Laughter filled the princess room as she watched the two Guardians discuss about the proper way of making chocolate brownies.
"No! You put light brown sugar and white sugar!"
"I'm telling you! Dark brown sugar makes them more delicious! And you cream the butter with the sugar, but you don't want to add too much air!"
"That's what makes it great!"
"No! I like my brownies fudgy! Not cakie!"
"Heretic!"
As they continued with their fight, Gentiana walked in with an injured Pryna.
"Pryna!" She gasped as she reached for the white puppy who licked her face with enthusiasm. Luna sighed as she realized her dog was alright and she glanced to the wrapping around Pryna's leg. "Gentiana, this?"
"She had it with her when I found her, your highness."
Luna stared at the bandages and then stared at the two guardians. "Selene, Sirius," They stopped fighting and looked at her. "Can you discover who helped Pryna? I wish to thank them."
Selene approached the white dog and patted her head. "You sent her to Prince Noctis, right? Then we should just check people around him."
"Uh! I volunteer!" Sirius said with a wide grin upon his face.
"You just want an excuse to see the city's architecture!"
"And what's wrong with that? Besides, you can't go because your mission is to be by Luna's side!"
Lunafreya giggled at their banter and turned to Sirius with a smile. "Please find the kind person who helped Pryna, Sirius."
"Okay!"
Today was a cold night, winter in Tenebrae was a white winter… She extended her hand to catch a falling snowflake and she watched as it melted in her hand. At that moment something else was placed on her hand and Luna looked up to Selene's smiling face as she let go of the hot coco.
"Thank you." The princess said as she took a sip of the warm liquid, she watched as Selene closed the window but allowed the curtains to remain as they were, so that she could see the falling snow.
Selene then sat opposite to her, with a book she'd stolen from the library and a cup of her own that she'd placed on top of the resting table, that they'd pulled from its place next to the sofa. The two were wrapped in a comfortable blanket, their backs leaning against the cushions of the bay window. The fire burned in the other side of the room, it sent a soothing heat, and the light of the flames were strong enough for them to still be able to see, but still Luna had turned on the lamp next to her for more light for her friend to read.
"We're almost at the end of the year…" She whispered as she stared at the snow that piled up in her balcony.
"Hn." Selene answered as she took a sip of her drink and turned the other page.
"We've been together for half a year now." The princess turned to her friend with a smile.
"I guess, so…"
Luna giggled, as her Selene seemed to be immersed in her book. "What are you reading anyway?"
"It is a great thing called 'a book'." She teased with a smirk that caused a blush to appear in Luna's cheeks, the princess kicked her friend lightly, Selene laughed. "That's not very Princess like of you, your highness."
"It's past my work hours."
"Ah, so it is a job."
Luna pouted. "You know what I meant! Don't tease me!"
Selene giggled and closed the book, she placed it on the table with the cape turned towards the princess for her to read.
"The Final Journey…" Luna read out loud and looked at her friend.
"It's a story about a god who travels around the world he created," Selene explained as she gripped the cup in her hands. "He goes around the world meeting people, sometimes he helps them, other times there is nothing he can do, and other times he's also considered the bad guy."
"Why is he traveling?"
Selene placed the cup down and leaned against her free hand. "Hm, I'm not sure, I haven't gotten to that part yet."
"What do you think he's traveling for?"
"Hmm…" She wondered as she looked at the falling snow. "I think… he's searching for something…"
"What?"
"A choice."
"A choice?" Luna stared at the book above the table confused.
"It's like… every short story in the novel is about people choosing their own paths. There was one story about a woman who choose to live a life of one day. Another where a man chooses to die, for the people he cared for. Another where one person's choices caused the death of others… It's all about choices, so I guess the God is also searching for the choice he will one day have to make."
Luna hummed in understanding as she passed her hand over the bookcase. "Then… do you think the choice he'll make will be the right one?"
Selene shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know, maybe for him it will be… it doesn't really matter, right? To others he might make the wrong choice, but for him it will be the right one."
"I guess…" Luna returned the book to her friend and with a smile she said. "But I still hope his choice will be the right one, after all, he's a god."
Selene didn't answer as she took the book. She couldn't answer, for her, the right choice was non-existing, there was only A choice. One choice had no meaning in the moment, it only had meaning latter on, once the consequences of it would become visible…
Year ME 749, June.
She sat down exhausted, as she allowed a sigh to leave her lips, she felt something cold against her cheek. Luna flinched, at the cold and looked at a smiling Selene holding an ice cream wrap.
"Sugar?"
She giggled and took the ice cream from her hands. "Yes, thank you. Today's hot."
Selene looked at the older girl next to her and frowned. "Are you alright?" There was exhaustion on the princess face, even as she tried to hide it, she could tell.
Luna smiled. It was amazing how quickly the two of them became friends. Selene was nothing like the other guards or people, she was like Sirius. Carefree, relaxed, she never spoke out of term when they had company, but she was always the first to intervene when the Empire was overboard. She smiled and wondered if all Guardians were like those two. They both treated her as a person, they didn't care if she was royalty or the Oracle. It was refreshing and it allowed her to have a new friend.
"I'm fine." She sighed as she leaned against the chair. "I'm happy that I can help them." She stared at the place where now children were laughing and jumping, having received her blessing. "I only wished I could do more…" She quickly felt exhausted again, as she recalled all the requests that she received, and even though she tried her best she couldn't get to them all…
Selene glanced at the same children. A few minutes ago, they couldn't move, now tiny lights lingered around them, but she could also see, that the darkspots in their bodies weren't completely gone. "You're doing what you can." The Oracle wasn't all powerful, she was a human girl, and humans had limitations… but that was why they were chosen... Selene blinked and shook the strange sensation that assailed her.
"Yes, I know. But sometimes I wish…" She felt a hand on hers, as she looked towards the owner she saw Selene's smiling face.
"Yes, yes, now," She grabbed the ice cream from her hand and placed before her face. "Eat the ice cream before it melts, we still need to get to the other village."
Luna blushed embarrassed and took a small lick from it, she smiled as she felt the sweetness invade her mouth, it took away her exhaustion in a second. Once again she thanked Selene as she enjoyed her break and her ice cream. As she did she watched as Selene and the children talked for a while, before they laughed and resumed to running around while their parents prepared to go home.
Luna stared at the ice cream pop, that was almost finished. "Why did you become a Guardian, Selene?"
Her friend looked at her before gazing towards the playing children. The images of a black haired boy and girl walking around tagging each other and a dark blond glassed boy sighing at their behavior, was quickly engulfed in fire and blood... Selene feigned a smile as she looked at the princess. "I wanted to be stronger." She responded, with sincerity.
"Why?" The Oracle asked again, feeling that there was more to her words than just the need to get strong.
Selene shrugged her shoulders and reached for the rest of her ice cream that, had melted and fallen to the ground. She took it to the nearest garbage and as she cleaned her hands she glanced at the princess. "Because, there is something I wanted to protect." And there was something she had to do as an Ariadust...
Selene glanced at the watch in the princess's wrist as she drank a bit of water. "We should get going, it's already 3:15."
"Okay, let's go then."
Year ME 749, October
She laid in the snow, the cold prickled her gloveless fingers, but she didn't move, her figure was hidden by shadows, snow and the camouflage mantle that kept her warm in the blizzard. She'd been like that for hours, still she remained perfectly still as she waited for her target to come. She spared a quick glance at the clock in her wrist and allowed herself to exhale. 'Seven more minutes.'
The base was quiet, almost no one worked at that hour. Her finger pondered on the trigger as she waited patiently, she had to flex them from time to time, otherwise she'd lose sensation in them.
As the seconds quickly approached the accorded hour, she watched as her target came out. He was drunk, and he was moving awkwardly as he gripped the bottle in his hand. She saw how he screamed to the snowy scenery and then she watched how he leaned over a trash can and hurled his intestines out.
It was in that moment that she pulled the trigger. The shot wasn't even heard, absorbed by the howling wind and snow, but it did hit the target, as it created that splash of red.
Instantly, the man stopped moving. His body going limp against the trash can.
Selene frowned as she took her eyes from the periscope and looked at the base far away from her. "Mission accomplished." She whispered to the communicator on her ear as she shut it off and took it out, not waiting to hear the ok.
She quickly packed her things and walked down the mountain to the place where she'd parked her bike.
Her stomach was swirling and before she knew it she was leaning against a tree and vomiting the rations she'd eaten just a few hours ago. It was just a job. That's what they taught her. It's for the good of the royal families. That's what they said. But still… Selene clenched her hand into fists and punched the tree bark.
"Fuck!" She screamed to the snow, the mountain, animals, hell even the Daemons. It was a mission. It was an order. She had trained for it. So, why did it feel wrong?
Selene moved from the tree and continued her descent. She had to leave, the sooner the better.
As she rode the bike, she tried to stay away from what she'd just done. The man was a scientist who world for the empire, he was a bastard who was experimenting with children, so that he could create the greatest weapons for the Empire! He was scum! Still… she gritted her teeth and drove faster. 'Stop thinking about it!'
Year ME 749, November
She stretched her back and looked at the sky where the magic wall shined, she stared at it for a moment. It had been a few years since she saw that barrier that kept the city of Insomnia safe from the dangers of the outside world...
Selene pondered, for a moment, how the people she'd left behind in this city would react to her return... would they accept her decision? Or scorn her for it? With a forced smile the young Guardian grabbed her bag and walked towards the citadel; it was time to present herself to the King.
He passed his gaze over the reports from several sectors, his eyes hurt, and he could feel a headache looming in. The King sighed and placed the documents down.
In that moment, his butler and shield entered the room, both sweaty and with lack of breath.
"What's wrong? Did something happen?" Was it the Empire? Or was it Noctis?
"We found her."
It took him a moment to understand his shield's words, but quickly the King recalled the young girl he'd taken as his protégé. "Where!?"
"I just received the report, just outside the New Wall," He walked towards him and placed a photo Id and shot of a window, where he saw a young girl, looking at the photographer and smiling. "Same Id, that she took 7 years ago, only the photo has changed. She came by bus…"
He reached for the photo and looked at the girl, her hair was longer, she looked pale and thin, he wondered if she was sick.
"Did any of the guards say anything to her?"
"No sir. They weren't sure if it was her or not. After all… it's been 6 years." His shield looked at his butler who stepped forward.
"Sire, is it her? Is it miss Selene?"
"Yes, I would never forget those eyes." He sighed. "Where have you been young lady."
