The Parent Trap
Chapter 6
Some Lucky Kids
When Carlos tries to think about way back before he was a big boy, he found that it was hard to do so. He couldn't remember being smaller, couldn't remember anything, honestly. Waking up in that white room had been scary, but then his Mami and Papi appeared and suddenly, it he didn't care that he couldn't remember much, not when Mami and Papi where here to make things better!
His Papi was so tall too, with yellow hair, bright blue eyes that twinkled whenever he smiled and his was very strong too. He smelled like cookies and Carlos loved cookies! He dressed like the older kids they passed along in the shopping center they were in. Blue Jeans, flannel shirt, leather jack and boots. Carlos had told his Papi that he looked like a 'cool dude' and his Papi had laughed and thanked him, calling Carlos a 'cool dude,' too.
Carlos and Stephanie had spent most of their time in the shopping center on Diesel's shoulders, at the same time! Like Carlos said, his Papi was a strong cool dude!
"Watch your step, Diesel," Carlos turned to look at his Mami, who walked beside them, pushing a cart full of clothes and other things, just for him and Stephanie, "You should be careful with how much you carry around."
"Tch, Heidi, I'm not about to drop the kiddos," Carlos's Papi said, looking over to Heidi as she was checking things off from a list, "They're on the safest spot in the world."
"I was talking about your back, Diesel," Heidi said, looking over her reading glasses to peer at Diesel, "Between carrying the children around and also your ego, it must be strained."
"Oi!" Carlos really didn't know what his Mami meant but hearing his Papi's response and his Mami's small smile had him giggling with Stephanie, both children sharing a look with one another, "Hey now, your ego is bigger than mine!"
Carlos admired his Mami from his perch on his Papi's shoulders. The only way to describe his Mami is just by saying that she's extremely pretty. With her long black curly hair, and bright eyes that looked like honey to the pretty dress she was wearing today. Carlos could tell his Mami was super smart too! She had to be cause she knew how to speak German and she was teaching him and Stephanie a few words too. It was funny to watch their Mami sputter and make strange noises, when they were being very nice to her but she deserved all the niceness in the world, she was a great Mami! She made good food, he didn't really like taking showers or baths but this morning, when Mami helped him wash up, she had put some special soap in the bathtub and it caused thick colorful bubbles to float above his head and when he popped them, it was like colorful sparkles fell on his head! It was so much fun.
Carlos leaned against his Papi's head and smiled contently. He was so lucky to have such a nice Papi and Mami! He got two, he couldn't believe it!

Stephanie had the best parents in the world, the very best Mommy and Daddy in the world, no one else can say they had parents like Stephanie! Well, Carlos can but that doesn't count because they had the same parents, even though they weren't brother or sister. Stephanie and Carlos had asked their Mommy and Daddy, on the way to the big store, why weren't they brother and sister, if they had the same Mommy and Daddy?
"It just happened like that," Stephanie's Daddy had said, with a shrug and a smile as Mommy drove them in the very nice car, "It's okay, though, you two like one another and you're pretty darn cute kiddos."
Stephanie was satisfied with that answer, so was Carlos. It really didn't matter, as long as she had her Mommy and Daddy.
"Stephanie, grab as many socks and undergarments as you can, it doesn't matter what you pick, as long as they're breathable," Stephanie looked up at her Mommy, tilting her head.
"What does breathable mean?" She asked the woman, watching her pick through the things Carlos had chosen.
"It means pick out undergarments that will make is so you won't have a sweaty bottom," Her Mommy told her, making Stephanie giggled at the comment, "What, what's so funny?"
"You're so funny, Mommy!" Stephanie hugged the woman and ran off to go pick out cute socks and undies. She heard her Mommy sputter, "Me? What? What did I do?!"
She loved her Mommy. She was so very pretty, with her brown skin and black curly hair. It was just as curly as Stephanie's maybe even more so and it fell down her back in pretty, shiny waves. When Mommy had walked into her room that morning to wake up, Stephanie looked at her Mommy's curls, and then down to her frizzy curls and asked if she could have shiny curls like her Mommy. Her Mommy didn't even hesitate and after giving her a colorful bath and a thorough hair washing, and then setting Carlos in a colorful bath as well, Her Mommy had sat her on the a stool, in the bathroom and put thick gunk in her hair and brushed it gently. She had let Stephanie's curls airdry and when she slipped the purple clip in her hair, Stephanie had shiny curls just like her! The best Mommy ever. She was a good cook, she could speak German and it was fun to make funny noises come out of her mouth!
"That's is a lot of purple socks, kiddo," Stephanie's Daddy said, helping Stephanie dump her haul into the cart, "Did you get any other color?"
"I got red and blue and green and others too," Stephanie said, looking up at the man, "I want rainbows on my feet."
"I see-I see, good idea, kiddo, your feet will be the prettiest rainbow, I bet." Her Daddy said, before turning to Carlos, who was tossing black socks into the cart, "Hey kid, I bet you, you would look like a cool dude in blue."
Stephanie's Daddy was such a good Daddy. He was strong very strong. When they were in the sitting area of the shopping center, he had noticed that a giant stone vase had toppled over and people were waiting for help to arrive. He walked over to the vase, lifted it up, with ease, and then set it right. The people had looked so shocked as her Daddy shrugged and walked back over to the trio. Mommy had not been too happy and was giving him a talking to.
Stephanie liked the way her Daddy's eyes sparkled, whenever he spoke to them. She liked the way he smelled like cookies and how you would feel on winters night, wrapped up in a warm fuzzy blanket and sipping hot chocolate. He was so very nice and kind and he sounded like a bear, when he stretching and yawning.
Neither Mommy or Daddy said mean things to them or raised their voices at the children. Stephanie liked that a lot. Carlos told her, in the back of the car that he didn't know much before being six and he thought Stephanie had the same problem. Stephanie didn't remember a lot, but she did remember being a lot sad and bad feelings that came from someone who wasn't their Mommy or Daddy. Luckily for her, Mommy and Daddy were always around to make sure that bad feeling didn't stay for too long!
"We have a big haul here," Daddy said, looking down at the full cart, "Clothes for days, you know what, all this shopping had made me hungry, how about we go snag some lunch. I saw the food center has several places we can eat at."
Stephanie loved food just as much as she loved her Mommy and Daddy! "I want pizza!"
"It has been a while since we've been here," Her Mommy said, looking at the two carts, "Let's pay for our things, put them in the car and then we can enjoy lunch."
Yup, the best parents ever, Stephanie thought as Diesel scooped her and Carlos up on his shoulders one more, she was one lucky kid to have not just one super cool parent, she had two!

With their shopping tucked away in the car, the family of four found themselves in the food center, enjoying a well-deserved lunch. Diesel helped Carlos by cutting up the large spears of broccoli that sat in the middle of their table so that the boy could eat it with his currywurst. Heidi had been insistent that the children have something green with their meal, even going so far as to order a large serving of oven roasted broccoli for them to eat. The children hadn't kicked up much of a fuss, being told to eat greens with their meals, and it wasn't so bad, because Diesel had speared a some broccoli and ate it, saying, "Taste pretty darn good, kiddos. Mommy choose some good icky greens."
"Broccoli and pizza," Stephanie said, licking sauce from her mouth, "It tastes good!"
"Currywurst and broccoli is better," Carlos argued, looking at Stephanie, waving a sliced bratwurst in the air, "You should try it."
Diesel let the children have their little argument, content on eating his burger and drinking his beer. He looked over to Heidi, who was eating fish, just fish, a plateful of it. He swore he heard a noise of contentment come from her mouth as she chewed on a piece of salmon. He gave Heidi a pointed look and said, "Where's your greens, Missy?"
"Hmm?" Heidi looked up from her fish and looked over to Diesel, a scowl morphing on her face, "What greens?"
The man pointed to the bowl of broccoli and said, "You too, Heidi, you need to eat some green things too."
Diesel swore Heidi's hackles stood on end but she composed herself and said, "I ate greens this morning, on my eggs, I think I'm fine."
"You can't sit here and not eat any greens, while we eat them, nope, come on Heidi," Diesel said pushing the bowl closer to Heidi, "Eat some greens."
"You can't be big and strong without them," Carlos said, his face serious, once again, "Mami, you gotta eat your greens."
"Yeah, if we gotta eat them, so do you," Stephanie said, nodding her head, "It's only fair."
"Only fair? Growing?" Heidi looked at the three and then to the bowl, "But it's-" she paused as closed her mouth because she was not about to whine like a child, "Hnn," she stabbed a broccoli spear and stuffed it in her mouth, chewing it quickly and swallowing it, "See, I'm done!"
"You need to eat more," Diesel said, making Heidi's eyes cut in displeasure, "Come on, two more…"
The children and Diesel managed to get Heidi to eat two more broccoli spears, before she quickly ate more fish and drank her soda. She gave them all dirty looks and said, in a low voice, "I don't see why I need to eat these greens, I am not growing anymore!"
"Gotta set a good example for the kids, Mommy," Diesel teased her, making Heidi's eyebrow twitch slightly, "Right…?"
"I suppose…you are right," Heidi said, as she looked to Carlos and Stephanie, who were beaming at her and patting her hand, "How can I be a good example if I don't eat my greens."
"We're proud Mommy, you ate your greens," Stephanie said, beaming at Heidi, "You're a big girl now, see we'll eat our greens too."
"That's right, Mami, now you can get dessert too," Carlos said, nodding his head, "We gotta eat our greens to get dessert."
"They're right," Diesel said wagging his finger, "No ice cream, cakes or cookies, if you don't eat your greens."
"Don't push it," Heidi hissed to Diesel as she chugged more soda, "I know where you live."
"Yeah, with you!" Diesel winked at Heidi and then turned to the kids, "She's a silly Mommy, isn't she?"
"Yeah, but she's our silly Mami," Carlos said, nodding his head, "And you're our silly Papi."
"Silly Monster Daddy," Stephanie waved a slice of pizza in the air, "And silly Mommy Mommy."
Heidi's face was neutral but her eyes widened slightly, as Diesel pushed the thick slice of chocolate cake to her. She pushed her empty plate away and proceeded to demolish the cake, enjoying every bite, as she did. Stephanie and Carlos looked to one another giggling as their Daddy made weird faces at their Mommy, who was so into her cake, she missed it. They could feel their Daddy's surprised joy as he watched the cake being eaten.
Well that's weird, isn't it? Why would watching Mommy eat her cake make him so surprised and happy at the same time?
TBC..
I wonder what's going on in Trenton right now...?
