looked at him confused, "Who paid for what? You need to catch me up, hon."
He held out a paper to her, "Someone paid a majority of my hospital bill."
Eddie's eyes widened as she grabbed the paper from him, "Seriously? Wow. Maybe it's a mistake?"
Jamie shook his head, "No. I called the hospital and they confirmed it. They said that the person who paid it wanted to remain anonymous. We just have five hundred dollars left."
"I wonder who paid it? Maybe your dad? Pop?"
He shrugged, "I have no clue. If they did, they'd never tell."
"Well… that's a relief…" Eddie said simply.
"You're okay with this?" he asked.
"Why wouldn't I be?" she responded. "I think it's great that someone did that for you. You're not okay with it?"
He walked over and joined her on the bed, "I'm fifty-fifty. I'm touched that someone would do that for me but at the same time I hate that someone spent all of their hard earned money on paying my medical bills. There's people out there that deserve it more than me."
Eddie sighed, "Oh Bub." She reached out and rubbed his shoulder. "You deserve this and so much more. You're such a selfless guy and are always thinking of everyone else before yourself. The person who paid for it did it because they see how great of a guy you are. Just take this, Jamie. You deserve it."
He flashed a small smile and nodded, "Okay. But I still wish I knew who it was so I could thank them."
She shrugged, "Maybe one day." She glanced at the pile of clothes that still needed to be folded. "Since you're basically healed now..." She grabbed a handful of clothes and tossed them his way. "Go ahead and get started on these."
Jamie made a face at her, "Okay fine."
She smiled at him as they chatted amongst each other as they finished off the pile of clothes.
I'm sure that I'm not completely accurate with the last part of the story but for the sake of the story, just go with it ;)
