Chapter 71
With a "buzz," the dagger trembled as it plunged deep into the wood.
Xue Yuan lowered his voice and smiled, "Chang Yuyan, you have to tell me the truth."
Cold sweat broke out on Chang Yuyan's forehead.
Xue Yuan flicked the dagger, and the exceptionally fine weapon produced a crisp trembling sound. Xue Yuan's voice had been raspy these past few days, like grinding sand. Even though his tone seemed fine, it could easily carry a threat. Moreover, his current tone definitely didn't qualify as good.
Xue Yuan chuckled, "If the Emperor hadn't mentioned me, you wouldn't have hurriedly come to the Xue residence to find me."
Chang Yuyan tried his best to remain calm. "You always serve by the Emperor's side, making others envious and jealous. Now that I've been summoned by the Emperor alone, can't I show off a little in front of you?"
Xue Yuan narrowed his eyes, his gaze deep and intense.
"What did the Emperor say to me?" Chang Yuyan forced a bitter smile. "And why should I hide it from you?"
His heart pounded in his chest. Nervousness and unease overwhelmed him.
He didn't know why he had to conceal his conversation with the Emperor, but he hadn't realized it while he was in the midst of it. Now, upon reflection, he realized that most of his conversation with the Emperor had been about Xue Yuan.
This realization instinctively made Chang Yuyan unwilling to reveal the truth to Xue Yuan.
He opened his folding fan and elegantly fanned himself a few times. After the cold sweat on his forehead disappeared, he smiled faintly. "Xue Jiuyao, why have you become so strange today?"
Xue Yuan continued staring at him.
His robe draped over his shoulder, unable to hide the determination in his brows and eyes. The dagger on the table still emitted a chilling gleam but gradually stopped trembling.
Xue Yuan withdrew his gaze, pulled out the dagger, and resumed carving the wood, murmuring to himself, "You're tougher than I thought."
Chang Yuyan didn't hear clearly. "What did you say?"
"Nothing," Xue Yuan lazily replied, "By the way, I'll show you something."
Xue Yuan called over a servant, who nodded after listening to his instructions and hurried off. After a moment, the servant returned, holding a curved blade, and presented it to Xue Yuan.
Xue Yuan picked up the blade, and Chang Yuyan couldn't help but approach for a closer look. The scabbard of the curved blade was adorned with intricate golden wirework, embellished with thousands of carefully crafted gemstones. The golden wires were distinct and evenly spaced from the hilt to the tip. Just by looking at the scabbard, one could determine that this curved blade was extraordinary.
The more exquisite the golden wirework, the more it belonged exclusively to the royal family. Chang Yuyan blurted out, "Did the Emperor reward you with this?"
Xue Yuan held the handle of the blade and drew it halfway out, producing a "clang" sound as the sharp edge of the blade met the scabbard, creating a lingering echo of clashing weapons.
"This is the reward I received on the Spring Hunt," Xue Yuan caressed the blade's surface. "Isn't it beautiful?"
Chang Yuyan could hardly take his eyes off it. "It's incredibly beautiful."
Xue Yuan smiled inexplicably. He withdrew the curved blade and made a swipe on the stone table, leaving a white mark on the gray surface.
Chang Yuyan exclaimed, "It's so sharp!"
"It's not just beautiful, it's truly sharp," Xue Yuan twirled the blade in his hand, causing Chang Yuyan to tremble with fear. Finally, he threw the blade back into its scabbard and turned around, smiling. "A good blade like this should be in the hands of someone who knows how to wield it."
Chang Yuyan sighed, "Indeed."
Two quarters of an hour later, Chang Yuyan rose to bid farewell to Xue Yuan. As soon as he stepped out of Xue Yuan's courtyard and before he could leave the Xue residence's main gate, he ran into Xue Yuan's mother, who was rushing anxiously.
Mrs. Xue was neatly dressed, and when she saw Chang Yuyan hadn't left yet, she visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
Chang Yuyan greeted Xue Yuan's mother with a bow, and she asked him to rise quickly, inquiring, "Yan ge, since you have a close relationship with Jiuyao, do you happen to know any exceptional and extraordinary men he has befriended?"
Xue Yuan insisted on going out to catch a glimpse of someone, even if he had to be carried out despite his severe injuries. It was evident that the person he wanted to see would never easily set foot in the Xue residence. No matter how you looked at it, it couldn't be Chang Yuyan.
Mrs. Xue seemed somewhat anxious, with a faint worry and concern on her face. Chang Yuyan felt puzzled and asked, "Why do you say this, Madam?"
"I see that you are the only one who comes to the mansion," Mrs. Xue forced a smile. "I thought Jiuyao might feel lonely on his own, so I wanted to ask if he has made friends with anyone exceptional of his age."
Chang Yuyan thought to himself, with Jiuyao's temperament, who could get along with him?
Like a gang of bandits and rogues, it seemed that only Chang Yuyan and his group were close to each other. Chang Yuyan pondered for a moment and hesitated before saying, "I don't know if they are friends or not, but if you're looking for an exceptional and extraordinary man, there is one. He is the son of Minister Chu, the Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Works, Chu Wei. He was the top scholar when we were classmates."
"Top scholar," Xue Yuan's wife pondered, "I see."
On that very day, Chu Wei heard about Mrs. Xue's visit to the residence.
Chu Wei paused for a moment, raised his head to look at his mother, and furrowed his brows. "The Xue residence?"
"Yes," Mrs. Chu replied, "Mrs. Xue is currently looking for a suitable match for her son and heard that you are unmarried as well. She specifically came to talk about matters concerning our children."
Chu Wei said, "The Chu family and the Xue family are not close."
Mrs. Chu said with anger, "Talking about matters can bring people closer, can't it? Perhaps Xue Yuan's mother is truly anxious. I understand her thoughts very well. Just like you, you are no less than the eldest son of the Xue family. You used the excuse of studying abroad and refused to come back for seven years, and now that you have become the top scholar and secured a government position, receiving high favor from the Emperor, matchmakers have practically flattened our doorstep. Yet, you are the only one unwilling, showing no concern for your elderly mother."
Chu Wei appeared lost in thought. Xue Yuan was actually going to have a blind date.
Wasn't this the perfect opportunity to put an end to his aspirations, being someone who harbored ill intentions towards the Emperor?
Chu Wei subtly curled his lips, lowered his gaze, and appeared to be listening to his mother's sermon, but his thoughts were already considering how to help Xue Yuan's mother and completely put an end to his intentions toward the Emperor.
The next day, Chu Wei accompanied the Minister of Imperial Censorate to discuss matters with Gu Yuanbai.
The affairs of the Imperial Censorate had come to a conclusion. After the Minister of Imperial Censorate departed, Chu Wei remained behind as a compiler in the Hanlin Academy, staying in front of Gu Yuanbai.
After dealing with state affairs, Gu Yuanbai took the opportunity during tea time to chat with him, saying with a smile, "Chu Qing is very busy."
Chu Wei felt slightly ashamed. "I am ashamed."
Gu Yuanbai's lips felt a bit dry, so he took a few more sips of tea. The warmth of the tea lightly stained his lips with a healthy rosy hue. He smiled gently and said, "Since we have some free time now, why don't you tell me about your experiences during your studies, Chu Qing?"
Chu Wei snapped back to attention, his expression becoming serious. He replied earnestly, "What does Your Majesty wish to know?"
Gu Yuanbai asked, "How many places have you been to?"
Chu Wei replied, "I traveled from the Grand Canal all the way south, and I have visited most of the provincial capitals and counties along the way."
"Did you delve into them deeply?"
Chu Wei smiled lightly, exuding an air of elegance and grace. "I spent seven years doing so."
Gu Yuanbai showed great respect, "Tell me about your observations and experiences in each place."
Chu Wei pondered for a moment and began his account. As a proud and renowned youth, he learned many things from the hermits he visited in various provincial capitals and counties.
Each of these erudite scholars had their own unique knowledge and perspectives on the world and its issues. Chu Wei saw and heard so much that he forgot about his own youthfulness. When he listened to those great scholars discussing the hardships of the world, he only remembered the hardships and forgot to take note of the positive aspects.
Consequently, during his subsequent travels, he only focused on the negative aspects.
As he spoke, Chu Wei's tone became slower, and a hint of confusion appeared in his eyes. Gu Yuanbai brushed away some tea leaves with his teacup and smiled, "Why don't you continue, Chu Qing?"
Chu Wei pursed his lips. "I'm not sure what else to say."
The shortcomings of each place were always the same, and talking about them would only be redundant.
Gu Yuanbai asked, "Why not talk about the local customs and dietary habits? Are there many merchants in different regions? Are the content of the official schools in the provincial capitals consistent with those in the capital? If not, what are the differences? Which aspects are beneficial, and which ones can be improved? Do you not know any of these?"
Chu Wei froze.
He remained in a daze for a long time, and it was only after a while that he snapped out of it, feeling somewhat absent-minded. "I have never paid attention to these matters."
Gu Yuanbai put down his teacup and sighed. That sigh caught Chu Wei's attention. Did the Emperor feel disappointed in him?
Chu Wei's lips turned pale as he lowered his gaze and said, "Your Majesty, I..."
"Chu Qing, you should know the purpose of your studies," Gu Yuanbai said in a gentle tone. "You should not only focus on the shortcomings of each place but also recognize their merits. Just like in the case of South Jing, where there are numerous mines. If you had known about this, you could have tailored its development based on this unique feature."
Chu Wei pondered for a moment and said, "I understand."
Upon reflection, it seemed that he hadn't learned much during his seven years of studying.
Chu Wei felt a mix of melancholy and relief. Suddenly, he smiled and said, "If possible in the future, I would like to accompany Your Majesty to revisit these places."
Gu Yuanbai chuckled, "That would be excellent."
Chu Wei's lips curved, and he suddenly remembered something his mother had mentioned before. With lowered eyes, he said, "Your Majesty, speaking of my studies, I recall an amusing anecdote."
Gu Yuanbai raised an eyebrow, becoming interested. "Tell me."
"There was an old woman in the village whose grown son refused to marry despite his age. The old woman was so frustrated that she dragged her son to visit households with daughters, asking everyone she met, 'Canmy son marry your daughter?'"
Seeing the Emperor laugh casually, Chu Wei continued, "A few days ago, my mother told me that Lady Xue in the Xue Residence has also started to worry. It seems she's been gathering information and preparing a marriage proposal for Mr. Xue."
Gu Yuanbai realized that Xue Yuan was already twenty-four years old, which, in ancient times, was considered quite late for marriage.
Unlike Gu Yuanbai, Xue Yuan was in excellent health and should indeed be considering marriage. Lady Xue had every reason to be anxious.
"That's good," Gu Yuanbai said. "Starting a family and establishing a career is a good thing."
Chu Wei saw no unusual expression on the Emperor's face, and his heart settled. He smiled casually and said, "If Lady Xue has set her sights on a particular young lady, General Xue is currently on his way to the northern frontier. I'm afraid there's little I can do. Perhaps, in that case, it might trouble Your Majesty to arrange the marriage for Mr. Xue."
Gu Yuanbai opened a memorial and smiled casually, saying, "Let's see."
Granting a marriage to Xue Jiuyao?
Chapter 72
Upon hearing about bestowing a marriage to Xue Yuan, he couldn't help but find it amusing. Deep inside, Gu Yuanbai let out a sigh.
Granting marriage? Unless the Xue family actively extended an invitation, he would not take the initiative to grant it. A paper marriage was burdensome for both individuals. Gu Yuanbai had no patience for such hasty matchmaking.
Having just mentioned Xue Yuan in the morning, in the afternoon, Xue Yuan sent a letter and a small wooden carving to Gu Yuanbai.
The wooden carving was a curved blade, with a smooth and polished surface, adorned with rough engravings. Due to its small size, the blade was thick and incapable of inflicting harm. It resembled a toy used to amuse a child.
Gu Yuanbai held the wooden knife in his hand, examining it. Not detecting anything suspicious, he tossed it aside and picked up the envelope placed beside it.
The letter paper was pristine white, emitting a faint scent of wine. Gu Yuanbai had a keen sense of smell, and as soon as he caught a whiff of the wine aroma, an image of Xue Yuan, seemingly smiling, holding a wine jug and dropping a bottle from the second floor of the Zhaoyuan Tower, flashed in his mind.
He chuckled, opened the letter, and read the single sentence at the top: "My chess skills have surpassed Chang Yu's, and I have already prepared the game and tea, awaiting Your Majesty's visit."
The handwriting was elaborate and the single line almost filled the entire page. Even when ill, Xue Yuan could still indulge in such antics.
Gu Yuanbai showed the letter to the people on either side. After Tian Fusheng finished reading it, he couldn't help but burst into laughter. "Sir Xue is so confident. He must truly be one of the best in chess."
Gu Yuanbai hadn't noticed before, but now he realized it. Why wouldn't he? Xue Yuan was praising himself, and in ancient times, gentlemen were often modest. But upon closer inspection, it seemed that Xue Yuan's shamelessness had reached its limit.
Unable to contain himself, Gu Yuanbai curled his lips.
The Chief Guard expressed concern, "Your Majesty, it seems that Sir Xue's health is not well. He must be unable to move, which is why he invited Your Majesty to visit the Xue residence."
"I am aware," Gu Yuanbai replied.
His fingers involuntarily touched the jade thumb ring. Although he had changed to a different one, it still felt smooth to the touch. Gu Yuanbai lowered his head, gazing at the translucent white jade, and recalled Xue Yuan's appearance when he fell into the water. His eyelids twitched, and he said, "Then let's go and see."
In the afternoon, a gentle breeze blew, and thick layers of clouds covered the sky, giving it a faint yellowish hue.
The summer palace was magnificent, with springs and mountains both inside and outside. The lush greenery brought a refreshing atmosphere. The residences of the royal officials and ministers were built not far from the palace, enveloped in the constant melodies of birds and the fragrance of flowers.
Chu Wei remained silent as he followed closely beside the Emperor. He seemed burdened with worries, and occasionally, when he glanced at the Emperor's figure, his eyes appeared filled with disappointment and frustration.
Although he possessed a handsome appearance, such a demeanor made people feel all the more sympathetic towards him. However, if the person causing his disappointment was the Emperor, his beauty would no longer be appreciated.
Suddenly, the Chief Guard turned to Chu Wei and said, "Sir Chu, when you make mistakes, it's best to recognize them and make amends."
Chu Wei snapped back to attention. "What do you mean, Zhang?," he asked with a faint expression of confusion.
The Chief Guard spoke forcefully, "Both Sir Chu and I are servants of the Emperor. The Emperor is the ruler, and we are his subjects."
"And?" Chu Wei's expression remained calm, tinged with a hint of doubt.
Seeing his feigned ignorance, the Chief Guard's face turned red. "Sir Chu, remember this, neither I nor Sir Xue will allow anyone with ill intentions to approach the Emperor."
Chu Wei's eyebrows furrowed instantly, his eyes turning cold, radiating a sharp chill.
Chu Wei appeared serene, like a gentle breeze and a clear moonlit night, but deep inside his heart lay dark and twisted thoughts of rebellion. In contrast, Xue Yuan, despite his audacity and arrogance, at least had an open and straightforward demeanor, consistent both inside and out.
As soon as his true nature was exposed, Chu Wei's expression changed, didn't it?
The Chief Guard's impression of this literati decreased by another notch.
Chu Wei already understood what was going on. His expression turned grim, but suddenly, a tender child's voice rang out from ahead, saying, "Uncle."
The top scholar's eyebrows twitched, and he instinctively looked up. Only then did he realize that they had unknowingly arrived at the entrance of Chu Wei's residence. Standing at the gate of the Chu residence was a well-dressed and well-behaved young child. Upon seeing him, the child smiled modestly and exclaimed, "My nephew!"
Chu Wei remained silent for a while. The Emperor turned his head, his eyes filled with amusement, and said, "Is this the elder of the top scholar?"
The gatekeeper of the Chu residence had seen the Emperor before, and now he stood to the side, afraid to make any rash movements. He hurriedly whispered a reminder, "Young Master, this is the Emperor."
The young child's eyes slowly widened, and he quickly knelt down, performing a deep bow to Gu Yuanbai. "I pay my respects to the Emperor," he said.
"Please rise," Gu Yuanbai said, "Can you get up?"
The young child used his hands and feet to climb back up, holding himself respectfully with his hands clasped together. He glanced at Chu Wei several times, anxious for him to teach him how to speak to the Emperor.
The child appeared to be around five or six years old but carried the demeanor of a little adult. Gu Yuanbai walked over, lifted his robe, and sat on the steps in front of Chu Wei's residence. He looked at the bewildered child and asked, "What's your name?"
The child joined his chubby hands together and solemnly bowed. "I am named Chu Yi. My parents at home call me Chu Xiaosi."
"Brother Yi," Gu Yuanbai smiled and gestured towards Chu Wei, "Do you call him nephew?"
"He's my nephew," Chu Xiaosi replied, "My nephew is amazing, he became the top scholar!"
Chu Wei's ears turned slightly red, barely noticeable. After the Emperor praised him as "truly remarkable," the redness deepened. In a short while, both of his ears were distinctly flushed.
Gu Yuanbai smiled faintly, "Since you are the elder of the top scholar, if he makes a mistake, will you discipline him?"
Chu Xiaosi nodded, his expression serious. "If my nephew does something wrong, I won't protect him. As the books say, 'If the child does not learn, it is the father's fault.'"
"Correct," Gu Yuanbai sighed, "Today, the top scholar made a small mistake, which has put me in a bad mood. As his elder, please advise me on what to do."
Chu Xiaosi froze. He looked at the Emperor, then at Chu Wei, and finally assumed a more authoritative posture and lectured, "Nephew, how could you behave like this?"
Chu Wei couldn't help but look towards the Emperor, who noticed his gaze and blinked at him with a smile. Chu Wei realized that the Emperor was just teasing him, and he couldn't help but let out a laugh, lowering his head.
Chu Xiaosi rarely had the opportunity to display his elder's authority. After lecturing Chu Wei, his little face turned red with excitement. Suppressing his excitement, he performed a salute and said, "Emperor, I have finished teaching."
Gu Yuanbai pondered for a moment. "Oh? Does the top scholar acknowledge his mistake?"
Chu Wei raised an eyebrow helplessly. "I acknowledge my mistake, Your Majesty."
"Considering your uncle's face, I'll let you off this time," Gu Yuanbai said with a smile. "Don't waste your little uncle's efforts."
Chu Xiaosi blushed even more intensely.
Tian Fusheng struggled to hold back his laughter as he brought a cushion and softly said, "Your Majesty, let me place a cushion for you. The ground is too cold, which isn't good for you."
Gu Yuanbai stood up decisively. "No need to sit anymore, let's go."
Just as Chu Wei was about to follow, Gu Yuanbai glanced at him and smiled, saying, "Since we've arrived at Minister Chu's residence, Minister Chu can take Brother Yi back home. There's no need to accompany me any further."
Chu Wei didn't say anything. His uncle ran over and hugged his leg, and Chu Wei bent down to hold the child in his arms, looking at the Emperor. Unable to hold back, he said, "Your Majesty, look at the sky. It seems it will rain in a while. How about resting in the minister's residence first?"
Gu Yuanbai looked towards the sky, where a yellowish moisture lingered heavily. The wind carried a chill, rustling the green trees. It indeed seemed like rain was approaching.
Gu Yuanbai pondered for a moment, but before he could come to a conclusion, he felt a coolness on his cheek. He reached up and wiped his face, touching a trace of water.
The dry ground started to show small wet marks. It was raining.
Raindrops fell one by one, gradually becoming denser, landing on the chessboard.
On both sides of the chessboard were pastries, tea, and a wine pot. The wine pot was left open, and the fragrance of the wine mixed with the aroma of the tea. Now, these items were being soaked by the rain drop by drop.
Beside the stone table, Xue Yuan remained seated, straight and motionless. He wore a black robe, his hair neatly tied up. He was as silent as a statue.
A raindrop fell from his forehead and slid down his chin.
A servant in the corridor hurriedly approached, holding an oiled paper umbrella, but Xue Yuan spoke before the servant reached the courtyard. He said, "Don't come over."
The servant's footsteps abruptly stopped. "Eldest Young Master, it's raining!"
"Hasn't your master been caught in the rain enough?" Xue Yuan held the wine pot in his hand, swirled it around, and, accompanied by the rain, lifted his head to take a few big gulps.
The servant anxiously said, "Eldest Young Master, the doctor said you must not drink alcohol or get wet in the rain."
"I have already gotten wet," Xue Yuan waved the wine pot. "I have already drunk."
He stood up, and soft raindrops fell on his face. At this late summer moment, the rain seemed much gentler, but no matter how gentle the rain, it still felt cold when it soaked the body.
He was accustomed to deceiving others, but his heart was crueler than anyone else's.
Xue Yuan walked to the end of the corridor.
The servants in the corridor finally breathed a sigh of relief. Some brought towels, others brought ginger soup, but only Xue Yuan stood motionless at the edge of the corridor, watching the rain curtain gradually intensify from sparse to dense.
He stood straight, his robe draped over him, occupying a large area by himself. Xue Yuan had sharp eyes. By just squinting slightly, he could see the carefully prepared pastries on the stone table being gradually scattered by the rain.
Xue Yuan took another sip of wine and turned his head to ask, "Where is he?"
Just as he finished asking, a drenched person ran into the rain curtain. "Eldest Young Master, I saw His Majesty entering Minister Chu's residence at the corner of the lane."
The mansions of these royal ministers surrounding the summer palace were clustered together. The Chu and Xue residences were quite close, with one at the front and the other at the back. However, since Xue Yuan had just arrived at the summer palace, he had received a severe punishment of fifty lashes and hadn't appeared much in front of the mansion.
Upon hearing this, the servants held their breath, afraid that Xue Yuan would get angry. But Xue Yuan actually smiled and said, "He really came."
Xue Yuan's mood improved significantly. He grinned and reached out behind him, saying, "Give me the umbrella."
The servant handed him the oiled paper umbrella, and Xue Yuan asked again, "What about the bird?"
Another servant ran over and brought the birdcage hanging in the corridor. Inside the cage was not a rare and precious bird but a small sparrow with gray feathers.
Xue Yuan lifted the birdcage in front of him, looked at the little sparrow inside, and chuckled playfully. "Tell me, when His Majesty's jade thumb ring was taken away, did he intentionally let you take it, or did you really snatch it yourself?"
Naturally, the bird couldn't understand his words. It turned its head left and right and started pecking at its feathers.
Xue Yuan grinned, opened the umbrella, and carried the birdcage as he leisurely walked out of the Xue residence.
Chapter 73
Gu Yuanbai gazed at the curtains inside the room, while Chu Wei sat beside him, playing the qin to the sound of rain.
The six arts of a nobleman were the rites, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy, and mathematics. These six arts were compulsory subjects for ancient noblemen. Gu Yuanbai was a pseudo nobleman, not as proficient as a genuine nobleman of ancient times.
Chu Wei, on the other hand, exemplified the standard of an outstanding ancient nobleman.
Although Gu Yuanbai couldn't play the guqin, it didn't hinder his appreciation for it. Tian Fusheng had prepared a pot of hot tea and poured a cup for him. Gu Yuanbai held the tea in his hand, savoring its aroma, watching the curtains of rain outside, feeling relaxed, and comfortably narrowing his eyes.
After a while, a servant from the Chu residence hurriedly arrived and reported from outside, "Young Master, there is someone at the door who wishes to pay a visit. It's the eldest son from the Xue residence."
Chu Wei's fingers paused on the strings of the qin, the melodious music abruptly ceasing. He looked up at Gu Yuanbai and said, "Your Majesty, it must be Mr. Xue who has come."
Gu Yuanbai lazily responded, "Let him come in."
After a while, Xue Yuan, holding an umbrella and carrying a birdcage, entered the view of the two individuals at a leisurely pace.
Xue Yuan's steps were slow, his figure faintly obscured by the rain curtains. He was dressed in black attire. Gu Yuanbai sat up and focused his gaze on the birdcage in Xue Yuan's hand. As soon as Xue Yuan walked into the corridor, Gu Yuanbai asked, "Where did you get the bird?"
Approaching closer, Xue Yuan placed the birdcage in front of Gu Yuanbai and crouched down as well. He casually opened the cage and said with a smile, "I said I wanted to catch a bird to show Your Majesty, but as soon as I opened the cage, this little thing flew in."
His hand reached into the cage and held the sparrow in his palm. "Your Majesty, take a look. Does it resemble the bird that took away your jade finger ring last time?"
The captured sparrow's body protruded halfway from Xue Yuan's palm. Gu Yuanbai raised an eyebrow and said, "Don't sparrows all look the same?"
He raised his hand to touch the bird, noticing the dull gray feathers of the sparrow, not as resplendent as those of precious birds, yet touching it felt quite comfortable. Xue Yuan's gaze fell upon Gu Yuanbai's thumb, where he wore a white jade finger ring.
Xue Yuan's lips curled up. "Your Majesty is right, sparrows all look the same. Who can tell them apart?"
Withdrawing his gaze, Xue Yuan noticed Chu Wei and greeted him politely, "Mr. Chu, it has been a long time."
As soon as he saw Xue Yuan, Chu Wei recalled the words spoken by the Chief Guard earlier. He couldn't bring himself to have any favorable impression of Xue Yuan. Nodding coldly, he responded, "Mr. Xue."
As Gu Yuanbai's fingertips caressed the sparrow, they occasionally brushed lightly against Xue Yuan's hand. After several times, it became itchy and uncomfortable. Suddenly, Xue Yuan reached out and held his fingertips, lifting Gu Yuanbai's hand slightly, and said with a smile, "Your Majesty, the feathers are here. You've touched my hand."
"...," Gu Yuanbai withdrew his hand, no longer touching it, and expressionlessly said, "Xue Qing is considerate."
Xue Yuan smiled, put the sparrow back into the cage, and placed it aside. He slowly stood up, glanced around, and naturally assumed the air of a host. "Where is the chessboard?"
Someone nearby promptly brought the chessboard over. Gu Yuanbai glanced at it expressionlessly and said, "Xue Qing and Chu Qing, play a game."
Xue Yuan wasn't disappointed either. He extended his hand and courteously said, "Mr. Chu, please."
Chu Wei and Xue Yuan both took their seats, each taking a side of the black and white chess pieces. They remained silent, seemingly harmonious, but on the chessboard, they were in an unrelenting confrontation.
Gu Yuanbai watched with intermittent interest. He finally understood why Chang Yu Yan said that Xue Jiuyao's chess style resembled his. The chessboard was like a battlefield, testing one's ability to strategize and think in terms of the overall situation.
No matter how proper and mysterious Xue Yuan pretended to be, his essence was still like a mad dog. The sharpness was evident from the beginning, aiming straight for the enemy's vital point.
Gu Yuanbai knew halfway through that Chu Wei was destined to lose.
Chu Wei's chess style was stable and deep-rooted. He thought three steps ahead, meticulously planned, and had played chess with Gu Yuanbai before, so he was familiar with this style. But familiarity didn't help in this case. No matter how steady the board was, constantly evading would eventually reveal a flaw.
Gu Yuanbai stood up, walked to the corridor, and gazed at the rain. He listened to the sound of rain and the chess game, closing his eyes.
After a while, a warm feeling approached from behind. Xue Yuan draped his coat over Gu Yuanbai's shoulders and then walked to the side. "Your Majesty enjoys reading, and it turns out you also like watching the rain."
"It's soothing to listen to," Gu Yuanbai replied, feeling somewhat fatigued. "Rainy days are suitable for resting."
Xue Yuan asked, "Feeling tired?"
Gu Yuanbai responded, "Xue Qing, go and attend to your bird."
Xue Yuan chuckled softly, "My bird is right here with me."
His words were light, and Gu Yuanbai thought he had misheard. His eyelid twitched as he turned to Xue Yuan with a doubtful look, "What did you say?"
"The bird I brought for you to see is inside the house," Xue Yuan said, "What's the point of looking at it? You can't even understand its words."
"Interesting remark," Gu Yuanbai said, chuckling. "Xue Qing, are you trying to make the birds understand what you say? Amusing."
There were tiny droplets of rain on his forehead, carried in by the wind. Xue Yuan's voice suddenly softened. "Your Majesty, it's raining outside. Don't stand so close."
However, his voice was hoarse, and that softness was lost within the gravelly throat.
Almost simultaneously, a warm voice came from behind both of them. The voice was clear and mellow, as pleasing as pearls threaded on jade, melodious and harmonious. "Your Majesty, come inside and take shelter from the rain."
The winner was decided.
Xue Yuan smiled faintly and followed Gu Yuanbai into the house.
The room felt stuffy. When Chu Wei and Xue Yuan were together, neither of them spoke. Fortunately, the rain soon stopped, taking no more than half an hour.
Gu Yuanbai had no intention of staying longer at Chu Wei's residence. He was about to leave when Chu Wei remembered something and hurriedly said, "Your Majesty, please wait."
He turned to fetch something but caught sight of Xue Yuan from the corner of his eye. With a cold tone, he changed his words, "Xue Daren, will you accompany me to fetch some warm clothing for His Majesty?"
Xue Yuan narrowed his eyes and walked forward. The two of them disappeared together at the end of the corridor.
Gu Yuanbai watched their figures, both tall and healthy-looking young men. Upon closer inspection, they seemed perfectly matched.
After observing for a while, he looked away but suddenly noticed a small head peeking out from behind a pillar. Gu Yuanbai smiled. "Yi Ge'er, come over."
Chu Xiaosi emerged from behind the pillar, looking ashamed. He clenched his clothes tightly and respectfully apologized, "This humble servant is not an ignorant child. This humble servant came to find my nephew."
Gu Yuanbai said, "But your nephew is not here now."
Chu Xiaosi looked up, confused. "Then where my nephew?"
Gu Yuanbai found mischievous pleasure in well-behaved and obedient children like him.
"As for your nephew," Gu Yuanbai pretended to ponder for a moment, then smiled suggestively, "Yi Ge'er, I had a remarkably delicious dish earlier that you probably haven't tasted."
The young boy swallowed and respectfully asked, "Please enlighten me, Your Majesty."
"Deep-fry Chu Wei in a pot of oil, then coat it with sauce and garnish it with scallions," Gu Yuanbai's lips curled up, deliberately lowering his voice. "It's incredibly delicious, enough to make Xue Yuan next door cry with envy."
Chu Xiao Si was frightened, his face turned pale, and tears welled up as he sobbed, "Did my nephew… my nephew got eaten?"
"Ahem." When a child genuinely cried, Gu Yuanbai felt guilty again. He touched his nose and was about to playfully reveal the truth when Tian Fusheng suddenly started coughing.
Gu Yuanbai paused and turned around. Xue Yuan and Chu Wei were standing not far away, one raising an eyebrow while the other had a complex expression, both looking at Gu Yuanbai.
Gu Yuanbai questioned, "What are you two standing there for? Hurry over."
As Chu Wei approached, Chu Xiaosi threw himself into his embrace, crying. Chu Wei comforted his fourth uncle in a low voice, and his complicated feelings gradually turned into a mix of amusement and exasperation.
Tian Fusheng took the cloak and draped it over the Emperor's shoulders. The Emperor coughed twice, and Chu Wei accompanied his fourth uncle to escort the Emperor outside the mansion. The uncle and nephew bowed to the Emperor together, waiting respectfully for his departure.
On the way, Xue Yuan followed behind Gu Yuanbai and suddenly asked, "Your Majesty, why would I be envious to the point of tears?"
Gu Yuanbai countered, "Why are you still following me?"
Xue Yuan still held the birdcage in his hand and halted at his words. "Then I will bid farewell to Your Majesty here."
"..." A vague sense of annoyance surged within Gu Yuanbai. This inexplicable annoyance suppressed, he was about to stride away when Xue Yuan's hoarse voice called out from behind, "Your Majesty."
Gu Yuanbai paused his steps.
"The jade finger ring of Your Majesty has been changed," Xue Yuan said. "I wonder if the previous one is still there?"
Gu Yuanbai pursed his lips and remained silent.
"Your Majesty mentioned fulfilling one of my requests before," Xue Yuan's voice grew softer. "I've thought about it, perhaps it can be done now."
"If Your Majesty doesn't like that jade finger ring, please don't throw it away. Return it to me. I like that jade finger ring very much, and I can keep it for my future wife."
"Xue Qing, the world belongs to me," Gu Yuanbai spoke with authority, his voice turning cold. "My jade finger ring, even if I don't like it, will stay well-preserved in my private treasury."
This statement, just like his declaration of "My empire is as picturesque as a painting," made Xue Yuan's heart beat faster.
Gu Yuanbai's domineering words resonated perfectly with Xue Yuan's feelings. The question remains: does Gu Yuanbai have any feelings for Xue Yuan?
A gust of wind blew, teasing the tip of their noses. Gu Yuanbai coughed softly. The coughs were heavy and relentless, one after another, leaving him with barely any respite.
People around him panicked, calling out "Your Majesty" and "handkerchief," but there was no hot water nearby, and no one dared to approach him in a fluster to support him or pat his back.
Xue Yuan sighed and quickly walked forward, pushing aside everyone blocking the way such as guards and eunuchs. Step by step, he approached Gu Yuanbai and then embraced him, allowing him to lean against his chest, gently stroking his bony back.
Gu Yuanbai gripped his clothes tightly, his fingers turning pale. He leaned his head against Xue Yuan's chest, relying heavily on him for support.
As Xue Yuan comforted him, he looked up at the dark sky in the distance.
Gu Yuanbai coughed until he felt dizzy and his head throbbed. When his hands weakened and threatened to slip away, Xue Yuan held them firmly.
"Your health has always been so poor," Xue Yuan said in a low voice, like a drenched little puppy.
"But just because you are physically weak," he continued, "doesn't mean you can always bully me."
Chapter 74
Gu Yuanbai understood what Xue Yuan meant.
Because of his weak health and Xue Yuan's fondness for him, whenever he fell ill, Xue Yuan would also feel distressed.
He referred to this as "bullying him."
No matter how anyone listened to it, it sounded profound and seemed to carry a confession.
Xue Yuan was deliberately showing weakness and employing a strategy of letting go to gain control. How could Gu Yuanbai not see through it?
Gu Yuanbai was annoyed, particularly by Xue Yuan's deliberate probing. Every word and action was a test, repeatedly probing him. What did he want to test? What did he want to see from his attitude?
Gu Yuanbai coughed and couldn't utter a word. When he was finally able to speak and stand upright, Xue Yuan let go, no longer requiring him to express his understanding.
Gu Yuanbai took the handkerchief, looked at him coldly, and thought to himself, "Here it comes again, another pretentious attempt to test him."
"Let's go," Gu Yuanbai covered his mouth and nose with the handkerchief, coughed a few more times, "back to the palace."
Xue Yuan obediently waited for the emperor to leave. Once the emperor's entourage was out of sight, he turned around, leisurely carrying the birdcage on his way back.
The sparrow in the cage suddenly started fluttering its wings, and Xue Yuan lowered his head to take a look, chuckling, "What are you hitting against? Do you want to die that badly?"
He glanced at the plaque of the Chu Mansion not far away, suddenly realizing something, "Or is it that you've taken a liking to Master Chu?"
The sparrow's chirping grew louder, and Xue Yuan opened the cage, allowing the sparrow to soar into the sky.
With his gaze no longer fixed on the plaque of the Chu Mansion, Xue Yuan hummed the melody of the poem that Chang Yu wrote for him, in a cheerful mood.
After a few more days, Kong Yilin and his entourage finally arrived in the western capital.
The main army stayed outside the western capital, while Kong Yilin and the supervisory officials who returned from Lizhou hurriedly rode their horses to the imperial summer palace in Hebei to meet the emperor.
Gu Yuanbai had already received the news in advance. Qin Sheng stayed behind with the Eastern Wing Guard to guard the prisoners. The Eastern Wing Guards under the emperor's command were in high spirits, as they must not let anything happen to the prisoners at their own doorstep.
When these officials, who had traveled a long distance, arrived, the palace had already prepared bathing water and meals.
Kong Yilin and the other officials were led to the bathing area. After bathing, they changed into clean and tidy robes. Looking at each other, the fatigue and weariness on their faces had disappeared.
The Chief Imperial Censor glanced around and a smile appeared on his stern face. "Now that I see everyone, it seems you all have regained some vitality."
Another official laughed heartily, "We are favored by the Emperor, and the bathing water is comfortable. There must be something invigorating in it. Even these clothes fit perfectly. All the exhaustion has been washed away, and I feel extremely comfortable now."
Someone interjected abruptly, "But I'm hungry."
Everyone burst into laughter. A eunuch stepped forward in time and led them to the dining area.
Master Mi and Kong Yilin engaged in idle conversation. "Mr. Kong, your beard has grown."
Kong Yilin smiled wryly and said, "As a tall man, once my beard grows, it looks even more wild. I just hope it won't startle the Emperor later."
"Why would the Emperor mind that?" Master Mi chuckled and stroked his own beard. "Our Emperor is the most benevolent."
Kong Yilin smiled and nodded, agreeing with Master Mi's words.
Gu Yuanbai felt sorry for this group of officials, so he made sure the imperial kitchen put in a lot of effort. By the time the officials finished bathing, the dishes were already served, and there was an abundance of food and drinks.
Seeing the delicious feast laid out before them, the officials' stomachs rumbled, and their mouths watered. The leading eunuch chuckled and said, "The Emperor has instructed that the officials should dine first. Once you are satisfied, you can proceed to the meeting together."
"We will be waiting outside. If any of you need more wine or tea, just let us know."
The eunuchs all retreated and waited at the door, ready to take orders. With the absence of these palace attendants, many people couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief.
Master Mi took the lead and sat down. He rarely felt so relaxed. "Gentlemen, no need to be formal. This is the Emperor's sincere gesture towards us. Let us raise our cups and enjoy the feast to our heart's content."
After the bath, it was a feast. When the officials were satiated and content, their faces glowed, and the exhaustion from their rushed journey had dissipated.
Only then did Gu Yuanbai summon them.
The officials looked vibrant as they saluted Gu Yuanbai. Master Mi, the Chief Imperial Censor, respectfully bowed, "I pay my respects to Your Majesty!"
"Please rise," Gu Yuanbai smiled and praised them repeatedly, "Gentlemen, your efforts on this journey have been remarkable. Discovering so many corrupt officials and parasites who exploit the people, We, this seat, am deeply gratified. It is because of all of you that our Da Heng is thriving, and the people can live in peace and prosperity."
The officials quickly humbly declined, and Master Mi stepped forward, reporting some important matters from their trip to Gu Yuanbai.
Each of them presented a written report, including reports from local officials to prevent excessive anti-corruption measures and abuse of power by the inspectors in the capital.
While Gu Yuanbai looked at the reports, he listened to Master Mi's words. In fact, these words were already included in the reports, but Master Mi wanted to ensure that they were detailed enough.
After he finished speaking, Tian Fusheng personally served a cup of tea. Master Mi hurriedly expressed his gratitude, "Thank you, Your Excellency."
"Master Mi, you have handled things well," Gu Yuanbai nodded in agreement. "Whether it is dealing with the bandits in Lizhou or punishing corrupt officials, it aligns with my intentions."
"I am ashamed," Master Mi said, "Your Majesty had already established regulations before the anti-corruption campaign. The severity of punishment is determined by the amount of embezzlement. We officials are simply following the rules set by Your Majesty."
Gu Yuanbai smiled and had a warm conversation with them before allowing them to rest.
However, Kong Yilin stayed behind alone.
With his tall stature, his previously slightly stooped back had straightened completely after the two-month-long journey. He exuded a deeper sense of calm and maturity. "Your Majesty, I have another memorial to present."
Tian Fusheng took his memorial, and Gu Yuanbai opened it and smiled, "Kong Qing, you have done well."
After confirming Kong Yilin's abilities along the way, Gu Yuanbai had the inspectors make contact with him. After some testing, Kong Yilin was initially surprised, but quickly regained his composure and respectfully accepted the special tasks assigned by Gu Yuanbai.
Kong Yilin bowed deeply, "I will not fail in my mission."
Gu Yuanbai had given him two tasks. First, to explore the local customs and resources along the way, seeking valuable and developable resources. Second, to investigate the status and level of education of the hidden and unregistered households in various regions.
In ancient times, among a population of one million, only a few tens of thousands could read. Through Kong Yilin's investigation, it was discovered that in some remote areas, there had not been a scholar in several decades.
Whenever the court issued policies or good decrees, due to different routes and information blockages, these remote areas never received any news from the court.
Moreover, they discovered that many households had concealed or unregistered members.
After gaining control over South Jing and Jiangnan, Gu Yuanbai immediately issued orders for the officials in prefectures, counties, and townships to organize household registrations and taxation. In some areas that had suffered from the ravages of war and rebel forces, Gu Yuanbai waived two years' worth of taxes due to severe losses.
The task of organizing household registrations required officials to personally visit each household, count the number of people, and verify the appearance and age of the residents, ensuring it matched the information recorded in the government archives.
This was a monumental project that progressed slowly, but once the approximate number of missing individuals in these two regions was determined, it would provide a general overview of the entire country.
Gu Yuanbai also intended to focus on the task of organizing household registrations and taxation after the anti-corruption efforts gained momentum.
As the emperor leisurely perused the memorial, he casually remarked, "Kong Qing should know that I have a supervisory department operating in the shadows."
Kong Yilin's spirits lifted, and he suppressed his voice, deeply bowing, "I am indeed aware, Your Majesty."
Kong Yilin appeared composed, but his nature inclined towards unconventional methods. After learning of the existence of the supervisory department, he couldn't help but admire Gu Yuanbai even more.
To establish such an organization while surrounded by great power and corrupt officials was a testament to the Emperor's formidable character and temperament.
Therefore, upon understanding the role and significance of the supervisory department, Kong Yilin didn't hesitate to accept the secret edict from the Emperor. The supervisory department was like a hidden blade, and the allure of operating in the shadows greatly appealed to Kong Yilin.
Gu Yuanbai smiled and placed the finished memorial on the table. He picked up his teacup, said nothing, and calmly enjoyed his tea.
After a while, Kong Yilin smiled bitterly. He was the first to be defeated, and he performed another bow. "I don't know if I have the ability to enter the Emperor's supervisory department."
"Do you truly want to enter?" Gu Yuanbai's expression suddenly became serious. He sat upright, his eyes shining as he looked at Kong Yilin. "Kong Qing, you possess great talent and have insightful views on governing the country. If you join the supervisory department, even if you accomplish great deeds for me, these matters will remain unknown to others."
Kong Yilin smiled and replied, "I hold an official position and am willing to share Your Majesty's worries."
Gu Yuanbai smiled and casually said, "What if I want to launch an attack on Western Xia?"
Kong Yilin focused his attention, carefully pondered for a moment, and then presented a detailed analysis of the terrain of Western Xia. He mentioned which areas had abundant water resources, which areas were plagued by miasma in the forests, and which parts of the mountain passes had fallen into disrepair. Kong Yilin described everything he had seen and heard during his previous visit to Western Xia, stopping only when his throat became dry. "Your Majesty, my knowledge is limited, and these are the only things I am aware of."
Gu Yuanbai contemplated for a moment. "Have some tea."
Kong Yilin received the tea but didn't rush to drink it. He smiled and sincerely said, "Your Majesty, it is the land of Da Heng that has nurtured me. It is the knowledge of Da Heng that has allowed me to achieve success. And it is Your Majesty who has bestowed upon me everything I have today."
He paused for a moment and continued, "If there ever comes a day when I lean towards Western Xia in the war between Da Heng and Western Xia," Kong Yilin's eyes momentarily lost focus, "then there will no longer be a place for me in Da Heng."
It was because of the Emperor of Da Heng's exceptionally open and benevolent mindset that Kong Yilin dared to speak these words. However, even in his gamble, Kong Yilin remained composed, and he emerged victorious.
Gu Yuanbai instructed him to rest well before he left. Just before departing, Gu Yuanbai reminded him, "Kong Qing, regarding what you just mentioned about Western Xia, submit a strategic plan to me in ten days."
Kong Yilin acknowledged and quietly withdrew.
The next morning, during the court assembly, Gu Yuanbai announced that they would proceed with the reorganization of household registrations and taxation.
This task was so intricate and detailed that it took a full two hours during the morning court session. After the ministers felt hunger gnawing at their stomachs, they finally roughly discussed a specific process.
After the court session, the dignified Emperor was still dressed in court attire, but his face had turned pale.
The Chief Imperial Guard supported the Emperor as he walked to the table. The meals were just served, still steaming. Palace maids and eunuchs approached in an orderly manner, removing the Emperor's accessories and garments.
Once everything was removed, Gu Yuanbai supported himself. After taking a dozen deep breaths, his vision cleared, no longer obscured by darkness.
The imperial physicians hurriedly arrived, six or seven of them standing by. Gu Yuanbai glanced at them with a tilted head, sweat already forming on his forehead. He weakly extended his hand, placing it on the table for them to take his pulse.
Among these imperial physicians, each one was well-acquainted with the Emperor's physical condition. They carefully observed the Emperor's complexion and asked Tian Fusheng to inquire in detail about the symptoms that the Emperor experienced today, leaving no room for any possible cause.
Fatigue, hunger, and heat. There were no other possibilities.
Gu Yuanbai cooperated with every step, even if it meant several imperial physicians had to approach one by one to reevaluate his condition. He cooperated fully.
The imperial physicians huddled together to discuss, while Gu Yuanbai's breathing became slightly heavier. Tian Fusheng served a bowl of rice gruel, saying, "Your Majesty, would you like to add some condiments?"
"No," Gu Yuanbai replied, "Just like this."
After reluctantly finishing the bowl of gruel, his stomach finally felt a bit more comfortable. The imperial physicians also discussed a treatment plan and handed the prescription to Tian Fusheng, expressing their concerns, "Your Majesty, the prescription you have been taking needs a few additional tonics."
Gu Yuanbai raised a spoonful of gruel, his expression unchanged. "Go ahead."
"As usual, send the prescription to the Imperial Hospital, and after each imperial physician reviews it, have them sign their names," Gu Yuanbai said. "If over 90% agree, then proceed with the change. No need to inform me."
The imperial physicians hesitated to speak. "Yes. Your Majesty, please take care of your health, avoid fatigue, avoid fatigue."
"You may leave," Gu Yuanbai said.
Once the imperial physicians departed, Gu Yuanbai remained silent and continued to drink the rice gruel.
The palace fell into silence.
"How is Consort Wan's health?" Gu Yuanbai broke the silence and asked suddenly.
Tian Fusheng cautiously replied, "Your Majesty, Consort Wan hasn't left the palace for several days due to the cold weather. However, the palace attendants by her side have mentioned that her appetite has been quite good these days."
Gu Yuanbai breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good to hear."
He seemed lost in thought.
The Emperor's figure was slender but somewhat frail. Layered clothing was necessary to give the appearance of some degree of health.
Yet, this appearance of health was ultimately just a facade.
Tian Fusheng felt a twinge of sadness. "Your Majesty, please take good care of your health."
Gu Yuanbai smiled. "Of course."
After having an early meal, Gu Yuanbai lacked the energy to handle state affairs. He lay back down on the bed to rest. The guards stood outside the hall, their worries evident. Zhang, the Chief Guard, expressed his concerns, "Manager Tian, His Majesty's condition..."
Tian Fusheng let out a sigh, and the Chief Guard fell silent.
"When the Emperor is here, he is like a towering mountain that shakes everyone," after a while, Tian Fusheng whispered, "As long as the Emperor is here, no one in the Da Heng Court dares to act out of line."
The Chief Guard responded, "Indeed."
"And not only that," Tian Fusheng chuckled, "those small countries and territories outside, no matter how bold they are, they won't dare to take a step over here as long as the Emperor is present. The people beyond the Great Wall think about our food and precious goods every day, but they are blocked by the Great Wall, just as they are blocked by our Emperor. General Xue is out fighting against the nomads, right? Once General Xue strikes back hard, they will know our might."
The Chief Guard couldn't help but smile, but there was no need to say these words. They all understood.
For them, as long as the Emperor was still present, it meant that Da Heng would continue to thrive and prosper.
However, precisely because of this, the Emperor's health was a constant source of concern for them.
Chapter 75
After resting for two days in the summer palace, this group of supervisory officials requested permission to leave. Gu Yuanbai granted their request and instructed them to promptly take the prisoners to the Dali Temple for sentencing. With the Wanshou Festival approaching, the criminal cases must be dealt with before that time. They had to be busy with these matters now.
These bandits were all laborers. The healthy men were divided into three groups. One group remained in Lizhou to assist the local people. Another group was transported to the capital to serve as a deterrent and display national prestige, as well as to work as laborers in developing the uncultivated lands in the western part of the capital. The remaining group was sent to Youzhou, where there was a great need for such labor.
With these minor matters taken care of, it was already early September. Five months had passed from April to September. Time had truly flown by. When the crops in the fields began to ripen and the cotton was ready for harvesting, Gu Yuanbai decided to move back to the capital from the summer palace.
He had moved to the summer palace late this year, arriving only in mid-July. Time passed in the blink of an eye, and autumn had arrived.
Gu Yuanbai knew that the entire capital was busy with the approaching Wanshou Festival. By returning to the city now, he could ensure that people did not indulge in extravagance and waste.
As the Emperor gave the order, the summer palace bustled with activity. In the blink of an eye, the day of departure arrived. The long procession snaked its way forward, with the Emperor's carriage protected in the center. Gu Yuanbai bowed deeply to Consort Wan, who stood at the front of the palace gate, and said softly, "Please take good care of yourself."
Consort Wan had been comfortable in the summer palace, and she didn't want to endure the hardships of the journey back to the capital in the west. Besides, her health didn't allow it. Consort Wan had a vague premonition in her heart.
She smiled at Gu Yuanbai, took a step forward, and held his hand, gently patting it. She earnestly advised, "You should remember to take care of yourself, even when there are urgent matters. No matter how urgent things may be, they can't surpass the importance of having meals and resting."
Gu Yuanbai bowed again, saying, "I understand, Mother."
Consort Wan was still worried. "I heard that you spent nearly two hours in the court during the recent morning court session. Yuanbai, you mustn't do this again. It will only harm your own health, won't it?"
Gu Yuanbai smiled faintly. "I have taken note of that, Mother."
Consort Wan smiled back, her eyes slightly tinged with sourness. She blinked away the traces of her emotions and pretended nothing was wrong. "Go on now, everyone is waiting for you."
After being urged several times, Gu Yuanbai turned around and led the officials away. He took a few steps but couldn't help glancing back. Consort Wan had a serious expression as she watched his departing figure.
Gu Yuanbai paused for a moment and then took bigger steps as he walked away. Consort Wan couldn't help but take two steps forward before stopping herself with a sigh.
She regarded the Emperor as her own child and didn't want to see Gu Yuanbai exhausted every day. A frail body like his was best suited for carefree nurturing. But as the legitimate son of the late Emperor, how could he not ascend to the throne?
Gu Yuanbai was doing well, even better than the late Emperor. If the late Emperor knew, he would surely exclaim with delight, "My son is amazing!" Consort Wan was just an ordinary woman who knew nothing, but she knew that the Emperor's authority had grown stronger, and he had become more decisive in the palace.
Her son was drawing closer to a powerful Emperor that everyone revered. Although she privately wished he wouldn't be so fatigued, she couldn't help but feel proud of him.
Consort Wan wiped away a tear from the corner of her eye and, in a moment of trance, felt as if Gu
Yuanbai was stepping on a land of beauty and prosperity.
Xue Yuan's injuries had been treated until early September, and he had finally recovered somewhat. He had been waiting by the carriage since early morning, eager to see Gu Yuanbai.
After an unknown amount of time, a gust of wind brushed past him. Gu Yuanbai hurriedly passed by, lifting the curtain and quickly entering the carriage. After a while, a muffled voice came from inside, "Depart."
The horses lifted their hooves. Xue Yuan was a bit dazed as he turned his head to look inside the carriage. In that brief glance, it seemed like the young Emperor's eyes were red.
What's going on? Xue Yuan lowered his gaze, feeling perplexed.
The return convoy didn't stop to rest until noon.
Tian Fusheng entered the carriage to serve Gu Yuanbai his meal. Gu Yuanbai had no appetite, but he forced himself to take a few bites and felt satisfied. He couldn't eat anymore, so he let him go.
Tian Fusheng walked out of the carriage with a worried expression on his face and said to the people around him, "The Emperor is unhappy."
"It must be because of Consort Wan," the chief guard sighed. "Consort Wan stayed in Hebei, which is several days' journey from the capital. With fast horses and urgent travel, it would take two days to reach, but considering the Emperor's health... If the Emperor wants to see Consort Wan, it would take around fifteen days for a round trip."
The imperial guards sighed. Why wasn't the Emperor hungry? Their stomachs were growling with hunger.
But would they dare to persuade the Emperor again? They didn't dare. If the Emperor couldn't eat, it wasn't something they could advise him on.
The chief guard worried in his heart but followed the usual practice of eating in batches. He instructed a group of people to go and eat first, and he specifically remembered Xue Yuan, who was still recovering from his injuries. "Young Master Xue, you get hungry easily. How about going to eat first?"
Xue Yuan maintained a composed expression and thought to himself, "How could I get hungry so easily?" But to accommodate the chief guard's stupidity, he replied with a condescending tone, "I'll eat last."
His displeasure was evident, and his tone of voice began to resemble his previous demeanor before going to South Jing. The chief guard quickly distanced himself, feeling puzzled.
During the journey back, Gu Yuanbai would usually provide sufficient rest and meal time for the soldiers.
Not far away, groups of soldiers gathered to eat. In addition to the distributed rations and pickled vegetables, the cooks were simmering meat soup. The aroma from the large pot of soup could spread for miles when the spices were plentiful. Although it couldn't compare to the delicacy of the royal meals, the portion was generous.
The soldiers lined up in batches, holding their bowls and chopsticks as they waited for the meat soup. Occasionally, someone would loudly declare, "Give me a ladle of soup with the most meat."
This would prompt laughter from the others, who would then jest, "Remember, everyone! When he finishes his own bowl, let's snatch the meat from his!"
"Leave him with just the clear broth!"
"Hahaha."
The aroma of the meat soup wafted all the way to the carriage. Gu Yuanbai lifted the curtain and looked outside, observing the soldiers playing and joking in the distance. After watching for a while, he decided to step out of the carriage as well.
The guards who were waiting outside for the next group to go and eat stood upright in astonishment. "Your Majesty?"
Gu Yuanbai rolled up his sleeves and gestured with his chin towards the large pot of food. "Bring me a bowl of meat soup."
A guard hurriedly ran towards the meat soup area, while Gu Yuanbai looked around and found a smooth rock to sit on.
The guard who went to get the soup ran straight to the front. One of the soldiers in the queue loudly exclaimed, "His Majesty said that during mealtime, the reward silver should be distributed only after maintaining proper order. No one should disregard military regulations. Why did you go straight to the front?"
The guard replied loudly, "Please bear with me, brothers. I'm fetching a portion of meat soup for His Majesty."
The soldiers behind fell silent, afraid of delaying His Majesty's time. The soldier at the front, who was about to receive the soup, quickly protected his bowl and blocked the ladle being handed over by the cook. He hurriedly said, "Serve His Majesty first. I don't want the meat. My portion can all go to His Majesty."
"The meat is enough," the cook said as he tried to serve the soldier, but seeing his vigorous head shaking, he gave up and turned to ask the guard, "Has His Majesty's bowl and chopsticks been brought?"
The guard was taken aback. "I forgot to bring them."
The cook quickly squatted down and rummaged for bowls and chopsticks. After a while, he found a complete bowl without any discoloration or cracks. He washed it several times in clean water before carefully ladling a bowl of meat soup and handing it to the guard with both hands.
The guard quickly arrived in front of Gu Yuanbai, and the aroma of the meat wafted along. Gu Yuanbai looked down and saw clear broth with slices of ginger and Sichuan peppercorns to remove the gamy flavor. He took a sip and found that it had enough salt and perhaps a hint of vinegar, making it flavorful.
"Not bad," Gu Yuanbai commented. "Go and bring me a big sesame seed bread."
The guard was momentarily stunned, then quickly ran off to fulfill the request.
During the Han Dynasty, panbreads became popular, and they became a staple food during military campaigns in the Tang and Song dynasties. With the increased cultivation of farmland in Da Heng, the people had more food, and two meals a day became three. With sufficient food supply, the variety of dishes expanded, including mature techniques for making sesame seed breads and steamed buns during the Da Heng era.
The military required a large amount of grains, and Gu Yuanbai wondered if his efforts had truly benefited the soldiers.
Seated on a rock, Emperor Gu calmly sipped the meat soup in his bowl. His actions were swift and precise, displaying a clean and neat demeanor. Xue Yuan couldn't help but observe him, noticing that many robust men in the army made rougher movements. Despite his frailty, the young emperor remained poised and graceful.
The guard brought over a bread made in the military style. Gu Yuanbai placed his bowl and chopsticks beside him, tore open the bread, examined its color, and tasted a piece. It was slightly hard and difficult to swallow.
He tore off another piece of the bread and soaked it in the meat soup, making it easier to eat. Gu Yuanbai had gone to great lengths to improve the soldiers' rations, ensuring an adequate supply of salt and meat. Fortunately, these provisions were carefully inspected and implemented at the grassroots level.
He displayed a hint of satisfaction on his face, but he wasn't hungry and couldn't eat any more. Xue Yuan, who was always watching him, spoke up, "Your Majesty, are you full?"
Gu Yuanbai nodded and replied, "I'm full."
Xue Yuan said, "Give it to me, then."
He took the bowl and chopsticks and began eating without any discomfort. In front of everyone's gaze, he soaked the bread in the meat soup. Once the bread absorbed enough water, he used his chopsticks to scoop it up along with the meat, devouring them.
The sound of soup gradually diminished, and in no time, Xue Yuan finished the bowl of meat soup and bread. His expression remained unchanged as he held the bowl and chopsticks, walking towards the back of the long queue, preparing to have another bowl.
Gu Yuanbai felt as though only a few breaths had passed, yet Xue Yuan had already gone far. He fell silent for a moment, then turned to the chief guard and asked, "Haven't you eaten yet?"
The chief guard felt embarrassed and replied, "I haven't eaten yet."
Gu Yuanbai raised his chin towards Xue Yuan and sighed, "Does he always eat like this?"
That half-grown brat is going to eat himself to death. Seeing this, I can only imagine how hungry he must have been at the border.
The chief guard pondered for a moment and said, "It seems that Xue Yuan can't tolerate hunger. Sometimes when he watches you eat, he becomes so hungry that he can't help but salivate."
Gu Yuanbai contemplated this. No wonder there were a few occasions when he noticed Xue Yuan's fiery gaze as he ate.
After lunch, Gu Yuanbai returned to the carriage.
In the afternoon, the wind picked up, causing the carriage to shake uncomfortably. When Tian Fusheng brought the dinner, Gu Yuanbai wanted to eat a little to sustain himself, but his body betrayed him. He had no appetite and felt a bit nauseous.
"I'm not eating," Gu Yuanbai muttered. "I'll eat when I'm hungry."
Having only taken a few bites during lunch and dinner, Tian Fusheng worried. He stepped out of the carriage, hesitated for a moment, and approached Xue Yuan. "Xue Yuan, do you have any way to make His Majesty eat a few mouthfuls?"
Xue Yuan smiled, his impatience evident on his face. "Tian Fusheng, I don't know if it will work, but if it does, I might end up being punished."
Everyone knew that Xue Yuan was still recovering from his injuries. Tian Fusheng frowned and pondered for a moment before biting his lip. "If Xue Yuan really gets punished because of this, I and the other officials will do our best to intercede for you."
Before he finished speaking, Xue Yuan snatched the food box from his hand and leaped onto the carriage.
As the curtain flew up and down, Gu Yuanbai didn't even have a chance to see who had entered before Xue Yuan was already in front of him.
Xue Yuan's expression darkened as soon as he saw Gu Yuanbai. He reached out and touched Gu Yuanbai's stomach, frowning deeply. "Don't want to eat? Is it because you feel uncomfortable here?"
Gu Yuanbai felt uncomfortable. He pushed Xue Yuan's hand away, furrowing his brows and suppressing his voice. "Get down."
Xue Yuan smiled, bending down. His tall figure completely enveloped Gu Yuanbai in shadow.
In the next moment, Xue Yuan forcibly lifted Gu Yuanbai into his arms. As Gu Yuanbai struggled, Xue Yuan held him against his chest, using his thumb to lightly press on the young emperor's stomach, finding nothing abnormal.
Gu Yuanbai hadn't eaten, and he felt weak. Gathering his strength, he kicked Xue Yuan's thigh and spoke with a suppressed voice filled with anger, "Xue Yuan, do you really want to die? Let me off!"
"You always said that whatever you say is good, and I will listen to you," Xue Yuan lowered his eyes obediently. His actions were not as gentle as his expression. He locked Gu Yuanbai's legs under his own and restrained the young emperor's hands and feet before reaching for the food box with one hand. "But not this time."
He tossed the lid of the box aside and placed the food on the table one by one. He massaged Gu Yuanbai's stomach, knowing that when someone is in a bad mood, they don't feel like eating, and when they don't feel like eating, forcing them won't work.
Before Gu Yuanbai could unleash his anger, Xue Yuan's massage relieved the nausea he was feeling. Surprisingly, he even felt somewhat comfortable. His anger subsided, and he found a comfortable position, using Xue Yuan as a human sofa. He closed his eyes and muttered, "A little higher."
Xue Yuan obeyed and gently massaged Gu Yuanbai. However, he couldn't control his hand, and as he massaged, he had the urge to move upward and massage the heartless conscience of the little emperor.
Does Gu Yuanbai have a conscience? Yes, after all, he remembered to reward Xue Yuan after enjoying himself.
Xue Yuan wanted to please the emperor with intimacy. The difficulty lies in whether this intimacy can reach the emperor.
If that Taoist's talisman works... Xue Yuan sighed.
He, Xue Jiuyao, never expected to be so foolish at times.
But at this moment, the most important thing was for Gu Yuanbai to eat. Xue Yuan focused on massaging his stomach for a while, feeling that it was enough, and moved his hand away. Then he bent down, lowered his body, and pressed his ear against Gu Yuanbai's belly. After listening for a moment, he heard it—gurgling sounds.
Gu Yuanbai also heard the noises in his stomach. He opened his eyes and saw Xue Yuan listening intently to the sounds, seemingly fascinated.
Gu Yuanbai's face twisted slightly. "Xue Yuan?"
Xue Yuan quickly concealed his expression, calmly stood up, and held Gu Yuanbai in his arms, allowing him to lean against his chest. He picked up a bowl of congee and fed Gu Yuanbai.
Although it was called congee, it was as thick as rice. It contained carefully prepared meat strips and vegetables, each ingredient designed to stimulate Gu Yuanbai's appetite to the fullest.
Gu Yuanbai reluctantly took a sip, fearing that he might vomit.
Xue Yuan's palm was placed near his lips, and his eyes never blinked. "Can you eat it?"
The discomfort he felt earlier had subsided considerably. Gu Yuanbai swallowed the congee and replied hoarsely, "Continue."
Xue Yuan was busy. He had to feed Gu Yuanbai and keep his stomach warm. It was rare for Gu Yuanbai to obediently stay in his embrace like this. After feeding him, Xue Yuan found it difficult to let go of his hand.
Gu Yuanbai had half a bowl of congee, and once he felt something in his stomach, he no longer wanted to eat.
Xue Yuan tidied up the things. After Gu Yuanbai felt better and returned to his high and mighty emperor self, he took out a memorial to read casually while saying, "Get out."
Xue Yuan stepped down from the carriage. Before leaving, he suddenly turned back, smiled faintly, and whispered, "Your Majesty, the sound of your hungry stomach is more melodious than that of ordinary people."
With a loud "thud," the memorial landed on the wooden door that Xue Yuan managed to close in time.
Xue Yuan silently laughed a few times, touched the sword at his waist, and stepped down from the carriage with big strides.
The convoy made its way, and eight days later, they arrived in the capital city.
As they entered the city, Gu Yuanbai looked around and reluctantly noticed that the main roads of the capital had been decorated by craftsmen with colorful paintings and bright fabrics. Groups of scholars gathered on the roadside, occasionally frowning and pondering, composing poems to congratulate the emperor's birthday.
Everywhere there was music and dancing, a scene of prosperity.
The convoy of the summer palace stopped in front of the imperial city gate. The officials stepped out of their carriages and stood beside them, bowing in unison to Gu Yuanbai. Every word spoken by Gu Yuanbai was passed on by eunuchs to the back. When the final order was given, the officials responded in unison and then dispersed, returning to their respective residences.
Chu Wei followed his father, guiding the carriage away. After walking a few steps, he heard a familiar voice from the outside guard soldiers, "Chu Zihu."
Chu Wei turned around and saw his classmate. He smiled and said, "You're here too."
The guard soldier stopped his classmate by the roadside, and Chu Wei walked out of that area before walking together with his classmate.
His classmate glanced back and opened his folding fan, teasing, "Chu Zihu, who used to disdain worldly matters, has now transformed into a high-ranking official from a top scholar."
Chu Wei reminisced about the past, finding it somewhat ironic. He smiled helplessly and said, "I was naive back then."
His classmate was surprised and scrutinized him up and down before saying, "Are you really Chu Wei, Chu Zihu?"
Chu Wei's expression turned cold as he replied, "Why did you come looking for me?"
His classmate let out a sigh of relief and muttered, "This is the Chu Zihu I know."
Chu Wei turned to leave, but his classmate quickly caught up. The coachman of the Chu residence, seeing his young master accompanied by a friend, led Chu Wei's father and mother back home first.
The streets of the capital were bustling with people. Craftsmen were painting colorful decorations, and the onlookers occasionally handed them a few bowls of water while admiring the artwork.
Passing by cheerful craftsmen and encountering several scholars composing poetry, they overheard the discussion about today's "Da Heng National Gazette." The top headline of today's newspaper featured an article about the preparations in various regions for the emperor's birthday.
"I wonder what those local powerhouses are up to," one of the scholars grumbled, "They are making such a big fuss. Are they trying to overshadow our capital city?"
"The 'National Gazette' reports that in one place in Huainan, the common people spontaneously prepared a thousand Kongming lanterns," another scholar chuckled bitterly, "Upon hearing this, the local powerhouses immediately added an additional nine thousand lanterns, symbolizing 'long live.'"
"Now that we have the 'National Gazette,' we realize how vast the world is," the scholars sighed but then became more spirited, "If these regions want to steal our limelight, they'll have to see if we agree or not."
Chu Wei and his classmate exchanged a glance, unable to contain their laughter. They walked past the scholars, and a few children ahead were happily running around with sugar-coated haws. In this lively scene, Chu Wei's classmate suddenly sighed.
"I was the shallow one," his classmate said with a sense of desolation, "The best Da Heng is right in front of me, and the best monarch is waiting for me to serve, yet I was blindfolded by the internal instability of Da Heng."
He chuckled bitterly, "The great danger that I was worried about had already been resolved by the court even before I fully understood it."
Chu Wei smirked and laughed.
He naturally knew how much the court had done during the busy months, but his classmate was not an official and remained unaware. As his gaze swept around, observing the peaceful lives of the people, he felt a lot of emotions. Just then, his classmate spoke.
"I also want to become an official."
He spoke with conviction.
Chapter 76
After his classmate finished speaking, he couldn't help but laugh. "I used to laugh at you for taking the imperial examination, and now I find myself in the same situation. I just hope not to embarrass myself. You become the top scholar, and I won't compare myself to you. I'll be content with just being among the top performers."
Chu Wei chuckled softly, "You won't embarrass yourself."
The classmate laughed heartily, "I accept the auspicious words from the top scholar!"
As the two walked past the Zhuangyuan building, the classmate happened to look up and glanced at the window of the building. Something came to his mind, and he pointed at the window, saying, "I still remember when we were sightseeing together before. We saw a strikingly handsome man through that window, with red lips and white teeth. You said that beauty is just an outer shell, and the appearance is merely a vessel. Do you remember?"
Red lips and white teeth? Chu Wei looked up at the window and thought of the emperor. He couldn't help but suppress a smile, and his expression softened a bit. "I do remember."
Before they could continue, a clamor erupted on the street. They turned around and saw a group of people and horses charging into the bustling market. They were dressed in golden flowered robes with long belts hanging down to the ground. The group carried an arrogant and imposing demeanor, their tall stature and deep facial features marking them as foreigners.
The common people and merchants in the market hurriedly fled, and the vendors' goods were knocked over in the chaos, shattering the previous tranquility. Chu Wei's face turned cold, without hesitation, he walked forward and reprimanded, "The laws of Da Heng clearly state that causing trouble on horseback is not permissible. Who are you, the envoys from where, to act so arrogantly and boldly here?"
The group of foreigners halted their horses and glanced down at Chu Wei. They spoke among themselves in their language and then burst into laughter.
The classmate stepped forward with a smile on his face but a hint of displeasure in his eyes. "You came to Da Heng, yet you mock our Da Heng officials. Isn't that rather inappropriate?"
The group of people on horseback stopped laughing, exchanged glances, and after a moment, one of them stepped forward at a leisurely pace. This person wore a felt hat and had a young and elegant appearance. His slightly curled black hair fell beneath the hat, and his eyes carried a hint of arrogance and interest as he looked at Chu Wei.
"Are all officials in Da Heng like this?" The man scrutinized Chu Wei from head to toe, teasing, "Are they all this prettier than women?"
Chu Wei's expression darkened, and his exquisitely beautiful face turned gloomy.
The foreigners laughed a few more times and seemed to want to say something else. However, Da Heng soldiers on patrol had already arrived on the street. They surrounded the cavalry with their weapons and shields raised. The leader among the soldiers had a stern expression and didn't look too kindly. "The envoys from Western Xia, please proceed to the Ming Sheng Inn first. Later, our officials will come to discuss the matter of causing disturbances while riding."
Upon seeing the fully armed infantry, the arrogance of the Western Xia group subsided slightly. They looked at the man in front, about to say something, but the leader of the patrol soldiers interrupted firmly, "Please go now."
The Western Xia envoys were forced to dismount their horses, and the gloom on Chu Wei's face slightly eased as he and his classmate looked coldly at them.
The man who spoke to him earlier still seemed intrigued and pointed at Chu Wei, asking the patrol soldiers, "Who is this person?"
The leader of the patrol soldiers looked at Chu Wei without responding to the man and nodded instead. "Master Chu, with us here, you can handle this as you see fit."
Chu Wei nodded back at him, the tendons on the back of his hand already showing. His classmate whispered, "Look at their attire, they should be Western Xia nobles. Zihu, don't act impulsively. Let's leave first."
Chu Wei restrained himself and said, "Let's go."
Early the next morning, the incident with the Western Xia envoys causing disturbances while riding was presented to Gu Yuanbai.
This matter seemed familiar; if he recalled correctly, Xue Yuan had once left his name because of a similar incident. Gu Yuanbai remained expressionless, tapping the table with a heavy voice. "Since the Western Xia envoys have come to Da Heng, they should be dealt with according to Da Heng's laws. If they are dissatisfied, let their emperor personally write to me to express their grievances."
"Yes," the Governor of the Capital replied, then bowed and left.
Gu Yuanbai's birthday was at the end of September, and in mid-September, the Dali Temple stopped accepting criminal cases. Before halting his work in the Dali Temple, Gu Yuanbai took the time to investigate the cases handled during this period. After leaving the place, it was still early, and the carriage slowly made its way to the imperial palace.
Passing by a teahouse, Gu Yuanbai heard a familiar voice from outside the carriage, "What do you want, sir?"
The voice was cold and icy, like spitting ice. Then, another thick and lingering voice with a hint of an exotic accent sounded, "I want to talk to the Da Heng officials."
Gu Yuanbai frowned, lifted half of the carriage curtain, and looked outside. In front of Zhang's Bookstore, a man dressed in Western Xia attire was blocking Chu Wei.
Chu Wei's face looked unpleasant, and his fingers made many imprints in his palm, but he still suppressed his anger. As diplomatic relations had been established between the two countries, as an official of the court, he couldn't act impulsively. He coldly replied, "I won't accompany you."
Li Angshun had a dignified appearance, with deep facial features and a high nose bridge, extraordinarily handsome, but his behavior was barbaric. Seeing Chu Wei about to leave, he stepped to the side, still interested, and said, "Is this how Da Heng treats guests? Quite impolite, isn't it?"
Who was really impolite? Chu Wei's temples throbbed, and he loathed men like the Western Xia prince the most. Being entangled by him, Chu Wei was struggling to maintain his composure and etiquette.
At that moment, a discreet carriage passed by on the street. The curtain at the window was lifted slightly, and a voice sounded, "Master Chu, come over."
Chu Wei's expression momentarily froze as he turned to look at the carriage, snapping back to his senses. His face relaxed, mixed with a hint of annoyance, and he quickly stepped forward to bow in a low voice, "Your Majesty."
The Prince of Western Xia, who was trying to catch up with Chu Wei, was intercepted by his guards. The curtain at the carriage window was slightly lifted, revealing the Emperor's lips tightly pursed with suppressed anger. As Chu Wei glanced at the Emperor, the faint shadows that arose from the Emperor's previous observation dissipated slowly.
"Such audacity, prince," the Emperor's temper was unpredictable, his tone imposing, "On the land of my Da Heng, at the feet of my throne, you dare to humiliate my Da Heng officials."
Each word he spoke was slow and drawn out, and the straight line of his lips felt chillingly severe.
The prince, being held back from afar, had an instinctual feeling that this person was not someone to provoke. He bent down, trying to catch a glimpse of the person's full face from within the carriage. However, all he could see was a slender and tense jaw line and pale lips. The Western Xia prince asked, "May I ask who you are?"
In the carriage, a cold sneer emerged as the person continued, "My Da Heng is a country of propriety and etiquette. Since the Western Xia envoys have entered Da Heng, they should learn our customs. If they don't know proper etiquette, they should stay at Ming Sheng Inn and learn it thoroughly before coming out again."
With abundant reserves in the treasury, ample provisions, and strong and capable soldiers, Gu Yuanbai was full of confidence and could easily display his elder brother demeanor towards the declining Western Xia, who had been on a path of extravagance.
The guard who stopped the Western Xia prince said in a stern voice, "You may leave now."
The Western Xia prince watched as Chu Wei boarded the carriage, and the horse's hooves lifted as the well-bred steed slowly walked away under the protection of numerous guards.
The Western Xia prince's face turned dark as he felt deeply humiliated. He secretly signaled to his people among the crowd.
His people nodded in understanding and followed the carriage, keeping a low profile.
Inside the carriage, the light was dim.
Chu Wei sat to the side, head hanging low, remaining silent. He looked deeply distressed and repressed.
Gu Yuanbai's expression wasn't much better as he observed Chu Wei in this state. He sighed and softly comforted, "Chu Qing, are you alright?"
Chu Wei whispered, "I caused trouble for Your Majesty."
Gu Yuanbai coldly snorted and said in a gentle tone, "How can you be considered causing trouble? Those Western Xia people are insolent and disrespectful, acting like wild monkeys and horses. They don't show any restraint on Da Heng's land; it's clear they don't regard Da Heng highly."
As he spoke, his eyes deepened in expression. It was precisely because of this that he believed Da Heng needed a great victory to demonstrate its strength to both domestic and foreign audiences.
He wanted the Western Xia people to know that on this land, Da Heng was once an elder brother, and it remained their elder brother, but this elder brother's temper had changed. No longer would he tolerate the antics and unruly behavior of younger siblings.
Chu Wei wanted to say something else, but suddenly, the sound of approaching horses could be heard from outside, accompanied by muffled whispers. Gu Yuanbai lifted the curtain and found himself face to face with Xue Yuan, who was leaning down.
Xue Yuan seemed surprised by Gu Yuanbai lifting the curtain, his eyes revealing a hint of astonishment. His arched eyebrows and rakish demeanor almost seemed to reach Gu Yuanbai's face. But he quickly recovered, flashing a smile mixed with a touch of warmth.
Gu Yuanbai glanced at him and then took several looks at the horse beneath Xue Yuan's crotch. "Why is Hongyun (red cloud) here with you?"
Xue Yuan, still bending over, holding the reins with one hand and stabilizing himself by pressing the top of the carriage with the other, smiled at Gu Yuanbai. "Take another look."
Gu Yuanbai lowered his head and carefully examined the horse. It was then that he noticed a ring of dark hair above the horse's hooves, resembling a black circlet. This horse was vigorous and untamed, locking its fierce gaze onto Gu Yuanbai.
The carriage continued to move at a slow pace, and the horse under Xue Yuan's seat also slowed down considerably. The horse let out a dissatisfied neigh and received a harsh scolding from Xue Yuan.
"Another good one," Gu Yuanbai was fascinated by the sight of such a fine horse, unable to take his eyes off it, "How did you get this one?"
"More and more foreign people have come to congratulate Your Majesty in the capital," Xue Yuan leisurely explained, "I exchanged three fine horses and two young wolves for this horse."
Seeing that Gu Yuanbai was still looking at the steed beneath him, Xue Yuan leaned in and said in a hushed tone, "Your Majesty, care to guess whether this horse is male or female?"
Stallions were taller, more majestic, and more powerful than mares. With just one glance, Gu Yuanbai knew it was a stallion. He didn't hesitate to say, "Whether it's male or female, this horse has caught my attention."
Xue Yuan couldn't help but laugh, pretending to be distressed, he said, "But the Prince of the Allied Kingdom has invited me to his residence. If I don't have a horse, I'm afraid I won't make it in time."
"Prince He invited you to his residence?" Gu Yuanbai frowned.
"Yes," Xue Yuan straightened his back, glancing at Gu Yuanbai from the corner of his eye. He suddenly frowned and said, "Your Majesty's lips seem a bit red. Did the tea scald you, or did someone upset you?"
Gu Yuanbai was taken aback and couldn't help but touch his lips.
Xue Yuan's gaze instantly became somewhat restrained, and he discreetly shifted his eyes to meet the gaze of the chief guard on the other side.
The chief guard looked anxious and silently mouthed, "Guard Xue, pay attention to Master Chu."
Xue Yuan understood his message, raised an eyebrow, and maintained a composed expression, nodding slightly. The chief guard relaxed slightly, his expression showing a hidden sense of relief.
Gu Yuanbai withdrew his hand and continued with the previous topic, "When did Prince He invite you to his residence?"
"It was on the day I returned from the Summer Palace to the capital," Xue Yuan narrowed his eyes slightly and smiled politely, "The prince sent someone to invite me for a meeting. I don't know the reason, but with his orders, I dare not refuse."
After saying that, Xue Yuan pondered for a moment, feeling that his words weren't appropriate. So, he casually changed his words, "I am greatly honored, and I felt it was necessary to go."
"Coincidentally," Gu Yuanbai pondered for a moment, then suddenly laughed, "It has been quite some time since I last visited Prince He. Since I'm finally out, it's a good opportunity to go and see him."
Prince He and Xue Yuan.
What connection could there be between them?
Chapter 77
After the carriage came to a stop, the West Xia spies who had been secretly following them noted the characters "Prince He's Residence" on the plaque above the mansion gate and quickly turned around, hastening their departure.
Prince He had been waiting for Xue Yuan in the mansion for quite some time. Upon investigating Xue Yuan, he discovered that Xue Yuan had delivered gifts to the palace several times. Learning of this, a gloomy expression formed on the Prince's face.
With such thoughts in mind, no one seemed innocent when viewed from his perspective.
Prince He secretly focused his attention on Xue Yuan and the more he looked, the more he felt the need to warn him face to face.
As the supreme ruler, the Emperor, who would dare to entertain impure intentions towards Gu Yuanbai?
However, Prince He did not expect that the Emperor would also come along with Xue Yuan. After being informed by the gatekeeper, Prince He hurriedly made his way to the mansion gate, feeling increasingly apprehensive. He even began to wonder if Gu Yuanbai intentionally came to support Xue Yuan by his side.
Was it to prevent him from punishing Xue Yuan?
As Prince He arrived at the mansion gate, his dark thoughts sank even deeper. If Xue Yuan had truly seduced Gu Yuanbai onto the wrong path, regardless of the cost, Prince He would kill him.
Gu Yuanbai couldn't possibly be interested in men.
However, as Prince He raised his head in front of the mansion, he saw Gu Yuanbai stepping down from the carriage and greeting him with a slight smile, saying, "Prince He."
Prince He's breath hitched for a moment, and after a while, he lowered his head and replied, "Greetings, Your Majesty."
"There's no need for such formality between family members," Gu Yuanbai approached and personally helped Prince He up, smiling. "The last time I came to Prince He's residence was on the day brother fell ill. Time has passed by in a hurry, and now we're almost into autumn."
"...Yes."
"I remember there were quite a few summer chrysanthemums planted in Prince He's residence," Gu Yuanbai naturally remarked, "In September, the summer chrysanthemums bloom for the last time. I wonder if they've bloomed by now?"
Following Gu Yuanbai's lead, Prince He rose with his assistance, grasping Gu Yuanbai's wrist and then releasing it as if it had been scalded by fire when he met Gu Yuanbai's puzzled gaze. He averted his eyes and looked at Gu Yuanbai's clothes, where he could make out a flower. "The flowers and plants in the mansion are taken care of by the Consort. The Consort mentioned that they should have bloomed within the past two days."
Gu Yuanbai praised, "The Consort is gentle and virtuous. Elder brother is fortunate to have such a wise wife. Treat her well."
Prince He nodded slowly. "No need for Your Majesty to say more. I naturally know how to act."
Gu Yuanbai refrained from saying more, allowing Prince He to lead the way. The officials followed behind the Emperor and Prince He. Prince He lagged half a step behind the Emperor, and as they walked, he lowered his head, looking at the hem of Gu Yuanbai's robe. Gu Yuanbai casually asked, "You know Xue Qing?"
Prince He clenched his hand, calmly and unhurriedly responding, "I heard that Mr. Xue had served at the border for several years. I've never seen the scenery of the border during my time stationed there, so I thought of inviting Mr. Xue for a conversation at my residence."
"You've found the right person then," Gu Yuanbai smiled. "Both of you have experienced battles on the battlefield, so you should have plenty to talk about."
Prince He felt an increasing sense of annoyance, but he gave a deep nod in acknowledgment. "Very well, Your Majesty."
In Prince He's residence, there was a designated area where many summer chrysanthemums were planted. After passing through the round gate, a vibrant and colorful scene of numerous summer chrysanthemums greeted their eyes. These flowers with slender petals gracefully displayed their branches and leaves, emanating a faint fragrance that wafted through the air.
Gu Yuanbai's eyes brightened as he took in the scenery. He couldn't help but tease Prince He, "You usually appear so rigid, but who would have thought that the distinguished Prince He hides such delicate flowers in his residence."
Prince He replied, "They are just wildflowers that bloom on their own."
Gu Yuanbai chuckled a few times, found a place to sit, and gestured to the stone bench across from him, saying to Prince He, "Please, have a seat."
Prince He sat down, and someone brought tea from behind. Gu Yuanbai held the teacup in his hand but did not drink. Instead, he leisurely said, "Prince He, let me ask you, do you want to return to the military?"
Prince He abruptly looked up, speechless.
Gu Yuanbai gazed into Prince He's calm eyes, and with the tea lid, he brushed over the tea leaves, speaking gently, "Since that day of heavy rain when We said those things to you, you have seemed a little off."
Prince He's figure slightly stiffened, almost imperceptibly.
Gu Yuanbai smiled and said, "At first, this seat thought you were angry. But upon further observation, it seemed like you were still the same as before, as if We were just overthinking."
"In the past few days, you urged We to marry a palace concubine, yet you know well that We are physically weak," Gu Yuanbai continued calmly, "Are you hoping for We to die in the bed of a palace concubine or to wait for an unknowing child to replace me as the heir to the throne?"
Prince He moved his mouth, a bitter expression on his face. "I never had such thoughts."
Gu Yuanbai placed the teacup down and fell silent.
For a moment, the air seemed to still.
Warm sunlight filtered through the leaves, gently dancing with a rustling sound.
From the corner of his eye, Gu Yuanbai caught sight of a figure passing by the round door. He turned to look, and behind the guards, he saw an ordinary-looking scholar.
"Who is that person?" Gu Yuanbai casually asked.
Prince He, who had been lost in thought, followed his gaze. "That is a retainer of my residence, surnamed Wang."
Gu Yuanbai nodded nonchalantly and stood up, saying, "Let's go. If we say we're here to see the chrysanthemums, we should appreciate them properly."
After spending a while in the prince's residence and exchanging a few words with Prince He, Gu Yuanbai left the prince's door. Just before boarding the carriage, Prince He stood in front of the gate and suddenly said, "Your Majesty, you once mentioned my countryside estate. It is currently vacant, and there are several springs that are beneficial for one's health. If Your Majesty likes it, you can call upon me anytime to accompany you there."
Xue Yuan, who was bending down to lift the carriage curtain for Gu Yuanbai, froze for a moment and quickly raised his head, his sharp gaze directed towards Prince He.
Prince He's gaze was dim, focused intently on Gu Yuanbai's figure. After a few moments, as if suddenly awakening, a trace of struggle flashed across his expression, and he abruptly turned his head.
Xue Yuan narrowed his eyes.
He had heard of Prince He's reputation before.
A member of the royal bloodline, a figure who once led troops in the military. Due to Xue Yuan's similar age to Prince He, he had been discreetly compared to him by many people.
However, Xue Yuan's military achievements were suppressed and concealed. Except for a few individuals, Prince He was considered the epitome of excellence in everyone's eyes.
Epitome of excellence, yet this was the current state he was in.
Xue Yuan scrutinized him, feeling instinctively uncomfortable with Prince He's gaze fixed on Gu Yuanbai.
As the carriage set off, Gu Yuanbai also invited Chu Wei to join them inside. He inquired about the matter between him and the Western Xia prince.
Chu Wei had nothing to hide and explained the whole story after the carriage entered the palace. After a moment of hesitation, he asked, "Your Majesty, is this person the prince of Western Xia?"
"Indeed," Gu Yuanbai nodded slightly, lost in thought. "Western Xia has sent a prince to congratulate me."
Chu Wei also fell into contemplation. Suddenly, Gu Yuanbai remembered, "Your classmate was also there that day. According to what you said, your classmate knows some Western Xia language?"
"While he is not particularly proficient in the Four Books and Five Classics, he possesses knowledge that ordinary people do not. Besides Western Xia, my classmate also has a basic understanding of the languages of Dayue and the Liao people," Chu Wei candidly replied. "He once traveled the overland Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty. As he told me, he wishes to further explore the maritime route to Guangzhou, known as the 'Maritime Silk Road.'"
The Maritime Silk Road, commonly referred to as the Guangzhou Maritime Silk Road, was a maritime route along the southeastern coast of Huaxia leading to countries in the northern Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, and the coasts of the Red Sea, among other destinations.
Upon hearing this, Gu Yuanbai felt a sense of admiration. "To read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles, indeed."
After finishing his words, the carriage came to a stop. Gu Yuanbai got off the carriage and, upon seeing Xue Yuan following behind, suddenly remembered that Xue Yuan still held the position of Chief Commandant in the Palace Guards.
Gu Yuanbai silently made a note to transfer him and continued speaking to Chu Wei, "Have you traveled the overland Silk Road?"
"No, I haven't," Chu Wei's expression revealed a hint of regret. "After the An Lushan Rebellion in the Tang Dynasty, the rise of Tubo, Huigu, and Dashi led to the disruption of the overland Silk Road. It's a pity that we can no longer witness the past prosperity."
Only after speaking did Chu Wei remember that the person in front of him was the emperor of Da Heng. He pressed his lips together and said, "Your Majesty, I have no disrespectful intentions."
"I know," Gu Yuanbai smiled. "I feel the same as you, it's a great pity."
Chu Wei couldn't help but curl his lips and let out a soft chuckle.
He knew that he had an outstanding appearance, so this smile carried a deliberate meaning. Chu Wei blushed slightly, as he didn't like drawing attention with his appearance, yet here he was, using it in this manner. He didn't know why he acted this way in front of the emperor, but it seemed involuntary.
His smiling expression was incredibly pleasant, his countenance seemed to radiate light. Gu Yuanbai glanced at him and turned his head to look at the mad dog, but to his surprise, Xue Yuan's figure was nowhere to be seen.
"Where is he?" Gu Yuanbai wondered.
Why was Xue Yuan not reacting at all when Chu Wei was smiling so beautifully?
Tian Fusheng smiled and said, "Your Majesty, Mr. Xue said he has prepared something to present to you."
Gu Yuanbai shook his head disinterestedly and turned back around. Unnoticed by him, the smile on Chu Wei's face froze for a moment. After a while, he slowly retracted his smile.
Today was a day of rest, and it was only after Gu Yuanbai brought Chu Wei into the palace that he remembered this matter. However, when he wanted to send Chu Wei back, Chu Wei shook his head. "Your Majesty, I have read a book about the Silk Road. If you are interested, may I share it with you?"
The emperor indeed became interested and put down his pen. "Then go ahead and tell me."
Chu Wei began to speak slowly and softly.
His voice was gentle and melodious, and when he slowed down his pace, it became almost hypnotic. As he recited phrases such as "zhī hū zhě yě," even the attentive Tian Fusheng and the other guards struggled to keep their eyes open, not to mention Gu Yuanbai.
When Xue Yuan confidently walked into the palace, carrying a bowl of longevity noodles he had cooked, he saw the group of guards struggling to keep their eyes open. He asked, "Where is the Emperor?"
The chief guard forced himself to perk up. "Resting in the inner chamber."
Xue Yuan strode towards the inner chamber and quietly entered. He saw the Emperor lying on a recliner near the window, fast asleep. Standing beside the recliner, Chu Wei was completely absorbed, even entranced, as he gazed at the Emperor's sleeping face.
The two men radiated an extraordinary aura, and when they were together, their appearances seemed to complement each other perfectly. Whether in motion or stillness, they resembled a meticulously crafted traditional painting, so delicate that one would hesitate to breathe too loudly, afraid of disturbing the harmony.
Outside the window, green leaves fluttered and butterflies danced, serving as a backdrop that enhanced their presence.
Xue Yuan glanced at the bowl of plain soup noodles in his hands and suddenly chuckled. He stepped back and tossed the bowl to Tian Fusheng.
Tian Fusheng asked, "What's this?"
Xue Yuan replied, "I spilled it."
Tian Fusheng was taken aback, but Xue Yuan calmly rolled down his sleeves, which he had previously rolled up while cooking the noodles, and calmly entered the inner chamber once again.
Translator's note: I have decided to use the royal pronoun We in how Gu Yuanbai addresses himself. If there's a mistake in my usage, don't hesitate to comment or message me. I'm not used in doing historical, and is learning it. Thank you for your continuous support!
I try to localize my translations to the English language as much as possible, so there might be some text lost in translation. I'm learning to use the pinyin terms, though but I'm not used to it so I might get confused a bit. LOL.
Chapter 78
Xue Yuan walked up to Chu Wei and stood still by his side.
Chu Wei noticed him, his lips pursed slightly. Instead, he gained the courage to reach out his hand toward the emperor. However, when his hand reached halfway, Xue Yuan quickly and accurately blocked it.
"Lord Chu, you've crossed the line."
Xue Yuan lowered his voice and let go of Chu Wei's hand. He took out a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his hand. He appeared to be smiling and had not made any harmful movements. Yet, Chu Wei seemed to see a cold warning in his expression.
Chu Wei expressionlessly folded his hands behind his back, the distinct bones of his long and slender fingers stiff and twitching.
Watching Chu Wei's demeanor, Xue Yuan smirked silently. He spoke gently and amiably in a low voice, "Chu Wei, with your timid nature, can you handle the emperor's demands?"
Chu Wei's expression darkened. He didn't have a preference for men, but what bothered him even more was, "Why wouldn't I be able to handle it?"
He almost blurted it out, but then he fell silent.
Xue Yuan's smile took on a hint of mockery. He walked to the side of Gu Yuanbai, stooped down, and gently cradled the emperor who was sitting on a soft couch. Chu Wei couldn't help but step forward, wanting to stop this outrageous act, but as soon as he moved, Xue Yuan grabbed the emperor's hand and lightly slapped him on the face.
Chu Wei froze.
The force was light because Xue Yuan couldn't bear to hurt Gu Yuanbai's hand. It was tender and delicate, but when these pampered hands struck Chu Wei's face, it felt even more humiliating.
Xue Yuan held this hand, with his fingers slipping between the emperor's, hitting the handsome face of the top scholar, and the expression of this heavenly prodigy changed again and again, but it was evident that he couldn't bear it.
"If he treats you like this," Xue Yuan smiled, "how could you endure it?"
He seemed to be sharing a secret, speaking in a low voice, "You can't, but I can."
Chu Wei was extremely proud. His face turned away from the slaps, and the jade-like side of his face blushed slightly. It didn't hurt, but he had a restrained look, and signs of anger were faintly hidden.
"The emperor wouldn't do such a thing." He suppressed the emotions and refuted Xue Yuan's words.
Xue Yuan continued to wipe Gu Yuanbai's hand, and Gu Yuanbai's eyelids twitched a few times, showing signs of awakening. Chu Wei's heart skipped a beat, as if he had encountered a raging flood or a fierce beast, causing him to stand upright abruptly.
Observing Chu Wei's reaction, Xue Yuan sneered disdainfully. In front of him, he placed Gu Yuanbai's hand near his lips and gave it a light kiss.
As soon as Gu Yuanbai opened his eyes, he witnessed this scene. His mind went blank, and before he could regain his senses, he slapped Xue Yuan's face with force.
After coming to his senses, an icy expression formed on Gu Yuanbai's face.
Xue Yuan turned his head slightly and smiled faintly. He casually held Gu Yuanbai's hand and brought it to his lips, blowing on it, then sighed, "I've been wanting to do this for a long time with just one slap."
"Look how tender your hand is; it's even turning red."
"Xue Yuan, are you causing trouble again?" Gu Yuanbai's face darkened as he had someone bring a dagger.
Xue Yuan's sudden sly remark made Gu Yuanbai want to break his third leg.
Kneeling on the ground, Xue Yuan looked at the dagger, his face turning pale. At a critical moment, a eunuch outside shouted in haste, "Report! Urgent news from eight hundred miles away!"
Gu Yuanbai immediately threw away the dagger and stood up, striding outside.
The eunuch reporting the urgent news looked disheveled and knelt down, handing over the urgent report to Tian Fusheng. Tian Fusheng quickly accepted it, briefly checked its contents, and then hurriedly passed it to Gu Yuanbai.
As Gu Yuanbai unfolded the letter and read its contents, his expression gradually turned serious. After putting down the letter, he slammed the table and said, "Summon the Ministers of War, Revenue, and Military Affairs to the Xuanzheng Hall for a meeting!"
"Yes!" Tian Fusheng hurriedly sent someone to summon the two ministers. Gu Yuanbai sat behind the table and took up a pen, smoothly jotting down the key points.
A locust plague had broken out in the northern region.
In ancient times, locusts, floods, and droughts were the three most common and devastating disasters.
The urgent report from the north, with the phrase "Locusts darken the sky, and no grass grows where they pass," allowed Gu Yuanbai to imagine the severity of the situation.
The Ministers of War, Revenue, and Military Affairs rushed to the Xuanzheng Hall. Gu Yuanbai had little time to spare, so he handed General Xue's documents directly to them for their review.
General Xue led the army to the northern frontier for two main purposes: to escort the merchant caravans and to deter the nomadic tribes, facilitating border trade. The primary objective of this expedition was commerce, not warfare. However, Gu Yuanbai provided him with sufficient troops and supplies. With all these provisions, General Xue initially intended to showcase his ambition and teach a lesson to the increasingly arrogant northern nomads. But upon arriving in the northern region, they were confronted with a devastating locust plague.
Wherever the locusts passed, they had already consumed all the vegetation and even the hides of animals. General Xue promptly dispatched men to protect the supplies day and night and to manually capture the locusts. However, upon their arrival in the northern frontier, the soldiers guarding the region were already on the verge of starvation. Seeing them arriving with a large quantity of provisions, the soldiers were moved to tears.
Due to the sudden locust plague, the grasslands and livestock hides became unavailable, prompting the nomads to launch multiple frequent attacks on the border.
What was even more heart-wrenching was that cannibalism had occurred in the disaster-stricken areas of the north.
General Xue immediately deployed his troops to resist external enemies and fight against the locusts, setting them on fire. A significant portion of the military provisions was also allocated to aid the civilians. With decisive and forceful measures, they managed to restore order and settle the border troops and civilians affected by the disaster. News was spread, urging the affected civilians to immediately seek refuge at the military garrisons on the border.
Through these bold policies, a glimmer of hope emerged in the hellish situation at the border. However, General Xue knew that the challenge ahead was not just the nomads but also the scarcity of food supplies and the natural calamity.
The locusts were difficult to catch, and even more challenging was the amount of provisions General Xue's army carried. Gu Yuanbai had provided them with sufficient food, but for the disaster-stricken areas, it might not last long.
After reviewing the documents, the three ministers understood why the emperor's expression was so solemn. The Minister of War spoke directly, "Your Majesty, we cannot delay. We should immediately send someone to transport food to the northern frontier. Otherwise, the casualties in the north will be severe, and there may be unrest."
The Minister of Military Affairs added gravely, "In the past, the nomads invaded the Central Plains around September when their soldiers and horses were well-fed and robust. However, from General Xue's report, it is clear that the nomads have also been severely affected by the locust plague. Their horses and livestock have nothing to eat, leading them to launch attacks earlier than expected. The nomads have always relied on their excellent horsemanship, but now they have lost their powerful mounts, presenting us with an opportunity to suppress them."
Gu Yuanbai's face was serious as he said, "After the locust plague, a series of disasters and outbreaks of diseases will likely follow. The court must be fully prepared to respond. Minister of Revenue, how is the state treasury's grain supply?"
The Minister of Revenue relaxed his expression, "Your Majesty, the looted resources from the rebellious forces in Southern Jing and Southern Hu provinces have already overwhelmed the state treasury. Additionally, there have been donations of rice and grain from all over the country. Twenty-two new granaries have been established in the capital alone, all fully stocked. Throughout the Da Heng Dynasty, any deficiencies in the granaries and meat stores have been replenished with food supplies, and with the current abundant harvests across various regions, even if we divert a significant amount of food to the northern frontier, the granaries will still be full even after a month."
As he spoke, the atmosphere lightened significantly.
The Minister of Military Affairs gained confidence and said, "Then this moment is when our Da Heng Dynasty is at its strongest and most robust."
Gu Yuanbai's expression eased slightly. Whether it was combating corruption or dealing with rebellious forces, he always danced on a minefield. Unexpectedly, the current situation had turned the unfavorable circumstances in the northern frontier into an advantage.
Indeed, the locusts had devoured the grasslands that the nomads relied on, and their cattle and sheep were slaughtered and dried to serve as provisions for their march. However, they could not consume their own horses, which were now deprived of the strong and healthy grass-fed livestock.
With the nomads lacking their powerful steeds, the Da Heng Dynasty had nothing to fear from them.
Gu Yuanbai suddenly realized that this was a golden opportunity.
A splendid opportunity to launch an offensive against the northern nomads.
This was a significant temptation, and Gu Yuanbai began to seriously consider whether he should initiate the war now.
In Gu Yuanbai's original plan, he intended to start border trade first, exchanging for fine horses and cattle from the nomads to train a large number of cavalry. Then, after a few years, when the cavalry had grown strong, transportation improved, and relay stations developed, he would decisively annihilate the nomadic tribes.
But what would be the pros and cons of starting the war now?
The advantages were self-evident. The Da Heng Dynasty's granaries were overflowing, and the nomads were currently weakened by the locust plague. If they attacked now, it would be a perfect opportunity. However, launching an early assault on the nomads would also impose a sudden and immense pressure on the Da Heng Dynasty's military logistics and its officials and civilians.
Road construction was already underway, and it would take another two to three years for smooth transportation to the northern frontier. Apart from other considerations, if they conquered such a vast grassland, communication would be difficult, and news of locust plagues like the current one might take a long time to reach Gu Yuanbai. How could they prevent the nomads from resurging in such a scenario?
Conquering the world was not difficult; what was difficult was maintaining and defending it.
Gu Yuanbai pondered extensively, his mind racing. The northern nomads were not just the Khitan Eight Tribes; there were also three branches of the Uyghurs – Gaochang, Ganzhou, and Huangtou. Apart from the Uyghur tribes, there was also a small ethnic group known as the Jurchens.
On the grasslands, there were hundreds of thousands of these nomads combined, forming a massive northern ethnic group.
However, these nomads were plagued by constant internal strife, each treating the other tribes as slaves. Even among the Khitan Eight Tribes, there were undercurrents of tension due to the impending succession of their old leaders.
Should they attack or not?
Once the imperial court launched a massive attack, the nomads would be unprepared in the initial stages. But afterwards, they would undoubtedly convene to resist as a unified force. The Da Heng Dynasty was not yet prepared for prolonged warfare, and on the grasslands, there would always be places beyond the reach of locusts. Once the nomads united, they would assist one another, leading to the unification of the nomadic tribes.
Gu Yuanbai wrestled with these thoughts as his mind raced through various scenarios.
Gu Yuanbai opened his eyes with determination. "We will attack."
The Minister of Military Affairs and the Minister of War looked at Gu Yuanbai with focused attention.
Gu Yuanbai turned to the Minister of Revenue and said concisely, "Go and mobilize the transportation of provisions immediately, to send out as much grain as possible to the northern frontier."
The Minister of Revenue complied and hurriedly left.
The Minister of War couldn't help but ask, "Your Majesty, are we really going to war?"
"Yes, we will fight," Gu Yuanbai smiled suddenly, "but border trade is also going to happen."
"I don't intend to forcefully conquer the nomads now," he continued, seeing the puzzled expressions of the two ministers, "what I want to do is to make them think that I'm about to launch a massive military campaign against them."
First, instill fear into those nomads who have grown increasingly arrogant over the years, showcasing the abundance of food and military might of the Da Heng Dynasty. When they get scared enough and start preparing to unite, that was when Gu Yuanbai will halt the war and engage them in negotiations.
He plans to give one of the tribes a title, making them the leader of all tribes, and then manipulate them through coercion and temptation to create internal strife. By treating them differently, he can easily sow discord and divisions among them.
Ideally, he would persuade the nomads to accept the establishment of imperial schools. After all, they were eager to learn about the civilization of the Da Heng Dynasty, right? The Da Heng Dynasty can offer free education to their children, and once they deeply understand the supremacy of imperial authority and the essence of Chinese characters and culture, they will be truly educated.
Educated children would report any misconduct of their parents that may harm the Great Heng Empire to the stationed officials out of fear and suspicion of each other. Controlling their thoughts through education would be the most effective method of governance.
Of course, if they refuse to accept the imperial schools, then in a few years, when the iron cavalry of the Da Heng Dynasty roams the grasslands, these hundreds of thousands of people will become laborers to liberate the labor force of the common people.
The Minister of War stroked his beard and exchanged a glance with the Minister of Military Affairs. He asked, "Your Majesty, do you have someone in mind to lead the grain transport and military troops?"
Gu Yuanbai hesitated for a moment and replied, "Xue Yuan."
Meanwhile, in the Mingsheng Relay Station.
Prince Li Angshun of Western Xia asked, "Is the person on the carriage really Prince He?"
His subordinate replied, "I saw with my own eyes that the carriage stopped in front of the prince's mansion, and the guards around it were extraordinary. It must be Prince He."
"Did you know that Prince He has been to the battlefield before?" Li Angshun pondered, showing a mocking expression, "I never expected the Prince to look like this."
He chuckled meaningfully, "Let's send one of the Western Xia beauties we brought as an apology to the Prince's mansion. Consider it a way to make amends, after all, we can't afford to offend a noble figure like the Prince in the capital of the Da Heng Dynasty."
"By the way, I want to see what Prince He really looks like," Li Angshun couldn't contain his curiosity. His slightly curled black hair fell loosely as he murmured to himself, "No matter how I look at him, he doesn't seem like someone who has experienced the battles of the battlefield."
On the contrary, he appeared pampered and delicate, even fairer than that Great Heng official named Chu Wei.
Could it be that he had mistaken him earlier?
Chapter 79
Xue Yuan had just pulled his mind out of the joy of securing the future of his descendants when the Emperor's announcement of sending him to the border with provisions and troops came crashing down on him.
Accepting the imperial decree, Xue Yuan thought repeatedly about the border and the windswept sands as he made his way from the palace back to his residence. Then, his thoughts turned to Gu Yuanbai.
This journey to the border involved both combating locusts and dispatching troops. Xue Yuan knew that it wouldn't be as simple as delivering the supplies and soldiers and returning. He was not content with just that; he had to accomplish something, to dispel the resentment and negativity that weighed on his heart.
The audacity of the border's nomads, the plight of the common people, the feebleness of the military – he had to vent his frustrations before he could come back.
He also had to show Gu Yuanbai what he was capable of. He had to demonstrate his skills and abilities to him. He needed to deter those petty individuals, making them realize that no one could surpass Xue Yuan.
He must head to the northern border; it was imperative. This journey would take at least four to five months.
By the time he returned, it might already be the following year, and he would have missed Gu Yuanbai's birthday. Did he want to join in the celebrations? Of course, he did.
It wasn't just a passing desire; it was a genuine aspiration. Xue Yuan contemplated for a long while, his thoughts revolving around how to leave an impression on the Emperor's mind.
In a time when numerous talented individuals emerged one after another, he had to be remembered for four to five months.
Lost in thought, he arrived home and noticed Madam Xue returning from outside, dressed neatly. Raising an eyebrow, he casually asked, "Where have you been?"
Madam Xue barely flinched, responding, "I went to converse with the wives of other mansions."
Xue Yuan nodded absentmindedly, then suddenly halted in his steps and turned to her, asking on a whim, "Mother, what if I've taken a liking to someone, kissed them, touched them, but they still refuse? What should I do?"
"Kissed them, touched them." These two phrases struck Madam Xue like a blow. She remained silent for a while, wiping her eyes with a handkerchief. Tears had already dampened half of it.
"..." Xue Yuan murmured softly, "What's wrong?
Without inquiring further, he went back to his room.
Provisions and supplies were swiftly mobilized, loaded onto wagons for transport. The Ministry of Works and the Ministry of War followed suit closely. As the army set out, the mechanical devices, equipment, and various military necessities they required had to be prepared in tandem. These specifics were meticulously calculated, requiring a rapid and precise execution.
The Supervisory office was busy with deploying troops and arranging the march, while the Court of State Affairs was even busier than the Supervisory Office. They meticulously calculated various accounts, and as the crisis unfolded unexpectedly, they couldn't afford any delay. They had to put aside all other matters day and night and focus solely on calculating the required military provisions.
Gu Yuanbai and the other ministers discussed matters during the morning court session, and continued their discussions even after the court session concluded. At times, the candlelight in the Imperial Study burned late into the night, and the sound of ongoing deliberations echoed within. In this bustling atmosphere, a substantial number of provisions and soldiers gradually gathered. The detailed and intricate marching plans were continuously revised, refined through a process of constant overturning and proposing.
Finally, the day came for Xue Yuan to depart for the Northern Frontier.
Xue Yuan, with a scruffy beard, brought two fully grown wolves from his residence to present them before Gu Yuanbai.
These wolves had thick fur, agile and robust limbs. Held by Xue Yuan, they stared fiercely at everyone in the hall. The palace maids paled and involuntarily took a few steps back.
Amidst his busy schedule, Gu Yuanbai managed to raise his head and, upon spotting the fierce wolves, expressed surprise, "Weren't there two wolf cubs brought earlier? Why have two wolves been sent now?"
"Those cubs were too small," Xue Yuan's voice was hoarse, "these two can protect Your Majesty."
Gu Yuanbai hesitated upon hearing this, pausing his writing, "Protect me?"
Xue Yuan replied with a deep voice and then abruptly released his grip on the wolves. The palace attendants let out cries of astonishment, but the two wolves strolled leisurely and approached Gu Yuanbai's robes, sniffing around before lying down by the Emperor's side.
The sudden release of the wolves made Gu Yuanbai's heart race, and he remained stiff, looking down at the two wolves beside him.
Xue Yuan explained, "They've been tamed. They won't bite anyone, not even Your Majesty. When I'm not here, they'll protect you, so I can leave with peace of mind."
Gu Yuanbai's eyelids twitched, and he remained motionless, "You leave with peace of mind? So, in your eyes, our Imperial Guards are nothing more than paper tigers?"
"Not the same."
Xue Yuan gestured to Tian Fusheng and succinctly instructed, "Steward Tian, go pour His Majesty a cup of tea."
Tian Fusheng's legs trembled like chaff, and he managed a strained smile, "This, Lord Xue... Is this appropriate?"
Xue Yuan, however, insisted, "Hurry."
Tian Fusheng glanced at the Emperor, who had already relaxed knowing that the two wolves remained obediently still. Gu Yuanbai leaned back in his chair and nodded at Tian Fusheng.
Wolves were not dogs. Gu Yuanbai was quite curious to see how Xue Yuan had managed to tame these two wolves and what protective actions they could undertake.
Tian Fusheng, wearing a troubled expression, brought a cup of tea forward, trembling as he approached. The cup rattled as he drew closer to Gu Yuanbai, who was about five paces away. The two wolves, lying on the ground with their eyes half-closed, suddenly opened their eyes and cast a glance at him. Their beastly eyes were deep and profound. The water in Tian Fusheng's cup shook violently. Anxiously, he moved closer and eventually managed to place the tea on the table before the Emperor.
Xue Yuan's lips curled into a faint smile. He signaled another guard to draw closer with a drawn blade. Before the guard could even approach, the two wolves had already stood up. Their fur bristled, and their sharp teeth made low growls as their gaze remained fixed on the guard. They were ready to attack and pounce at any moment.
Gu Yuanbai remained silent for a moment. He seemed to be excited, as if he had acquired a wild yet intriguing new toy. Although his face appeared calm, his heart raced. He leaned forward and cautiously touched the heads of the two wolves, saying slowly, "What if they bite the wrong person?"
"They don't eat human flesh," Xue Yuan explained. "Every day, Your Majesty feeds them raw meat. That way, they won't bite anyone fatally. And if they do bite the wrong person, it will be someone who dares to approach Your Majesty with a drawn blade."
Xue Yuan paused briefly, then continued, "They are smart. They know who to bite and who not to. There's no room for error. If Your Majesty points at someone, they'll spring into action, even if it means getting their teeth broken."
Gu Yuanbai bent down and tentatively touched the heads of the two wolves. He spoke slowly, "I understand that you're talking about wolves, not dogs."
Xue Yuan chuckled softly, and even his disheveled beard seemed charming at this moment. "When wolves encounter Your Majesty, they have to become obedient dogs."
His voice was low, and Gu Yuanbai couldn't hear him clearly. His attention was stolen by the majestic presence of the two wolves. "What dogs?"
"I just mean, Your Majesty can rest assured and use them like dogs," Xue Yuan smiled faintly. "If their teeth break, I have plenty of wolves in my residence. They've all been taught their lessons, to a greater or lesser extent. If you discard these two, Your Majesty can simply choose another from my residence."
"If they can't protect Your Majesty," he pondered for a moment, nonchalantly continuing, "then when I return, I'll treat Your Majesty to a pot of wolf meat soup."
As if understanding Xue Yuan's words, the two wolves suddenly trembled all over, stood up with their tails tucked between their legs, and approached Gu Yuanbai. They whimpered and nuzzled against Gu Yuanbai's hand, inviting him to stroke their fur.
Gu Yuanbai smiled and petted their heads, showing an unusual level of ruthlessness, "Alright, I've never tasted wolf meat before."
The whimpering of the two wolves grew louder.
Xue Yuan turned to Tian Fusheng and asked, "Steward Tian, how are the two wolf cubs I sent to His Majesty earlier?"
Tian Fusheng was now quite nervous whenever he heard Xue Yuan speak. He replied honestly, "The two wolf cubs that Lord Xue sent are being raised in the Beast Garden."
"And what about the red fox?"
Tian Fusheng responded, "They're all in the Beast Garden."
Everything seemed to have fallen into silence.
Xue Yuan sighed, "Those two wolf cubs are quite attached to people. If I'm not around, Your Majesty, please remember to visit them often."
Gu Yuanbai withdrew his hand and took a handkerchief from a palace attendant to wipe his hand, "Since they're so attached, why do they only stick to me? Aren't the eunuchs and palace maids who take care of them considered people as well?"
"Not the same."
When Xue Yuan tamed these wolves, he let them sniff items belonging to Gu Yuanbai, saying, "This is the scent of your other master, your mother has this scent too, understand?"
But he couldn't say that. If he did, he might end up with more than he bargained for from the mother of these wolf cubs.
Xue Yuan tilted his head slightly, "Your Majesty is correct. Earlier, you mentioned being interested in my horse. I brought it here for you. The horse is called Liefeng. You can have someone take it to the stable now."
"You..." Gu Yuanbai hesitated, "Indeed, I did take a liking to that horse, but there are priorities. Lord Xue, you currently need a good horse for your journey to the Northern Frontier. Keep it for yourself, and you can save me the trouble of rewarding you."
Wolves and horses again. Gu Yuanbai always had a feeling that Xue Yuan was trying to leave everything with him before leaving.
As soon as the Emperor spoke, Xue Yuan didn't argue. He simply said "alright" with a smile and watched as the Emperor's five fingers slid through the wolf's fur, "Does Your Majesty like gray fur?"
"It doesn't matter if We like it or not," Gu Yuanbai casually replied, "as long as it feels comfortable." (translator's note: I'm trying my best to use the "we," the royal pronoun for royalties but I forget sometimes. I'm not used to it, please understand. Thanks.)
After saying this, he suddenly remembered Xue Yuan's abundant hair. His expression changed slightly, and his hand, resting on the wolf's head, hesitated for a moment.
Amidst the busyness of the past few days, it was as if he had forgotten something. Now, it suddenly came to mind—the very thing he had intended to sever, Xue Yuan's 'root'.
A true embodiment of a heavenly son, the protagonist of this tale. It was quite a coincidence that Gu Yuanbai, the one who had contemplated exterminating Xue Yuan's lineage, found himself faced with an urgent situation that spanned eight hundred li.
Tomorrow was the expedition. Gu Yuanbai thought absentmindedly, wondering if he would still be able to ride tomorrow after having it severed today.
"Your Majesty," after a while, Xue Yuan spoke again, "I said before that I wanted to give a jade finger ring to my future wife. It was just a casual remark. Anything presented to Your Majesty belongs to you. There's no question of whether to keep it or return it."
Gu Yuanbai touched the jade finger ring on his hand, turning it around. His voice was deep, "Hmm?"
Xue Yuan smiled gently, "I'd like to inquire, does the reward offered earlier still hold weight now?"
Gu Yuanbai turned the jade finger ring back and forth, "It holds weight."
"Your Majesty's favor is abundant," Xue Yuan said, "Before I leave, I wish to bathe in Your Majesty's blessings."
"I want to take a bath... in your bathwater."
After leaving the palace, Xue Yuan not only bathed in the Emperor's bathwater but also filled a water container before departing.
Although the palace's spring water was regularly replaced and cleaned, Xue Yuan knew that the Emperor had taken a bath this morning. When he spoke with Xue Yuan, one could catch a faint whiff of the refreshing scent of water dew by simply getting a little closer. Gu Yuanbai was a man of his word. Even if Xue Yuan's request was slightly irregular, he nodded in agreement.
Xue Yuan patted the water container at his side and felt pleased.
He himself had picked up a hint of the palace's fragrance, mixed with a very faint medicinal scent. This fragrance was quite similar to the one emanating from the Emperor's body. While soaking in the bath, Xue Yuan felt as though Gu Yuanbai was right beside him.
It was as if both of them were bare-skinned, intimately touching.
As a result, after finishing his bath, Xue Yuan stood by the pool for quite some time, needing to pull his mind out of this enchanting illusion.
After he left, within the palace.
Tian Fusheng discreetly conversed with the head guard, "Look at Lord Xue. He's brought those little wolves and big wolves here twice. I get scared just by a glance, so why isn't he afraid?"
The head guard remained vigilant, keeping a close eye on the two wolves that the Emperor had allowed to rest near the table. He replied, "Lord Xue is a bold individual. It's not surprising that he likes these creatures."
Tian Fusheng sighed, "Lord Xue's temperament is quite daunting. Even just a glance from him makes me uneasy. It's strange how he's not the same with His Majesty. The Emperor carries immense dignity, yet he has the audacity to use His Majesty's bathwater. It just goes to show that this man, indeed, can change his abilities and characteristics, but not his lustful desires."
The head guard disagreed, "Is it fair to label it as lustful desires? Isn't Lord Xue just seeking to bathe in His Majesty's blessings and find solace?"
Tian Fusheng paused, then glanced at him. It was only now that he remembered the head guard wasn't aware of Xue Yuan's previous expression of affection to the Emperor. He shuddered, cold sweat forming on his forehead. He quickly corrected himself, "Exactly, I misspoke. Chief Zhang, please don't take it seriously. I was speaking nonsense, and it's not to be believed."
The head guard sighed, "Steward Tian, you mustn't be so casual with your words next time."
Tian Fusheng wiped away his sweat, "Yes."
That night, when Gu Yuanbai fell asleep, the two wolves were also resting in front of the inner chamber. The palace servants tiptoed out from the inner chamber, speaking in hushed tones even softer than usual.
However, Gu Yuanbai's sleep that night was even deeper than usual.
As the sky brightened on the second day, it was the day of Xue Yuan's departure for the northern border.
Gu Yuanbai bid farewell to the soldiers alongside the officials. His expression was solemn, with a weighty trust reflected in his eyes. "Xue Qing, lead the soldiers and provisions safely to the border, and return safely."
Xue Yuan was clad in silver armor, the heavy plates adorning his body, making him imposing and powerful. After bowing, he straightened up, slightly lowering his head, his gaze fixed on Gu Yuanbai's eyes.
His tied-up long hair cascaded down his back. Fully prepared, a sense of killing intent and sharpness emanated from the corners of his eyes.
Under the scorching sun, his aura was fierce, his determination resolute.
After a moment of eye contact, Xue Yuan suddenly lifted his robe, swiftly and gracefully kneeling down. Gu Yuanbai hadn't anticipated such a grand gesture, and he bent down to help him up. However, just as he did, Xue Yuan straightened up abruptly, planting a kiss on Gu Yuanbai's cheek.
It happened so quickly, almost like an illusion, and no one saw it.
Gu Yuanbai's hand, in the process of assisting, froze.
"I'll be away for four or five months. You can't forget me," Xue Yuan whispered, his warm breath brushing against Gu Yuanbai's cheek, "Wait for me. Before I return, don't let anyone touch you, whether it's a finger or a strand of hair. Promise?"
After suppressing his feelings for over two months, and learning the rules for the same duration, Xue Yuan knew that he wouldn't win over Gu Yuanbai like this.
Because Gu Yuanbai wouldn't fall for an obedient dog.
However, Gu Yuanbai didn't explode in anger. He smiled gently and said softly, "That's not possible."
"It's fine," Xue Yuan chuckled, "With wolves protecting you, who would dare touch you? Whoever dares to touch you, whether it's a finger or a strand of hair, my wolves will bite off that finger. When I return from the northern border, whoever's missing a finger, I'll personally come knocking with a knife."
Finishing his words, he bowed deeply, performing three kowtows and nine prostrations.
With the ceremony completed, he stood up, mounted his horse in a swift and clean motion, his cloak billowing, his robe rustling.
"Depart."
Thousands of troops and supplies formed a winding procession, with provisions protected at its core. Besides Xue Yuan, dozens of talented individuals recognized by the court for their expertise in combating locusts joined the journey. Additionally, there were hundreds of carts loaded with essential medicinal herbs.
Several hundred doctors accompanied the group to prevent potential diseases after the locust plague.
Each soldier was strong and robust, with towering physiques. They were well-fed with meals and salt, and now fully equipped. They could wield both large swords and shields, as well as bear the weight of heavy armor. The horses were even more well-fed and robust, their mounted riders letting out resounding roars.
These roars echoed the satisfaction of consuming rich horse fodder on ordinary days.
Such a formidable force should logically achieve victory.
As Gu Yuanbai stood there, watching the long procession gradually disappear from his sight, those around him were ignited with fervor. Their breaths grew heavier.
He took out a handkerchief and leisurely wiped his face, all the while pondering: Bring me victory.
A great triumph, where the silver spent like flowing water to maintain the troops was exchanged for victory.
Let the nomadic tribes witness the transformation of Da Heng's soldiers, let them witness how the emperor of Da Heng has changed.
And have these transformed emperor and soldiers gained enough strength to compel them to obediently cheer and praise?
Gu Yuanbai was truly looking forward to it.
Chapter 80
A locust plague struck the northern region of Da Heng. The Emperor wished to cancel the festival, but all the preparations had already been made in advance. Envoys from various foreign courts had arrived in the capital. Whether it was for the sake of appearances or substance, courtiers took turns persuading the Emperor to proceed with the festival as planned.
The news of Emperor Gu Yuanbai dispatching troops and supplies to the northern border couldn't be concealed from the foreign envoys who had already arrived in the capital. So, he straightforwardly invited these envoys to witness the departure of Da Heng's forces in person, allowing them to see the military preparations firsthand.
These envoys were brought to the top of the city wall, where they gazed down upon the countless troops below. Unbeknownst to them, a faint chill ran down their spines as they looked upon this vast sea of soldiers and horses.
From above, the number of soldiers and horses seemed endless, marching forward in perfect order along with the supplies. The sea of banners covered the sky, exuding a formidable and imposing aura.
For many years, Da Heng had refrained from engaging in warfare. Although it remained large and formidable, neighboring countries had detected signs of its gradual decline. The rulers of Da Heng appeared hesitant, allowing nomadic tribes to wreak havoc along the borders. As a result, neighboring nations began to consider testing the strength of the once-mighty empire.
But now.
As these envoys gazed upon the densely-packed soldiers of Da Heng beneath their feet, and observed each soldier's well-equipped attire and robust physique, they found it hard to believe. How could the soldiers of Da Heng be so spirited?
Their horses were robust, their soldiers full of vitality. And what about those countless carts of provisions? Did the Emperor of Da Heng take out all the grain from the granaries?!
Weren't they afraid that depleting all these provisions now would leave them vulnerable to natural disasters and misfortune, leading to the downfall of Da Heng?
The envoys couldn't fathom it.
No matter how much doubt or disbelief they held, they still engraved this astonishing scene in their memories. The spectacle was so overwhelming that their scalps tingled, legs stiffened, and they found themselves immobilized.
It wasn't until the army disappeared from their view that a eunuch beside them reminded them, shaking them from their trance.
A nearby officer of the Imperial Guards chuckled modestly and said, "These soldiers are merely a small fraction of the Imperial Guards. Please forgive us for the inconvenience."
An interpreter from the Honglu Temple accompanied them and respectfully translated the officer's words to the foreign envoys, with an air of utmost humility.
The foreign envoys wore strange expressions. Was this humility? It seemed more like a display of power!
Among these envoys, there was no trace of the envoy from Western Xia. They were still confined within the Ming Sheng Inn, learning the ways of Da Heng. As long as they hadn't mastered these ways, they weren't allowed to leave.
These envoys didn't bother to inquire about the whereabouts of the envoy from Western Xia.
Before witnessing today's scene, these foreign envoys might have harbored some suspicions regarding Da Heng's condition after the locust plague. However, after witnessing the spectacle today, their doubts dissipated.
Even the most devastating locust plague wouldn't have consumed all the provisions to the point that soldiers could only survive for three months. The northern locust plague hadn't posed a significant threat to Da Heng. Furthermore, seeing the officials and citizens in the capital city celebrating the Emperor's birthday with such enthusiasm, they couldn't help but feel that Da Heng hadn't yet reached a point of food scarcity.
These envoys racked their brains, hoping to find traces of Da Heng pretending to be strong despite adversity. However, no matter how they looked at it, all they saw were the exuberant citizens preparing for the upcoming Wanshou Festival.
The Emperor of Da Heng was by no means a plunderer, and he did not use this as a reason to ask foreign envoys to contribute to the relief efforts in the northern region afflicted by locusts. After showcasing the might of his forces, he courteously released the envoys, even sending eloquent officials to accompany them on a tour of the capital city.
While strolling through the city, the envoys occasionally pointed to wooden structures guarded by officials on the roadside, asking, "What is this?"
A Da Heng official glanced at them and casually replied, "Oh, this is the foot-operated fan cart."
Foot-operated fan cart?
The envoys inquired further, "Is this different from the previous fan carts?"
"There's no difference from the previous fan carts," the official explained, "except that they are foot-operated now, which makes it easier and more efficient. It helps clean the bran and dust from the grain more effectively."
The envoys observed as citizens lined up before the fan carts. After each cleaning, they paid a small portion of their grain as a usage fee, based on the weight of the husks removed, or handed over the separated bran.
The quantities were meager. Even the least prosperous citizens had the resources to come for husking. Not only on the roadside, but groups of people also pushed larger fan carts with great effort further away.
"These are the larger fan carts," the official explained, "usually kept in government offices. If citizens need them, they can apply together based on their households and rent the fan carts from the government."
One envoy was certain, "That must be expensive."
The official remained composed, saying, "Not at all. Each household only needs to pay a hundred wen. With such a large fan cart, it takes at most two to three days to finish husking. If someone is diligent and thrifty, they could forgo eating and drinking and complete the task in a day."
Five households formed a group, and for a larger fan cart, it was five hundred wen per day, which was equivalent to a couple of silver coins over two days. When divided among the citizens, it was an affordable amount. A hundred wen per household per day wasn't really expensive.
The envoys entertained various thoughts, and the official quickly changed the subject, leading their focus to the colorful paintings and bright fabrics on the streets.
After returning to the palace, Emperor Gu placed an order to issue new titles for the two ladies of the Xue residence.
The senior and junior madams of the Xue family were both granted higher titles. With the men of the Xue residence having already departed, only some inconspicuous and inconsequential members remained. Emperor Gu had to make it clear that the Xue family should not be trifled with.
Once these matters were settled, Emperor Gu finally breathed a sigh of relief. He kicked the two wolves lying next to the documents and instructed the palace attendants, "Ensure they're well-fed daily. Don't let them starve and stare at me on an empty stomach."
Tian Fusheng advised, "Your Majesty, wolves are naturally fierce creatures. It's not advisable to keep them by your side."
Emperor Gu smirked, "I like it."
He had engaged in many dangerous and thrilling activities, but amusingly, he hadn't yet kept two adult wolves by his side.
His inherent nature was stirring; even though he knew it was dangerous, he couldn't resist the itch in his heart and hands.
After some thought, Emperor Gu instructed, "Find a few experts in animal training to assess how well these two wolves have been tamed."
Tian Fusheng acknowledged and left to find suitable individuals.
"Wolves," Emperor Gu murmured several times. He suddenly heard a few inhales of breath and turned to see the two gray wolves that had been lying in the corner. They had heard his voice and stood up, walking to his side.
Though their appearance was intimidating, at the moment they were whimpering softly, behaving as if they were inviting his favor.
Xue Yuan had truly trained them well.
Emperor Gu extended his hand, and one of the wolves approached, nuzzling against his hand. Its crimson tongue licked across sharp teeth and its snout, brushing against Emperor Gu's hand.
As he scratched the wolf, Emperor Gu also retrieved a discourse delivered by Kong Yilin some time ago and slowly began reading it.
This discourse by Kong Yilin was over five thousand characters long. If translated into plain language, it would likely be around twenty thousand characters. Emperor Gu read it slowly because only by doing so could he fully grasp and understand the meanings within it, and then internalize them as his own.
By the time he had read more than half of the discourse, darkness had fallen outside. Dinner was served, and Emperor Gu sat at the table with the discourse in hand. After a few bites, he realized that there were some "simplified characters" within the text.
"Folk characters" referred to modern simplified Chinese characters. Chinese characters had been categorized as simplified or traditional since ancient times. In the text, whenever there were complicated characters with numerous strokes, Kong Yilin had used simplified characters for convenience.
Looking at these characters, Emperor Gu felt a sense of familiarity. Sometimes, upon seeing them, he would simply smile, feeling a deep sense of warmth.
The flickering lamp light illuminated the room as the night deepened. Before retiring to his palace, a report arrived from the Supervisory office.
"Your Majesty, the newly appointed county magistrate of Huangpu City has discovered a peculiar-looking fruit in the local area," the report stated. "This fruit is bright red all over and charmingly small. The locals refer to it as the 'Red Lantern Fruit.'"
Emperor Gu suddenly lifted his head, his eyes gleaming.
"The county magistrate of Huangpu City was moved by Your Majesty's birthday and also remembered the anti-corruption efforts. He believed that this was a divine fruit bestowed by heaven, so he reported it and hastily transported it to the capital. However, this 'Red Lantern Fruit' is brightly colored, as red as fire, and may be highly toxic."
This should be referring to tomatoes.
Although tomatoes originated in South America, there have been instances where experts found tomato seeds in a Han Dynasty tomb in 1983. However, it couldn't be ascertained whether these were preserved since the Han Dynasty or were accidentally introduced through tomb robbing or transportation. Thus, Emperor Gu had no hope of tasting tomatoes in his lifetime.
Now, suddenly learning that tomatoes might have been found, Emperor Gu suppressed his joy and excitement and immediately ordered, "Bring it here for me to see."
The Supervisory office personnel presented four or five Red Lantern Fruits. Emperor Gu recognized at a glance that these must be tomatoes. An attendant put on gloves for him, and Emperor Gu picked up a tomato, feeling its texture. These fruits had been carefully selected – their skin was smooth, and they were vibrant red. He had a bowl brought over, applied some pressure, and the tomato burst open, revealing its tender flesh and tangy juices. The aroma was rich, and the slightly sour taste made his mouth water involuntarily.
These tomatoes were a bit smaller in appearance than modern ones, but their taste seemed unchanged.
After setting the tomato down, Emperor Gu instructed, "Half of these Red Lantern Fruits will be preserved for planting seeds, and the other half will be sent to the Imperial Medical Institute for toxicity testing. Once confirmed safe for consumption, report back to me immediately."
The Surveillance Bureau personnel nodded in agreement.
Emperor Gu washed his hands and looked at the damaged tomato and its juice in the bowl. He sighed softly, "Just dispose of it."
This surprise was truly the biggest he had received in recent days.
While they couldn't be consumed now for safety reasons, Emperor Gu knew in his heart that these fruits were likely harmless. Once confirmed, these tangy and delicious items, suitable for both soups and dishes, would quickly grace the tables of commoners if the production could keep up.
Tomatoes truly were the biggest gift he had received for his birthday this year.
The Emperor received the auspicious red fruits, while Prince He, two days later around noon, received a unique apology gift brought by the envoy from Western Xia.
A beautiful woman from Western Xia.
Women from Western Xia were renowned for their beauty, their allure celebrated in many writings and poems. The woman brought to Prince He's residence was exceptionally stunning, adorned with hairpins and delicate makeup, her rosy cheeks rivaling blooming flowers.
She was brought by Mr. Wang, a retainer in Prince He's residence, who explained, "The envoy from Western Xia said this is an apology gift for Prince He."
Prince He's expression remained stern as he sat on his high seat.
The woman from Western Xia raised her gaze to observe his appearance, performed a courtesy, and stood up gracefully with supple movements.
"An apology gift for me?" Prince He questioned, "Why does he need to offer me an apology gift?"
Mr. Wang spoke softly, "It's said that the envoy from Western Xia once collided with Your Highness, and he felt concerned about it. Therefore, he specially came to offer this gift as an apology."
Hearing this, Prince He's brow furrowed involuntarily.
Why hadn't he known that the Western Xia envoy had collided with him?
"Take it back. I'm not interested," Prince He said and stood up, his tone agitated. "Tell those Western Xia envoys not to meddle with what they shouldn't. Offering a woman to bribe me, what do they want me to do?"
"If there was truly a collision, then he should bring the gift in person and explain the reasons to me," Prince He sneered, "What kind of man hides behind a woman? Leave. Mr. Wang, you better come to your senses. Don't agree to everything or bring anyone to me. If you can't resist the charms of a woman, then you should enjoy those charms yourself!"
With that, Prince He waved his sleeve and left the hall with large strides.
Mr. Wang's expression remained unchanged. He smiled slightly, turned to the Western Xia woman, and said, "Please go back."
This morning, the Western Xia envoys finally grasped the customs of Da Heng and were able to freely enter and leave the inn. However, in the evening, the Western Xia woman they had just sent was sneakily returned. For the proud Western Xia people, who had always taken pride in the beauty of their women, this humiliation was more intense than learning the customs of Da Heng.
Li Angshun sat by the table with an unsettled expression. "Prince He kept me here for more than ten days, and now he's completely forgotten about me?"
The Western Xia woman kept her head lowered, not daring to speak.
The more Li Angshun thought about it, the darker his expression became. He clenched his fist and sneered, "So, you remember the appearance of Prince He?"
The Western Xia woman replied, "Prince He has a handsome and exceptionally refined appearance."
Li Angshun's expression shifted slightly. "Exceptionally refined?"
He recalled the sight of half a chin he had glimpsed in the carriage and the fingers that lifted the curtain. Could that appearance truly be called "handsome" and "exceptionally refined"?
If she had mentioned "handsome," he might have believed her, but looking at the woman's choice of words, he could only discern a sense of determination and courage, without anything else.
During the days Li Angshun had been confined in the inn, forcibly learning the customs, he often found himself thinking repeatedly about the person who had looked down on him from above in the carriage. Just the thought of it was like enduring hardship for the sake of a greater goal, allowing him to endure the discomfort and humiliation while continuing to learn the customs.
Whenever he couldn't bear it any longer, he would think about how, after leaving this place, he could humiliate Prince He face-to-face, making Prince He feel as uncomfortable as he did now. Yet, who would have thought that Prince He wouldn't even remember him?
The Western Xia prince's face darkened under the candlelight. "He wanted me to come and apologize in person with a gift. Then, I will personally go there tomorrow."
