"I'll see you in the morning, Mrs. Eaton," Four says, his armed wrapped lovingly around his soon to be wife.

"I'm not Mrs. Eaton just yet," Tris giggles into his ear. "Not until tomorrow."

"And tomorrow can't come soon enough," he replies. "Do we really have to do this whole sleeping apart the night before the wedding thing?"

Tris pulls back and looks at her fiancé with a smile. "It was your idea!"

Four rolls his eyes playfully in response. "I know, but I take it back."

"You can't take it back. I'm pretty sure Zeke has some surprises in store for you. Just go and enjoy your last night alone as an unmarried man."

"What about you? Why don't you take Christina up on her offer to stay the night with you?"

Tris shakes her head. "You know my apartment is just a bed and a bunch of boxes."

"Then stay at her place."

"I want to spend one last night in my apartment before it's no longer mine. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to be living with you full time, but I love my little shoe box of an apartment. We've been through a lot her and I and I want a chance to say goodbye."

Four sighs. "Fine. If that's what's going to make you happy then enjoy your night alone."

"Thank you," she says, giving him a quick peck on the lips. "Now go, Zeke is waiting for you."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

Four squeezes her hand briefly before turning and walking away.

Their rehearsal dinner was meant to end ages ago, but their friends had somehow turned it into a pre-wedding bash and now Tris was desperate to get home and sleep in fear of being a zombie for her wedding day.

The walk back to her apartment is quiet and Tris smiles to herself as she thinks excitedly about her impeding nuptials.

The sound of her name pulls her from her thoughts as she approaches her door. Looking up, she finds Eric leaning against it.

"Eric," she says confused. "What are you doing here?"

"I need to talk to you," he says franticly.

"What's going on? Is something wrong?"

"Not out here. Can we go inside?"

"Is it the factionless again?" Tris asks her colleague as she unlocks her door.

The factionless had become more and restless as of late and on more then one occasion Dauntless had been forced to step in. As the leader in charge of security, Eric had been monitoring the situation for months and was convinced now more than ever that civil was war imminent.

"Not this time," Eric responds, shaking his head as he follows her into her apartment.

"Wow," he says, looking around at the piles of boxes. "I didn't realize you were already packed."

"We figured there was no point in putting it off. I'm barely here now anyways and as soon as we're married, we'll be officially living together so why hold onto this place," she replies shrugging.

"I guess I hadn't really thought about it. It's going to be weird not having you across the hall anymore," he says sadly.

"We both knew this day was coming."

Eric shakes his head affirmatively and walks around the room running his fingertips over the bare walls until he reaches her closet. The door is closed, but a long white wedding dress hangs from a hook above the frame cascading down to the floor.

"Don't marry him," he says suddenly, his back to her.

Tris freezes in place.

Did she hear him correctly?

"What?" she asks softly.

"Don't marry him," he repeats, turning to face her.

"Eric –," she starts, her eyes wide.

"Please, he's not the one for you," he says taking a few steps towards her.

"You don't get to do this," she says, shaking her head and taking a step back.

"Tris please," he begs. "You're making a mistake."

"You need to go."

"Hear me out," he continues to beg. "He's not right for you. You know he's not."

Tris crosses her arms over her chest and glares at him.

"And who is right for me then? You?" she asks angrily, eyebrows raised. "Because you had your chance and you made it crystal clear that this – that us – could never work and that I needed to accept that."

"Tris I – "

"No. You don't get to come here the night before my wedding, my fucking wedding, and tell me I'm making a mistake."

"I wasn't ready then, but I'm ready now."

"No, you had your chance. The night he proposed to me I came to you, and I gave you the chance to step up and you told me to accept his proposal. You told me you weren't capable of loving me the way he was and that I was better off with him. So, I accepted his proposal, and I shoved my feelings for you as far down as I could, and do you know what happened without you as an option?" she pauses, and watches as he shakes his head. "I was finally able to accept his love fully and to return it. He loves me and I love him. And we're happy."

"We could be happy," he says taking another step towards her. "I could make you happy."

Tris scoffs in disbelief as Eric moves, closing the gap between them.

"Please give me a chance," he says barely above a whisper looking down at her.

She knows she should back away from him, but she can feel the heat radiating off of his body and as the scent of his cologne takes over her senses, she ignores her better judgement and looks up into his stormy grey eyes. The intensity of his stare makes her breath catch and she can't look away.

As he places his hand gingerly against her cheek, she internally screams at herself to take a step back, but her body is locked in place and she can't seem to move. She opens her mouth to speak, willing herself to tell him to back off, but before any words can come out, his lips are on hers.

She doesn't respond at first, too stunned by his boldness, but then, as if by its own volition, her mouth begins to move in tandem with his and for a moment, Tris forgets herself and her body takes over. But, as his arms begin to wrap around her waist, her eyes shoot open, and the realization of what she's doing hits her like a bucket of ice.

Placing her hands against his chest, she pushes him hard, and he stumbles backwards from the force before steadying himself and looking at her with a shocked expression.

"You need to leave, now," Tris says as forcefully as she can through ragged breaths.

"No, what I need is you."

Tris sighs.

"You're too late."

"I'm in love with you," Eric says.

She chuckles darkly in response.

"You're in love with me? Now? Now you're in love me? You had months, months, before he proposed and nearly a year since then that you could have come to me and told me this, but you didn't. No, instead you choose to tell me the night before my wedding and I'm what? Supposed to just leave him and choose you? Is that what you're expecting me to do?"

"I…"

"This is bullshit. You aren't in love with me. If you were you would never do this. You're just panicking because as of tomorrow any chance you had with me is gone and that's your problem to deal with, not mine."

Tris marches over to her door and flings it open.

"Now get the fuck out of my apartment."

"Tris – "

"GET OUT."

Without another word, Eric walks over to the door and crosses the threshold. He turns to face her, but she slams the door shut before he can say anything more.

Tris takes a deep breath and rests her forehead against the door. She stays there with her eyes closed for a minute as she tries to steady her breathing. Silence falls over her and just as she's considering opening the door to make sure he is gone, she hears his voice.

"I love you," he says simply.

Her breath hitches and her eyes begin to water as those three simple words that she had once longed to hear push her towards the edge. She has to bite her lip to stop herself from responding as he shuffles his feet on the other side of the door. She knows she should stand up and withdraw further into her apartment in order to make it easier to ignore him, but she can't bring herself to do it.

The pair stay silent and still on their respective sides of the door until finally, Tris hears him beginning to retreat. She listens intently as his footsteps grow quieter and quieter until she can no longer hear him.

"I love you too," she whispers to herself before sliding to the ground and dissolving into tears.

A/N: Just a short one that came to me randomly while listening to Anberlin. The idea struck me and I just went with it. I went over it a few times but it hasn't been betaed so I'm sorry if there's a few mistakes. I have a hard time catching things sometimes even with looking it over multiple times. Hope you enjoyed!
