Chapter 47: Agree to Disagree
The vibrations of my cellphone in my pocket stop my footsteps from advancing toward the bar's entrance. My heart races in my chest while I pull my phone out of my pocket, glancing at the screen. I whisper, "Give me a minute, Sam," into his ear. I pull away from him, and he turns, leaning against his bike eyeing me. I retreat away from Sam to give myself some privacy. Sam stands next to the entrance of the bar. I try to wave him into the bar, but he won't budge. His eyes stay locked on me while I answer the phone, knowing it's Tobias. I attempt to make my voice sound happy, "Hey baby, I miss you!"
He laughs, "I miss you too." Loud music erupts through the speaker of my phone from the bar. Tobias continues, "I'm calling to let you know I made it to Alaska alive, and I'm safe." Relief fills my chest at his words. I lower my voice, giggling, "Thank goodness!" The invisible weight I've been feeling all day is suddenly gone from my chest when his words hit my ears. Tears well up in my eyes, hearing his voice, and suddenly, I wish he was here with me instead of Sam to deal with whatever I'm about to walk into, but that isn't possible. Tobias asks, "How's your day going?" I pick at a string on my jeans while answering, "It's going. Sam and I are going to Jake's tonight. I think Chris might sleep over. Although I haven't asked her yet, I'm sure she will because Will isn't home tonight." My mind drifts to all the trouble Chris and I can cause, recalling the last time Chris and I had a sleepover at Andrews Air Force Base.
"Well, have fun. I'm sure you will have more fun than I will tonight, being stuck in Alaska on an Air Force base all alone. I wish you were here with me," he whispers. I murmur, "Me too, but I'm sure you will survive without me for a day or two." I mock him. My mind conjures an image of him standing staring out a window with his phone held to his ear, his lips projected, and his eyes huge. I have seen him often do this look when he attempts to get his way. He sighs, "I will barely survive. I better get going. I have some paperwork to do before I can leave to find a room here." A smile tugs at my lips, replying, "I won't keep you any longer." He laughs, "Tell everyone hello for me, and please don't drink too much since I'm not there." I giggle, "I never do, but I won't." I hang up the phone at the same time he does, missing him even more than before.
Sam smiles at me when I meet him by the entrance. He asks, "Are you ready?" His shoulder touches mine. I whisper, "Yup, let's do this." I take a deep breath and take a step into the overpopulated bar. Sam and I take a seat next to the door, not knowing who the hell I'm looking for in case we need to quickly exit. My eyes float around the bar, looking for someone I might know. I groan, "I can't deal with all these people here. It's too crowded." Sam motions to the bar, "Do you want something to drink?" A person knocks into our table, spilling their drink all over it. I reply, "Pina Colada."
I bounce nervously in my seat, waiting for Sam to return. A smile tugs at my lips while I watch all the female heads snap toward him, walking toward the bar. While waiting for a bartender, multiple females flirt with him. I roll my eyes when he turns each of the women down. Their smiles are gone as each of them returns to their respective groups of friends. A giggle escapes my lips, overhearing one of the women speaking to a group of her friends complaining about how Sam wouldn't take her home for a one-night stand or even give her the time of day. The longer Sam is gone, the more I begin to wonder what's taking him so long to come back with our drinks. My phone vibrates with a text notification from Tobias. It's a picture showing a beautiful pink and orange sunset over an open field. Moments later, my phone vibrates again with another text from him. He's naked, only wearing his glasses and covering himself with a black and white pillow. My mouth becomes dry, staring at his chiseled form. What are you wearing? I'm not currently wearing anything. Are you down for a date later? I quickly type, Give me an hour, and it's a date. I need to tell you something, but it can wait for later. Tobias responds with another text, Okay, Mrs. Eaton, but don't keep me waiting too long. I can't wait to tell you everything I want to do to you when I get home. My heart races at the words he has written, and immediately, I long to be home alone with him on Facetime.
The scraping of wood against the floor catches my attention, and I close the photo of Tobias as the seat next to me moves. My eyes dart to find Stacy sitting next to me. "Fancy seeing you here, Trissy," she giggles. She is already tipsy from indulging too much. I try to ignore her. She continues, "Tell me, what do you have that I don't? Why does T want you and not me?" Her eyes dart to my wedding band, continuing, "That should have been mine, not yours."
I shoot, "I don't know, Stacy. Maybe Tobias is with me because I don't cheat on him." Her eyes land on Sam, making his way back to the table. A mischievous smile crosses her lips, Where is T?" Here eyes scan the bar searching for Tobias, continuing, "Please, I saw you come here with Sam on the back of his bike. I know something is going on between you two."
"No. . ." Before I can finish my statement, Sam returns with my drink. He hands it to me, smiling. He places his whiskey on the rocks onto the table. I groan while Stacy smiles victoriously, taking out her phone, singing, "Smile, Tris. I can't wait to show T this." She smiles, laughing while looking at the photograph on her phone, continuing, "That is rich! You are cheating on him. I know a cheater when I see one. I know something is going on between you two, and I can't wait to tell him!"
Slamming my hand onto the table, I protest, "Nothing is going on between us. Sam and I have been friends for years since high school, and that is all we will ever be. Stacy, you lost Four. It's time you get over it and get it through your thick skull because he isn't coming back to you, darling. He is very much in love with me. That is why he married me, and I'm the one wearing his wedding ring, not you."
Stacy snarls, "Please, honey. T married you because he felt sorry for you. I have known Tobias Eaton for years, and if there is one thing I know about him, he likes to rescue the damsel in distress. You played that part oh so well when it came to your relationship with Peter. Didn't you? I saw how you tried to get your hooks into him from the very first day we moved in next door when you pretended to trip over the boxes. No one is that uncoordinated." I roll my eyes at Stacy. Sam sits next to me. He smiles, "Clearly, you haven't met Tris. She falls over her own two feet." His eyes return to roving around the bar while Stacy grunts something inaudible.
A server interrupts the conversation asking, "Does anyone need a refill?" I wave him off. Another waitress turns simultaneously with a tray full of drinks. She dumps her entire tray onto Sam's lap. Sam yells, "What the. . .!" The young waitress looks embarrassed, muttering, "I'm so sorry, sir. Let me get you some towels." Sam doesn't wait for the towels. Instead, he stalks to the bathroom, leaving me alone with the devil herself.
Stacy sneers, "Tris, I know a cheater when I see one, and you are cheating on your husband. Shame on you." Holding my hands up, I snap, "Stacy, I'm done listening to you. I don't need this." I warn her. I stand and gulp my now liquid drink. The room begins to spin. I grip the table for dear life, attempting to keep myself from falling over. Stacy stands, whispering sinisterly into my ear, "Oh no, Tris, you see, I am far from being done with you, and neither is Drew. You stole Tobias from me, and I will get him back, one way or another. Let's say Peter's dying wish was to have you join him in hell for all of eternity since that's where you belong. I stand gripping the table, trying to stay upright. My vision turns black as the darkness takes over, and I feel myself fall with my head hitting the floor.
I know I'm leaving this story on a cliff hanger. Please review and give me your thoughts and opinions on this new chapter. The major question...with Tobias away, how do you think he will react to the news that Tris has passed out? Next question, who drugged Tris? Sam, Stacy, or someone else who isn't in the picture yet? I can't wait to read the theories. I will see you all with some answers in the next chapter in the month of March with another update.
