Jo-Lan's Heroic Might

Chapter 1

I meant to do this one a while ago, but I kept putting it off. Especially when Justice and Hunters got more popular. But now I've got something planned for this and a kung fu based one. So on with the show.

(Izuku POV)

It's been a few months since I was diagnosed quirkless. I wasn't expecting things to be easy, but when Kaachan fell into a creek and I tried to help; he got even more mean. He is always trying to push me down. As well as hurting others. And that's where I find myself today. "I won't let you hurt him Kaachan!" "What can you do? You don't have a quirk, so you're useless." He says as he starts letting off some sparks from his hands. The other two behind him are also getting ready to charge, but I can't leave. I won't!

"I think that is more than enough. I suggest you boys run along." I hear and a tall man walks into the park. He has a deep tan and dark brown hair. He is wearing some mirror sunglasses and looks to be wearing a martial arts gi. But not like the ones from some dojos. It is blue and orange. And just when it looks like Kaachan and the others are about to say something, the man lets off this scary energy around himself. A presence that scares them stiff. One of the bullies even wets himself.

"Leave. NOW!" The man says and the bullies do. Once they are gone, he comes over to the two of us who were about to be attacked. His aura is gone but he is still intimidating. But then he smiles and says, "are you two alright?" while kneeling to look us in the eye. I say that I am, and I help the other boy up. He says a quick thanks to both of us before running away. "So why did you help that boy?" the man asks as he stands up. I look down a bit before saying, "I don't know. I just knew I couldn't let Kaachan hurt him."

The man smiles a bit before saying, "that was very brave. Maybe a bit crazy, but the good kind. But why is that boy so quick to put you down?" This brings me back to the fact that I am quirkless and that everyone keeps telling me I can't be a hero. I'm guessing he noticed that I was down because he put his hand on my head. Trying to cheer me up a bit. "Let me guess; you don't have a quirk so everyone tells you that you can't be a hero or do anything." This brings me down more, but the man gives a big laugh before continuing.

"Trust me. Quirks are not impressive at all. Its just a shortcut people like because it makes them feel bigger or better. But I can show you what other power is out there." He says before walking over to a tree. He stands there for a second, before bringing his hands together at his side. And then he shouts, "JO-LAN CHOBATSU!" as he thrusts his hands forward. It doesn't look like he even hits the tree, but it snaps in two! As do two other trees behind it. "That is the might of Jo-Lan." When I ask him if that is what his quirk is, he surprises me by saying that he does not have a quirk.

And then he makes me an offer. "My name is Tyrone Sebastian Manning. I can show you how to tap into this. And help you show others what it truly means to be a hero." He then offers me a hand. I'm not sure about this, but it may be my best chance. Though I should run it by mom first. "Would you mind meeting my mom to tell her about some of this?" He nods with a smile and he gives me a business card to show her.

(No POV)

Izuku was amazed by the whole ordeal he had been through that day. First thinking he was going to get hurt and pushed down by Bakugo, to getting an offer to learn a powerful martial art. What else could happen? Meeting All Might? He shook that thought out and instead went to talk with his mother about meeting Manning. "Slow down Izuku. So this man…. Manning-san? He helped you when you were being attacked and suddenly offered to teach you martial arts? I'm very confused." She looked over the business card Izuku had and looked up the man.

He apparently worked partially with the Lee conglomeration. A powerful group of companies out of America. They had a hand in multiple different industries, from Hero support to technology and bioengineering. Though they something they were less popular for was the pushing for more quirkless rights. Certain members had been cited as leading protests against the current society. Though most had been non-violent. What worked for them was that many heroes agreed with their cause and ideas. All Might being a leading one. Stating, "while it is true that heroes with quirks are on the frontlines, they are not the only ones. We often forget and ignore the great heroes that are first responders and especially the police who act first to contain a situation. They too are heroes!"

The man her son had met apparently managed a few businesses in the eastern regions. From Hong Kong to Sydney Australia. And was apparently a insanely accomplished martial artist. Even against quirked opponents, he was always victorious. Many suspected that he had some type of quirk, but time and time again he had been proven not to have one.

'I'm worried about what he could teach Izuku. But maybe this could help him become a hero. In some way.' Inko thought as she watched her son practicing a move he had seen Tyrone do. She smiled slightly and decided to at least hear the man out. The next day though could be trying, but it could be just the bit of hope Izuku needed.

The next day, before Izuku wakes up, Inko calls the number listed on the card. When the man picks up, she introduces herself and asks to meet with him. "Of course. Perhaps your husband should come as well. He should finally be able to be home thanks to some investigating I did. We can all meet this evening." This surprises Inko, but she is glad that Hisashi will finally be able to come home after so long away. (That is one of the most annoying parts of so many anime. Disney has the dead mom problem, and most anime have the missing or dead- or dead-beat dad bullshit.)

Hisashi arrives at their home a little after noon and Inko tells him some of the good news. "So we may have more to thank this Manning person for than I thought. I'm still shocked he made reservations at one of the nicest restaurants in town." Tyrone had booked a private room at a restaurant owned by the Lee conglomerate so they could discuss some more of the details.

They all get dressed up and take a cab to the restaurant. When they arrive, they are greeted by the maître d and escorted to the room. "Ah welcome Midoriya's have a seat. Don't worry. They won't serve anything that is insanely out of your understanding. I wouldn't know where to begin with some of the fancy stuff. But that aside order what you want. It is on me tonight." At that each member gets to try some delicacies that they may never have the chance to try.

Once dinner is done, Tyrone brings up his offer. "My family have been practitioners of an ancient martial art called Jo-Lan. It is an incredibly powerful style, through the linking of the mind, body, and spirit. This source allows the user to unleash incredible power, beyond what any quirk can do. But it does require intense training." The man brings up another point in that most with a quirk cannot tap the source. Mentioning that there seems to be a disruption that doesn't allow most to use it. He then demonstrates by first lifting some of the glasses on the table, and then unleashing energy blasts from his hands. And finished the demonstration by seemingly teleporting in front of them to make a shield to stop the falling glass.

He looks down to the family before saying, "you're skeptical. You all think that quirks would be the only way that. And unfortunately, I can't prove I'm quirkless in this sense. But I do know I can teach your son. And I can help him become the hero he wants to be." The older Midoriya's are uneasy about trusting him right away. But the look on Izuku's face, the awe and admiration for what he can do and what he could teach Izuku, is enough for them to give this a chance.

Over the next 10 years, Izuku learns and trains under Tyrone. By the time he was 10 he had unlocked the first level of Jo-Lan power. And he demonstrated it by defending a few kids from Bakugo. The ash blonde had apparently taken offense at a girl with long earlobes and a boy with a strange belt around his waist saying they would be heroes. And when he tried to brag up how he would beat them all, they responded by saying he was no hero with his attitude.

And when he charged at them, Izuku was quick to intercept. By blocking the large right hook Bakugo always went for. Pushing it away, before moving in close and sending him flying with a Chobatsu. This knocks the violent boy out and the other parents are quick to note the whole exchange. The explosive boy's mother is quick to apologize for what he had done. "When we get home, YOU are going to be in sooo much trouble. You are grounded. DO YOU HEAR ME!?" She shouts at him, and the boy is quick to retort. With the boy's father coming in and trying to get both of them to calm down and stop making a scene.

For the parents of the two who were about to be attacked though, they happily thank Izuku for defending their kids. "Your quirk is awesome kid! You'll be a rocking hero in the future!" the long-haired father of the girl with long earlobes says. Izuku then smiles saying, "I don't have a quirk. That is the result of training." This amazes the kids and shocks the adults.

For Izuku, he sees this as his own special step forward. Now he isn't worried about factors and things he can't control. He's focused on his goal and the training to get there.

Bakugo had stopped trying to mess with Izuku after that. And anytime he had tried to brag himself up, Izuku was quick to clear his throat and make a quick flash of his eyes to tell him to stop. It infuriated the boy, but he knew he couldn't keep up with Izuku. 'At least for now. I know I can get more out of my power. I don't know how he is doing that, or what that gaijin taught him. But I'll surpass it and him. Then All Might.' He thought.

The week before that last year of middle school for both boys, the teacher had announced the plans and applications that needed to be filled out for all of the high schools. He was quick to point out that both Bakugo and Izuku would be applying to UA. While most weren't surprised by Bakugo, they were still curious why Izuku would apply. "I mean he doesn't have a quirk so…." One student said before Bakugo cut him off. "Don't underestimate him. I did for too long. And he's beaten me more than once." The boy says with an irate look on his face.

That admission surprises most of the other students and they are all more curious how Izuku could have done said feat. In most stories this might be where Bakugo tries to tell Izuku to back off or walk away from applying to UA. But he's still warry of the other teen.

On his way home, Izuku passes through a tunnel. He then senses something and dodges out of the way. "Quick reflexes. That could come in handy." A mass of slime and sludge says before attacking again. Izuku then drops his bag before quick stepping back and unleashing a Chobatsu. Which scatters the monster all around the area.

"Halt villain! For I am….. apparently too late. Did you do this young man?" All Might had burst out of the sewers not long after the villain is defeated. Izuku on the other hand is amazed to be seeing the greatest hero of the current age standing in front of him. He shakes himself out of his fanboying and says, "yeah. I used my martial arts techniques to beat him." That statement shocks All Might, but he starts to put some pieces together in his head.

With a big laugh as he is picking up the monster into soda bottles, he asks, "you wouldn't have happened to have studied under Manning, would you?" This surprises Izuku and asks how he knows his Jo-Lan master. With a smaller smile, All Might says, "I owe him a great debt. He saved my life 5 years ago. If he hadn't stopped me from rushing in and then fought alongside me, I may have died against that foe. His power or rather skill in martial arts is incredible." This amazes Izuku. But it does answer where Tyrone had disappeared to for a time.

All Might then asks if Izuku is planning to go to a hero school. "Yeah. UA. I'd originally wanted to be just like you when I got there but…. Now I want to show people what potential there is for quirkless people." All Might smiles softly again and tells Izuku that he will make a genuinely great hero. But before the number 1 can leap off, Izuku stops him and asks for his autograph. With a bigger smile, All Might writes it in the notebook Izuku had with him. And then leaps off.

'This could be interesting for down the road. How will young Midoriya and maybe even Manning influence the world as a whole?' All Might thinks to himself while he is in the air.
