Matt and Foggy stumbled out of the car that had been taking them and the rest of the guys from the office all day. Foggy seemed to be worse off than Matt. Matt was definitely a little drunk from the day's festivities but Foggy was having problems standing completely upright. Matt waved off the car as he slung Foggy's arm around his shoulders, trying to contain his laughter as Foggy nearly knocked him over as they walked upstairs together.
"Hey Fogs?" Matt asked as he readjusted Foggy's less than cooperative form. "If pleases the court, may I ask you a few questions?"
Foggy lazily lifted his head. "Of course, Matty. You may proceed, Counselor," he slurred.
"Can you tell me whose bachelor party we were just at?"
Foggy smiled as he patted Matt's shoulder. "Yours, buddy. My best friend is getting married."
Matt laughed as Foggy gave his answer. Foggy was really drunk. "Fogs, can you tell me why I'm helping you up the stairs?"
"You're stronger than me, Matty," Foggy slurred out.
"You're not wrong there," Matt confirmed. Foggy was really drunk. "You do remember that I'm blind, right?"
"Course I do, buddy. But you've got like magic powers that help you."
"Man, those last few shots really did you in," Matt sighed. "I don't have magic powers...everything else just works better." Matt sighed with relief at the sight of the elevator once they were inside the building. Foggy was getting hard to carry. "I'm still wondering how we went to my bachelor party and you ended up more drunk than me and I'm dragging your ass home."
"Mystery of the universe, I guess," Foggy laughed as he attempted to knock on their own apartment door.
"Foggy, don't do that. It's late and you'll wake Jen," Matt scolded gently as he unlocked the door and shoved Foggy in the direction of the bathroom. "Think you can manage in there and make it to bed or do I need to help you there?"
Foggy took a good two minutes to think about it before he responded and shooed Matt off. "I got it...mostly. You got a beautiful woman waiting for you."
Matt was about to ask again but Foggy made a clear point to close the bathroom door in his face. Matt turned and slipped quietly into his bedroom, closing the door with as little noise as possible so as not to wake Jen. He undressed down to his boxers and slipped into bed beside her, reaching out to find Jen so he could snuggle close to her.
Matt was surprised when his fingers found Jen. He was met with soft silk and lace so sheer that he could feel her skin like nothing was there instead of the t-shirt and pajama shorts she usually slept in. He ran his fingers delicately over her side, wanting more of this precious treasure.
Jen stirred under Matt's feather light touches and immediately captured his lips in a breathtaking kiss. "Hi Handsome," she whispered. "I wanted to surprise you."
Matt's hand continued to roam over Jen and the deliciously short silk nightgown she was wearing. "What's this?" he asked as he let his hand slip past her hip and up underneath the tiny piece of silk.
"Present," Jen teased as she pressed herself against Matt and kissed him again.
A present that Matt definitely wanted to play with. "And who do I have to thank for such a gift?" he whispered seductively in her ear as he made quick work of ditching his boxers.
Jen giggled as Matt shifted her on to her back and started placing kisses down her neck and shoulder, moving the spaghetti strap out of the way with his nose. "Nikki," she gasped out. "There's at least four more to go with it."
"I bet my mother loved that one."
"Oh she did. It was my mother that feigned shock and surprise," Jen exclaimed with laughter. "Your mom asked if one of them was red."
Jen woke far earlier than she wanted to the next morning. She kissed Matt's eyes gently and slipped out of bed to let him sleep more. Pulling on a t-shirt and yoga pants, Jen crept out to the living room to take Gizmo for his morning walk.
As Gizmo munched on his morning kibble, Jen sorted through the myriad of gifts she received at her shower yesterday while sipping her morning coffee. There was a wine cooler and a bar set and high-quality alcohol to go with both. There were various spa certificates, dinners out and weekend getaways. One envelope attached to new luggage remained unopened from Pepper Potts because it came with specific instructions to open it with Matt. The gifts that stood out the most were those that came from Mrs. Nelson, Maggie and her own mom.
Mrs. Nelson gave her a cookbook with all the Nelson family recipes with plenty of space to add more and fancy new cookware to upgrade the old handed down pots and pans that Matt and Foggy had started with. It was no secret that Foggy's mom treated Matt as if he were one of her own, just like Maggie did with Foggy. She also knew well both of them ate very well.
Elaine Walters and Maggie Murdock were a bit more sentimental with their gifts and they definitely worked together on them.
Elaine had a beautiful frame made that could hold their wedding photo and a heart shaped bottle for unity sand. It had six bottles with it. On one side was Jen - sand from Malibu's beaches, purple and green sand for her favorite colors and a bottle of water from the Pacific Ocean. The other side was for Matt - sand from Coney Island, red and black sand for his favorite colors and water from the Atlantic Ocean.
Maggie started with a deep, wooden shadow box to display mementos from the wedding. Next, were two delicate handkerchiefs made from Irish linen and lace- one unadorned and one embroidered. In the center was MATTHEW & JENNIFER and their wedding date in blue. In the corners were green shamrocks, silver bells and gold horseshoes. Last was a red satin sash, the belt from Jack Murdock's boxing robe, with a memory charm with his picture wrapped up inside of it and instructions to give it to Matt on their wedding day. Maggie found a way for Matt's dad to be part of their wedding.
The bedroom door opened up and a yawning Matt staggered out in his boxers. "Good morning, Beautiful. You're up early," he said in sleep worn voice as he gave her a kiss and sat next to her at their kitchen table.
"I couldn't sleep," Jen replied as she returned his kiss and got up to get him a cup of coffee.
"Something on your mind?" Matt asked with concern as he gratefully accepted the coffee.
"Nothing that serious," Jen said as she tried to ease Matt's mind. "There was just one gift I didn't open yesterday because I was instructed to open it with you. I'm just excited."
"Well, I'm here now so let's open it."
Jen opened the envelope on top of the luggage. Inside, there were two copies of a letter - one in Braille, hotel reservations and a reloadable debit card. Jen passed the Braille copy to Matt.
Matt briefly ran his fingers over the paper and stopped. "I'm not awake enough to focus on this yet," he admitted.
"I got you. Don't worry," Jen laughed as she started to read. "Dear Rocky and Gidget, I'm told congratulations are in order. I was talking with Brucie and he told me that you two didn't have a honeymoon planned other than taking time off. That didn't sit right with me at all. So, with Pepper's and Bruce's guidance, you have been gifted with an all-expenses paid trip to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, no passport required. You've got a private villa with a private pool on the beach and access to all the resort amenities. As for everything else, that's on me too...food, shopping, spa, excursions, etc. Brucie also mentioned how Matt gets air sick on long flights. Who wouldn't on commercial? So, I'm hoping my private jet can help with that and a personal driver on the island. My congrats again and see you at the wedding. Signed, Tony, Pepper and Bruce."
"Did I just hear that correctly? Did Tony Stark just give us a honeymoon on him?" Matt asked.
"Sounds like it," Jen said, still processing what she had just read.
"Also sounds like we're going to Stark Tower to say thank you."
After the confrontation at Landman and Zack where Matt and Foggy threw down the literal gauntlet, Mrs. Cardenas' case became really quiet as they played the waiting game on whether the landlord would see reason and step up or would they step up and take it to the DA. While they waited, Matt and Foggy were back to making a dent in their other clients ' cases - wills, power of attorney, health proxies, and small claims. All vitally important but not nearly as exciting.
Mackey was known for being a patient man and going well past the extra mile for his clients. His patience ran out when his clients obviously needed help and he was being jerked around by an arrogant asshole. Mackey waited three days before he dropped his evidence on the landlord in the DA's lap and added that his office would be glad to help. Once it was in the DA's hands, it was a waiting game until they assigned someone to the case and they reached out.
Matt and Foggy kept themselves busy by going over a proposed settlement for a discrimination case they were representing. They were trying to decide if this lowball offer was even worth mentioning to their client or if scaring them with a possible court battle would get their heads out of their ass to come up with something more suitable. The phone ringing was a welcome distraction.
Matt picked up the phone faster than Foggy this time. A stupid little game they played, slowest one to answer the phone bought lunch on Friday. "Matthew Murdock."
"Good afternoon, Mr. Murdock," the receptionist greeted him warmly. "Miss Walters is here to see you."
A smile bloomed on Matt's face. "Please send her up." Matt hung up the phone and turned to Foggy. "Jen's here. Please tell me I didn't forget something."
"You're asking me this?" Foggy laughed. "Buddy, which one of us is more likely to forget something important?"
"If it deals with a case, neither of us," Matt started. "If it deals with something like an anniversary, I'm going to say you."
"Objection!"
"Sustained," Jen laughed as she opened the door. "You're both equally horrible with that."
Matt stood up from his desk to greet her, sliding his arms around her waist as he pulled her in for a kiss. "This is an unexpected and pleasant surprise."
"I had an appointment over here and I was hoping that if it got done early enough, maybe Mackey would let me steal you away for lunch," Jen said with a big smile as she wrapped her arms around Matt's neck.
"I like this plan. Who's the appointment with?"
Mackey appeared in the doorway with a smile on his face. "I was told you were here early, Miss Walters."
Jen smiled. "Him actually...and you two."
"Nelson, grab the Cardenas/Toomey files. Murdock, be a gentleman and escort your bride to be to the conference room," Mackey laughed as he headed back down the hallway.
Matt took a hold of Jen's hand and fell behind Foggy. "What's going on? Did you plan this?" he whispered.
Jen ran her fingers over his knuckles with her free hand. "I'll explain everything in a minute."
Matt pulled out a chair for Jen at the conference table before he took his own seat next to Foggy.
"Miss Walters, the floor is yours. Please tell them what you told me," Mackey stated.
"Mr. Toomey was arrested yesterday afternoon after failing to not only respond to you but also his own lawyers and the DA's office about the issues you brought forth. He's being arraigned tomorrow morning. I'm one of the prosecutors assigned to the case," Jen explained.
"Doesn't that create a conflict of interest with us?" Matt asked.
"I brought that up to my boss and he actually said that it was most fortunate and not a concern. In light of the fact that it was this office that brought the issue forward, you did most of the discovery work for us. You are still the representation for the tenants and they have the right to have you present if they are questioned. The DA is hoping the judge will address both the criminal and civil charges simultaneously and kill two birds with one stone."
"What's the DA offering?" Foggy asked.
"If Toomey pleads guilty, he's on the hook for all necessary repairs to bring the buildings up to code on top of a couple of hundred thousand in fines in violations. He'll also get about five years' probation. If he pleads not guilty and he's convicted, he's looking at all that plus jail time. Damages awarded to the tenants will be determined by the jury," Jen replied. "The DA wants this to be fast tracked so he's requesting a trial date within the month."
"There's no concern about the date coming up?" Matt asked knowing full well that the date of their wedding and honeymoon were coming up quick.
"That's why I'm one of the team."
"What more does the DA need from us? We're here to help," Mackey asked.
Jen looked at the files on the table. "Let's start with this and I'll let you know."
Late Saturday morning, two weeks before the wedding, Rocco and Dugario knocked on Matt's door. They told Foggy to grab Matt's gear and to follow them down to the gym as each of them took a hold of one of Matt's arms. Foggy had known this was coming because Fogwell had informed him as Matt's Best Man of this tradition among Fogwell's boxers. Jen, however, had NOT been informed. She was quickly about to open her mouth in protest when Rocco stopped her.
"Jenny, I get it but we have our orders. We promise to return him tomorrow, mostly in one piece. Fogwell says to talk to Maggie and she can fill in the rest but for now, your guy here has an appointment to keep," Rocco explained before he told Matt to blow a kiss to his bride before he and Dugario yanked him downstairs.
Jen was quick to head to the third floor once Matt and Foggy had entered the elevator. She was a little impatient when she knocked on Maggie's door. When it opened, Maggie barely got out a greeting before Jen interrupted.
"I was just informed by Rocco and Dugario as they kidnapped Matt with Foggy as their accomplice that Fogwell said I needed to talk to you. Could you please tell me what is going on?"
Maggie sighed and smiled as she invited Jen inside. "I was wondering when they were going to do this. Come in, dear. I'll explain everything."
Jen followed Maggie inside and took a seat at the kitchen table while Maggie got her a glass of iced tea.
"So, what did Rocco tell you?" Maggie asked as she sat down across from Jen with her own drink.
"He told Foggy to get Matt's gear and that they'd bring him back tomorrow, mostly in one piece. Please tell me what is going on," Jen pleaded.
"It's an old tradition when one of the boxers in the gym gets married. They send him off with a bang," Maggie replied reassuringly. "It's pretty much a night of fights and drinking."
"Why wasn't I told of this?"
Maggie laughed. "Part of the tradition. They don't want the bride interrupting or getting on their case so the other wives fill her in."
"Getting on their case?" Jen questioned.
"When they return Matt tomorrow, he will be exhausted and probably a little hung over. He's going to probably be pretty banged up and need a good deal of TLC. If they have done anything other than cuts and bruises that won't heal up in a few days, you are completely justified to take it to Fogwell himself and give him a thorough piece of your mind."
"And you know this how?"
Maggie smiled and sipped her tea. "Because I did."
Once the guys had returned with Matt and Foggy, the gym door was locked behind them. This was a private celebration. A makeshift bar had been set up on the table Matt used to do his homework at.
"Tape his hands, boys. Matty's got a long night ahead of him," Fogwell called out from the center of the ring.
"What's going on?" Matt asked.
Fogwell took a sip from the beer in his hand. "Time honored tradition, Matty. When one of my guys is about to walk down the aisle, we need to send him off right with a night of celebration and ritual combat if you may. He who is about to be wed can make any challenge and must accept all challengers. We used to do this much closer to the wedding but then we ran the risk of dealing with an angry fiancée if we mangled her man up too much and we really don't want to deal with the intended missus."
"Especially not Matt's girl," one of the guys calls from the corner. "She's just as scary in a courtroom as Matt is."
"And her cousin is one of the Avengers," Foggy added.
"When was the last time you had to deal with an angry bride?" Matt asked as he tested the strength of the tape on his knuckles.
"Margaret Grace Murdock," Rocco said from the corner of the ring, sitting backwards on a folding chair with a beer in his hand.
"My mother?" Matt repeated in a bit of disbelief.
Rocco nodded. "You got it, Matty. Your dad and I were going a few rounds and I popped him good square in the nose. Gave him two shiners and a gushing busted nose. It was a work of art. Jack didn't care much that he looked like a raccoon but your mom sure as hell did. That Irish temper of hers was lit up when she stormed in here ready to rip each one of us a new asshole. I would rather face off against Jack, God rest his soul, when he was pissed as hell and raging like a devil than standing anywhere near Maggie when she got like that. She lit into us so badly that none of us EVER wanted to deal with an angry wife again."
Matt couldn't help but laugh. His mom was barely over five foot but he had been at the receiving end of her temper so he definitely understood. "So, where do we start?"
"Your choice, kiddo. You're the groom," Fogwell said.
Matt nodded and walked over to the table and poured a shot of Scotch. He held the glass up towards his father's poster on the wall before knocking it back. "Well, I might as well keep with family tradition," he said with a devilish, shit eating grin. "It's time for the Devil to meet the Godfather. Whaddya say, Rocco? Murdock versus Baldonelli, round two?"
Rocco put down his beer and picked up his mouthpiece. "I say it would be an absolute genuine pleasure to knock you on your ass."
