Negan whistled out the signature sound of the Saviors as he walked through the entrance to Hilltop, alerting everyone who hadn't already known he was there to the presence of him and the other Saviors he brought with him. All eyes were suddenly on him and they all showed either fear, contempt, or some mix of both. They were likely wondering what he was doing here as they'd already given their portion of supplies recently. Negan was here for something but it was not an item. Ever since that night he first encountered Rick's group, there was one person in particular on his mind: The widow.
He was entranced by her ever since he laid eyes on her and couldn't get her off his mind, especially knowing that she was now single thanks to him. When Negan had visited Alexandria and asked to see her, Rick and company had tried telling him that she had succumbed to her illness but Negan could sense the lie. He played along with it then but now, a day later, he was here at Hilltop this morning in search of her as he wanted to go through with asking her what he had told Rick he wanted to do: Make her one of his wives.
A man, who Negan thinks he remembers was named Jesus, heard the commotion going on and came out to see what was happening and approached Negan. "What brings you here? We just gave you our share a few days ago," Jesus said, trying to remain calm but fear slipped into his voice.
Negan smirked. "Hey, relax. You're all good. I'm here for something else, actually," he told him.
Jesus looked at him in confusion. "What?"
"The widow."
Jesus' eyes widened in shock. "You want Maggie?"
Negan smiled upon hearing her name. He hadn't learned what it was until now. "Maggie… That's her name, huh? Beautiful." Just like her, he thought but didn't say that part aloud. "But yes, I'm here for her. Where is she?"
"She's not here… She… died," Jesus tried telling him though it was very unconvincing. A rush of anger went through Negan at what he'd said. The fact that he was trying this same lie on him that the pricks at Alexandria did was pissing him off. He wasn't born yesterday, he's been through enough to know a lie when he sees one and they were all definitely lying about Maggie being dead, likely because she wanted to avoid him after what he did.
Negan kept his calm demeanor on the outside though. "Huh… I see. Well, I guess we'll be on our way," he said and turned around as if he was going to leave but then suddenly whipped back around, kicking Jesus in his legs, knocking him to the ground. He laid on his back and Negan pointed his trusty bat Lucille directly at his face, the barbed wire it donned glistening threateningly in the sunlight.
"Now, one of you-" He looked around the crowd that had formed, pointing at all of them. "-better tell me where Maggie is or else I'll bash his head in," he finished his threat. Usually he'd throw a quip in there but he was too eager to get his new wife. Nobody moved or said anything, which pissed him off further. "Fine, have it your way," he said before raising the bat above his head in preparation to strike.
"Stop!" a voice called out suddenly. Negan looked up and saw the source of the voice ahead. Either Maggie had been hiding somewhere he couldn't see or someone had alerted her to what was going on because here she was now, approaching him. There she is… My widow, Negan thought to himself happily.
"I'm here. Leave him alone," she demanded. Negan lowered the bat and pointed at Jesus then somewhere off to the side, indicating that he could get up and go, and he did just that. Negan walked over to stand closer to Maggie. He got a better look at her face, seeing that she seemed better than the last time he saw her. Her lovely short brown hair was more kept, her pretty green eyes were vibrant, and overall she was glowing, unlike that night when she seemed deathly sick. He had already thought she was stunning that first night he saw her but seeing her healthy like this, she was beautiful and Negan couldn't take his eyes off her even if he wanted to.
"What do you want?" she said in an angry tone, snapping him out of his trance.
Negan smiled at her. "Well, hello to you too," he joked but Maggie didn't find it funny, instead staring daggers at him. "Okay then, let me cut right to the chase: I want you to come back to the Sanctuary with me and be one of my wives, darling."
Maggie looked at him as if he'd just grown a second head. "Are you insane? Why the hell would I agree to that? I'd rather die," she snapped at him. Negan's eyes just lit up. Feisty… I like that.
"Because, even though I didn't know him, I still bet I could treat you better than your lousy husband I killed," he teased. Maggie scoffed and gave him a look like she wanted to skin him alive. "Alright, well how about this…" His smile fell and his expression became deathly serious. "If you don't come back with me, I'll have my soldiers kill all of your friends."
Maggie's expression softened slightly and she gulped. She looked him in the eyes to get a sense of if he was bluffing or not and the look he had told her that he meant what he said. For a moment, she looked over all the people watching them and saw the concerned faces of some of the people she cared about. She also thought of all the people at Alexandria who she loved too. She's already lost too many people and she couldn't bear it if someone else got hurt because of her. She cared more about her friends' well-being than she did hers, so reluctantly, she agreed.
"Okay… If you promise not to hurt them, I'll go back with you."
Negan grinned in a predatory manner at getting what he'd wanted. "I promise."
Maggie sat uncomfortably in the back of the truck they had put her in. The floor was hard with no padding and they had tied her hands behind her back and blindfolded her before she even entered the vehicle. Understandable, she thought, as they likely wanted to make sure she couldn't try anything. But not being able to move her arms or see anything was making the fear she already felt worse. She assumed that Negan wasn't going to hurt or kill her since he wants her as a wife but the possibilities of what exactly being a wife entailed had her feeling nervous and sick at some of the things she was envisioning.
The truck slowly came to a stop, breaking Maggie out of her thoughts. After a moment, she heard the back doors to the truck open and someone entered, pulled her to her feet, and guided her outside. Once she was out, the person untied her hands and then pulled the blindfold off her and Maggie blinked a few times, her eyes adjusting to the light. When her vision came into focus, she saw that there was a building in front of her, one that looked like an old factory. It was big, gray, and looming, and the vibe it gave off was eery. The area surrounding it was not much better, with no grass on the ground and walkers chained to a fence that surrounded the building, likely to keep people away. This place looked nothing like the inviting communities she was used to and she knew the inside was likely worse.
"Welcome home," the person, who Maggie now realized was Negan, said in an overly cheery tone. A chill went up her spine at the idea that this place could ever be her home.
Negan had taken Maggie to be checked out by The Sanctuary's doctor before doing anything else just as precaution since he saw how sick she'd been not long ago. Maggie argued against it but Negan insisted as he said that he likes to "take care of his wives," which Maggie found hard to believe. The doctor checked her out and asked all sorts of questions, including if she suspected if she was pregnant or not. Maggie found the whole thing invasive and obnoxious, especially since Negan hadn't bothered to leave the room, but she went along with it and answered the questions and explained to him that she wasn't pregnant and had just come down with some nasty bug and that she was better now. After all his tests, the doctor agreed that she was alright and healthy and released her.
After that, Negan guided Maggie through The Sanctuary with one hand on her back and the other firmly holding onto Lucille. Every person they passed looked at them with curious eyes, wondering who the new woman was. Some already knew or guessed who she was as word of The Widow and Negan's obsession with her had already been spread around ever since that night. Anytime someone looked at her a little too long or in a way Negan didn't like, he shot them a threatening glare and they backed off immediately.
They arrived at a door and Negan opened it, guiding Maggie into the room. Maggie looked around and saw that it was a bedroom, which she assumed was Negan's. "Welcome to my room," Negan said, confirming Maggie's guess. The room was big and had various furniture items. There was a large bed with a canopy over it and a table next to it with a lamp on it, a dresser, a couch with a coffee table in front of it, and a couple of chairs across from the couch with a table in between them. There were also shelves behind the couch and a few plants throughout the room. All of the furniture was black and so was the room itself. It looked dreary but also fancy in a way. She also noticed that there was a door to what looked like a bathroom. Maggie stood waiting for any instruction from Negan, not wanting to upset him by moving somewhere she wasn't supposed to.
Negan left her for a moment to walk over to the dresser. He put Lucille down against the side of it and opened one of the drawers, took out some sort of black fabric, then turned around and walked back over to Maggie. He unfolded the item and held it up to show her, revealing that it was a dress. It was sleeveless, above knee length, and had a low neck; it looked a little too revealing for Maggie's taste. Negan held out the dress to her and Maggie stared at it then looked up at him in confusion.
"Take it and put it on," he told her. Maggie's eyes flicked back down to the dress then back to him again. Negan noticed her hesitance. "All my wives wear one of these, darling. It's one of the rules of being a wife," he explained and smiled at her.
Maggie scrunched her face in a sort of disgust. "I have to wear that?"
"Yes." Negan's smile fell and his expression soured. "Unless you want me to pay a visit to your friends." Maggie got the hint and took the dress from him.
"Good girl." Negan walked back over to the dresser to pick up Lucille again. He then moved to sit down on the couch, resting Lucille against the side of it next to him. "You can get changed in there," he told her and pointed towards the bathroom.
Maggie nodded and then moved to enter the bathroom and closed the door behind her. She stood and looked at the dress in her hands for a second before putting it down to remove the clothes she currently had on. She then put the dress on and looked in the mirror that was above the sink. It did look nice, she had to admit, but it was still something that she usually wouldn't wear and that made her uncomfortable, especially since it was for Negan's benefit.
After inspecting herself, she opened the door to the bathroom and exited. She walked back over to stand off to the side in front of the couch. "Well, look at you," Negan said once he saw her and the look he gave her as his eyes scanned her body had her feeling exposed.
"Have a seat," he told her and gestured towards one of the chairs across from him. Maggie nodded and moved to sit on the chair like he said.
"So, the rules of being a wife. You know the first, you have to wear a black dress like that every day," he began explaining. "Second rule: You cannot have any other partners. I am the only one you're to be with." A snicker accidentally escaped Maggie's mouth at that. He can have multiple wives but they can't have someone else? she thought.
Negan didn't find it funny though. "I'm serious. I don't tolerate cheating. Any sorry schmuck who gets caught with you gets a nice kiss on the cheek from a hot iron. You understand?" Maggie gulped and nodded. "Yes… Sorry."
"Good. Now, there's one last rule…" Negan stood up and walked over to the side table by the bed. He opened the drawer and took out a small item. He walked back over to Maggie to stand in front of her to show her. It was a collar. It looked to be made of leather and on the ends at the front of it were two metal rings that connected to a heart-shaped lock in the middle to keep it closed. The color of the collar was a bright red, like the one of Negan's scarf, and the lock was a shiny silver. Negan had a small key, the same color as the lock and that had a chain connected to it like a necklace, in one of his hands, which she assumed belonged with the collar. Negan gestured with one of his hands upwards to indicate that he wanted Maggie to stand up and hesitantly, she did.
Negan moved the collar around to unlock the lock and before she could question it, he wrapped the collar around the back of Maggie's neck, making her eyes widen in shock. "The last rule is, you have to wear this at all times, unless you're doing something like bathing of course. If you find it too uncomfortable to sleep in, I'll allow it to be off then… But I'd rather I didn't have to," he explained to her as he fastened the lock back in place at the front of her neck, securing the collar around her. "Beautiful," he complimented once it was in place and he saw it on her. He then took the key and put it around his neck, arranging it to sit on top of his scarf. "This key will stay on me almost at all times. The only one who gets to decide if and when you remove the collar is me," he explained further.
"Every rule is to be respected but this is the most important one. Do you understand?" Maggie nodded. She hated the idea of having to wear a collar but she didn't want to challenge it and possibly upset him enough to hurt people she cared about. "Good," Negan said.
"You make all your wives wear one of these?" Maggie asked, genuinely curious and somewhat bewildered at the idea that he would. It wasn't too tight nor too heavy physically but just the concept of wearing it seemed absurd and uncomfortable to Maggie.
"No… Just you," he answered and Maggie furrowed her brows in confusion at that. "You're special, baby. Ever since I saw you in that clearing, I wanted you. I couldn't stop thinking about you, which is why I had to bring you back with me. There's just something about you that drives me crazy." His tone was sincere and his gaze was so intense that Maggie blushed and had to move her eyes away from looking at his. "And the fact that I made you a widow? Shit… I would say I'm sorry but I'm not, I love it. Widows, especially ones like you, are amazing. And I know I can fill that void inside you, darling." Maggie cringed inwardly and a surge of anger flowed through her at that. She tried to hide her annoyance though. If Negan noticed her change in mood, he ignored it to continue talking. "This collar-" He raised his hand to cradle the heart-shaped lock in his hand and the brief contact his hand made her skin made her let out a faint surprised gasp. "-signifies that you're special. One of a kind. It's important that we show that."
Negan ran his thumb across the lock before releasing his hold on the collar. He then walked over to the door to the room to open it and looked back at Maggie. "Come on, I'm gonna give you a proper grand tour," he told her and smiled at her.
She stood there for a moment before hesitantly following him out the door. She thought about what he said, how she was the only wife who had to wear a collar, and anxiety and anger started creeping into her knowing that people were going to see her like this. She hated that not only was she now considered a wife to the man who murdered her husband but also that she's being othered as special to him. Maggie reached up to feel the collar, the item suddenly feeling restricting on her. She doesn't know how she'll get out of this but she'll play along for now so that everyone stays safe.
...
A/N: I don't know if I was able to describe the collar properly so if you're having trouble imagining what it looks like, I'm imaging it to look similar to this (just with the colors I described instead): /a/jZgSChX
Also sorry about the doctor part, I know that was probably dumb/random, but I had to establish that Maggie isn't pregnant in this AU somehow lol.
I already have some stuff written for chapter 2 so hopefully it won't be too long until I can finish it. :]
Thank you for reading! 3
