Introduction
"Alright, listen up!" My commanding voice cut through the chatter of my hand-picked team of mercenaries. Four sets of eyes locked onto me as I glanced at each of them. "Some unknown asshat has taken over Point Med. Roughly fifty amateurs in heavy armor and heavy weapons killed everyone in the hospital. They kicked the teeth in on the responding LEO's, then three teams of SWAT after that. Now the governor is calling in the National Guard." I explained the situation.
"What do they want boss?" Banks, the biggest guy with dark hair asked.
"Unknown. All attempts at communication have failed. NatGar will take hours to deploy, someone gave the governor my number." I paused to let that sink in. We have been contacted by several politicians before and I had told them to fuck off. Well, there was one time we helped do a rescue when the dude's kids were taken. I'm a nice guy and for sure have no time to take care of the political dirty work. I have my standards after all. "The governor is paying extra for us to get there quick, and he is providing local PD escort." That brought grins all around.
"Local PD escort to a sanctioned and paid job." Kane, a well-built man with ginger hair spoke up in his deep voice. "That's a first. Our lucky day." He added.
"Ya. I like those odds." Zane agreed. The pretty brunette and only girl of the group always wore shades and had a toothpick in her mouth 24/7.
"Boss?" Scar asked rubbing his chin where the scar started and then wrapped around the right side of his face. "Why did they call us in? Something more is up, right?"
I nodded. "Right. The governor said the LEO's that survived spotted a group of six working hard to lug something big through the main entrance. We did have that Nuc go missing. This is our hometown, boys and girls. No one steals a dirty, kills women and children, then uses the dirty as a shield in my hometown. We take them down and investigate. If there is no dirty then we carry on with a good deed done and some extra scratch for our efforts. If there is a dirty, we hang around and turn it over to the NatGar when they decide to show up. Bring extra ammo for load out 7." I paused then took a deep breath. "One last thing. We need to be fast. No armor. It will only slow us down. Kane, bring your baby. Once we breach, we go independent. High score picks the punishment for the three losers when we get back to the crib."
The team assembled their silenced weapons loaded with armor piercing rounds as I kissed the wife and daughter goodbye. As we left, I saw the team glancing at their armor sitting unused. At the car I resisted the urge to whistle when the cherries lit up. A highspeed ride later we were in what looked like a war zone.
Burning cars lined the roads, as did bodies. Barricades blocked the civies and reporters both looking for information on the catastrophe. A few scattered grim faced LEO's kept watch on the various entrance points and got us through with a mere glance. One wounded old-timer in SWAT utilities waved us down. "What do you need from us?" he asked.
I glanced at the battlefield dressing on his arm and put my helmet on activating its HUD. "Just clean up after our mess is all." I replied with a chuckle from my team as we got out. The bark of heavy weapons did not even phase us but sent others running for cover. We grinned knowing we were not in a direct line of sight so there was no danger.
"Comms check." I whispered as we took up positions of concealment. Our scoped custom-made automatic rifles could go into sniper configuration with the flick of a switch. I started scanning for targets of opportunity.
"Z" from Zane
"B" from Banks
"K" from Kane
"S" from Scar
They all quickly reported in, voices just a whisper in my ear. "It is indeed amateur hour. My count is 12 visible from here. We will shoot in two waves. I say one, we shoot. They undoubtedly will pop their heads to see where we are at. Take them down when I say two. After that I will pop smoke then we stealth it up to that alley entrance. Kane will knock to let us in, and we go for the high body count. Shout out if you spot the dirty. Click if ready."
I heard 4 quick clicks on the ear bud. "One" I whispered, and our rifles coughed out softly as we took out target after target. "Wait" I whispered. My heart beating steadily. "Two" I whispered. We took out those dumb enough to look for us. "Popping smoke" I whispered as the smart ones started to fire blindly from cover. "Go. Go. Go." I ordered and we all rushed to the alley.
Kane let his rifle hang by its straps as he pulled his baby over his shoulder. In stride he aimed and blasted the door. There was no hiding the roar of that blast, nor the smoke and fire. What remained of the wall crumbled to the ground in nice little piles we jumped over. We followed the plan and split up, hitting the noobs running in heavy armor easily. They were not stealthy at all.
Banks stayed on the ground floor with Kane. Scar, Zane, and I went up. Quickly and efficiently, we reported kills by number. The kill count helped us know each was ok, but also to help with the estimated opposition count.
I had just dropped my 19th kill when I saw the Nuc. "Dirty on 9. Baby ward. I am going for disarm. Get here for cover. It has a timer. We are at ten minutes now." I whispered.
I got to work, keeping an eye out for lurkers. Zane arrived first. We stood on opposite sides to better cover each other's 6. The other arrived quickly letting Zane and I got into focused work. We got the countdown stopped at 2 minutes.
"Hell ya!" Kane slapped Zane on the back making her jump and the rest of us laugh to relieve the built-up tension.
"Impressive" a voice came over our earbuds. "The probability of your success in this mission was very low. Team Leader Blackriv, you are to be commended."
There was no hesitation, simultaneously we all took off helmets, pulled the earbuds and crushed them under boot heels.
"Most impressive." The same voice echoed in the room as a tall imposing creature appeared above the Nuc, floating in the air. "Coordinated even, better than the last move like that in Panama." The creature added.
"What are you?" I demanded. "No one on this planet knows what we did in Panama. We made sure of that."
The creature blinked its large black eyes and bobbed its large bulbus head. "I represent a race of beings known as Eternals. My designation is Voggaa. You are also correct that no one alive on your planet could know of what you and your team did there in Panama. 8 Drug Lords down in one mission was too good of an opportunity to pass up. As was all their money. However, I am not on your planet. Nor am I in your galaxy."
"Voggaa, Eternal, Talking to us from a different galaxy. Right." I waved a hand through the projected light. "Some kind of emitter must be on top here. Zane, see if you can't figure out where it is."
Zane reached out, then screamed in agony when an electrical current connected to and then through her. She was flung back and smacked into the wall. I hesitated when the others raised their guns.
"Hold!" I used my commanding voice to get through to them.
Voggaa smiled. "Commendable Team Leader. You saved your subordinates." Its eyes moved to where Zane was moaning against the wall. "Zane, or Todraz K. Wollemz as her legal name is listed, is near her expiration. I can heal her."
"Then do it!" I growled.
Voggaa again lifted his palm showing the eyeball. "Patience, for we have not yet struck a bargain."
"Forget it. I do not bargain or negotiate with petty tyrants. I kill them. Even God playing ones like you." I growled with a sneer.
"The alternative is death for you and approximately 1 million others in the blast radius of this device. I have enhanced it myself to instantly vaporize all living matter within a 100-kilometer radius. It is quite efficient." The alien replied.
"We don't even know what you're asking for. You have powers beyond our abilities, what do you even need us for?" I countered after glancing over the others.
"Questions that I will explain in full when you are in my facility. For now, just know that I wish you to agree to a period of servitude. Once you are fulfilling your part, I will correct this timeline. There is no need for this to have ever occurred." The Eternal's voice grew softer.
I looked at each of my friends who nodded. "You are all sure?" I asked to confirm. They nodded again.
I looked back up at Voggaa who merely pointed at one after another. There was a popping sound and then they just simply disappeared. All but me. I glared up at the alien. "What are you waiting for? Take me!" I growled.
"No Evrik Blackriv. I have seen all of your potential futures. Unless you die. Here and now…" the alien looked down and the timer on the device started back up again. "…at the exact moment of your birth 40 years ago. In the exact location I might add. Then the MultiVerse will become unbalanced. You are far too dangerous for me to use. Unlike your friends. Thank you for training them. Die well." He seemed to reach for something.
"You are correct Voggaa. I am dangerous. I will stop at nothing to find you and kill you. Maybe not in the next life, or next 100. But I will find you." I promised.
Voggaa shook his head. "You have a call to make. Do not waste your time." Then he was gone.
I already had my phone in my hand and hit the call button. There was one ring. "Babe, I saw you on TV. Are you ok?" my wife asked in a panic.
My voice was calm as I watched the timer go down. "I just wanted to say I love you. Everything will be ok." I closed my eyes. It was painful to lie to her now. "Kiddo awake?" I asked hopefully.
"No she is down again. Full bellies do that to little ones. God E. What did the hope to do at the hospital?" My wife asked in her shocked voice.
"Just messing up my birthday plans is all. I love you." I repeated calmly as the timer reached zero. Then everything went black.
Authors note:
End of Introduction to Star Wars Multi Verse Issue #1.
It is not very Star Warsie in the intro, but that is ok. We are going to build up to that point folks.
I wished to expand my writing and this challenge was accepted.
Big thanks to USSExplorer for the work of art that is "A New Player In The Force" & "The Gathering Storm" for without those integrating my story would not exist. You are an inspiration.
