AN: This story is getting bigger and bigger the more I write. I'm concerned about the grammar and pacing, but if the dialogue is weird, or anything else, don't hesitate to let me know.
I truly hope this chapter was worth the 2 year wait...
The Royal Palace – The Capital
2:30 PM
*MUNCH*
The meat in his mouth has been enhancing the show before him. His tongue savored the flavors as they exploded in his mouth. It reminded him of the meal he will soon be having.
And once this show ends, Prime Minister Honest will have this next meal.
He wiped the scrapes off his long, grey beard and returned his attention to the show. He would never squander such things.
They always say "delay, don't deny", and Honest loved the delay. It made the meal far more worth the bite.
He adjusted his horned crown and held his large stomach towards the corner of the Emperor's throne. Sitting in it was the young Emperor himself.
The boy's headdress stood tall above his small head. His eyes laid firm with false resolve. And his hands held the golden scepter tightly with blind certainty.
Honest smiled. The right words given to the young boy resulted in this grand performance and led to the presence of the soul who was under his gaze.
Beneath Honest, at the cusp of the throne stairs by the royal hands, knelt Domestic Administrator Shoi.
His duties mattered little to Honest, he never bothered to learn such things.
However, he always loved to know what people could offer him. For poor Shoi, he happens to have his next great meal.
Prime Minister Honest raised his large finger to the young boy.
The Emperor saw this, prompting him to proceed.
"Domestic Administrator Shoi," his high voice boomed with confidence, "For speaking out publicly against our policies, and interfering with matters of the state..."
Honest grinned when the boy stood taller.
"We decree that you shall be drawn and quartered by bull."
He heard the murmurs of the royal hands, and the sharp gasp from Shoi. His jaw began to quiver, and his knees looked ready to buckle.
Yes. What a fantastic show!
This was exactly what Honest had hoped to see. If only he could make this moment last forever. To see how far he could take this anguish until he breaks the man.
"Isn't that the right way to handle it, Minister?"
He was brought back to the young boy, reminding himself of his own position.
All the boy needed a little validation, and a little push to make the right choices.
*MUNCH*
Honest took another bite of his snack as he moved closer to the boy.
He couldn't stop the humorous smile from growing on his face.
"Oh yes, Your Royal Highness. That was wonderful," he said with complete praise, "You truly are the wisest ruler the Empire could ever dream of!"
*MUNCH*
He took another bite, wanting the flavors to coat his teeth.
"Meat again?" the Emperor pointed out, "You really eat that a lot."
Honest's smile turned into a chuckle.
"Oh Your Highness," he said, "I must enjoy these treats while I'm still bursting with life!"
He burst into a full, cheerful laughter. The irony in his statement bleed out like a slit throat. Honest couldn't image a time when he'll not be filled with life.
He was wise, cunning, healthy, handsome, and above all, invincible. It was he that earned such treats, he that took over the Empire, and he that will rule above all!
He clapped his hands with gleeful power.
"Buono!" he cried, "Buono!"
"YOUR MAJESTY! PLEASE HEAD MY WORDS!"
His glee got caught in his throat.
"The Minister does not care for the Empire!" Shoi pleaded, "He is a wolf in sheep's clothing!"
Tears began to leave the administrator's eyes. He had no reason to resume formalities; he had nothing to lose.
"Please, lend your ears to the voices of the people!" he continued, "The Minister only cares for power! Please, you have to see it!"
…
…
…
"...Well, Minister, did you hear what he said?"
Shoi's eyes threatened to leave his sockets.
His mouth gapped open.
The shaking continued once more.
All of this served to amuse Honest.
What exactly was Shoi hoping to achieve with that display? There was nothing he could say that could change this outcome. For any attempt at disrupting Honest's plans were feeble.
"Well, it's a rather interesting claim, Your Majesty," he relaxed, "But I wouldn't put any weight onto his words."
Honest's smile grew wide when he saw Shoi's eyes dilate in horror.
"It would seem that the stress has caused the poor fellow to be a little touched in the head," he implied, "Perhaps it's time to bring things to its end before he continues to ramble on."
After all, his meal should be here real soon.
"Oh, of course," said the young boy, "You're absolutely right! You haven't led me astray before, this man must be insane."
Shoi began to panic.
"N-NO!"
He tried to stand up.
*WHAM*
But the swift strike from the royal guard's spear forced him back to the ground.
Honest chuckled. That smack by the royal guard brought him great pleasure.
Everything was finally coming to an end.
His next meal will soon arrive.
But Honest didn't allow himself to leave the show. He never squandered such things. Delay, don't deny. And he loved delaying.
Honest began to approach the downed man.
"Oh Shoi," he spoke with faux disappointment, "How unfortunate it is that we must part ways."
Shoi looked into his eyes.
The fear was fueled further.
Honest wanted to milk whatever was left of the poor man's mind. But it seemed Shoi had other plans.
He quickly refocused his efforts back towards the Emperor.
"Your Majesty!" he begged, "Please, listen to me! The Empire's thousand-year history is doomed to end if this persists!"
Honest smiled remained. The Emperor would not listen to the words of an insane man.
"PLEASE! I'M BEGGING YOU! DON'T DO THIS!"
"Oh hush now, Shoi."
The Administrator looked up at the kneeling Prime Minister.
Honest smiled at the grand finale. His meal is almost here.
"There's no need to worry."
He drew closer to the downed administrator.
"The kingdom is in capable hands. I promise that I, as Prime Minister, will do everything in my power to prevent anything and everything from dooming this great Empire."
He drew even closer. His voice grew more silent.
"And don't worry about your beautiful wife…"
He saw Shoi's eyes widen.
"Her care will now be in my hands…"
Shoi looked into Honest's hungry eyes.
"I promise to take great care of her…"
His mouth began to drool.
"Every single piece of her."
…
…
…
*SNAP*
Honest snapped his fingers. The guards lifted Shoi up.
"NO!" he screamed, "YOU DEMON!"
He was dragged away from Honest, who smiled blissfully at the display.
"YOUR HIGHNESS, YOU CAN'T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN!"
The royal hands present trembled in fear of the Prime Minister.
"PLEASE, HE'LL DESTROY THIS EMPIRE!"
"This" Empire? No, this was his Empire!
"CAN'T YOU SEE THIS! CAN ANYONE SEE THIS EVIL!?"
Honest waved at the doomed man. A crazed grin threatened to break into his face for what was to come.
"PLEASE YOU CANNOT IGNORE THIS EVIL!"
There was so much more he wanted to do. So many things he wanted to take. So many meals he wanted to eat.
"HE IS A DEMON! THAT MAN IS A DEMON!"
He will milk this Empire dry. He will take everything it has to offer him. And he will watch the denizens of this fine Empire crumble and cry beneath his feet.
"PLEASE! HE MUST BE STOPPED! HE CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO LIVE! PLEASE!
"PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE!"
And the large royal hall doors slammed shut.
Night Raid Base
4:09 PM
"No matter how you see yourself, we're still murderers.
"There is no justice to be found in what we do.
"All of us could be made to pay for our actions at any time."
Those words kept repeating in Mine's head.
It only further fueled her frustration.
She tossed and turned on her bed.
Who does that guy think he is? Acting like she didn't know what it meant to be an assassin. Mine wasn't stupid!
It means she's a killer, a murderer, and everything else in between. Everyone knows that!
She laid down and covered herself under her comforter. Her tears had long since dried, but she was still far from calm.
No matter what she did, her thoughts kept returning to that damn newbie.
"Heartless...JERK!"
She slammed her fist against the mattress.
Who tries to kill a little refuge girl?
And who murders random thugs?! She wanted them beaten, not killed!
Not even Akame would do that, and she was trained by the Capital.
Mine just wanted retribution. To punish those jerks. But not like that!
What kind of sicko goes to those extremes?!
She huffed underneath her covers.
It was so despicable. So fucking horrible! She wasn't going to tell anybody! She's a refuge child; no one would listen to her anyway!
…
…
…
No one would listen to her anyway…
Mine's mind went to the cold nights she spent in her childhood hometown. The lack of any sympathy and care, shown by the disregard she was given for her existence. All because of her blood.
She remembered those hungry days of walking, not knowing where or what her next "bed" will be. Her shaking arms begging for food. The fear of thieves and violent killers out for her head. And the horror of believing she would die alone.
It was something Mine could never forget.
And that bastard...That dumb bastard! To kill a refuge child like she was worth nothing!
"Being an assassin…Give me a break!"
That's such a load of shit!
Nobody ever meant that!
We just say that so everyone takes this job seriously!
Nobody has ever had to kill a child! Not even Leone!
"GrrrrRRRRR!"
Mine slammed her fists onto her mattress once more. The tears threatened to return.
It was all that newbie's fault!
She hates him! She hates everything about him!
*knock* *knock* *knock*
Mine's anger was cut short.
She uncovered her head to view the door.
She was far too upset to even think about seeing anyone. There was no way that door was gonna open.
In a quick huff, she covered her head again.
*knock* *knock* *knock* *knock* *knock*
…
…
…
*knock* *knock* *knock*
Mine scrunched her closed eyes.
Her frustration was building up.
*knock* *knock* *knock* *knock* *knock*
"God damn it."
She uncovered her head.
"Leave me alone!"
"Mine, please let me in."
Mine was caught off guard by the authoritative voice.
"I've already heard what happened."
She forcefully quelled her mind. She may be upset, but there was no way she was going to let anyone know.
"Look, I'm sorry about the screaming, alright?" Mine frustratingly released, "I'm fine now, I just want to be alone."
Mine hoped she got the hint.
"Please Mine," a second voice said, "Open the door…"
The voice was very gentle and far more calming. It could only belong to one person.
"We just want to make sure you're alright, I'm worried about you."
Mine stared at the door for a couple of seconds.
She huffed, forcefully removing her comforter and pushing herself off the bed.
She made an annoyed trot to the door and opened it.
Sheele raised her hand awkwardly in greeting.
But she was overshadowed by the woman behind her.
Mine's boss, and the leader of Night Raid.
Najenda.
Her face was stilted, and her posture was as stiff as usual. Her metal arm certainly didn't help with that.
"Is it alright if...uh..." Najenda chose her words carefully, "...If we could talk inside your room, Mine?"
Mine closed her eyes in slight annoyance.
"...Fine," she moved out of the way, waving her arm quickly in her room, "Come in."
They slowly entered her room.
Their footsteps were soft, annoyingly so.
Najenda's face was still, very annoyingly so.
But Sheele's was still filled with worry for her. Mine couldn't help but feel a little bad. She didn't like making people worry, especially her best friend.
She took a deep breath and returned her focus to Najenda, who was looking around her room.
It's weird, Mine can't remember the last time the boss was ever in her room.
"Boss," Mine caught her attention, "If you wanna sit down, you can take the one by my desk."
She pointed at her pink desk, coupled with a pink chair.
Najenda nodded, silently lifting the chair to sit in reverse. She leaned forward with her arms rested on the backrest. Her face had yet to move.
But Sheele's face still held concern. Mine must have really scared her. She couldn't help but wonder what she was thinking of saying.
Sheele didn't know what else to say.
It was always difficult for Mine to open up. She knew how hardheaded she was. At times, not even her own words could breach her ears.
But still, Sheele had never seen Mine freak out like that. Her fear for her well-being was super high.
She had to say something.
"H-How...How are you feeling, Mine?" Sheele asked, "Y-You really scared me back there."
Mine looked like she was picking her words carefully as well.
"I'm fine," She was lying, "What do you guys want?"
Sheele motioned to Najenda, who was struggling to hide her own discomfort.
She often asked Sheele for help when situations like this occur. Her presence made Najenda feel a little more confident in these situations. She may be a great leader, but Najenda struggled as a counselor.
She cleared her throat.
"…So" Najenda began, "First of all, I…uh…I believe I should take some...responsibility for, uh...for what happened."
She readjusted her seat.
"I was...I was the one who decided to put you two...together," Najenda scratched the back of her head with her metal arm, "So...I would like to apologize for that, Mine."
Sheele silently sighed at Najenda's struggle. But so far, it seemed Mine was responding well.
"…Well," Mine spoke, "It's not you that I'm angry at, boss."
"Right, of course," Najenda awkwardly replied, "That's actually another cusp of why I...well, why I apologized to you just now."
She quickly darted her eyes to Sheele, who silently gave her a nod. She was still here to help her if need be.
Najenda refocused back to Mine.
"I...I wouldn't have put you two together had I...Had I known that he'd upset you like that, Mine."
Mine huffed.
"Well forget about that for a minute, is there anything going to be done about this?"
…
…
…
"...There is," Najenda said, "He's going to be punished appropriately, I assure you."
"Punished?" Mine asked, "I hope it has something to do with him getting kicked out of here!"
"…"
Both Najenda and Sheele grew uncomfortable.
Mine didn't like the silence.
"Well?!"
"…" Najenda remained silent, lightly tapping at Sheele's hip to get her attention.
Najenda gave her an uncomfortable look.
Sheele took control.
"Um...Mine."
Mine gave Sheele her attention.
"Actually...from what we've been told...you were-"
"Wait a minute," Mine interrupted, "Who told you what?"
"…"
"...Sheele," Mine repeated, "Who told you what?"
"Tatsumi told us his side of the story, Mine."
Najenda took over, knowing Mine wouldn't listen to Sheele in this state.
"From what he's said...I can understand why you got upset," Najenda rubbed her forehead with stress, "And I'm relieved you both were able to escape unnoticed, regardless of that refugee girl."
Mine stiffened up.
"What did he tell you?" she asked.
Sheele opted to answer.
"He, uh," she hesitated, "He...told us you ordered him to...take down two thugs. Apparently he thought you meant...take out."
Mine huffed again.
"At least the bastard's honest!" Mine retorted, "If you all know the story then you should know why he should be kicked out!"
"I'm afraid I'm won't be doing such a thing, Mine," Najenda interjected.
Mine's eyes widened.
"W-Wha..?"
"Mine, I understand your stance on him," Najenda clarified, "But I can assure you that this was a mistake, and I'm going to take care-"
"A mistake?!" Mine yelled.
They recoiled back.
"M-Mine, please calm down," Sheele begged.
"No, stop it Sheele," Mine denied, turning back to Najenda, "Boss, what do you mean 'a mistake'?! What kind of person mistakes beating someone up with killing them?!"
"The same way you've confused being an assassin with being a vigilante, Mine."
Mine flinched.
The boss was firm.
Her eyes were piercing.
And her words stabbed her right in her chest.
Sheele flinched as well, not expecting the outburst from the boss.
She saw Najenda quickly turn to her, knowing she might have went too far.
She quickly calmed herself down.
"Mine," Najenda continued, "I'm sorry. And I'm sorry for putting you two together, it was my decision to make and now I know it was the wrong one. It was never my intention to cause you this terrible amount of distress."
Najenda stood from her chair.
"But it seems I have to remind you once more about our role here in this war. We are not crime fighters, we are not vigilante's, and we are not heroes. I understand our targets have been the 'undesirables' of the Capital, but that doesn't mean you should confuse our actions with righteousness.
"We are assassins. That's all we are. Wherever you are, whatever you do, and what mission you have, you should be holding yourself as an assassin. We will win this war as assassins, and we will end this war as assassins. That means we do whatever it takes to get the job done. Whatever it takes to protect yourself. And whatever it takes to protect your identity.
"Even if it means killing a refuge child."
…
…
…
Mine didn't say a word. Her eyes masked behind her long, pink hair.
Sheele's concern grew. This conversation was intended to lead to this, but she didn't wish for her friend to be put down like this.
She looked to Najenda, who seemed to have relaxed her firm demeanor. Perhaps it also wasn't her intention to condemn the pink assassin as well.
She took a deep breath.
"...Look," Najenda retracted, "I know what your goal is. And your ambition to complete it is beyond admirable."
She began placing her chair back to Mine's desk.
"I have no doubt in my mind that you'll live through this war," Najenda's confidence was unshaken, "But our part in this war can only be done as assassins."
She approached the still Mine.
"And an as far as I've seen, you're still a great assassin, and by far the greatest marksman the Revolutionary Army has ever seen. Maybe even the entire Empire."
Najenda's placed her metal hand on Mine's shoulder.
"Please remember that. You will see you're goal come to be. But for now, you are an assassin."
Mine stood silent. It weighed on Sheele's heart, having never seen her friend in such a way.
Eventually, Mine would solemnly nodded.
She didn't utter a word.
Najenda release her shoulder.
"And just to remind you," she continued, "You're not taking the butt-end of this. I will be reprimanding Tatsumi as well."
She nodded towards Sheele and began walking towards the door.
"I too find it upsetting how anyone could confuse your order to such a degree."
She opened the door.
"And in public, no less."
And promptly left the room.
Sheele stared sorrowfully at her best friend. It was disturbing to see Mine so quiet. She was very emotional, yet Sheele couldn't believe that her feelings would have turned into this. She fully expected a heated argument with the boss, not this scary silence.
But no, no way will Mine let this get to her for long.
Mine is a very strong woman. Her pride won't allow her to stay in this state forever. She'll sort herself out...
Still, it won't hurt to remind her that she was there for her.
"Mine?"
"..."
Mine's head was still down.
Sheele forced a smile on her face regardless.
"Well...You already know that I'm here for you, if you ever want to talk."
"..."
Sheele refused to let her smile leave.
"Don't be a stranger, okay?"
She began walking towards the door, but her eyes were still on Mine.
"I'm going to make sure the boss is alright, let me know if-"
*BONK*
"Ow!"
Her head bumped into the door frame.
She sheepishly laughed as she rubbed the sore spot.
"J-Just let me know if you need anything."
She walked out and slowly closed the door.
Sheele's smile finally faltered.
She waited by the door, her hand still holding the doorknob.
She was still fearful. She only hoped Mine didn't notice. She never liked anyone pitying her.
But listening in through the door, Sheele heard nothing.
She sighed. Her eyes aimed at the ground.
She didn't want to leave her friend, but she knew there was nothing she could do right now.
If Mine needed anything, she knew she'll come to her.
Until then, Sheele reluctantly released the doorknob, and slowly walked away.
The stone hallways were very quiet. It brought Sheele to think of many things.
Mine, Najenda, the tribal assassin attack, the news from the newspaper, and Tatsumi.
His actions really caused an up-stir with the pink assassin. It seemed like her whole world crashed before her.
"Do you think I went to far?"
"Huh?" Sheele looked up.
Leaning against the stone wall in front of her was her boss, Najenda.
"This isn't the first time I've had to tell her this," she spoke, "I just didn't expect for her to shut down like that. What do you think?"
Sheele frowned.
"Well," she began, "I...I wish you'd considered her screaming further."
"...Yeah, you're right." Najenda pinched the bridge of her nose, "I have to work on that."
She dragged her hand down from her face.
"And what about you? I don't suppose you have an opinion on this?"
Sheele blinked in confusion. She already told her-
"I didn't know I caused her that much distress."
"Eh?!"
She whipped her head to the left.
Approaching from down the hall was Tatsumi.
'I didn't even notice him…'
Without the suit, Sheele would have mistaken him for the stone walls around her.
"I hope you weren't eavesdropping on us, Tatsumi," Najenda said.
"I only heard bits and pieces."
He once again turned to Sheele, who began to feel uncomfortable.
What was going through his mind?
What did he think of her?
But these questions were quick-lived as he returned his focus to Najenda.
"It wasn't my intention to cause her emotional distress."
"I know," Najenda pushed herself off the wall, "But from now on, be mindful of what you say to everyone else."
She approached him.
"They're not like you. They kill because they have goals that align with the victory of the Revolutionary Army."
She bent over to stare into him, face to face.
"They may be assassins, but that doesn't mean that's all they're capa-…"
Najenda shifted to Sheele, who's face had steeled from what she was about to say.
Awkwardly, she turned back to Tatsumi.
"It...doesn't mean they're cruel."
Sheele closed her eyes and sighed.
"You're going to be reprimanded for what you did, despite it being a misunderstanding. What that'll be...I'll have to decide."
"I understand," said Tatsumi, his voice not revealing anything to Sheele.
She'll just have to trust that he understands.
"...Okay then," Najenda continued, "Now that we've gotten this out of the way, I want you both to go to the meeting room. We have a new target to take care of."
"Huh?" Sheele was surprised, "I thought we had the day off, boss?"
"You do, Sheele," Najenda placed her hand on Tatsumi's shoulder, "Get over to the meeting room, I'll give you more details."
Tatsumi nodded and promptly began leaving for the meeting hall.
Sheele began making her way as well. But a firm hand on her shoulder stopped her from moving.
"Hang on Sheele."
Najenda looked ahead, making sure that Tatsumi was away from earshot.
Sheele faced her.
"What's wrong, boss?"
Najenda spoke firmly.
"I believe it would be best to make you Tatsumi's handler."
…
…
…
"...Eh?" Sheele was shocked, "Me?"
"Yes, you."
She was very confused.
"It's not difficult, Sheele," Najenda insisted, "You'll just be keeping tabs on him, make sure he doesn't do anything...too crazy, that's all."
"…"
Sheele didn't know what to say.
Najenda grasped both her shoulders.
"Come on now Sheele, you're perfect for this," she gently reassured, "You're a great trainer! And you're a good…...you're a good…um…Well you're...very nice and compassionate, you'll be fine!"
"..."
Disregarding Najenda's attempted words of encouragement, Sheele thought about it for a moment.
Spending time with Tatsumi would help her get to know him. There was something odd about him, something Sheele couldn't place a finger on. Maybe this could be a way for her to find out. She felt bothered by how distant he was. Maybe she could help him open up.
Plus...well, she doesn't really do much anyway. She can't cook. She can't clean. She can't really do much anything outside of assassinations.
She might as well give this a shot.
"A-Alright," Sheele said, "I'll do it."
"Perfect," Najenda slapped Sheele's shoulders, "I want you to tell me everything you can about him, especially about his memories, they're really important to me."
She began walking away.
"I suggest we head on down to the meeting room, we better get this job addressed."
"Yes, boss."
Sheele walked quietly next to Najenda down towards the meeting hall, her mind now running in loops for her new job.
Najenda seemed to have placed great importance on this, so she wondered why she picked her.
Sheele hoped she could deliver, and she hoped Tatsumi would respond well to it.
And most importantly, she hoped she could better understand Tatsumi.
He overestimated the levels of commitment from his fellow assassins.
That's not to say they're inefficient killers. If the tribal assassin attack was anything to go by, then they unquestionably have no qualms with killing.
But perhaps he should have assumed they were actually fighting solely for noble causes after all.
His first impressions by Najenda had given him the wrong interpretation of who Night Raid was, and who was a part of it.
He wondered if there was anyone else like him.
Akame was the closest one. But if her...behavior during breakfast was anything to go by, they're not completely similar.
It was really disappointing.
He felt his chest tighten up again. But scratching it removed the discomfort.
Tatsumi still intended to cooperate with his new team, and due to his time with Mine, he recognized his bias.
He didn't see Mine's emotional personality when he first met her. Yet in hindsight, the pride she showcased to everyone, as well as her heartfelt feelings for the West, should have given him this impression early on.
He will be removing this bias completely to ensure he could work better with the very interesting members of Night Raid.
Speaking of which.
Tatsumi stopped in his tracks, having almost reached the end of the dorm rooms.
Looking behind him, he couldn't help but notice a dorm-room door.
He allowed the quiet to linger as he stared at the wooden entrance, before he approached it.
He grabbed the doorknob, and opened the door.
"WOAH!"
*THUD*
"OW!"
Slamming to the ground was the very first Night Raid assassin Tatsumi met.
The blonde lioness, Leone.
It took a while for Tatsumi to notice her, she must have very good stealth skills.
She rubbed her throbbing forehead, and looked at Tatsumi sheepishly.
"Uh…Hey buddy."
"Leone," Tatsumi greeted, "Were you watching me?"
"What?! No!" Leone tried to look inconspicuous on the floor, "I just heard you outside my room is all."
An obvious lie.
She's been acting really odd since the Ogre and Gamal assassination. Tatsumi would have commented, but considering what Najenda had told him it's probably not advised.
Despite this, Tatsumi couldn't figure out how that mission could have bothered her, considering her sociopathic tendencies. Perhaps Leone's not used to seeing such a different method of assassination before. A proxy kill wasn't something you see everyday, let alone perform.
"Alright," Tatsumi merely replied. He's not one to be bothered by such behavior.
He returned to his walk.
"Hey, uh...Tatsumi?"
He stopped. She didn't use that nickname.
Tatsumi faced her.
"What uh…What're you doing?"
"I'm going to the meeting room."
"Oh really, that's cool."
"…"
Tatsumi was about to continue his walk.
"Why uh…" Tatsumi stopped again, "Why're you going to the meeting room?"
Tatsumi looked at her again.
"The boss has a mission for me to do."
"O-Oh really?" Leone was surprised, "I thought we had the day off today?"
"You do, this is for me."
"...Really?"
"Yes."
"Oh wow, that's...pretty cool."
"..."
Her discomfort had overwritten her personality.
Leone clearly wanted good relations, but Tatumi couldn't figure out what exactly was causing her behavior.
It was clearly something he did, so maybe allowing her to indulge in his affairs will put her at ease. It's for the best, considering they're going to work together. Discomfort usually results in a lack of focus.
"Do you want to come with me?" he offered.
"Huh?" Leone was caught off guard.
She finally stood up from the ground.
"Yeah, sure," she smiled, "Bet you wanted your big sis's company, huh Lil' bro?"
There was the nicknames again...
At least she was more comfortable.
Perhaps Leone would share her thoughts with him in time.
Nothing.
She couldn't sense anything from him.
Out of all of Night Raid, Leone's senses were the best.
Her nose is as powerful as a bloodhound.
Her sight is as sharp as an eagle.
Her speed and strength is as great as a danger beasts.
And her dexterity is as great as a cat.
But her most prided ability is her sixth sense.
Her instinct.
Regardless of target, Leone was capable of perceiving any known or unknown dangers that someone or something might pose.
Akame has this as well, but Leone firmly believes hers to be the best.
And it was all thanks to her Imperial Arm.
"The King of Beasts Transformation: Lionelle", a simple belt that when activated transforms it's user into a powerful beast. What comes from this is the heightening of her senses and an increase of her strength.
But despite her prideful abilities, it all fell to the ground when it was tested on the suited young man.
Tatsumi's presence was very miniscule. Almost nonexistent.
Leone wouldn't have noticed he was walking past her door had it not been for the stone slabs he walked across. Yet, it was very reminiscent of Akame, so this was something she's used to.
But the uncomfortable feeling still bothered her.
It was an odd because she couldn't pinpoint exactly what's making her feel this way.
She often would describe herself as emotionally intuned. She knows what pisses her off, and she knows what doesn't. What makes her happy, and what doesn't. What makes her sad, and so on.
Leone thought that staying around the young man would help her figure this out, but she wasn't getting jack-shit.
All she knew was that it started after their run in at Main Street.
That Imperial Officer's pure, unadulterated insanity still poked at Leone's brain. To know that someone that crazy exists, to point where the corruption of the Capital she "protected and loved" was invisible to her, never ceased to amaze her.
Only the Capital could breed such psychopathy.
But when she killed Ogre, the man who she supposedly worshiped like a symbol of justice, all after an inconspicuous conversation. That was the moment this discomfort arose from. And it made her notice things that she didn't see before.
Tatsumi was a breed of...something else.
There was something about him, the way he talked, or behaved, or something that made her feel..uneasy.
Leone felt bad for feeling this way. If Najenda gave him her endorsement, then surely Tatsumi was trustworthy. He didn't really seem that bad of a guy either, despite his flat personality. If anything, his shaggy hair and cowlick was odd. Seemed too unkempt for someone like him.
"Am I making you uncomfortable?"
Leone abruptly shifting to the young man.
"We're almost at the meeting hall," he said, "You haven't said anything since we left."
"Huh?"
She looked around her.
They were in the main hallway.
Just up ahead was the meeting room.
"O-Oh, sorry lil' bro," she awkwardly laughed, "I guess I got...lost in thought."
He only stared at her in response. The same empty expression he presented to the world chilled Leone's spine.
"You, uh…you like what you see?"
Tatsumi gazed for a couple of seconds longer.
Finally, he spoke.
"I was going to keep this to myself, but…"
Tatsumi looked like he was debating continuing, but made up his mind quickly.
"It seems like the way the last mission went is bothering you."
Leone grew wide eyed.
"I..uh…"
"If that's correct, then I would like to apologize."
…
…
…
"Huh?" Leone uttered, "W-Why are you apologizing, lil' bro?"
"I may have...came off to strongly."
He seemed to be quietly choosing his words.
"I didn't realize this until recently. It wasn't my intention to make you uncomfortable."
"...PFF-HAH!"
Leone's starting laughing.
"O-Oh no, dude!" Leone began to calm down, "Don't apologize, it's alright!"
She ruffled his hair.
"I guess I just never seen anyone do something like that before. It was really insane."
She released him.
"Plus you really scared me with that Imperial Office too."
He quickly fixed his hair, something Leone found very amusing.
Maybe she was overthinking this. Everything is always simple, especially emotionally. Tatsumi probably was only trying to impress them, that's all.
"Still," Leone continued, "That was the best con I've ever seen lil' bro! You gotta teach me how to do that!"
"…"
Leone began laughing.
"Actually, I don't think I'm patient enough to attempt something like that."
"There's also a bit of a skill issue there, Leone."
She stopped laughing. The voice did not come from Tatsumi.
Turning around, she saw the source.
A green haired assassin walking into the meeting room.
"Oh hey, perv," she smirked, "What's wrong, couldn't catch peak of me in my room?"
Lubbock smirked back.
"You were too busy with the newbie to do anything interesting in your room."
…
…
…
*WHOOSH*
Leone morphed into her Lionel form.
"Kidding! KIDDING! I'M KIDDING!" Lubbock raised his hands, "I saw you and him walking together so I followed. Heard something about a new mission, I was curious!"
Lubbock smiled fearfully at Leone's fierce face.
*WHIISH*
She reverted the form.
"I would have really pounded you, dude," Leone sighed, "And not the way you're thinking of."
"Yeah I know," Lubbock laughed, "You've made that clear many times."
"And you don't learn."
"Well what can I say, I'm a sucker for beauty."
Leone raised a brow.
"Is that your new line, Romeo?"
"You think it'll work?"
Leone laughed.
"Not even in your dreams."
"...Damn," Lubbock scratched the back of his head, "Well I'll figure out something, she's gotta already know how I feel for her anyway, right?"
"If you stop your pervy shit then maybe you'll have a chance."
"...I'm sure there's another way."
"Pfft, yeah good luck then." Leone released, "And if you try to catch a peak of me during my bath again, I'll make sure to punch harder than before."
"I'll make sure you won't notice a thing then."
Leone rolled her eyes at Lubbock's cheeky smile.
"Anyway," Lubbock looked to the suited young man, "You're really silent. It's hard get a read on you."
"…"
Lubbock raised his eyebrow.
"I hope you know how unusual your position is. Najenda never allows anyone to do a mission by themselves."
"Is that so?" Tatsumi spoke.
"Well yeah," Leone chimmed in, "We've always done missions as a team. It's the only way to get the job done. Well, at least it was."
She shifted to Lubbock.
"But I'm telling you dude," Leone placed her hands on Tatsumi's shoulders, "If anyone could get it done-"
She slammed his shoulders twice.
"-it's this boy right here."
"So I've heard," Lubbock replied, "Do we know what the mission is?"
"I was going to be told at the meeting hall," Tatsumi rubbed his aching left shoulder, "And it seems it's going to start soon."
Lubbock raised his eyebrow, but the sounds of two sets of footsteps interrupted his confusion.
Entering the room was Najenda and Sheele.
Najenda saw Lubbock and Leone, and instinctively pinched the bridge of her nose.
Sheele smiled with slight pity, knowing the trouble the two sometimes bring.
"Woah, hi boss!" Leone greeted, "Hey Sheele~"
"Hi Leone," Sheele giggled, "Nice to see you."
Leone's smile grew a bit more.
"Hey boss, Sheele," Lubbock greeted, "I heard about this mission you were gonna give to Tatsumi, thought I take a listen."
"Yeah me too," Leone pointed at Tatsumi, "He told be by the way, I didn't eavesdrop like Lubbock."
Najenda's eyebrow shifted. She looked at Lubbock.
"W-wha? Oh give me a break Leone!"
Leone laughed.
Najenda took a deep breath.
"...Well, I wish this could have been done in private, I should have made that more clear."
Najenda walked towards the meeting room.
"If you both wish to join, then by all means."
Sheele approached Tatsumi, and the four members of Night Raid walked to the meeting room with Najenda.
But Leone couldn't help but take another glance at Tatsumi.
The discomfort slowly returned. But she shook her head before it could develop further. She wasn't going to let this get in the way of being around him.
He was pretty funny to mess with. Plus he seems okay with being told what to do. Maybe she'll get him to do stuff for her. That'll be cool.
Leone seems to be doing well again. Her discomfort from before appears to have practically vanished, which would've been normal had it not been for the inciting incident.
Perhaps Tatsumi spoke to her to put her at ease. Najenda won't bother to ask what he said, but if her hunch is correct, it wasn't out of sympathy.
He likely wanted her to be at ease to ensure she'll be an efficient ally. It seems like something Tatsumi's personality would lean on.
But that's assuming that her hunch about him is correct.
Prior to Mine's incident, Najenda had time to think.
The shock of how Tatsumi handled the Ogre and Gamal mission still ran through her mind.
In all of her life as a soldier, general, assassin, and tactician, she had never seen that level of manupulation before. It occupied her mind for quite some time, but once she was able to force it out, she began to see some pieces come together.
Pieces regarding Tatsumi's identity.
His personality matched something she heard about, long ago. But Najenda was not one to make immediate connections. Akame matched this personality type it as well, but her past is already known and proven.
The only thing that's known about Tatsumi was two things.
He hails from Romania, an isolated area found in the Southern Country.
And Tatsumi, his name, wasn't his birth name. It was given to him by Diana.
His real name, if you'd even call it a name, is what initially got Najenda interested in him.
She might have a possible theory to his past. And if she's right, her threat to his life would be justified.
"Um...boss?"
"Hm?" Najenda was brought back from her thinking.
In front of her was the four members of Night Raid, waiting for her to speak.
She was sitting in her meeting room chair, and felt the quizzical quiet in the room.
"She's just thinking again, Leone," Lubbock said, "Everything alright, Boss?"
"...Yes, I'm...alright," Najenda spoke, tapping her head with her metal finger, "I wanted to make sure I've thought of everything I needed for this."
Everyone seemed to understand.
She leaned forward, taking another glance at Tatsumi and Sheele.
"I was going to save this mission for tomorrow," she refocused back to the entire room, "But the new information I've received has made this the perfect opportunity to give Tatsumi one final test. A test that will confirm, without a shadow of a doubt, the fullest extent of his abilities.
"You will be killing multiple targets, one of them being an extended member of the government. Death will be a mercy if you fail, Tatsumi."
The boy's empty eyes grew strong and sharp, piercing the air around them. He seems to have taken this well.
But the others in the room grew nervous.
Sheele looked at Tatsumi with worry, leaving Leone and Lubbock to lock eyes with Najenda in disbelief.
They wanted to know the mission, and Najenda obliged them.
Your target is the distant relative of Prime Minister honest, Iokal.
Despite the minuscule blood-relation between the two, that relation allows him to reap the pleasures of corrupted power. These pleasures include the amnesty to kidnap and beat innocent women to death. These women often don't survive the beatings, and the ones that do are taken out by his body guards.
These five bodyguards will also be your targets. They're all hired by Iokal and have been selectively picked out from the Imperial Fist Temple to protect–
"Woah-woah-woah-WOAH! Wait a minute!"
Najenda abruptly stopped her debrief.
"Five Imperial Fist bodyguards? By himself?!" Lubbock exclaimed, "A-Are you trying to get him killed?!"
Najenda glared at him.
"Lubbock, I don't appreciate being interrupted."
"I-I have to agree too, boss," Najenda looked at Sheele, "I mean...the other missions were different; this might be too much for him."
"Yeah boss, I mean look at him," Leone lifted and began shaking Tatsumi's arms, "He's strong, but not that strong. He can't take down five bodyguards from the Imperial Fist."
"I believe this shouldn't be a problem."
Tatsumi released himself from Leone.
"Is there something I should know about these Imperial Fist bodyguards?"
Everyone but Najenda looked at him in surprise.
"You don't know about them?" Sheele questioned.
"I've heard about them from others, but nothing to get a big picture. At least, nothing I can remember prior."
Sheele was reminded of his missing memories.
"Well," Najenda interjected, "They're going to be some pretty tough targets, Tatsumi."
The bodyguards are all practitioners of the Imperial Fist style, one of the most common and dangerous forms of martial arts in the Capital. The Imperial Fist temple, due to the corruption of the Empire, has trickled down to them. Many dangerous people have managed to learn and master this style because of this. Even grunts could pose a threat to the average Imperial soldier.
Four of the bodyguards are grunts, but one of them isn't.
Shihandai is his name. He was a former instructor at the Imperial Temple He was kicked out of the temple for killing three students during a class session. He's has vicious and sadistic as the man he works for.
He's going to be your main problem, but don't expect the other bodyguards to be easy targets. You're going to have to give it your all for this mission Tatsumi.
However, despite this being solo, I will not be allowing you to leave without backup.
"Backup?" Tatsumi asked.
"Yes, backup," Najenda smiled, "If you are going to be a Night Raid assassin, you'll need to learn to work with others, even if its minimal."
She stood up.
"With your skills, you won't be needing a large group, so I'm having Sheele monitor you."
Leone and Lubbock blinked with confusion.
They looked to Sheele, who nodded to Najenda in understanding.
"She'll be your backup. She's a highly skilled killer and a dependable assassin, she'll be able to help you however she can. I only ask that you do request her assistance if need be."
"Can I go too?"
Najenda blinked, turning to Leone.
"Excuse me?"
"Can I go too, boss?"
No.
No way.
Not after that initiation mission.
She went to voice her rejection.
"I'm afraid that's-"
"I'd like to go as well."
Najenda stumbled over her words, now looking a Lubbock.
"You too?"
"Well yeah," he confirmed, "I've heard stories of his 'initiation', so I wanted to see him in action myself."
He relaxed the back of his head against his hands.
"And...well, now that I know about this, I guess it wouldn't feel right to let the newbie go on his own. Skilled or not."
Najenda's apprehension relaxed with Lubbock's smile.
But Leone began to snicker.
"I bet it's because you don't want Tatsumi to get all the attention."
Lubbock's smile quickly shifted.
"It's not."
"It is!"
Leone walked over the Tatsumi.
"It's not!" Lubbock insisted.
"You sure?"
She generously hugged Tatsumi from behind, his head smothered between her large chest.
"W-Wha?!" Lubbock blushed in shock.
"HAH!" Leone laughed, "It totally is!"
"K-Knock it off!"
Lubbock moved closer to Leone.
"Knock off what?" she rested her head on Tatsumi's.
"That!"
"That what?"
"That!"
"Does it bother you?"
"N-No...It doesn't!"
"Okay!"
"But stop anyway!"
"Nope~ he's kinda cute."
"He's a cardboard box!"
"Why do you care?!"
"U-Uh, guys."
They both looked at Sheele.
"You're, um...smothering him."
They paused a bit before looking at each other, finally noticing how closed they moved to one another.
Then they looked down, seeing that they both were sandwiching the suited newbie assassin.
They released him, leaving Lubbock to awkwardly laugh.
Leone casually freed Tatsumi from her grasp, causing the boy to quickly move away from her to fix his suit.
Sheele found it slightly amusing.
"I'm going to stop letting you grab me, Leone." Tatsumi said.
Leone laughed some more. She definitely didn't take what he said seriously.
Najenda pinched the bridge of her nose again. She felt like nobody was taking this meeting seriously anymore.
However, returning back to Leone, perhaps she was too quick to decide.
She did seem keen to obverse the boy before, regardless if her discomfort was present or not. Tagging along could help her sort that out, and Najenda didn't think it right to deprive her of that goal.
Plus, if Lubbock were to go, he'll keep tabs on her. There's no denying the young man's loyalty.
"Alright then," Najenda said, "I'll allow you two to go if you wish, but only as backup. This mission is still on Tatsumi to complete."
"Hell yeah! Let's do this!" Leone cheered.
She high-fived Lubbock.
He smiled at her enthusiasm, before shifting the smile to Najenda.
Najenda couldn't help but return it back in resignation. It seems the behavior of her assassins were outside of her control. Especially if they're as eccentric as them.
She dug into her pocket for a cigarette.
"The mission takes place tonight," she placed it in her mouth and lit it with her metal arm, "You'll find Iokal at his mansion in the East Side Forest of the Capital. Be mindful of the Imperial guards too, they'll be plenty of them."
She inhaled slowly and exhaled the smoke.
"Get your affairs in order and do your best. I'm counting on you guys."
"I'll get it done," Tatsumi replied.
"I got his back, boss," Sheele assured.
"We're expecting some awesome stuff, Tatsumi!" Leone encouraged.
"Yeah we are," Lubbock agreed, "After Leone's stories, I hope you won't disappoint."
"Oh dude, you have no idea!"
Leone kept on the story of the initiation as she and Lubbock, along with Tatsumi and Sheele, left the room.
Blowing out the smoke, Najenda was left with her thoughts once more.
Perhaps it really was a good decision to have Leone and Lubbock tag along, considering Sheele's...unusual tendencies.
But then again, she did make a fine trainer, so long as she didn't actually do or touch anything.
This mission will bring her great insight on Sheele's effectiveness with handling Tatsumi. He listens well, but without an anchor he might go off the rails.
Speaking of which, Najenda certainly hopes his memories return.
She sometimes forgets about the boy's amnesia. It certainly doesn't seem to affect him much. He's taking this far too well.
If she didn't know any better, she'd assume he was faking it. The thought did cross her mind at first, yet this hunch of hers...depending on the debrief from Sheele, Najenda will make a conclusion.
Not "the" conclusion, but "a" conclusion.
Especially about Romania. She's heard some stories about that area, many of which leave much to the imagination. But one has always been kept at the back of her mind.
But Najenda stopped herself from further ruminating. This mission takes precedence, and the success of it will do more than push them forward through this war.
It will effectively change the way Night Raid approaches high-profile targets all together.
If Sheele successfully anchors Tatsumi, Night Raid's victory would almost be assured.
And maybe, given time...he may be able to take out...her…
She's been away from the Capital for quite some time, and Najenda's spies are telling her that she's due to return very soon.
Najenda will see in time, but for now, Tatsumi has his work cut out for him.
A sadistic relative of Prime Minister Honest.
Five warriors of the Imperial Fist.
And a whole mansion of staff and Imperial Guards.
To be caught by anyone will brand him for the rest of his life by the Empire.
This mission is nothing but impossible to complete alone.
But I think he knows this.
And from what I've seen, he certainly loves the challenge.
I cannot wait to see how he'll deliver.
East Side Forest
11:43 PM
Since his arrival, Lubbock couldn't help but notice the special attention Tatsumi was receiving from Najenda.
He'd be lying if he didn't admit he was jealousy.
His feelings for the boss were well known to Leone, but for the life of him he just couldn't move past a smile from the beautiful woman.
He sighed. Lubbock was hopelessly in love with a woman that has no such feelings for him. Oh well…
Still, to have Najenda's complete confidence to do a mission on his own was commendable. She's never made such a huge risk unless she was one-hundred and fifty percent certain it would be to Night Raid's favor.
And Lubbock will do anything for her but doubt her.
However, placing his feelings aside, he thought about the mission, as well as the young man that will be completing it.
He looked at the suited young man, walking past the trees and climbing over roots alongside Sheele, who was attempting to converse with him to no avail.
Lubbock couldn't help but focus on the suit.
It was such an odd thing to wear for an assassination. Sure there wasn't a dress code for such a thing, but a suit? It's not exactly unassuming. In fact, without the suit, Tatsumi would look one-hundred percent unassuming. He's very strange.
But he supposed he wasn't one to judge. Lubbock often wore his casual clothing to missions. And Sheele wore that revealing cheongsam most of the time. And there was a blonde woman right next to him that wore the most scantily clad outfit out of all of Night Raid.
Speaking of which, Leone's been unnaturally quiet.
Looking at the young woman, he saw her discomforted face.
"Leone?" his called snapped her out of her state, "You okay?"
"O-Oh yeah, I'm cool," she scratched the back of her head, "Just...thinking."
Lubbock would have made a joke here in any other context. But from who she was looking at, it was obvious what was bothered her.
"Something about him?"
"Huh?"
That got her complete attention.
"Oh, well…" she scratched her cheek, "Do you...fell anything around him?"
Lubbock raised an eyebrow.
"...Not particularly," he answered, "Now that you mention it, he does give the same vibes as Akame."
"Yeah, I know…" Leone shook her head, "It's fine, I'm fine. It's kinda stupid anyway."
"Okay?" Lubbock pondered, "You uncomfortable around him?"
"What? Oh no-no-no, not at all," Leone said, "He's a cool guy...He's kinda bland though."
Lubbock smiled.
"Yeah," he said, "I think he'd give Akame a run for her money."
"Pfft," Leone held in her laughter, "Yeah, no doubt about that!"
He was relieved to see her perk up again.
"Hey guys!"
They both turned to Sheele.
"I can see the mansion up ahead!"
Everyone gazed at the bright lights shining up in the night sky.
The mansion was enormous, laying within thick trees and vines, free from dirt and grime. Only someone related to Prime Minster Honest could feasibly live in such luxury.
Without even knowing prior, he knew this mansion was bigger than that "initiation mission" Tatsumi did before. Lubbock hopped the young man would showcase exactly what made Najenda so fascinated by him. And he hoped the stories Leone told him held up.
Turning to the lioness, her excitement for what was to come having completely clouded whatever happened moments before.
"We're here," Lubbock heard Tatsumi announce.
Stopping a generous distance away from the property, he could see the large walls that surrounded the properly. Whatever was past those walls would definitely pose some trouble for the young man, never mind inside the mansion.
Could Tatsumi really do something like this alone? How could anyone be this confident and stealthy to perform a missions like this?
"This seems like a good vantage point, right Lubbock?"
Lubbock turned to Leone, who smiled in anticipation.
Looking around, he could confirm the spot was good enough. He could see a couple of windows showcasing some of the floors above, but the lower floors past the main floor were a mystery.
"Yeah, should be fine," he confirmed, "Wish we could see behind those walls though."
"Yeah," Sheele agreed, turning to them once more, "If you guys don't mind, I'd like to walk with Tatsumi for the rest of the way, alone."
"Oh?" Lubbock raised his eyebrow.
"Just until we've reached the edge of the property," Sheele clarified, "I'll be back once he starts."
Lubbock and Leone looked at each other before shrugging. It's very hard to say no to Sheele.
"Well alright, if you need it," Lubbock said, seeing Sheele smile.
He looked to Tatsumi.
"Good luck man, make sure you don't get yourself killed."
"Yeah!" Leone cheered, "And drown one of those bodyguards in a toilet for me!"
"I-I don't think we need to push him that far," Sheele insisted, causing Leone to slightly falter.
"Alright, fine," she relented, "But still, this is going to be good!"
Leone gave Tatsumi a thumbs up.
"Go get 'em, tiger~!"
Tatsumi nodded.
With a silent turn, Sheele and Tatsumi began moving closer to the mansion, until they disappeared deep in the forest.
Lubbock would be lying if he said he wasn't as excited as Leone. She has a way of making outlandish stories, so he could only hope they were true.
"Let's see what you got, killer."
They waited patiently for Sheele to come back.
She didn't know how to start the conversation, nor how to make the silence less awkward.
Her prior attempts didn't work so well, and when Sheele did get him to speak, he only gave small, short answers.
Tatsumi was a very unapproachable...if she were to disregard Leone's complete obliviousness to it.
But still, she did care for him. He seemed very isolated from everyone and she never liked seeing anyone act like this.
As a member of Night Raid, she will do her best to help him however she can.
She looked down to Tatsumi's side, spotting a pistol hidden almost out of sight in his waist.
From what Bulat said, the gunfire was abnormally silent. She wanted to ask further, but he seemed too uncomfortable to continue.
It seems a lot of people were beginning to feel this way about Tatsumi. It's hard for her not to see why, but it didn't feel right to chalk it all up on first impressions alone.
Still, Sheele would be lying if she said she wasn't uncomfortable around the young man as well. What happened to Mine heightened this feeling.
She wanted to talk to him about this, and hopefully help him understand. She doesn't want him to get into the bad light of anyone else, not like Mine.
She took a deep breath and called for Tatsumi's attention.
"Uh-"
*THUD*
She felt something snag her ankle.
"Wha-OOOF!"
She slammed onto the ground.
"...Ouch."
The second pair of footsteps ceased.
Sheele looked behind her, removing the root that caught her ankle.
She motioned to get up, but stopped when a hand opened for her.
Looking up revealed Tatsumi still face.
Sheele smiled, grabbing the hand.
"Thank you," she was lifted up, "I hope I'm not being too much trouble."
Patting the dirt off her dress, she continued walking forward.
She drew closer to the mansion, but stopped when she didn't hear the second pair of footsteps begin again.
"Tatsumi?" Sheele called, "Is everything alright?"
Tatsumi looked at her with a slightly opened mouth.
"You're...clumsy for an assassin, aren't you?"
Sheele's eyes widened, but a sad smile creeped in shortly after.
"Y-Yeah...I am, sorry."
"Don't be," Tatsumi said, "It's just...something I didn't think I would see in an assassin. But I'd imagine you wouldn't be here if you couldn't pull your weight."
"Yeah, I suppose," Sheele sighed, but forced a smile soon after, "I guess I'm lucky to be a good killer then, otherwise I'd be pretty useless, huh?"
She tried to laughed at her own expense, but Tatsumi predictably did not engage.
She stopped her laughing.
"W-Well," Sheele retracted, "I...uh...I-I can't imagine how much pressure you probably in right now."
"What do you mean?"
Sheele's composure came back to her.
"Um...I mean the mission," she clarified, "It's a lot for one person to handle, even if your initiation was similar. I can't imagine the stress."
"You don't need to worry about me," Tatsumi declared, "This is very natural to me."
…
…
…
Natural to him?
"Really?" Sheele asked.
"Yes, I'll be fine."
Tatsumi began walking ahead. His shoulders were straight and his head was tall.
"I don't understand you, Tatsumi."
He stopped walking.
"I-I mean I don't want to hurt your feelings or anything, but...I want to get to know you, but…"
He fully turned around to face Sheele.
"...You've been so...closed from...well, everything really."
Sheele looked at him straight in the eyes.
"You didn't react to Mine's insults, Bulat's advance, Lubbock's attempt at friendliness, and Leone's...clinginess. Even Akame would have reacted in some way. And...It seems like you've haven't really...reciprocated it in any way.
"N-Not to say that you should get back at them or anything but...I was surprised that you didn't really...react. Like, in a way that I could better get a gauge of who you are. Maybe it's those missing memories of yours, but even with that...well, you don't seem to be bothered by their absense. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you've...well, please don't get the wrong idea...but I feel like you could be making that up completely.
"You're a...very cold person, Tatsumi. I know we're killers, but...perhaps there is some place for a little bit of empathy. Don't you think? I mean...I've never seen Mine freak out like that...and I've never seen Leone so uncomfortable, and Akame so cautious. It bothers me, and I want to help you...but…"
Sheele clasped her hands together, took a deep breath, and revealed her final worry.
"I don't know why you're here, Tatsumi," she said, "I don't see what could have possible led you to want to join Night Raid."
"…"
Tatsumi stared at her with those same empty eyes. Eyes that don't reveal any intention, truth, or lie.
"I was recommended," he defaulted, "By Dian-"
"N-No, no, I'm sorry," Sheele interrupted, "I-I know you were recommended, but that's not what I'm asking."
"…"
Tatsumi spoke again.
"My skills are good for this kind of work, and I thought it would be of use-"
"That's not what I'm asking either, Tatsumi."
"..."
Sheele softly grasped both of his shoulders, looking into his empty eyes.
"I want to you why YOU joined Night Raid. I want to know why YOU wanted to be here with us."
Her face grew softer.
"Why did you join us, Tatsumi? Why did you want to fight in this war with us?"
"…"
…
…
…
For the first time since she's known him, within the small span of time they've had the chance to interact, Tatsumi's looked to be filled with a feeling Sheele felt was foreign to him.
Discomfort.
He looked down to the ground with his forehead creased and mouth slightly gaped.
He must be thinking, but furthering this began to make his eyebrows scrunch, and his eyes blinked in chains of three.
He began to sweat, causing Sheele distress.
"T-Tatsumi?!" she squeezed shoulders slightly harder, "A-Are you alright?!"
"…"
Sheele grew anxious. She didn't expect him to react this way. She probably should have waited until after the mission...WAIT!
She forgot about the mission!
He's going in alone!
She released her grasp on Tatsumi, covering her mouth in horror.
"N-No, I'm...I'm so sorry!"
Damn it! What was she thinking!
"Oh no! I-I didn't mean to make you feel this way!"
She crouched onto the ground
"Oh no-no-no!"
She was so stupid! This was totally going to psyche him out! God! What was she thinking!?
Why didn't she tell him this after the mission!? Damn it! What a stupid airheaded idiot she was! When will she learn!
"It's alright, Sheele."
…
…
…
Sheele looked up once again.
"I can handle myself, you don't need to worry."
"…" She wasn't convinced, "A-Are you sure?"
Tatsumi did not response, his now sharp eyes and straight posture was the answer she needed.
Sheele took a deep breath.
"Well...Alright then."
She stood up but hung her head. She felt like a real airhead. She needed to really think more before opening her mouth. This was so typical of her. If Tatsumi get's hurt, it was going to be her fault.
Why couldn't she do anything right?
"I think we should move on now," Tatsumi said "We've been delaying this mission for too long."
...He was right. Sheele silenced the negative voices in her head.
"...Okay," she agreed, "If you believe you're ready, then I won't stop you."
Tatusmi nodded, taking the lead for Sheele.
The rest of their short trek was silent. They skipped past the pathways to the mansion to stay hidden within the trees, making it to the side of the mansion wall.
Still hidden, Sheele gave Tatsumi her finals words.
"Tatsumi," she began, "If...If it's possible for you..."
She saw him slight turn her head to her.
"If it's possible for you, I think everyone, including Leone, would rather you not involve anyone that doesn't deserve it. Especially the women."
"…"
Sheele saw Tatsumi turn to her fully. She continued.
"I-I mean, after what happened with Mine, I think it would help with...you know...making everyone a little more...sociably around you...you know?"
She wished she could have worded that better.
"...I'll try."
Sheele's eyes widened.
"Really?"
"...Yeah...It'll limit what I can do...but I could try."
Sheele's smile couldn't be bigger.
"Thank you Tatsumi, that means a lot to me."
He merely looked down, and turned back to the mansion.
"Alright," Sheele said, "And please remember that we're here as backup. Just give us a sign, and we'll be there."
"…Alright."
He began walking down.
"Tatsumi!"
He looked back to Sheele.
"Good luck, and be careful!"
Tatsumi nodded and continued on.
She watched Tatsumi carefully maneuver through the roots and trunks of the forest, mindful of not stepping on any leaves and twigs. Eventually he disappearing into the "hot zone".
There was no going back for him now.
Sheele began trekking back to Leone and Lubbock, hoping to get a better view of Tatsumi's progress.
She features grew sharper, and her focus was increased.
The mission has officially started.
Iokals Mansion – Outside the Walls
Tatsumi hid in the bushes.
He was at the edge of the property, facing the large entrance to the mansion.
As expected, Imperial Guards had taken post.
There were only three of them, two by each respective side of the entrance, and one in the middle of the staircase. Their distance from one another made it impossible to attack them all silently. And despite having two pistols, his aim was best when using one, and he required a medium distance for his aim to be true.
The entrance wasn't possible for him to use, he'd have to find another way inside.
He moved through the foliage of trees and tall grass to reach the right side of the mansion.
More guards were posted. Four in total.
It looks like Iokal didn't squander on security. Typical with people of power. This means it's going to be very difficult for Tatsumi to enter the mansion.
Difficult, but not impossible.
He inspected the smooth, unscalable concrete wall. There was always a mistake to be found, and Tatsumi was very good at taking advantage of them.
Looking at the very bottom of the wall, he could see the plants beginning to converge within the cracks of the concrete.
Some sections of the wall had taller growths than others, and he from the top, he saw vines beginning to droop over and converge with the walls as well.
If there were vines present, then there might me an overgrowth somewhere.
Tatsumi moved through the trees and shrubs, making his way to the back of the mansion.
On the large wall, an overgrowth of vines was plastered down the center.
They were thick enough to climb, and long enough to take him inside the mansion property.
Unfortunately, the four Imperial Guards surrounding the area were going to make things very difficult.
Killing them wouldn't be successful. They were far too apart, and missing one target will alert the others. He can't risk revealing his presence.
He will need to bypass the guards. Analyzing any patterns will hopefully give him something to use.
The first guard was located at the far left, leaning again the wall he's supposed to guard. He seemed to be daydreaming, swinging his arms out of boredom and looking out to the forest to the left. He was young, which explained the behavior. He won't be a big concern.
The second guard might be a concern, however. She was located in the second quarter of the wall, but more centered between the wall and the forest Tatsumi hid in. She looked disciplined and highly alert, indicated by the way she moved around her post area.
However, after a couple of seconds of walking, she noticed the first guard.
She sigh in frustration and quickly approached the young man.
"Hey!" the first guard jolted off the wall, "I keep telling you to stop dozing off, this is the third time now!"
"H-Hey come on, give me a break," the first guard said, "Nothing ever goes on here, what's the big deal?"
"The big deal is that I'm not going to waste my life being some distant relative's body guard when I could be fighting in the war! I don't want your attitude to reflect on my performance!"
"Okay, okay, geez, I'll get back to it then."
"I still see you against the wall, you little ingrate."
He nonchalantly walked away from the wall, staring at her unenthused.
"Ugh," the second guard began walking back to her post, trying to calm herself down.
However, once the second guard returned to her post, he went straight back to the wall to return to his daydreaming.
It was an interesting interaction.
Moving on, he saw the third guard located around the third quarter of the wall. He was far away form the other two guards, often walking close to the forest.
His path was predictable, resembling a square and never straying away from it. When he was the closest to the forest, he he could practically touch the bushes and trees.
That might be good to know.
He looked at the final guard, at the last corner of the wall.
He was alert like the second and third guard, as at times he monitors the whole area. However, every so often, he will disappear around the corner for quite some time, before returning back.
Having this information in mind, Tatsumi hatched a plan.
The third guard, when he's close to the forest, could be lured in with a distraction. A thrown stone would effectively take him away from the area, but not for long.
The second guard will need to be lured away from Tatsumi's direction. Looking around her general area, he found nothing he could use. But looking above her, he found a tree bearing large pinecones.
They hung roughly above her, and towards the direction of the slacking first guard. However, the tree was too high, but looking down to his feet, he saw the same pinecone from the tree.
He grabbed it, as well as a large stone.
His plan was in motion.
He will wait for the fourth guard to leave his post.
He'll throw the pinecone towards the second guard.
The second guard will go to the first guard.
Tatsumi will throw the stone into the forest.
And the third guard will walk into it.
He will have a small window of time, but Tatsumi's confident he'll be able to scale up the wall by then.
Tatsumi focused on the fourth guard, who had just re-entered the area.
The guard shuffled a bit in his post, looking at all the three other guards in the area.
The first guard was still dozing off.
The second guard was on high alert.
The third guard relentlessly walked his square.
Tatsumi held the pinecone and the stone in each hand.
The fourth guard slumped his shouldered slightly. There was still nothing here.
And then, he turned around.
Tatsumi threw the pinecone high in the air towards the second guard.
*DOB-dob*
"Hm?"
The second guard looked to her left, as the fourth guard disappeared behind the corner.
The third guard was getting close to the forest as the second guard picked up the pinecone.
She looked around for a source. Eventually, her eyes laid on the first guard.
In a huff, she stormed over just as the third guard closed in to the forest side.
Tatsumi threw the stone.
*THUD-thud-thud*
"Huh?"
The third guard stopped and faced the forest. He peered into it, before entering.
Tatsumi rushed out of the bushes.
The third guard was successfully evaded. But he had little time.
Almost halfway to the wall, the second guard yelled at the first.
"HEY!"
The first guard jumped up.
"YOU STUPID BASTARD!" the second guard scolded, "ARE YOU TESTING ME?!"
Tatsumi reached the vines and began climbing.
He still heard the bickering of the first and second guard. He still had time.
He tried to climb faster, turning to see where the third guard was.
His eyes widened. The third guard was already heading back.
Tatsumi continued climbing.
He didn't anticipate the guard to be that fast. He could have sworn he threw the stone far.
Damn it.
Tatsumi did his best to pick up the pace.
He was already past the halfway point, trying to reach the top.
But when he turned around, he saw the third guard shuffle out of the forest.
It felt like things slowed down when the guard finally entered the clear grass area.
Tatsumi was out in the open.
There was nothing he could do to hide.
He didn't have a choice.
Grabbing his gun, he tried to take aim towards the guard. It was too far, but if he maintained his focus then maybe-
*CRASH-CRASH-THUD-thud*
"WOAH!" the third guard turned back around towards the forest.
Tatsumi suddenly saw dirt rising from the trees.
"What the hell was that?!" the second guard yelled out.
It was something Tatsumi wanted to know as well.
Around the corner, the fourth guard ran towards the third. With the second and first soon to follow.
They were all facing away from him. Tatsumi took advantage.
He continued his climb up the wall.
"Holy crap," the third guard released, "It's a large boulder."
"Must have fallen off a hill or something," the fourth guard thought.
Tatsumi was a quarter of the way to the top.
"That scared the crap out of me!" the first guard said.
"Yeah...At least it wasn't anything serious," the second guard said.
Tatsumi reached over the ledge.
"Let's get back to our posts."
"Alright."
"Yeah."
"On it."
They all turned around and saw the same vine-filled wall from before. Typical and unchanged.
From the very top of the wall, Tatsumi saw the large boulder that had crashed into the forest below.
It was strange, it was a fairly big boulder, one that he would have noticed on his way to the mansion. There wasn't a hill anywhere that could have dropped that.
His eyes scaled up the hill it supposedly came from.
Reaching the top of it, he blinked twice.
He found the source.
On top the hill was a bouncing Leone, doing her best to grab his attention. It indeed worked.
Beside her was a waving Sheele, more subtle in her attention grabbing. And beside her was a prone Lubbock, giving Tatsumi a thumbs up while holding a pair of binoculars.
"...Hm."
Najenda might have been right about the need for teamwork. Tatsumi waved back to them.
It seemed to have made Leone's jumping intensify. And it made Sheele wave back with both hands this time.
Tatsumi couldn't help but stare at her.
"Why did you join us, Tatsumi? Why did you want to fight in this war with us?"
…
…
…
He quickly shook the question from his head.
He didn't know what this feeling was, but he'll sort that out at another time.
Now that he was on top of the wall, the mission will truly start.
He's truly on his own now.
The vines scaled over the wall, providing a way for Tatsumi to climb down.
Quickly, his sight on the others was removed.
"Aaaaand he's inside!" Leone cheered.
"Yeah, but man, that was a close one," Lubbock released his binoculars, "That dude almost gave me a heart attack. He's quite the risk taker."
"Y-Yeah," Sheele released, wiping off her sweat, "That was really good thinking, Leone!"
Lubbock turned to the lioness.
"Yeah, I gotta say, I wouldn't have expected that from you," he said, "That was pretty smart."
Leone smiled widely.
"Heh~ Maybe I'm learning a bit from him!"
Sheele giggled.
"Maybe," she said.
She looked at the mansion. Her humor slowly dying out.
"Still...I hope he doesn't do anything reckless in there."
"Yeah, tell me about it," Lubbock put on the binoculars again, "And I hope he asks for help, shouldn't be a problem for us to get in."
"Yeah, definitely!" Leone flexed her right bicep, "And how about you lend me the binoculars now? I wanna see what he'll do next."
"You should have brought your own then," Lubbock said, "But it doesn't matter right now anyway, I can't see him past that wall. We'll have to wait."
Leone moaned in annoyance.
"Well tell me when you do see him then!"
"Alright – alright, don't get your panties in a knot."
"What was that?!"
"Nothing – nothing."
Sheele let Leone and Lubbock bicker like usual. Letting them settle things by themselves was often the best course of action.
However, she found herself looking towards the wall Tatsumi disappeared at.
Despite his apparent skills, she couldn't help but worry for him.
Her thoughts went back to the distress she caused on him, hoping it won't get in the way.
And her thoughts went to the promise he made. Or, rather, Sheele hoped that was a promise.
She didn't want him to get into more complications with anyone in Night Raid; she can't even imagine how she'll manage to patch things up with Mine.
As assassins, they do need to do whatever is necessary to get the job done. She knew this very well. But if a method could be avoided, then she'll do her best to do so. Only when necessary, will she get true blood on her hands.
It hadn't come to that just yet, and she was grateful for this.
But she wasn't a complete fool.
Grasping her weapon, Extase, she felt the power radiating into her body.
She will wait patiently in the hopes that Tatsumi asks for help when needed.
They were now a team. She was now his handler. And Sheele hoped she can help him in anyway she can.
Iokal's Mansion – Inside the Walls
The inside walls was covered in a latticework laced with small vines and flowers.
Rectangle, waist-high bushes adorned the middle of the lawn, organized as a patterned maze across the area.
To the left was a white shed with two windows, one for each corner of the lawn. A door was located in the back facing the wall.
And to the right was a comfortable wooden gazebo, carrying a leather chaise and a empty side table.
Tatsumi hid behind the bushes and peaked over.
He did not see any Imperial Fist bodyguards.
Instead, Tatsumi saw five servants, tending to the yard, and two Imperial guards, guarding the area.
One Imperial guard looked to be aimlessly walking around the property like a bored child. Every so often, he would sit in the gazebo and stare at the servants. After a while, he'd get up and pretend to be busy once more.
The other guard looked to be as relaxed as the first one, but instead opting to lean against the mansion wall, in between two bushes.
Upon closer inspected, next to the guard, Tatsumi could see a heavy looking door masked behind the paint color of the wall.
It likely led to the basement of the mansion. That's where he needed to go.
*creaak*
Tatsumi looked to his left.
A female servant exited the shed.
Carrying a pair of hedge clippers, she made her way towards the bushes next to the second guard.
She began trimming them, with the guard ignoring her presence.
That might be the best method to get close to that door.
Tatsumi will need to disguise himself as a servant and get another pair of hedge clippers. And it was likely that those things can be found inside of the shed.
Staying close to the bushes, Tatsumi carefully snuck past the servants and guards.
Without alerting anyone, he entered the large shed and slowly closed the door.
He remained crouched, not opting to close the windows. The servants might notice.
Across the walls were gardening tools, repair tools, and a couple of coat hangers. Among the gardening tools, Tatsumi found a second pair of hedge clippers. But unfortunately, the coat hangers did not hold any extra uniforms.
He kept searching around.
Around him were bags of dirt, grass seeds, flower seeds, a workbench, and a large chest at the center of the windowless wall.
Perhaps there was a uniform inside.
*crunch*
He turned around.
Through the open window, he could see another servant approach the door.
Before he touched the doorknob, he began to wipe the grass and leaves off his shoes.
Tatsumi quickly opened the chest, revealing it to be spacious. There was no uniform, but that would have to wait.
The servant twisted the doorknob.
Tatsumi entered the chest as the male servant entered.
"*sigh*"
Tatsumi heard the servant close the door. He place something against the wall by it.
Tatsumi carefully lifted the lid. Enough for his eyes to peer through.
The young man began to whistle as he walked away from the rake he lazily placed.
Tatsumi grew curious as the young man began closing the windows and dimming the shades.
The young servant wiped the sweat of his forehead as he moved a couple of bags of dirt over towards the workbench.
Piling them over each other, he slowly eased down and took a seat. He rested his head on top of the workbench.
The young man took a deep breath and began scratching his left eye with his clean hand.
"What else is there to do?" the servant spoke to himself.
Opting to stay silent, Tatsumi watched as the young servant relaxed more into his seat.
A seat inside a closed windowed shed. A shed that was within no ones earshot anymore.
Tatsumi saw the opportunity. He slowly crept out of the chest.
"*sigh*, I want to go to bed."
The young servant began stretching his arms, releasing a yawn in the process.
"Hopefully I can relax soon and-GURK!"
Tatsumi wrapped his arm around the servants throat.
He dragged him to the ground.
The young servant tried to pull himself out.
But Tatsumi's hold was strong.
He squeezed tighter.
The young servant fought harder.
He opted to flail his arms about.
He couldn't scream. He couldn't breath. He couldn't think.
He began scratching against his arm. But Tatsumi felt the young man losing his strength.
The scratches grew more limp. His chest was beginning to collapse.
And finally, with a weak welp, the young man went limp.
Tatsumi carefully released the unconscious man to the floor, allowing him to breath once more. There was no need to kill him. He didn't see his face, so there was no threat to his identity.
...He thought briefly of that little girl from before. Hopefully that won't come back to bite him or Mine.
Tatsumi began stripping the young servant of his clothes.
He put on his shirt. His pants. Shoes. Gloves. And finally, his hat.
He looked at himself through a steel watering can on the wall. He looked the part of a servant.
Before leaving, Tatsumi returned to the now snoring young man and lifted him up.
He placed him carefully in the chest, covered him with some tarp, and closed it.
Everything seemed to be ordinary.
Tatsumi quickly grabbed the extra pair of hedge clippers and left the shed.
He walked confidently across the yard.
The busy servants paid him no mind, and so did the second guard.
Tatsumi began trimming the hedges, right next to the guard.
He gave Tatsumi a glance.
"Huh," he released, "She missed a spot?"
"Yes," Tatsumi answered.
"Hm."
He returned his attention to the approaching first guard from before.
"Hey," the first guard called, "Hear any more commotion going on inside?"
The second guard snickered.
"Like a couple of minutes ago. Louder than gunfire, that guy."
"Did he say anything funny?"
"I heard him scream something about 'using enough garlic to kill a vampire.'"
"Pfft, my god, that guy's funny. Angry son of a bitch, huh?"
"Well I'd be too if I had to cook this late at night."
"Heh, yeah, I guess. You should open the door so we could hear him better."
"...I'd...rather not."
"Just a little, I know its-"
"Please just...no, c'mon."
"Alright, alright, whatever."
The first guard wandered away once more, this time leaving the area completely.
The second guard was left all alone at the door.
Ignoring the second guard's desire to not open the door for a second, from what Tatsumi understands of Iokal, it didn't sound too unusual for him to want a late night meal.
He seemed to lean towards a very hedonistic lifestyle. As brutal as that lifestyle is in his world. Perhaps he could use this?
Poison would be the obvious choice to use. He'd need a different servants uniform and to find some poison. He'd get a direct path towards Iokal and kill him off right then and there.
But he couldn't forget about the bodyguards as well. They'd definitely be near him when he eats, and if Iokal gets poisoned, they will no doubt be on high alert. It'll be difficult to hunt them down.
Tatsumi will need to figure out a different strategy. He'll figure something out soon, but he needs to enter the mansion first.
Perhaps the guard's apprehension for opening the door might reveal something he could use inside.
Tatsumi placed his hand on the wall in front of him and closed his eyes.
He began to focus his instincts towards it.
…
…
…
…
...Interesting.
Tatsumi can't tell anything about the room inside, but his instincts has always helped him identify any signs of life.
He could only feel one life-sign, but it was beginning to dim slowly. It led to a hunch of what this room is. It would explain why the second guard was so uncomfortable about it.
Tatsumi will need to find a way inside.
He looked around the yard from his position, seeing no obvious way he could get in.
A distraction was considered, similar to what he did outside the wall. But considering there are servants in the area, there was no doubt that someone will see him as the troublemaker.
But there is an alternative.
Tatsumi stopped clipping the hedges and began walking towards the corner.
Over it he could see the first guard, now talking with another guard while lounging around. Tatsumi hopes he'll be there for a while.
Now for his plan to take action.
He walked over to the closed-windowed shed once more.
He put the hedge clippers away and opened the large chest.
Removing the tarp revealed the still unconscious young servant.
Leaving the chest open, he peaked the door open to ensure that no one was going to enter the shed.
Tatsumi made an immediate beeline to the second guard.
"E-Excuse me," Tatsumi called.
"What?"
"U-Um," Tatsumi pointed towards the shed, "I...I need you in the shed right now."
The guard raised an eyebrow.
"Excuse me?"
"Please, keep your voice down," Tatsumi urged, "I d-don't want to start any trouble for everyone else."
This began to intrigue the guard.
Suddenly his lax attitude changed to a more serious one.
"What's wrong?"
"P-Please quiet down," Tatsumi looked behind him to see the other servants still minding their own business, "Just...Please just follow me."
He walked a bit towards the shed, beckoning the guard to follow.
With a curious look, the guard followed.
They walked as calmly as possible towards and entered the shed, leading the guard in as well.
"P-Please," Tatsumi said quietly, "I-In the chest."
The guard looked at him quizzically before approaching the opened chest.
He looked inside.
"W-What the-...?!"
The guard silenced himself. It seemed he also didn't want to cause a stir.
"H-Holy crap," he now whispered, "How is this…?"
The guard looked closer at the young servant.
"...I hear him snoring, he's alright."
The guard turned to Tatsumi.
"When did you...W-Woah, w-wait...wait a-?"
*PST*
The guard's neck shot back.
His legs went limp.
He fell into the opened chest, dead.
Tatusmi quickly peaked out of the shed window.
The servants heard nothing, but the first guard was in the yard once more, seemingly looking for his associate.
Unfortunately, he won't be able to disguise himself as the dead second guard. He'll need to improvise.
He rushed over to the chest to close it before leaving the shed. That first guard will need to be taken care of.
The servants are very good at minding their own business, even to each other. In hindsight, Tatsumi could have used this to his advantage.
Better now than never.
He went straight for the door, as the guard took notice of him.
"Hey, young boy!" he called out.
But Tatsumi kept his pace.
"Hey!" The guard began to follow Tatsumi.
Tatsumi grabbed the door-latch.
"Woah, young boy!"
Tatsumi entered the room.
"Hey, stop!"
The guard rushed to the door and opened it.
"What the hell is wrong with...you?"
The guard raised his hand up when Tatsumi pointed his pistol at him.
"Move."
The guard moved to the side of the room. They were no longer within anyone's sight.
*PST*
The guard crashed to the floor.
Tatsumi quickly peaked through the still opened door.
The servants continued their business. Nothing was heard.
He closed the door gently, waited for a bit to ensure he was in the clear.
He heard the water dripping off the stone ceiling, and felt the lamps from above emit weakened heat.
Tatsumi stood straight once more. He was successful He was inside the mansion.
Iokal's Mansion – Basement Floor 2
The floor was covered with puddles and mold.
The damp air was filled with steel and rot.
And the animal cages were soaked with blood and mucus.
Tatsumi saw some occupied. Not by animals.
Dead woman huddled inside, painting the steal bars with more blood.
But he payed them no mind. They were irrelevant to the mission.
He found a closet on the other side of the room. And a stairway at the center, leading out after turning a corner.
Tatsumi dragged the dead guard to the closet, stood him upright, and stuffed him inside.
He began taking off the guards clothes, seeing the perfect opportunity to return to his original plan.
But as he took off the guard's helmet, his eyes looked to his left to see a room with no door.
Inside was the life-sign that was slowly dimming.
A young woman, held by chains to her bloody wrists, hung low to the ground.
She was badly beaten, covered in gashes and torn flesh.
It attracted a lot of flies.
Her feet scraped across the stone ground, dragging off her toenails and skin.
Tatsumi saw some rats scurry away from them.
The blood that tricked down her naked body was beginning to dry up. She must have been there for quite some time.
But she was still alive, shown by her increasingly shaking head.
She managed to muster the strength to look up, revealing tears, a broken nose, and puss.
She'll die very soon. His identity is not at risk. It was best to move on.
But Tatsumi's steps betrayed that.
He didn't know why, but staring at that girls form...It was making his head hurt.
He approached her slowly, having entered the room.
A mixture of feelings churned inside Tatsumi's head.
Pain.
Familiarity.
...Purpose? What is this?
A phantom pain began to tingle through his spine.
His eyes never left the girls brown ones.
But the brown eyes suddenly turned green.
How long has he lasted so far?
Man, I've been doing this for almost three days now. A boy his age should have broken by now.
That's not the point of this.
I know – I know. But still, the boy isn't as fun as the others. He hasn't fallen unconscious yet, but what's the point. Can't get him to cry, can't get him to scream, can't get him to beg. He's in pain but he won't say a word. It's...very disgusting. I want to kill him.
You'll do no such thing. He's the best subject of his batch, and I will not have you end his life without facing consequences.
Relax, I was kidding. This gig is too good to do anything stupid like that, hehehe...But still, don't you think you're going too far?
Not at all. Quite frankly, I don't believe you've done enough.
You think so? That's very funny. I've almost exhausted all my ideas. Anything more and I'll kill the kid.
Do it anyway.
...Really? Are you sure?
Yes, I am. He'll heal.
I don't think you understand-
I think it'd be best if you stop questioning what's being told to you! The boy will heal, we're not worried about him dying. He's surpassing all of our expectations, so this must be intensified until he falls unconscious. We need to know the full extent of what he could handle.
Alright – alright, I'll keep at it. I'll find some fun in this, somehow.
Whatever helps you work. Get it done.
Sure thing...Alright, 47, let's continue.
Tatsumi gasped for breath.
He almost lost his balance.
Closing his eyes, and steadying his breathing, he quickly regained his composure.
Frowning, he grasped his pained head.
That was a memory. An early memory.
He looked at the girl again. Her head was still aimed at him.
The same apathy washed over him once more, but a sense of understanding encompassed his mind.
*SH-SHRRRR-*
Cold metal reverberated around the dungeon.
Tatsumi turned around, seeing a bright light enter through the corner of the stairwell.
He quickly left the room.
The footsteps from the stairs grew closer.
But just at it turned the corner, Tatsumi entered the closet.
The footsteps stopped at the floor. Whoever was downstairs was investigating the dungeon.
Did Tatsumi make too much noise? Or was this person here for another reason?
Peaking out of the closet, he saw the person in question.
An Imperial Fist bodyguard. One of five.
Tatsumi couldn't tell if this was luck or not.
Regardless, he doesn't intend to squander this opportunity.
Stopping his search, the bodyguard walked to the chained girl.
Tatsumi slowly exited the closet.
The bodyguard stopped in front of the girl.
"*sigh*, What a waste," he said.
The bodyguard felt the girls pulse, caressing her body to prolong this action.
He stopped when he felt the low life she had left.
"…Well then," the bodyguard began to take off his belt, "This will have to do."
Taking off his pants and underwear, he heard the silence of the girl.
She wasn't whimpering.
He looked up, seeing her look forward.
Mildly confused, the bodyguard looked behind-
*PST*
He fell like a porcelain doll.
Unceremoniously, that was one down.
He was about to leave, but the girl caught his attention once more.
She began to grunt and huff. Tatsumi felt the strain from her pained throat.
He looked into her eyes, which were not pointed to his.
Tatsumi lifted his arm, and the girls eyes followed the gun in his hand.
He stared at the girl quietly.
You're a...very cold person, Tatsumi. I know we're killers, but...perhaps there is some place for a little bit of empathy.
...He decided to point the gun at her.
The girl's eyes stared into the barrel of his gun. Her breathing began to relax...
*PST*
…
…
…
He felt nothing...
He grabbed the dead bodyguard and dragged him to the closet.
The closet was now full. Tatsumi could no longer hide in it. But that shouldn't be a problem now. He was done here.
And now, he has a much better disguise to use.
His disrobed the dead bodyguard and donned his clothes and armor.
It fit him nicely, but Tatsumi was doubtful that the other Imperial Fist bodyguards will be fooled. A clear beeline to Iokal was unlikely to work, he'll need to think of something else.
But for now, he should be able to bypass the guards and servants.
It was time to get out of here.
Without wasting anymore time, he climbed up the stairs, turned the corner, and grabbed the metal doorknob.
*SH-SHRRRR-*
Ioka's Mansion – Basement Floor 1
The loud scrapping of the stone ground alerted the servants around.
But when Tatsumi stepped out, they quickly looked away.
The uniform he wore was enough to create stress and anxiety. This bodyguard must have had a reputation. It was all the better for Tatsumi. No one would challenge him.
He scanned the basement around him.
In front of him was a wine cellar. To his left was the servant quarters. And to the right was a large pantry. He could smell the fresh fruit from where he stood.
Beyond the pantry was likely the kitchen, if the yelling from beyond was anything to go by.
There were no other bodyguards in the area, so Tatsumi decided to go to the kitchen.
Entering the pantry, the bags of barley and wheat almost tripped him. Looking around, the servant chefs scurried left and right, forgoing the mess so long as food wasn't being contaminated.
They were clearly being rushed, and from the bags under their eyes they were exhausted.
But the head chef continued his tirade.
"Come on! He'll have my head on a spike if you all go any slower!"
The symphony of "Yes Chef!" filled the room. But he wasn't done.
He stopped a rushed chef.
"Where the hell is the GOD DAMN CHEESE!?" the head chef screamed.
"I-It should be in the pantry!"
"Well I don't see the fucking crate! Where is it?!"
"I-I don't-"
"FIND IT, GOD DAMN IT!"
"Yes chef!" the servant ran away, but the head chef cupped his mouth.
"IF YOU DON'T FIND IT I'LL MAKE SURE YOU'RE THE ONE TO BLAME!"
He turned and kicked the trash can next to him in frustration. The garbage scattered across the floor, but away from the kitchen.
"YOU!" he pointed to another servant, "PICK THIS UP!"
"Yes chef!" the female servant began cleaning.
Out of curiosity, Tatsumi briefly looked around the pantry.
Next to some stacks of butter, he noticed a large pile of sugar and flour on the ground. Looking behind it, hidden within, he found the crate of cheese the head chef was mentioning.
Perhaps this was for a cheesecake? Tatsumi recalled some recipes requiring flour, but it wasn't common.
"Hey, e-excuse me!"
Tatsumi turned to the kitchen to see the head chef facing him.
"L-Listen, I know I'm late," he began to sweat, "I-I'm going to get him his meal, it's just it's...it's late and they're all tired and – wait no, I mean that's not a problem, I assure you. I've been whipping them all night, just give us some more time and-"
"It's fine," Tatsumi answered back.
The head chef stopped his talking, taken aback by Tatsumi's calm voice.
"It sounds like he gave you all a large load." he continued.
The head chef audibly sighed.
"You have no idea," he said, "I mean we gave him a full course meal for dinner. I don't know how he's able to eat so much."
Tatsumi let out a chuckle.
"He looks like he could lose a couple of meals, in my opinion."
"..heh...heheHAHAHAHAHA!"
The head chef bursted out laughing.
Tatsumi kept his smile as the servants that overheard their conversation chuckled as well.
They calmed down shortly after, with the stress from the head chef leaving him.
"Ah goodness gracious, *sigh*, if I say anything after that he'll skin me alive."
He took a deep breath.
"*sigh*, I'm sorry, I thought you were here to chew us out, didn't think Iokal would hire a bodyguard with some empathy."
Tatsumi didn't say anything.
The head chef sighed.
"Oh well, we have to find that cheese," he looked behind Tatsumi, "It's gotta be somewhere. Can't make his dessert otherwise."
Tatsumi briefly stared at the cheese crate hidden away under the pile.
"...I'm sorry to hear that." he hid, "Do you need it right now?"
"No, not right now," the head chef looked at his watch, "I'd say about...half an hour? Forty-five minutes?"
"I'll keep my eyes open."
"Well...thanks, I suppose. But if the servants can't find it I can't imagine you would."
"You never know," Tatsumi began walking into the kitchen, "I must be going."
He found an open door leading to a stair case. He approached it.
"Well, alright," the head chef followed him out, "And thanks, I appreciate you understanding. Just hope Iokal does. I gotta give him quite the meal to make up for this or he'll kill me."
"I'm sure whatever you prepare for him will be to die for."
"*sigh*, I hope so," he turned away, "Alright, come on everyone, focus up!"
Tatsumi entered the door to the staircase. He allowed his smile to disappear.
A young woman was cleaning the marble step with soap and water.
"Careful!" she said, "I'm still cleaning. Could you walk on the right side, please?"
Tatsumi waved and approached the stairs from the right.
*CREEEAAA*
He stopped. A door just opened above him.
Footsteps scurried down.
"You, woman!"
The voice was authoritative. It caught the servant's attention immediately.
"Have you seen another bodyguard down there."
"Huh?" the young woman immediately turning to turning to Tatsumi, "Oh, yeah your friend's down here."
"What?"
Tatsumi immediately turned around.
"Prem?"
Tatsumi re-entered the kitchen and closed the door.
"Hm?" the head chef noticed him, "What happened?"
"I forgot something," Tatsumi said.
He went straight to the pantry, quickening his pace as the kitchen door reopened.
What the hell was Prem doing? He only needed to tell the damned chefs to hurry up.
Gundo's frustration grew, especially if his hunch was correct.
If he was in that damn dungeon again, he was going to kick his ass!
He looked at the head chef, who was looking briefly at the pantry.
"Chef," Gundo got his attention, "Did you see another bodyguard down here?"
"Uh, yeah," he pointed towards the pantry, "He went that way."
Gundo grunted and walked towards the panty, but not before looking at the servants.
"And for god sake, hurry up!" Gundo ordered, "Iokal's not going to be happy if I tell him he has to wait longer!"
"Y-Yes, right away," the head chef turned to the servants, "You heard him, COME ON!"
The stress returned to the room once more.
Gundo walked through the pantry.
"Prem!"
He entered the hallway.
"Prem! Where the hell are you?!"
The servants looked away from Gundo's gaze.
He was getting very frustrated.
"PREM!"
He walked to the wine cellar. No signs of Prem.
"PREM! WE GOTTA-…"
His frustration reached it's peak at the sight in front of the wine cellar.
The dungeon door was partially open.
Clicking his tongue, he marched to the dungeon.
"PREM! YOU IDIOT!"
Opening the heavy door with ease, he walked down the stairs.
"Prem, we have a job to do," he turned the corner, "If you're fucking that girl, I'll-…"
He wasn't down here.
The cages were untouched, the closet was left closed, and the chained girl was quiet.
And he hoped it isn't because of what he thinks it is.
"Shit..."
Approaching the girl, he felt for a pulse.
"...God damn it."
He needed to dump the girl. He hated doing that. The blood was difficult to wash off his armor.
Gundo went for the first chain, detaching it from the ceiling.
The girls left arm fell down, causing her to lean.
Gundo went for the second chain, but he paused.
He did a double take.
Her head shifted back, revealing an absurd amount of blood.
Looking at the girls face, his eyes tracing up to her forehead.
There was a hole in the center.
"What the hell…?"
*SHRRRRK*
Gundo jumped. The steel door just closed.
*click* *clack* *click* *clack*
He turned around to the stairs. Armored feet walked down.
"Prem?"
There was no answer
*click* *clack* *click* *clack*
The footsteps grew closer. They'll reach the corner soon.
Gundo couldn't explain it, but for some reason he took a defensive stance.
*click* *clack* *click*…
They stopped right after the corner, hidden by the walls of the entryway.
Gundo walked cautiously to it.
"Alright, enough with the game!" he chasized, "What the hell are you-..?"
His defensive stance faltered. He tilted his head.
"Prem?"
It looked like him. Gundo recognized the uniform. But...something was strange about him.
He was standing really weird, more upright than usual. He always slouched his shoulders. Don't know why he noticed this…
...Now that he mentioned this...he seems…different...
…
…
…
What the hell?!
Gundo returned to his stance
"Who are you?!" he demanded, "Why are you wearing-?!"
The imposter raised both his arms.
*PST* *PST* *PST* *PST* *PST* *PST*
He blocked the incoming bullets.
"Bastard!"
*PST* *PST* *PST* *PST* *PST* *PST*
More bullets were fired from the left.
Gundo launched himself towards the right.
He bumped into the closet.
The imposter entered the dungeon.
*PST* *PST* *PST*
Gundo ducked underneath the bullets.
He recoiled his fist.
*WHAM*
A punch to his abdomen launched the imposter back.
But he still stood, raising his arms again.
*PST* *PST* *PST* *PST*
Gundo was forced back once more.
He grabbed the closet door for a makeshift shield.
Ripping it off its hinges, he prepared to charge at-
*SHUD*
"AUG!"
A heavy weight forced him onto the ground.
His mask fell off his face.
He tried to get the weight off, but froze.
It was Prem.
He looked at the imposter.
His silent guns were aimed at his head.
"SHIT!"
He quickly threw the body off-
*PST*
The world was gone.
Tatsumi's gun kept aim. The horrible pain in his abdomen was causing him to shake.
He closed his eyes to ease his breathing. He clenched his teeth to remove the pressure.
His heart rate began to drop and the pain began to subside.
"That was stupid…"
He lifted his shirt, revealing a pool of black, purple and blue.
This could have been so much worse. He was fortunate that the bodyguard took the closet door. Tatsumi hoped the bodyguard would be smart enough to try that. But tearing it off was not something he expected.
Still, his luck seemed to be great tonight. He has successfully killed two bodyguards. But unfortunately, he could no longer hide the bodies.
The Imperial guard and the two bodyguards were now left in the open. If someone were to walk down here, the rest of the bodyguards will no doubt be on high alert. But based on the maintenance and cleanliness of the dungeon, perhaps this wasn't a concern. Still, He has to do something.
Tatsumi tried to dim the lights in the dungeon.
It masked the bodies a bit.
He dragged them towards the corner.
It further masked them in the darkness.
They were still visible, but this will have to do.
Tatsumi exited the dungeon, closing the large metal door completely.
He found a barrel close by. He didn't know what was inside, but regardless, he pushed it to the door. Hopefully, this will mask the door into the background of anyones line of sight.
He shouldn't say here any longer. The other targets were likely upstairs. It was time to leave.
"Do you see him?"
Lubbock sighed at the repeated question.
"No, not yet, Sheele."
"Are you sure?"
"He's probably wearing a disguise," Leone chimed, "You see anyone that sorta looks like him?"
"No nothing yet, he's been out of sight for some time," Lubbock looked closer, "I've only seen some servants and some bodyguards inside. No one new yet."
"Oh no," Sheele grew anxious, "You think he's okay?"
"Of course he's okay!" Leone enthused, "After what I've seen him do, there's no way anything will get the better of him!"
"…" Sheele clutched her heart, "I hope you're right, Leone."
She turned to Lubbock.
"Anything?"
"Sheele, I promise if I find someone I'll let-...hold on."
They quickly focused on him.
"...Someone left the basement."
"Really?" Sheele quickly said, "Who?"
"Looks like a bodyguard."
"The same one?"
"No, a different one...didn't see him enter though."
Lubbock adjusted the binoculars to get a better look.
"…"
"Lubbock?"
"Hang on."
…
…
…
Lubbock's eyes widened.
"Oh!" his mouth morphed into a big smile, "Oh. My. God."
With a dumb smile, he looked closer.
"HAAH!"
He dropped the binoculars to the side and rolled over laughing.
"Is this guy serious!?"
Leone's eyes widened.
"You found him?!"
She grabbed the binoculars. Looking around, her eyes widened.
"OH MY GOD! HE'S WEARING THE BODYGUARD'S UNIFORM!" Leone jumped with excitement, "HE'S WEARING THE BODYGUARD'S UNIFORM! YES!"
Her laughter filled the night.
She tossed the binoculars to Sheele who barely caught it.
"Look at him Sheele!" Leone cried, "Oh my god, he must have gotten him good!"
Sheele looked towards the same direction they were looking at.
After a bit of searching, she found a lone bodyguard walking towards the stairs to the second floor. But looking closer, she noticed the olive skin and brown hair immediately.
It was Tatsumi. Dressed like an Imperial Fist bodyguard.
She noticed the servants look away in fear, and the Imperial guards minding their own business.
Tatsumi pretty much secured a path straight to the target. But Sheele couldn't help but focus on how in tuned the young man was to his disguise.
He walked with confidence, with his head held high and his footsteps firm. His fists were tight and his pace was focused. She saw nothing in him that could betray anything. Nothing that could reveal his identity.
He looked like he belonged there. Sheele had never seen such composure before. It was almost inhuman.
"What's he doing now, Sheele?" Lubbock asked.
"H-He's going to the third floor," Sheele said, "I think he knows that the target is on the top floor."
Looking back to the top floor, Sheele saw the man of the hour.
Iokal, sitting on a lounge chair with a whip and a young beautiful woman.
She stopped herself from looking when the whipping began.
"What happened?" Leone asked.
"Nothing..."
Sheele knew how sensitive the Lioness was to these things.
"…"
But it seemed like she caught on too well.
"Don't worry," Leone said with certainty, "Tatsumi's got this, that bastard will get what's coming."
Sheele appreciated her confidence, but there's no telling was could happen.
Looking closer at the boy, it seemed whatever happened in the basement didn't leave him unscathed.
She saw bits of purple and blue from his exposed abdomen. She didn't want to say anything, but it proved a firm reminder of his mortality.
He may be skilled, but that didn't mean he couldn't die.
Sheele hoped he doesn't go too far.
Iokal's Mansion – Floor 3
Listening to the servants interactions around the mansion, Tatsumi learned of Iokal's whereabouts.
He and the rest of the bodyguards were at the top floor.
Tatsumi saw a large number of servants scurry about. Many of them looked horrified by Tatsumi's presence, while others did their best to mask their stress.
Some carried empty plates down the hall. Looking at their direction, Tatsumi saw a large table filled with hors d'oeuvres.
He saw a stairway that will take him to the next floor.
His disguise has done him a great service, but once he gets to the top floor, it will only serve to compromise himself. He'll need to think of something.
Perhaps climbing out the window would be best? He imagined there would be piping that could lead him to the next floor.
Looking to his left, there was an empty room right next to him that had a window.
He walked to the window to check if-
"T-There you are!"
Tatsumi stopped.
A servant rushed towards him.
"H-He's already finished with his mistress," he hurried, "Do you know when his meal will arrive?"
Tatsumi shifted his mind to his current predicament.
"He won't be ready for another half an hour."
"Damn it!" the servant cursed, "Useless excuse of a chef."
The servant pointed to another door down the hall.
"Iokal requests another mistress, let's get him another."
"…Sure."
Tatsumi noticed the other servants lower their heads. Some entered rooms to hide themselves.
He followed the servant to the door, entering into a spacious room.
And in a neat squared row was a line of young, beaten women.
Most of their heads were lowered. Tatsumi's presence caused some to cry softly, and others to show whatever silent defiance their weakened bodies could muster.
The servant cleared his throat.
"Iokal liked the one you picked before," the man said, "He asks if you could choose another for him. Someone with more...passion."
"…"
Tatsumi gazed at the women.
He recalled the young girl he met in the dungeon. His empty feeling from before didn't changed.
For some reason, it began to bother him.
"...I think everyone, including Leone, would rather you not involve anyone that doesn't deserve it. Especially the women."
…
…
…
It didn't seem like he was going to be able to fulfill Sheele's request, but he had very little choices in his situation.
He wished he could have foreseen this happening before using the bodyguard disguise.
He'll just have to make sure that the girl didn't get hurt.
Tatsumi looked across the pool of girls, trying to find one that had "passion".
He spotted one that was looking to the ground. Tears soaked her eyes, yet behind them held a fiery rage. Her teeth were clenched in anger and her tight fists made her knuckles white.
She might be able to help him.
"Her."
The girl looked up in shock.
"Alright then, here."
The servant gave Tatsumi a small canvas sac. The girl looked on in horror.
She did her best to scurry back, but a swift grab from Tatsumi forced her into submission.
He forced the sac onto her head, causing her to scream.
Tying it around her neck, she began thrashing against Tatsumi.
He tried to restrain her, not noticing the servant approach them.
*POW*
The girl was knocked to the ground.
"QUIET THAT YELLING!" the servant yelled, the baton slamming into his hands.
The girl moaned in pain. It scared the other girls. Some cried louder.
"ENOUGH WITH THE CRYING!"
The servant raised his baton, and the crying was silenced.
"...Come now," the servant told Tatsumi, "Grab the girl and let's go, Iokal's very impatient."
Tatsumi looked out the window, staring at the edge of a hill within the trees.
"Come on now!" the servant urged, "I don't want to keep him waiting!"
Tatsumi raised his hand in a calming matter, but his direction was towards the window.
"Alright," Tatsumi lifted the girl to her feet, "Let's go."
"Yes, come now!"
They left the room with the girl.
Sheele removed the binoculars.
"H-He's not asking for back up."
"What do you mean?!" Lubbock yelled back, "The girl got smacked in the head, and now he's dragging her straight to the target!"
Leone stayed silent, shocked at how this could have feasibly happened.
The thoughts from before were returning again.
"Oh god, h-how could this have happened," Sheele feared.
"He's going to get that girl killed!" Lubbock yelled, "What's he thinking?!"
Lubbock turned to Leone.
"Did he do something like this before?!"
"…"
From her viewpoint, she can see the boy walking confidently down the hall. The girl in his grasp no longer fought back. Even his wave to disarm her, Lubbock, and Sheele, was relaxed.
Was that supposed to calm her down. She still felt nothing from that…
"Leone?!" Lubbock called.
She looked at Lubbock, "I think he has something planned."
Lubbock and Sheele blinked.
"Y-You think so?"
"...Yeah," Leone said, "After what I saw, he seems to adapt well to new situations. He told me he normally...improvises. They should be fine."
She looked at Sheele, who was still worried. But those eyes of heres began to hold firm.
"Well...alright then," Sheele gave Leone her confidence, something she appreciated.
"S-Sheele?" Lubbock was shocked, "She just said he improvises! What's he going to do?!"
"I didn't tell you guys this," she began to explain, "But he told me that he would do his best to avoid involving the women. Unfortunately...that's no longer possible...but..."
Sheele looked at Lubbock.
"I'm want to trust him."
Lubbock was shocked. He looked to Leone, who still held true to her own words.
He relented, but he was still skeptical.
"I still don't like this," he said, "If that girl get's hurt, I'm going to slice his legs off."
Leone and Sheele said nothing, opting to return to Tatsumi.
Sheele seemed calmer than before, but Leone was still very uncomfortable.
He moves so naturally. There was no doubt in his pace.
Leone hoped her intuition was right.
Haruna was terrified. She couldn't accept that this was her end.
All she needed was money, enough to keep the loan sharks off her back. She thought the man she met back in the red-light district would've be simple to con.
And now, she was forced to walk to her death.
Her head was still throbbing, and her tears refused to let out. But her teeth remained clenched, maintaining whatever strength she had left.
If Haruna was going to die, there was no way she was going to give these sons of bitches the satisfaction.
"In here," she heard the Imperial Fist bodyguard order.
She was forcefully guided to the left, going through a wooden door and entering a colder room.
"In this room?" the servant questioned, "We need to get this mistress to Iokal, why are we-"
"I need to check something, one second."
Her arm was released.
"Watch her, going to look around the room."
"A-Alright then," the servant obeyed.
Haruna didn't move, unnerved by the footsteps of the new bodyguard as he moved around the room.
She had no idea who the servant thought he was, but she knew this young man was not the same bodyguard from before. Haruna felt confidence and poise from his demeanor. He was far more professional than the monster before. She always steered clear of people like that. They were far less likely to be swindled than the Joe Schmoes that she'd talk to.
She knew it was hopeless to beg for mercy. She continued to clench her teeth, trying to damndest to stop the tears from soaking the canvas sack.
"Alright, I'm done," she heard the bodyguard say.
"Okay?" the servant released, "I-I still don't understand what you were looking for."
The bodyguard walked closer.
"W-Well, let's get going-"
*WHAM*
Haruna jumped. The air lodged into her throat.
*THUD*
Something heavy fell to the ground.
The bodyguard's footsteps approached the source.
She began to shake. She was already heading towards her death, what more could she take?!
His footsteps stopped. Haruna kept perfectly still.
*shrrrrrrrr*
He was dragging something away from her.
Was it the servant?
What did he do to the servant?
What's happening?!
The tears suddenly intensified.
Did he knock out the servant?!
Why would he do that?!
*kreeee*
He just opened something.
The sounds of crinkling cloth was forced and pulled.
*curclunck*
A closet! He must have hid the body in the closet!
Oh god, this was it!
Was he going to kill her?! Rape her?!
Why would he not?!
This is it! Haruna is really going to die!
Oh my god! She doesn't want to die!
Her tears lost control.
She wants to live! She doesn't want to die! Please someone save her!
"Calm down."
The tears continued, but her breathing stifled from the request.
"I need you to calm down."
She can't! She can't calm down! She's going to die!
Haruna felt her shoulders grasped.
"Calm down."
His voice was at an even level. It was never raised.
Why was he trying to calm her down?
Haruna's found her breathing start to steady.
"I need to leave you for a minute. If you leave, you'll get yourself killed. Do you understand?"
Haruna didn't answer.
She was so confused, and so scared.
What where this man's intentions?
"Do you understand?" he repeated.
She didn't know what to think, but what choice did she have.
"Y-Yes."
Unlike before, the grip on her arm was more gentle.
She felt herself guided towards a waist-high cabinet.
She heard the cabinet door open.
"Hide in here," he ordered.
Without hesitation, she did was she was told.
Cuddled inside the large cabinet, she tightly hugged her knees.
"Stay here, I'll be right back." And the door closed.
She waited for a couple of second.
Seconds turned to minutes.
By then, it suddenly occurred to her to take off the sack over her head.
"What's he got planned?"
"Leone?" Lubbock moved next to her, "What's happening?"
"He left the girl in a cabinet."
"...Huh?"
"I said he left the girl-"
"I-I know what you said, but why?"
"I'm not sure," Leone gave Lubbock the binoculars, "He comes up with weird plans."
"Like what?" Sheele asked.
"I...don't know where to start."
The memory of that imperial officer returned. At that point he could perform black magic and Leone wouldn't question it.
She turned to Lubbock.
"You see what he's doing?"
He looked closer.
"He's...going back downstairs."
"W-What?" Sheele was confused.
"Really?" Leone was as well. After all that progress, he's going back down?
"Yeah," Lubbock put down the binoculars, "He's pretty quick too, just entered the basement."
"...Huh."
This guy's really weird. There's gotta be a payoff somewhere.
"C-Can I see?" Sheele asked.
"Sure, here," Lubbock handed her the binoculars, "You won't find him though, who knows what he's doing down there."
Sheele placed the binoculars to her eyes, looking all over the mansion from top to bottom.
"Where's the girl, Lubbock?"
"The one in the cabinet? She's on the...third floor, fourth window to the left."
Sheele moved accordingly.
She froze a bit, a bead of sweat appearing on her temple.
"Which cabinet?"
Lubbock noticed her nerves.
"I...think the second, middle one."
"Oh no..."
"What's wrong?" Leone asked.
"There's a servant in there, and another bodyguard."
"What?" Leone walked in to Sheele, "Can I see?"
Sheele reluctantly gave the binoculars to Leone. She snatched it from her hands.
Putting them on, her thoughts raced.
"Oh crap."
She saw the bodyguard berating the servant, likely about where the previous servant was.
"L-Leone," Sheele called, "Do you see Tatsumi?"
"Hold on," Leone shifted to the basement area.
Coming out the door, in a hurried pace, was a bodyguard just about to reach the first set of stairs.
"Yeah, I see him," Leone confirmed, "He's coming back up."
"God damn it," Lubbock cursed, "What's the bodyguard doing now?"
Leone looked back at the third floor room.
The bodyguard and servant seemed to be checking the cabinets from left to right.
"They must have heard her," she said, "They're checking the cabinets."
"That dumb bastard," Lubbock paced away from the mansion, "He's gonna get her killed."
"Please, Lubbock," Sheele tried to ease, "He couldn't have possibly known. You know this."
"I don't care," Lubbock exasperated, "I hate seeing gorgeous women get killed."
"No way."
Lubbock and Sheele looked at Leone.
"...Wow! Looks like the girl's got some bark!"
Lubbock and Sheele blinked in unison.
"Leone?"
"She's peaking out of the cabinet," she said, "She's got something shiny in her hand! I think it's a knife or something."
This couldn't be luck. Tatsumi couldn't have just randomly picked a woman like that among others. This has his name written all over it.
But still, she was still in danger.
Leone viewed Tatsumi approaching the second floor. He quickened his pace.
There must be something to this. It pained Leone to admit this, but she knew the girl's life was irrelevant to the mission. And she knew Tatsumi likely felt the same.
If she held some sort of purpose to him, then she'll have to wait and see.
Haruna grasped the letter opener tightly as she barely saw the female servant grow closer to her cabinet.
*creeee*
Another cabinet opened.
"I-I don't see anyone," the servant said.
"Well keep looking!" The bodyguard demanded, "I know I heard something."
The bodyguard passed the servant.
"I'll take it from here, go to the end over there." He pointed to the wall to the right of her.
"Y-Yes sir!" She rushed to the end of the room.
*creeee*
The bodyguard opened the last cabinet of her set, closing it quickly in a huff.
He quietly shifted to the next set of cabinets. The set Haruna's was part of.
She clentched her teeth and closed her eyes as the bodyguard inched closer.
*creeee*
He opened the first one.
"W-Where the hell are you?" Haruna softly whispered to herself.
Why was he taking so long!
The bodyguard inched closer.
*creeee*
The second one, empty.
Haruna's heart skipped.
Her's was next.
She tightened grip on the letter opener.
It was pointed to the cabinet door.
She heard the bodyguard shift over.
He motioned to the knob…
…
…
…
He stopped moving.
It was suddenly quiet.
Haruna tried to control her breathing.
But her brain kept betraying her control.
Sweat dripped off her nose.
Her hair matted to her face.
"I hear your breathing."
...Haruna began to tear up.
"Come on out, let's get this over with."
She didn't say a word.
Another set of feet rushed over to the bodyguards side. It was likely the servant's.
Her teeth tightened, and the tears began to fall once more.
"I said, come on out," the bodyguard drew closer to the cabinet, "Or I'll drag you out."
...This was it. It's over.
Whatever happened to the other bodyguard? Why did he leave her?
She knew it was too good to be true.
She was going to die...
Still...if she was going to die…
"So be it."
She was taking the bodyguard with her!
The cabinet door bursted open
Haruna thrusted her arms and closed her eyes.
*SHULK*
She felt a strong hand grasp onto her wrist.
It was being squeezed tightly.
She whimpered.
Did she fail?
Her eyes refused to open.
But suddenly, warm liquid began to soak her fingers.
"...*Gurk*"
The strong hand was released, and the weight of the bodyguard slid off the letter opener.
Haruna opened her eyes.
The bodyguard grasped his throat. Blood soaking through his gloves.
"Hah...HAAH!"
The female servant fell to the ground.
*BOOM*
The entrance door opened forcefully.
Someone entered.
"H-HELP!" the servant screamed, "HELP!"
She rushed away from the scene, heading towards the door.
"S-SHE KILLED A BODYGUARD! SHE-"
*PST*
A body collapsed to the ground.
The door was closed. And the body was dragged.
Haruna peaked out the cabinet once more.
Approaching a closet was another bodyguard.
He opened the closet, revealing the unconscious body of the other servant, and placed the dead one inside.
He approached her cabinet.
Haruna couldn't help but tense up.
"Sorry I'm late," the bodyguard said, "Things took longer than I thought."
He noticed the dead bodyguard on the ground, then to the letter opener in her hands.
"You caught him by surprise," he stated, "I guess choosing you was correct."
"W-Who are you?" Haruna demanded, "W-What do you want from me?"
"..."
The bodyguard didn't say anything.
Haruna didn't like this. She tried to bring a strong front.
"Y-You heard me!" she pointed the letter opener awkwardly from the cabinet, "Who are you?!"
"…"
She tried to stare harshly at him, but her fear was far too palpable.
"...Well?!" she released.
"...I'm a...hitman."
Haruna faltered. Her weapon lowered slightly.
"A...hitman?"
"Yes."
"..."
She's heard so much about Night Raid she forgot hitmen existed.
"W-Well...What do you want from me?"
"I need your help."
Haruna shuddered her breath.
"W-Why?!"
"I need to get close to the other bodyguards, and Iokal."
Haruna's eyes widened.
"A-Are they your targets?"
"Yes," the hitman pointed at the dead body, "You've killed the third bodyguard. There's two left."
She looked at the bodyguard on the ground. She saw the blood leave his throat faster then she's ever seen before.
"You can keep the letter opener."
She looked at the hitman again.
"Will you help me?"
…
…
…
"N-No way!" she released, "I-I'll get myself killed, and for what?"
"…Alright. Then hide in here then."
The bodyguard began to leave.
"W-Wha?"
Haruna left the cabinet.
"W-Where are you going?"
He was heading for the door.
"Wait! D-Don't leave me here!"
This bastard! They'll kill her!
"Damn it, wait!"
He stopped so she could catch up.
"F-Fine…Fine, what do you want?!"
"Put this on."
Haruna stiffened as the hitman handed her the canvas sack.
She saw the hitman walk towards the closet again.
"Put it on," he repeated.
She was uncertain, regretting having agreed to help.
Her only comfort was the letter opener in her hand.
"What's wrong?" he approached her once more.
"...Y-You're not going to let them hurt me, will you?"
"I won't."
"You promise?"
"...Yes"
"…"
His voice was unmoving. Haruna didn't know if he was lying or not.
"You just need to follow my lead," he guided her hands behind your back, "Hide the letter opener like this."
Haruna's arms were brought together as if she were wearing handcuffs. It allowed her to mask the letter opener with her closed hands.
"Don't act suspicious, and don't bring too much attention to yourself. I'll handle the rest."
"...Okay," She felt a tad bit more confident.
"Can you put on the sack?"
"...Alright."
She put the sack over her head.
The hitman tied it fairly around her neck, and returned back to the closet.
She heard the ruffling of cloth and metal. From the barely visible canvas sack, she saw a silhouette of the hitman changing his clothes to the servants. His face was not shown through the sack, however.
Once he was done, he approached her again.
"Let's go."
Gently, he guided her out of the room and into the dreaded hallway, heading towards her death once again.
"That's his plan?!"
Lubbock released the binoculars.
"What?" Sheele asked Lubbock.
"He's taking the girl to the target."
"He what?!" Leone exclaimed.
"Yea–Hey!" Leone snatched the binoculars.
"What's he thinking?"
This was far too dangerous. This couldn't have come from someone like him.
From Leone's observation during the initiation, he clearly thrived in stealth and espionage. Tatsumi doesn't stand a chance at a head on assault, that was their specialty!
But Leone watched Tatsumi confidently walk towards the set of stairs. He was as business-like as he's been since she met him.
No normal person would ever do something like this and not feel the tiniest bit of anxiety. It was becoming difficult to fear for his safety, and she found herself feeling very uncomfortable.
The thoughts returned to her. The same ones from before. Her discomfort increased.
As she watched Tatsumi, Leone was beginning to understand why.
The sounds of scampering servants filled the hallway. Some whispered of food finally reaching Iokal. They seemed rather pressed out the dessert though, still unable to find a recipe.
But that was all Haruna could hear before she was brought back to the silence between her and the hitman.
The composed way he acts and talks disturbs her. But since they left the room he didn't speak to her, and Haruna desperately needed something to quell her anxiety.
"H-Hey," she called, "What's your name?"
"…"
She sweat a bit.
"Um...My name is Haruna," she revealed, "C-Could you please tell me your name?"
"...Tobias."
"O-Oh," Haruna stuttered, "It's...It's nice to meet you, I guess, Tobias."
"…"
She sighed. At least he was willing to tell her his name.
"We're almost there."
She perked up, her heart skipping a beat at the upcoming set of stairs.
"H-Hey, Tobias," she called, "You said...You said your not going to let them hurt me, right?"
"So long as you listen to my instructions," he released her, "Wait her for a moment."
"O-Okay."
He walked ahead and climbed up the stairs.
Haruna rubbed the letter opener with her thumb, doing her best to hide the rest within her closed hands.
It had only just occurred to her that she had killed a man. Granted, he would killed her, but she never would have imagined being in such a situation.
It felt like yesterday she was walking around the red light district. Now, she killed an Imperial Fist bodyguard.
She was grateful to not have to continue this thought as she heard Tobias climb down the stairs.
"There's an empty chair with rope in the center of the room," he revealed, "There's also one bodyguard by it. And one by Iokal."
Haruna began to sweat.
"W-We don't stand a chance."
"If you follow my instructions, we will."
Tobias took out something from his side. From what she could see through the canvas sack, it looked like two pistols. She remembered hearing something very quiet in the other room, something that killed the servant lady. But there was no way it would have come from a gun.
As he checked the magazine, she couldn't help but notice the elongated barrels on each of them. What they were, she had no idea.
But regardless of their looks, there's no way two pistols will be enough to kill two Imperial Fist bodyguards
"I-Is that all you have?" she asked, "T-Those guys have armor! There's no way those thing's will penetrate that!"
"I know," Tobias cocked the last gun before conceiling it behind his pants, "When they finish tying you up, start cutting."
Haruna remained silent, perturbed by his calm demeanor.
"I'm going to lure one of the guards to you. He'll move to you from behind. When I give the signal, stab him in his leg."
"W-What?!" Haruna began to panic, "B-But what if the other one-?"
"That won't happen," Tobias interrupted, "Just do exactly what I told you."
"…"
"...Do you understand?"
Haruna stiffened a bit.
"P-Promise me you won't let them hurt me."
"I already said-"
"You didn't promise me!" she insisted, "D-Do it."
"…I promise I won't let them hurt you."
That only calmed Haruna down a bit.
"We need to go," he urged.
Haruna took a deep breath.
"O-Okay."
They climbed up the stairs.
Each one filled Haruna's heart with dread, knowing she was climbing closer to her death.
The words of the hitman gave her little comfort.
She held her breath from the sound of an opening door.
Iokal's Mansion – Top Floor
Tatsumi observed his surroundings.
The room was a small, luxurious warm lounge. Mahogany floors spread across, complimented by leather furniture and wooden tables and chairs.
But in the center, where a coffee table would normally be, is a worn chair. Above it was a hook with metal chains and cuffs.
In front of him was one other servant, and the last three targets.
Two Imperial Fist bodyguards stood tall and were placed around the room.
One wore the typical mask, tunic, and armor.
The other bodyguard did not wear his mask, allowing his long braided blonde hair to flow down his back.
This must be Shihandai, as he was staring at Tatsumi quite harshly.
He looked at his person up and down.
"What happened to Gundo and Prem?" he prodded.
"Sir Gundo was fetching him down in the basement," Tatsumi said, "He asked me to come and assist up here."
"...And what happened to the other servant?"
"*MUNCH* Enough with the questions! I have no patience for these games, Shihandai!"
Eating a large cut slice of a beef wellington was the main target himself.
Iokal.
He looked at Tatsumi.
"It's about time someone showed up! First my meal, then my mistress! For goodness sake! *MUNCH*" saliva dripped onto his collar, "Put her on the chair, now!"
Tatsumi placed her on the chair as another servant went beside Tatsumi to assist him.
"Tie her up! I want a perfect view to compliment my meal!"
Tatsumi and the other servant began doing just that.
"H-Hey."
Tatsumi heard the servant whisper to him.
"What happened to Mr. Williamson?"
"...He had other affairs to attend to," Tatsumi lied, "He should be back soon."
"Oh...Okay."
They tied up the girl up.
The servant returns to their position, but Tatsumi stayed a bit longer.
"One second.".
He positioned the letter opener closer to the edge of Haruna's index finger and thumb. Since her range of motion has been limited, it would be best to make it easier for her to move it.
"...Done, sorry about that."
Tatsumi bowed to Iokal.
"...Alright," Iokal gulped the food in his mouth, "Now get away from her *MUNCH*...before you spoil her!"
"Yes sir."
Tatsumi moved away from the girl, standing into his position on the wall.
The shadows where he and the servants stood masked their presence. It was a great illusion, if Iokal's treatment of his staff has anything to say about his opinions of their presence.
Iokal swallowed his food.
"Now...Shihandai, Troy, take off her sack," he smiled, "I want to see her gorgeous face~."
"Yes sir," Shihandai smiled as well, while Troy followed along silently.
Shihandai walked towards the girl, but not without taking another glance at Tatsumi.
Tatsumi did not glance back. His eyes were oddly piercing, perhaps Shihandai wasn't so convinced of his story.
But this would be quick-lived, as he reached the girl and took off her sack.
Haruna would have awed at the luxurious room had she not been tied up in it.
She saw the bodyguards walk away back to Iokal. But here eyes were left on the blonde one.
She was horrified when he stared back with a sly smile.
"Hello again," he said, "Enjoying your time here?"
She grew angry.
"Y-You bastard!"
It was him! He tricked her! He was the one that kidnapped her!
He chuckled in delight.
The fat man, Iokal, began to smile.
"Oooh, *MUNCH*, I like her already~" scraps of food left his mouth, "You all sure knows how to pick them!"
He dug into his meal further, leaving Haruna to further observe the room.
The two servants were masked by the shadows, likely to hide their presence.
She was bothered by this, having hoped to see what Tobias looked like.
"Tell me, my little rose~" Iokal cut into his beef wellington, "What – *MUNCH*...What's your name?"
"…"
Shihandai's smile grew wider.
"I don't think she wants to tell you, sir."
"Oh? HeheheHAHAHAHA!"
Iokal grabbed something from underneath his table.
"Ah! Here we are!"
He took out the dreaded thing.
A whip.
"Let's see!"
*CRACK*
"ACK!"
The whip didn't hit her, but the ringing in her ear scared her to bits.
"There we go~" Iokal smiled, "Now, what's your name."
She tried to keep it together, remembering the letter opener in her fingers.
She began to move it into position.
"H-Haruna."
She began cutting the rope.
"Oh wow! That a really pretty name!"
Shihandai began to chuckle again.
Haruna's anger grew.
She kept trying to cut the rope. She felt it begin to tear.
"You keep looking at my top bodyguard, Haruna, *MUNCH*," Iokal chewed his food, "Why's that?"
Haruna looked at the fat man, his snide smile revealing he already knew the answer.
"...How'd he do it?"
Haruna bit her tongue, causing Shihandai to step forward a bit.
"She came to me and-"
"Uhp-uhp-uhp!" Iokal silenced Shihandai, "I don't want to hear it from you, Shihandai."
He took out his whip again.
"Tell me Haruna," he smiled, "How'd he convince you?"
Haruna kept her teeth clentched, trying to cut the rope faster.
"He…" she breathed deeply, "He said he'd give me some money."
"Oh? Money?" Iokal looked amused, "For what?"
Shihandai began to grin.
"…" Haruna couldn't speak.
Iokal smiled widened. He probably already knew.
"So you're a whore then?"
Haruna felt the tears begin to swell up.
"N-No...I'm not."
"But you were going to perform a...sexual favor? Was it?"
Shihandai chucked greatly.
"She said she'd do whatever so long she was paid!" he said.
"Did she now?!" Iokal turned to playfully slapped the back of Troy, "Well she did say she'd do whatever, right? HeheHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Troy chose not to speak.
Haruna felt the first loop tear apart.
Her anger-filled tears didn't stop.
When the laughter died out, she cut slower to mask the noise.
Iokal whipped the tears off his face.
"Oh my," he took a deep breath, "Tell me, rose, what would you have used that money for?"
"…"
"...Do we need to do this again?"
Iokla playfully took out the whip.
Haruna answered immediately.
"L-Loan sharks…"
Iokal blinked in surprise.
"Oh?" he lowered his whip, intrigued, "You owe money?"
"N-No…" Haruna began to calm down, her tears turning into ones of frustration, "My...mother."
"Your mother, huh?" Iokal smiled, "She must be pretty worried about you then."
"...She's...dead."
"Oh...*MUNCH*…Oh I see!" Iokal moved the empty plate away, "So the debt transferred to you then?"
"...Yes."
She cut the second loop. Three more left.
"So was your mother a whore then? Heheheh."
Haruna gritted her teeth.
"N-No," she tried to say, "She was a...gambler."
"Oh...yeah that outta do it," Iokal began wiping his mouth, "I'm quite the gambler myself. Not very good at it, but the rush you get when you win is...intoxicating!"
Haruna cut the third rope. She tried cutting faster.
"I remember the best Blackjack game I've ever played! You should have seen the looks on those pathetic face when I-"
*CLANK* *Clank* *clink* *clink* *clink* *clink* *clink*
…
…
…
Haruna's eyes were wide open.
"What was that?" Iokal asked.
"It came from her chair, sir," Troy said.
Oh my god.
What has she done!
Shihandai approached the chair.
He immediately went behind it and looked at the wooden floor.
"...What the hell is this?!"
She looked at the servant looking directly at her
It was Tobias, masked in the darkness.
"It's a letter opener!" he picked it up from he ground, "She's trying to cut the ropes!"
"Is she?!" Iokal said, shocked.
"N-NO-ACK!"
Shihandai grabbed her hair and put the letter opener to her throat.
"You really think you're slick?"
He slammed her to the ground.
"Pulling something like that, HUH?!"
"N-NO, NO!"
"NO, SHIHANDAI STOP!"
Shihandai looked at Iokal.
"Stop...this...this is," a wicked smile grew on his face, "This is perfect!"
His mouth began to drool, and blood escaped from his nose.
"This is beyond perfect! This is beyond anything I could get! This is better than dessert!"
He stood up from his chair.
"W-We need to do this now!"
"Right now?" Shihandai was shocked.
"Y-Yes, YES, OH MY GOD YES~"
He grabbed his whip and rushed around the table.
"Hurry, HURRY, CHAIN HER UP RIGHT NOW!"
Shihandai did just that.
"NO, NOOOOOO!"
Shihandai chained her up.
She was hoisted onto the hook.
She screamed in terror.
"YES, KEEP SCREAMING!" Iokal swung his whip to the side.
*CRACK* *CRACK* *CRACK*
"AURGH"
One crack hit the other servant, causing him to crash to the ground.
"NO NOOOOO!"
She looked at Tobias.
"H-HELP MEEEEE!"
"PUT THE SACK BACK ON HER!"
Shihandai did just that.
She squirmed and fought on the chain.
"HEEEELP, PLEASE!"
Iokal prepared his first strike.
"TOBIAS!"
*CRASH*
Iokal stopped.
Everyone's focus was on the door.
"S-SIR!"
Iokal grew enraged.
"Right now is NOT THE GOOD TIME!"
He prepared his whip for the servant.
"NO, SIR!"
"GET THE HELL OUT OF-"
"THE BODYGUARDS ARE DEAD!"
He stopped his assault.
"What..What are you-?"
"T-Two bodyguards, sir!" the servant tried to speak, "W-We found two bodyguards dead in the dungeon!"
"What?" Troy stepped forward.
"When did this happen?" Shihandai interrogated.
"W-We don't know, we found a missing ingredient down there, t-the cheese, and...and we found the bodies! There's a dead imperial guard down there too!"
"SHIT!" Shihandai turned to Troy, "It's an attack! I'll alert the guards! You stay with Iokal!"
"Yes sir!"
Shihandai rushed out of the room, leaving it in silence.
Haruna didn't know what had just happened.
She couldn't see Tobias anymore, nor could she see anything else.
"A-Are we safe up here?" she heard Iokal's sweat hit the floor.
"We are," Troy promised, "We're at the highest point of the mansion, not even Night Raid could reach us."
"Sir, if I may, what about the girl?"
Troy and Iokal immediately turned to the only servant left conscious.
Haruna recognized his voice.
"If I were you, I'd make sure her chains are locked tight. We don't want her trying to escape again."
"…"
"…"
Iokal and Troy looked at each other.
"...Yes...That's a good idea," Troy agreed.
He approached Haruna's back.
"Now don't try anything girl," Troy warned, "I can do way worse then what Iokal and Shihandai-"
"Now!"
*WHAM*
The air left Troy's lungs when Haruna kicked with all of her might.
She felt her wrists strained from her own weight, but the adrenaline blocked the pain.
Tobias rushed Troy as he hit the floor.
"ARGH"
From the side, she saw Troy grappled to the ground.
"W-WHAT THE-"
*THWACK*
Haruna saw Troy's mask slide to her feet.
"ARGH, YOU-"
*PST*
Troy went silent.
"H-HAAAAAH!" Iokal fell to the ground, "W-W-W-W-WHAT DID YOU DO!"
Tobias approached Iokal.
"WAIT!" Iokal crawled backwards, "WAIT-WAIT-WAIT-WAIT-WAIT-WAIT-WAIT-WAIT!"
He hit the wait.
"WAIT-WAIT-PLEASE-LISTEN TO ME-LISTEN TO ME!"
Tobias was right in front of him.
"H-HEY, NO-NO-NO-NO-NO!" he raised his hands in surrender, "I-I GOT MONEY! I GOT MONEY-I CAN GIVE YOU WHATEVER-GUUUURG!"
The barrel entered his mouth.
"GUUUURK!" Iokal began to cry, "HURRHURHURRRRK! GAAAAA-!"
*PST*
Iokal was silenced.
His body toppled over.
Haruna allowed the quiet to wash over her.
Her heart was still pumping so fast. She couldn't believe she was still alive.
Tobias approached her.
"Sorry," he began fiddling with the lock, "I didn't think it would take this long for someone to notice."
He freed her.
"Are you alright?"
"Y-Yeah," she rubbed her eyes with her freed hands, "I'm okay."
"Good," he said, "Stay here for a bit, and get out as soon as things quiet down."
"O-Okay," she took off the sack, "I-I'm sorry for dropping the-…"
She looked around the room.
"T-Tobias?"
He was gone.
She never even got to see what he looked like.
Iokal's Mansion – Third Floor
That was a close one.
He didn't intend for the girl to be in that kind of danger. In fact, he couldn't have ever predicted a bodyguard of all people being the type to choose a girl for Iokal.
These targets of the Empire are a different breed altogether. He'll need to take this into consideration from now on.
At least the girl wasn't killed. Less collateral damage was something he tried to strive for, but sometimes things were outside of his control.
So long as his actions don't get traced back to him, he should be fine.
However he will admit this was a very messy mission.
He wondered what Sheele was thinking. It was never his intention to not fulfill her escalation, so he hoped she understood. It seemed his behavior was causing him as much trouble as it did in the Revolutionary Army.
And those memories had come back to him at such a horrible time.
But he shifted those thoughts away. Right now, he was still on the job. And the job was almost over.
As he rushes past the panicked servants, all of whom were trying to find a place to hide, Tatsumi searched for Shihandai.
He said he was going to the guards, and the only guards Tatsumi saw were the ones outside the mansion. That's where he'll likely go, but he'll need to rush or he'll lose track of him.
Tatsumi ran with some of the servants, eventually finding and rushing down a set of stairs to the second floor.
Iokal's Mansion – Second Floor
The servants dispersed to their own directions, leaving Tatsumi all by himself.
He rushed to the left hallway, leading him to the side of the mansion with windows facing the front side.
Tatsumi assumed Shihandai was just exiting the mansion. He approached a window to see.
But instead of finding the man warning the guards, he instead found an empty stairway leading down to the front entrance with missing guards.
He must have been too slow.
And now he'll need to find Shihandai somewhere in this large mansion.
He prepared for his search, moving away from the window to-…
…
…
…
Tatsumi returned to the window.
His instincts were heightened.
Something's not right.
He staring at the empty window for a bit longer...
He slowly walk away.
He approached the next window, and slowly peaked his head out.
His eyes widened.
*CRASH*
Tatsumi dodged the broken glass.
He caught himself in a reverse somersault.
Landing on the brown carpeted floor, angered by his missed attacked, was Tatsumi's last target.
"*tsk*," Shihandai swiped the glass of his shoulders, "I knew there was something weird about you. Made me think I was crazy!"
He got into a fighting stance.
"You dodging that attack ruined your game of pretend," he grew angry, "Who the hell are you?!"
"…"
Tatsumi slowly took out both his pistols.
Shihandai eye's narrowed. His fists tightened.
But before he could attack, something crossed Shihandai's mind.
His eyes widened, looking at the two guns.
"Son of a bitch," he gritted his teeth, "You killed them, didn't-"
*PST* *PST*
Shihandai moved to the side, one bullet entering his shoulder.
*PST* *PST* *PST* *PST* *PST*
Using his armor, he dodged and deflected the bullets.
He rushed closer to Tatsumi.
"GRAAH!"
He swiped from his left.
Tatsumi dodged back.
He raised his pistols.
*PST* *PST*
But Shihandai punched both his hand away.
The bullets grazes the sides of his neck.
Tatsumi lost his grip, losing his guns.
Shihandai grabbed Tatsumi's neck.
"Bastard!" Shihandai forced him against the wall, "The Emperor will have my head for this!"
His other hand grabbed his throat.
"Unless I have yours!"
Shihandai pushed with all his might.
Tatsumi felt his throat begin to close.
He quickly turned his body.
The chokehold was weakened.
Tatsumi slams his fist into him.
*TWACK*
"ARGH"
Shihandai grabbed his face
The chokehold was released.
Tatsumi rushed for his gun.
But a shadow grows above it.
Tatsumi dodges an axe kick, destroying the floor and tossing his gun away.
Shihandai stands and faces him.
"I'm taking you down, boy!"
He launched at him with a side kick.
It was too quick to dodge.
Tatsumi tried to block the attack.
*WHAM*
But the kick was too strong.
He was launched towards the other side of the hall.
Skidding to a halt, Tatsumi crouched to the ground.
His arms were damaged, he ignored the pain.
One of his guns was in the middle of the room, and Shihandai was beginning to stand once more.
Tatsumi's thought of his next move, but his instincts alerted him to the window.
"..."
He supposed this was the best time for it.
Tatsumi turned back to the now standing Shihandai.
He also sees the second gun in the middle of the room.
They looked back at each other.
In an instant, they both dart towards the center.
But Shihandai made it first.
He kicked the gun away.
"HAH-WOAH!"
He stumbled when Tatsumi restrained him from his back.
"Wha-"
"Now!"
*CRASH*
The window broke open.
Shihandai's eyes grew wider than saucers when a giant blade reached out to him.
*SHUUURK*
"…"
Shihandai suddenly saw the ceiling.
He was approaching it slowly, but he never moved his neck.
As gravity returned to him, he saw the upside-down face of the boy that restrained his separated body.
In front of him was the young woman with a pair of large scissors aimed to his neck.
"I'm sorry."
The blood was leaving his brain very quickly.
Within moments, he would die.
Yet before the world went black, he recognized the girl that ended him.
Without windpipes, he couldn't speak.
He could only mouth one soundless phrase.
"Night...Raid…"
*SPLAT*
His head coated the floor with blood. The body spurted the rest.
When the sounds died, Tatsumi took a knee.
"...Thanks," he said.
Sheele immediately went to his side.
"Are you alright?!" She tried to roll up his sleeves, "You really took a beating, those arms have to be-...!"
She was shocked.
"Huh?"
The bruising was beginning to heal.
She began untucking and pulling up his shirt.
"..."
His torso had practically healed.
"Sheele!"
Entering through the window was Lubbock.
Right behind him was Leone.
"Aw man," she complained, "I missed the action."
Tatsumi delicately released his arms from Sheele and tucked his shirt back in.
"I didn't mean to get that girl involved," he tried to explain, "I didn't expect that Iokal had his bodyguards pick the girls for him."
"Y-Yeah, I assumed so," Sheele frowned, "I just...I wish you didn't use her like you did."
"Yeah what the hell was that?!" Lubbock questioned, "That could have gone way worse than it did! You're only off the hook because that girl was unharmed."
"I bet you're only saying that because she was pretty," Leone retorted.
"Wha-no!" Lubbock scratched his head, "But don't make light of what happened, she didn't need to get involved."
"I didn't foresee this happening," Tatsumi defended, "At the time it seemed like the best way to reach the last targets. I've already killed three targets by then, so luring one away by the dead bodies in the dungeon was the best way forward."
"So thats what that was," Leone spoke to herself.
"Well...alright, whatever," Lubbock approached the window, "Just don't do that crap again. I don't care what the circumstances are. If we could avoid it, let's not involve any women."
"I'll keep that in mind."
Tatsumi looked at Sheele. Her face was still pensive.
"...Sorry," Tatsumi said to her.
That seemed to have perked her up, but her face was still serious.
"...We'll talk about this later," she said, "We need to leave."
"Alright," Lubbock calmed down, "Leone, help him out."
"Yep!"
Leone approached Tatsumi again.
"Hyup!"
...He was held like luggage again.
They quickly jumped out the window, escaping into the night.
Despite the messy nature, it would seem Tatsumi had passed with flying colors.
But perhaps, more preparation is needed before performing another assassination.
He will talk to Najenda about this when they returned.
Tatsumi may not be the strongest, but Leone was thoroughly impressed with how well he carried himself against the Imperial Fist bodyguard.
He clearly new the basics of hand-to-hand combat. And he knew how to release himself from a chokehold.
But seeing him in action, by himself, against all of those odds...It was so surreal.
Seeing him so composed against everything that has come to him was something she could only admire, yet an uncanny feeling she's had hadn't left her throughout.
Holding him like she was right now sort of alleviated this sense. He seemed like a pretty laidback dude.
But still, she was very glad to have been able to see him in action.
Everything was making so much sense to her now. But if what she had concluded was true, then Leone couldn't possible comprehend how someone could be like this.
It seemed like everything he did was...him.
The way he talks, they way he walks, the way he kills, the ease of it. His disguises, his tactics, and his really weird methods of killing. It seems like everything Tatsumi had done throughout this mission...
It was in his nature.
Like a Lion hunting a Gazelle. Or a danger-beast attacking a carriage of people. It's just what they do.
But she could sense them thought, because her instincts could sense those emotional modes. She could sense their malicious auras.
She can't sense Tatsumi's...because he doesn't seem to have any.
It's like he was bred to be like this.
It sounded so weird, almost unbelievable. She's never felt this way about anyone before. Not even Akame, who was trained from a young age to be a ruthless killer.
Tatsumi was something else. And she couldn't hope to comprehend his nature.
It bothered her.
Leone always told herself that she was destined to die as an assassin. That she'll die on the battlefield, by some unknown, stronger foe. She'll die a killer and a murderer.
But to die without seeing it coming. Without notice. Without a clear method. To not be able to predict the murderer out to get you, let alone sense them...
…
…
…
It made her realize the multitude of ways she could be tricked. And a multitude of ways she could die.
It made her very uncomfortable.
