Now that Neji wasn't on Team Guy, he saw less of Tenten. But she was still his best friend, so she came over for dinner at least once a week when she wasn't on missions, so they could catch up.
They'd finished eating their meals and were reminiscing about the old days, about the Gaara rescue mission when they'd had to fight clones of themselves. Naruto had made some custard pudding for dessert, and just brought it to the table when Tenten suddenly jumped up from her seat and took off to the bathroom.
"Nothing was past it's expiry date," Naruto quickly defended his cooking, because he had been known to forget to check sometimes.
After a minute, Tenten reappeared wiping her mouth.
"Is everything alright?" Neji checked.
"Yes," she answered, looking a little embarrassed. "Sorry."
"No need to apologise," Neji assured her.
"Same thing happened to me," Naruto joked. "You're not pregnant are you, Tenten?"
Neji and Tenten instantly shared a look, the same thought going through both their minds.
"Oh, that's right," Naruto said. "Maybe you areā¦"
Tenten looked even more worried, so Neji went to her and took her hands.
"Tenten, there is a fast way to find out if you want to know."
She bit her lip and nodded. That was his Tenten, always willing to face things logically and head on.
"Alright," he said, looking down. "Byakugan!"
He could see Tenten's familiar chakra, and there in her belly was the glow of another chakra source. She's pregnant. She's having Guy sensei's child.
Neji blinked the byakugan away and looked up at her.
"Naruto's right. There's a baby, Tenten."
For a second she didn't react at all, but then he saw her wobble and immediately reached out to steady her. He helped her to a seat on the couch and held her hand. He didn't speak, this wasn't for him to tell her how to feel. She might not want the child, and that was fine too. Whatever she decided, he would be here for her.
"Neji, what do I do?"
Naruto answered before he could.
"This is awesome!" he declared. "Our kids will grow up together! Who knows? Maybe they'll even be on the same team!"
The thought was a pleasant one, but no matter how romantic the notion, it wasn't up to them.
"Bushier Brows sensei is cool!" Naruto continued. "He gave me an awesome training suit once, grouchy old Pervy Sage wouldn't let me wear it though..."
Tenten looked completely terrified.
"What Naruto is saying," Neji said, throwing Naruto a look that told him to stop. "Is that you have options. Give yourself a little time to get used to the idea. But whatever you decide, we're here to support you."
"Right," Naruto agreed, realising he might've overstepped. "We're in this with you, Tenten. Whatever you need."
She looked between them both and burst into tears. They shared a look, and then it was Naruto who knew what to say. He sat down beside her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"Boy, I know this feeling. Pregnancy hormones are the worst."
She wailed louder and clung to him. Over Tenten's shoulder Naruto gave him a wide-eyed look, mouthing the words 'what do I do?'. As far as Neji could tell, there wasn't anything either of them could do, except assure her that she wasn't alone. So he shuffled over and wrapped them both up, cocooning Tenten between them.
