I don't even know where to start. But yeah, this is the second.
Chapter 2 : That Girl
A clock isn't even there to let him know what time is it, he relying on news from tv, hoping it shows the time with little box on the corner off the screen. Not that he go out so often, he's out only few times in a week for food. His times spend by watching tv and reading newspaper he managed to stole. Living alone is harsh and he live on a place where he shouldn't be, is not that he want to go back into digital world either, he find this world rather more interesting than digital world he already familiar with. To increase his chance of survival, he start learn on how humans communicate with each other, it's the first barrier he need to overcome and when he got a slight grasp of it, the world around him changed. From finding food or just general stuff, but even with that he barely graze the depth of it.
Learning humans language itself easy at the first glance since he already communicate with those humans with digimon partner, but he start to knows that human use multiple language from the new, turning the task that easy at first into borderline impossible. But for now he can understand anything around him, that's good enough for someone who got no one to help. Then writing, it should be impossible for a digimon to learn alone but he use other method. In some news the human that present those story mention 'text' for other human that can't see, then he tried his best to interpret those words by matching the familiar words to the text. A dumb ways for him to learn poorly like that but what do he know, he's a digimon without partner or friends.
With that little knowledge, he venture outside sewers to get some decent humans food. His body is small, small enough to be compared to human's child. Not that it give him problem, instead he can go undetected almost all the time, lurking in the dark of night to steal some food.
Right now he sit on tree branch, looking at the shop nearby. He usually steals a piece of bread from there, just one or maybe two, but the last time he stole two breads, the shopkeeper aware ot it. After that he never steal more than one. Today though, a bad luck for him, the bread sold out and the shop about to close. With a deep sigh he turn into other place, still looking for food. When he arrived at destination, he spot a human that he knows very well. She stand few meters beside the place he targeted. This is bad, he thought.
There is two things he afraid right now, fear of hunger and death, but both feels almost the same for him. Looking from afar, he tried to confirm the human and his eyes is right. That girl is someone that he can say close to him for a reason, he knows her even though her appearance is changed, slightly bigger. Humans are growing differently, there is an age, some kind measurement for human in term of evolving.
There is multiple choice right now, either he go for it or call it a day or just find other places to steal. A though choice for him. Some part of him want to confront her, telling her that he's sorry, but that hope is just a hope. Last time he want to help her she denied it, that shouldn't be surprising but it's haunting him until now. While a part of him want to talk, the other half is scared that she will avenge her partner death and he still scared of death even though he believe that he deserve it. Now one of his fear start overwhelm the other, this time hunger took over his mind.
The snowy cold night slowly getting into him and with hunger filling his head he move step by step towards that shop, snatching a pack of instant ramen and flee. It's an easy one from what he thought, just take and run. After few minutes he managed to go back into branch he sit before, looking at the instant ramen he just steal. He know what the name is but it doesn't seems edible, it's hard and different from bread or fruit that he usually ate.
"hey!" A voice of humans can be heard and he started to panic, not that he knows if the human spot him, best case for him is it just human calling to each of their own, but he doesn't take any chance. When he about to go down, he slip from the branch thanks to the snow that melts under his warmer body. Even if he always land leg first this one is a problem as he doesn't put it the right way, he fall into the hard ground that covered in thin layer of snow, if it's thicker he would have been fine.
A sharp feeling of pain coming from his left leg but he keep going, thanks to fear and adrenaline he forcefully get up then make a run for his home. Each time his left leg take a step the pain growing, almost makes him scream. He want to scream but once again his fear take full control, from hunger into death now.
After about an hour, a sense of relief coming to him. He arrive at the wretched place he call home, a hell for others but a safe haven for him. Unfortunately his problem isn't stop there, when he start losing a sense of fear the adrenaline also start to worn off and what comes after is pain. Falling to the floor he scream in agony, grabbing his left leg. With no other choice he drag himself with hand to lean against the wall, finally getting some rest.
Opening a package of instant ramen, he take a bite and hate it immediately. Hard as rock with no flavour, there is another packaging inside of it, a smaller one. A strange powder soon coming out when he rip it, strange one since he never seen human eat something like that. "a little taste should be fine" His idea of trying new things quickly turn into regret as it turn out to be very salty. "what the fuck? Did human eat this shit?" Not a good day for him, but at least the hard rectangular food is edible, or so he thought.
Just when he get another bite to the instant ramen, he hear footsteps, a lot of it. The sewer always been a noisy place, filled with constant stream of water it that always bother him when he want to sleep, but he slowly adapt to it and trick his brain to think that those stream is kind of background noise. That way of thinking makes him more aware of his home, if someone throw a can an it's heading towards his home he can identify it dozen meters away. Now that it steps he quickly filter the stream noise and detect dangerous humans coming, possibly lot of them.
Digimon is far superior in physical abilities, no humans will doubt that when they meet one, but that doesn't mean that human will lose right from the get go. He has seen a lot of humans that can be said evil and dangerous, using any means to get what they want. Throw that aside, digimon also has weakness, they're not flawless as he initially thought.
There is no fight for him right now. Let alone his condition, he doesn't want to fight with or against human unless it's really necessary. Run away is the only choice right now yet he can't even get up, his left leg won't even move. It's not just pain that prevent him from doing that but his lack of energy playing bigger factor than that. "come on you stupid legs! Not now!" Unfortunately his body won't listen and stay still there.
Looking at his surroundings, there is nothing that really help him, not a single weapon he can use or even good defensive item. Only his make shift bed and tv is near him plus a blanket that right beside him, it's not like he can use humans weapons even if it's there anyway. In desperation he shoot his signature fireball into lights switch that shine his place, he only enough power for one fireball and doesn't really know how to turn it on later but survival come first.
Suddenly the step got faster but the numbers seems reduced yet more stable, he misheard some of the earlier noise. Fora moment it goes faster when he break the lights, then gradually slowed down but getting louder, indicating that his position is very close. Covering his mouth, he tried to control his breath, lowering his sounds as much as possible.
When he can assume his enemies just few meters away, he can hear low growl. "what the-!? did humans growl now? Why is it only one?" Question start popping in his mind as he getting more confused, his failure of identifying his enemies make the situation even worse. "did those humans sent that creature called animal? Are they friendly?" He almost smack himself, that last thought was very dumb. Why would a human be friendly to him? He's a monster, his body maybe small but still monsters.
"i lost the track! How did it vanish just like that?" A low tone of voice with growl struck fear into his mind, this is clearly not from human and who's voice is that makes him start guessing. Then he hear that someone sniffing, he want to think the otherwise but deep down he knows it's over. "I.. I can smell it, it's nearby! That thing is here! Use your phone, Quick!"
A flash of light coming from in front of him, shining the other side of sewers, despite losing hope he still trying his best to get through this. One of his hands slowly grab the blanket beside him, with trembling body he tried his best to curl up and tug himself below blanket. Still trying to cover his mouth and closing his eyes, his heart stopped when he can feel a flash of light from his closed eyes.
Fear. Desperation. Hope. The things that filled his mind fighting each other, trying to take over his mind completely. "I don't want to end like this! I don't want to die!" As much as he think he deserve it, he still fears death like many creature out there. "it's over, they found me. I can't even move and talking won't help either, please finish me quick" Just looking at his own condition, he knows better than anyone else, he just trying to prolong his life from his own fear of death. "please, give me another chance god! Or whoever that control this world, please!" Then there still two chances, either humans found him then treat him which is unlikely or for some bizarre reason he's not found out.
The flash of light shine him for a moment then point out at somewhere else, there is no sound of footstep yet but he got a huge relief, whoever that is probably shine other places first before leaving him. All he need to do is hold his voice down and wait until it's clear.
Sadly his relief only live shortly when he heard smaller foot steps coming to him, he can't feel any lights but the steps getting closer. Before he could grasp a better look at his own situation, the blanket pulled over.
