Chapter 9

Hello everyone...I dind't want to keep you waiting too long. As we have been building up to Enzuk's decision for a long time. Enjoy.

As I sat in the darkness, clutching the book tightly against my chest, the room fell into an eerie silence. Being locked in my room during an ambush was the last thing I needed. But I wasn't going to sit and do nothing. Determined to find a way out, I cautiously tiptoed across the cold floor, my fingers fumbling in one of the medicine cabinets in search of a flashlight. I knew there was always one in the emergency cabinet, and after a moment of searching, I found it. With a flick of the switch, the room was illuminated, revealing the tense atmosphere that surrounded me.

A chill ran down my back, prompting me to quickly slip on my lab coat and tuck the book safely into my pocket. With a sense of urgency, I approached the door and attempted to jiggle the handle, only to find it still locked. Frustration welled up within me as I called out, "Hello?" Hoping that the guards were still nearby, I raised my voice a little louder, but there was no response. Jiggling the handle once again, I grew more desperate and resorted to pounding on the door with my fist, hoping to catch someone's attention.

Suddenly, the sound of gunshots and growls filled the air outside my door, instantly grabbing my attention. Fear gripped me as I swiftly turned off the flashlight, retreating away from the door. Frantic screams and chaotic gunfire echoed through the hallway, intensifying the sense of danger that surrounded me. I slowly lowered myself to the cold ground and peered through the narrow crack beneath my door. I watched as the flickering lights from the gunfire danced in the darkness, adding to the ominous atmosphere. Dark shadows flickered on the ground and I backed away from the door.

Clutching the flashlight tightly against my chest, I bit down on my bottom lip, sinking into a seated position against the chilling walls of my dorm room. A sudden cessation of the deafening gunfire caused a short gasp to escape my parted lips. In the eerie silence that ensued, I barely dared to draw a breath.

The silence weighed heavily on me, causing my body to break out in a cold sweat. Reacting instinctively, I pressed my back firmly against the wall as I heard slow, monstrous thumps approaching outside my door. Holding my breath, I watched as the dim light from the hallway flickered beneath the door, casting eerie shadows of the immense creature passing by. With a tight grip on my flashlight, I shut my eyes tightly as the thumps paused just beyond my door.

Questions raced through my mind. Could it be Enzuk? Had he managed to escape? Was he responsible for this ambush, or was it an entirely different kind of danger? My eyes flew open as a low growl erupted from the creature, its heavy footsteps echoing back and forth outside my door. I shook my head, my body frozen in fear, silently praying that the monster would not break through the door. If it did, I knew I would be utterly defenseless, with nothing to shield myself from its wrath.

As the monstrous being cautiously sniffed at the door, I tightly gripped the flashlight in my trembling hand, paralyzed with fear and unable to make even the slightest movement or sound. My eyes widened in sheer astonishment as the doorknob began to rattle back and forth, the creature testing its strength against the locked barrier. In that moment, I felt an unexpected surge of gratitude for the security of the locked door. A low, menacing growl reverberated through the eerie silence, intensifying my urgency to escape to the safety of my restroom, where I could barricade myself behind another door. Although I knew that a mere door would provide little resistance against a creature as formidable as Enzuk, it might buy me a precious few seconds to find something, anything, that could potentially serve as a means of protection. However, once again, I found myself at a loss as to what object could possibly deter a creature of Enzuk's immense size and power. The men stationed outside my door were armed with guns, yet even those weapons had proven to be utterly futile against this otherworldly menace.

Recalling that these creatures had an aversion to bright lights, a flicker of hope ignited within me. What if I were to turn the flashlight to its highest setting, momentarily blinding the creature and allowing me to make a swift escape through the door? Just as this idea took hold, the building was violently shaken by an explosive force, its deep, thunderous boom vibrating through the walls. In response, the creature emitted a piercing screech before its heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway, moving away from my room. A sense of relief washed over me, and I released a long-held breath, grateful to still be alive as I sat in the enveloping darkness, contemplating my next move.

I desperately needed to escape the confines of my room, feeling like a helpless target just waiting to be attacked. If only I had a sharp object, I could attempt to pick the lock and free myself. As I mustered the strength to stand, my legs trembled beneath me. The thought of venturing into the dimly lit hallways of the building didn't exactly thrill me, but it seemed far preferable to remaining in the pitch-black room, vulnerable to whatever danger lurked outside. I rationalized that taking my chances navigating the corridors was a better option than simply waiting for a gruesome fate to find me. After all, who knew when that terrifying creature would return to investigate my dormitory? It had undoubtedly caught wind of my presence, perhaps through its heightened sense of smell. I couldn't help but believe that the only reason I still drew breath was because it recognized that I posed little threat compared to the monstrous force that had caused the explosion.

Although the creature seemed to have ranked me lower on its list of priorities, I had a strong feeling that I was still a target. With a sense of urgency, I turned on the flashlight, adjusting it to a low setting, and carefully surveyed the room, contemplating my options. It was then that my eyes fell upon my purse, triggering a memory of a clever credit card trick my mother had once taught me during my younger years. While it wasn't the conventional method of picking a lock, I wondered if it could potentially save me in this situation.

Determined, I swiftly rummaged through my purse, locating my wallet and extracting a credit card. As I held the card in my hand, I could almost hear my mother's voice echoing in my mind, guiding me through the steps. "Slide it into the narrow space between the door and the doorjamb, starting just above the handle, then smoothly move the card downwards and inward."

With a mixture of hope and anxiety, I cautiously inserted the card, hoping it would make contact with the latch assembly and grant me access to the other side of the door. Whispering encouraging words to myself, I gently jiggled the handle, desperately awaiting the sound of the latch clicking open. When it finally happened, my heart skipped a beat, and a triumphant smile spread across my face. "Bingo. Thank you, Mom."

However, my moment of relief was short-lived as the sound of claws scraping against something metallic pierced the air. It was coming from behind me. Reacting quickly, I swiftly increased the brightness of my flashlight to its highest setting, illuminating my room.

As the light flickered across the upper vent in my room a sudden impact against it made me jump, and the high-pitched squeal that followed compelled me to hastily switch off the light. A horrifying, soft clicking growl echoed through the room as something scratched against the vent. Holding my breath, I cautiously made my way through the opened door into the dimly lit hallway. With my eyes tightly shut, I sealed the door behind me, hoping to prevent whatever was lurking in the vent from escaping the room.

Questions raced through my mind. Where had everyone gone? Was Mike safe? Was Daren still alive? What about Lieutenant Black? The blaring emergency alarms above me only intensified my sense of unease as I walked down the desolate hallway. Suddenly, a loud roar followed by the sound of gunshots echoed from around the corner, causing me to whimper and freeze in fear. The piercing screams and chaotic sounds of bodies thrashing sent a shiver through my body.

Taking a moment to catch my breath and regain my composure, I snapped back to reality. Without hesitation, I swiftly turned around and sprinted in the opposite direction, knowing that heading towards the stairs was my best chance of survival. The stairs would lead me to the lower hold, where I knew there were fortified safety bunkers and weapons to defend myself.

However, amidst the urgency, I couldn't ignore the fact that I needed my serum. It would serve as some sort of protection. Determined, I pushed through the weighty door and hurried up the cold cement steps, too terrified to glance behind me. Thankfully, the stairwells were well illuminated by emergency lighting, providing me with a clear path forward.

In a state of panic, I swiftly covered my mouth with my hand to suppress a scream of terror. My stumble over the lifeless body of a guard, whom I immediately recognized as the one who had denied me access to see the creature the first time, intensified my fear. There he lay, motionless on the staircase, his brown eyes wide open and his body covered with blood while still clutching a gun. I pressed my lips together, desperately trying to hold back a nervous cry, while my heavy breaths filled the air. Bending over, I attempted to pick up the blood-soaked gun, but it continuously slipped from my grasp, leaving dark red streaks on my lab coat. Frustrated, I abandoned the idea and instead settled for his army knife. It astonished me how profoundly a lifeless body could unsettle me. The experience of witnessing death firsthand differed greatly from merely reading about it.

Whispering an apology, I carefully stepped over the deceased guard, fully aware that I needed to reach Level 4, where my work awaited and the serum I had developed was stored. Although uncertain of its effectiveness, I hoped that the serum might provide some form of protection. Pausing at the door, marked with a prominent number four at the top, I strained my ears, listening intently for any signs of danger. Gunshots, growls, any indication that proceeding further would be unsafe. However, silence greeted me, encouraging me to slowly open the weighty door, which emitted a loud, groaning creak.

As the door swung open, a flood of light revealed the gruesome sight of three Graks devouring the bodies of two fallen guards. Startled by my intrusion, the Graks squealed and bared their teeth at me, their menacing visages glinting in the light. "Shit!" I exclaimed, hastily shutting the door before a Grak could lunge at me.

The Graks, with their sharp claws and snuffling sounds, relentlessly scratched against the door. Faced with their persistent threat, I abandoned my original plan of obtaining the serum and instead decided to venture towards the lower holds. However, my movements came to a sudden halt when I heard a bone-chilling growl rumble from above me. The creature's deep, menacing sound froze me in place. As it descended the stairs, its claws audibly tapping on each step, I realized it must have entered from Level 6.

Holding my breath, I tightly gripped the knife in my hand and cautiously descended the stairs, stealing glances behind me every now and then. My goal was to reach Level 0, where a holding cell might provide safety. Passing Level 2, the creature emitted a low, screeching noise as it continued its descent. Determined not to be deterred, I hurriedly descended the stairs, my feet padding as quickly as possible, sweat streaming down my forehead.

Finally, I reached Level 1. Overwhelmed with relief, I gasped and pressed myself against the cold stone wall. However, my respite was short-lived as the creature propelled itself down the middle of the open stairwell, landing on the railing right beside me. Its menacing eyes pierced through me, a sneer forming on its face as it bared its teeth in a threatening manner.

In a moment of sheer panic, I let out a scream as the creature roared. Acting on instinct, I plunged the knife between its claws, piercing through its thin flesh, before swiftly shining my flashlight into its eyes. If the creature wasn't angry before, it certainly was now.

In retaliation, its tail whipped around and forcefully knocked me down the stairs. I groaned in pain as I landed on my side, the sound of the knife clattering to the ground echoing in my ears. The creature hissed in anger, clearly infuriated by my actions.

It took me a brief moment to recover my breath, as the force of impact had knocked the wind out of me. With determination, I continued to crawl towards the door, prominently labeled as Level 0. As my hand reached out to grasp the handle, a chilling growl echoed behind me. Turning around, I was met with the sight of the creature towering over me, its claws menacingly extended and saliva dripping from its jaws.

In that terrifying moment, I realized that this might be the end for me. The creature seemed poised to pounce, and I was frozen in fear, unable to make a single move. My heart pounded relentlessly in my chest, anticipating the imminent attack. The creature leaped towards me, its mouth frothing with aggression.

However, to my astonishment, before the ferocious beast could reach me and sink its teeth into my flesh, another creature intervened. A thick, spiked tail wrapped around the aggressive creature's torso, forcefully yanking it back. With a resounding thud, the creature was slammed against the floor, while the new arrival emitted a fearsome, beastlike roar.

In that fleeting moment, I caught a glimpse of the new creature's piercing blue eyes. And I knew those eyes. Those eyes were unmistakable. It was Enzuk, I knew it without a doubt. As the enraged creature regained its composure, it retaliated by pushing against Enzuk, propelling him into the wall with great force.

Enzuk emitted a high-pitched howl, fueled by determination, and lunged forward. His razor-sharp claws dug into the chest of the other creature, causing it to wail in agony. With his powerful tail, Enzuk thrashed his opponent against the railing of the nearby stairs, creating a cacophony of noise.

The enraged creature emitted a fierce hiss, radiating anger. Its gaze flickered between me and Enzuk, but Enzuk let out another thunderous roar, preparing for another attack. Enzuk straightened his body and growled. He was clearly engaged in a battle with the creature, yet they did not seem like they were truly seeking to harm each other.

Instead, their clash seemed to resemble two lions vying for dominance over a weakened lamb. It became evident that the other creature had set its sights on me as well. However, at that moment, I found myself uncertain of which outcome I desired. The determined creature shifted its attention away from Enzuk and charged towards me once again. I gasped as I witnessed Enzuk's skillful maneuver, using his tail to encircle the other creature's neck like a noose, forcefully dragging him back to the ground. Enzuk leaned over his adversary, matching its vicious stare, baring his teeth with an overwhelming display of power and primal savagery in his eyes. A commanding growl erupted from Enzuk's throat as he glowered down at the other creature.

The opposing creature hesitated, seemingly submitting, before averting its gaze from Enzuk and responding with a soft hiss while lowering its defenses. It moaned in resignation, bowing its head, though its disdain for the situation was palpable.

As I observed Enzuk's tail beginning to unwind, preparing to release the defeated creature, I swiftly darted towards the door, making my way to the safety bunkers. If I could just find refuge inside, perhaps I could hide until the danger passed. However, confusion engulfed me as I realized the absence of everyone and the bunkers. The spaces they once occupied were now empty. I was left behind. But why?

The answer hit me– they blamed me. They had abandoned me to face my own demise. Lieutenant Black's warning echoed in my mind, reminding me that failure would result in blood on my hands. Perhaps this abandonment was his way of punishing me for my perceived failure.

The creaking of the door from the stairwell sent a shiver through my body, as I watched in horror as something slithered into the room. It moved with the agility of a massive lizard, effortlessly scaling the walls. The dimly lit area was filled with intermittent flashes of red emergency lights, casting eerie shadows that seemed to dance along with the blaring warning alarm sirens.

As I stood frozen in fear, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched, hunted even, from the darkness that enveloped the room. The hairs on my arms stood on end, a primal instinct warning me of imminent danger. A deep-throated growl echoed off the cold stone walls, sending chills down my spine.

Frantically, I scanned my surroundings, desperately searching for any sort of weapon to defend myself. But to my dismay, I found myself empty-handed, devoid of any means to protect myself. Even my own kind had abandoned me, leaving me to fend for myself in this terrifying situation. They had forsaken me, leaving me to face the wrath of the Graks and these creatures alone. In that moment, I realized that no one would come to my rescue, not even Daren. Black probably forced him to leave. That is if Daren was still alive. Maybe Black was dead. The pain in my heart intensified as I surveyed the room, fully aware that I was now the prey in this deadly game of cat and mouse.

Yet, amidst the fear and uncertainty, I couldn't help but yearn for a glimpse of the monster that sought to claim my life. The very creature I had spent days conversing with had transformed into my tormentor, a ruthless predator on the prowl. Its insatiable craving? My very blood, coursing through my veins, fueling its relentless pursuit.

"I-I know you're there," I quivered. "No need to hide yourself." My voice trembled, vulnerable as I anxiously scanned my surroundings. Suddenly, my gaze met a pair of radiant blue eyes that peered at me like two luminescent orbs emerging from the shadows. My breath caught, and my throat felt parched.

"What makes you believe I'm hiding?" He smirked, his expression wolfish, sizing me up. "I have no reason to hide. If anyone is concealing themselves, it's you." A glimmer danced in his eyes as he inched closer to me.

A resounding thud echoed as Enzuk descended from the wall to the floor. His eyes shut momentarily, and with a deep inhale, he sniffed the air before exhaling slowly. I whimpered as his gaze locked onto mine once more, this time brimming with insatiable hunger. He straightened his body to its full height, poised to pounce.

For some inexplicable reason, I found solace in the fact that I could actually finally lay my eyes on him, rather than endlessly pondering his whereabouts. A sigh of relief escaped my lips, although it should have been the complete opposite considering the sight of his immense, scaly figure.

"Have you come to claim me now?" I inquired. He began to encircle me from a distance, never breaking his gaze. "I'd prefer if you just got it over with. No need to prolong the inevitable."

"Quite brave, aren't you?"

"We both knew this day would come," I confessed.

"Indeed."

"Then, just do it."

"You say that, but you're afraid of death. I can smell your fear, human."

"I should have anticipated that you would never change your mind. You're nothing but a heartless monster."

"True," he sneered. "Although, it was rather amusing to witness your futile attempts to alter my nature."

"You're sick. One day, your kind will cease to exist. One day, another species will eradicate you. And I hope they do! We won't be the last race to defy you!"

"Survival of the fittest," he declared, flexing his muscles as he continued to encircle me. He sniffed the air, his nostrils flaring. "Your scent is irresistibly captivating. Did you know that? Do you realize how long I've yearned for nothing to stand between us? No doors. No glass. No walls. You are now mine."

I glared at him. "Then go ahead. If you want to end my life, do it. I'd rather have you do it than those other creatures. At least it'll be quick."

"Who said that?" he snarled. "I never promised you a swift death. I simply mentioned that I could provide one, if I felt merciful. Which I don't."

"But..." My voice caught in my parched throat, unsure of what to say. My eyes widened in fear as the thought of him prolonging my death sank in. Surely, he wouldn't, right?

"You don't deserve a swift death. Your talk of peace, was it all just an act? The serum you created allowed some other humans to escape. How could someone innocent, someone seeking peace, create such a lethal weapon?"

"To protect ourselves from beings like you," I retorted, glaring at him. "Creatures that lack reason and refuse to be civilized. Creatures that can't be trusted!"

His lips tightened into a smile as he spoke. "Did I ever deceive you, human?"

No, he hadn't. I had just expected more from him. After all the time we had spent together, I had believed I was making progress, reaching him somehow. And perhaps that was what hurt the most.

"Did I ever deceive you?" he repeated.

"No. I...I just hoped for more. I thought..."

"That we could be friends?" he mocked, his eyes narrowing. "How ridiculous. You know that's impossible. Drop the pretense. It's just us. No need to pretend."

"Nothing was fake," I whispered.

After scrutinizing me momentarily, he tilted his head to the side. "Do I detect disappointment? Some kind of sorrow?" I couldn't believe it, but his face contorted into an even more unsettling wicked grin. "You actually thought you could be my friend, didn't you? You believed that by being kind, you could get close to me. That you could somehow change me and divert me from my mission."

I did. Tears welled up in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall in his presence. "I shouldn't have expected a monster like you to change. You sick bastard."

"Oh my. You really did," he chuckled. "And now you're sad because it didn't work. On the brink of tears because I didn't become your docile pet. Your foolishness astounds me. How many times did I warn you that this would be your fate? Did you truly think I would let a few kind gestures sway me? All the while I was confined, I had only one desire. One desire."

"I know. To kill me."

"To bathe in your blood, more precisely. To fulfill my mission. I've never failed a mission, and I won't start now."

Earlier, Enzuk had declared that the serum had proven to be effective, and to my surprise, there were actual human survivors. In addition, he made a point of mentioning that the serum had allowed some humans to escape. I couldn't help but feel a surge of satisfaction at this revelation. How foolish I had been to ever sympathize with him, to believe that he could change or possess any redeeming qualities. He was right all along, and I was the one who had been utterly foolish and naive. Black, Daren, Mike - they were all correct in their assessment of him, and I was the complete idiot.

A thought crossed my mind, wondering if they were all still alive. Enzuk growled. My body began to shake. The cold of death approaching. The idea of dying was unbearable to me. I instinctively began to retreat, creating distance between Enzuk and myself, while his tail ominously swayed behind him. "You can't escape me, Isabella. It would be foolish of you to even try."

Maybe he was right. But I refused to accept my fate passively. It was foolish to simply stand in the middle of the room, waiting for a painful death. Despite his intimidating words, I continued to back away from him. It was one thing to observe him from the safety of thick glass, but an entirely different matter to witness him freely roaming without any restraints.

My eyes darted towards a small opening between a demolished bunker and the wall. Enzuk was right; running away seemed like a foolish choice. Surviving in such a hopeless situation appeared to be a lost cause, akin to an ant scurrying beneath the shadow of an impending footstep.

Yet, perhaps it was my human nature that compelled me to fight for survival, even in the face of such overwhelming hopelessness. Maybe it was the human part of me that generated a glimmer of hope, propelling me to run with all my might towards the narrow crevice and squeeze myself into the tight space between the destroyed bunker and the chilling wall.

Enzuk emitted a sinister, hissing laugh. "I allowed you to flee, and that's where you choose to seek refuge? Do you truly believe you're safe there? Shall we put that to the test? Let's engage in a game. This time we will play my game. I assume you enjoy games, don't you? This time, let's assess your intellect. If I emerge victorious, you will meet your demise. If you win, you'll live."

Like the speed of light, he leaped onto the top of the bunker and extended his arm to scratch the surface of the stone wall against which I was leaning. The harsh scraping sound of his claws grazing the stone, mere inches from my head, caused me to whimper. I instinctively crouched low, shielding my head as my heart pounded furiously in my chest.

I felt like a trapped mouse in a dead-end burrow, with the cat's claws being my only means of escape. Or in this case, Enzuk's claws.

"Please," I pleaded in a whisper. "Don't do this."

"Let's raise the stakes, shall we?" He jumped off the bunker and scaled the walls. For a moment, I thought he was departing, but that was before he shattered the lights and launched an assault on the control room responsible for the blaring alarm system.

Within a matter of mere seconds, a suffocating darkness descended upon me, engulfing my surroundings and leaving me disoriented and stranded. The once familiar sounds of the world were replaced by the deafening thumps of my own heart, vibrating through my ears, amplifying my growing sense of dread. Trembling uncontrollably in the oppressive silence, I teetered on the edge of a full-blown panic attack, my hands clenched tightly into fists, my nails digging painfully into my palms. This was a form of torture that surpassed any nightmare I had ever experienced.

What made it even more unbearable was the realization that he was deliberately toying with me, playing a twisted game of cat and mouse. Couldn't he just end it all and spare me from this torment? The fear of death and the unknown loomed over me, casting a shadow darker than the actual act of dying itself.

The eerie absence of sound was enough to drive anyone to the brink of insanity, especially in a life-or-death situation. As I mustered the courage to look up, a startled yelp escaped my lips as I caught sight of a single, piercing blue eye peering down at me through a narrow crack.

I let out a despairing moan, unable to hold back my emotions any longer. A single tear trickled down my face, a testament to the overwhelming sadness that consumed me. "Enzuk," I pleaded, my voice trembling. "P-please." Collapsing to the ground, I instinctively curled up, hugging my knees tightly to my chest, as if seeking solace in the comfort of a child. I made sure to keep my distance from the open sides of the bunker, fully aware of the imminent danger that surrounded me. The realization hit me like a ton of bricks - this was a truly horrific way to meet my end. He was deliberately trying to end my life, and while I shouldn't have been surprised or hurt, a part of me still felt a deep sense of betrayal. Why? He had made it abundantly clear countless times that this was to be my fate, my destiny.

As I lifted my gaze, another gasp escaped my lips. He had vanished into thin air. The silence that enveloped me was deafening. Suddenly, a loud scraping noise pierced through the stillness. The bunker, with agonizing slowness, inched closer to me, as if it intended to crush me against the cold, unforgiving wall. Panic surged through my veins, and I pleaded desperately for it to stop. "No. No. Please, stop," I gasped, my voice barely audible.

But then, a glimmer of realization dawned upon me. The bunker was not closing in on me from all sides. Only one side was pressed against the wall, effectively sealing off one of my potential escape routes. It became painfully clear that there was now only one way out, and he had orchestrated it with intent. The realization hit me like a punch to the gut - he had deliberately left me with no other choice.

Gazing into the darkness, fear gripped me, dreading the sight of two merciless blue orbs piercing through. The hunger for my blood consumed him, his desire to see me dead was genuine. There was no reasoning with him; he was a monstrous being who believed my time had come.
"Come out," his deep voice reverberated from the shadows.

I shook my head, questioning the purpose. Why would I willingly meet my demise sooner?

"I thought you were clever. Even you should realize there's only one way out," he taunted.

There must be an escape, I urged myself. Come on, Bella, think. There must be a vulnerability he possesses.

His wicked chuckle sent shivers down my arms. "Don't make me come in there to fetch you. I'm testing your intelligence, just as you did with me. Remember? I wonder how long it'll take for you to accept that death is the only way out."

I covered my ears with my hands. "Go away." It may have been childish, but the anxiety of my impending demise overwhelmed me.

"I can't," his penetrating blue eyes suddenly materialized from the darkness. His fiery gaze remained fixed on mine as he slowly approached. "I warned you. There's no escaping this."

"You can't do this," I whispered. "There must be another solution." My heart pounded in my ears, and beads of sweat formed on my forehead.

"Hmm. Always seeking an alternative. Don't you ever tire of searching for nonexistent answers?" I glared at his vibrant blue eyes. "I'll simplify it for you," he snarled, "you have two options. Option one: come out and prove you can face death with honor, and I'll make it swift. Option two: try to evade death, and I'll savor every moment. Trust me, you don't want the latter."

Neither choice appealed to me!

"Step forward," he growled even more fiercely. "Kneel before me, and I assure you, you won't feel a thing when I slit your throat."

I shook my head. I couldn't do it. Moreover, my body was paralyzed with fear. Even if I summoned the courage to confront him, I was rooted in place.

"Have it your way. But remember, I gave you a choice," his voice echoed in the darkness. Then, silence enveloped the scene. Straining my ears, I could only hear my own ragged breaths and the thunderous beats of my heart echoing in my ears.

I was consumed by anxiety. Could it be possible to simply lose consciousness and never wake up again? My eyes frantically scanned the darkness, desperately searching for any signs of movement. A whimper escaped my lips as I quickly retreated from the open side, attempting to create distance.

Suddenly, I gasped as a sharp, razor-like object pierced my stomach. Shocked, my mouth opened and closed in disbelief. With great force, I was thrust against the wall, causing the sharp object to dig deeper into my flesh. A quick shriek escaped my lips as my eyes widened and my breath became strained. Tears of pain streamed down my cheeks as I groaned. Agonizingly, my body was lifted and rolled up by his coiled tail, resembling a snake preparing to crush its prey.

Every struggle intensified the pain, as the end of his tail remained lodged inside me like a knife, while his powerful tail pinned my arms to my sides. He positioned me in front of him, his piercing blue eyes glaring down at me. That's when the real pain struck, as if my body had finally processed the initial shock of the stabbing and was now ready to embrace the excruciating torment.

I screamed at the top of my lungs, tossing my head back and forth. He wiggled the tip of his sharp tail inside me, a cruel reminder that I was completely at his mercy. "Please," I moaned, desperately pleading. His response was only a growl, as if the sound of my voice had become nothing more than an annoyance to him. More tears cascaded down my face as I threw my head back and groaned in agony. "E-Enzuk. Please."

Instead of acknowledging my plea, he simply observed me in silence, his eyes filled with indifference. I screamed once more as he moved his tail back and forth within me, my cries rumbling off the stone walls. Each movement of his sharp tail unleashed a fresh wave of pain, renewing the torment and agony. I fought to free my arms, my legs kicking futilely in the air below me. However, it only caused his tail to tighten, while he stared at me with a disturbingly curious fascination. A sickening monster. Did he truly derive pleasure from this? "F-fu-fuck y-you," I strained to voice my defiance.

The metallic taste of blood lingered in my mouth, a small trickle escaping from the corner of my lips. As I struggled to catch my breath, I noticed a twitch at the sides of his mouth. "Is that a request?" he questioned, raising an eyebrow. Despite my attempts to glare, my muscles refused to obey, as if my body was gradually shutting down while my mind raged on, cursing like a madwoman. Deep within me, a blazing fire burned, fueled by anger, betrayal, and an overwhelming sense of sadness.

Perhaps it was my human nature again, but I refused to surrender in my fight for survival. Against all odds, I clung to the sheer will to live. His frown deepened as I continued to resist, knowing that my efforts were futile. In a sickening display, he twisted the end of his tail inside me, causing excruciating waves of pain that forced me to scream out. "It's pointless to fight," his deep voice echoed, as I gasped for a fractured breath. "Listen to your body. It's telling you that it can't go on."

I despised his words. I despised my helplessness. A tingling sensation swept over my body, and a numbing feeling began to take hold. In that moment, all I wanted was to be back home. I yearned to apologize to Daren, to express my regret for not being a more diligent scientist.

I longed to see my father, and I felt immense regret for disappointing him. He had placed his trust in me, and I had completely messed up everything. It was entirely my fault. With a choked voice, I managed to utter, "Papa, I'm sorry... Papa. Please forgive me," as tears streamed down my face. Enzuk tilted his head in confusion, unable to comprehend my incoherent ramblings. "I want to go home."

At the mention of "home," his ears perked up, indicating that he understood the word. "You will soon reunite with your people. You will be back home," he reassured me in a soothing tone. Was it sympathy or pure pity that I detected in his eyes as they scanned my body?

Unexpectedly, after observing me for a moment, his tail brought me closer to his strong, muscular chest. His large hand firmly grasped my hair and pressed my head against his beating heart. Despite my body's struggle to remain conscious, I couldn't help but feel that he was trying to comfort me. To ease my pain. Despite being my tormentor and executor, the warmth emanating from his chest provided a sliver of solace. "Shhh. Rest peacefully, human," he whispered. I could detect his masculine scent, a combination of earthiness and musk that emanated from his body. It was not unpleasant. In a peculiar way, it too offered comfort, warmth, and an invitation.

"I... I don't want to die," I managed to hiccup. "Please, don't let me die." My body began convulsing as my breathing grew shallow and slow. "Ple... don't... let... me..."

"Hush. Stay quiet. Don't resist. You cannot prevent this."

"No. E-Enz-don't. Scared-"

"I understand," his deep voice resonated in my ear. A single tear rolled down my cheek and landed on his chest. He gently ran his claws through my hair. "You're a courageous human. I'll give you that. But your time has arrived. Just let go," he whispered, tracing his nose along the back of my neck. His lips brushed against my earlobe, inhaling my scent.

I coughed and groaned as another surge of pain coursed through me. I didn't want to die. Not like this. Not in this manner. Was this his version of a merciful death? Because although my body resisted dying, it also felt like he was prolonging my demise somehow. Or maybe it was just my imagination. I had never been good at predicting his actions in the past.

He nestled his lips into the curve of my neck, once again taking a deep breath, his teeth grazing my delicate skin. I shook my head. "No," I croaked.

"Isabella, cease your resistance." But I wasn't putting up much of a fight anymore. Sure, my mind refused to accept death, but my body was completely under his control. He could end my life. Why didn't he just end it swiftly by slitting my throat? Why did he make me suffer in pain? If he removed his tail, I would instantly bleed out and die. Yet, he kept it inside me, subjecting me to wave after wave of agony. I sensed that he, in some twisted way, was still keeping me alive.

But why? For his own amusement?

As I struggled to catch my breath, his large hand gently cradled the back of my head and swiftly pulled it away from his chest. His searching gaze wandered across my face, as if he were desperately seeking something. I gasped for air once again, the sensation of suffocation overwhelming me.

In an effort to help me breathe, he forced my head to tilt back, exposing my vulnerable neck and fixing my gaze upon the ceiling. Though air filled my lungs, I could feel my body weakening, like a flame deprived of oxygen. It was only a matter of time before I succumbed to the inevitable. The loss of blood was evident, and I could still feel it slowly seeping from my wounds. My moments were numbered.

Discomfort coursed through me as my head hung awkwardly in midair. Yet, his large palm gently scooped up and cradled the back of my head, while his tail continued to hold me captive. With his warm hand providing support, I blinked slowly, struggling to bring his deep blue eyes into focus.

With his other hand, he cupped my cheek, his thumb brushing roughly over my dried bottom lip. The question echoed in my mind: why was I still alive? I didn't desire death, but anything seemed preferable to lingering in agonizing pain. My body trembled and convulsed once more, and a whimper escaped my lips.

"Shhh, Isabella," his deep voice whispered, the sound of my name reverberating in the air. His intense gaze studied me, flickering across my face. In that moment, I could have sworn his eyes softened, as his clawed thumb gently traced circles on my cold cheek.

I felt a surge of panic rising within me, causing my breath to quicken and my heart to race. I desperately shook my head, trying to deny the reality that was unfolding before me. I couldn't bear the thought of perishing in the darkness, unable to even see Enzuk's face. It was not the way I wanted to meet my end.

Enzuk, puzzled by my sudden distress, furrowed his brow. His eyes, a mesmerizing shade of blue, seemed to hold a mix of emotions. Was it pity that I saw in them? It appeared as though he, too, was grappling with his own internal battles. Perhaps, just maybe, he would be willing to grant me one final request.

Summoning all the strength I had left, I forced my eyes open wide and managed to choke out my plea, "Take me outside... anywhere but here." I yearned to be in the open, away from the confines of this cold and clinical facility where I had spent countless hours, never to leave alive. If death was inevitable, I wanted it to occur in a place that held some semblance of warmth and life.

"What difference does it make?" Enzuk spat out, his frustration evident. "Whether you die here or there, it won't change anything." I shook my head in defiance, desperately hoping he would understand.

"Please," I managed to cough out, my voice strained.

His jaw clenched, and he narrowed his eyes at me. "You are exasperating," he muttered. "Even now, you believe you can make requests of me, as if we share some kind of bond." Disappointment washed over me, and I closed my eyes, feeling defeated.

A heavy sigh escaped Enzuk's lips, and I cautiously opened my eyes. He lifted his head, scanning the room, perhaps contemplating my plea. Or maybe, he simply couldn't bear to look at my pitiful state any longer. When his icy gaze returned to me, there was a glimmer of understanding in his eyes. It was as if he acknowledged my pain and desperation. The intensity of his gaze sent shivers down my spine and made my heart ache, as I recalled the comfort I used to find in those captivating blue eyes during our conversations. It was a comfort I couldn't quite explain, but one that I cherished deeply. Through my half-closed eyes, I allowed myself to reminisce about the moments we had shared, and a pang of longing gripped my sluggish heartbeat.

Suddenly, he gently cupped my head in his hand and pressed my face against his chest. "Hold on," he whispered softly. As he cradled me in his arms, we soared into the air, leaving the cold, dark facility behind.

I could hear the scraping sound of Enzuk's claws along the wall, a swift and purposeful movement. And then, I felt it. The cool, refreshing air from the outside world embraced my entire being, as if it was welcoming me back to life. Enzuk positioned me in a way that my back pressed against his firm chest. With utmost tenderness, he cradled my chin in his comforting grasp, tilting my face upwards. In a hushed and soothing voice, he whispered into my ear "Look."

As I opened my eyes, I was greeted by a mesmerizing black sky adorned with countless sparkling stars. They shone so brilliantly, their beauty taking my breath away. I wanted to express my awe and gratitude, but my weakened state prevented me from forming the words.

Yet, Enzuk seemed to understand without me saying a word. "It is beautiful, is it not?" He said, his voice, low and rough, mingled with his warm breath cascading down my neck. I began coughing up more blood, desperately gasping for air. The fear of impending death overwhelmed me.

Enzuk's swiftly turned me to face him again. His gaze bore into mine, until suddenly, his eyes widened as if something had taken hold of him. His lips parted in shock, and his fingers delicately touched my pale face. He traced a finger from my face, down my neck, between my breasts, and then rested his hand on my stomach. I could feel the pulsing of his tail, a sign of his own turmoil, as he stood there frozen, watching me fade away. His bright blue eyes remained fixed on me, and he gently wiped away a stray tear that rolled down my face.

His narrowed eyes hinted at a possible attack, as if he might finish me off by sinking his teeth into my exposed throat. But it didn't matter anymore. Despite my fear, I had come to accept that these final moments in Enzuk's arms marked the end of my story. "Isabella," Enzuk uttered, his intense dark gaze never wavering from mine.

With my last gasp of air, all I could manage to mumble was, "Enzuk," before surrendering myself to death. Darkness engulfed me, and my body went limp.
