"Nothing good ever comes from a random talk in the middle of the night," Adam said half-jokingly, sitting beside her on the bed.

Moonlight poured in from the window, carving his figure out of the darkness. The red in his hair darkened to a deep velvet, and his blue eye seemed so much richer than it was in daylight. Weiss ignored the drumming in her chest and stared down at her hands.

"I have a question," she began tentatively. "I want you to be completely honest with me."

"Okay." He sounded wary again.

"Do you really want to go with us on this journey?"

"Of course I do–"

"What if I wasn't there?"

As expected, Adam didn't answer right away. He took a sudden interest in studying his bed sheets.

"I overheard what you were talking about with Robyn," she confessed. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, but it got me thinking…"

"Weiss, it doesn't matter. I knew what I was doing when I agreed to leave with you." He turned his eyes back on her. "I don't want to let you face that witch alone."

"That's the thing, though. I'm not alone. I have my entire team by my side, and even if we get split up, I'm not helpless.

"But do you know who can't defend themselves? The hundreds of Faunus suffering because of people like my father. They could use someone like you to help them."

"They have people like Robyn looking out for them. They don't need me."

"But you want to be there to help them, right?"

"I–!" He raked a hand through his hair, leaving those deep crimson locks dishevelled. "Fine, you're right. But it doesn't matter when you're facing some immortal witch."

"It matters to me. You didn't sign up for this fight, but I did. I know how much helping the Faunus means to you, and I'm not forcing you to put your life on hold for me."

"You're not forcing me to do anything–"

"I can tell how much you want to help Robyn. We both know what you can do for your community if you stay and continue working with her."

"So what? You just want me to let you go?"

She wanted him to stay with her. Weiss kept a firm lid on the anguish cries of her heart.

"I want you to pursue something you're passionate about," she said instead.

"And what if something happens to you?" he challenged. "What if I'm not there to protect you when you need me the most?"

"What if you die trying to protect me? How are you going to help your people if you're dead? They need you here, Adam."

"Has it ever occurred to you that I don't want to lose you too?" He pressed a desperate kiss against her lips.

Her senses were overwhelmed by the scent of pine clinging to him. The taste of mint on his tongue left her hungry for more.

Weiss almost caved. With her senses focused on him, it was tempting to accept his sacrifice and keep him by her side. Being selfish couldn't be that bad if he accepted what he was giving up for her. It wasn't like she demanded him–

No. She couldn't do that to him. Not after everything he's been through.

Weiss forced herself to pull away.

"I want you to live for yourself from here on out. Not just for me," she whispered, kissing the scarred half of Adam's face. "You've fought so many difficult battles already. You don't have to shoulder a new burden. Let me protect you for once."

"And what if you don't come back?" He leaned back, keeping his head down. "You can't promise me you'll be alive at the end of this. You don't know that."

"Listen to me." She held his face and tilted his head up to look at her. "I'll gladly lay down my life if it means you'll have a future to look forward to."

"You're speaking like it's your funeral..."

"It's like you said, I don't know what will happen to me at the end of this." She smiled bitterly. "Can you please promise you'll live your best life with or without me?"

"I can't make that promise, Weiss." He pulled away from her hands, but she held firm.

"You told me that you wanted your life back. Now's your chance to create a new path and redefine your future. I don't want you to lose everything for me."

"I don't want a future without you in it."

He took one of her hands off his face and held it. His grip was tight as if fearing she'd vanish into thin air.

"I'll always be with you in some way." She kissed his cheek. "Do you know what I want? More than anything in the world?"

"What?" he asked in a whisper.

"I want to see you doing what makes you happy in life. I want you to take Robyn's offer and pursue something you're passionate about. You've done so much for me. Let me worry about this whole Salem mess and fight on your behalf. I'll be okay."

He sighed, resting his head against hers. The scent of pine surrounded her in a mournful embrace. A lump formed at the back of her throat, growing bigger and bigger the longer he studied her.

"Is that what you want, Weiss?"

She clenched her teeth and nodded. If she spoke out aloud, her selfish desires would confess how much it hurt to leave him like this.

"Be honest with me."

She locked her jaw shut even tighter. The lump in her throat grew so big it flooded her eyes with tears.

"Talk to me, Weiss. Don't push me away like this."

"I'm scared too," she confessed in a quiet whimper. "But I want to see you happy. I mean everything I say, honestly, I do. It's just…"

She swallowed, the words completely lost on her.

"It's hard to say goodbye without knowing..." he breathed.

"Yeah."

It felt like they were running on a timer closing in on zero.

"If I do this…you promise you won't regret it?"

"I know I won't regret it."

He kissed her cheek.

"Fine." He kissed her again on the forehead. "I promise I'll live my best life from this point onwards. With or without you in it."

Weiss wasn't sure if she wanted to cry out in despair or laugh in relief, so she did both.

"T-thank you," she sniffled, wiping her cheeks dry with the back of her free hand.

Goosebumps travelled up her bare arm when he circled his thumb over her inner wrist.

"Promise me you'll try your best to come back. No more self-sacrificing bullshit."

Weiss laughed at the familiar words. Her chest felt so much lighter when it managed to elicit a smile from him as well.

"I promise," she answered with full sincerity.

"Good. I'll be waiting for you to come home." He pulled her towards him and captured her in another kiss.

This kiss was different from all the others he'd ever given. The sense of finality made it all the more demanding than ever before. He kissed her like it was the last time he'd ever get to do it, exploring every inch of her mouth with his lips and tongue. She reciprocated his enthusiasm, trying to memorise him while she still had him in front of her.

He dragged his teeth over her lower lip when he pulled back, completely unaware of the way he left her heart racing.

Was this going to be their last kiss?

If she didn't survive, there wouldn't be another chance to kiss. There would be no more tender touches, no more warm hugs. Nothing.

Weiss latched onto his shoulders and closed the distance between them again. Her arms and legs moved on their own accord, crawling onto him until she straddled his lap. Even with him sitting beneath her, she was still hungry for more – she needed more.

There was just enough time left to memorise him with her kisses.

Their ticking time limit gave Weiss the courage to trail her kisses up his jawline to his ear. Weiss kissed his earlobe, her heart soaring when Adam inhaled sharply because of her.

Weiss feathered slow kisses down his neck, taking her time to memorise how he felt on her lips, relishing in how his breathing quickened with every teasing lick of her tongue.

The scent of his shampoo surrounded her when she got to the base of his neck. She remembered how his teeth skimmed her lower lip with an excited flutter in her chest. Weiss lightly sunk her teeth into him, grinning when he let out a low moan. She kissed the spot he loved so much before moving to the other side.

She pulled away only to catch her breath, lips still burning from the feel of his skin. Her body shivered with excitement when his hands trailed down her spine, gliding under her thighs, down her calves, and finally arriving at her ankles.

Her mind went silent when his hands slipped underneath her nightgown. The feel of his fingers skating up her legs was electric. Weiss couldn't remember ever feeling so weak for another's touch.

Adam paused when his hands neared her upper thighs. Weiss squirmed impatiently on his lap.

"If you want me to stop, just say the word. I'll back off," he whispered in a low husky voice.

"Please don't stop." There was still so much she needed to know about him. He couldn't stop now.

He smiled, kissing her on the lips. "I didn't know you were so bold."

"And I didn't know you were such a tease." Her breath hitched when his hands climbed the rest of their way up her legs. His touch left parts of her aching for more.

"Good things come to those who wait," he taunted playfully.

"I don't know about you, but I don't want to spend this entire night waiting."

They didn't have the time to wait. If this was their last night together, she wanted to leave knowing every part of him now. Adam looked at her with a new spark of intensity in his eye.

"If you wanted me so badly, all you needed to do was ask," he teased.

Her nightgown raised as his hands climbed up her sides.

"Please," she breathed.

He answered her request.

Beneath the glow of silver light, he made love to her for the first time.
