Tell me, is this getting boring? Cause I'm only getting started!
Luke? Who's he? Probably not owned by anyone else, maybe the name, but the character is something else entirely.
Luke stared in astonishment at the figure who had emerged from the once-opaque mist. The woman, now unveiled, radiated an air of regality intertwined with the essence of a seasoned warrior. Her armor bore a striking resemblance to Diana's initial attire when he first encountered her. However, this woman's armor gleamed with a luxurious blend of gold and bronze, accentuated by a flowing cape crafted from animal hide and fur. Luke found himself wordless as this formidable woman approached the duo, each of whom reacted distinctly to her arrival.
"Diana, what's happening?" He inquired in a hushed tone, aiming to prevent any inadvertent hostility.
Diana remained momentarily taken aback before she sighed, her resistance giving way. "Luke, this... is my Mother," she admitted, her gaze lowered as her mother stood at her side. As the mist lifted, a gathering of Amazonian women, all robust and imposing, came into view, attired in a manner reminiscent of Diana's mother.
A gasp escaped Luke's lips, his body tensing as he grappled with the reality of meeting his friend's mother for the first time. "Diana, no offense, but your mom looks like a final boss."
Disregarding his comment, the woman found it appropriate to extend an introduction to this unfamiliar individual associated with her daughter. "I am Queen Hippolyta, sovereign of the Amazons from the realm of Themyscira. And who might you be?"
Luke couldn't help but discern a tinge of venom in her tone, as if her words were laced with spite directed his way. Uncertain if she sought to intimidate him, he nevertheless marshaled his composure. Suppressing his apprehension, he responded to the imposing woman.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, your majesty." Striving to convey respect, he offered a subtle bow, hoping to strike a favorable impression. "I go by Lucas, and I'm somewhat acquainted with your daughter."
The queen's countenance registered a flicker of anger—had he said something to provoke her? He mentally reviewed his words, attempting to discern any inadvertent offense toward the formidable figure before him. Meanwhile, Diana, her head slightly raised, observed the unfolding interaction.
"You dare! My child shall not fraternize with someone the likes of you—a man!" Luke stood, his bewilderment and anxiety palpable. Was it simply his gender that had provoked such ire? He surmised that, originating from a society devoid of males, the Amazons might harbor a disdain for what they perceived as a lesser gender: men.
"And you, young lady. Words fail to express my disappointment in your insolent conduct." Diana winced, her silence serving as an acknowledgment of her transgressions. Sympathy welled up within Luke; he felt bad for her, yet recognized the prudence in maintaining silence.
"Disguising yourself as a warrior, participating in the Athena and Aphrodite tournament against my explicit wishes, and departing Themyscira without seeking my consent!" With each enumerated infraction, the Queen's stern posture seemed to deepen, each point an indictment against her daughter's actions. Luke blinked, disbelief morphing into comprehension.
"Wait a moment... Diana, you ran away?" He voiced his incredulity, aghast at the revelation. "I thought you said it was your mission to save the world of man?" The Queen dismissed his inquiry with a derisive snort.
"This insolent child possesses no such mission or destiny to fulfill. As a princess, you have brought disgrace upon our people." Queen Hippolyta's arms crossed, dismissing Luke's notion that Diana had abandoned her home with the noble goal of safeguarding humankind.
"So it was all a lie? Have I been right all along, Diana? Were your claims about heroism, team formation, and the salvation of this city mere falsehoods?" Anger surged within Luke; while he regretted his prior reproaches, his skepticism had, apparently, been well-founded from the outset. Had their endeavors been futile? Were Diana's motivations purely self-indulgent, driven by a desire to fulfill her own dream, with their roles as superficial heroes? Doubt crept into his mind, casting uncertainty upon his prior judgments and chastisements of his companions.
"Is what this man says true, Diana? Did you truly lead others astray with the promise of a loftier purpose?" Queen Hippolyta's words bore weight, and as Diana's tear-filled gaze met Luke's crestfallen expression, she appealed for his faith amidst the turmoil.
"No! Lucas, while it may appear that I embellished the truth, my convictions remain valid. I genuinely believe our destinies are intertwined with heroism. Can you find it within yourself to believe in me once more?" Her plea hung in the air, Luke's countenance marked by a mixture of defeat and contemplation, his eyes mirroring an internal struggle as he faced her.
"I... I don't know anymore." He plainly said with blankness portraying his features. Diana felt grief, she didn't lie, she merely exaggerated the truth from her friends, yet as though her decision to be brave and desire to be heroic was met with a distasteful resentment coming from the only man she befriended.
"Come, Diana. It is time to return home and accept your punishment. I shall not let you continue with your silly fantasies by leading others astray." Diana's mother pinched her ears as she protested and was dragged away along with the other battalion women.
"You are grounded for the rest of your immortal life, young lady. And you, representative of this world, on behalf of my daughter I see that I must extend an apology for any misconduct she has committed." Diana kept wincing in pain as her feet skidded on the ground, with one last tearful look at Luke, she saw he only bore malice and regret as he watched her get taken away back to her home.
Several minutes passed after Luke's encounter with Diana's mother, and finally, a sense of clarity began to wash over him. His mind was a whirlwind of emotions as he replayed the conversation in his head.
Gone were the illusions of grand missions and destinies waiting to be fulfilled. The notion of being the lone hero team, bravely upholding justice in the city, seemed to fade away. Metropolis had its share of hidden heroes, and it certainly didn't require the somewhat unconventional assistance of a stretchy, teenage protagonist dealing with his own inner turmoil.
Although the rain had ceased some time ago, the brooding atmosphere persisted, casting a solemn veil over the aftermath of the harrowing encounter that had unfolded earlier.
With a heavy heart, he changed out of his battle-worn attire amid the ruins of the once-vibrant Sweet Justice. Seated upon a pile of rubble, he appeared lost in contemplation, grappling with the uncertainty that loomed ahead. Retrieving his phone from his pocket, he dialed one of the few numbers he trusted and waited, the ringing echoing in the hollow silence until a voice broke through.
"Luke, sweetheart, where on earth have you been? It's getting quite late, and you haven't even checked in to let me know what's keeping you out for so long."
The soothing sound of his mother's voice worked like a balm on his frayed nerves. Drawing a deep breath, he replied, feeling a sense of relief wash over him.
"Hey, Mom, I'm sorry about that. But could you come pick me up?"
"Honey, is everything alright? You sound a little... distressed."
"Yeah, yeah, it's nothing major. I'm just feeling a bit down, that's all."
"Alright, Luke. Tell me your location, and I'll be there to get you."
Before long, Luke found himself in his mother's car, the vehicle moving in the direction of their home. Angel observed the melancholic expression etched across her son's face, a stark departure from his usual demeanor. She couldn't help but wonder why he had been present at the decimated Sweet Justice, especially considering his tendency to keep to himself.
The journey passed in a heavy silence, both Luke and his mother grappling with their own thoughts, each reluctant to initiate the conversation they both knew needed to take place.
Concern for her only child weighed heavily on Angel's mind. She hadn't seen him this troubled since the tragic incident that had torn their family apart. The topic was delicate, laden with painful memories they both preferred to keep buried.
"Luke, are you truly alright?" Angel's gentle voice finally broke the silence as she delved into the heart of her son's distress.
"I'm holding up, Mom, just... wrestling with some things. You know how it is," he responded, his voice betraying a hint of unease as he shifted in his seat.
"Don't try to hide it, my gummy bear. A mother knows when her child is troubled. It's better to share your concerns, so I can help. I hate seeing you like this. I only want what's best for you," she reassured him, her words carrying a blend of compassion and understanding. Luke sighed, realizing that disappointing his mom would only add to his woes.
"It's complicated. I'm at a crossroads, Mom. I don't really know what I'm supposed to do now," he confessed, a mixture of emotions flickering in his eyes as he recounted the events of the day, albeit with a hint of hesitancy.
Observing her son's turmoil, Angel brought the car to a stop, her full attention focused on him.
"Take your time, Luke. There's no rush. I'll be by your side every step of the way, alright?" Her warm smile, capable of calming even the fiercest storms, worked its magic, easing Luke's inner turmoil as he began to open up.
"It's about today, earlier. Following your advice, I tried to make some friends," he began, a glimmer of hope in his voice, but he knew his revelation would take a somber turn.
A gasp escaped Angel's lips as she caught on, her smile fading into concern. "Oh, Lucas O'Neil, that's wonderful! But I sense there's more to the story, isn't there?"
"It didn't exactly go smoothly. We got off to a rocky start, and we were at each other's throats for most of the day. But... there were moments, Mom, moments when I actually felt a connection. It was fun, memorable," he confessed, pulling out a slip of photos taken with his newfound companions at the pier. His gaze lingered on the images, a pang of guilt tugging at his heart. Each photo captured a fleeting bond formed amidst the chaos of the day.
'I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss them,' he mused, a wistful smile playing on his lips as he traced the contours of each face in the photographs.
Karen's cute reclusive nature was something he both chided and related with the smallest girl in the group. Jess' adamant stance towards her beliefs was intriguing but also commendable for she sticks with her guns even when time's get a little rough. Zee's overabundance of tricks and bedazzlement was entertaining when their lives weren't on the line, her passion for her crafts was something he was truly jealous of. Kara's strong and tough exterior blanketed her soft and vulnerable side, he felt slight remorse after the moment they shared when their insecurities were out on display. Barbara's antics were a little too much for him to handle, but he knows it was all for the greater good. She didn't just want to make her dream team a reality but she truly did want to make a difference by being heroes. He knew he went a little too far by saying all those rude things about the team, and he still doesn't know how to rectify his wrongs and reconcile with the girls. Lastly, there was Diana, what was he supposed to say about her? Did he find her ignorance of the modern world charming? Did he still hold apprehensions about the falsehoods of her reason for being? Was he too disturbed about the whole experience to notice how little his problems were compared to the rest of them?
A grin surfaced as he remembered the camaraderie they'd shared, only for it to give way to a frown as the memory of their falling out resurfaced.
"Just recently, things took a turn for the worse. It was my fault, Mom. I might have ruined any chance of reconciliation, and I might never see one of them ever again." Luke's voice quivered with a mix of regret and anxiety as he bared his soul to his mother, laying his vulnerabilities bare.
Angel listened intently as Luke poured out his heart, revealing the turmoil he had been grappling with. Her heart ached for her son, who was now showing emotions she thought he had long buried.
"I feel like such an idiot, a failure. And sometimes, I wonder if I'm the reason Dad isn't here anymore," he confessed, his voice cracking as he recalled the cherished memories of his father, memories tinged with pain.
A surge of empathy coursed through Angel's veins, her resolve strengthening. She couldn't let her son suffer in silence, not again. As the conversation ventured into delicate territory, she knew it was a conversation they both needed to have.
"Luke, my dear, look at me," she implored gently, her eyes locking with his. "I believe it's time you know what exactly happened to your father."
A solemn hush settled over the car as Angel began recounting the events of that fateful night, the night that had forever altered their lives.
"It was an ordinary evening when Pat called me on the phone. His voice trembled as he told me that something had happened to you. I rushed to the hospital, my heart pounding as I saw you lying there, your body... changing. Your father was by your side the whole time, murmuring words of love and reassurance as we waited for answers."
Luke's grip tightened on his mother's shoulder, seeking comfort and strength as her words stirred memories that had long been locked away.
"The doctors struggled to understand what was happening to you. It was a harrowing time, Luke, filled with uncertainty and fear. But your father, he never left your side. He believed in you, and he believed that you would overcome whatever challenge life had thrown your way."
"But then he forgot to take care of himself, it wasn't long before I got a call from the hospital that told me your father collapsed. I was heartbroken, fearing for the state of the two boys I love the most in my life, Luke. I was depressed for a while when the news of your father's passing reached my ears. I couldn't eat, nor did I sleep, I lost the love of my life, and I felt like I couldn't go on any longer. That is until I heard that you awoke not long after your dad passed. I was mad at myself, believing to be so selfish by leaving you behind, I got my act together and decided to do my very best so that I can love you twice as much for both your father and me. I never told you what happened to him for I didn't want you to blame yourself, and he wouldn't want you to think you're responsible for what happened."
Angel finished, and although it wasn't entirely what Luke expected to have happened it still tug a chord inside him. All this time he thought his father died due to his incompetence. But in truth, he was in an unfortunate accident that caused the tear in his family, he started shaking as the thoughts of his Dad's words resonated deep inside him. He loved him, he cared for him so much that he remained by his side no matter what. It didn't matter what he thought of what happened before all this mess, what truly mattered was that his parents truly did love him with all their hearts.
"Luke, sweetie, are you gonna be okay?" Angel asked to which Luke responded by embracing his only remaining family member.
"Never better, Mom." The two kept their hold for a few moments before Luke turned back to the photo in his hands. He looked it over once more as he found his resolve.
"I know what I have to do now." He got out of the car and was about to make a sprint for it but Angel stopped him in his tracks as she fetched something from the glove compartment.
"Gummy bear, one more thing!" Halting his run, he went back and was presented with a peculiar item courtesy of his mother.
"What's that?"
"It was your father's. He would've wanted you to have it." Angel gave him a pair of goggles, it had thick black lenses and a silver frame. As he held the object in his hands, he felt touched and wore the safety glasses. It fit him well as he felt a nostalgic feeling from adorning the headgear.
"Now go be a hero, Lucas." His mother told him as he gaped at the secret he was trying so hard to hide from her was uncovered just like that.
"Y-you knew?" Luke stuttered as he felt tense but he should've seen this coming considering who he was dealing with.
"Oh, gummy bear, a mother always knows. I'll see you in the morning, take as much time as you need to get your friends back." Although she should be worried for her son's safety due to how late it was getting, but if Luke was anything like his Dad then she had absolute faith in him.
"And also, you should smile more, it suits you."
"I will, Mom, and thanks... for everything," Luke said his goodbyes for the moment as he slung himself toward the direction of the pier. Angel watched her son leave with haste, on e he was out of earshot her expression turned sour and morose.
"I'm sorry, Lucas, but this is for the best. I swear, one day when you're ready, I'll tell you truth. But for now, I hope this little lie will help you on your way." A pang of guilt struck her core, geting in her car, she drove off but not without the feeling of regret and sadness filling her insides.
Harnessing every ounce of his malleable body's potential, he propelled himself forward, a symphony of motion playing out as he ran, stretched, twisted, and turned, his form bending and springing with remarkable agility. In less than a minute, he found himself standing on the sandy shores where the Amazonian ship had previously docked.
"Since I only know the direction Diana's headed, I guess I should start with her first. The only thing is, how am I supposed to follow the ship?" He wondered.
Looking at his arm, he contorted it into various shapes and sizes. Thinking of a way to traverse the vast ocean in hopes of finding a dear friend of his, hopefully the feeling was still mutual.
"Alright, Luke, you survived exploding, had near-death experiences many times, and can basically become anything you can imagine. What's the best way to go about this problem?... Wait a minute." It dawned on him as his body transformed.
First into a ship, "Hmm, this could travel across the sea, but it would be a little dangerous considering I haven't ridden a boat in a while."
Second, a kite, "Better, but it would be hard to control where I'm headed, I'll just be at the mercy of the winds. Hold up, idea!"
With one last transformation, he found his forming sufficient in tackling his current predicament.
"Hang on, Diana. I'm coming to save the day." He said before lifting off in search of the Amazonian vessel carrying his teammate.
Meanwhile, on board the mentioned mode of transportation, we see Diana bearing a solemn expression. Her form looked defeated and distraught as the day's events took a toll on her both emotionally and physically.
She didn't have the strength to counter her mother's arguments about her disobedience nor did she desire to do so. She ruined her destiny, she lost her team, but the worst mistake she made was lying to her friends.
'Forgive me, sisters. And Luke, I can never atone for the false hope I brought unto you.' She despondently thought, her body shriveled further as the waves crashed against the wooden ship. However, unbeknownst to the Amazonian Princess, an approaching figure loomed near the vessel as it drew closer and closer.
"Phew, finally caught up to her." Luke drew a breath of relief. His body changed akin to an animal of aviary descent. A duck, he turned into a duck, with a bunch of other ducks following his lead as the flock made a V-shape.
"It was a pleasure flying with you gents, but it's time for me to doo-doo, what I doo-doo best." He dove down, leaving the other ducks behind.
'All is lost!' The other ducks metaphorically screamed as they aimlessly scattered to who knows where.
In his bird form, he discreetly landed on the crow's nest as he surveyed the spread of Amazons atop the deck.
"Phase One, find the ship complete. Now for Phase Two... Honestly, I didn't think I could get this far." He thought long and hard about how he was gonna go about this situation.
There was no way the Queen would allow him to take away her daughter under her watchful eyes, and although he believed in his versatility, it was impossible to win in a fight against these seasoned warriors who could probably snap a normal person in half without trying.
When he saw Diana, he noticed how dejected she looked. He felt even more of a jerk than before, and all because he was too uptight about opening up, thankfully that's about to change. He may not be able to contend against these muscular women in a bout of physical prowess, but maybe he could distract them while grabbing Diana with no one the wiser.
"Okay, unintentional Phase Three, distract the Amazons to rescue Diana from the clutches of her high-strung mother while also thinking of a shorter name for this mission is a go!"
While the Amazons were going about their business a sound emanated which caught their attention.
Quack*
They turned towards the one responsible for the sudden noise and saw a strange entity at the stern of their ship.
"What in the name of Hades is that thing?" One of them asked.
"Looks like a bird." Another answered.
"Thank the gods, I was starting to feel a little peckish." A third one chimed in, wanting to feast upon the avian intruder for a quick snack.
Sensing the imminent danger, Luke barely avoided the attack as one of the warriors launched her spear at him.
A sweatdrop made him realize how badly things were gonna turn out, but he wasn't gonna back down now. His bird body flew a few meters above the ground, just high enough to avoid the Amazon's reach. However, what they don't know was that the duck Luke was just a decoy, he merely extended a part of himself to distract the warriors while his main body crept closer to Diana who ignored the situation happening aboard the ship.
"Psst..." He called out in a hushed tone, while the recipient remained unmoving.
"Psst, hey, Diana..." Luke guessed that his distraction may not keep the others for long, he risked out by jumping on the vessel. Believing that the coast was clear, he threaded quietly towards the dejected princess.
Making himself smaller by shrinking his body, he went up to Diana and called her out.
"Diana!" He screamed, albeit as quietly as he could which finally got her attention.
She looked around, trying to find the source of the voice calling out her name before a tap on her arm shifted her focus.
"Brother Luke?!" She screamed out partway before covering her mouth. Glad that the others didn't overhear her, especially her mother, she turned back to Luke.
"Why are you here?"
"I'm here to sneak you out." He whispered while returning to normal size but still laid low to avoid suspicion.
Diana would've been overjoyed, but the events from before reeled her back.
"Why are you doing this, Luke? Do you not have any transgressions towards me? Because of my ineptitude, I made you think negatively about heroism. For what reason are you compelled to do anything at all for my sake?"
It took him a few seconds before he gathered his courage and replied, "Yeah, you did kind of mess up. But I screwed up worse big time." Diana raised a brow, confusion plastered all over her face.
"Look, Diana, I'm not a good guy, not in the least. I was a huge jerk to you girls before and it's only fitting for me to beg for your forgiveness."
"Luke, no, it was not your fault. It was I that-" Luke cut her off, he didn't want the girls to take the blame for his misdeeds. It's time for him to man up and be responsible for his actions for once.
"Diana, please let me finish."
She wanted to protest against his wishes, but she saw how serious he was about letting it all out. With a slight nod, she let him continue.
"Sure, you did betray our trust after the whole 'not being your destiny to save the world of man' thing. But it was I that let loose and hurt all of your feelings in the process. As I said, I was unhinged since I've never felt that way before with anyone else. Usually, I'm locked up in my room doing my own thing, being by my lonesome, but hanging out and training with you girls, it made me realize the difference between light and day. You girls were the chocolate on my sundae, the icing on my cake, and I haven't had that much fun in years. Diana, I know that I'm not worthy of your forgiveness after everything I've said, but I hope to try and make amends with you by saying that you were right. We are destined for greatness, we can be heroes and most of all, we are a super awesome team. You are the bravest and strongest of us all, Diana, not to mention beautiful and smart as well. So won't you please come back and be our leader again, oh great and powerful Wonder Woman?"
Diana found herself at a loss for words in the wake of Luke's heartfelt confession. His vulnerable display had left her utterly speechless, her mind struggling to process the surge of emotions washing over her. Unable to form a coherent response, her cheeks warmed with a blush as his eloquent and charming words resonated with her deeply. The sincerity with which he praised her beauty and intellect sent a tingling sensation down her spine, bolstering her own self-confidence. What struck her most was his unwavering belief in both her and their team, igniting a newfound determination within her.
With a renewed sense of purpose, Diana rose to her feet, her resolve unwavering as she met Luke's gaze. "Lucas, you're absolutely right," she affirmed with unwavering conviction. "I refuse to abandon our mission or our team. Despite my imperfections, together we can overcome any challenges by placing our trust in one another. I am committed to our cause, Brother Luke. However, the formidable challenge that remains is freeing myself from the powerful grasp of my mother."
"You will do no such thing!"
A commanding voice reverberated behind them, shattering the moment. Both Diana and Luke turned to behold the imposing figures of the Amazon warriors, standing in a formidable formation. At the forefront stood Queen Hippolyta, exuding an aura of regal authority that was as imposing as it was dignified. Without hesitation, she reached for Luke's ears, prompting a yelp of pain as she physically separated him from her daughter.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch!"
The pair tensed, their hearts pounding as the weight of the situation dawned upon them. Before them stood the powerful Amazon warriors, a force to be reckoned with. Queen Hippolyta's commanding presence was matched only by her fury, as she sternly addressed Luke's intrusion.
"How dare you trespass upon my domain without my consent. I will not permit a man to corrupt my daughter any longer. Cast him into the depths, to be devoured by the ocean beast Cetus!"
The warriors at her side moved with unwavering obedience, closing in on Luke and cornering him. Faced with imminent danger, Luke's mind raced to find a way out of this dire predicament.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch," he winced as he wriggled in Queen Hippolyta's grip before a realization struck him. Transforming his hand into a makeshift hammer, he swiftly incapacitated one of the Amazons, sending her plunging into the sea with a resounding splash.
Free from the queen's grasp, Luke positioned himself between Diana and the encroaching warriors, ready to defend himself. A tense standoff ensued, both sides poised for conflict, until Diana's commanding voice cut through the tension.
"Amazons, your princess prders you to stop!" Diana's words carried a regal authority, surprising Luke with her assertiveness. Her stance alongside him was a testament to her newfound strength and determination.
The battalion of warriors, loyal to their princess, eased their aggressive postures and lowered their weapons. Queen Hippolyta's anger simmered, her displeasure evident as she glared at her daughter's display of defiance.
"And I command you to persist!" The queen's authoritative decree swiftly overruled Diana's directive, prompting the warriors to revert to their battle-ready formation.
"Diana, this is preposterous," Queen Hippolyta retorted with a mixture of exasperation and concern. "You are a mere 317 years old. Your youth and naivety undermine your ability to make informed decisions."
"No, Mother! Can't you see? I have proven myself as a woman," Diana asserted passionately. "I have triumphed over the trials set by Athena and Aphrodite. Age does not invalidate my capacity to choose my own path. Luke himself believes in my potential to forge ahead. I no longer require constant sheltering under your guidance!"
"Diana, this is spiraling into absurdity. This man is nothing but a negative influence on you. Look at the recklessness he has led you to."
As tension hung thick in the air, Luke couldn't help but think, 'This situation is escalating quickly. Hopefully, they can find a peaceful resolution soon. At least things couldn't possibly get any worse.'
However, fate had other plans. Queen Hippolyta's gaze turned squarely toward Luke, her voice laced with an iron resolve. "And you, the one known as Luke. I may have taken pity on you when my daughter left you aloft in uncertainty, but I will not tolerate your interference in her growth any longer. Amazons, apprehend that man!"
'Well done, Luke,' he thought wryly. 'You just had to jinx it.'
"I shall not allow you to act as you please, Mother. I am an independent individual, and I can decide my path for myself. It is enshrined within Amazon law!"
Diana's bold proclamation resonated with the other Amazons, who bowed in agreement. While Queen Hippolyta's fury escalated, her ire was directed at what she perceived as the source of her daughter's rebellious behavior. Amidst her anger, a cunning idea materialized – a plan through which she could eliminate the nuisance affecting her child and compel Diana to adhere to her desires. It was a chance to address two matters at once.
"So be it. Lucas from the realm of man, I challenge you to a contest of physical prowess. Should you triumph over me, I shall grant consent for your return to your world accompanied by my daughter. Should you fail, you will depart and cease to disturb our realm."
The Queen's words held a taunting edge, aware that he should not squander the opportunity. Yet, Lucas was left with limited options. This path, though risky, offered a chance to reunite with Diana and return home. He might harbor reservations about his choice, but he recognized the significance of putting forth his utmost effort to reestablish their partnership.
"Mother, this trial lacks fairness! Spare Luke from this ordeal. If anything, I should be the one to—"
"I accept," he interjected, meeting her gaze with a mix of determination and an underlying touch of concern.
"No, Lucas. My mother stands as the mightiest and most valiant Amazon in Themyscira. While I possess confidence in your capabilities, prevailing against her in combat remains uncertain," Diana expressed, her concern tinged with admiration for his courage. Nevertheless, the task of vanquishing the Queen of the Amazons posed a daunting challenge.
"Fear not, Diana. If this is the path required to reunite you with the girls and rectify our course, I shall undertake it. What form will this challenge take, your majesty?"
"I commend your valor in embarking on this endeavor. Yet, you would be unwise to underestimate me, young man." With a snap of her fingers, the other women arranged a crate and stools, positioning them between the contenders.
Seated across from each other, the two challengers readied themselves as the Queen rested her arm atop the wooden surface.
"Arm wrestling? That's the challenge?" Lucas queried.
"I speculated that a contest of blades and steel would be somewhat unfair given your inexperience. Thus, this alternative will suffice, unless, of course, you lack the resolve?" She taunted, drawing snickers from the robust women, amused by the audacity of the man daring to challenge their sovereign.
"By no means, your grace." Luke offered a grin as their hands clasped.
"Ready..." The announcement came from a sturdy-looking Amazon serving as the referee.
"Set..." The point of no return had been reached. It was a choice between departing alone or departing with Diana – a risk he was unwilling to shun. His breath grew heavier, bracing for the impending test of strength.
"Go!" The signal from the Amazon referee signaled the commencement of their battle. The Queen wasted no time, launching an immediate assault on Luke. Swift and powerful, her hand inched perilously close to victory, yet he managed to thwart her advance.
The confrontation evolved into a clash of determination and muscle, each participant straining against the other. Luke clung tenaciously, leveraging his malleable physique to level the playing field. Progress was evident, and an equilibrium emerged. For minutes on end, neither contender yielded an inch.
"I concede that you may possess more than meets the eye, Lucas. Nevertheless, surrender now, for I shall permit no further offense against my kin. You are but a stepping stone, a lesson for her in obedience. And I shall revel in your defeat."
Her words resonated, and Luke's grip began to falter. He grappled with the looming prospect of failure, much akin to how he perceived his shortcomings with the girls. Determination surged within him – he refused to be outmatched by this formidable opponent. But how could he overcome this seemingly insurmountable challenge?
Observing Luke's struggle, Diana felt powerless to intervene when her mother's resolve was unwavering. She stood by, watching as Luke's hand inched ever closer to defeat.
"Luke, no! You have the strength!" Her words pierced the tense atmosphere, leaving onlookers astounded.
"Undoubtedly, your potential surpasses your doubts. I am confident you can overcome this obstacle. Let us return with our comrades after you conquer my mother. You will triumph because you are a hero!" Her conviction struck a chord within him. She was right – victory was attainable. But why?
"Because I am a HERO!" With a surge of determination, he harnessed his strength, expanding his form as his attire gave way to his well-defined musculature. His hand surged, overpowering Hippolyta's and generating a shockwave that splintered parts of the vessel. Beneath them, the ocean surged and roared in response.
Everyone was stunned at the impressive display of power the sole man performed. Luke was more focused on his win, which means they were home free and can be a team again.
"How was that, your majesty?" His words were laced with a hint of arrogance and relief.
The ones on the side watched as their queen remained quiet. She bore no expression of ill will, simply blank and barren of any form of aggression towards her loss.
"You have bested me, Lucas. You are free to go." Her words were plain, as she stood and went towards the bow of the ship.
With a sense of anticipation lingering in the air, Luke found himself slightly taken aback by the queen's unexpectedly swift surrender. His astonishment was mirrored by a sense of contentment, appreciating the outcome of the encounter. However, Diana's thoughts were far more intricate and layered. Aware of the hidden depths of Luke's power, her firsthand experience of his abilities left an indelible impression. A subtle warmth crept across her cheeks, betraying her attempt to conceal the mental image of Luke's chiseled chest and well-defined torso that had now firmly lodged itself in her mind. Her heart danced erratically as a peculiar emotion surged through her veins, compelling her to acknowledge it. It was only when Luke's voice broke through her reverie that she snapped back to reality.
"Diana, you alright? You seemed lost for a moment there."
"Huh? Oh, yes, Lucas. I've never been better." Her eyes shifted away as she struggled to veil her flushed countenance.
To alleviate Diana's emotional turmoil, Luke gallantly donned a spare shirt, veiling his bare torso. True to her word, the queen allowed the somewhat awkward pair to return to Metropolis.
"Diana, a moment, if you please, before you depart."
"Of course, Mother." The princess drew nearer, anticipation shimmering in her eyes as she awaited Hippolyta's words.
"Diana, do remember that I only want what's best for you. The reason that I was adamant about letting you go was because I thought you wouldn't need me to take care of you anymore. I see now that I was wrong, you are strong enough to make your own decision from henceforth."
"Mother, I will never stop being your daughter." The mother and daughter shared a loving embrace.
"And also, that man is a special one indeed. He has the grit and strength of a true warrior, his bravery knows no bounds, I hereby grant you my blessing, Diana."
"Mother!" Her blush returned, hotter than ever as she was embarrassed at her mother's insistence. While Luke remained none the wiser.
As the time came for their departure, the question of their return to land arose. Puzzled by the prospect, Diana wondered aloud, "Luke, how do we plan to return? Did you happen to bring any mode of transport?"
Luke's response carried an air of playfulness. "Yes, me." His arms encircled Diana in a gentle embrace, triggering an unexpected surge of warmth within her as a pair of wings sprouted from his back.
Queen Hippolyta observed the spectacle with a knowing smile, her intuition confirming the blossoming emotions between her daughter and Luke. In uniting their strengths through marriage and offspring, her people would gain a potent warrior lineage.
"Lucas, I entrust my daughter's safety to you. Do not falter," she stated sternly, though her gaze conveyed a mother's protective concern.
"Rest assured, your majesty. I'll keep a close eye on her," Luke affirmed, his words resonating with confidence. With that, he took flight, cradling Diana in his arms. The princess was still entranced by the embrace, emotions swirling within her.
"Is this a wise decision, my queen? Allowing a man to whisk the princess away on a seemingly whimsical adventure?" One of the queen's loyal guards voiced skepticism, mirroring the uncertainty of her companions.
"Fear not. Diana possesses an unyielding spirit. As for the young man..." She pondered, carefully selecting her response. "We shall see in time."
Another long one coming after this.
