Once Carson reached the group assembled at the newly found lab, he did blood draws on everyone. Everyone that is, but the Harris-Chases, who reminded him that they refused blood draws and such. Even in emergencies. They had their reasons and they weren't budging, they insisted as they put on the hazmat suits and helped Jesse into a child sized one. Sheppard was helping Toran into one when he heard their objections and wondered about it. Under the circumstances, so were Carson and Elizabeth. Once everyone was sealed into a hazmat suit, Carson directed Nurse Cho to take them back to the infirmary, along with the samples and scan everyone and get started on analyzing the blood samples. He and the newly arrived Radek, began testing everything in the lab.
As Radek hooked his laptop into the system and began searching for information on the work done in this lab, Carson began collecting samples from the broken containers. Worry over the possibilities was a constant shadow in their minds and they discussed those possibilities as they worked. It was a relief when Dr. Yamato and Nurse Cho called to report the blood analysis and scans all showed clear.
After some time, they were able to determine that what had been released was chemical in nature. The broken containers had mingled different chemicals, producing a combination that Atlantis' systems had determined was potentially dangerous to human life. It's air scrubbers had been working on it from the moment that they detected it. Those same scrubbers hadn't been working in the lab, so Atlantis had only detected it when the sensors in the corridor registered it.
When McKay and Sheppard, along with Radak, met in Elizabeth's office later to discuss the findings, Sheppard decided to ask about the blood draw.
"Why do you think they refused to let you draw blood, Doc?"
"I wondered about that myself." Elizabeth said.
"Aye, that concerns me, too. At the time of our first meeting, they told me to consider it a religious objection. That even under emergency conditions, no blood draws or tissue sampling is allowed on any of them. I suppose, it may relate to Xander being experimented on as a teenager against his will. Our scans showed nothing of any concern, so I didn't press it. But it does make me wonder."
"Do you think there's something to worry about?" Elizabeth asked.
"I doubt it, the other Command they work for would do their medical evaluations. If there was something to find, they would have found it and the Harris-Chases would never have been allowed on Atlantis. Still, it does make me curious."
"Well if there's nothing to worry about, in regards to it, let's just get back to work." Elizabeth said, dismissing everyone.
Sheppard headed over to collect Xander and Cordelia to evaluate their proficiency on the weapons used by Atlantis personnel. Toran and Jesse decided they still wanted to see the whales and set out to do so. Radak and McKay returned to the lab and Carson to his infirmary.
Once at the shooting range, Xander reminded Sheppard that they could see better than normal people, so he would need to move the targets back.
"Wow, you really can see better then people normally can." He said, after the testing was done. "Quite a ways, too. That was impressive."
"Thank you. It can come in handy, like with scenting the odd chemicals released earlier. When it's something new, that we've never encountered before, we know there's something different, but can't always identify it correctly, as evidence by us thinking it was sickness, rather then chemical earlier." Xander said.
"That part didn't matter at the time. Just knowing that there was something to investigate did. So thanks for warning us." Sheppard answered.
"No problem. Stuff like that will probably come up again, especially when we go off world. We'll make sure you know if we encounter anything questionable. In the meantime, it's been a long day already and it's only the second day. I think we should collect Jesse and call it a day." Cordelia said.
"I agree. Next time I see Jack, though. I may have a word with him."
"Jack? Jack O'Neill?" Sheppard asked. "What about?"
"Yeah, Jack O'Neill. Before we left, he said Jesse was as much of a trouble magnet as I am or he or you are. He tempted Murphy. He should know by now, there are consequences when you do that."
"Oh boy, should he ever!" Sheppard exclaimed. "Well, I'll see you tomorrow at eleven in the gym. We can spar then. Oh, and Teyla will spar with you, Cordelia at the same time, so can we see for ourselves what you can do."
"That's fine. See you all tomorrow."
Once Jesse was collected and Toran dropped off at his quarters, they made their way back to their own quarters. Xander made them all supper and they settled down for a quiet evening. Jesse excitedly telling them about the weird and cool whales. Eventually, even Jesse tired and they headed off to bed, hoping tomorrow would go better.
A/N If anyone is wondering why they refuse blood draws and tissue sampling, in Twice the Trouble, a cheek swab done on Jesse by Caroline revealed anomalies she's never seen before. Per Xander's suggestions back in 'I Can Be Brave For You' mystical diagnostics are done regularly on each member of the Scooby Gang. They know what would show up on a regular exam. The anomalies relate to their 'other' nature, being a werewolf and giant brown hyena. For the record, The Protectors, in The Protectors au, being Bonded with wolves, actually scent better. Xander in The Brave au, scents better then Cordelia because he has a little extra from the Fish boy experiment. Just in case anyone's wondering.
