I named Andy's mom Ellen since she didn't have one. Honestly this was written for fun during a lunch break. I would expand, but I rather liked it short like this. If anyone else wants to take a stab at expanding go ahead and let me know about it (and credit me obviously lol). This obviously has nothing to do with toy story 4 (never saw it actually) and happy reading!
Tissue paper, pastel wrapping paper, and overturned gift bags littered the light wood floor. The banner in the back said, 'We Can't Wait to Meet You Matthew Tyler Davis' to be framed perfectly in any photos. In the middle of it all sat a very pregnant woman. To her right was her husband, Andy Davis, and to her left was her mother snapping pictures of each gift given to them.
"Now hold the rattles up a little higher Andy. Carly hold both the gift card and the card," said Andy's mother-in-law.
Andy looked at his wife and sighed before grinning for the camera. They were going to send them out with the thank you cards for sending something to the baby shower. Honestly though he was happy to get stuff that he didn't have to pay for, thought Andy with an internal chuckle. Next to him, Carly made a silly face before smiling for the camera.
"Perfect," said Ellen, Andy's mother after she wrote down who it was from and what it was for said thank you cards. "Now I have a special gift for myself. I think you're going to get excited, and I want to see your face as I record this."
"Dun dun dun," said Molly, drumming her hands against the wooden table.
Curiosity got him as Andy sat up straight suddenly interested in the baby shower. Not that he wasn't interested before but he didn't see Molly get this excited over anything gifted to them except for something that caused her to say 'that's cute' or 'aww.' Carly grinned at him, raising her eyebrows as if asking him what was going on.
He shrugged as his mother left the room only to come back moments later. She was lugging a wrapped box with white clouds on sky blue paper. Hey, that used to be his wallpaper for years until he finally outgrew it at twelve or so. The giant box jiggled as his mother placed the box in front of them.
"This is very pretty wrapping paper," said Carly eager to tear into the paper but seemed to think better of it. "Why don't you open it, Andy? Your mom and sister look really excited for you to see what's in here."
Andy took the gift gingerly and as his mom adjusted the camera. It couldn't have been that big that his mother would want to record this and she was just being a little dramatic.
"Okay, one of my friends gave me these back when I asked if she still had them. Apparently, she's the sentimental type and wanted to keep them for her own grandkids. But you know who insisted that you get these back."
You know who, thought Andy, mystified at what would be in that large box and which one of his mothers friends. His mother was really leaning into the element of surprise. She had her camera poised with the gesture to open it. Having fun with his mother, Andy slowly untied the ribbon keeping it closed. Then slowly started tearing it piece by piece.
"Oh come on," said Molly as he saw a Lowes packing box and ripped the tape off.
Staring up at him were his old toys as a chill ran down his spine. Slinky, Buzz, Mr. Mrs. Potato Head, Jessie, the T-Rex… Then he felt around as he pulled out Woody. His hat slightly askew and the golden star twisted a little. This was his dads toy, the one toy that he actually considered bringing to college with him.
He could feel the tears prick at his eyes toying with the string on the back. There's a snake in my boot echoed through his mind as he tipped his head the right way. He could hear Molly tell Carly that Woody was his dad's toy with a small gasp from his wife. He was buried not too long ago back in their hometown.
Somehow holding Woody and all those memories made him feel closer to the man he didn't really remember and the childhood he left behind.
"This is a great gift, I thought Bonnie might have given them away," said Andy wiping his eyes trying not to get too excited as he gripped Woody in his hands and a smile on his face.
"Bonnie figured these might bring your little bundle of joy some joy as well," said his mother, grinning at him. "Now we have another generation of Davis' to keep playing with them."
"You know I regretted giving her all of these once we realized we were pregnant. It just seemed like such a good idea at the time. All my toys could have become his," said Andy. "Just like how Carly's toys are going to be passed on."
"I saw these in pictures," said Carly as she handed him his t-rex. "I think little Matthew is going to love these toys and do so many recreations."
"Alright, miss photographer, good luck getting a six-year-old to pose for a side by side photo," said Molly with a grin to her sister in law. Then turned to her brother with a small laugh. "I still remember you stealing my Bo Peep lamp, it was this big porcelain thing, and using her as Woody's girlfriend."
"Correction damsel for him to save," said Andy with a straight face before laughing. It was hard not to have fun with Mr. Potatohead to Slinky in his lap.
"Whatever, I'm just glad that we could get Woody back. We know he was important to you," said Molly sincerely and turned to Carly. "You know he wanted to bring him to college. Maybe he would have brought him to your first date in that massager bag he used to carry everywhere."
"Molly!"
"I mean I would have found it endearing," said Carly, kissing his cheek. "Now I need to go and break out my toys and fill up that chest."
She gestured to the one that he had personally made himself. He held Woody in his lap and helped Carly pull out the others. Andy wished his toys could talk and tell him about everything they remember or even wonder if they missed him.
