Just a small prompt I thought of as I was watching DeadAlive, Someone had to pay rent for like 6 months after his funeral, and well who else but Scully, So I thought of this prompt, Enjoy
His Apartment
She unlocked his apartment and he walked in slowly looking around in quiet consideration for a bit before finally speaking, "It looks different"
"It's clean" she quipped going over and sitting on his couch as he went and looked at the fish tank.
"Missing a molly," he said.
"Yeah, she wasn't as lucky as you," Scully said and he looked over with an odd look on his face.
"Is everything okay?" she asked and he sat beside her.
"This doesn't make sense," he said.
"What specifically?" she asked as nothing that had happened in the last few days had made any sense.
"This apartment, I highly doubt Mr. Conrad was keeping my place available to me in case I miraculously rose from the dead like our lord and savior Jesus Christ," he said in an attempt at a joke.
"Jesus Christ, Mulder? Don't go getting a god complex on me" she said rubbing her stomach.
"I highly doubt my landlord was fine with not having rent paid for six months and I certainly wasn't paying it," he said giving her a questioning look the realization that Scully has probably been paying rent on his apartment and keeping it clean for six months after his funeral.
"You're rents been paid every month," Scully said.
"By you?"
"Yes," she said. "Well technically but using the money I got from your will so I mean more like you have been paying it"
"Hmm," he said lost in thought for a second.
"Speaking of your will, I have no idea how this works as you know people don't tend to come back from the dead but I will pay you the money back," she said and he shook his head.
"No seriously Mulder you have to have money to support yourself and have some savings. I wasn't expecting to get money from your will at all, that was surprising"
Mulder laughed, "Who did you think would be in my will, I have no living relatives!"
"I honestly wasn't expecting you to have a will," she said. "Very um adult of you"
"We have a dangerous job and I thought I was dying, Scully, I didn't want any question as to where my money went afterward."
"I may have made a move on you sooner if I knew how much money you have" she joked and he play-hit her.
"Oh please you are hardly a gold digger. That really couldn't have been much of a surprise. You knew my family was well off and I inherited all their money," he said. He knows that in the event of his death, she was set to inherit over 300,000 dollars which he never told her (and he donated some of his will to various charities and his largest ones to different cancer research ones).
"Why do you live in this place when you were sitting on that much money?"
"I like my apartment," he said. "Don't worry about paying me back for anything you bought…"
"Mulder the only thing I have done with the money is pay your rent for six months, put some towards a college fund for our child, and put the rest in savings," she said. Our child, he ruminated on the words. He is still trying to wrap his mind around the fact she is pregnant and part of him was worried it wasn't by him, that after he went missing she asked someone else. Trying to catch up on nearly 8 months gone and figuring out where he fits into things has left him feeling dizzy. When he left he and Scully had only been officially dating for 2 months and he's afraid to ask where this leaves them now that he is back from the dead and she is only 6 weeks away from giving birth to their child.
"Our child," he said softly as if to himself more than to her. The way it sounded brought tears to his eyes.
"Oh Mulder," she said hugging him and he found the feeling of her 8-month pregnant belly pressing against him a bit too overwhelming so he slowly pulled away and he watched her face fall before putting the strong mask back on.
She's in her third trimester carrying your child and is trying to comfort you and you pull away from her, you asshole, he thought. He knows comments he has made since his return has hurt her and it wasn't his intent but he just feels so lost.
"I'm sorry, I just… this is a lot. It's been like 8 months for you but for me a week ago we were just starting to leave things at each other's places," he said and she nodded.
"No I get it, I'm sorry!"
"No! I… you have been amazing, I can't imagine what you have gone through during these months and… I mean you kept my apartment, why?"
"I um… I just wasn't ready to let go of it. It was a comfort having it still here. I would come by to keep it clean and end up falling asleep in your bed sometimes a few times a week because it made me feel close to you. Sometimes it was the only way I could get to sleep… I was having to face the reality that after everything we have been through together, I was going to have to bring our child into this world and raise him without you! The thought was unbearable but at the same time I was just so thankful that at least I had a piece of you with me at all times" she said tears in her eyes as she looked down at her belly rubbing small circles with her thumb.
His heart ached at the words. He never wanted her to deal with this alone and with such grief in her heart.
He couldn't help but feel robbed, he was supposed to be there! He was supposed to rub her back when she had morning sickness, do the midnight craving runs, give her massages when her feet were aching, hold her hand during all her appointments, and reassure her that she was so beautiful as her body started to change. He didn't get to do any of that. He was supposed to have gotten the privilege to watch as her baby belly grew over time. Be there for the first time he moved inside her. He was robbed of all of those moments with her and yet he still felt she had it worse. To have all those moments without him and knowing that he wasn't coming back. He is glad that his apartment gave her some comfort at least but it should've been him.
"I never wanted that for you… to go through this alone," he said putting his hand over hers on her stomach.
"I'm just so glad you are back!" she said. "Promise me something"
"Anything"
"You will be there! When I give birth to our child, I am holding your hand! Those sleepless nights you will be there! When he goes to his first day of school, he waves goodbye to both of us! That his teenage arguments are with both of us! That you are helping me move him into his college dorm! Promise me! Because I have spent every night since you have gone missing thinking of these moments and having to do them without you" she said and he couldn't help but be overwhelmed by the gravity of this promise. While deep down it is all he wants it is still overwhelming to imagine this future with her.
"I promise," he said, with every intention of keeping this promise, taking her hand and kissing it. "I'm here!"
Hope you enjoyed!
