EZ looked at her not entirely sure why she was there or why she wanted to talk to him.
"What can I do for you Mrs. Galindo?"
"Please call me Caitlin, because after this conversation, I think we'll be on a first name basis."
He narrowed his eyes but remained quiet.
"You said that you did your time in jail, right?"
"Yes."
"It didn't hit me at first, but in the State of California, second-degree murder is at least 20 years of imprisonment. You didn't do 20 years."
She watched as EZ shifted uneasily on his feet.
"You cut a deal with the DEA, didn't you."
His eyes darted up to meet hers.
"Look," she said, "I'm going to gain us some time and you needing to use your imagination to find an excuse. I saw you talking with Kevin Jimenez."
"He's my second cousin," replied EZ.
"And the fact he's DEA is a mere coincidence. I'm not stupid like most of the member of the MC who could buy that."
"How do you even know he's DEA?"
"Because when I was in college, he contacted me to recruit me as I was coming out of a sociology class."
"You're DEA?!"
"No, I never went through with the procedure as I knew my family background would prevent me from joining. What do they want from you?"
"Intel on the club…"
"…and my husband," added Caitlin, finishing EZ's sentence for him. "That's why your father wasn't too thrilled to see me the other or today."
EZ nodded. "Look, I'm sorry. Don't think I enjoy doing this, I could lose my brother in this."
"I don't blame you. It's not like you had a lot of choices."
"Why are you so calm and understanding? I assumed you would have walked out by now, telling the MC and Miguel that I'm a rat."
"I can't do that. It would be hypocritical of me. It takes one to know one."
"You're gathering intel on Miguel? For whom?"
"I'm not. It's complicated. Before I knew Miguel, I was approached by two CIA agents who were already infiltrated in Miguel's ranks. They threatened to send my brother and the others to jail if I didn't agree to mule once a week for Miguel."
EZ blinked a couple of times in utter disbelief.
"That was the only thing I needed to do. Then I met Miguel and things took a turn, neither the CIA nor I could have expected."
"You fell in love with him."
Caitlin nodded. "Miguel stopped the delivery after one and I thought I was in the clear. Today, the agent came to tell me that I was at risk of going to jail as I married Miguel."
"They made you an offer."
"Yes. Either I turn and help them put Miguel behind bars or I go down with him, never being able to raise my child."
EZ shook his head. "Seems to me like we both have our backs up against the wall."
"I know they don't have what they need, because if they did, they wouldn't have me go fishing for information. I need to get rid of them before they do."
"Just as I need to get rid of the DEA. But if they suspect us, it blows our deals."
"Maybe, unless we can make it look like an accident or a showdown between two Federal Agencies. Or I tell Miguel and he handles both our problems, making sure they disappear, never to be found. After that, we don't trust anyone anymore…the ranks, the MC, remain as they are."
"How sure are you that this would even work?"
"I'm not sure it will, but I can't sit here and wait. I'm months away from bringing this baby into the world, I refuse to do it if it's to lose him, or Miguel."
"I can't let the MC know, otherwise they'll kill me. Do you trust Miguel to keep it to himself?"
Caitlin thought for a moment. "I don't know, but I think that he'll be grateful that they are out of the picture, regardless of how they got there in the first place."
"What about you? How is he going to react to what you kept from him?"
"I know my husband, I know exactly what to tell him. The CIA agent said something to me when I first met him; he said that women had a lot of power… so I'm going to use that power with them and with Miguel."
"We can't tell anyone about this."
"Well, considering your father is eavesdropping on us from the beginning of the conversation, I guess I can trust that he's on your side and would prefer you going back to a more normal situation."
EZ looked over her shoulder at his dad who was indeed listening in from the other room. Their eyes met and he saw his dad give him a nod, indicating that he was on board with what they wanted to do.
"You can trust him. Let me know what comes of your discussion with Miguel as if he goes through with it, I need to make sure I have a solid alibi."
"I promise," she said turning toward the door, meeting Felipe in the corridor. "Thank you, Mr. Reyes," she said taking the packed ribs from him.
"Felipe," he answered.
"Muchos gracias, Felipe," replied Caitlin. "Ten cuidado."
"Tu Tambien," he replied as he led her back down the corridor and escorted her to the door.
"Buenos dias, Felipe."
"Buenos dias, Senora Galindo.
Matteo looked at Caitlin as she sat quietly looking out the car window as they headed back to the Hacienda.
"Is something wrong?
"No, Matteo. Everything is fine."
And if everything went according to plan, it will continue to be fine.
