A/N: This is by far my longest chapter I've ever written. I would really appreciate any comments in regards to how this fic is going so far so I can know what I'm doing great on and what needs work. Last chapter was just the warmup, but this one is easily going to take a long time for you all to read. I can't promise I won't write chapters as stacked as this one, but I feel like it's necessary so we can accomplish a lot and not ring up the chapter total higher than it should be. Anyway, here's Chapter 11! Enjoy and be sure to share your thoughts when you're done!
Chapter 11
?/?
"...So you will not require our assistance? Is that correct?" It was Margaret who spoke to an unnamed guest.
"..."
"Very well. In that case, there is nothing more to be said." Now it was Igor who spoke to them. "As for your presence here... This room is ordinarily only accessible to those bound by a contract. You are Fated to refine your power. You will most definitely require our assistance… eventually.
Until we meet again… farewell."
The person they both were speaking to would get up and exit, leaving the two Residents alone in the Velvet Room. The long nosed man would chuckle in amusement and intrigue.
"Most intriguing."
"Are you certain about this? Our domain is indivisible from the destiny of our guests. Nothing meaningless happens in this room… Which can only mean that the fate of our visitor just now will be…"
"Margaret." All Igor spoke was her name, and the one who rules over power would cease her tirade.
"Pardon… I spoke out of turn. We are only allowed to watch over and assist those guests who are bound by the terms of the contract."
"...Indeed."
The elegant woman of absolute strength giggled in amusement. "So… the young man Souji Seta is tied to our recent guest's fate. I wonder what fate… or rather, encounter will await him. And not just them… but a future guest as well. That man, Souji Seta… He never ceases to amaze. Can he do it one more time?"
07/22
The sun had unfortunately set on this amazing Sunday. Souji Seta, the Leader of the Investigation Team, had seen everyone off; all, save one. This person he was seeing home by himself.
"It's been way too long… I'm sorry it took so long for us to have a moment like this."
"It's okay, Souji-kun. We kind of made it hard for that to happen so soon." Yukiko's smile beamed, even in the dark.
"Still… I'm glad to be back home."
"Mhm… Welcome home." She grasped his hand, his own reciprocating her feelings with his moderately firm grip. If not for them walking… she would be likely leaning on him the whole way through.
"Let me guess… You told Nanako when I would be coming here, didn't you?" He looked at her from the side, and she dropped any chance of hiding that fact, since it was just the two of them.
"Well.. she insisted I tell her when I knew for sure… Haha, I hope that was fine."
"Oh, it's no trouble. I didn't think she would hug me harder than when I left the first time, but I'll be fine." That was no hug, that was a charging tackle. But it's fine with him.
"I know, I saw it all…" She giggled as she recalled that moment. "How long will you be here?"
"Until the end of July. That was the deal with my mother."
"Deal?"
"She calls it a stipulation; a condition to my allowing of being able to come here." She doesn't need to know of Osamu, his father's wall that he tried to impose on him. "She wants to spend more time with me… reconnect with me."
"Oh! That's good!" Yukiko's body sprung up. "I recall you saying your relationship wasn't the best with her… or your father. Are things finally smoothing over?"
"...With her, it is. And that's all that matters right now." His tone froze up a bit; he doesn't want to trouble her with him. "I'm focusing on them one at a time. She's… much easier to deal with."
'Oh…" She sensed unease in her boyfriend's attitude. Does he mean what he says? His logic is reasonable, but…
"Sorry, I didn't mean to stress you out. How are things at the Inn?" He pulled her in closer to ease her worries, a blush streaks by her face.
"S-Souji-kun… I'm fine. And things are going well." She was caught off guard by his somewhat bold maneuver. "Mother and Father will be hoping to see you still, but I know you can win them over."
"Right…" Here he thought he already had. Perhaps this is just a formality. "Well, I'll see if we can go see them in a couple of days." They were getting closer to the bus stop. Only a block or so away.
"Mm…" Her grip got a bit tighter. She didn't want to tell him about the incident in regards to the Ichijo family. Especially since it wasn't his friend's fault at all. "It's nothing for like, m-marriage or anything, I think they just want to see how serious you are for me."
"R-Right…" Even he was not ready for that. He barely just turned eighteen! "Yosuke asked to speak to me tomorrow, and then Rise wants to see me as well. So I think I'll have my hands full for the day."
"Mm, that's okay. Naoto-kun wishes to see me while I am working, so it's fine."
"Maybe we can see each other near the evening? Even if it's only for a bit…"
"Yeah. That's fine with me. Nanako will love that." Her voice cooed out in assurance. At this point, taking even ten minutes to see each other was fine. They'll have more time later on. She made sure to free up her schedule.
They would reach the bus stop; the vehicle in question was likely going to appear any minute now.
"Hey, do let me know when you're done. I'll let you know when I finish speaking with them as well."
"Mhm… of course." The sound of an engine was heard as the bus was starting to come into the distance. Before it got closer, she threw herself onto her beloved, clinging onto him and giving him the best kiss he's had in… gods, he doesn't know, or care at this point. Of course the smooth operator embraced her back and returned it tenfold. This moment felt like days were passing them by, but they did have to let go… they knew this already; and both would pull back, hands now holding on another's. "Good night, Souji-kun."
"Good night, Yukiko. I'll see you again soon."
07/24
Soon, they shall meet again; but for now, business was at hand for both of them. First, in the morning, Yosuke was to meet up with Souji at Junes since he had an afternoon shift starting during the lunch rush. It was currently 11AM as Souji met him inside the cooled area inside the megastore. Specifically by the front where Souji would sometimes spot Adachi slacking. Even in the late morning, the Inaba heat rivaled that of a Texas morning, hot and somewhat humid.
"Thanks for meeting me here, man. I know you just got back, but there's something I wanted to tell you that's important."
"It's no trouble, Yosuke. That's what partners are for."
"Yeah, man," Yosuke couldn't help but crack a smile, his head tilting down to hide it. He shook it off quickly as the matter was somewhat dire. "This is not the ideal way to start a conversation, but... are you sure you want me to cut to the heart of the matter?"
"You know I prefer it that way, Yosuke; no BS."
'Right… that's just your style." Yosuke shrugged, taking a moment to calm himself while Souji waited for him patiently, wondering how serious this might be. Was it work issues? Surely he won't ask him to cover some shifts while he's here. The store is now starting to hit its stride with the change in culture.
"...Chie and I… are going through a rough spot."
"What? What happened…!?" His tone remained hushed, as this was a public setting.
"Yeah… it's no one's fault; well, not anyone we know of…"
"Yosuke… are you two…?"
"Broken up? Nah, we're not that far down the hole... But it's hard to talk to each other after what happened back in May."
"May…? You don't mean what happened inside the TV?"
"Yeah… it was that."
"Don't you both know what you heard isn't what they actually meant? It was Labrys' Shadow who messed with our senses." Souji turned, facing Yosuke who kept facing forward.
"Yeah; we know. But… some of the things we heard… hit hard. Like, I can only tell you what 'she' told me, but it made me really think about the past."
"Can you tell me?"
"Yeah… of course." Yosuke would begin to recount his perspective, insisting he needs to consult Chie for her side as her point of view was understandably different then his own. He would cite some lines she told him before their fight began.
"All I've been to you is some joke to sexualize and mock! When you signed us all up, you could not say a single thing about what made me stand out among the girls. I'm your girlfriend and you can't stick up for me…? What am I to you…?You always looked down on me, always interested in pretty girls like Yukiko or Ebihara… why was I chosen after they were both taken? Is it because I was the only one in your league…?"
He recalled those harsh words and told them to his partner as best he could. Souji could sense something metaphorical was lodged in Yosuke's throat, as if he fought just to speak the words in earnest.
"Yosuke… You know they're not true, right?"
"I… I don't know, man. When I really think about it… 'she' was onto something. I don't know how that shadow did it, but it really pulled up stuff from our memories. Didn't you and Yukiko share harsh words too?"
"Yeah. We addressed it, and we moved past it."
"Well of course you did, dude. We're not like you... You two are the perfect couple. We can't be like..." Was that jealousy in his tone?
"Yosuke… we've argued before. And we don't always agree on everything."
"When's the last time you argued then?"
"...The day after we saved Nanako."
Yosuke's throat would tighten up; he should have realized that would be what pushed them.
"That day… she and I argued because I blamed myself for what happened. And sometimes, I still do. But I remember the question she asked me… 'What do you still have?' And I still have all of you. That was my answer to her."
"Bro, I'm sorry…"
"It's okay, Yosuke. I understand."
"Guess I'm still a bit jealous of you… that's on me."
"What, you wanna fight it out right here?" Souji would joke, with the most conniving glance and grin.
"C'mon, man, I'd get my ass beat by my dad afterwards! The cameras are right behind us."
"Hah, I know. Feeling better, though?"
"Just a bit. I don't know what to do…" Yosuke's head shook with uncertainty, his hands on his hips now.
"Well, do you want this to keep going?"
"Of course I do, man!"
"Have you exhausted every option? Have you tried talking about this with her?"
"I've tried to bring it up, but she says she doesn't know where to begin."
"...Then perhaps Yukiko or I will need to talk to her as well."
"Dude, she might get upset if you say you know."
"Well, then she probably told Yukiko. Does anyone else know?"
"Well… I've only told Teddie, and he insists he kept it a secret. But I think they have a feeling."
"Then I'll trust Chie will do the right thing. If not, then you need to make a choice; let go or try and hash things out. It might take time, but it's worth it as long as you get some resolution."
"Yeah… you're right." Yosuke's posture straightened back out, now his body leaned a bit forward as he observed traffic. "Alright, I'll ask her about it soon. I dunno when, but… it will happen."
"Atta boy. Say, why don't we get some early lunch before you clock in? I'll cover for you."
"Nah, man. I'll treat you this time. It's been too long." Yosuke laughs to himself, Souji following suit as well. No point in arguing over this. The rest of their time together should be spent on smaller, lighter topics. It'll be easier for Yosuke especially.
At 1PM, Yukiko had someone see her first. It was Naoto, her Detective friend who had come to visit the aspiring Manager of the Amagi Inn. The veteran maid showed Naoto to her friend's room, so they may discuss topics alone and in private. Kasai had also brought them both tea before leaving the two to themselves. Yukiko was in her light blue Kimono while Naoto wore her newer summer clothes, a sky blue button up instead of the white from yesterday.
"Naoto-kun, I'm glad to see you more comfortable in clothes like those."
"Yes. It took a bit of convincing myself, but I want to make my own image of a Woman Detective. If my sex doesn't meet the ideal image… then I'll make one for myself." Naoto spoke softly, yet determination lingered with her words.
"Mhm, that's good. You're still settling into it, yes? I recall you wore your normal clothes when you returned from the city."
"Ah, yes. It will take some getting used to, but we have plenty of time for that." Their conversation was going well, as they had been conversing for about an hour already.
"I can understand that. We'll support you every step of the way, no matter what you do."
"Thank you, Yukiko-senpai; your words mean a great deal to me." To be around such supportive friends… was all she needed to continue with her path in life that she was building as she walked.
"I forgot to mention; Masato-kun wanted to speak to me as well when he leaves, and I promised him as well, so I hope you don't mind waiting a bit when that time comes. I should have mentioned it to you when you asked yesterday, but…"
"It's no trouble. I have a matter with Kanji-kun later, so it fits. Do not worry yourself with it."
Anyone else would have teased Naoto on the spot. But she can be assured that Yukiko would never do such a thing… right?
"Oh, that's sweet. I'm so glad to see you getting along more these days." Yukiko giggled, her hand covering her lips.
"Yukiko-senpai, you don't mean anything nefarious by that, do you?"
"Hm? Of course not, Naoto-kun. Are you two not good friends now?"
"...Oh." She feared the worst over nothing. "My apologies; usually Rise-chan would tease me over something like that. Sometimes even Senpai would… She seems to think I would be a 'good pair' with Kanji-kun."
"Oh, I meant no offense. I think you two get along well, and there's nothing wrong with that, right?"
"Right. My apologies for that reaction." She bowed a bit forward.
"It's okay. Does… the idea of a relationship put you off, Naoto-kun?" She asked with general intrigue, her hands smoothing over her hair.
"Well… it's not that I'm against it. I'm just… not sure about… anything." She shook her head, trying to shift topics. "Anyway…! May I ask something a bit off topic?"
"Sure. What did you wish to ask?"
"That Masato-san… are you on good terms with him?"
"Hm? I am; he's been a great help amongst the cooking staff, and a good teacher for me. I've learned how to use my new smartphone well thanks to him; and he also takes time after work to teach me how to cook better." With Souji not here most of the time, he is the next best teacher. The older chefs would simply show her and not let her practice as much as she likes.
"Ah, I see. I recently was with him, Yosuke-senpai, and a few others last month. I was curious how you all got acquainted with him." She and Teddie were the only ones who did not meet him until that day.
"Ooh, now I see. Were you concerned about him?"
"I wouldn't say that, but… it is strange that a young man at his age is working at such an establishment like yours."
"Oh, I can see why you are reacting that way, Naoto-kun. My Father was the one who hired him."
"...I thought your Mother was the one in charge of the inn?" Naoto's ears perked up, eyes focused in on this circumstance.
"She does. But my Father sometimes hires people in her place. Especially when it comes to men because they typically don't work up front like we do."
"Ah, now I understand."
"I don't know the details, but he insisted we trust him and he has not let us down. The Head Chef claims he's grasped the food we serve in no time with little struggle."
"Hm, that takes skill, especially at one his age…" She can't shake this feeling that something isn't adding up.
"Father brought him here during May, hiring him all the way back in Tokyo."
Now that was suspicious. "...I see. And your mother knew of this?"
"Mm, she had just recovered before then, so my Father took some of the burden since some staff left from the incident in April. …It was a very rough time."
"I see… Do you not find it strange the method of how he was hired? Neither of you knew of it until he was already here."
"At first, I was a bit uncertain, but I trust my Father…" This tone of suspicion rubbed Yukiko the wrong way. "...Naoto-kun, do you feel something is amiss with Masato-kun?"
"...If I'm being honest, I am." Lying to Yukiko would be harmful and a fruitless endeavor. Yukiko was much sharper than she lets on. "These circumstances seem unorthodox to me. I do not doubt his character, but something is off."
Yukiko listened intently, her eyes closing as she was unsure how to process this feeling Naoto had. It was justified, as Naoto was the last to meet him, also being the group's skeptic; but it was always for good intentions. She can't scold her for this. That is uncalled for.
"Naoto-kun; Masato-kun has been a great person to me and all of our friends. I understand why it may seem unusual to you, but I've not seen anything that leads to serious concern. I trust him like I do the rest of our staff… and I trust him as a friend."
"My apologies, Yukiko-senpai; I meant no disrespect." She may as well come clean with what she witnessed. "There was something I saw that sparked all this concern… May I share it with you?"
"Of course." Yukiko gave a slow, but powerful nod. Naoto would recant the story she saw for herself and then what Rise informed her, with the Priestess nodding and letting her finish before any questions could be posed. Once Naoto finished with a heavy sigh following up, Yukiko would ponder for a moment before speaking her first conclusion on the matter.
"That is… I feel bad for Rise-chan. We should have done better as friends to pay attention to her well-being." Yukiko's tone was trailing, thinking about what Rise must have felt in that moment.
"I spoke a similar opinion, but it was good Masato-san was there, regardless of how I feel. I've read reports about how they can put someone in dangerous positions…"
"And you were concerned he was responsible for hurting her initially?"
"Yes. I had no prior context, so it was why I first asked her about Masato-san and now you in regards to his character."
"I see… my opinion still stands, however. In fact, I think it is now more assured that he is a great person. I owe him my gratitude."
"Yes… I think I must agree with you on that." Yukiko smiled at Naoto's shifting opinion, now turning for the better. Regardless, Naoto was still bothered by this suspicious fact. If she only knew Yukiko's father had connections with the Kirijo Group, maybe she'd continue the trail.
The two would continue their conversation, but devolving to more trivial matters since the two don't speak alone as often as they like.
At around the same time, Rise would come to meet her favorite Senpai at Junes. She had another day of practice knocked out, but thankfully she caught the train leaving at 2PM and was now entering the Megastore, with her Leader waiting for her on the 2nd floor. When she exited, she saw him sitting by the wall, a bench placed adjacent to the Elevator a few feet away.
"Ah, Senpai!" Her hair was still up with it being a work day and all, and she was wearing her orange dress.
"Rise; good to see you again." She quick-stepped over to sit by his side; a little too close actually.
"Are you happy to be back home, Senpai?" She had a big smile on her face, like she just saw him for the first time in months… even though they all had that party yesterday.
"Of course, it's where all of you are."
"Ahh, that's so nice of you to say!" She cooed with bright enthusiasm that rivaled Nanako.
"So, what was it that you wanted to tell me? It sounded important with that expression you gave me last night."
"Oh… right." Her tone came back down to earth, her head tilted; where to begin… He doesn't know anything in regards to what happened. Best not to worry him about her condition in May.
"Senpai… how did you know when you liked Yukiko-senpai?" Straight to the point; this girl can be good at evading and cutting into the heart of the matter on a whim.
"Why do you want to know that? It's not a problem to ask, but it's a bit strange to inquire about so suddenly." Especially when to him, this could have been asked over the phone.
"Oh, um… I was… a bit curious because of something that's been happening while you were gone."
"Hm… I see." So this was just her way of settling into the subject. "...Well, I can't tell you exactly when it happened, but I think she fell for me before I felt the same way for her. It took only a few months… and we got together in July, just after you joined the team."
So he was interested in her in that short of a time window like her own situation. That's good to know; so she isn't weird after all.
"Well, Senpai… I haven't told the others yet, but this is something else that… is different from what I wanted to tell you." She began informing him about what Inoue told her, about leaving around the same time as Souji himself will leave back to Tokyo for the big event in September… the end of July.
"You plan to tell everyone?"
"Yeah, but I still haven't been told the exact day. I heard a rumor that serious work on the LMB Festival begins on the thirty-first. So I may leave a day or two before that."
"I see. I'll be leaving around that time as well."
"Ooh, maybe we can leave together! I think Naoto-kun has more work too so we can totally make a trip out of it." She giggled, only somewhat joking about it.
"That would be one entertaining trip back home…" His eyes close as he ponders that scenario, a gesture similar to Naoto when she finds something humorous. This calming moment helped ease Rise as she transitioned back to the heart of the matter.
"Well, I told Masato-kun about it… we've been hanging out for a while. Since May, actually…" She still didn't want to worry Souji about the initial moment that got them closer. "Normally, I ask him out to play or just chat and unwind… but after I told him I would be leaving, he asked to speak to me and we agreed to meet up tomorrow. He said it was important…"
Now he gets it. She's interpreting that response in a certain way. There's only one potential outcome that she could presume it to be.
"You think he likes you?"
"Mm… what else could it be, then?" She nodded, her feet kicking into the ground.
"And is that a problem? Are you not interested in him?" He tried to infer why she sounds so down about this, but this ran deeper than mere infatuation like he saw with her before.
"Um…." Her face looked a touch too nervous. She needed to answer honestly; like how Masato did when the going got tough.
"I don't know… I'm not like, liking him or loving him; but I'm not against the idea…"
"I see…" Does he spell it out for her? No, he should trust her to figure this out. For now, he will aid her in sorting out her jumbled feelings. "Well, let's play out that scenario; if that's what he tells you, what will you do about it?"
"I… don't know." She looked down, her mind scrambling for an answer.
"You know there's a chance this may not be what he wishes to tell you, right? Perhaps it's something else that is also personal."
"Yeah, I might just be overthinking it."
"Well, how do you feel about him? Do you like being around him?" Souji's body would shift, as did his method of helping her sort this out.
"I do! He's been really supportive of me, and he's been a great friend. We banter, and he's very fun to tease sometimes." She giggled, her face beaming brightly once she began explaining about her times with him to Souji. "We go to the arcade, I take him to this nice cafe in Okina… it's never dull. He has this… aura that makes me feel safe. Like I can talk about anything with him." Now this was something he didn't expect to hear. Masato always came across as casual to a fault. But he continued to listen to her speak all the details she wanted to divulge, learning aspects of his friend that he didn't think might be there. Goes to show they never talked as much as he preferred. "He doesn't see me as Risette, but as Rise Kujikawa. He sees me… for me; like you all do."
He smiles, feeling relieved she's doing so well, with support from an unlikely person.
"Rise… why not ask him yourself?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well… when you had a thing for me, you didn't exactly hide it." He was convinced that she was interested in Masato; in some way or form. This just had her slowly feeling it compared to her spur of the moment with Souji himself. "You're concerned for his feelings and if they even exist, but… when I hear you talk about Masato-san, you sound so… happy."
"Y-You think…?"
"Rise; it's not about what I think. But I believe you might know what you want to do already."
She pondered on his thoughts, organizing her own. …Yeah, she was more open, but it was to respect Masato's boundaries.
"Hm…" Her head would look away for a moment before turning back to face her Senpai. "Yeah. I think I know, but… is it okay to ask someone out just because you're interested? I like him… but everyone always talks about asking the one you really really like or love outright, so I just wasn't sure…"
"Rise, there's nothing wrong with asking someone out of interest. You of all people should know love doesn't always have to be at first sight like in the movies."
"Hahaha…. You're right." She covered her lips, feeling like she should have sorted this out herself and thus, found it humorous. "Thanks, Senpai. You were the first guy I fell for, so I wasn't exactly sure if that was the right way. Or, I guess there is no right way now, is there?"
"Now you're starting to learn." His reassuring smile gave her courage; what else would you expect from their Fearless Leader?
"Then tomorrow, I'll ask him out. Maybe we can get our first date before I leave." She joked halfheartedly with a giggle afterward, as a part of her meant what she said.
"I hope he's ready for the Storm…"
"Storm? What's that supposed to mean, Senpai!?" She pouted, hands pushing against him playfully. Their afternoon would continue in humorous fashion, as the Idol psyched herself up for the big day tomorrow.
As that was happening, Yukiko had already seen Naoto off, with the Heiress meeting the person she promised to meet today. The man of the hour, Masato Yoshida, who just finished his shift for today, had arrived to where she and him always chatted, in front of the garden.
"Thanks for seeing me here, Yukiko-san. I hope I wasn't troubling."
"Mm, it's no trouble, Masato-kun." Of course what was lingering in Yukiko's mind was what Naoto said. She could get more details herself, but should she? "So, what seems to be troubling you? It's not work, is it?"
"No no, of course not; I would bring that up to you much sooner or your parents." He shook his head vehemently. "This is more of a personal request."
"I see."
"It's about something between me and Rise-chan."
"Oh…!" This is… not how she expected this to turn out. A very ironic twist in the conversation. "What seems to be the problem, Masato-kun? Is she too much?"
"Too much? I wouldn't say that. She's fun to be around, even if her teasing is a bit… excessive." Yukiko giggled at his expense when he finished his sentence.
"Yes, she tends to do that a lot. Chie calls her dangerous for that."
"I can see that now." He shook his head with a small chuckle. "She told me she's going to be leaving soon."
"Leave?" Yukiko quickly cut him off, this situation puzzling her. He began to elaborate on what Rise told him over text messages from that night she first told of her inevitable departure.
"Hm, I'm surprised she didn't tell us yesterday."
"Perhaps she didn't want to sour the mood. I think she told me Souji-san was returning yesterday."
"Oh, yes! He's here for the week." Her tone was a bit more enthusiastic about that detail. "So, is this because you will miss her?"
"U-Uhm…"
"Hahaha, I'm just teasing you now." Gods, not her too. He can't fully refute it given their relationship as Boss and employee.
"But… why else would you be so concerned?"
"Well, I… do want to tell her something, but that's more between me and her…" He realized this implicated him further as he finished saying it. "It's not like that, I swear!"
"Hmhm… Masato-kun, it's okay. Just tell her what's on your mind. She trusts you enough to tell you first. Perhaps she feels the same way."
"Well…" And that was the heart of the problem. He needed to keep distance but now he wanted to close it and tell her the truth. He was not ready to tell Yukiko, as she in fact, might be the hardest person to come out towards; even harder than Rise.
"How will I know… if she does like me… like that?"
"Oh." She was sure now… there had to be some intrigue with him. "If she likes you like that… you'll know. Trust me, she won't skirt around the matter." Her tone was straightforward here.
"You sound like you know this too well."
"She used to like Souji-kun last year." That's one way to find out. From the woman who was dating said crush. "Don't worry; I think she's moved past it. You have your chance."
"Y-Yukiko-san! I… never said I-"
"Masato-kun, it's not good to lie to yourself; alongside to others who trust you." Her tone was sharp; she knew full well why it wasn't good to lie to yourself. She, alongside the others, knew that all too well.
"...Of course." And he knows lying hurts all too well. Even now, he wasn't being fully truthful to her or anyone.
"Well, do you plan to tell her?"
"Hm…. I asked to meet up tomorrow with her; to get a goodbye in as well as tell her something a bit more… personal that I can't tell you about… for now, at least."
"Oh? Well, I can understand that. You don't have to force yourself to share details that may be uncomfortable to speak of… if you're willing to tell her at least, I can live with that." It was good to trust others with your feelings, but it doesn't have to be everyone everywhere, all at once. Though it does surprise her that he wasn't willing to share with her since they've known each other longer, technically speaking. Perhaps their relationship is why that is the case.
"Thank you. I promise… I'll tell you one day when I'm ready. It's… very personal to me." So this wasn't to do with his feelings on Rise. But perhaps something to do with his own well being. An issue with the self? Better to do this, then in the TV World; it still kind of stings that some of her friends know about her Shadow, so she definitely understands why it's difficult telling someone of your own volition.
"Mhm. Then, I will look forward to that day; just let me know when you're ready to talk about it, Masato-kun." She bowed forward a bit, eyes closed.
"Y-Yukiko-san. I should be the one doing the bowing here. I feel like… I should tell you now, but… I'm just…"
"It's okay, Masato-kun. It's always hard telling people your deepest thoughts." Her tone sounds so relatable… just, what did she have to go through while everything happened? The report from Labrys might be a good indicator, but he wasn't sure if it was a recurring incident or a one time thing. It was an anomaly compared to what the S.O. members had to go through to get their Personas…
"...Thank you, Yukiko-san. I truly, truly am grateful for your kindness." He would bow in earnest.
"Oh, Masato-kun, it's okay. This is what friends do."
"Right… Friends…" But were they friends with him? Or just the self they see?
"Well, back to Rise-chan… do you plan to tell her?"
"...I think… I will; first I need Rise to hear that other matter first. And depending on how that goes, I'll speak the rest of what's in my heart."
"Rise-chan… should understand." He didn't say the honorific this time. That did not zip past her.
"I… am really appreciative towards her kindness. It's something I'm not used to…"
Yukiko's head cocked to the side, uncertain of what he was speaking of. His tone seemed slightly different as well.
"She said she'll miss me once she leaves. I… will miss her as well."
Yukiko smiled silently, already seeing the feelings between the two planted, but can they blossom?
"Did she say you mean a lot to her?"
"Ah-." He gasped at her question. That was… actually what she said after she stated she will miss him.
"Mhmhm, it's okay; you don't need to answer that." His face was the key to solving that problem.
"Yukiko-san… I want to be honest with you… I'm scared."
"Scared? What are you afraid of?"
"Well…" He wanted to say it, but his heart felt tight as he tried to think of where to begin… "I fear if I tell her… she'll think less of me."
"...Is this something dangerous?"
"N-No! It's nothing messed up or anything like that at all…! It's a more personal thing protruding to my past…" His hand waves up and down, as if trying to blow this away as if it was not that big of a concern.
"Oh, I understand now. Well, if it's nothing nefarious, then I believe as long as you speak earnestly, you can tell her and she will understand. As will I when that day comes for me as well." She attempted to reassure him of doubts she could not comprehend. That compassion was an amazing trait to possess; this must be what Souji sees in her. No wonder they're a great couple.
"Thank you, Yukiko-san. I'll do my best."
"I hope to hear good news from you then, Masato-kun. You two… do look a bit cute together." She giggled, knowing full well that was going to fluster him a bit.
"Y-Yukiko-san… she is pretty cute, that's for certain. I'm just not sure if I'm worthy of that."
"Oh, come now, you need confidence to win her over, Masato-kun." Now she sounded like his wingman.
"Haha, right; I need to be brave." He needed to be himself if he wanted to have a chance with her. His lonely heart for now felt better than a broken one. It was worth risking. If he's found out… it might break her heart, and make the rest of the team's close up and shun him. He needs to give his free will a chance.
"There you go!" Now, she had a chance to ask her question in regards to what Naoto said to her not too long ago… but, how to structure it?
A moment's worth of contemplation and she realized it was not worth asking. She could test his character here, but she trusts the young man fully. As both an employee… and now a friend. She can only give him the support and confidence he needs to ask the idol out.
"Oh, but… I do have one warning. I think you know what it is, however…"
"Do you mean her career?"
"Mm… you might not be able to see her once she leaves. Inaba is quiet, but… if anything happens while she is there, it might bring unwanted eyes when she returns." She recalled the buzzards who called themselves the paparazzi in Inaba last year. Not just because of Yukiko herself in April, but especially during June when Rise went on hiatus. It was a discomforting sight and experience. "You will need to be ready for that. Your actions will hurt her dream if this relationship happens and is spotted by any unwanted eyes."
"..." It was something he considered, but Yukiko's growing social understanding was shining through here, as she spoke the truth. If he was to go against the mission and pursue a deeper bond… he would have to stay out of her life for her career's sake. It's not an easy thing to do, after all; easier said than done. "I… haven't considered it as much as I should have."
"It's understandable. That's not what anyone normally sees in a typical relationship." Despite Yukiko's status, her relationship with Souji was actually pretty normal upon a first glance. But dating Rise… it's not dating an everyday girl. This is an Idol. The Former Number One Idol in Japan, no less.
"I'll have to settle that by myself then. That's not something I can simply resolve here and now."
"Of course. It's quite the hurdle." She wondered if this is how Souji felt when he asked her out.
"Thanks a lot, Yukiko-san. I think I know what I should do." His eyes close and he bows in front of her. This helped him tear through some of his walls around his spirit. It was a start.
"It's no trouble. But, I believe I need to help everyone else. Are you ready to go?"
"Yes. I'll be ready for tomorrow. Thank you again."
"Anytime, Masato-kun. I just hope you tell me the rest of what's on your mind one day."
"I will. I promise, you will know someday; and hopefully that day will come soon." He was truly grateful that she understood some of his predicament. But he will need to tell them all sooner, rather than later.
07/24
During the afternoon hours, there was much going on. Souji was enjoying time with Yukiko, the two talking comfortably in his home with Nanako, Rise and Masato were preparing to meet one another, and Yosuke was working the average summer shift in Junes, hot and at times, very hectic. He was trying to enjoy a drink in peace in the food court, when an older manager approached him. Oh great, who does he have to bail out and help this time?
"Um, Yosuke-kun, we don't have any events going on, yes?"
"Uh, not until next month. Why do you ask?" This was another manager, so how is he struggling to recall these important moments?"
"Well, you see there's some… cosplayers? I don't know what they are, but they're dressed bizarrely and we're not sure if they're serious or a potential security threat."
"Cosplayers?" They don't have Otaku themed events. Maybe in Okina, but he would have seen an ad for one already. "Do they seem dangerous?"
"Um, I'm not sure. But they spoke your name! So that's why I'm asking you instead of your father. Are they friends of yours?"
"Huh?" He doesn't have any friends who match that. Masato likes video games too, but he's never divulged any opinions on Anime before. "Uh, then take me to them. Where are they?"
"I asked them to wait by the entrance. They were loitering around deeper inside until I spotted them."
"Right… Well, let's see what this joke is all about…" Who could these people be? Yosuke tried to consider who fit these descriptors the Manager used. And he was never going to get it right with his thought process.
Meanwhile, under the Gazebo, Masato had just arrived with Rise already sitting under it. He stepped forth with more urgency, the heat no doubt feeling ugly right now. He was wearing a solid white tee shirt, a pattern of an eastern dragon adorned on the front. He had jean shorts that extended just past his kneecaps, and the same white shoes to complete the look. He looked ready for some pick up sports.
Rise was wearing her outfit that she wore for her Senpai's return, but her glasses were actually on until she spotted Masato off the corner of her eye. She aimed to look her best to win him over.
It was working. His eyes couldn't stop scanning her. The lighter colors really brought out her beauty. The vanilla covered pants, her lighter blouse that was almost transparent, and her halter top which really gave her chest some emphasis.
"Ah, Masato-kun! There you are!" She stood up immediately, a smile adorned her face that matched the afternoon sun's brightness.
"Rise…! Sorry I took so long. I hope I didn't keep you waiting. The summer here is brutal sometimes." He climbed the lone few steps, now only a few feet from her.
"It's okay! I just got here a minute or so ago. C'mon, sit!" She playfully yanked him by his arm to bring him closer and down onto the seat they would share.
"R-Rise!"
"C'mon! Let's talk!" She was in high spirits, eager to try and pose her question to him. She still wasn't one hundred percent certain if he held feelings for her, but she had to try! Worst he could say is no, after all!
On his end, he wanted to say the truth about his being here to her. It was time to put an end to illusions and seek what he wants for once. There can be a situation where he can uphold the mission while also being close with them. And close to her. He would come out to her, then anyone they could help convince easiest like Souji or Yosuke and then Yukiko was the hardest one to tell, but with Rise and maybe anyone else… he could do it. This was all in his head, but he really wanted to divulge the truth and put the walls down. He felt compelled to.
"Well, how are you, Rise?" Surely a bit of small talk will ease him into coming clean. No sense in starting out swinging hard to open their conversation up.
"I'm fine! …Actually, I'm a little nervous." Her tongue sticks out playfully, her hand behind her head.
"Sorry about that. I made this sound so serious." His voice stammered with a playful scoff.
"It's okay! I just… have something I want to tell you."
"I have some things I want to tell you as well."
"Heehee… I already know about that one, silly!" Her tone really was comforting to him. That optimism is such a wonderful thing in his mind.
"Well… I'm not sure who should go first."
"You make this sound like we're confessing something bad to one another!" She giggled, feeling like he was wound up too tight for his own good. "Well, you're not busy today, right?"
"No, I'm off today. Made sure of it yesterday."
"Yay! Same here! Well, I just did all my practicing in the morning." Her arms were shifting while straightened out, hands on her knees. "It's all good from here!"
She wasn't sure where to begin. And it's clear he was feeling the same. Gosh, this might get awkward soon. In her mind, she needed to get the ball rolling!
"So… there was something I wanted to ask about when you texted me that night… will you really miss me?" She opened up with a fastball of a question here.
"...Yeah. I will miss you when you leave." His eyes tilt to look into her own. "That's not a bad or weird thing, is it?"
"No! Not at all! It… makes me happy." She looked down, a meek smile forming from her lips. "I didn't think you liked being around me. I know I teased you a few times too far."
"Hm… I know you enjoyed it and didn't mean anything rude by it. I don't hold it against you."
"Masato-kun…! I might just start doing it again if you talk like that…"
"You might do it anyway, no matter what I said." A smile cracked from his attempt at being calmed. Yeah, that wasn't going to work here.
"Haha, I just might." Her hand covered her face as she laughed once more, softly and with a pinch of modesty. "You know, I… want to stay here still. I want to be an idol so I can make people feel strong, and be their strength. And now… I think I want to be your strength."
"I… that's really kind of you to say." And he didn't expect her resolve to run so deep. It was more than a simple career, it was part of a much bigger goal for her.
"Mm. You've made me feel strong too, you know? I want to return the favor." She would look him dead center into his eyes, a small hint of passion was in the back of her pupils. "You remember back in May… you were right here for me, when I felt alone, scared, and weak. You held my hand… just like this." Her left hand would be atop his right, next moving to hold it.
"R-Rise… are you…?"
"Teasing? No. I mean it, Masato-kun. I'm really grateful for what you did for me back then." Her tone sounded much more deeper compared to her usual, bubbly self. She was being upfront. "I sometimes remember it like it was yesterday. You being there, making me feel safe, promising to never leave my side… that's part of what I wanted to talk about with you."
"...Rise." His body felt tense from this bold action she took. It shook him harder than anything else she's said so far. "I want to tell you something as well." He needs to be brave. He needs to live. "I'm scared. I wanted to tell you something for a long time, but… I'm afraid that if I do… You may not want to be around me, or look at me the same way ever again." His feelings are laid bare for her to witness and analyze. It didn't take her even a second to come to a conclusion.
"Masato-kun." She kept that sharp focus into his green eyes. "Please, don't be afraid." She would stand, pulling him up to where they both were in each other's personal spaces, the bubbles pushing into one another. "Listen, you saw me at my lowest, and still, you've been here for me, and cared for me. If this is something that is hard to say, I'm so happy you trust me enough to even want to tell me." Her hands would grab each of his. This was such a taboo thing to do in a borderline public setting, especially among people who aren't dating, but it's clear to her he needs reassurance. Her warm hands will hold his like how it was back in May. It was time she returned the favor.
"Rise… thank you. I'm… so happy you mean that."
"Of course I mean it, silly. I wouldn't ever lie to you…" She looked down to see his hands. They weren't super big, but still, they felt comforting all the same.
Masato heard that word… "lie". He can't keep this going. He'll hurt her more. And everyone else too. No more. No more hurt. No more lying. It ends now.
"Masato-kun… I want to say something I think you need to hear…"
"That's funny. I was about the say the same thing." He wants to say the truth so badly… but his feelings want to come out first. He's breaking away from his plan. But for the first time, he's following his own heart.
"Haha… well, then why don't we say it at the same time?" She suggested such a dumb idea, not expecting him to go along with it. Her face was already flushing, recalling cheesy romance flicks.
"...Sure. Let's do it." It's happening. To both of them, it was gonna happen!
"W-Wha…? You're so… teehee… alright."
"Rise… no matter what happens next, can we… promise to be…?" He can't finish his thoughts, so she put the rest together herself.
"Mhm. Let's be good to each other no matter what."
"Thank you." His grip got a little tighter. Not enough to hurt Rise, but it was clear he was nervous. Their hearts were thumping like pistons, one pump after another.
"Masato-kun, I…"
"Rise, I…"
"...really–"
BEEPBEEP*BZZTBZZT*
Both of their phones went off simultaneously. The moment was thwarted by everyday life. At least, that's what it first seemed to be. Both would step back and pull their phones out, Masato with a surprised expression and Rise's was more puzzled as well as frustrated. Each would take some space away to answer it in discretion.
"Yosuke-senpai, what's up?"
"Hey, sorry if I'm bothering you while you're out practicing, but I kinda need to talk to you right now."
"...It's no trouble. What's up?" Of course Yosuke was the one to kill the moment. She can't spite him for this, as he likely did have an important reason to call over simply texting it. Masato seemed to be answering his own call, his face looking astonished and frustrated as well.
"It's… well, I gotta tell you in person. Come to Junes right away, okay? We gotta plan something serious."
"Serious? This isn't like some weird ploy or anything?"
"No. 'Not messing around here. I already called everyone else up. Souji is calling some of the others as well. I gotta get ready. I'll see you soon, okay?"
"Mm. I'll be there soon." She hung up immediately, Masato looking like he was finishing up his call as well; what happened with him, she can't help but wonder.
The two would approach each other, the mood completely killed at this point. What do they do…?
"Rise… everything alright? Sorry about that."
"Mm, it's okay. I should apologize too… I'm needed right now, so I have to go…" Her tone was weary, all hope sucked out like a vacuum just ran by her.
"Yeah, I got called in. I need to cover someone ASAP. So don't feel too bad about this, okay?"
"Mm… can we continue this another day?" Rise suggests, her eyes looking bright with some hope.
"...Of course. Whenever you have time, let me know and I'll come running."
"Thank you. Listen, Masato-kun… I'll be waiting for you too. I want to tell you something before I go back to Tokyo."
"Yeah. And I want to tell you what's been on my mind too." His smile tried to reassure her. Gods, maybe that small time cost them the moment! Both were wondering about what could be if they just said it outright! "Go ahead, Rise. I'll see you soon."
"Mhm! I'll see you soon… wait, can you do one more favor for me?" She had a face that was reminiscent of Yukiko's... surprise mischief.
"Yeah, sure. What do you-" Before he could even ask for elaboration, she clung to his arm like glue.
"Hm! I want you to walk me to Junes, silly! At least most of the way there." If her friends spotted them together like this… that would be awkward to explain. Deep within, a small part of her was hoping it might happen.
"R-Rise…!"
"Whaaat? You said you didn't mind it…" She gave him a needy pout, as if to further wedge him between a rock and a hard place.
A defeated sigh, he would line himself up properly beside her. "Fine. But I gotta go back to my place. Need to get on my bike to get to work as soon as possible."
"You got it. Gosh, I wish we would have a week where things don't get thrown all topsy-turvy."
"Yeah… you could say that again." He felt her grip around his arm tighten as he finished saying that.
"Less talky, more walky! Let's go!" She huffed, ready to pull him along by force if need be.
"Right. Let's get going, then." He would shake his head, defeated by her charm. Best escort her now and right, lest he risk upsetting her now. There was frustration in his mind, beating around with nowhere to go. Duty calls, however. And it seems she had her own problem. He was so close, after all. So close to telling her and eventually everyone else.
At Junes, there was a gathering at the rooftop, the Food court was busy enough and the group gathered at the biggest table was about to get their last Inaba resident coming on up.
"Hey, hope I didn't keep you all waiting!" Rise was the last to arrive.
"Rise-chan!" Teddie waved to her to come closer. "You won't believe who's here to visit!" Rise's pace hastened when she noticed two figures who stand out.
One had green hair in a braid, and the other was someone in a Vanilla colored trench coat.
"Fuuka-san! And is that…. Labrys!?"
"Heya, Rise-chan! It's been a while since I've seens you." Her Kansai accent was as strong as ever. Her weapon seemed out of sight, however.
"What's going on?"
"Rise, it seems something about what happened in May is why they're here. Let's all sit down and hear what they have to say." It was her Senpai who calmly acquired her attention.
"Oh, okay." She was confused, but also… something felt dense in a small part of her chest. Prior memories coming loose. But everyone is here this time. She knows she'll be fine.
First, Yosuke would talk; elaborating on how they appeared in the first place, and how managers were this close to getting the authorities involved with how Labrys' axe folded on her back.
"Geez, Labrys; you gotta know that your body kinda causes a scene. And Akihiko-san still wears… less than usual."
"Sorry 'bout that! I need to take my sister's advice more seriously from now on." It was hard to be mad at a polite, but brutally honest girl like Labrys! Especially when she's bowing like that.
"Wait… Akihiko-san? He's here?"
"Oh, yes." Fuuka was the next to speak. She was much more formal and soft spoken, yet she had a quiet resolve that reminded Souji of Yukiko in a way. "Akihiko-senpai had something to take care of, but he will catch up quickly. He's already aware of what we are about to tell you, so he insisted we start without him."
"Alright, then." Everyone was wearing their casual summer wear, yet the atmosphere felt too heavy for that kind of vibe. "Please, go ahead and tell us. We're all accounted for." Souji gave a firm nod to the two visitors.
"Very well. So…" Fuuka had her laptop open up, her screen lighting right after. "In May, Labrys was kidnapped by an unknown assailant as you all know." Her tone was much more serious now, as if she was speaking at a business meeting. "We still haven't found them, but there is something indicating that they may make a move soon." Everyone's eyes grew more alert, their attention clearly acquired by the Elder Priestess.
"We believe they may be back in Inaba again." Now this was big.
"I thought Mitsuru-san didn't want us to be involved?"
"Yes, about that…" Fuuka took a heavy sigh, then turned her laptop to show a modified version of a map of the corner of Japan that they live in. "Please take a good look at the map. Where we are has a spike in Shadow activity; as does Tokyo."
"Hmm… I assume Mitsuru-san is dealing with that, so her hands are tied, I take it?" Naoto pointed out.
"Correct, Naoto-kun. She has assembled her own team to check that out, including Aigis. She has assigned Labrys, Akihiko-senpai, and myself to come here to speak to you about this."
"Huh… but wait, isn't there a chance this might not be a real threat?" Chie realized, given that all the facts don't lead to a true definitive outcome that was likely to happen.
"Yes. For all we know, this can be a random anomaly. Or Mitsuru-senpai will find our target over there, and my group will simply head over as backup."
"Wait wait, how do you all fight Shadows?" Kanji pushed into the conversation. "Coulda sworn someone said you all didn't know about the TV World."
"Yeah, that's true. We didn't know until just before we tried it on that day. We have a different method…" Fuuka lifted a bag from the ground, opening it and pulling a box the size of a small jewelry case out. And inside were some rings. With some dulled gems in the center. "These rings can basically change the world around us and make those Shadows appear. It's a little complicated but all you need to know is that if you take these out of the box for longer than a minute, an effect of what we call the Dark Hour will begin." She snapped the case shut, not wanting to force an example of it right here, where innocent civilians weren't far off. She quickly stored it back in her bag after making sure the box was sealed.
"I apologize if that's a lot of information, but clarity is a good thing to have."
"It's no trouble, Fuuka-san." Souji offered to reassure her. "So you want us to help you just in case?"
"Yes. Although we are not sure since the culprit seemed to have a fixation on you all, but also on Mitsuru-senpai as well."
"...Everyone." He called for his friends' attention. "Are you all ready? We might have another case on our hands." They had already fought for peace, and someone was still threatening to ruin it. The team had no need for words now. If there is a threat that they can defeat now, then they will work together once more. A collective nod and shout of agreement rang, Fuuka and Labrys already knew their answer.
"This person dragged us all into it, kidnapped our friend, and harmed our new one… we are gladly willing to help you, Fuuka-san. They won't get away with messing with our own."
"Souji-kun…" Labrys was touched by his fierce compassion. This must be what Yukiko saw in him!
"Thank you. All of you." Another individual approached the table, this time, suited properly in a black suit and light colored tie.
"Sorry about the hold up... Got a bit carried away."
"Master!" Chie was ecstatic when she recognized that voice, turning to see Akihiko in the flesh.
"Akihiko-senpai! They have agreed to help us."
"Heh, that's good. Let's all get along well and fight hard." He definitely had a Boxer's bravado. "Sorry for being late, still. I had to check on something in the car. I'm good. Mind filling me in on what you've discussed so far?"
Before this moment, just minutes before Rise was the last to arrive…
"Okay, this is close enough." Rise begrudgingly let go of his arm after clinging onto it almost the entire walk through. She even made him take the long way to the Megastore.
"My pleasure…" He needs to go now, he's already late.
"Mm, thanks! I'll talk to you later, okay!" She waved him goodbye as she made a beeline for the entrance.
Masato would wave back for a few seconds before sensing someone else was around him.
"Hey, you're getting sharper."
"Akihiko!" Masato quickly turned and the two would exchange a high handshake, hands clasping with solid strength.
"It's been too long." Akihiko's grin was wide as it has been who knows how long since he last spoke to this Shadow Operative. It was he who called Masato when his moment got cut short. And it's also why he wanted to leave so bad. This wasn't a friendly reunion; there was business that needed to be discussed.
"Yeah. Call me Masato."
"Right. So, are you surprised to see me?"
"Of course, especially since you dropped in unannounced."
"Yeah, that's my bad. Lemme fill you in on what the situation is." He would share the same thing Fuuka plans to tell everyone, albeit with less elaboration as Masato is more than aware than the team is in terms of what the Shadow Operatives do and how they do it.
"I see… but there's a chance this could be all for nothing, right?"
"Yeah, but considering there's two growing surges of shadow activity. We have enough reason to believe something is up. It's highly unusual."
"But you said only Fuuka and Labrys are with you. That can't be enough."
"You're right. I'm in charge of the Operation, but we're going to recruit those who you kept tabs on."
"Wait, why!? I thought Mitsuru-san wanted them to stay out of this?" Masato cut off Akihiko almost immediately after he finished his last sentence.
"Given the severity of these activities… there wasn't much choice. And believe me, I had to argue it with her for a good while, too." He shrugged, dealing with Mitsuru in that kind of situation isn't something he likes doing. "But she caved in, and now I have Fuuka and Labrys asking for their support."
"And where does that leave me? I assume you didn't go out of your way just to tell me that."
"Well, I got you something." He reached into his front pocket, and pulled out what looks like a clip that looks like it could stick out of a pocket or fit in something really small. On the end opposite of where you snap it in place, there was a small, spherical shape with a dimmed red light. It was completely metallic, with a bright silver sheen. "Put this in your wallet. It's way more durable than it looks."
"What's this do?" Masato would pull out his blue wallet, opening it, but staring more at the clip.
"This is a tracker. Ever since what happened to Labrys, Fuuka spent time building these babies. It does one thing; it lets those monitoring them and the computer back at HQ know that you are still here. But if you go into the effect of the Dark Hour or you fall into that TV World, its signal will be lost and we will know you've gone missing. From there, we track your last known position and then we decide our next course of action afterwards. So keep this on you at all times. There's a chance the culprit may know who you are, so in case you're in danger, we'll have a fighting chance to rescue you."
"I see. Thanks, Akihiko." He places it at the end of one of the tight pockets, snapping his wallet shut and putting it back up.
"No prob. We all got one on us for ourselves, and both Labrys and Aigis have it installed on their very beings. Fuuka plans to give some to the others later. At the very least, everyone we know of will be able to be tracked in case this bastard tries that same trick. Fuuka picked up on this from that idol's testimony."
"Yeah. I recall reading that part in the report." He knew way more, too; thanks to Rise divulging details of the incident herself. Well, besides the parts she believed he would not comprehend. If only she knew.
"The plan is to enter tomorrow. Mitsuru's group and ours will enter at the same time. If we run into nothing, then we simply leave and report that to the other side."
"Sounds good. I hope one of you catches them."
"Hoping it's us. I want a proper crack at this person!" Akihiko slammed his fist into his palm, eager for a fight.
"Of course you would say that. You never turn tail when a fight is happening."
"Damn right. I have to keep getting stronger." Akihiko blinked, turning to see the time on his watch. "Sorry about this, but I think I need to go check on them. I'll come by tomorrow after the mission is over, and we can discuss getting you reassigned once this is all put to bed." He had a reassuring grin with a nod following. "Then I'm gonna personally see that you get a Persona. You have to be ready for the Evoker by now."
"Really!? Mitsuru-san is willing to try again?" Masato's eyes glow as his chance may be coming after all!
"Well… she wants you to keep doing your job, but I'm doing this on my own. Might even get Junpei to help us as well."
"Yeah? I'm ready, Akihiko! I want to actually join the fight and help!"
"That's the spirit, Masato! I'm dying to know how strong your Persona can become!"
"You just want another sparring partner, Akihiko." The two talked as if they were fast friends for a long time.
"Of course! Hoping these kids might be willing to try and spar once in a while too. I saw great potential in some of them."
"Right. Well, you should go then. I'm hoping to hear good things about this soon."
"Yeah, I'll be going. Take care until then, Masato." With a quick nod, he sprinted off to the Junes store, making training out of any little thing. That's so like him.
Back to the present time, Akihiko was seated alongside the rest and began weaving his plan to the team.
"Tomorrow, at Noon, we plan to go in at the same time as Mitsuru's group plans to. If we find nothing major, we can simply return back here and report our findings to HQ. It's a simple in and out recon mission. But if there is trouble, I hope you all have your gear for fighting. You're going to need it again. How are your Personas? You put any training in since the incident back in May?"
"Uh… it's been peaceful since then, so we haven't had a reason to go back and fight Shadows." Chie would shake her head, a forced meager laugh escaped her lips.
"Right, I had a feeling that was the case… Well, be ready to shake off that rust and learn fast. We don't know anything about how strong our target is. But considering they were able to pull all that stuff off; from the hijacking of a Plane, to kidnapping Labrys and one of your own, on top of that whole tournament… they have to be something fierce."
"Akihiko-san, we'll be ready. They made a big mistake in messing with one of our own. Even if you didn't come, as long as we knew they were around, we'd bring them in ourselves." Souji spoke with fierce resolve.
"Hah, that's the spirit. I can respect that; but it's best we work together since we have the same target." 'The enemy of my enemy is a friend', as the saying goes.
"Of course. So what else should we know?"
"Yeah, before I forget… Fuuka. Can you bring out the trackers?"
"Of course, Akihiko-senpai." Fuuka would once again reach into her bag, pulling out another box, containing eight of the same things Akihiko gave to Masato minutes ago.
"These are beacons. I made them myself." She started passing them to one after another, encouraging them to pass it further along until each of them had one for themselves. "They keep track of your general location and if you enter either the TV World or the Dark Hour I mentioned before, its signal will vanish and HQ will be aware of that, letting us know when and where you vanished so we can attempt to rescue you. All of our operatives have them now. Please place these in essentials you take with you everyday like a wallet or bag. Since the culprit isn't against kidnapping, this can help us be aware of someone going missing early on. I understand if you're concerned about these, but I can promise you, we mean no intrusion on your privacy and well-being. If we do catch them tomorrow, then you're free to return them to us."
"You think they're aware of your arrival?" Naoto inquired.
"I think so. It was like they wanted us to come, so perhaps this situation might be the same as before."
"Hm… what do you think, Senpai? Do you trust them?"
"I do. Mitsuru-san insisted we can and her actions make me believe in all of them." He nodded, before turning his focus to the agents. "We have a rule here, however. We never go in alone. And while you're here, I ask you to follow that. If we go in, we go in as a group. Being alone in that world is dangerous, even with the fog clear. You no doubt already know Shadows don't hesitate to attack Persona users like us."
"I understand. We have our time then… Tomorrow at noon, we will begin the operation. Is that alright with everyone?" Fuuka asked; an exclamation of agreement from the entire group was heard and it seems the plan is set! "Then, I think that's everything. Well, should we go back to the Hotel, Labrys, Akihiko-senpai?" She turned to her friends, to which Labrys would whine.
"Aww, but I wanna talk to'em some more! Do we gotta go right now?"
"Um…" Fuuka trailed as her tone felt unsure on what to do.
"Let her stay, Fuuka. I'll go and do some training until then." Akihiko was set on his plans.
"Ooh, can I train with you too, Master?" Chie still kept calling him that, it seems.
"Alright. Then take me to a good place to train until it's time to file the report!"
"Got it! Let me show you the way!" She jumped from her seat, as did Akihiko. The two would leave Junes almost immediately afterward.
"That guy's always wanting to get stronger." Labrys would comment.
"Labby-chan! Let's play until the sun sets!" Teddie wanted dibs, but others would step over him.
"Hell no! I wanna hang out with Labrys first!" Kanji would butt in next, but Yosuke stepped in afterward.
"No! I want to talk with Labrys!"
"Guys, that's enough! You're all sounding like kids." Souji scolded the boys, turning to Labrys. "Sorry about that, you've gotten pretty popular since you left."
The android was laughing to herself, it seems her desire to talk to all her new friends was beaten by their desire to speak to her!
"You guys crack me up!" She remarks, Yukiko now starting to laugh like a Hyena. Chie would be glad to not be here hearing that again for the tenth time this week.
"Are you guys always like this?" Fuuka asked, a smile on her own face.
"Yeah… they tend to do this a lot." Souji would shrug while the guys continue to argue over who gets to spend time with the android first, completely ignoring their leader's words.
"Haha, I can tell you all are really close friends."
"That, we sure are. You wouldn't believe it, but we were all strangers to one another a year ago, and it's like we've all been childhood friends since."
"Oh, trust me. I can believe that. My Senpai and I go back to our own high schools… where we had a somewhat similar situation to yours, fighting Shadows after school."
"Really?"
"Mhm, but that's a story for another time, maybe."
"Some of you all look so different on the outside, but on the inside, you haven't changed much at all!" A loud comment from Labrys was overheard, with Kanji snapping in irritation, taking it as a small shot to his current looks. She might have hit the nail on the head right there. Even Souji couldn't help but give off a laugh. This was the calm before the storm, because come tomorrow, the conflict from May was coming back to the forefront.
A/C: So much happening in this one day, it's absurd, but P4DAN kinda just crammed them into this spot. But now we have the debut of Akihiko! He's a more supportive friend of Masato, as is Junpei whenever he makes his appearance, albeit he won't be as recurring as Akihiko will be. Fuuka is also quite supportive of Masato, but that's always been her role. Labrys also makes her debut here! And eventually, she'll have her own major arc as well!
As for Masato and Rise... well, that was always planned. Did you think I was going to make it that easy for them? Hell no; this has the drama tag for a reason. Naoto's so close to the truth as well. If only she asked one more question. Speaking of couples, Chie and Yosuke have their problem now revealed at last! How will it be handled? Well, we'll learn later on during the Summer arc.
Today's musical reference is "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes. You know, the guys who also have that one song used as the infamous Jojo ending theme?
The next chapter is when the Mad Lad you've all been waiting for makes his triumphant first appearance against the Team! Get ready, because it's almost Showtime!
