Hello Readers and welcome to the March update for this story! Thank you to everyone who continues to read, comment, and enjoy this story. Another friendly reminder, I don't own Divergent, only the plot, and any military-related mistakes are mine. I hope you all enjoy this chapter. Happy Reading!
So I'm going to reply to some guest reviews.
Lizzie-I'm glad you're enjoying the story. Caleb will be making another appearance eventually.
Guest who wants to know why it's so difficult for Tris to be so honest with Tobias. That is a great question and I would say keep reading because that question will be answered next chapter.
Guest who hopes Sam isn't a traitor- My lips are sealed. However, I will say Sam is one of my favorite original characters i have written. As far as a FourTris baby is concerned, keep reading and you get your answer in the next several chapters.
Chapter 47: Anger
My head's pounding, my eyes snap open in panic, searching the unknown room, brightly lit by daytime sunlight. A small groan escapes my lips. I feel like I have a massive hangover, even though I only took one sip of alcohol last night. Did I have more? I can't remember. My eyes rove the room searching for clues as to where I am, and they catch on a figure I hadn't expected to see in almost two days: Tobias. He's sitting next to the hospital bed, still as stone, wearing his green flight suit. Tobias's head rests on his hands, and his eyes locked onto the monitor I'm attached to above the bed. I croak, "What happened?" My fingers rub my temple.
Tobias's worrisome eyes meet mine, as he snaps, "I was going to ask you the same question." His eyes dart between Sam and me, looking for answers to the question he asked. He continues, "Can you tell me, Tris, why I got a panicked call from Sam telling me he was bringing you to the hospital? That you had passed out from lord knows what! Can you tell me why you drank more than you could tolerate when I asked you not to when I was gone when I wasn't around to protect you!" He speaks through measured, controlled, angry words. Tobias isn't only irritated with me. He's pissed at himself for leaving me alone.
I whisper, "I'm sorry. I didn't even have a whole drink last night, I think. I don't even remember what happened last night." I look at Sam, wanting clarification on why I can't remember anything from the night before. Sam slightly shrugs his shoulders. Tobias shoots, "Sam?" Tobias glares at Sam. The accusations are evident in Tobias's voice while he asks, "What the fuck happened?"
"I...I...I honestly have no idea. I don't know. A waitress turned and dropped her entire tray onto me before whatever happened. I was on the way to the bathroom when I thought I saw someone or something suspicious by the backdoor. I left the bar to investigate. I left the bar for not even a minute, and when I came back, Tris was on the ground, passed out. I couldn't wake her. I panicked and brought her to the hospital. On admission, her labs revealed someone spiked her drink with Rohypnol or multiple pills of it."
Tobias yells, "Damn it all!" The frustration in his voice is evident while he slams his fist against the overhead table, "I should have been there. I should have been there to protect you. It is my job as your husband to protect you. You shouldn't have gone out last night! This is all my fault for leaving." Reaching for him, I whisper, "No, it's not, Tobias," grasping his fingers with my own, wanting to bring him comfort. Tobias's eyes narrow, and accusation fills them, asking, "Sam, were you the only one with access to her drinks beside the bartender at Jakes?"
Sam runs his hand through his hair, snapping in frustration, "Yeah, but I didn't put anything into her drink!" Tobias barks, his voice changes into a no-nonsense one, "Well if it wasn't you, then who the hell was it! I'm sure you two were sitting alone! You look pretty guilty from my side of things, Sam." Sam's eyes shift to the floor. He takes a deep breath, announcing, "Actually, Tris and I weren't alone. Stacy was sitting with us, but she was three sheets to the wind. Stacy was busy telling Tris how much she wanted you back again when I left, and when I came back, finding Tris passed out, Stacy was gone."
Tobias runs his fingers through his hair, pulling at the ends. He shuts his eyes, inhaling deeply, and his voice breaks while he's speaking, "Damn it all! Stay away from Stacy, Tris, please! I don't know what angle she's playing at! She is up to trouble. I know it. I don't trust her one bit, especially since she left you laying on the ground at a bar for dead, drugged."
"I'm sorry, Tobias. It's just," I stop, glancing at Sam before continuing. I want a moment alone with Tobias before I continue. Sam interrupts, "Hold on a minute, Tris. Have you told him about the text message you received yesterday and someone broke into the house to write a message on the mirror while you were in the shower?" Confusion fills Tobias's features while he asks, "What text message? Wait, what? Tris, explain what he's talking about!" Tobias crosses his arms, continuing, "Can someone fill me in!" Frustration fills his voice as he grips his hair once again. He is going to pull it out by the roots. He turns to me, looking into my eyes, "Tris? What happened to no more secrets?"
I try to think back to yesterday, to all of the conversations we had over text. I reply, "I thought I did." He sadly shakes his head while I continue, "I got a weird text message asking me to meet someone at Jakes. Well, not exactly Jakes. It was phrased: as the same bar we last saw Stacy. I asked Sam to come with me since you weren't an option." Tobias angrily laughs, "You went to a bar because a mysterious person asked you. Are you joking me? Are you looking to get hurt or murdered?" I yell, "I had Sam with me." Tobias snaps, "A lot of good that did you!"
I snarl, "You are being irrational, Tobias." He closes his eyes, crossing his arms against his chest. His nostrils flare while he asks, "What about the mirror in the house? What was written on it?" I can feel the frustration radiate off him. Whispering, I answer, "Something about seeing me. I don't know who wrote it, I swear. I locked the door when I got home, I always do, and you know that." The tears begin to form in my eyes as the realization I messed up about not telling Tobias immediately about the text message and the mirror as Sam suggested I do. We made a promise of no more secrets when he came home.
Tobias looks at me with disappointment heavy in his eyes, and his eyes snap toward the ceiling, not speaking a word. I glance at Sam, not knowing what to say to make the situation any better. I feel utterly lost. I know Tobias is internally blaming himself for everything that has happened to me while he's gone, but none of it is his fault. I know he's angry at me for not telling him immediately about the texts and the message on the mirror. Abruptly, Tobias stands, pushing his chair against the wall with a bang, "I need some time to think."
I ask, "Think? Think about what?" Wondering aloud where the hell he is going. Tobias's answer is laced with emotion, and his words instantly strike like a sword to my heart, "I don't know if I can trust you anymore, Tris. You know I have trust issues from my past. How can I trust you when you don't trust me enough to tell me what's going on? I feel like you don't communicate with me ever. So much of our relationship, our marriage has the potential to be long-distance, and if you can't communicate openly with me or won't communicate with me. Maybe this isn't worth it."
Tobias stalks out of the room while I frantically yell, "Tobias, please don't do this!" I jump out of bed and begin to rip off the heart monitor lead. I bite my lip while I pull the IV from my hand. Sam eyes me with curiosity, asking, "Do you think this is a smart idea?" I roll my eyes at him, replying, "Yeah, I do. You helped get me into this mess, and you are going to help me get out of it. Are you coming or going?" I glare at Sam while he silently stares at me with cold eyes, not saying a word. His arms crossed.
Walking down the hall, I curse Tobias and Sam under my breath. Suddenly, I feel an arm slip around my waist, taking some of my weight. A male voice groans into my ear, "My goodness, you are stubborn. What happened to my sweet Tris? I don't recall you being like this in high school or even in college?"
My eyes dart toward Sam, smirking, "Maybe Tobias is rubbing off on me, just a little. Also, let's not forget Peter was a total ass. I had to learn to stick up for myself in this life. The girl you knew in college is dead and gone because if Peter had wanted to break up after he beat the shit out of you, I would have let him, thinking it was my fault, and I wouldn't have fought him. I would have let him leave with no discussion. I'm only older and smarter, and I don't put up with anyone's shit anymore."
Sam smiles, "Good to know, but as much as you want to say that the younger version is dead and gone, I still see hints of her come out when it's just the two of us." I roll my eyes at him, and Sam smiles, "Now, let's find Four. You must love him because you would have never gone after Peter like this." My cheeks heat at the comment while Sam continues, "Let's go find your boy." I whisper, "I do love him so much." Sam helps me walk out the door and into the sunshine to find a cab . . . in search of Tobias.
Thoughts and opinions on this chapter. Do you think Tris will be able to find Tobias? That answer will happen in the next update which will come in April. Until then have a great month and please review.
