Book 1 Chapter 1 "The Girl in the Iceberg"
Author's note: Hey guys, I am here with the new crossover. between the Owl House, and avatar The Last Airbender. But this will take place in the Owl house universe, instead of the Avatar universe.
Water, Earth, Fire, Air...
Amity's intro
Gus's grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only she could stop the ruthless Firebenders, but when the world needed her most, she vanished. A hundred years passed and the Fire Nation was nearing victory in the war.
Two years ago, Gus's father and the men of his tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the Fire Nation, leaving me, Gus and Willow to look after the tribe. Some people believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads, and that the cycle is broken. But I haven't lost hope. I still believe that somehow, the Avatar will return to save the world.
Title: Luz The Last Airbender...
As the title card fades, the scene opens onto a shot of an icy sea before panning slowly to the left, revealing more towering icebergs drifting in the water as the shot rotates, moving over a large snow-covered area where the untouched blanket of snow is broken by two tracks of footsteps. The shot fades to another shot of the sea and of icebergs in blue water contrasted by the paleness of the sky beyond. As the shot once again pans to the left and rotates likewise, a small canoe comes into view, its motion through the water indicated by the wake left behind it. The shot zooms slightly on the canoe before cutting down to it, providing a side angle of the canoe and of the walls of ice rising on either side of the vessel. Willow, a teenage girl, Gus, a near-teen boy, and Amity, an older teen who has her hands in the cold water, are sitting in the boat, Willow holds a spear at the ready, while Gus simply stares into the water on the other side of the boat. The shot cuts to an overhead view, revealing that a fish is swimming close to the surface right in front of Willow, who is focused on it, following its every movement. Cut to a frontal view of her.
Chapter 1 "A Girl in the Iceberg"
Gus's POV
As Willow, Amity, and I were on a boat, Willow was trying to catch a fish with her spear..
"Watch and learn Gus, this is how you catch a fish." Willow told me.
After Willow started raising her spear back, I was bored while Amity had her fingers in the cold water. That's when I saw a fish and took off my gloves and started to bend the water catching the fish.
Nobody's POV
The shot pans quickly from Willow to Gus, who seems indifferent to her claim and turns back to his side of the boat again. His expression changes to surprise; as the shot jumps behind him, looking down into the water over his shoulder, another fish quickly swims by him, close to where he sits. He shoots a quick glance toward his friend, removing the glove from his left hand. He stretches her arm out in the direction of the fish, taking a deep breath. His look is a mixture of concentration and apprehension as he starts making a wavy motion with his wrist, moving his hand up and down.
The shot widens out, Willow, still focused wholly on the fish in front of her, is completely unaware of what is happening behind her back. As Gus continues to move his hand, the water in front of Gus, just in front of the shot, starts to ripple. Suddenly, a bubble of water rises up from the ocean containing the newly trapped fish.
"Willow, look!" Gus exclaimed as he told her to look.
[Close-up of Willow; whispering.] Shhh! Gus, you're going to scare it away. [A look of bliss adorns her face. She licks her lips and wiggles her fingers, not taking his eyes off the fish.] Mmmmm ... I can already smell it cookin'." Willow told him.
Behind Willow, Gus is still making circular movements both His hands suspending the bubble of water that holds the fish in the air and moving back and forth. the camera cuts to his face, contorted slightly by the focus it took him to control the water.
(Struggling with the water that passes right in front of him)
Gus's POV
"But, Willow! I caught one!" I told her.
Nobody's POV
The bubble containing his fish slowly drifts around him to hang over Willow, who is still oblivious. As the bubble hovers over his head, Willow raises her spear to strike the fish she was following. She bursts the bubble of water with the blunt end of his weapon, causing Gus to lose control of the water; it rains down on Willow, soaking her.
(Exclaims indignantly) Hey!" Gus said.
As Gus lets out a gasp of discomfort, the fish tumbles through the air and Gus follows its arc with his eyes as it flies over his head and splashes back into the sea. Gus rounds on his sister, placing his spear perpendicular to the rim of the boat as he yells irately. the shot cuts to a close-up of her.
"Why is it that every time you play with magic water, I get soaked?" Willow asked.
Gus clenches his fists and a few drops of water fall from his soaked gloves.
(Cut to his face; he sighs lightly before answering in slight annoyance.] It's not "magic", it's water bending! And it's ..." Gus was about to answer but Willow cut him off.
(Cutting him off.) Yeah, yeah, "an ancient art unique to our culture", blah, blah, blah. Look, I'm just saying (Grabbing her warrior's wolf knot with his left hand as he turns away from her, wringing the water out of it. Meanwhile, Gus has crossed his arms.) That if I had weird powers, I'd keep my weirdness to myself.
(Cut to his face as he raises an eyebrow skeptically, arms still crossed.) You're calling me weird? I'm not the one who makes muscles at myself every time I see my reflection in the water!" Gus told her.
Near the end of his response, Gus smiles smugly at his friend, as the shot cuts to her, she is flexing at her reflection in the water and grinning confidently. Her happy look vanishes upon hearing her brother's remark and she turns around slowly, meaning to face him. Before she can say anything, however, the canoe suddenly shudders. As the three of them both try to keep from falling over, Gus whirls around toward his end of the canoe, a frantic look on his face.
The camera cuts to a far view of the canoe, which pans up as the boat moves away from it. The boat is caught in a rapid current, which is pulling it swiftly toward a jumble of large icebergs which block the end of the narrow passage formed by the towering walls of ice. Willow paddles the boat in an attempt to stay clear of any floating chunks of ice. She manages to gain just enough speed to keep the boat from being crushed by two icebergs which slam together behind the boat. A series of shots follows: the canoe moving through the water as Willow rows furiously; a close-up of Willow's head; and a frontal shot of the canoe as it is nearly pinned by a number of smaller chunks of ice. Cut to both Amity and Gus's faces and voice full of panic as they start to yell commands to Willow..
"Watch out! Go left! Go left!" They both exclaimed simultaneously.
The shot shows an overview of the ice floes moving closer together in front of the boat, narrowing their path. The boat manages to stay clear of some of the icebergs, but it veers to the right with the current and becomes pinned by three large chunks of ice. As the canoe is completely crushed by the ice, Gus Willow and Amity throw themselves from the canoe and onto one of the ice flows; Willow nearly slides off the other side into the water, but comes to a halt at the floe's very edge. As she raises her head, looking around, the shot zooms out to reveal the friends are floating on one ice flow among dozens.
Willow, shuffling on his hands and knees, moves away from the rim toward the middle of the flow, sitting next to Gus and Amity. her spear is embedded point-first in the ice just behind her.
(A touch of bitterness in her voice.) You call that left? Gus asked.
"You don't like my steering? Well, maybe you should've [She waves her hands, mockingly imitating water bending.] Waterbended us out of the ice." Willow told him.
[Indignantly.] "So it's my fault?" Gus wanted to know.
[Annoyed.] I knew I should've left you home! [Cut to a close-up of the friends; Willow is staring down at her friend in anger while she rants calmly.] Leave it to a boy to screw things up!"
"You are the most sexist, (He brings his hands up to his head and swings them back down and behind him in his rage; the movement creates a small wave of water behind him.) immature, (Hands raised back to his head.) nut brained ... (Swings his arms back down again, creating a slightly larger wave; he raises his hands back to his head during a brief loss for words.) I'm embarrassed (Throwing a hand upward, a short jet of water shoots upward as well.) to be a friend of yours!" Gus screamed at his friend.
He swings both his hands back forcefully once again and his unconscious waterbending hurls a wave directly into the towering iceberg behind her; with a loud, splitting crack, a hook like fissure arcs up its surface and out its side, leaving a spray of ice where it ends. Willow, who wears a somewhat disinterested expression, glances briefly in her friend's direction and sees the iceberg; after a short moment, she does a double-take, her expression morphing into one of terror. The shot cuts to show Gus's outburst from behind him; as he continues with his verbal outburst and arm movements, little chunks of ice from the iceberg splash into the water, unheard and unnoticed by Gus.
"Ever since mom died, [Points to himself.] I've been doing all the work around camp while you've been off playing soldier!" Gus explained.
[Close-up of a rage-fueled Gus as he continues his outburst, a finger pointed in Willow's face.] I even wash all the clothes! Have you ever smelled your dirty socks? Let me tell you,not pleasant!" Gus told her.
As he yells out that last word, he unconsciously waterbends once again, causing two new splits in the chunk of ice.
(In a screeching voice, both Willow and Amity's eyes open wide in fear.) Gus, settle down!" Both Willow and Amity exclaimed.
"No that's it! I'm done helping you! From now on, you're on your OWN!" Gus screamed that last part.
His last movement is his most agitated and it creates a huge wave which, when it impacts the iceberg, sends a number of fissures to snake their way up the iceberg; one of them reaches the top of the iceberg, splitting it completely in half. Petrified, Willow and Amity gasps for air, and it is only now that Gus turns to look behind him. He gasps and the shot cuts to the iceberg; the two halves begin to fall away from each other and the friends can be seen through the widening space between them. The shot jumps to the friends' backs as the two halves collapse into the water; a wave larger than any Gus cast at it radiates outward toward them and they are thrown to the ice as it pushes their ice flow backward.
As the waves subside, the shot cuts to a head-on close-up of the siblings, their heads slightly over the edge of the ice. Willow, holding a protective arm over Gus, turns her head toward him."Okay, you've gone from "weird" to "freakish", [He releases her.] Gus." Amity told him..
(Astonished.) "You mean I did that?" Gus wanted to know.
Sarcastically, glancing at her and smirking.] Yep. [Nudging her with his elbow.] "Congratulations." Both Willow and Amity congratulated him sarcastically.
Several small bubbles appear on the surface of the water directly in front of them and a small spot of water begins to glow with a bright bluish hue. An overhead shot shows the spread of the brilliant glow and the bubbles within. Cut to the head-on close-up as the three friends scramble back in renewed terror from the edge, just as a large, roughly spherical iceberg breaks the surface of the water.
The shot jumps behind Gus Amity and Willow as an iceberg rises above the surface, revealing its massive form to be the source of the glow. The crashing waves generated by the Iceberg's rising push the floe backward as the berg itself rocks to one side, before coming to rest with its rounded dome exposed above the water. Mesmerized by the iceberg, Gus strays closer and stares at the iceberg; behind her, Willow half heartedly stretches out his hand, as if to hold her back. A few cuts ensue: the iceberg from behind Willow and Gus; Gus's face as he stares at the object; and a shot of the iceberg itself, revealing a human shape within below a larger, indistinguishable mass. The human figure, perched in lotus, has glowing arrows on its head and hands. Close-up of Gus as he raises an eyebrow in confusion. The shot cuts to a closer view of the figure in the ice, its features accentuated by reflected light, revealing it to be a girl. Suddenly, the girl opens her eyes, the same brilliant light emanating from them, eliciting shocked gasps from all three of the friends.
Amity's POV
"She's alive! We have to help!" I told the two.
Before Gus could grab it, I grabbed Willow's club out of its sheath on her back and pulled her hood over her head, heading in the direction of the strange girl sealed in the iceberg. Willow again reaches out her hand in an attempt to hold Amity back, though she is already running across the ice..
"Amity, get back here! (She grabs her spear from the ice and runs after Amity, who is already at the ice's edge.) We don't know what that thing is!" Both Willow and Gus told her.
Nobody's POV
Amity hops across the short distance between her ice flow and the iceberg on five tiny chinks of ice; Willow and Gus, close behind her, does the same. Reaching the iceberg first, Amity repeatedly strikes the iceberg with Willow's club. On her fifth strike, the club breaks through the surface and a great gust of wind, which escapes from within the iceberg, throws her and Willow and Gus back from the side of the dome. Fissures quickly snake their way over the whole iceberg and, in a massive outward explosion, the entire orb of ice destroys itself. A beam of light bursts from the core of the iceberg and rockets into the sky. The camera shows the iceberg from the shallow sea bottom as it emits ripples of light. The scene switches to a group of tiger seals, who erect themselves to growl at the distant beam of light.
Cut to a Fire Nation ship, where a woman in a Fire Nation military uniform stands on the deck, gazing at the light. Her blue hair flutters in the wind.
"Finally!" (she turns around to finish another person in uniform who sits at a small table) Kaldo, do you realize what this means?" The woman asked.
(he is playing some sort of card game. he answers probably well looking over the tile he's holding towards his commander.) I won't get to finish my game?" Kaldo exclaimed.
(Turning around again to face the light) It means, my search is about to come to an end."
Kaldo sighs uninterestedly and places a tile on the table.
(Gestures at the light while facing Kaldo again) That light came from an incredible powerful source." (The light dwindles disappears.) It has to be her."
(With continuing this disinterest and an air of skepticism) "Or it's just the celestial lights. We've been down this road before, Lilith." (He looks at tile in his hand,. depicting the symbol of airbending.) I don't want you to get too excited over nothing. (He places it on a tile carrying the symbol of firebending and gestures towards the open place at the other side of the table while continuing relaxed voice) "Please sit. why don't you enjoy a cup of calming Jasmine tea?" Kaldo wanted to know.
(Seriously, still, facing Kaldo) I don't need any calming tea! I need to capture the avatar!
Helmsman, head a course for the light!" Lilith commanded.
Lilith points in the direction of where the light once was. Kaldo calmly continues with his game, placing another tile bearing on the previous one. As he does, a gust of wind washes over him, shaking his tiles.
Cut to the iceberg, where the gale has begun to settle. Willow had protectively clutched Gus and Amity, but she now releases them as she looks around. Light still encircles the remains of the former mountain of ice, now reduced to a hollowed-out crater. Willow looks at her friends and the three get to their feet, Gus holding onto his friends. Willow points her spear at the crater, ready to defend them, though lowers it in shock as a figure emerges slowly from the depression in the iceberg.
Now standing atop the crater, the figure slowly erects herself and looks down at them, and the three friends stare back in wonder and fear.
The circles of light finally dissipate as the girl stops glowing. The figure is revealed to be nothing more than a teen girl, who gives a moan of exhaustion and suddenly faints. Amity gasps and runs forward to catch her before she hits the ground. Gus and Willow follow behind and Willow begins to poke at the girl's head with the blunt end of her spear.
(Waves the spear away. Annoyed.) "Stop it!" Amity told the two.
Amity places the girl gently against the base of the crater. Close-up of the girl as she slowly opens her gray eyes. She gasps in awe as she beholds the green haired girl, who stares at her, in wonder, with deep yellow eyes. Her ponytail swayed in the wind.
(In a weak voice.) "I need to ask you something …" The girl exclaimed.
"What?" Amity wanted to know.
"Please ... come closer." The girl told her to come closer.
[Curiously.] "What is it?" Amity asked curiously.
[In a clear, happy, hopeful tone.] "Will you go penguin sledding with me?" The girl asked happily.
(Awkwardly.) "Uh, sure ... I-I guess." Amity awkwardly answered.
The camera moves back again to show the threesome at the base of the iceberg. The girl elegantly rises to her feet in one swift motion, surprising the other three. Amity looks at her in awe while Willow backs away in shock, aiming her spear at her again. Gus glances at her in disbelief.
(Looking around and rubbing her head, while Amity scrambles on her feet.]" What's going on here?" The girl wanted to know.
(Aggressively.) "You tell us!" Points at the top of the crater. "How did you get in the ice? And why aren't you frozen?" Willow pokes the girl in her side with her spear.
(Lazily pushes the spear away) "I'm not sure." The girl responded.
A low, gruff noise suddenly fills the air, coming from within the crater of the iceberg. Quickly, the girl scrambles up the ridge of ice and happily jumps on the head of a large, furry creature that has the same arrow-shaped marking on his forehead as the girl.
(Exclaims happily.) "Appa! Are you all right?" [She hangs down the side of the beast to look at its eyes, which are still closed.) "Wake up, buddy." The girl told the creature who is named Appa.
He opens an eyelid that immediately closes again once it is released. She jumps down to the front of the bison and tries to lift its enormous head. Amity, Gus and Willow appear around the corner as Appa finally starts to react to Luz, opening his mouth and licking Luz with his giant tongue. Willow's jaw drops upon seeing the beast.
(Laughing cheerfully.) "Ha, ha! You're okay!" Luz cheered while laughing.
Luz hugs the bison's nose. The camera moves back to reveal that the creature stands up on his six legs and stretches itself. When the picture moves closer again, Luz is petting the bison's nose.
"What is that thing?" Willow asked.
"This is Appa, my flying bison." Luz answered.
(Sarcastically) "Right? and this is Gus, my flying friend" Willow told her while noogying Gus's head.
Luz looks questioningly at Willow for a moment, but her attention is diverted back toward her bison when Appa starts to inhale deeply. Realizing what is about to happen, Luz ducks before Appa sneezes, sending a large blast of green snot flying directly onto Willow and Gus, who becomes completely covered in it. They squealed in disgust and began to frantically try to clean it off, rubbing their faces in the snow under the amused gaze of Amity.
(Cheerfully.) Don't worry, it'll wash out. (Green snot is hanging from Willow's face to his glove, dripping down as she retracts her hand. Gus covers his mouth in disgust.) So do you guys live around here?" Luz asked.
(Pointing her spear accusingly again at Luz who is surprised to see the thing.) Don't answer that! Did you see that crazy bolt of light?! She was probably trying to signal the Fire Navy!" Willow told her friends.
(Pushes Willow's spear away again and addresses her sarcastically.) Oh yeah, I'm sure she's a spy for the Fire Navy. You can tell by that evil look in her eye. (Luz shoots the three an earnest grin.) The paranoid one is my friend, Willow. You never told us your name." Amity said.
I'm L ... a-a-a-Achoo! [The girl sneezes, creating an air blast that sends her soaring into the air. She lands on the ground, unharmed.] I'm Luz. [She sniffles a bit.]
(Total disbelief.) "You just sneezed ... (Points to the sky making Gus duck from the swing of her arm.) and flew ten feet in the air!" Willow said.
(She looks questioningly toward the sky.) "Really? It felt higher than that." Luz told her.
(Gasps for air in comprehension.) "You're an airbender!" Amity answered correctly.
"Sure am!" Luz said.
Giant light beams, flying bison, airbenders ... (Walks away.) I think I got midnight sun madness. I'm going home to where stuff makes sense. (She realizes, however, that she is stranded in the middle of the ocean with no way home.)
"Well, if you guys are stuck, Appa and I can give you a lift." (Luz airbends herself onto Appa.) Luz offered to give her new friends a ride.
'We'd love a ride! Thanks!" (Amity runs to the side of the bison with Gus following from behind.)
"Oh no! I'm not getting on that fluffy snot monster!" Willow refused.
(While climbing on top of Appa with the help of Luz.) Are you hoping some other kind of monster will come along and give you a ride home? You know, before you freeze to death?" Amity asked.
Willow opens her mouth in defiance and point at Amity, ready to retaliate, but she cannot think of anything. She sighs and bows her head in consent and defeat.
The camera switches to a shot where the three friends are sitting on Appa's saddle. Willow has her arms crossed in front of her with a sulking expression on her face while Amity and Gus are full of excitement and anticipation.
"Okay, first time flyers, hold on tight! Appa, yip-yip!" Luz commanded Appa to fly.
"Come on, Appa. Yip-yip!" Luz tried again but again nothing.
(Sarcastically.) "Wow, that was truly amazing …" Willow said sarcastically.
[Amity shoots her friend an angry glance.) "Appa's just a little tired. A little rest and he'll be soaring through the sky. You'll see." Luz told Willow. [Amity smiles at Luz, who returns this gesture. When she wants to move back, she realizes that he is still smiling at her.)
(Uncomfortably.) Why are you smiling at me like that?" Amity wanted to know.
Oh, I was smiling?" Luz asked. (Flattered, Amity smiled back.)
Willow throws her head back and sticks his tongue out in disgust while groaning loudly. Amity glares at her while Appa continues to make his way through the icy sea, flapping his tail in the water.
The picture tilts up and fades away to reveal Lilith standing on the helm of her ship, staring into the distance. The young woman is approached by Faldo.
"I'm going to bed now." [Yawns and stretches.] "Yep, a man needs his rest." Falls told her. [After a short pause, he abandons his try at a veiled suggestion and delivers his request more clearly, his tone tired.] Lilith, you need some sleep. Even if you're right, and the Avatar is alive, you won't find him. Your father, grandfather and great-grandfather all tried and failed." Faldo exclaimed.
"Because their honor didn't hinge on the Avatar's capture. Mine does. This coward's hundred years in hiding are over." Lilith told him.
The scene fades to Appa who is still swimming in the water. Luz now lies lazily on his back, his arms tucked under her head. Amity crawls to the front of the saddle again to have a better look at the girl. She leans on the front of the saddle and rests her head on her arm.
"Hey." Amity greeted her.
"Hey. What'cha thinkin' about?" Luz wanted to know.
'I guess I was wondering, your being an airbender and all, if you had any idea what happened to the Avatar?" Amity asked.
"Oh, no. I didn't know her. I mean, I knew people that knew her, but I didn't. Sorry." Liz apologized (She smiles weakly at Amity.)
"Okay. Just curious." [She slants her eyes in disappointment for a second before smiling again at Luz.] "Good night." Amity exclaimed.
"Sleep tight." Luz answered
Luz uncomfortably turns around and a look of guilt crosses his face. The camera switches to another wide shot of Appa swimming through the vast sea, reflecting the brilliant sunlight.
The scene switches to a dream of Lus's, colored in various shades of gray. Luz is sleeping on Appa's saddle while clouds build around and ahead of him. Lightning splits the sky and the rumble of the following thunder awakens him. He shoots up and looks around. In the next shot it is raining and Luz is sitting on Appa's head again, holding the reigns and screaming at the top of her lungs in terror while they go down. Appa and Luz splash into the waters of the ocean. Appa resurfaces again, growls, but is quickly subdued anew by another wave. Both Luz and Appa sink unconscious into the water. As Luz releases the reigns and drifts off, his eyes and tattoos suddenly start to glow brightly. He slams his fists together, creating a bluish-white sphere that encases Appa and herself. As the air sphere slowly solidifies into an icy globe, a voice permeates the dream.
"Luz? Luz! Wake up." [Luz shoots up, throwing the covers of her body and gasping for air. Amity perches beside her and stands up as she sees that Luz is awake.] "It's okay, we're in the village now! Come on, get ready. [She points to the door of the tent.] Everyone's waiting to meet you." Amity told her.
"Luz, this is the entire village." [Points to the line of villagers in front of them.] "Entire village, Luz." Amity introduces the entire village to Luz.
Luz bows respectfully toward the villagers, but they cower away in fear, bringing a surprised look to Amity and Luz's faces. Willow and Gus just watch from a distance.
(Uncomfortably.) "Uh, why are they all looking at me like that? Did Appa sneeze on me?" Luz wanted to know.
Luz checks her clothing while an elderly woman steps forward out of the line of villagers.
"Well, no one has seen an airbender in a hundred years. We thought they were extinct, until my grandson and his friends found you." The elderly woman told her.
(Shocked disbelief.) "Extinct?" Luz exclaimed in disbelief.
(Gesturing.) "Luz, this is my grandmother." Gus introduced his grandmother to her.
(Flatly, with a dull look on her face.) "Call me Gran-Gran." Gran gran said.
Willow walks toward Luz and abruptly snatches her staff out of her hands and starts to examine it.
[Annoyed.] "What is this, a weapon? You can't stab anything with this!" Willow exclaimed, annoyed.
(Luz uses a small air current to get her staff back.) It's not for stabbing! It's for airbending." Luz told her [She opens her staff into a glider, making Willow gasp in fright and covers her head with her hands.)
[Excited.] *Magic trick! Do it again!" The little village girl exclaimed with excitement.
"Not magic, airbending." [She moves her glider around her, visually demonstrating what she is talking about.] "It lets me control the air currents around my glider and fly." Luz explained.
(Mockingly states his disbelief.) "Ya know, last time I checked, humans can't fly!" Willow told her.
(Accepting Willow's challenge, smiling.) "Check again!" Luz told her.
Luz grabs hold of her glider and pushes herself off the ground, leaving Amity, Gus and Willow to cover their faces against the sudden wind. The village stares in awe as Luz makes some loops and turns in the sky.
(In admiration.) "She's flying!" The little village girl said.
(It's amazing!) Another village girl answered.
Luz's shadow passes over Amity, who is smiling broadly at her. Luz, intending to further impress the villagers, flies sideways and closes her eyes while grinning broadly. She promptly flies head-on into the village's watchtower, causing her head to be stuck in its side. Amity covers her mouth as she watches Luz struggle to extricate her head from the icy watchtower. Succeeding, she tumbles downward onto a pile of snow at the base of the tower that crumbled from the building. Amity immediately rushes to her side while Willow and Gus stare in shock at the damage inflicted on his watchtower.
(Shocked.) "My watchtower!" Willow said shocked.
Luz lies covered in snow at the base of the partially collapsed tower. Amity and some other girls of the tribe run toward Luz, smiling.
[Offering her hand to pull her out of the snow.] That was amazing!
Willow runs toward her watchtower and starts to pat it in the hope that she can save it from collapsing any further. While Luz spins her staff around to retract its wings, Willow is being knocked down by a large pack of snow that falls down making Gus laugh from seeing.
(Annoyed.) Great. You're an airbender, Gus's a waterbender. Together you two and Amity can just waste time all day long. (She wedges herself free from underneath the weight of the snow and stalks off.)
(Surprised and with admiration.) "You're a waterbender?" Luz asked
(Nervously.) "Well, sort of. Not yet." Gus told her.
"All right, no more playing. Come on, Gus, you have chores." Gran gran exclaimed.
Kanna leads Willow and Amity away from Luz. The surrounding villagers part to let the trio pass.
(Excitedly.) I told you, she's the real thing Gran-Gran! I finally found a bender to teach me!" Gus exclaimed.
Amity opens her eyes again and glances back toward Luz, who is surrounded by a bunch of kids. She smiles while her tongue is stuck to her staff.
[Muffled.] "See? Now my tongue is stuck to my staff!." Luz told the children.
Much to Luz's discomfort, one of the smaller village boys starts to yank her staff, pulling Luz along with every movement. The village kids laugh and applaud Luz as her tongue remains stuck to her staff.
The scene shifts to Lilith's ship where Lilith is facing two soldiers dressed in the uniforms of a firebending Fire Nation soldier. Kaldo is sitting on a small chair next to them.
[Sternly.] "Again." Kaldo told her.
Lilith opens the fight by spreading her arms in the direction of the two firebenders, showering them with flames. Her adversaries block Lilith's attack with ease. Lilith shifts her weight to duck under a retaliation blast of the firebender to her left. The firebender to her right jumps forward to aim a blast at Lilith's feet. The commander propels herself out of the way. She twists around in mid-air and directs another fire blast with her hand to the firebender that retaliated first, and another with her foot to the firebender that aimed for her feet. Both soldiers jump out of the way of Lilith's flames. Lilith lands and stretches her fists out toward her adversaries, ready to face another attack.
(Sighs while he gets up.) "No!" (Lilith lowers her arms and looks at her lieutenant.) Power in firebending comes from the breath (Kaldo moves his both hands up in front of him to emphasize the breathing motion.), not the muscles. [He stretches his left arm out as if he was sending a fire blast.] The breath becomes energy in the body. The energy extends past your limbs and becomes: fire! [Kaldo directs a fire blast at his commander that evaporates just before it would scorch her.] "Get it right this time."
(With suppressed anger, she walks toward her lieutenant and addresses him.) Enough! "I've been drilling this sequence all day." Teach me the next set! I'm more than ready!" Lilith told him.
"No, you are impatient." Faldo exclaimed. (He sits down again on his chair.) "You have yet to master your basics." Faldo said. (He yells his order.) "Drill it again!" Kaldo demanded.
Lilith clenches her teeth in anger. She turns around and suddenly directs a power fire kick toward one of the soldiers. The firebender attempts to stop the fire blast, but he is unable to and is thrown on his back by its power.
(The suppressed anger is very apparent in his voice.) "The sages tell us that the Avatar is the last airbender." Lilith told him (Close-up of Kaldo, who does not look pleased with the attitude of his commander.) She must be over a hundred years old by now. She's had a century to master the four elements! I'll need more than basic firebending to defeat her. (Starts to yell at her lieutenant.) You will teach me the advanced set!
(Concedes reluctantly. In a dire tone.) "Very well, (His expression changes completely to one of delight as he picks something up from the ground.) but first, I must finish my roast duck." Faldo said. (He quickly munches down the roast duck, much to the dismay of Lilith.)
The scene shifts back to the Southern Water Tribe, where it pans down to reveal Willow pacing to and fro, her arms behind her back.
(With a stern expression.) Now men, it's important that you show no fear when you face a firebender. (She brings out her club and holds it proudly.) In the Water Tribe, we fight to the last man standing! For without courage, how can we call ourselves men? (She clutches her fist to emphasize the word "men" as she stares down the people in front of him.)
The camera shifts positions to reveal that Willow is talking to six uninterested little boys.
(Waving his hand in the air.) "I gotta pee!" The southern water tribe boy exclaimed.
(Angrily.) "Listen! Until your fathers return from the War, they're counting on you to be the men of this tribe, and that means no potty breaks!" (She makes some wide arm gestures to emphasize her words again.)
"But I really gotta go!" The southern water tribe boy told her again.
(Sighs.) "Okay, who else has to go?" Willow wanted to know.
Every child immediately raises their hand. Willow is surprised for a second, before facepalming in frustration
(Runs up to Willow as the children leave. In a worried tone.) "Have you seen Luz? Gran-Gran said she disappeared over an hour ago." Gus said.
Luz appears from an outhouse igloo, pulling her pants up a bit higher
(Amused.) "Wow! Everything freezes in there." Luz exclaimed with Amity rolling her eyes smiling from hearing what she said
She points toward the bathroom with a smile on her face. Willow's "soldiers" halt beside Luz and laugh with her.
Willow is about to walk away when she hears the sound of children playing.
"Whee!" The village boy exclaimed happily while sliding on Appa.
He turns around, and the picture follows his gaze to reveal the village children sliding down Appa's tail like a slide. The end of the tail is propped upward, so the children are propelled into the air. They fly over Willow's spear, now serving as a mark that they need to cross before landing in a soft pile of snow. Amity laughs as a boy lands head-first in the snow, but Willow rushes forward pushing Gus out of her way.
[Yelling angrily.] Stop! Stop it right now! [The laughter of the children is stifled immediately and Appa turns his head to look at Willow, who accusingly directs his anger to Luz.] What's wrong with you?! We don't have time for fun and games with the War going on!
Willow takes back her spear and casts an annoyed glance at the laughing children who run past her.
(Slides down from Appa's head.) "What war? What are you talking about?" Luz wanted to know.
(Raises one eyebrow in disbelief.) "You're kidding, right?" Willow asked.
Luz looks questioningly at Willow, but the expression on her face changes to enthusiasm when she catches sight of an otter-penguin.
(Exclaims enthusiastically.) "Penguin!" Luz said excitedly
The animal is startled by Luz's outburst and quickly waddles off. Luz gives chase, racing past Amity, Gus and Willow, enhancing her speed with her airbending. She leaves a deep trail in the snow as she dashes after the penguin.
"She's kidding right?" Willow exclaimed.
The friends glance at each other, not sure what they need to think of Luz's reaction.
The scene fades away to show the otter-penguin habitat, where hundreds of otter-penguins are walking or sliding down icebergs. Amity and Gus approach the penguins in search of Luz.
"Luz?" Gus called her name.
(Chasing the penguins while laughing.) Hey, come on little guy. Wanna go sledding? (He jumps at a penguin, but the animal evades his attempt and Luz belly flops into the snow. She turns on her back and quickly erects herself with her airbending as Amity and Gus come up beside her.] "Heh heh. we have a way with animals." Amity told her.
(Having grabbed the tail of a penguin, she holds on as it pulls her through the snow for a short way before letting go and looking up at Amity and Gus.) "You got a deal! Just one little problem ... (She airbends herself into a sitting position.) I'm an airbender, not a waterbender. Isn't there someone in your tribe who can teach you?
(Sadly.) "No. You're looking at the only waterbender in the whole South Pole." Gus said to her
This isn't right. A waterbender needs to master water. (She thinks for a moment.) What about the North Pole? There's another Water Tribe up there, right? Maybe they have waterbenders who could teach you.
Maybe, but we haven't had contact with our friend's tribe in a long time. It's not exactly "turn right at the second glacier". It's on the other side of the world." Gus exclaimed.
But you forget, I have a flying bison. (She happily points at herself.) Appa and I can personally fly you to the North Pole. Gus, we're going to find you a master!
(Unsure.) "That's ... I mean, I don't know. We've never left home before." Gus said as Amity pinched the bridge of her nose
Well, you think about it, but in the meantime, can you teach me to catch one of these penguins?" Luz asked.
(Mockingly imitating a teacher.) Okay, listen closely, my young pupil. (Inclines her head toward Luz.) Catching penguins is an ancient and sacred art. (He conjures a fish out of his sleeve.) Observe!
She tosses Luz the fish. As she catches it with an uncomprehending look on her face, the penguins immediately begin crowding her. She laughs as the penguins swarm over her, pulling luz down amidst their ranks.
"Hi hi hi! Ha, ha, ha!" Luz laughed.
The scene switches to a protruding iceberg that Luz Amity and Gus use as a slide, each sitting atop a penguin. They soar through the air for a moment before landing on the slope and continuing their journey downward. They race down and Luz uses another iceberg as a ramp to propel her into the air and to soar over and past Gus and Amity. They then in turn uses the next jump to land next to Luz again. The three laugh and shout out as they gleefully ride over snowy bumps.
(Happily.) We haven't done this since Amity and I were kids!" Gus told her.
"You still are a kid!" Luz exclaimed.
The Three ride through a tunnel of ice. Gus and Amity are in the lead and try to hold Luz back by constantly changing her direction when she wants to pass them. Luz solves this problem by increasing her speed with airbending, enabling her to race over the ceiling past Amity and Gus. The tunnel levels out on an open plain of ice where the three get off their rides. The plain itself is dominated by a large metal ship, elevated and held in place by a large protrusion of ice with the bow pointing toward the sky. Curious, luz gazes at it.
(In awe.) "Whoa! What is that?" Luz wanted to know.
(In a slightly dark tone.) "A Fire Navy ship. And a very bad memory for our people." Gus explained (Luz begins to approach the wreckage.) "Luz, stop! We're not allowed to go near it! The ship could be booby-trapped!" Amity said.
"If you want to be a bender, you have to let go of fear." Luz told them.
Gus and Amity ponder over that remark for a moment and walks toward Luz with a scared look upon their face. The three venture closer toward the ship. Luz helps Gus and Amity to climb some of the blocks of ice that lay beside the ship and they crawl through a hole in the hull of the ship. The three walk through the silent rooms of the shipwreck. Some white hamsters roam the otherwise deserted ship. Luz enters a room stocked with weapons in various places.
(His voice echoes through the room.) "This ship has haunted our tribe since Gran-Gran was a little girl." Gus said. [The camera shifts through the room, revealing all the weapons more closely.) "It was part of the Fire Nation's first attacks." Amity finished.
"Okay, back up. I have friends all over the world, even in the Fire Nation. (Luz picks up a Guan Dao to inspect it.) I've never seen any war." Luz told her friends.
"Luz, how long were you in that iceberg?" Gus asked.
[Uncertain.] "I don't know. A few days, maybe?" Luz was uncertain of her answer.
"I think it was more like a hundred years!" Amity answered.
(In full disbelief and slightly accusing.) What?! That's impossible! Do I look like a hundred-twelve-year-old girl to you?" Luz asked.
"Think about it. The War is a century old. You don't know about it because, somehow, you were in there the whole time! (Luz's expression changes to one of comprehension.) It's the only explanation." Gus explained.
Luz backs away and slumps to the floor in shock.
"A hundred years! (Saddened by his new discovery.) I can't believe it." Luz said in a sad tone.
(Squats beside her.) We're sorry, Luz. Maybe somehow there's a bright side to all this…" Gus exclaimed..
(Cheerfully.) "I did get to meet you two." Luz said.
(Smiling warmly at them while offering her hand.) Come on, let's get out of here." Gus told Luz.
Amity and Gus smile and pull her to Luz's feet and the three exit the room.
"Luz, let's head back, this place is creepy." Gus saud.
Luz ventures down yet another room with Gus and Amity on her trail. There, she trips over a thin rope; as he stumbles, metal bars slide downward over the entrance, barring it and trapping them inside.
"Huh?" Luz questioned.
They both run toward the bars and peek through them.
"What's that you said about booby traps?" Luz wanted to know.
The gears and engines of the shipwreck suddenly power up, beginning to function. In shock, Gus Amity and Luz follow the movements of the machines until suddenly, a flare is fired and explodes high in the sky.
"Uh oh... (Luz notices a hole in the roof of the ship and takes a surprised Gus and Amity into her arms.) Hold on tight!" Luz told the two.
Luz enhances the power of her jump with her airbending to jump several feet into the air through the hole.
The scene switches to Lilith, who is peering through a telescope. She follows every movement the trio makes as Luz, still holding Gus and Amity, jumps down the side of the ship.
The last airbender! (Luz Amity and Gus reach the ground again and Luz sets both of them down. They start to walk away.) Quite agile for her old age. (She turns and angrily yells to a soldier behind him.) Wake Kaldo! Tell him I found the Avatar. (Lilith peeks through her telescope again to see that Gus Amity and Luz are running now. Lilith follows the direction they are running in with her telescope and discovers that they must be headed for the village he spots.) As well as her hiding place…" Lilith explained.
Close-up of Lilith's right eye as she squints it to look in the direction of the Southern Water Tribe.
