The more Eddie sat and talked with Jamie, the more connected she felt to him. But she wasn't sure why. He was understanding of every patient he came into contact with. She listened as he continued speaking.
"I can tell you how many babies I've delivered over the years. A little more than 3,000. The difficult ones stay with you though. The first baby I ever delivered was this beautiful little girl named Stacy. She had these green eyes that sparkled when the light hit them.
I remember the moment she came into the world she opened her eyes and stared straight up at me. I knew she couldn't see very well yet because she was brand new, but she was looking straight at me. She hardly cried. Which was strange. I was initially concerned something might seriously be wrong with her. But she was completely healthy. Her mother was in labor with her for nearly 48 hours."
Eddie about choked on her onion ring she had just taken a bite of.
"T-two days?"
Jamie put a hand on her back and gave her a concerned look.
"You ok Eddie?"
Eddie nodded and took a sip of beer.
"I'm ok."
Jamie nodded and unintentionally rubbed her back.
"Good. I didn't want to perform the Heimlich on you in the middle of a crowded bar. It could get embarrassing."
Eddie gave a light laugh and munched on the last of her onion rings.
"Embarrassing? You'd be saving another life. You bring life into the world on a daily basis."
Peering at Jamie over her glass of beer, Eddie saw the look of worry on his face. He spoke over his last bite of salad.
"My biggest worry is getting too much on my plate. Bringing babies into the world is beautiful. I wouldn't change it for anything in the world."
Eddie smirked and finished off her beer.
"What did your family think when you told them you wanted to be a doctor instead of a cop?"
Now it was Jamie's turn to smirk.
"My mom was proud of me. I could tell my dad was slightly disappointed, but he supported my decision. I guess I just get in this weird headspace sometimes when I have a hard day. Most of my days are good. Today was just a bump in the road I guess."
Eddie flashed Jamie a smile. She reached for his hand again, but instead brushed the tips of his fingers on his left hand. She felt that strange electricity again. But it felt good.
"That's it. Fight back against that self-doubt. You are a wonderful doctor. I know that for a fact. The first day we met, I saw you in action. You saved Sierra and Rosie's life. They are alive because of you. They are going to live full lives. I don't know about you, but I think I'm topped off."
Jamie nodded and finished off his last beer. Eddie followed Jamie towards the door, and he held it open for her. She watched as he hailed a cab for her. As the cab pulled up, she spoke.
"Thanks for a great night."
Eddie felt Jamie pull her to him and gave her a gentle kiss. It turned deep for a moment, and then they were forced to part when the cab honked.
"Yeah, I had fun."
Eddie got in the cab and smiled. She felt heat come to her cheeks. She mumbled to herself as she Jamie closed the door for her. As the cab pulled away, she watched Jamie get smaller as they got farther away. Turning around, she kept smiling. She felt like a giddy schoolgirl.
"Definitely a date."
The cab driver looked at her in the rear-view mirror.
"Did you say something miss?"
Eddie shook her head.
"Oh no. Sorry."
Eddie felt slightly embarrassed but then took a breath and let it out, letting the last hour or so sink in. She felt very connected to Jamie in ways she'd never felt with any of the guys she'd been out with before. The pull was getting strong every day, and that strange electricity she felt when she touched Jamie's hand? She'd never felt that before. She hoped they could continue going out for drinks. The way he'd kissed her, she couldn't describe it, but she liked it.
