Wanda beat Willy in this years ice fishing competition. Never thought we would see Willy lose, but Wanda worked for it.

No shot, he thought. No shot!

Willy had his guard down. He was the one who taught her to fish and she didn't even have a full year under her belt. How could she compete with this forty? He laughed to himself in empathetic humor as he watched Wanda pull up a clump of green algae. The ice was murkier at that cut in the ice. Wanda hadn't noticed or hadn't thought much about it. What a rookie.

Willy caught four fish and had to release his fifth when the bell rang. He peaked into Elliot's bucket. It chuffed him to see Elliot had only caught one. Pam had only caught two. Yeah, you still got it, Willy thought to himself. He couldn't see Wanda's bucket, but she wore the the disappointment at the corners of her mouth. She was going to be a good sport about it.

Mayor Lewis started to count everyone's fish. He gave Willy an impressed nod. He went to count Wanda's fish.

"Welp!" he laughed, calling attention to the crowd, "I'd like to announce that this years ice fishing champion is Wanda!"

Willy practically choked on his pipe.

Wanda accepted her reward in a daze. The town was ecstatic over the underdog's win. Willy seemed to drift outside of the crowd, but to Wanda he always felt like he was close by. Was he mad at her?

As she was getting ready to leave for the night, Willy came up behind her clapping her back.

"Proof fishing ain't dead," he said.
