Chapter 12

As the sun rose over Beacon Academy, the girls of Team RWBY were, for the most part, already awake. Weiss was the last to rise from her beauty sleep, yawning as she sat up from her corner bed, looking at the other three girls as they were already beginning their morning routines… Chaos was as good a descriptor as any.

"Ruby, have you seen my hairbrush?" Yang asked, through a mouth full of toothpaste, as she walked around the room in only her boy shorts, boobs out for the world to see. "I swear I left it on the nightstand."

Ruby, already dressed in her school uniform, pulled her headphones off, music blasting from them. "Actually you left it in the bathroom last night." She said, seconds before Blake, wrapped in her yukata and bow from the night before, skulked off into the bathroom with her uniform, and locked the door. The shower could be heard turning on a second later, and steam was already slipping out of the cracks.

"Damn it." Yang said, before spinning to look at Weiss. "Hey, Ice Queen..." Weiss's mind went blank for a moment as her roommate's ample bust jiggled right in her face. "Do you got a brush I can borrow?" Weiss, screwed her eyes shut, and took a calming breath.

After Blake had finished her shower and changed, her bow still atop her head, Yang finally retrieved her brush, and put her uniform on. Weiss of course, stole away the bathroom for herself the moment she could to conduct her usual hygiene routine, before applying a light amount of blush and a natural color lipstick.

Exiting the bathroom, Weiss was once more met with chaos. Their bags were dumped out on the floor. Yang was putting up a poster of some brown haired supermodel in a bikini riding a motorcycle, a bag of what Weiss could only assume was marijuana left out on the bed beside her. Blake was stacking books with seemingly romantic titles on the shelf, leaving pens, a few brushes, and bottles of oil paint scattered across the nearby study table, the other half of which contained a bag overflowing with Ruby's weapon cleaning and maintenance tools, as the owner of the cleaning kit pushed her bed closer to Weiss's in the corner. Weiss's chemistry set meanwhile was left out on the floor.

"What are you three doing?!" She asked, earning the attention of the room, as she picked her bag up off the floor, and started to gather her chemistry kit before anything could be broken.

"Uh, unpacking?" Blake asked, almost unsure of her answer.

"Decorating." Yang said with a smile.

"Making bunk beds!" Ruby said, bouncing on her toes a little.

Weiss put her head into her hands. "My teammates are insane." She thought.

After helping the others stack their beds in what could only be considered the most dangerous arrangement that rope and books could support, (motivated purely by the prospect that the sooner her teammates finished whatever ludicrous antics they had planned, the faster she could get to class,) Weiss put her case of assorted dust in her corner of the room, along with her other personal effects, before the girls rotated through the bathroom, stocking it full with their four separate sets of toiletries, of which Yang had the most in the form of hair care products. Weiss was a close second as she had less necessary but still desired scrubs and moisturizers. Ruby in third place had the essentials with a rather boyish selection of deodorant and body wash. Blake hardly had more than what was strictly necessary, lacking nail clippers it seemed. Weiss shivered at the thought of her teammate biting her nails.

Across the hallway, the team members of JNPR were only now beginning their day. As he shared the dorm with two girls Jaune had politely offered to change in the closet, and Pyrrha, sharing the room with two boys, changed in the bathroom. Ren and Nora, having traveled together for so long, had grown into the routine of simply facing away from one another to change in shared lodgings… Of course that didn't mean Nora was above sneaking peeks.

Without nearly as much baggage as their sister team, JNPR had no need to rearrange their room, and instead found their bathroom was now stocked with a messy assortment of personal cleaning products, as Ren and Nora hardly had any, and Pyrrha and Jaune had packed far too much.

A single door down, Team SPGL was just waking up. "Anyone else sleep like a rock?" Clayton asked, rubbing his back.

"Like a baby… Best mattress I've used in years." Pale said as he swung his feet of the side of the bed.

"I've literally slept on a pile of rags that was more comfortable than this. I need a little more cushion." Siniy groaned, as he sat up.

"The mattresses are too soft for my taste… That and I can't stand how big the room feels, I need to be in a closed up space like a bunk or a car." Halcyone said, looking at the mess her bed had become over the course of the night.

"Do you not want it?" Siniy asked.

Halcyone looked at the shorter boy, then shrugged. "Floor under a bunk 'll be more comfortable anyways. Knock yourself out." She said, pulling her sheets and blanket off the bed, then shoving the mattress over to Siniy.

Clayton popped his neck, and looked at the walls. "A hammock would do me some good, make this place just like home." He said, drawing a snort of amusement from Pale.

"Playing into stereotypes, eh jungle boy?" Pale asked, getting an eye roll from Clayton.

"We can solve the bed dilemma later, we've all got class in little under an hour so we need to get showered and into our school uniforms, then down to the main campus before then." Siniy said.

Like a bullet, Halcyone shot toward the bathroom door. "Dibs on the shower!" She shouted, grabbing her uniform, and a towel, before slamming the bathroom door closed. Showers that could last longer than 2 minutes? Halcyone had only dreamed of such a luxury.

Ozpin's eyes ran across the students' files spread out on his glass desk. Now that the prospecting huntsmen and huntresses had completed their initiation, their credentials were of a greater concern to the old headmaster.

Given the colorful assortment of characters, it was bound to be an eventful year. Ozpin Yawned. It was only 9 in the morning and he already needed more coffee.

Grimmology class was the first of many that the training huntsmen and huntresses of Beacon shared. Their professor, Peter Port, was a rotund man in his late 50s, who notably had several fake trophy grimm heads mounted to the classroom wall. "Good morning My young students! Please, take any seat you like. This is a class about killing monsters, no need to make it too orderly." Professor Port said, as the clock struck the hour and he opened the door for the first years of his class.

Teams RWBY and JNPR took the front row seats of the classroom's raised auditorium style benching. SPGL had split up around the room. Clayton sat next to Ruby at the end of the desk just before the middle aisle. Pale had found his seat behind Blake and to her left one space, allowing him to look at her notebook. Siniy had found his place in the middle of the room, and Halcyone plopped down beside him, kicking her bum leg up onto the desk.

"Now then…" Port said, addressing the seated class. "An introduction. Grimm. Demons. Monsters of the night. And to us, huntresses and huntsmen, they are the second most dangerous game we prey upon." Port said, as he paced back and forth across the width of the room. "There are of course many different kinds of grimm, taking both seemingly natural, and unnatural forms. But before we dive deep into the details of every individual grimm you might encounter, you must first know the basics…" Port said, stopping his pacing in front of Yang. "Can anyone tell me why Grimm are attracted to human negativity?" No hands were raised or voices spoken. "Feel free to blurt out an answer if you aren't raising your hands, My eyes aren't what they used to be."

"Um… Professor, sir?" Jaune asked.

"Yes, My boy?" Port asked, turning towards Jaune.

"That's not some kind of trick question right?" Jaune asked. "Grimm aren't attracted to just negative emotions, they're attracted to all of them."

Port grinned. "Smart cookie you are, but does anyone know why that is? How do Grimm see the world?"

Siniy raised his hand before speaking. "The electro-emotional spectrum."

"Which is?" Port asked rolling his hand for someone to continue.

Weiss cleared her throat. "The EEM spectrum is the same as the Electromagnetic spectrum. Emotion is tied to it, with each feeling having an associated color under the visible and invisible light spectrum. Grimm have the ability to see this spectrum in it's associated emotional colors, from frequencies as short as microwaves to as high as ultraviolet. Because humans are highly emotional compared to animals, we stand out against our surroundings to grimm, and when gathered in large numbers emit a kind of light pollution grimm can see from a distance."

"And they eat us, because they're soulless otherworldly creatures of death that feed off emotion." Clayton added.

"Exactly." Port said. "Grimm are, as science has thus far observed, a form of unlife from a world of darkness running parallel with our own that which we've been unable to cross into. They slip through the spaces between, where human life, and so emotion, is sparse, and when they die, they return to it. They seek us out as a food source, and while that may be a frightening prospect, it is important to remember that grimm, though otherworldly, and monstrous in appearance, are not creatures of evil invading our world, they are merely animals that share the world with us in their own way. Their intent is to feed, nothing more, nothing less."

Halcyone spoke up. "If they want to eat, then that must mean they have other needs, so why do they all have no survival instincts? Or do anything other normal animals do?"

Port hummed. "A good question. Firstly, Grimm are not mindless, as many of you who've never fought them might assume. Grimm are actually quite capable of intelligence, the issue is reaching an age that it becomes apparent. Young grimm make up the majority of those you will face. They are inexperienced, freshly spawned into our world. They don't fully realize the dangers posed to them here until they are encountered. The older a grimm gets, the longer it's survived, the more it will have learned, and that makes them far more dangerous than their younger kin, in addition to the mass it will have gained from feeding off emotions. As for their other needs, grimm are not "normal" animals, they do not need hydration, nor sleep, or to reproduce… As far as has been observed in our world." Port cleared his throat. "Of course that is to say for the one thing they do do…" Yang suppressed a laugh. "Grimm will kill and eat any human, or faunus, they can, they do not discriminate. Young, old, healthy, sick, we're all just bags of emotion to them." Port saw a raised hand from Pale.

"Can they see people who are asleep?" Pale asked.

"An excellent question, and the answer is… It depends! For those of us with regular healthy sleep cycles, our emotions level off as we go through the stages of sleep, and increase as we wake, so in deep sleep, to grimm our emotions, and so the light emitted by them, is significantly dimmer. If someone was to experience nightmares or otherwise overly pleasant dreams…" Yang (again) tried not to laugh. "Then grimm might have an easier time seeing someone who is asleep, but it would be nothing compared to a wide awake individual."

Pyrrha raised her hand. "So would taking a nap in the middle of the day be the best way to avoid being seen by grimm? Since the daylight might… Mask the dimmer light of any emotions we're experiencing in our sleep?" She asked, actually interested in the lesson.

"Ah the Vacuo Siesta Theory." Port said. "While many have made claims to it's effectiveness and testing is being conducted, in theory, the only sure way that a grimm would be unable to see a human within line of sight, is if that human was completely without emotion." From his seat, Ren stiffened up. "Of course that's such a rare phenomenon that no data has been collected… Speaking of collections." Port sauntered over to the small cage in the corner of the room behind his desk, the boar shaped grim within grunting angrily at the class. "Live grimm capture, while something the vast majority of you likely will never need to do, is my specialty as a huntsman. To toot my own horn, much of the knowledge we have of grimm comes from huntsmen and huntresses who specialize in the field of live capture like myself. But of course, all grimm die significantly sooner when in captivity than in the wild… Can anyone tell me why that is?" Port asked.

"Because they can't eat people, or emotions?" Halcyone asked.

Port tisked at that. "Ohh, close, but not quite. Grimm in the wild may go as long as decades without feeding on a physical human body with active emotions, because they can absorb lingering feelings from their surroundings, like people do with sunlight for vitamin D. Places that have seen great suffering often times become nests for grimm that take in what emotions remain for this reason. Grimm in captivity while of course not eating, are able to absorb the spectrum of emotions from the people around them, and so when they die, it is an active choice made to return to the realm they call home."

Port cleared his throat as he approached the boarbatusk in it's cage. "Now, who among you believes that they know enough about the grimm to fight one for the class?"

Not a half second later did Weiss Schnee shoot up out of her seat, hand raised. "I do sir!" She nearly shouted.

"What's eatin' her up?" Halcyone asked her partner.

"She's got something to prove, that much is for sure." Siniy said, getting a chuckle from the girl of team SPGL.

Professor Port smirked from under his mustache. "Well, let's find out. Retrieve your weapon, and face your opponent." He said.

Weiss changed into her combat attire when she retrieved her weapon, then walked out to the front of the class, and raised her rapier. She was confident of her own abilities. Who cared if everyone looked at her with contempt. She'd prove to all of them that Weiss Schnee didn't need a partner or a teammate to take on a single grimm. Looking at the rest of the class, she noticed that the only students even watching her other than her team, were the short bear faunus, Ruby's pet monkey, and the dirty girl with the golden face scarf. She sneered, and returned her focus to the cage in front of her. "Feral animals and gutter trash, all of them." Weiss thought, as Professor Port chopped the lock off the cage.

The fight was on, and the Boar charged out of it's enclosure towards Weiss. Realizing that it was moving far too fast for any proper intercept, Weiss stepped left out of the way of the creature's tusks as it tried to gore her. She managed a glancing blow on the grimm's right shoulder, though the bony armor there prevented the blade from cutting flesh. If her sword was a saber, or a machete like Halcyone's then maybe a good wound up swing would have chopped through, but her rapier, a fencing sword by design, was only sharpened halfway down the blade, and didn't carry enough energy with it for the task at hand. It was a thin weapon meant to be thrust into the gaps that existed in a set of armor.

The boar charged again, and this time Weiss held her ground, attempting to pierce the monster's bone covered face with the point of Myrtenaster. The blade slid off the plating to the left and the arched guard found its way into the enameled right tusk of the boar, the weapon's sharp edge digging into the tooth, locking Weiss's wrist at an odd angle. Grabbing her blade's handle with both hands, Weiss tried pulling her weapon free, only for the boarbatusk to shake it's head, violently dislodging the blade, causing it to leave Weiss's hands.

Having lost her weapon, Weiss stepped back a pace, before the boarbatusk went into a rolling charge. She tried to dodge the boar, only to be slammed into due to the close proximity, and was sent flying against the far wall of the room, the air knocked form her lungs. Seeing stars, Weiss slowly realized the boar was lining up another charge. Her aura was low, her weapon was gone, but she could still do this, she had her semblance… Still, she expected somebody to have tried helping her by now.

Someone did in fact help her, but it wasn't who Weiss thought it'd be. There was a loud gunshot, and a cloud of smoke from behind team RWBY. The students who did not have their auras active, slapped their hands over their ears in pain from the sound of a gun discharging in an enclosed space. Looking to the second row of seats, everyone saw that Pale had stood up and drawn a snub nose .31 caliber 5 shot pre-war "Wells" revolver, hidden up his sleeve on a sliding rail. The single bullet he'd fired tore into the rear left leg of the boarbatusk, causing it to fall face first to the floor, before limply trying to stand up.

Without a word, Pale jerked his arm back and the revolver slipped up his sleeve, and sat down. While almost everyone was shocked by his sudden action, Pale of course had his reasons. It wouldn't do well to have a dead girl on his conscience. Of course, he wasn't trying to steal the heiress's kill, and so the boar squealed in pain.

Weiss stood up from against the wall, and picked up her sword. With Pale's shot placement the boarbatusk had lost motor control of its back feet, and was dragging its upper body now. With a grunt, Weiss shoved Myrtenaster deep into the armpit of the grimm, killing it instantly. Professor Port laughed heartily before speaking. "Bravo. Bravo to both Miss. Schnee and Mr. Lee. We have the makings of both a fine huntress and huntsman. But I'm afraid that's all the time we have for today. Be sure to cover the assigned readings, and as Mr. Lee has reminded us, stay vigilant, and watch out for those around you. Class dismissed." Port said, allowing his student's to leave the room two minutes before the bell.

"What was that, man?" Clayton asked Pale, as Weiss stormed off down the hall in a huff, Ruby running off after her to wrangle in her partner. Pale raised an eyebrow.

"Pardon my ill developed intuition when it comes to faunus human relations, but I'm havin' a hard time believing you're a bad enough man to really want her dead, even if she is a prat and your people's worst enemy." Pale said.

"My people?" Clayton asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Yeah, your people, the faunus." Pale said with a hand wave.

"There is no, my people, Pale. Sure she's a Schnee, and a racist, and an entitled brat, but she's no different on the inside than any of the worst faunus out there." Clayton said, only for Pale to scoff.

"Believe me, I've seen that… Still though, I'm surprised you wanted that boar to get to her." Pale said.

Clayton shook his head. "I don't care what happens to her. I'm not going to try hurting her just because she's a bitch, but I'm not going to help her either." Clayton said.

Siniy grunted. "My better sense of altruism wants to show kindness to her, but my pragmatic side wants to let her fend for herself if she's not asking for assistance." He said.

Halcyone chuckled. "Look at this team, coming together over a mutual hatred of somebody else." She said with a smile.

Siniy tilted his head back and forth. "I wouldn't call my feelings on Weiss hatred. More like… Disappointment."

"You thought the tabloids were lies, and she'd be more like her dad?" Clayton asked.

Siniy shrugged. "Yeah, he seems like a nice guy. Can't imagine why she of all people would turn out so bad."

Far ahead down the hall, Ruby caught up with Weiss. "What was that?" Ruby asked her partner. "Why'd you storm off on your team like that?"

"That? That was me being humiliated in front of the entire class. That's what that was." Weiss said, not bothering to look at Ruby as she walked.

"You're upset because somebody helped you?" Ruby asked in confusion. "We're a team Weiss. It's perfectly fine to ask for help on a team." Ruby said with a sigh, only to be cut off.

"That Anima ruffian isn't on our team…" Weiss said, stopping all movement, clenching her fists.

"And none of you lifted so much as a finger to help me. Even if I didn't ask, I expected one of my team, at the least, to do something. But you, your sister, and the shy girl, would rather watch me get impaled wouldn't you… I might accept the fact you're my leader, but you're doing a pretty bad job of it so far if leaving me for dead is how you operate." Weiss said, walking off, leaving Ruby to think about what her partner had said.

Ruby and Clayton sat apart from their teams at dinner. Neither really prepared to deal with Weiss and Pale. It was like white was a marker for being an asshole or something. "Weiss was upset that your partner helped her in class." Ruby said, sitting down with a glass of milk.

"I was a little upset with him too." Clayton admitted as he bit into his apple.

"Why? He did the right thing helping her. That was heroic of him." Ruby said in confusion.

"If Weiss is going to be a huntress, she needs to be able to take care of a single trash level grimm on her own." Clayton said with a shrug.

"Are you sure you didn't just want to see her get hurt for being mean to you before initiation?" Ruby asked.

Clayton sighed. "Maybe a little, but it's not like it's undeserved."

Ruby shook her head at her boyfriend's words. Clayton was a good guy, and although his view on humans and faunus was complex compared to most, he wasn't above hating Weiss as it seemed. "I talked with her during initiation. She's not going to say or do anything to any faunus so long as she's on my team… I expect that you will give her the same courtesy." Ruby said, before she started sipping on her milk.

Clayton huffed. "So long as she doesn't do anything, neither will I." As a reward for his promise, Ruby gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Weiss wasn't going to just skip dinner. She'd sat far away from her team, and everyone else for that matter, wanting not to be disturbed. Unfortunately, Pale chose that moment to sit down across the table from her. There was a silent few seconds where the two just ate, until Weiss got tired of his game.

"If you shot that grimm in class because you like me or something, forget it. I'm not interested in hicks." Weiss said, only for Pale to chuckle.

"I shot that grimm because if it killed you I'd be down the only other intelligent human here." Pale said, earning a scoff from Weiss.

"Dissatisfied with your team as well?" Weiss asked, holding up her fork.

"Could do with a few less faunus, but Clayton seems like one of the few that knows how to be amicable with humans." Pale said, causing Weiss to look up from her meal.

"Why are you talking to me?" Weiss asked.

Pale shrugged before responding. "Way I see it, the two of us clearly ain't fond of our teams and I'd rather have a friend who I don't have to worry about turning on me." Pale said, holding out a hand. "So whaddya say?" He asked, only for Weiss to slap his hand away.

"I don't want your pity." She hissed, before standing up with her tray, and leaving the cafeteria, she was too emotional to be making a decision on who she could trust at the moment.

Clayton and Ruby saw the exchange, and though they didn't know what words were spoken, sighed as they saw Weiss hit Pale. "I'm starting to think Weiss just hates everybody." Ruby said.
