I wanted to built up for the end of third year chapter, and as such this chapter did take up more time than anticipated. Please forgive me.
Now, off with you and have fun reading this chapter. Until next time
The next few weeks were uneventful, at least for those who did not do their OWLs or NEWTs. Harry could feel the tension in the Gryffindor common room from the older students, who all were sleep deprived and still studied for their exams.
Harry looked over the announcements on the notice board this morning and checked it for the next date for the Hogsmeade visit. When he found it and saw that it was still two weeks away, he memorized the date and then waited for Ron, Neville and Hermione to go down to the Great Hall for dinner. He did not have to wait too long, as Hermione and Neville soon joined him by the notice board.
Harry looked at his dorm mate and asked him if Ron was still up in the dorm, even if dinner was soon to be served. Neville laughed, asking Harry if Ron was ever on time when he was alone. "I mean, if we would not walk with him to classes, I am unsure if he ever would be there on time." The three friends laughed and walked down the stairs towards the Great Hall.
As they ate their dinner, the topic of their conversation soon landed on the next Hogsmeade visit. As spring was just around the corner, the students were glad that it would become warmer before they would visit the village once more.
While they talked about where they wanted to visit this time, some owls delivered the evening post, mostly some letters from families who wanted to tell something important that happened today. To Harry's surprise, a brown owl landed in front of him, followed by Hedwig, and held its leg out.
"Well, hello, who might you be from? Want some chicken?" Harry asked the owl as he gave Hedwig some chicken, and he received a grateful hoot from the brown owl when he handed some over to it.
Opening the letter, he noticed the fine handwriting from his godfather.
Hey Harry,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. As for mine, I am finally released from St. Mungo's and am now looking for a home again.
As for the main reason why I'm writing you this letter besides informing you on my progress, I wanted to ask you if you could tell me the date for your Quidditch final with Ravenclaw, as I want to see it personally. This would also allow us to talk with each other afterwards, as I have some news that would interest you.
Your favorite godfather
Sirius
Harry folded the letter back up, having a big grin on his face. Grabbing a loose parchment out of his bag that he had brought with him as he wanted to go to the library after dinner; he wrote the date for his last match on it with a small note and fixed it to the leg of the brown owl.
Hedwig barked at him angrily, but Harry wrote another letter to Yen and Geralt and gave it to her. "Here girl, bring this to Yen please. She would like to know that Sirius wants to talk with me and maybe wants to organize something so that she can also be there. I wish you a good flight."
Hedwig spread her wings and flew up to leave the Great Hall, just behind the brown owl. She soon diverted from their common flight path and sped up. She was determined to bring the letter to Yen as fast as she could, so Harry would be happy with her and give her even more Bacon.
The next day in London, Sirius was walking through the streets of the city in search of a flat he could rent. He already had contacted a few landlords if he could look at the places published, but sometimes the best flats were not out in the open. As he walked through the city center, he wondered if the house on Grimmauld Place was still standing.
Deciding spontaneously to investigate this possibility, he walked into a dark alleyway and apparated close to the Leaky Cauldron to get to Diagon Alley. He would also take a small break at the Cauldron, as he wanted to talk with Tom a bit.
Later Sirius arrived at the entrance of Gringotts, as the goblin who oversaw the Black account should know if Grimmauld Place is still on the list of properties he now owns. He did not look at the list beforehand, as he only was released from St. Mungo's the day before. He was almost tempted to ask Ted to help him, but this was something that he had to work through himself with the goblins.
Walking over to the counter, Sirius asked if he could see his account manager. After showing his key that he had gotten back after the trial, he was led towards the goblin that oversaw his family account.
Boggrod was the account manager for the Black family for many decades, seeing multiple generations of Black becoming the head of house. When he heard a knock on his office door, he looked up from his papers that he was preparing to send to Lord Black. Calling out to the door, "Enter!" He was surprised when the door opened to see Lord Black was already standing there. "Ah, Lord Black, I was not expecting you to come this soon. I hope you do not mind waiting while I go and gatter the rest of the documents from the shelves? I was preparing some to be sent to you."
Sirius walked over to sit on one of the chairs. "No worries Boggrod, I do not have any other obligations today. If you could please show me the statements from the Black account while you gather the rest, that would be great."
Boggrod handed the papers over to Sirius before he walked to one of the cabinets to pull out the rest. Sirius was looking at all the balances and noted that Narcissa's trust vault was still being fed from the family vault; he would ask Ted if he could investigate that. Because if his cousin was not in control of the money taken from the trust vault. Sirius looked at the trusts rate of withdrawal over the years and had to wonder if Narcissa really used that amount of gold for herself , if not then Lucius Malfoy had much to explain. 'Seriously, if we find out that Malfoy used the gold to further his own investments without asking Narcissa, that would be a breach in the contract the Malfoys had signed when Lucius married Narcissa. Speaking of which, I must look over that too, but maybe after I talked with Harry about the situation. As my heir, it is also his decision what to do about this.' Sirius frowned as he thought of the future of House Black.
Boggrod was soon back behind his desk, with a much larger stack of papers for Sirius to look through. 'That will be a long day.' Looking up from the pile of paperwork Sirius brought up the reason for his unscheduled visit. "I presume in the pile is the list of properties I own?"
Boggrod nodded. "I imagine you are more familiar with the townhouse on Grimmauld Place, but fact is you own many other properties, including Black Manor, your family's ancestral home in Blackmoor."
This surprised Sirius as his mother always bragged in his youth that she lived in the ancestral home of the most Ancient and most Noble House of Black. Sirius grimaced at the thought of his mother. 'At least that old hag is dead, good riddance!'
In Kear Morhen, Dobby was working on the castle with his magic when he felt his name being called by his new mistress, at least new since he was in the service of the Malfoy family. Popping into Yen's bedroom, Dobby asked what he could do to help her. "Ah Dobby, thank you for coming so quickly. Could you bring me something to eat as well as ask Doctor Halsey if she could come in here and check me over? My daughter kicks a bit much inside my womb for it to be normal." Yen grimaced in pain as she rubbed her stomach.
Dobby nodded and snapped his fingers, summoning a small plate with sandwiches he had prepared beforehand for just this situation before popping to the door that led to Doctor Halsey's laboratory. He knew that he could not just popped in there as he was told that in this room was something that he should not know at all.
Knocking at the door, Dobby waited a moment before talking. "Madam Cathy, Mistress Yen be asking if you could go to her room and examine her; Mistress Yen be saying baby be kicking very hard and Mistress Yen be looking in pain. Dobby is sorry but Dobby must return to work on the castle,, so Dobby must take his leave now." He waited until he heard Catherine answering that she would be on her way.
Yen did not have to wait too long with her sandwiches when Catherine knocked on the door of her bedroom and entered it after Yen told her she could do so. "Catherine, thank you for coming. I think something is off with my daughter, even though I know that she kicks too hard to be normal." Yen rubbed the spot on her belly that was still sore from her daughter's kicks.
Catherine closed the distance between them and looked at her tablet, to which a scanning tool was attached that Catherine used to scan Yen. "Well, the good news is that your daughter is as healthy as a baby can be. But you are right, it seems that her kicks do a bit of damage to your ribs, nothing to worry about for now as it is only superficial and thanks to you being a sorceress and having accelerated healing like a Witcher; it will never become too great of a problem. As for the strength your unborn child shows, I think it has something to do with her inheriting the strength of a Witcher from Geralt. I would also think that she will be quicker than other children her age, we must watch her closely for a while until we are sure that there will be no complication with her abilities."
Yen was surprised by the care Catherine showed, wondering if there was more than Catherine had shown until now. "Catherine, I never asked you about your past, and I never wanted to but now I am curious. Were you a mother once?"
Catherine placed the tablet down on the table, sitting down on the chair right next to it with a sigh. "Yes, I also had a daughter. But I was not a motherly type and left her with her father just after she was born. I heard that later she also became a captain of a warship during our war with the Covenant and died in the line of duty, just like her father before her. But watching Harry grow up, I wonder what would have happened if I had chosen a different path and left the Spartan program to care for her when she was just a baby. Maybe creating Cortana back then was like a coping mechanism I was not aware of until I heard that she had died fighting for something that she thought was the only way that humanity could survive." Catherine smiled sadly as she brought up all those past memories.
The two women sat in the room in silence until Yen winced again. "Ah, there she is, kicking as if the world depends on it. She will be a lively child, that much is clear." Yen chuckled as she rubbed her sore stomach.
Catherine grinned, taking the tablet back into her hand and stood back up to scan Yen again. While Catherine waited for the results of the scan, the woman heard a small tap by the window and looked over to see Hedwig waiting there with a letter on her leg.
Yen used her magic to open the window and soon Hedwig was gliding over to the bedpost next to Yen. Hooting softly, Hedwig held her leg out so Yen could take the letter and read it.
Good morning Yen,
Sirius has sent me a letter, asking me when the last Quidditch match is this year. As it is early in June, I was wondering if you could also come, because he wants to speak with me after the match and you could also be interested in it.
I hope you are well
Love you
Harry
Yen closed the letter and took another piece of parchment from her nightstand to write an answer.
Hello Harry,
I would like to come, but just in case Katrina does need more attention during that time I will ask Triss to to stand in for my place. I am sure that Keira would love to see Hogwarts personally, but she will do that soon enough..
Love you too
Yen
Yen was about to tie the letter to Hedwig's leg, but took it back and told Hedwig to wait until the next day and take a break. "I am sure that Sarina would not mind you being up there and eating your fill."
Hedwig hooted her thanks and flew over the owlery to eat something, she would return the next day to Yen and take the letter then to Harry. Flying back and forth was not as taxing as it could be, but she was hungry even after all the bacon she did eat in Hogwarts.
The next few days flew by again with nothing noteworthy happening, well except that Pigwidgeon was getting more attention every day when he flew around Ron's head and hooting loudly. Harry guessed that the small owl wanted to deliver a letter to someone, but Ron was never the great letter writer and had nothing to send away.
Lavender asked Ron once if she could borrow his owl for a letter to her parents, to which Ron gladly accepted. "A few days without this mad bird will do us good. Hey Harry, what are you doing in Hogsmeade this weekend? Would you like to come with me to Zonko's? I heard they have some new products that we could use to prank others. Like a nose biting teacup."
Harry, who was walking beside Ron to the next class, thought about his answer to Ron. On one hand, a nose biting teacup sounds funny, on the other hand there was much more still to discover in Hogsmeade that they had not seen yet. He was pulled out of his thoughts by Hermione, who was huffing at the suggestion to only visit the joke shop next to the sweets shop and the pub.
Hermione was in her lecture mode. "Really Ron, there are so many more shops in Hogsmeade that deserve our attention. And before you say that you would not walk into a bookstore, maybe you should go to the pet-store and ask the shopkeeper if they could help you with Pigwidgeon. I mean even you must have noticed that he is completely different to a rat or another owl for that matter. Such a small owl should not eat as much as a bigger owl."
Ron grumbled, hating being lectured like that. He had sent Pigwidgeon to the owlery, he was sure that his owl would take care of itself. But waking up every morning by the hooting and flapping of wings was getting on his nerves. Maybe it was a good idea to ask in a pet shop how he could discipline his over energetic bird. Until now he just gives his owl the same bacon Harry gave Hedwig when she was coming to visit him.
Meanwhile, Harry also thought that a visit in the pet-shop was a good idea, as he was thinking of getting something for Cindy. Hopefully the shopkeeper of said store had nothing against snakes as pets. He knew that some people kept them as pets in the muggle side world, but he wondered if he could use the same methods the muggles used to care for his snake, as it was clearly magical.
Finally arriving at the Potions classroom, Ron was getting grumpy again when he saw the Slytherins already waiting. Harry saw Daphne and Tracey standing close to the door, looking peeved about something Malfoy was telling just a few feet away. Luckily, Professor Snape just opened the door and ordered them into the room.
The day for the Hogsmeade visit arrived. Many older students used this event to go on a date with their partner, as the temperature was getting warmer now.
Harry still wondered why some of his peers were still blushing up a storm every time they would be close to the other gender. He waited in the Hogwarts' courtyard for Ron and Hermione to show up, so they could go to Hogsmeade together. While he waited, Susan saw him and walked over to him with Hannah and Neville just behind her. "Hey Harry, nice to see you today. Would you accompany me to Hogsmeade? I heard from a small café that would be nice to visit."
Harry looked at Susan, thinking about it. "Well, I would have to ask Ron and Hermione if they would be okay with it, as I have already planned the visit with them. But you could come with us, and we can then together visit that café?"
Susan nodded with a smile, thinking that this could be a good opportunity to talk with Harry while Ron would distract Hermione. She did not have to wait long until Hermione and Ron came around the corner of the courtyard. Susan could see that Hermoine was just a little bit annoyed that Ron was accompanying them, but that was something they could handle.
On the other side of the courtyard, Malfoy was watching Harry and his friends with growing anger. His father was also very angry with him, as his father let out his anger on his son by asking him about much more information on what happens in Hogwarts. That Black was now free as well made Draco realize that his chances to become the head of house Black was now almost non-existent, causing him to lose his temper much more quickly.. Even Crabbe and Goyle kept their distance from Draco, just so that they would not be targeted by a random spell.
Just a moment later, Harry walked past Malfoy and saw the glare from him. Malfoy noticed that Harry was watching him and sneered. "Well, look who it is, the great Harry Potter. Still hanging out with blood traitors and mudbloods I see."
"Watch your tongue, Malfoy. I know that Sirius is now officially the head of ouse Black, and as such he could cut every connection your family has with his house, and that would put you in a very bad spot for the future. So please keep quiet and leave us be, or else I will write to Sirius about what is going on." Harry just walked away after his not so subtle threat towards Malfoy, followed by his friends who looked flabbergasted at the reaction from Harry towards Malfoy.
When they sat down in the carriage that took them to Hogsmeade, the topic soon changed again to the normal discussions they had during the day. Mostly, on how far they were with their homework. Something that Ron still was scoffing at. "We have free time now, can we not talk about school just for once? I do not want to think about the homework we have to do for Potions, to be honest."
Harry looked over to Ron with a curious look. "You mean the Potions essay that we should hand over on Monday? I already finished it last week." Harry still wondered how Ron could be this lazy when it comes to homework.
Ron huffed and crossed his arms over his chest. It seemed that he finally accepted that he should do his homework when they returned back to the castle. They were soon in Hogsmeade and left the carriage that brought them there.
Walking through the street, Harry asked some residents if they could lead them to the pet shop. Getting pointed towards the other end of the village, Harry walked with his friends through the village and soon they found themselves in front of a house with a big, fenced garden in the back. Hermione, Susan and Hannah walked over to the fence and looked at the fluffy ball like creatures in the enclosure. "Oh, look at those Puffskeins. They look so cute. I think we are at the right place."
Ron just walked through the door, not waiting for his friends. Harry guessed that Ron wanted to get this over with so they could go to Zonko's and buy some joke products. Shrugging his shoulders, Harry entered the shop after Ron and held the door open for the rest to come in.
The shopkeeper came out the back room, wiping his dirty hands on a cloth he had on his hip. "Good day and welcome to Brood and Peck, the leading creatures shop in Hogsmeade. We have everything for every animal you may have as a pet. How can I help you?"
Harry watched Ron explaining what he needed, the shop keeper brought a book on owls so Ron point out what kind of owl Pigwidgeon is..
The shopkeeper nodded and stroked his hin in thought. "Well, this is a small one. For this kind of owl, I have some good food items that you could use for it to become stronger, so it could fly faster and carry heavier packages if you also use it for your post. As for his behavior, I think all you need to do is give him the attention it wants until it knows that you accept him how he is. He will calm down in the future." The shopkeeper patiently explained to Ron, knowing the behavior was the real reason why Ron was seeking his insight.
Ron mumbled something like he wanted it to be calm right now, but agreed to the owl treats for Pigwidgeon. When Ron left the counter, Harry walked up and asked if the shopkeeper knew something about snakes.
The shopkeeper looked surprised at this question, but upon noticing the faded scar on Harry's forehead his demeanor changed. "Of course I know something about snakes, even if this kind of pet is rare in our circles. Where do you keep it?"
While Harry talked with the shopkeeper, Hermione and Susan looked at the different creatures on display. Hermione liked her cat too much to really wish for another animal, but Susan was looking at a young raven that looked at her with one eye. The raven then flew down to land on her shoulder, looking at her with both eyes. Susan then scratched its chin with the raven closing its eyes and turned its head so Susan could reach the spot it liked. "Well look at you, being cute."
To Susan and Hermione's surprise the raven opened its eyes and vocalized, "Hello pretty girl." Hermione was giggling at the expression on Susan's face as the redhead was gaping in shock. Susan didn't expect the bird to be able to talk.
The shopkeeper, distracted by Harry, did a double take on the raven on Susan's shoulder, his eyes showing surprise. "Well, that is new. Until now, Edgar only accepted the food I gave to him, even snapping at me when I tried to examine him to see if he was healthy." The shopkeeper chuckled. Shaking his head bemused.
"I haven't had him very long of course, a Canadian associate of mine found his egg recently and thought I might like to try raising a raven. Problem is he's far too intelligent and stubborn for his own good."
Susan looked at the shopkeeper in shock at the mention of the raven's name. "Edgar? That was my father's name."
Hermione interjected before the shopkeeper could respond. "I presume you're a fan of Edgar Allen Poe?" Susan turned to her with a curious look. Hermione explained. "He's an American poet from 19th century, he's famous for some of his poems, most notably 'The Raven'"
The shopkeeper smiles shrugged sheepishly. "I admit I was a fan of Poe in my youth, but the poem made me very curious about ravens in general. Edgar here in particular, is a common raven. They are known for being able to mimic human speech. Muggles would likely think them magical except ravens aren't the only birds that can mimic human speech. Anyway, Edgar is almost a year old so he'll live for possibly ten to fifteen years. So if you're interested I can offer a pamphlet on his feeding habits and how to care for him as well as a travel cage for 7 galleons.""
Susan nodded eagerly, already formulating a letter in her mind to write when they would be back in the castle. After they were done in the shop, the friends walked along the street again to go to the Three Broomsticks, where they would find Daphne and Tracey already waiting for them.
Hermione saw them waving their hands when they entered, so she grabbed Harry's arm and pulled him towards their friends. The rest was following them, and soon they sat with a butterbeer and a grumbling Ron at the table.
