The shop in front of her was large, and Kagome looked up at it in awe. The figure beside her kept her hand in his own so she didn't get separated, and he called her attention with a single call of her name.
"Kagome."
She blinked and looked up at him, confusion melting onto her face. "Why are we here?" she asked after a second. They were getting stuff for her first year at Hogwarts, but… "I don't need a wand," she remarked. She could use her magic just fine without one!
Sesshomaru looked at the eleven-year-old miko in his care. "Perhaps not, but it's still a good thing for you to have," he responded. He left no room for argument, and Kagome huffed. Just as she was about to say something else, another person caught her attention.
"Kagome!"
She turned, her hand not leaving Sesshomaru's own, and her blue eyes met a pair of different blue. She recognized him easily, and a smile lifted on her face. "Draco!"
Getting the things she needed for the school year was pushed to the back of her mind at the sight of her friend. Behind him was his father. He glanced at her for a brief moment before looking at the silver-haired man with her.
"How fortunate that Kagome and Draco will be attending Hogwarts together," Lucius Malfoy said. Golden eyes shifted to the man standing opposite of him, and Sesshomaru tilted his head in a slight nod.
"Yes, I suppose it is," he remarked. His tone was disinterested and cold, but it wasn't strange. His tone very rarely ever shifted to anything but. He threaded his other hand through long, silver strands of hair, brushing them back over his shoulder.
Kagome could never tell how he felt about the other man. Whether he actually enjoyed his company or if he merely tolerated him for her sake, she wasn't sure. She wasn't going to ask him about it, either. To her, Draco's father was rather… intimidating. She didn't exactly like him, but he was pleasant to her. She wasn't sure why, but something about him rubbed her the wrong way. She ignored it most of the time whenever she was at the Malfoy manor to visit Draco. His mother was nicer, at least.
"At the very least, I'm certain it'll be easier for her this way," Sesshomaru stated after a pause on his end.
"Not to mention, if she'd gone somewhere else, it might've put a hindrance on the engagement," Lucius continued. Sesshomaru cut his gaze to him at the comment.
"Nothing has been decided yet," he remarked coldly. Kagome looked up at him in confusion.
She knew what the word meant, but…
Why had it been brought up?
She looked to Draco in hopes he might know more than she did, but he only shrugged in the face of her confusion.
"Of course," Lucius responded. "I'm merely considering the future prospects."
"Hn." Sesshomaru made a noise of displeasure, and he tugged Kagome's attention back to him. "Come," he stated. "We have things to do, Kagome."
Kagome blinked owlishly before nodding. She bid a brief farewell to her friend and his father. Her prior complaint about needing a wand was forgotten as he led her into the shop.
The interaction that day had gone on to be forgotten by her. When the day came for her to board the train, she was happy when she managed to find the blonde boy with ease.
"Draco!" Kagome called into the train car as she caught sight of him. Her trunk had already been stored, so she walked in and took the spot beside him. With so many people she didn't know, it felt nice having someone she knew to sit with on the ride to Hogwarts.
Even with others in the train car with them, Draco wore a smug smile when she decided to sit beside him, as opposed to anyone else. A small feline hopped up onto her lap, twin tails twitching in a rhythm. He recognized the cat as her pet, Kirara. It wasn't often she was out of sight of her, so it was no surprise when she showed up with her on the train.
"So, we're really gonna be sorted into houses?" Kagome asked after a moment, hand resting on Kirara's back as she looked up at Draco.
He nodded. "I already know I'm gonna be a Slytherin," he responded, pride in tone. Kagome smiled and glanced down.
"Well, then I want to be one, too," she commented softly.
She wasn't sure where she'd get placed, and it made her stomach twist nervously. What if she got placed somewhere, but no one got along with her? She'd been reassured by her father earlier that everything would be fine either way, but still….
"There's no way you'll go anywhere else," Draco remarked. "You have to go to Slytherin."
Kagome looked at him curiously, a small smile on her face at the hope she felt. "Right."
